This is a strange one. We now have a seat for our Salt Torpedo and a 5-point belt system, as required by the Salt Gods. Racing shit is flying.
I’m also standing on the street corner to beg for alms so we can paint a Wilmington, Port of Los Angeles, and Bikernet Mural on the side of our Interplanetary Headquarters. I want to donate a 130 by 25 foot wall to the community, and I struggle for takers. Seems they want Wilmington to remain a tiny third world ghetto between Long Beach and San Pedro. We keep up the good fight.
We are trying to find a used Ninja engine for our racer’s blown up bike. We are scrambling on an original Wheeler Work Station, which we are donating to the Sturgis Museum, while finishing the new model. Hang on for reports.
I just made my SmokeOut flights. I’m flying into Charleston and riding my Indian to the SmokeOut, then flying out of Charlotte. Finding flights was interesting. I stuck with Delta. Rich Worley, from American Biker is scrambling to help me with the Barnett Clutch Install. Then we will bring you the tech next week, hopefully. He’s had a tough year as he hobbles around the shop with a broken foot.

He visits the Doctor once a year for his check-up and again during the year, if any medical needs arise. For this he pays nothing, and nothing is required of him.
He lives in a nice neighborhood in a house that is much larger than he needs, but he is not required to do any upkeep. If he makes a mess, someone else cleans it up. He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep. He receives these accommodations absolutely free.

GUN NUT REPORT, Guns vs. Cars Comparison is No Accident– In the Art of War, Chinese military theoretician Sun Tzu advised, “appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak.”
Since gun control supporters are trying to make guns look bad by comparing the number of gun-related deaths to those due to motor vehicle accidents, they’re apparently applying the second part of Sun Tzu’s advice.
To feign strength, gun control supporters have been pedal-to-the-metal on the subject over time. The Violence Policy Center compared gun-related and vehicle accident deaths in 2011. Michael Bloomberg’s news machine did so in 2012. Mother Jones, the publication once edited by Michael Moore, if that tells you anything, did so in 2013. Last year, the Center for American Progress asserted that “gun deaths are on track to surpass motor vehicle traffic deaths for [people under age 25].” And this year, the ideologically comparable Atlantic repeated that assertion in a hit piece that referred to guns as “America’s Top Killing Machine.”
The anti-gunners also have the “weak” part of Sun Tzu’s strategy down to a “T.” Chelsea Parsons, of the “Progress” group, says that their guns-vs.-cars propaganda “really resonates with people.” But resonates with whom? As AWR Hawkins reports, “[t]he Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) final report on death statistics for 2013 shows there were 35,369 deaths from motor vehicle accidents versus 505 deaths from the accidental discharge of firearms. . . . Americans are 70 times more likely to die in a vehicle accident than by the accidental discharge of a firearm.”
Just as lacking in resonance is the anti-gunners’ theory that government regulation reduced deaths involving vehicles, so the same ought to be true for those involving firearms. From 1981 through 2013 (the first and last year of data reported by the federal government), deaths due to accidents involving “unregulated” firearms decreased 73 percent, while those due to accidents involving highly-regulated motor vehicles decreased only 31 percent. And, two-thirds of the decline in motor vehicle accident deaths has occurred during the last six years, a half-century after Congress imposed the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, authorizing the federal government to dictate how cars should be manufactured and roads should be constructed.
What’s really resonating with the American people, is that gun control supporters–wrong about handguns, wrong about the Second Amendment, wrong about Right-to-Carry, wrong about semi-automatic rifles, wrong about ammunition magazines, wrong about ammunition, and the list goes on–aren’t hitting on all cylinders.
The only way that the number of gun-related deaths compares to the number of vehicle accident deaths, is if vehicle accident deaths are compared to the grand total of suicides, murders, defensive homicides by private citizens, legal intervention homicides by law enforcement officers, and the relatively smaller number of firearm accident deaths. And that math is as slippery as a garage floor mopped with 10W-30.

