FLYING FREEDOM THURSDAY NEWS FOR JULY 18, 2013

Hey,

This news is amazing. I have a batch of comments to add, but I’m going to step aside and let it flow. We will talk about Bikernet content, redheads, riding, and whiskey at the end.

The Thursday Bikernet News is sponsored in part by IronWorks Magazine and Cycle Source.

EMISSIONS TESTING NO LONGER REQUIRED FOR ARIZONA MOTORCYCLES–The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has dropped its requirement that Phoenix-area motorcycles undergo annual emissions inspections, the last place in the country to require such testing. The federal agency has approved a request from state environmental officials in Arizona that motorcycle tests be discontinued, effective immediately.

The request to drop the testing requirement came in response to a 2008 state law requiring the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to do an analysis of pollutants emitted by motorcycles and make a proposal to the federal agency. “Our analysis has determined that the cost and inconvenience is not providing a significant environmental benefit,” said Trevor Baggiore, deputy director of air quality at ADEQ.

Even though motorcycles account for 3.5% of vehicles on the area’s roads, the department’s analysis determined that they emit “insignificant” amounts of pollution, accounting for less than 1% of total emissions in the Phoenix metro area.

Pima County (Tucson) and Maricopa County (Phoenix) were the only areas in the United States that required motorcycles to pass yearly emissions inspections at a cost of $19 per test, and Pima County halted motorcycle testing in 2007.

Congratulations to ABATE of Arizona, the MMA of Arizona and the Arizona Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs (ACMC) for their years of stalwart efforts to relieve Grand Canyon State riders of these unnecessary costs and burdensome time wasted in long lines.

This is just one item from Bill Bish’s Coast to Coast legislative news sponsored by the law offices of Richard M. Lester. I will publish the full monthly report in the next couple of days.

KUSTOM FAB SPECIAL TOOL MAKING IN HAWAII– I thought you might appreciate this. I have had my share of fabricating exhaust pipes from a stack of bends. But recently I streamlined the exhaust making process by coming across some new tools.

First, I purchased a hand-held band saw from Hardware Freight and converted into a table saw. Next, I came across an exhaust system fabrication aid by Ice Engine Works that simplifies the process and helps create some pretty sick exhaust systems.

NEW TECH HEADED TO BIKERNET TRIKES–Awhile back you said you wanted some Tech Articles on trikes, so here is another one.
It appears many riders are concerned about temperatures of their engines and the industry has continued to improve oil coolers and JIMS Forceflow.

Your readers should appreciate a good cross reference of products, so they can decide which is the best for them.

I’ve owned the black/chrome 250 Spyder for a couple years, now. I love this bike and was wondering if it is capable of being even more customized: a two-seater put on and a sissy bar?

LATEST 1%ER BOOK FROM MOTORBOOKS–In the early 1960s, a young Navy vet, motorcyclist, amateur photographer, and rebel named Phil Cross joined a motorcycle club called the Hells Angels. It turned out to be a bogus chapter of the club that would soon find infamy, so he switched to another club called the Night Riders.

Like the bogus chapter of the Hells Angels, this turned out to be a club whose brotherhood was run by a man Mr. Cross describes as “a complete asshole.” One day, Mr. Cross stuffed the leader in a ringer-type washing machine and joined a club called the Gypsy Jokers.

He started a San Jose chapter of the Jokers and embarked on the most action-packed years of his life. The Jokers were in the midst of a shooting war with the real Hells Angels. The fighting became so intense that the Jokers posted snipers atop their clubhouse.

This was a rough time, but it was also the height of the free-love hippie era, and as a young man, Phil enjoyed himself to the fullest. He never let anything as minor as a little jail time stop his fun.

Once, while serving time for fighting and fleeing an officer, Phil broke out of jail, entered his bike in a bike show, won the bike show, and broke back into jail before anyone discovered he was missing.

Though Phil was tough—he was a certififed martial arts instructor—the Angels proved a tough foe. After multiple beating- induced emergency room visits, Mr. Cross decided that if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, so he and most of his club brothers patched over to become the San Jose chapter of the Hells Angels.

This book chronicles the life and wild times of Mr. Cross in words and photos.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Phil Cross is a former bodyguard, martial-arts instructor, and amatuer photographer. A former member of the Gypsy Jokers Motorcycle Club, he has been a member of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club since 1969 and is still active in the club. This is his first book.

A TALKING POINT WITH LEGISLATORS….
ABATE: Helmet law has positive economic benefit in Michigan.

By the Midland Daily News Sunday

Changes in the Michigan mandatory helmet law have had a positive effect on motorcycle riding in Michigan, according to ABATE of Michigan.
There has been an increase in motorcycle travel in Michigan since April of 2012, ABATE — American Bikers Aiming Toward Education — said.

“Motorcycle tourism is up. Motorcyclists across the country are coming to Michigan in droves. Very few out-of-state motorcyclists were seen in Michigan before the adult helmet requirement was modified. Cyclists from across the country are discovering the beauty of the lower and upper peninsulas of Michigan. There is an increase of out-of-state participation in Michigan motorcycle events by as much as five times during the summer of 2012,” ABATE said in a press release.

“Our members have reported an increase in motorcycle tourism since the enactment of the rider choice law,” added Scott Ellis, executive director of the Michigan Licensed Beverage Association, which represents more than 1,800 restaurant, bar, party store, hotel and casino establishments across the state. “From Monroe to Muskegon to the Keweenaw Peninsula, more out-of-state motorcyclists are stopping, staying and spending money at our restaurants, hotels and attractions.”

Motorcycle sales also are up in Michigan. And 2012 was the safest riding season in 10 years for licensed motorcyclists.

ABATE of Michigan supports public and private rider education. A current list of motorcycle rider education classes can be found at the Michigan Secretary of State website. ABATE of Michigan has partnered with public schools and private driving instructors to teach more than 80,000 new drivers about motorcycle awareness, using resources donated by ABATE members.

PETERSEN AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM TAKES A MAJOR DETOUR–The L.A.-centric Petersen Automotive Museum is selling a third of its 400 classic cars and will put more emphasis on motorcycles and French vehicles.

By Jerry Hirsch, Los Angeles Times

One by one, in auctions across the country, some of the world’s most collectible cars are quietly passing from the Petersen Automotive Museum’s vault into private hands.

The sales started in March, and they include the automotive equivalents of a Pablo Picasso or a Salvador Dali. A 1995 Ferrari F50 went for $1.375 million. A 2006 Bugatti Veyron — the first sold in the U.S. — fetched $924,000. A 1990 Ferrari F40 garnered $715,000.

Before the auctions end, the museum plans to liquidate nearly a third of its cache of about 400 classic cars. The sales — conducted under the radar until the museum confirmed them to The Times on Monday — will raise money to finance a major face-lift and reconfiguration of the institution, which occupies a former Ohrbach’s department store at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue.

