BIKERNET IN SEARCH OF FREEDOM THURSDAY NEWS FOR October 9, 2014

Hey,

We are living through some crazy times, once more. Maybe it’s the fast moving technology driving us to accomplish more faster. Maybe it’s the expanding population? More folks, more pals, more business associates, more, more, and more.

I still don’t get the robotic business. So we eliminate folks from the workplace. I found out another new dock in Long Beach is fitting up automated container loading capabilities. Tra Pac in Los Angeles did the same thing, eliminating lots of jobs. So if the jobs are gone, what will peeps do, and how will they buy the products created by robots? Maybe I’m just old and don’t get it.

Let’s hit the news. There’s lots of action this weekend, including the flat track finals. I’m heading out as a guest of Saddlemen, a major Flat Track Sponsor.

The Bikernet Thursday News is sponsored by Cycle Source Magazine. Shortly you will see monthly Bikernet News columns on the pages of Cycle Source. Never a dull moment.

THE YAMAHA SPORTSTER–Inspired by the past, built for the future.

Now Yamaha is opening the door to the world of customization to every rider with the XV950– a bobber that encapsulates the character and personality of those original back street creations in a new neo retro Japanese look.

Compact and stylish with a low seat height, the XV950 delivers a refined and agile ride while retaining the character that is a critical part of owning such an individual machine. Yamaha’s flat line style and use of exposed metal components accentuates the bike’s pure simplicity while the V-twin motor provides spirited performance and unquestioned reliability. Stripped back and stylish, the XV950 provides a perfect entry into the world of customization.

Details

Air-cooled 60-degree SOHC V-twin engine
Revised intake system for outstanding efficiency
Compact air cleaner for improved torque
Boosted low to mid-range performance
2-into-1 exhaust pipe hugs the engine’s form

Stainless steel covers
Double cradle frame for light and agile handling
12-spoke cast wheels with optional ABS
Wave style 298mm discs with floating rotors
Jewelry-look round LED rear light

Interesting, just as we hear about the H-D factory considering eliminating Sportsters from the line-up, then the Japanese manufacturers attempt to copy them. –Bandit

HIGHLIGHT: MICHIGAN –Officer chooses car seat over ticket

–by Trace Christenson, The (Battle Creek, Mich.) Enquirer

EMMETT TOWNSHIP: A police officer is getting recognition from around the globe for his decision to make a purchase instead of writing a ticket.

Officer Ben Hall, 31, of the Emmett Township Public Safety Department didn’t plan for all the publicity when he pulled a car over Friday.

“There was a call stating that a young child was in the car without a car seat or a booster seat,” he said. “Just then, the vehicle passed right in front of the station.”

Hall, an officer for about 2 years, said he stopped the car, found a woman driving and saw Lexi DeLorenzo in the passenger seat. DeLorenzo’s 5-year-old daughter was in the back seat, wearing just a seat belt.

“She knew she was supposed to have a booster seat but (said) she had a rough couple of months,” Hall said. “Her car had been repossessed with the child’s car seat.”

Hall is an active officer, making traffic stops and writing tickets, Lt. Tony Geigle said. And he has given citations before when a child was not properly restrained in a vehicle.

“What she was going through is something I could have been going through,” Hall said. “Giving her a ticket was not the answer.”

DeLorenzo said she was working part time, lost her car and had gotten a ride from a friend to pick up her daughter.

“I was in a position to help her and her child and provide a little relief,” Hall said. “I talked to the mother about different organizations that give out car seats but it was night, Friday, on a weekend and we needed something right now.”

Hall told DeLorenzo to meet him at Wal-Mart, and they went to the car-seat section.

“I am single and don’t have kids, so I don’t know where the baby section is,” he said. But with help from a saleswoman, they found a seat that the little girl liked, and he paid the $55.

A Wal-Mart employee took pictures. Hall said he didn’t know they were posted on the department’s Facebook page.

He said memories of children killed in accidents contributed to his decision.

“This child needs to be in a booster seat,” he said. “I did nothing that police officers don’t do on a daily basis a thousand times across the country.”