Final Chapter 50, No Fear
When we realize that afflictions are no other than enlightenment,
we can ride the waves of birth and death in peace,
traveling in the boat of compassion on the ocean of delusion,
smiling the smile of non-fear.
The final verse of the Fifty Verses describes the bodhisattva, an enlightened being who instead of entering nirvana and leaving behind the cycle of suffering, chooses to stay in the world of birth and death to help others. Bodhisattvas dwell on the same ground as the rest of us–the world of birth and death, permanence, and self. But thanks to the practice of looking deeply into impermanence and nonself, they are in touch with the ultimate dimension, free from the fears associated with ideas of existence and nonexistence, one and many, coming and going, birth and death. In this freedom, they ride the waves of birth and death in perfect peace. They are able to remain in the world of waves while abiding in the nature of water.
“Riding the waves of birth and death” is a description of the bodhisattvas in the Lotus Sutra–Avalokiteshvara, Samantabhadra, Bhaishajyaraja, and Gadgadasvara–who demonstrate the practice in this life. This is the dimension of action. In a world of pain and grief, these bodhisattvas are still able to smile with compassion and fearlessness, because they are able to see the nonduality of afflictions and awakening and touch the reality of nirvana.
Buddhist texts speak of three kinds of gifts–material resources, sharing the Dharma with others, and non-fear, which is the greatest gift. Because bodhisattvas are free from fear, they can help many people. Non-fear is the greatest gift we can offer to those we love. Nothing is more precious. But we cannot offer that gift unless we ourselves have it. If we have practiced and have touched the ultimate dimension of reality, we too can smile the bodhisattvas’ smile of non-fear. Like them, we don’t need to run away from our afflictions. We don’t need to go somewhere else to attain enlightenment. We see that afflictions and enlightenment are one. When we have a deluded mind, we see only afflictions. But when we have a true mind, the afflictions are no longer there. There is only enlightenment. We are no longer afraid of birth and death because we have touched the nature of interbeing.
Those who work with the dying especially need to practice solidity and non-fear. Others need our stability and non-fear in order to be able to die peacefully. If we know how to touch the ultimate dimension of reality, if we know the reality of no birth and no death, we can transcend all fear. Then, when we are sitting with a dying person, we can be a source of comfort and inspiration to them. Non-fear is the greatest practice in Buddhism. To free ourselves from all fear we must touch the ground of our being and train ourselves to look directly into the light of compassion.
The Heart Sutra describes how the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, because he is able to look deeply into the nonself nature of the Five Aggregates, discovers the nature of emptiness and immediately overcomes all afflictions. From this he receives the energy of non-fear, which is why he is able to help so many others. Once we have seen that our afflictions are no other than enlightenment, we too can ride joyfully on the waves of birth and death.
A gardener does not chase after flowers and try to run away from garbage. She accepts both, and she takes good care of both. She is not attached to either nor does she reject either, because she sees that the nature of both is interbeing. She has made peace with the flower and the garbage. A bodhisattva handles enlightenment and afflictions in the same way a skillful gardener handles flowers and garbage–without discrimination. She knows how to do the work of transformation, and so she is no longer afraid. This is the attitude of a Buddha.

ABOUT THE TRIKES
Drift trikes are basically big wheels like we had as kids. However, these have engines because most of us don’t have the endless energy of a six year old. Sections of PVC plastic are slid over the tire and then the tires are inflated, which allows the bikes to slide through the corners on the hard plastic.
I think these things will be a blast to watch.
It’s one more exciting, fun thing to watch. We have all kinds of people at the Smoke Out that just love to use hacksaws and welders so this could be crazy.

Depending on the amount of people that get involved we will either run heats with three racers or fastest lap. It can get a lil’ hairy with any more riders on the track.