The new plans include a greater emphasis on motorcycles and French art deco vehicles, passions that match the tastes of the museum’s new leadership. The strategy was launched this year by Executive Director Terry Karges — who owns a motorcycle company, Champions Moto — and new board Chairman Peter Mullin, who also heads an auto museum in Oxnard that boasts one of the world’s foremost private collections of French cars.

“The idea was to breathe some life into the museum,” Karges said. “We want to be a world-class automotive museum. We want to become an art museum featuring rolling sculpture and tell stories about the art of speed and the art of design.”

The auctions were kept low-profile because of worries about how the news might affect future automobile donations, Karges said.

The sell-off has drawn criticism from former Petersen employees. The overhaul, they say, threatens to move the institution from the focus put forth in its mission statement: “to present the history of the automobile and its impact on American life and culture using Los Angeles as the prime example.”

Founded in 1994 by Robert E. Petersen, head of a publishing empire that included Motor Trend magazine, the museum has until now focused on vehicles built or designed in Southern California.
“They have sold a lot of wonderful cars that Bob Petersen was very fond of,” said Buddy Pepp, who retired as the museum’s executive director last year.

The California-focused collection helped establish the Petersen as one of the premier automotive museums in the nation, said Matt Anderson, curator of transportation at Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich.

“They have a signature collection,” Anderson said, “some rare, one-of-a-kind vehicles, some Hollywood movie cars and then a good cross representation that fits Southern California’s car culture, which may be even more significant than that of Detroit.”

So far, the Petersen has sold 12 cars for a combined $8.5 million at Gooding & Co.’s Amelia Island Auction in March. An additional 107 cars will be offered at an Auctions America event in Burbank starting Aug. 1. They include a 1999 Shelby Series 1 that bears serial number 00075, in honor of designer Carroll Shelby’s 75th birthday, and a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle — “Herbie” — that starred in Disney’s 1968 movie “The Love Bug.”

Karges estimates that the August auction could reap as much as $5 million for the museum.
Karges, who became executive director last year, called the sales a culling of vehicles that were either surplus or that could easily be borrowed from collectors if needed for an exhibit. He said the sales will provide millions of dollars to fund improvements to the museum, including new exhibits and interactive displays, in time for its 20th anniversary next year.

He said the museum will bring in some of the cars from Mullin’s French collection and will add more about motorcycles, technology and motor sports.
Including Mullin, three of the six members of the Petersen’s board are also on the board of the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard. Mullin personally owns almost all the rare pre-World War II French cars displayed at his museum.

Selling the vehicles won’t hurt the Petersen because many were not exhibit-quality cars. Others would cost “an enormous” amount to restore and were taking up valuable space, Karges said.

“There are so many cars, there is no room to move downstairs,” Karges said, referring to the Petersen’s vault, or storage area.

With freed-up space, the museum may still add cars to its collection. Karges also plans to expand its already extensive collection of alternative-fuel vehicles.

Once restricted to high-ranking museum personnel and visiting VIPs, the vault was opened to public tours last year and has become a popular and profitable exhibit. For $25 on top of the Petersen’s $15 admission, visitors can take a guided tour to learn the stories behind about 130 cars, most of which are linked to Hollywood stars and other notables.

Pepp, the former director, questioned whether the Petersen could continue to borrow the kind of rare and prized cars it’s selling now. Those cars could well disappear into overseas collections, he said.
No one from the Petersen family is around to weigh in. Petersen and his wife, Margie, had two sons, Bob and Ritchie, who were 10 and 9 when they died in a 1975 airplane crash. So there are no heirs who might request that the museum adhere to its original mission, said Brian Schippert, a former museum intern who later managed private car collections for wealthy individuals.

Schippert became alarmed after seeing about 50 cars he remembered from his time at the Petersen listed for the Auction America sale in Burbank.
“I am concerned they are liquidating so many assets that made up the foundation of the museum,” Schippert said.

Greg Wallace, manager of the General Motors Heritage Center, the automaker’s historic collection in Sterling Heights, Mich., said he was surprised that the Petersen would sell so much of its collection.

Institutions have to cull their fleets from time to time, Wallace said, and what the Petersen faces is “a classic problem for museums. It is tough to keep them relevant, modern and afloat.”

UNCLE MONKEY ON SNOW WHITE REPAIRS–With great power comes great responsibility. The second part of that saying everyone leaves out is great cost. Snow White is on the mend. During a poker run this spring her motor started sounding less than healthy. When she was finally able to get under the knife we found that the pistons float up to 3/8″ on the wrist pins. Not a good situation.

I know many of you are saying serves me right for running an Ultima instead of a tried and true Harley, but I and Ultima still stand behind the motor even after this. The truth is that Ultima sells thousands of these motors every year with only a handful of them failing.

Even Harley has their occasional dud even after 110 years of R&D. I have friends who dumped over $15G into a motor to make 20hp less than me; another friend bumped his up to a Screaming Eagle Stage III only to have less power then before. Snow White turned out amazing horsepower and she will again, but like super heroes it will cost me some money.

We cannot find a direct cause other then extreme severe detonation. Ultima is stumped as to the problem because they had never encountered it before and neither has the several decades of experience Harley mechanics who are performing the surgery. It is a major rebuild, major down time to the point that I don’t think she will be back on the road this summer.

With that I’ve gone to the dark side. Temporarily at least. Now that I can ride again, I don’t want to be left standing in the parking lot so I picked up a cheap 1984 Kawasaki KN750 LTD to boot around on for the summer until Snow White is back home.

It is strange being on an 80’s metric cruiser. The seating seems wrong even though this is one of the more low slung models. Fellow riders on metrics return my wave, something that was fading away riding my “Harley”, and just a general indifference from people.

On Snow White and my other Harleys people would either point and wave or scowl and run. On the Kawi I’m just another guy on a bike.

The Kawi will have to do for now. When I’m finished with her I might wash away the 20+ years of dirt and grime and sell her to the next lucky fellow and pay for the expensive repair bill for Snow White.

North Carolina Abortion Debate Pushes Aside Motorcycle Safety Concerns–WASHINGTON — When the North Carolina state Senate unanimously passed SB 353 on April 8, it was a good day for motorcycle safety advocates. The bill would increase penalties for violating a motorcyclist’s lane, forcing the driver to go off the road or change lanes. And it looked like an easy ride to becoming law.

But on Wednesday, state House Republicans took SB 353 and attached anti-abortion provisions, turning the legislation into one of the most controversial bills this session. On Thursday, the measure passed the state House in a far-from-unanimous 74-41 vote. Every Democrat voted against it and all but one Republican voted for it. “You never want to see that happen to your bill, obviously, but it does happen,” said Paul Wilms, a former lobbyist in the state and a current member of the Concerned Bikers Association of North Carolina (CBA).

The legislation still seems headed for passage, however. It now goes back to the Senate, which, in addition to embracing the motorcycle safety provisions, had earlier voted for a similar anti-abortion measure.