DeLorenzo could not be reached Wednesday but did post a statement on the Emmett Township Facebook page.

“This officer has changed my life, not just because he purchased a car seat for my 5-year old, but because he has opened my eyes and given me hope.”

UNCLE MONKEY TACKLES FREEDOM
Freedom. The meaning seems significantly more hollow each day. Society has become complacent. We live a nanny state. Gone are the days when freedom rung true, when we could stand proud of who we were, where we were from.

Somewhere we took a step back, signed away our rights and freedom for the security of lack of responsibility. Common sense isn’t so common any more. There was a time when you took responsibility for you, for your life, when spilling hot coffee on yourself was a lesson to be more careful not a pay day.

The latest wave of car commercials spout off how they have warning lights to notify you when a front end crash is eminent. They have warning lights now to tell you when you are drifting into another lane. It is for the better of society, for the better of mankind.

Sadly we already had warning lights for front collisions, they were called brake & taillights but they were outside of our little bubbles, little cocoons of self absorption behind the wheel.

The warning system for drifting into another lane is something that has been around for ages too. The painted lines of lanes and highways constantly told us if we were getting too close, the ditches on the other side made sure we stayed center, focused, but they were outside of our little bubbles, our little cocoons.

Often times these changes started out harmless enough, innocent enough. When SGI, the local vehicle insurance company with the monopoly, stated that they wanted to introduce mandatory inspections for homebuilt and rebuilt salvage bikes it seemed like a good idea. I’ve seen my fair share of people thinking they can build bikes out of soft gas piping; some bikes are death traps.

It seemed like a good idea that they should be a safety net to weed them out. What we got instead was a flat out ban on all rebuilt, modified, or custom built motorcycles in my province. To build a bike with an aftermarket frame it has to have a federal compliance sticker. Only major manufactures like Harley, Honda, and a handful of others qualify for compliance stickers so any and all aftermarket frames are illegal.

The second card up their sleeve is that once a VIN has been declared total loss it loses its compliance sticker with the federal government, so even if I go through Harley-Davidson to order a replacement frame it is illegal and cannot be registered. Even working on existing motorcycles has been chop blocked because a motorcycle frame cannot be registered if it has been modified or welded.

Apparently motorcycle frames are birthed whole and intact because any welding on them makes them weak and unsafe. The goal was to keep unsafe motorcycles off the road; we just forgot that society thinks all bikes are unsafe.

LAND SPEED LOUISE WINS–2014 Valentine Award from Society of Automotive Historians

Los Angeles, CAThe Southern California Chapter of the Society of Automotive Historians named “LandSpeed” Louise Ann Noeth the winner of the 2014 James E Valentine Memorial Award in the periodicals category.

Presented for “Excellence in Automotive Historical Research,” the entry entitled
“Counting Down to a Century of Speed” appeared in the October 2013 issue of the
GoodGuys Gazette. The 18-page feature encapsulates 100 years of land speed W racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

“One judge commented about the possibility of expanding the article into a full
length book,” explained Bob Ewing, Chairman, Valentine Award committee, “

‘I would look forward to seeing something along those lines on the shelves.’

Another S judge commented the entry had ‘considerable value in a number of ways,’ but also felt it could have been edited better, and that the lack of captions on some photos
left him wondering which vehicle was which.”

Noeth, an acknowledged expert on the subject matter, was equally grateful for the
award as well as the critical remarks.

“A new book is underway!” said author Noeth. “One judge, a retired college
professor, said that there should have been more detail into how the research into
the article was done. As a street urchin who learned her craft through the tender
mercies of thoughtful, yet tough university-trained editors through the years, and Bandit, I don’t automatically think about creating a bibliography when hunting down historical facts – but I will now.”

The Valentine Memorial Award is named for the late J.H. Valentine, at one time
the recognized authority of automobiles built in Los Angeles. Valentine devoted his
life to accurately compiling nearly insignificant data on early automobiles one by one. With no chance of personal wealth, he ensured that future historians would have a large quantity of priceless material.

The Valentine Award honors authors whose automotive historical research is linked to people and events in California, but does not preclude significant historical milestones anywhere in the world.

Noeth was first honored in 2002 by the SAH SoCal Chapter, winning the Valentine S for her book “Bonneville Salt Flats.” She has repeatedly earned additional honors through the years for her historical work.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS NOW OPEN–Nothing sucks more than that moment during an argument when you realize you’re wrong.

I was driving through northern Illinois last night listening to a call-in program on WGN in Chicago . People were calling in all upset about the goat’s head sent to Cubs owner Tom Ricketts at Wrigley Field. Some guy called in from Indiana and said, “Why are you all so upset cause someone sent a goat’s head to Wrigley Field? Aren’t you the guys that sent a horse’s ass to the White House?”

Today’s Short Reading from the Bible.
From Genesis: “And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth.” Then He made the earth round…and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY STILL OPEN--Just because someone doesn’t love you the way you want them to, doesn’t mean they don’t love you with all they have. Ralph and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool , Ralph suddenly jumped into the deep end.

He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there.

Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled him out.

When the Head Nurse Director became aware of Edna’s heroic act she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she now considered her to be mentally stable.

When she went to tell Edna the news she said, ‘Edna, I have good news and bad news. The good news is you’re being discharged, since you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the life of the person you love… I have concluded that your act displays sound mindedness.

The bad news is, Ralph hung himself in the bathroom with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so sorry, but he’s dead.’

Edna replied, ‘He didn’t hang himself, I put him there to dry..

How soon can I go home?’

Happy Mental Health Day!

BOOK OF THE WEEK FROM WOLFGANG, BIKER BASICS SERIES— Custom Motorcycle Fabrication

Owner of Bare Knuckle Choppers and long time motorcycle builder and fabricator, Paul Wideman is the perfect author for this book. With experience as both a hands-on builder and technical editor for Cycle Source Magazine, Paul has exactly the skill-set needed to write a book on fabrication.

Paul starts at the beginning, with a discussion of the materials commonly used to fabricate custom motorcycle frames, fenders, brackets and all the rest. This discussion includes not only steel but also aluminum and stainless.

Joining metal – welding – is an essential part of building almost anything and the copy here includes, TIG and MIG welding, as well as Stick and Oxy/Acetylene welding. In each case, Paul covers sub topics like penetration, strength, getting started and the relative size of the heat-affected-zone.

Most custom motorcycle frames, as well as many of the brackets that hold things together, are made from tubing. Thus the book includes an entire section on bending and notching tubing to achieve a precise fit between any two parts prior to welding.
The other skill a good fabricator needs is machining on both a mill and lathe. Paul walks the reader through the basics for both types of machining: set up, cutting speed and tools, lubrication and cooling, and safety.

Some commonly fabricated parts like handle bars and exhaust systems are covered as separate topics, along with sections on building simple brackets and mounts.

Learn how professionals like Paul bypass the catalog and build their parts from scratch instead. This is an essential building book, helping you build the necessary skills needed to assemble a truly unique kick-ass motorcycle.

EDITORIAL CORRECTION–Love Vicki’s blog of the Cannonball, thanks for the coverage. It was great to have had the luxury of such a capable lady with us this time. She was not only very needed, but a complete joy to have along.

One thing on the article, though. It’s reported on page one as a caption that #80’s 1915 Indian was the oldest bike. It isn’t. The oldest belongs to rider #56, Victor Boocock, a 1914 H-D. He has been along with each of the MCRs but this is the first time he’s stayed to complete the entire route. He is in his 70s, though not the oldest rider. A very sweet man who deserves the recognition of having the oldest bike in the run, Could that be changed?

Thanks Keith. Hope all is well.

JIMS TECH REVIEW— I posted this review on my Amazon account, which is where I bought this.

Thought I’d share it here, as when I was looking, didn’t find to much info from actual buyers of this. Bought it *because* of the BikerNet test/review.

Yep…It works…let me get that out of the way first. It works, and works well.