On Friday, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) said he would sign the bill if it reached his desk. CBA Legislative Director Doc Ski helped write SB 353’s original language. He said he wasn’t that upset that the abortion provisions were attached, especially since the legislation will likely still go forward. “I didn’t really mind at all,” he said. “If for some reason it wasn’t going to get approved or didn’t get forwarded … the bill will still be in the House, and it will still be alive. We can just remove that language, and our sponsor can just reintroduce the bill.” Ski noted, however, that his group would not weigh in on the rest of the revised SB 353, which has a title that now contains 123 words on abortion and just 17 related to motorcycles.

“I know abortion is a very controversial subject, and CBA recognizes that abortion is not a motorcycle rights issue, so we have no position on abortion,” he added. “Some of our members approve of the language of the abortion restrictions, and some of our members disapprove of the abortion restrictions. But that’s not an issue we have a position on as an organization.”

John Baucum, president of the motorcycle club Riders in Recovery, was less content with what House Republicans did. “I am personally disappointed that it is getting ‘lost’ by being co-opted into an incendiary piece of legislation that is totally unrelated to motorcycle safety,” he said. Wilms, the former lobbyist, argued that what Republicans did — taking a noncontroversial bill that has already passed one chamber and attaching unrelated provisions — is not that unusual in the North Carolina General Assembly.

The maneuver makes it easier to move new legislation, especially late in a session. In fact, quite often, the original language is completely taken out. “It says something about the credibility that has established in the General Assembly for his organization — the Concerned Bikers Association — over the years, and the respect they have for him and what he was trying to do with that bill, that they kept those provisions in there,” said Wilms.

Democrats on the state’s House Judiciary Committee argued that what was unprecedented about this piece of legislation was that Republicans added the anti-abortion language without first notifying either the public or Democratic lawmakers so that they had time to study the changes. At least one member who would have voted for SB 353 was unable to do so because of the new abortion provisions.

“I ride a motorcycle,” said Rep. Beverly Earle (D), who spoke out against the bill in a floor speech on Thursday. “And I want to let my motorcycle buddies know that when I vote against this, it’s not because I’m not concerned about their safety on the highways.”

PRE-OWNED REDUCTION AUCTION COMING–United Country Bonnette Auctions announces an inventory reduction used motorcycle auction event, Saturday, August 3, 2013, according to Barbara Bonnette, GPPA, CAI and AARE.

“This year Harley-Davidson celebrates its 110th Anniversary year, and we are pleased about working with owners Kate Ribar and Eddie Soberon at Renegade Harley-Davidson in Alexandria on this huge inventory reduction event,” said Bonnette. “This is going to be a spectacular auction with over 75 pre-owned bikes up for bid, plus a lunch in the showroom to view the new 2014 Harley-Davidson models.”

The event will take place at 2013 N. Mall Drive in Alexandria, La. Free lunch will be served in the showroom beginning at 11:30am where the public may view the new models. The auction will start at 12:30pm local time in Renegade’s new 10,000 square foot service center next door.

“We pride ourselves on maintaining a super large cross-section of all models, especially the coveted CVO’s. We have to clear out our pre-owned inventory to make room for the 2014 Harley-Davidson models,” said owner Kate Ribar. “We are excited to offer the pre-owned inventoryup for bid.”

Renegade Harley-Davidson is a full-service dealership, offering everything for motorcycle enthusiasts from sales and service to rentals and a training center. Active with the local HOG chapter and numerous community events throughout the year, they are one of the top 10 dealerships for new units sold nationwide out of approximately 678 dealers.

Financing will be available. Bikes may be previewed during regular business hours and beginning at 7am on auction day. Live on-site as well as online bidding is available for this auction. Bonnette said, “Auctions are a great opportunity to purchase the motorcycle of your dreams at the price you want to pay.” She had these tips for someone considering purchasing at auction:

* Attend the auction preview to inspect items.

* Know what item is being auctioned and the current bid.

* Know what the asking price is.

* Buy what you like and can afford.

“Decide before the auction starts what you are willing to pay for the item you want to bid on. This technique can save people money and guilt,” Bonnette said. “It’s easy to get caught up and carried away in the fast paced bidding action at an auction. Remember, if you bid and win, it’s yours.”

MOTORCYCLE MEDICS SAVING LIVES BY REACHING PATIENTS FASTER–

By Ashley Kewish

SALT LAKE CITY — When there’s a medical emergency, seconds can make the difference in saving a life. And because of that, the Davis county Sheriff’s Department is putting their paramedics on motorcycles, ensuring they’re first to the scene to treat the patient immediately.

Deputy Christopher Pope has been with the Davis County Sheriff’s Department for six years, but an average day at work is more than issuing citations, making arrests and keeping the peace. That’s because he’s also a paramedic.

Pope is part of a select few in the state who are cross-trained to be both law enforcement and lifesaver.

“We can carry everything we need to treat a critical patient, and a regular patient immediately and then we have a partner that shows up in a regular SUV with full gear in the next few minutes,” Pope said.

Being on a motorcycle allows the 42 county-wide deputy paramedics access in hard-to-reach places like bike paths and extra maneuverability in traffic.
“We’ve treated someone in the middle of a parade where we had to break off from doing our tricks and go and treat a patient,” he said.

The Davis County Motors Division was actually inspired by the Miami-Dade fire department where they were able to decrease response times from about 15 minutes downs to three minutes. Now they have a similar goal.

“We can carry everything we need to treat a critical patient, and a regular patient immediately and then we have a partner that shows up in a regular SUV with full gear in the next few minutes.” Deputy Christopher PopeAlthough the department hasn’t studied how their response time has improved, Pope says he knows the program saves lives, most recently with a woman suffering a massive heart attack.

We transported her to the hospital and skipped the ER and she could go straight to surgery,” Pope said. “She came out with no problems at all, no side effects.”

The motorcycles are equipped with IVs, an oxygen tank, breathing tubes and pain medication.
“It doesn’t look like it can carry a whole lot, but we carry a bit more than what the average person would think,” he said.

If Pope comes across an emergency situation where a patient broke the law, the protocol is clear.

“We separate the two. We tell them, look I’m a paramedic. I’m here to treat you, I’m not worried about law enforcement right now,'” Pope said.
This helps to keeping the department’s main goal front and center and hopefully sharing their idea with other departments.

“Treating patients, getting to them fast and getting that treatment on board as soon as we possibly can,” he said.

CASPER, WYOMING MOTORCYCLE RIDE HONORS GOLD STAR FAMILIES, FALLEN SOLDIERS—

By SALLY ANN SHURMUR

Four private vehicles and a group of 20-some motorcycles lined up behind the City of Casper police car. Casper Chief of Police Chris Walsh occupied the rear position, reds and blues flashing and siren sounding on his personal vehicle.
Sunday’s procession even may have looked like a celebration, but it wasn’t.

Inside the four private vehicles were Gold Star families — families who had given the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Gold Star parents Myron and JoAnn Zorn of Wright rode one of the motorcycles.

The event was organized by the Patriot Guard riders and the Natrona County United Veterans Council.