After building up and Hot Rodding my 2007 Twin Cam Road King, (Feuling Oil Pump, Billet Cam Plate, Woods 55 Cams, Fuel Moto Push Rods, Feuling Lifters, head work and 103ci top end, PV1 Fuel Management) , my bike, which had always run hot as it was, (Stock 96ci) became pretty unbearable. Routinely hitting 300 degrees + temps, hitting the oil breakdown point more than once.

(Red Line 20/50 and even 20/60 Synthetic)

I wasted time and money doing the Jagg Fan Assisted Oil Coolers. First one was the one low mounted. No air flow and no way to keep it from leaking…no room under there…so I then went with the Side-mount. Aside from it was fugly it also had issues with leaking and I also never understood how the fan would point forward into the wind and then when I was going at speed how that was supposed to work, etc.

They maybe reduced the temp 10 or so degrees…which really didn’t help all that much.

So, after looking at the reviews for the Lenale and also the Wards Fans, Love Jugs, etc…was a little concerned when I didn’t see too many reviews for this JIMS Flowforce, but this one on your BikerNet was pretty detailed, so gave it a shot.

Fairly easy installation, if you know your way around a wrench, should be able to do this, no issues.

Then went for a ride….around Chicago…in almost stopped dead traffic. I usually hit the shoulders or bicycle lanes (have too, can’t sit in traffic in Chicago on a Harley), but always have to keep an eye out for the law.

This time, just stopped, go, stopped go etc… Fan kicked in the way it was supposed to and I kept checking my oil temp gauge. 10 miles of this and usually my EITMS kicked in, and usually pushed 320 degrees or so like this….this time, with the fan running…only hit like 220. Thinking maybe this was a cooler day or something…took it back to the shop…unplugged the fan, and hit the road again…let it hit 300…stopped, plugged it back in…sat there…not moving. Watched it steadily drop until it hit like 240 or so in just about 5 or 6 mins…then rode it some and it dropped back lower to the 220 range… so I have to give it its props.

So, for less than the $450 cost of the Jagg Fan-assisted oil coolers, which only give me maybe 10 degrees off (they *say 20) this whacked approx. 80 or so off my oil temp gauge.

Buy it. It works.

BIKERNET BAGGERS CO-EDITOR OFFERS TERRIFIC SHIPPING SERVICE— Many at the shows asked this question: How to ship motorcycles & or parts Internationally. Besides being a photographer, I have been a US Customs Broker / Foreign Freight Forwarder since 1983. Just last week we shipped 4 of the classic Indian Larry Motorcycles in a 20′ container from Port Newark NJ to Milan Italy for a show in November.

We also generated a CARNET (document that allows the goods to travel between countries for exhibition free of duty). Between our company (721 LOGISTICS) and our agents worldwide, we have a very coordinated & trusted group that prepares freight for export & re-import.

As I spoke with everyone at the show about this, many stated that they have had invitations from shows abroad and did not know what move to make next, even with the show willing to pay the bill. I wanted to pass this around & ask you to share this as well. This is our specialty so if the need arises, we can assist.

ROGUE BAD COP INVESTIGATION
I have seen numerous reports on TV about Inmates Filing Income Tax Returns and now it Turns Out At Least One Prison Guard Was Doing It. The question is How Many Others Are?

TAMPA

Corrections officer gets prison time .

A former Florida corrections officer is going to prison for a tax fraud scheme in which he acknowledged stealing inmates’ identities.

U.S. District Judge James Moody sentenced 26-year-old Jerry St. Fleur to more than four years behind bars. St. Fleur pleaded guilty in July to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

According to a plea agreement, St. Fleur used his job at the Zephyrhills Correctional Facility between January 2011 and May 2014 to illegally obtain personal identifying information from current and former inmates. St. Fleur then used that information to file fraudulent tax returns. Authorities say St. Fleur filed 182 phony tax returns that requested more than $500,000 in refunds.

In addition to the prison time, St. Fleur must forfeit more than $61,000 that was traced to the scheme.

BIKERNET TRAVELS TO KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA

Got here yesterday Monday from Bkk. About a two hour plane ride.

Her are a few random shots from a walk around today.

The air quality is pretty bad today getting like Beijing. In fact most of SE Asia has poor air quality the year round. The sun was blocked so the good news is the temps are down.

This is my hotel street and used to be somewhat downtrodden.

Recently the trendy places started opening and is now quite vibrant at nite. Route 66 bar specialists in American style burgers maybe tonite. It’s quite ok as Malaysian food is one of of my least favorite. There is even a pork only rest here in the middle of non pork diets cuisine.

Jalandhar means street. Alor is famous for night street dining at dozens of Chinese restaurants mostly seafood and not inexpensive. Colorful lighting

K. L. Has had this monorail for many years and was old when I first came here in 2007. It runs quite extensively through the city center. Why can’t we have one. Bkk has a great one built about 2000 called BTS Skytrain and is quite successful. Of course Disneyland has had one even longer

GRIMES FACES 220 MILE-AN-HOUR ‘SHARK ATTACK’ AT ROCKINGHAM–ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – If he is to repeat as Top Fuel champion at this week’s 23rd annual Jim McClure All-Harley Nitro Nationals at Rockingham Dragway, American Motorcycle Racing Association (AMRA) world record-holder Tommy Grimes may have to stave off a “Shark” attack.

Texan Ricky House, the man rivals call “Sharkey,” is the biggest threat to another Grimes’ victory astride the fuel burning hybrid of Harley Hall-of-Famer Ray Price of Raleigh. House, a resident of Humble, Texas, is trying to overtake an idle Randal Andras of Amelia, Louisiana, for the No. 1 spot in AMRA points.

To do so, he’ll have to deal with Grimes, the Clemmons, North Carolina veteran who set AMRA records in his last two appearances at The Rock. He lowered the elapsed time standard to 6.197 seconds last fall and, last spring, raised his own speed record to 227.27 miles per hour.

Among the others battling for AMRA points in the featured category will be Larry Stanley of Norton, and Ohio, Joey Sternotti of West Blackwood, New Jersey, among others.

In addition to Top Fuel, Sunday’s eliminations also will crown champions in Funny Bike, Pro Fuel, Pro Gas, Pro Modified, Pro Stock and a host of other Harley-exclusive categories.

The battle in Pro Fuel may be the most interesting of all. It features reigning NMRA champion Dale Nilles of Wilkesboro, N.C., who became the first Harley winner in the MIRock Superbike Series when he won the 4.70 class at Rockingham in August, will try to hold on against Rocky Jackson of Youngsville, Louisiana, Rebel Glover of Holly Hill, Florida, and Hawaya Racing owner Johnny Vickers of Millers Creek, N.C.

In Funny Bike, Jim Doyle of Springfield, Massachusetts will try to wrestle the No. 1 plate away from veteran Jake Stordeur of Delaware, Ohio, who won the class in the spring.

After a full day of testing on Friday, pro qualifying will highlight Saturday’s show starting at 10 a.m. A free concert will follow qualifying on Saturday night. Gates open Sunday at 8 a.m. with eliminations beginning at 11 a.m.

Adult admission to the race named for the late Jim “Da Judge” McClure, one of the legends of Top Fuel bike racing, is $20 per day; $35 for a two-day ticket or $45 for all three days. Children under twelve are free when accompanied by a ticketed adult and, as always, discounts apply for active military personnel and parking is free in Rockingham’s main lot.

The laws were re-introduced and updated in 2012 following a wave of gun violence involving bikers and organized crime groups.

National president of the Nomads, Simon Tajjour, who was one of the first arrested under the laws, launched the High Court challenge along with fellow biker Justin Hawthorne.

Intellectually disabled youth Charlie Forster, convicted of consorting with known petty criminals in the small town of Inverell, was also part of the High Court challenge.

The men argued the laws infringed the implied right to freedom of association in the Constitution and were inconsistent with Australia’s international obligations.

However, six of the seven High Court judges today ruled the laws were valid and there was no right to freedom of association.

The judges also found that although the laws restricted freedom of political communication, they were an appropriate measure to prevent crime.