As the procession traveled down Poplar Street from the Events Center, motorists pulled over.
Turning onto West First Street, motorists again pulled over — the ultimate sign of respect.

The group pulled into the parking lot at the Tate Pump House, walking with the families to the Sun Up Ridge Memorial Wall, one of the late Leo Sanchez’s last and best ideas.

There, families saw the names of their loved ones on the final panel, the one labeled “Iraq & Afghanistan.”

Families knelt near the name of their son, husband, father, brother. Pictures were taken.
After the walk back to vehicles, the procession resumed — this time east on First Street and then Second. Brunchers outside Eggington’s waved, as if it was a celebration.

The next destination was Veterans Park, that lovely, shady little triangle of land just east of downtown Casper.

There, families saw that the names of their loved ones had also been inscribed on the Hands to the Sands monument, dedicated initially in 2006.
Walsh, a Marine veteran, served as master of ceremonies for the short event, the purpose of which was to rededicate the monument with the new names added.

“The fabric of America is in its families,” he said, as each Patriot Guard rider held an American flag encircling the crowd. “Families raised up these men and women, nurtured them and sent them off to protect us and protect this country. We prayed to God each night that they would all come home safely, but some did not. And it is those families who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Bishop Ken Kinner delivered the invocation and benediction, as well as the formal remarks of dedication.

And then the moment that all Gold Star families dread. The reminder of the worst day of their lives. The day that their loved one was laid to rest.
Rob Meloy picked up his trombone from under the shade of a tree, behind the assembled crowd.
As “Taps” began, so started the tears. Tears turned to sobs, loud and mournful. Shoulders shook, wet faces were wrapped in embraces.

Brenda Long of Burns made a dash for her car. She was on a mission to grab a box of tissues.
Her husband, Army Staff Sgt. Brian M. Long, is with her always. His face on the background of an American flag is tattooed on her left shoulder.
“That’s my baby,” she said through her sniffles.
Long was killed in a roadside bombing in Baghdad on June 10, 2007.

Their children, Sydney, Shelby and Sage, and her mother accompanied her to Casper on Sunday.

“The ceremony was really nice,” Brenda Long said, “until Taps.”

After the ceremony, lunch was served at VFW Post 9439.

NEW TRIKE COMMENT, New Bikernet Reader Comment!–BUILD YOUR OWN CAPTAIN AMERICA TRIKE

http://www.bikernettrikes.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=11287

Wow! The Captain America trike looks fantastic. I remember when the only bikes on the road had a huge rake and front tubes were as long as a Lincoln, and a padded huge king queen seat, just as high as the sissy bar was. Man, I could ramble on for a long while, but not too waste your time, the trike looks fantastic!

GUN NUT REPORT FROM AGENT ZEBRA–I think this is pertinent to bikers as many carry firearms when riding for self defense and many are out in the open where they might have to defend themselves, family members, or their property while on the road.

This no longer is about George Zimmerman, it’s about a Department of Justice serving political interests … The U.S. Department of Justice
on Monday afternoon appealed to civil rights groups and community leaders, nationally and in Sanford, for help investigating whether a federal criminal case might be brought against George Zimmerman for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, one advocate said. The DOJ has also set up a public email address to take in tips on its civil rights investigation … This no longer is about George Zimmerman. It’s about a Department of Justice, which does not deserve our trust and is a threat to our liberties.

–William A. Jacobson
Professor of Law,
Cornell Law School

A former employee of Florida State Attorney Angela Corey’s office plans to file a whistleblower lawsuit against George Zimmerman’s prosecutors,
his attorney told Reuters on Tuesday … Ben Kruidbos, Corey’s former director of information technology, was fired after testifying at a
pre-trial hearing on June 6 that prosecutors failed to turn over potentially embarrassing evidence extracted from Martin’s cell phone to the defense, as required by evidence-sharing laws.

Exclusive: Fired employee to file lawsuit against Zimmerman prosecutors

Not many people are willing to cross Corey. A Florida attorney I spoke with declined to go on record because of “concerns about retaliation” —
that attorney has pending cases that will require Corey’s cooperation.

The attorney mentioned colleagues who have refused to speak to the media
for the same reason.

Angela Corey’s Checkered Past
Her peers describe an M.O. of retaliation and overcharging.

“I think the [Zimmerman] jury made the right decision based on the
evidence presented, because the prosecution inadvertently set the standard so high that the jury had to be convinced that it was a deliberate act by Zimmerman that he was not at all defending himself.

It’s not a moral question, it’s a legal question and the American law requires that the jury listens to the evidence presented.”

GLADSTONE MOTORCYCLES TO PRODUCE BESPOKE BRITISH BOBBERS–Television presenter Henry Cole has ridden countless motorcycles as host of the British Travel Channel’s “World’s Greatest Motorcycle Rides” program for 11 series, but he’ll soon be introducing a line of motorcycles of his own with his new Gladstone Motorcycles company.

Named for Cole’s great-great-uncle, four-time British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, the new firm will produce limited runs of hand-built bespoke motorcycles. The company’s first model will be the Gladstone No. 1, a retro-styled bobber with a Triumph engine and a Metisse frame.

No further details have been revealed yet, thought the first images reveal a carbureted air-cooled Triumph Twin, spring seat and drum brakes.
Gladstone will produce nine units of the No. 1, which will make its public debut in September at the Salon Privé, luxury car show and Concours d’Elégance in London.

“Quite simply where else would you want to launch an exclusive, hand built, new British Motorcycle brand other than at Salon Privé? We are all terribly excited to be part of this fantastic event,” says Cole, who also hosts “The Motorbike Show” on British station ITV4.

GUEST STURGIS TRADEMARK EDITORIAL–
EDITOR’S NOTE: The following was Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie’s report to the Sturgis City Council concerning support of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc.

For 72 years, the city of Sturgis has hosted the Sturgis motorcycle rally. As the event has grown and emerged as an international phenomenon, its impact on the Community has intensi?ed. The impact upon local residents is significant in innumerable ways.

For an approximate two-week period the population swells anywhere from 20 to 100 times its customary size. It is not unrealistic to say that this impact vastly outweighs nearly every event in any city in America. For years there has been a desire by many of our residents for the Sturgis motorcycle rally to return some sort of annual ?nancial benefit to the Community to offset the inconveniences that are inherit to hosting this large of an event.

This sentiment is in no way unique to Sturgis. For example in Deadwood, the community receives a significant annual contribution because of the impacts it has endured because of the gaming industry. In fact, payments are made to each municipality within Lawrence County as compensation for the impacts caused by the gaming industry.

Numerous ideas have been floated whereby the community could earn proceeds to give back to community projects and charities. These range from toll booths to water bottle sales. Though some ideas are more feasible than others all have signi?cant hurdles that impair their ability to be enacted. There has been one concept that has been actively pursued and has a proven track record of creating annual funds that have been used to fund numerous local charities. This concept is the Sturgis motorcycle rally trademarks. Though the creation, defense and enforcement of the trademarks have proven to be quite contentious and divisive throughout the community, to date, it has produced the single largest return to the community.