Only High Court Chief Justice Robert French believed the law was invalid because it unreasonably burdened the freedom of political communication and was incompatible with Australia’s system of representative government. This was because the law was so broad it could potentially prevent legitimate activities, such as a person meeting with ex-prisoners to discuss law reform.

The High Court unanimously ruled the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, where not incorporated into commonwealth legislation, imposed no constraint on state governments to make laws that were inconsistent with it.

NSW Attorney-General Brad Hazzard today welcomed the decision, saying the laws gave police the powers they needed to disrupt and dismantle criminal organizations, including motorcycle clubs.

“It is not surprising that criminals don’t like the laws and wanted them overturned, but today’s decision in the High Court ensures they are here to stay,” he said.

The laws carry a maximum penalty of three years in jail for people who repeatedly consort with convicted offenders after being warned by police.

The laws were originally introduced in the 1920s to tackle Sydney’s ‘razor gangs’ but were later scaled back because of concerns police were abusing their powers.

The case is the latest in a string of High Court battles between bikers and state governments.

The High Court is also due to rule on whether Queensland’s draconian anti-biker legislation is valid.

A lawyer involved in both cases says the decision won’t affect the Queensland case

Mr Forster’s barrister Wayne Baffsky is also involved in a challenge to Queensland’s anti-biker legislation, which among other measures bans more than two club members meeting in public.

Mr Baffsky says whilst Wednesday’s judgment is disappointing, he’s still hopeful Queensland laws will be declared invalid.

“I haven’t seen anything really in here (Wednesday’s judgment) that will affect the Queensland appeal in any detrimental way,” said Mr Baffsky .

“They’re very different arguments and very different pieces of legislation which are being appealed in Queensland.”

Mr Baffsky said Wednesday’s outcome highlighted the need for a bill of rights to protect Australians’ freedoms.

“We don’t have any rights, any established rights, in Australia at the moment,” Mr Baffsky said.

“We need a document to set out what rights we have to prevent governments from infringing on those rights.”

CYCLE SOURCE LAS VEGAS BIKE FEST ARTISTRY IN IRON–This is an annual invitation-only display of the finest custom motorcycles on the planet. This year was bigger than ever, but an element was missing, the editor’s choice aspect. We tried to divide up the bikes, so every publication and every builder received a feature.

This was Chris Callen’s effort to help builders receive the recognition they deserve, but trying to pull all the magazines together became an issue. All these bikes were shot for the show by our own Bagger co-editor, Jack, “the Shipper” MacIntyre.

Here are some teaser shots. We will work with Chris to help feature some of these bikes. I know we already have a feature of Caleb’s Shovelhead.

MOTORCYCLE CHECKPOINTS UNDER ATTACK–Let’s See Some ID…And Can I Search Your Vehicle?

There’s been a lot of discussion lately about motorcycle only checkpoints, DUI checkpoints, intimidation by the TSA and questionable border security checkpoints that are nowhere near a border.

Americans citizens are protected from unreasonable search and seizure under the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution. But there has been a continued encroachment and reinterpretation of Fourth Amendment protections, especially at checkpoints and during traffic stops. So exactly what are your rights and how can you invoke them?

All of this and more was recently covered in an article by Tony Sanfelipo of the law offices of Michael Hupy, yesterday on Bikernet. Check it out:

BIKERNET INDIAN PROJECT BIKE—While in Vegas I checked out the Indian Motorcycle display with a special eye on paint schemes. I noticed several new models with Indian red and crème two-tones. That scratched that notion! I was intrigued by the pastel green and crème paint scheme, but it also is a stock configuration. Although, when I went to the Indian site I couldn’t find it. Here’s what Rich Worley had to say, from American Biker:

I like the green also. I think that would look great with a patina paint job. Do you want to do the stock Willow green?

I also wanted to kind of lay out the few segments of this whole deal to give us an idea of the process. Here is what I was thinking

1. PAINT

a. Removal of the stock parts to be sent to paint
b. Me changing the lines of the stock rear fender
c. Article of Rusty Nash (painter) and his shop. Also the process of doing a Patina paint job (this could be its own feature)

2. Handlebars

a. Process of cutting the stock bars and using the parts to weld to other bars to make desired shape.
b. Running stock wires and cables back into place

3. PAUL’S PARTS / S&S PARTS

a. Doing an article about installing his stuff or any other aftermarket parts including new D&D slip-ons.

4. RIDE ACROSS COUNTRY TO DELIVER BIKE

a. The ride
b. Stopping at Indian factory
c. IMS show
d. Other dealerships

This is just a layout to give me an idea of how we can keep a schedule and space out the 4 different topics. Please feel fee to add or take away from this. I just needed to put something down on paper.

P.S. Some of your parts from S&S showed up yesterday

Talk soon, Rich

FIGHT LIKE A GIRL FROM MUSTANG SEATS!Mustang Brings Back Breast Cancer Awareness Limited Edition Seats.

Mustang Seats, LLC continues to fight for a cause that hits close to home for members of the company’s extended family — breast cancer. The new “Fight Like A Girl” limited edition pink seats commemorating National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a continuation of last year’s successful “Comfort For A Cause” campaign that saw a portion of the proceeds for every pink seat sold go directly to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s efforts to find a cure.

Mustang is continuing to help bikers “think pink.” Mustang marketing director Marilyn Simmons explains, “Last year, Mustang introduced our Breast Cancer Awareness custom seat program, which offered pink thread and pink vinyl seat inserts or pink vinyl ribbon appliqués on seats or accessories.” Mustang is upping the game this year. “For October 2014, Mustang is now proud to introduce your choice of custom pink stitched embroidery for Breast Cancer Awareness month.”

Mustang will add custom pink embroidered ribbons, phrases, tributes, memorials or initials on the seat of your choice for the duration of their new “Fight Like A Girl!” campaign. Please note that the location may vary from the seat shown; not all seats or accessories can be customized. (A full custom embroidery program offering a variety of colors and images will be available soon from Mustang after the pink pilot program wraps up.)

Like last year, Mustang will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for each “Fight Like A Girl” or other pink custom embroidered seat purchased from now through 12/31/14. BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL OPEN--In ancient Greece (469 – 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom.

One day an acquaintance ran up to him excitedly and said,

“Socrates, do you know what I just heard about Diogenes?”

“Wait a moment,” Socrates replied, “Before you tell me I’d like you to pass a little test. It’s called the Triple Filter Test.”

‘Triple filter?” asked the acquaintance.

“That’s right,” Socrates continued, “Before you talk to me about Diogenes let’s take a moment to filter what you’re going to say. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?”

“No,” the man said, “Actually I just heard about it.”

“All right,” said Socrates, “So you don’t really know if it’s true or not. Now let’s try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about Diogenes something good?”

“No, on the contrary…”

“So,” Socrates continued, “You want to tell me something about Diogenes that may be bad, even though you’re not certain it’s true?”

The man shrugged, a little embarrassed.

Socrates continued, “You may still pass the test though, because there is a third filter, the filter of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about Diogenes going to be useful to me?”

“No, not really.”

“Well,” concluded Socrates, “If what you want to tell me is neither True nor Good nor even useful, why tell it to me or anyone at all?”

The man was bewildered and ashamed.

This is an example of why Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.

……………………

It also explains why Socrates never found out that Diogenes was banging his wife…

CUSTOM SEAT PROCEDURE FROM SADDLEMEN–Custom seats mean many different things to different people and as a manufacturer with four decades of seat building experience, Saddlemen can create a special seat with a combination of features to match any riders needs or dreams. Building custom seats from scratch, modifying factory stock original seats or redesigning one of our own off the shelf customs are all in a days work for Saddlemen technicians and craftsman.

Our technicians have years of experience in seat design, customization and refurbishing, and whether in an all-new seat made from scratch, or providing subtle tailoring, recovering or reshaping of an existing stock seat, Saddlemen professionals have helped riders with almost every bike type improve the comfort, utility and appearance of their machines’ seats.