For several years, the Chamber of Commerce had been working to perfect the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally trademarks. This effort proved to be tremendously expensive and resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal bills. Despite these challenges, it created royalty proceeds that funded numerous community projects and charities. It also created sponsorship opportunities which the city sold and used the proceeds to fund activities such as the library, community center, police department and parks. All of which would have otherwise needed to be cut or funded through additional property taxes.

Faced with numerous legal battles and expenses the Chamber transferred its interest in the Sturgis motorcycle rally trademarks to Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Inc. (SMRi) It is undeniable that this act was contentious and has fostered deep suspicion amongst several within our community; however, the transfer has occurred and for the first time the Sturgis motorcycle rally trademarks have been perfected and are all housed within one non-profit organization (SMRi).

At this point, it is impossible for the community to turn back the clock and rethink the innumerable decisions that have been made by countless individuals that have led the community to this point. What can however occur, is a unified effort that will rally the community and foster a supportive and accountable environment in which a sizeable return is provided to the community.

This return would be increased exponentially if the significant ongoing legal expenses would end. It is a sad fact that every dollar that is used to defend the validity of the Sturgis motorcycle rally trademarks against opponents whom themselves have competing trademark filings, is one less dollar donated to local charities and projects.

It has been proposed that the council formally adopt a resolution of support for the Sturgis® motorcycle rally trademarks and SMRi. This resolution of support would not provide financial compensation to SMRi nor would it tie the city to any of SMRi’s potential liabilities. Before the
Council proceeded with such a motion, it has asked that a public discussion be held to discover what concerns the residents of Sturgis had with such an action.

It would also be the desire that such a resolution would not necessarily support all of the decisions and actions that had previously occurred, it would however recognize the current situation and identify it as the best and most likely to succeed path by which the community would benefit.

Numerous individuals will undoubtedly be opposed to any proposed support of SMRi. It is highly noteworthy that one of the chief arguments of several of these individuals is that the marks belong to everyone. If this argument were to win the day, the existing historical source of charitable
funding for the community would, end. These individuals have failed to identify another single source to replace this vital income for our community.

In order to place this into perspective, one should recall that for the past two years, the royalty proceeds have generated more than $50,000 annually for local charities. During previous years, when the Chamber housed the trademarks, the Chamber also donated several hundreds of thousands of dollars to local charities. It is highly important to understand that several of the litigants and opponents themselves have competing applications for similar marks using the Sturgis name. These same individuals have not provided any promise or mechanism by which proceeds of their royalties would be returned to the Community.

These competing trademarks are used on apparel, sleeping bags, hats and more. Several of these items have been sold nationwide and to the best knowledge of the City, none of the proceeds from these sales have been reinvested into the community. Other individuals often state that if the City is supportive of SMRi, then any potential negative ruling and financial liability that would result would be transferred to the City. Though a very understandable concern, this would not occur. The act of supporting an organization or having a representative on a nonprofit board does not financially bind one entity to another.

Every year, the City’s budget includes a general fund revenue line item titled “Rally Sponsorship.” Many of the revenues deposited into this line originate from the city’s licensing program. The total value of the licensing program in 2012 was $269,440. These funds are directly reinvested into the Community by funding the Library, Community Center, Parks, Volunteer Fire Department and the Police Department. If these funds were eliminated significant reductions in these services would be required or a very significant property tax increase would be necessary.

Neither option would be beneficial for the Community.

Staff recommends that the community take time to express any concerns that they have and identify any questions that would need to satisfactorily answered before the City considers expressing its support of the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally trademarks and their non-profit owner SMRi.

VIEWERS WILL FLIP FOR THE SHOWROOM SHOWDOWNS IN VELOCITY’S ALL NEW SERIES DALLAS CAR SHARKS–

–DALLAS CAR SHARKS World Premiere on VELOCITY Tuesday, July 23 at 8:30PM ET–

(Silver Spring, Md.) – Auction surprises aren’t exclusive to storage containers – sometimes the drama unfolds on four wheels. Velocity’s all-new series DALLAS CAR SHARKS takes viewers to the Lone Star State where car enthusiasts from across America gather to participate in the ultracompetitive world of car flipping.

Here tough-talking, larger-than-life dealers compete to outbid and out-buy each other in the intense world of automobile auctions. They love the thrill of the bid nearly as much as the incredible cars they’re working hard to win, but are sometimes in for a rude awakening when the car they’ve won turns out to be a lemon. Velocity rolls out DALLAS CAR SHARKS beginning Tuesday, July 23 at 8:30 PM ET/PT.

In each episode of DALLAS CAR SHARKS, tempers flare and rivalries ignite over any number of cars ranging from a 1980 Corvette to a 1998 Official Indy 500 Pace Car. After winning the bidding wars the real work begins for the car sharks.

Now, they have to get down and dirty to inspect their purchases, and what they find under the hood reveals the true value of their skills on the bidding block. Each contender has his or her own distinguished reputation and unique bidding style in the auto flipping world. DALLAS CAR SHARKS features its fair share of personalities including:

•Tommy “The King” Spagnola, a true Texas family man who turns tough when it comes to turning over cars. “The King” has been in the business for 30 years with a family-run auto lot featuring a massive, museum quality show room.

•Ash “The Wise Guy” Rabah is the sometimes cocky, independent dealer who goes after cars across the spectrum and whose brash personality puts him smack dab into conflicts with the other sharks, especially Tommy.

•Martha Davis, known as “Mother Hen”, battles with being a woman in the used car world but is determined to succeed in order to provide for her family. “Mother Hen” loves to compete with and get the best of the “big boys”.

•JD Cole, Martha’s son, lives more on the edge than his mother does, taking big risks on flashy cars, much to his mother’s chagrin.

“DALLAS CAR SHARKS combines all the drama and big characters of an auction show in a style that is uniquely Velocity,” said Robert Scanlon, senior vice president of Velocity. “This series goes inside the art of the deal to show the level of competition and adrenaline that drives this market. It’s addictive television.”

DALLAS CAR SHARKS is produced for Velocity by AMS Pictures. Executive producer is Andy Streitfeld and senior producer is Randy Martin. David Lee is executive producer for Velocity. Robert Scanlon is senior vice president of Velocity.

SKEPTICISM GROWS OVER EVERYTHING—Surveillance program needs to be ‘reined in,’ says congresswoman

By Kevin Johnson USA Today

WASHINGTON — Republican and Democrat lawmakers expressed renewed skepticism Wednesday about the scope of the government’s surveillance operations and threatened to revoke authority for one of the programs recently disclosed by a former National Security Agency contractor that collects telephone records on tens of millions of Americans.

“I feel very uncomfortable about using aggregated … data on everybody,” Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., told Justice Department and NSA officials appearing before a House Judiciary Committee hearing. “This is unsustainable, outrageous and must be stopped immediately.”

Noting mounting concerns since details about the telephone records program and a separate operation that collects the communications of non U.S. citizens abroad were disclosed last month, Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., said there “are not enough votes to renew” the authority, at least for the vast phone records collection effort.

“This program has gone off the tracks and it needs to be reined in,”said Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif. But Justice Department and NSA officials asserted that the programs were the subject of strict oversight by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, Congress and agency officials.

“This is not done in some rogue manner,” Deputy Attorney General James Cole said.

We start off by stripping the heads down to bare castings, then we thoroughly and carefully inspect them for cracks chipped or broken fins, stripped threads, and anything else that requires attention.
After all of the flaws have been repaired, we install new valve guides and seats in the head.

Now we fit the valves to the guides by using a valve guide hone and plug gauges.

Next we perform a three-angle valve job while setting the proper valve stem protrusion for proper rocker arm geometry.

Once these critical dimensions have been obtained we install the valves in the heads.
During this process we re-surface the rocker arm pad that comes in contact with the valve stem and replace any pushrod balls that are worn beyond the boundaries of factory tolerances.

AUSTRALIAN CLUB REPORT, DUAL SHOOTING– The gunning down of two bikies in south-east Sydney related to a war between rival gangs. Murdered bikie Tyrone Lee Slemnick was a stand-over man about to be sentenced over attempts to extort $2500 from an inner-city brothel owner.

Slemnick, 37, was to be sentenced in the Downing Centre local court next week for demanding money with menaces from a Lucy Wong, the owner of the Fallen Angel Brothel in Newtown. He and an associate both pleaded guilty to the charges and were on bail awaiting sentencing.

Slemnick, a Hells Angel bikie, was gunned down during a turf war between rival gangs on Monday and is survived by three children to three different women. He was killed Monday in a drive-by shooting in a suspected retaliation attack as his gang pushes into the eastern suburbs – traditionally a Comanchero MC stronghold.

Slemnik was once the NSW full-contact kung-fu champion and came close to winning the Australian Muay Thai middleweight title in early 2000 during his time as a competitive fighter. An ongoing turf war between the Hells Angels and Comanchero bikie gangs is behind the drive-by shooting in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, which also left another man wounded.

“We are hopeful we can engage with personnel from both gangs to try to get them to evade any sort of retribution,” Detective Inspector Dave Laidlaw, of the homicide squad, said. “At this stage inquiries reveal that these persons have been engaged or associated with the OMCG (outlaw motorcycle gangs) around the area. We believe it is a dispute between two gangs, rival gangs. The motive could be a turf war or it could be a personal fight.”

Trouble between the two groups has been escalating ever since Hells Angels associate Anthony Zervos was bashed to death when the two gangs engaged in a huge brawl at Sydney Airport in 2009. Tensions rose further in February last year when the Hells Angels announced on their website that they had opened a Bondi Beach chapter, a move which sparked a number of incidents, including a car bombing.

Senior police said it’s common knowledge the Hells Angels are recruiting heavily and attempting to expand all over Sydney, not just in the east. Locals in Eastlakes and Mascot said they had noticed a lot of Hells Angels in the area recently.

“They have been in the pubs and cafes and most of them are of Turkish descent,” one local man said. The Comancheros, which has chapters all over Sydney, has traditionally had strong footholds in Maroubra and Coogee.

Until recently the Hells Angels were a smaller group centered in the inner west and the city. But since the airport brawl, the Hells Angels have been actively recruiting and significantly increasing its numbers and influence throughout Sydney. Two years ago a series of incidents, including a car bombing, were attributed to a turf war between the Comanchero and Notorious. But the Hells Angels recruitment drive has seen many Notorious members now “patching over” to them.

NEW JERSEY Ex-mail carrier delivered cocaine —NEWARK, N.J. — A former mail carrier who used her daily route to move cocaine shipments in falsely addressed packages has been sentenced to nearly four years in prison.

Christina Nunez, 30, of Lyndhurst also was ordered Wednesday to serve two years of supervised release once she’s freed from prison.

She had pleaded guilty to a complaint charging her with mail theft and conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine.

Her husband also pleaded guilty in the case and is now serving a 37-month sentence.Authorities say Nunez was responsible for moving more than 18 kilograms of cocaine from Oct. 2010 until her arrest last August. — Associated Press

IN THE WORKS AT D&D EXHAUST–
In the R&D Department we will have multiple bikes that pipes are in different stages of development. A product in the research and development stages doesn’t necessarily mean the pipe would be produced. A pipe may not be produced if it does not make power.

Right now we are developing a 2 into 1 exhaust for the HD V-Rod Muscle. With the introduction of the Muscle line, the oil fill dipstick has been moved to the right side of the motorcycle, which makes our existing pipe (and most other pipes on the market) block access to the dipstick. This problem has been fixed and are in the final stages of development.

Another pipe in the works is a Lowcat and Bobcat designed for the H-D breakout. The issue with the breakout model was a change in the oil tank which made the existing Lowcat and Bobcat line interfere with the oil tank vent line.

This issue has been addressed and we are in the final stages of development with the breakout model also.

Now for all you true performance and racing-inspired enthusiasts, we are in the initial stages of development on a 2-into-1 race exhaust for 2009-2013 Baggers with 120 CI or bigger engines with S&S B2 heads. The S&S heads are .200-inch taller with 2-inch exhaust outlets. Right now, to our knowledge, no one is building a pipe that is specifically designed for this high horsepower combination.

Stay tuned for future developments as we progress on these exciting projects.

Turbine-powered motorcycle aiming for 400 mph land speed record–

By Gary Gastelu, Fox news

A turbine-powered two-wheeler built to break the motorcycle land speed record made its public debut this past weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K.

The “52 Express ” will be driven by two-time Superbike World Champion James Toseland when it goes for the mark next year.

The record currently stands at 376.363 mph, set by Rocky Robinson in 2010, but Toseland and company have their eyes on breaking 400 mph.
Instead of riding on top of it like the Honda and Ducati bikes he used to race, Toseland will be sitting inside of an enclosed cockpit in a reclined position more like an F1 driver.

The Rolls Royce Gem turbine — originally designed for helicopters and rated at 1,000 shaft horsepower in that application — is placed behind the driver and sends power to the rear wheel via belt drive.

A Mickey Thompson pneumatic tire rated at 500 mph is fitted there, while a roller-coaster style cast polyurethane tire is used at the front, because no traditional tire small enough to fit can handle the type of speeds the 52 Express is aiming for.
Both will be bench tested on a custom rig to determine if they are up to the rigors of the run, while the shape of the bodywork has already been evaluated at the University of Derby for stability and proper engine breathing to help keep the turbine from stalling at speed.

But even though maximum velocity is the goal, project manager Robin Richardson — a veteran of the supersonic Thrust SSC land speed record-holding team — says they’ve aimed to build a safe vehicle first then make it fast, rather than try to do it the other way around.