Customization

There are many levels and types of customization available. A seat can change appearance or style, riding position, height and comfort – the look and feel of a bike in general. Seats can be fine tuned for rider sizes and and how the bike is ridden. When a custom seat is created, additional features, such as beackreats, gel channel or luggage tie down points, can be added at the same time.

Following are a list of custom features that Saddlemen can consider:

Comfort – the number one reason for ordering a custom seat.
  • Reshape contours to relieve pressure points and improve seating position.
  • Install softer or harder foam to provide better cushioning and support.
  • Install Saddlegel to absorb shock and vibration and spread pressure over maximum area.
  • Slight changes in width can make moving around on bike easier, improve control.
  • Slimmer nose contours make it easier to reach the ground because the legs are closer together and not spread apart.

Gel Installation – One of our most popular types of customization we offer is the installation of SaddleGel™ padding into seats. Gel installs offer the signature benefit of Saddlemen seats for those who wish or need to keep their original seat.

Style – many different looks can be created through the appropriate use of

  • Stitching
  • Patterns
  • Embroidery
  • Stitch colors
Seating surfaces / panels are available in leathers, exotic skins, suedes, flexible sythetics and fabrics, each with a different look and feel.

Seating panels and sides are available in multiple textures, grain patterns and grippiness.

Cover colors:

  • Foam contours and configuration
  • Solo
  • Two up
  • Slammed
  • Plush
  • King and queen
  • Size or height

Seat Heater – very popular in luxury cars, heated seating is now available for all your original saddle or any Saddlemen custom.

Riding postion and ergonmetrics:

Height – sit higher or lower on the bike, improving how feet and hands fit bars, pegs and controls.

  • Seat width, especially at the nose affect how the legs spread and reach the ground.
  • Angle or slope of seat platforms can prevent sliding forward or back during acceleration or braking.
  • Traction – makes it easier to move side to side, front to back (more slick) or increase traction to assist the rider from sliding (more sticky).

Features – additional features such as adding a driver backrest, gel channel or luggage tie down anchors can be added.

Position / Shape

  • Contours or “bumps” to prevent sliding or to make seat more aerodynamic.
  • Move closer or further away from bars and controls.

Hardness – softer or harder foam compounds affect comfort and control.

Custom – if you can think of it, Saddlemen can probably do it.

Refurbishing – seats grow old, worn and torn. The ravages of sun and weather dry out and oxidize covers until thy fade or crack. Rough use or tools mistakenly left in pockets can tear covers. Dogs and other animals can eat of scratch covers and foam. Years of highway use adds high mileage and compressed forms. Whatever the reason, Saddlemen can restore a seat to better than new condition.

Potential buyers with concerns about comfort, seating position and styling can contact our knowledgeable sales staff at our California offices and factory. A brief conversation can answer many questions, and provide a basis for creating a seat for the best ride possible. We can also discuss all of the available options for cover materials, stitching and ornamentation.

To order or for consultation, our experienced Sales Department representatives can be reached from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM Pacific time Monday to Friday at (800) 397-7709.

THERE IT IS THEN—Just about the time we see the light at the end of the tunnel, the scramble starts again. Dar, from Brass Balls called and he’s delivering his Hot Bike entry to a Hollywood celeb this weekend and wants to stop by.

We are headed out to the Flat Track Finals in Pomona. Then Terry the Tramp called and he is rebuilding an EVO engine with S&S products and One-eyed Tom modified heads. We are all over Evos and making them run forever. We will bring you the tech.

I was asked to write a forward for Wanda Hummel, a freedom fighter for life. She is putting a book together on motorcycle rights efforts in her state, with ABATE of Indiana.

Then we may have a group in town for the Love Ride and we will display the Bonne Bell at the Schuberth Helmet Booth. Plus, I’m putting myself in debt with repairs and upgrades to the building. Good god, we are powder coating rusting patio chairs 5-Ball Orange, having the electrical box out front wrapped with vinyl. And Ramon is coming over on Monday to lay brick over the Performance editor’s new concrete steps.

Holy shit. I need to stop spending money and hide out for awhile.

Have a helluva weekend.

Ride Free Forever,

–Bandit