To this end, the front and rear sections of the 52 Express carrying the engine and fuel tank are designed to break off in the event of an accident, while a safety capsule surrounding the driver and fitted with a fire suppression system offers the chance of surviving a high speed crash; a very clear and present danger the speed record world was reminded of this past Sunday when Bill Warner was killed during an attempt to break 300 mph on a sit-on bike at an airstrip in Maine.

As for where the 52 Express will make its record attempt, the team is still deciding between the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah and South Africa’s Hakskeen Pan, where another team is planning to go for overall land speed record of 763.035 mph in the four-wheel, jet and rocket-powered Bloodhound SSC later this year.

HAMSTER TURNS CAT BURGLAR–HIDDEN HILLS, Calif. (KTLA) — A 75-year-old grandfather was facing several felony charges Wednesday including robbery, burglary and assault with a deadly weapon after he was allegedly caught trying to break into a Hidden Hills home.

Ronald Snyder, a husband, father and grandfather, was arrested Sunday after deputies responding to a 911 call allegedly found him, with a gun, trying to force his way into a home.

“He tried to draw his gun, but deputies were able to restrain him and handcuff him without further incident,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Robert Wiard said.

Two handguns, including one with a silencer, along with a wig, gloves, rope, handcuffs and false law enforcement identification where allegedly found in Snyder’s car, according to authorities.
Snyder was believed to have gained access to the gated community because he recently owned a home there.

“We believe that he came upon financial hard times, and was committing the burglaries and the robberies for financial gain,” Waird said.
Snyder was linked to at least one other burglary in Hidden Hills, according to investigators.
His bail was set at $1 million.

Hamsters all over the globe are putting their paws together to create the legal dream team to defend their brother Hamster. “He’s innocent,” Waggs said in a recent interview. “It’s a frame.”–Lt Ball

ACLU: Government keeping track of where you’ve driven–Rights group says police are recording, storing data on millions of license plates.

–by James R. Healey and Fred Meier USA TODAY

Police are recording and storing information on millions of license plates that aren’t related to suspected violation of the law or any known activity of interest to law enforcement, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

The rights organization collected data supporting this claim through Freedom of Information requests in 38 states.

The license-plate scanners look like video cameras and generally are mounted in pairs on either the rear fender, the trunk or sometimes the roof of police cars and parking enforcement vehicles. Some also are mounted in stationary locations, such as road signs or bridges.

They are, “in effect, government location tracking systems recording the movements of many millions of innocent Americans in huge databases,” said ACLU staff attorney Catherine Crump, the report’s lead author. And the ACLU says there is little supervision or control over the data recorded, in most cases without the citizen knowing.??

The ACLU says only “a tiny fraction of the license plate scans are flagged as ‘hits.’ ” For example, in Maryland, for every million plates read, only 47 — or 0.005 percent — were potentially associated with a stolen car or a person wanted for a crime.??

“Yet, the documents show that many police departments are storing, for long periods of time, huge numbers of records on scanned plates that do not return ‘hits,’ ” the group says. “For example, police in Jersey City, N.J., recorded 2.1 million plate reads last year. As of August 2012, Grapevine, Texas, had 2 million plate reads stored, and Milpitas, Calif., had 4.7 million.”

Milpitas police Sgt. Frank Morales said the municipality with a population of 68,000 “is a small community, but we attract very many visitors. We have a large mall here, the Great Mall” and that could account for the outsize number of license plate records. It’s a discount mall situated between two interstate highways and two freeways.

The ACLU last summer, in 38 states and Washington, filed nearly 600 Freedom of Information Act requests asking federal, state, and local agencies how they use the readers. The 26,000 pages of documents produced by the agencies that responded — about half — include training materials, internal memos and policy statements.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARMENT MOST NECESSARY WORD–poetaster POH-it-as-ter, noun:

an inferior poet; a writer of indifferent verse.

Someone who writes verses but does not produce this essence is called a “poetaster.” A poetaster is a fraudulent poet, a non-poet.

— Frederick Busch, Letters to a Fiction Writer, 2000

Rotten as a poetaster or a second-rate musician reduced to beggary.

— Carmen Boullosa, Cleopatra Dismounts, 2003

Poetaster entered English in the late 1500s. It is a combination of the word poet and the rarely used Latin suffix -aster which denotes something that imperfectly resembles or mimics the true thing.

RESPONSE TO READERS COMMENT ABOUT WELDING–Cactus,

First I might like to point out that this sentence was “not a quote” and the story was not written by me either. I helped the author (Ronnie) with some stuff around the shop so he’d have some images to work with and discussed some of the basics of welding and such to help with his story.

It’s been quite some time but if I remember correctly this story was written with the intention of giving some very basic info for those who know little to nothing about our trade, not detailed instructions, technical information or tips for seasoned professionals. . . while I know that is something I’d be able to do, it sounds too much like a real job to me and I’d rather hang out in the shallow end of the pool anyway.

I have done a few stick welding jobs over the years and have no trouble getting it done right, it’s just not something I volunteer for because I’d much rather be TIG weld ( it’s just my preference ), and though I do enjoy using the MIG process for certain projects it’s not my favorite either.

While I agree MIG is a fairly simple process and that it might be easy to learn the basics (including setting up the machine) or how to melt a wad of metal together it still takes some time to learn how to do it well . . . and I think you know that also.

Maybe it’s not as easy to find the right wording as you thought hehe! “HERE, PULL THIS TRIGGER” seriously, your going to pick me to death and then use a line like this to describe the MIG welding process ? . . I think we both know there is a little more to it than that haha!

Please understand that I am not trying to be ugly, just trying to spur a little thought, help you understand my position and lighten the situation as much as possible! Have yourself a beautiful day under the hood Cactus. . .I am determined to do the same!

Victory ‘Show Us Your Custom’ Contest Winner–Al Engel won the bagger category of the Victory Facebook page’s “Show Us Your Custom” contest with a Victory Cory Ness Signature Series Cross Country that was even further customized by Al and the team at Coastal Victory (Murrells Inlet, SC) and HotVic.com. Al is a retired New Jersey police officer in New Jersey now living in South Carolina.

Al started riding in 1989 and got his first Victory in 2009 when he bought a used Jackpot. Of course like most bikers he had to personalize it. That same year he bought a new Kingpin 8-Ball for his wife Terri. The following year they entered the world of baggers and then around Christmastime they bought the new 2011 Cory Ness Signature Cross Country and began transforming it into the show piece it is now. But, Al hints there may be more changes in the Works.

Here’s what’s on the contest-winning bike:

For Show:
• Ness accessories, including: 6° triple tree, chromed rotors, teardrop mirrors, flip windshield, retro chrome master cylinder reservoir, chrome Battistini grips and toe pegs
• Victory chrome master cylinder cover and highway pegs

• Hotvic chrome “106” derby cover, chrome cam side cover, and chrome clutch cover and cam adjuster covers
• Witchdoctor’s chrome shift linkage and front axel spikes
• Numerous bolts and screws were replaced with red anodized fasteners
• Forged highway bars were drilled to match the wheels, then re-chromed
• Forged bar cover, custom painted with Coastal Victory skull logo
• Massive DX4 960-watt amp with Focal speakers, 6.5” in dash and 6×9 in the saddlebag
For Go:

Baird/AMD MAY 2013 Harley-Davidson Dealer Report–For its latest survey of Harley-Davidson dealer trends, Robert W. Baird & Co. surveyed a total of 62 dealerships, with the selection covering the US, Canada, Switzerland, Austria, UAE and Czech Republic.

As part of its survey Baird looked at the level of consumer recovery in the motorcycle market, and it did this by comparing unemployment rates with consumer confidence. Following a record level of unemployment in January 2010, when it reached 10 percent, it has now fallen to eight percent.

These changes have been reflected in the consumer confidence index that has risen from 60 points to 70 points over the same period of time.
The effect of these changes can be seen in the percentage change of annual on-highway industry retail units growth. In 2009 the figure reached a record -40 percent, and that has now changed to two percent growth in 2012.

Baird’s survey results also show that the Motor Company’s retail sales are improving both domestically and internationally since a record low in 2010. It is not only the new Harley-Davidson market that is showing signs of recovery, as used motorcycle values are also showing continued increases. As of May 2013, the used value of the latest three year models from Harley-Davidson was 97 percent of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price.

However, despite the economic improvements, many dealers have reported customer traffic number and new bike retail sales as being below expectations and the issue being the unseasonal weather, with reports of heavier than average rain fall and lower temperatures negatively affecting the beginning of the riding season.

As a direct result of the poor weather, US dealers who completed the Baird survey reported nearly flat sales of new motorcycles at the beginning of the second quarter and sales of used machines down nine percent.

Among international dealers who completed the survey Canadian dealers report a fall of three to five percent on year-on-year sales figures for new models, with used being down almost 15 percent. In other international markets new bikes sales were much more positive with sales up almost 10 percent. However, used bike sales were short and were reported as being down over 10 percent.

When asked for their thoughts on the reasons behind the slow start to the sales season, dealer responses included: “Cold weather has held back sales,” and “Traffic is down 2,700 door swings. The weather has been cold and rainy.” However, other dealers who responded to the Baird survey had a more positive view of effects of the weather, saying: “Rainy weather, but not slowing sales, selling 300 percent more rain suits,” and “As soon as it stopped snowing in May, our traffic and our sales went through the roof. Business is booming and doesn’t appear to be slowing down. 2013 looks bright.”

In the survey, the majority of respondents (79 percent) said the inventory levels were about right (51 percent) or too low (28 percent), which is a reflection of the changes made at the Motor Company to how it manufactures new machines at its York facility with the introduction of surge production.

The strategy is intended to use flexible capacity to surge production ahead of peak retail season to have the right bikes in the right place at the right time. Baird suggests that on average dealerships had 56 bikes at the end of the first quarter compared to 45 at the same time last year.
Indeed in response to the production and resulting inventory changes dealers’ comments included good and bad feedback, ranging from: “Inventory too high due to lack of traffic,” and “The new inventory allocation is getting better – more new [units] for customers to choose from early in the year.”

The Baird survey concluded with questioning dealers on how the factory’s promotions have influenced showroom traffic and sales. The responses were generally less than positive. “The Motor Company’s promotions remain unfocused and uncompetitive.” “What promotions? The 110th Anniversary is in Milwaukee and nothing is done to build traffic to dealers. The marketing geniuses should be ashamed.”

SMITTIE’S DRAG RACING REPORT–Verl “Smittie” Smith and VSR4V.E.T.S Summer Update

Verl “Smittie” Smith has been racing and after a recent excursion to the Northwest Dragbike’s Woodburn race has these thoughts.

“Look up the word ” lucky” in the dictionary & you should see my picture , we lost compression in the front cylinder, due to a sheared cam gear key! The exhaust valve in all reality should have collided with the piston but didn’t and VSR4V.E.T.S made it to the semi-finals at Northwest Dragbike’s second race of 2013 in Woodburn Oregon.”

“Our wounded warrior still ran a 9.14ET at 146.35 We sent the heads to Steve at UFP(Uncle Filthy Porting) he massaged the heads and manifold. The cams went to Craig at Black Widow cams to get tickled a little. Rick at R/T Performance welded the cam gears so this couldn’t happen again ,and then Al & Nacho from Evolution Industries stepped up with some new primary goodies–an excellent belt drive & lock-up clutch to accent all of our other modifications!!”

“All systems are go for Sturgis , NHRA Div. 6 in Seattle and The Northwest Nitro Nationals (former AHDRA race) still an all Harley venue and the event will be open to all “

VSR4VETS is also preparing for a busy Sturgis Race and Rally week beginning Aug 2-3 with the bike at Bikers Choice at Sturgis, Next the 15th annual Griz Robinson Memorial Bike Show at Ft. CALIFORNIA CHECK POINTS–PINE VALLEY, CA — Driving down an American Interstate Highway (I-8), a man was stopped at a roadblock set up by federal agents demanding that he produce his papers.

These internal checkpoints are now regularly set up well within U.S. territory under the guise of protecting the border. There are dozens of permanent highway checkpoints all over the southwest United States.??

When the Federal agents attempted to question the driver, Robert Trudell, he simply remained silent. His car was rigged with multiple cameras which recorded the entire encounter. ??

After being ignored by the citizen, one of the Gestapo agents deployed a spike strip in front of his vehicle. German Shepherds were used to perform a scent search on the exterior of his car.

??Finally he was ordered to a secondary checkpoint area, where the agents broke into his window and forcibly extracted him. He was cuffed, patted down, and his vehicle was searched.??

He remained handcuffed for 6hrs, did not get to use a toilet for 10 hours. He was fingerprinted, photographed, and left in a jail cell. ??

Robert says on his video that he was given a “10 second Interrogation,” and then was dropped off on foot at 10:30 PM in El Cajon, more than 25 miles away.??

THAT DID IT—We have several features headed your way. A brother asked me to help him with a grant, and of course I expanded it to be the new Code of the West. It’s about bolstering freedom in this country and still making folks safe, through education and training. But I can’t mention freedom or it won’t get funded. Is that nuts or what? Hang on for a rough draft next week.

I’m finishing the official Bikernet Weather Vane. Working on aligning my Mudflap Girl, and trying to help Mike Jones create the ultimate biker movie. How about those projects?

Do or die, you’ll experience the trials and tribulations right here, as I spill my guts about any project I stumble into. What the hell, we only go around once. Let’s give it hell every day.

In the meantime, I try to post an article on Bikernet everyday. I’m working on Eric Bennett’s 103-inch engine tech right now. You’ll see it next week, along with a couple of bike features, a book chapter, and the grant rough draft. Suppose I don’t have time for whiskey and a redhead. Wait, I’m headed to Malibu on Saturday for a few hours of searching for antiques. You never know…

Have a helluva weekend,

Ride Forever,