As the national ice taskforce begins its community consultations, one criminology expert is questioning whether Australia is running the risk of having too many inquiries into ice …reports KIM LANDERS from the ABC’s World Today
Dr Terry Goldsworthy is an Assistant Professor of Criminology at the Bond University on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
He also spent nearly three decades as a police officer and when I spoke to him earlier, I began by asking, where is the ice in Australia coming from?
TERRY GOLDSWORTHY: Look, that’s a great question Kim and if I had a crystal ball or law enforcement did it would be great to get the answer for it.
But look, I mean, some of the interceptions that are occurring are, you know, Asia and in particular China seems to playing a fairly prominent role as being the embarkation points for some of the large interceptions we’ve seen going back to the last financial year.
So we’ve also had Thailand has featured there as well.
So I think if you’re talking about ice, more of that is coming from overseas, that’s just some of the trend that actually got picked up from the Australian Crime Commission report and the reason that I think that may be occurring is because we’re getting larger interceptions of the actual finished product at our borders, we’re getting reduced amounts of precursors getting incepted, and we’ve also had a reduction in the amount of clandestine labs being detected by law enforcement authorities in Australia.
KIM LANDERS: And who’s behind these importations? There’s often a lot of speculation that its outlaw motorcycle clubs? Is that right or is that a skewed version?
TERRY GOLDSWORTHY: Look, I think the bikers are really a good target because they’re so obvious.
They’re certainly involved in the ice trade, there’s no doubt of that.
We’ve seen anecdotal evidence of that. Victoria has certainly put that forward for some of their problems in their rural centres, gangs involved but it looks like low level dealing etc, but to my mind if you look at some of these big takeouts they do for the drugs coming from overseas, you don’t see bikers feature prominently there.
So I think they are a player in the market but there are other gangs operating there. You know, you have the Columbian cartels, the Mexican crime cartels, gangs from Eastern Europe etc.
They’re all players in a viable market and it’s not exclusive territory for the bikers by any means.

The grandparents of Scotty Duebler, the GNC announcer, were in a head on collision near Palm Springs last week. The lady that swerved in front of them died. Dan has a broken femur along with other injuries and may be facing another surgery, Kathy is back in ICU with an infection and water throughout her tissues. She also has a broken femur, wrist and internal injuries. They are both avid race fans and supporters. Dan raced until he was about 81. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

In conjunction with the crowd funding campaign for its new film I AM STURGIS, the filmmakers are offering free on-line screening of Why We Ride for 7 days in hopes of galvanizing viewers to donate on any level to their Kickstarter campaign. Upon its initial release, Why We Ride generated intense interest and soon became the most critically acclaimed motorcycle movie of all time. With time running out on the current campaign, the filmmakers hope to channel some of that energy and enthusiasm toward their new project.

LATUS MOTORS RACING TEAM HEADS TO VIRGINIA INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY WITH A HEALTHY BOBBY FONG–
The Latus Motors Racing team and rider Bobby Fong put the month-long break since the last 2015 MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Racing Championship round at Road Atlanta to good use. Fong expects to be in good riding health for this weekend’s race at the Virginia International Raceway in Danville, Virginia, May 15 – 17.
Fong, riding the #50 Latus Motors Racing / Castrol / Triumph Daytona 675R, was forced to sit out all of the races at last month’s Road Atlanta round from a lingering shoulder injury. The injury was from the season opening Circuit Of The Americas race where he fell while in second place in the closing laps. After a month of physical therapy and training, Fong is confident that he’s ready to compete for the win again.
“It was a disappointing and tough decision to sit out of the Road Atlanta races, but I’m ready to charge hard at VIR,” said Bobby Fong. “The Latus Motors Racing team has shown they can run up front, and I’m excited to give the fans what they want, a Triumph on the podium.”
The Latus Motors Racing team is proud to announce the hiring of injured warfighter Sgt. Chad C. onto its team as a crew member for the entire MotoAmerica season. Through Castrol’s VETMotorsports Performance Match Fund, this will earn VETMotorsports a $250 bonus per weekend with the possibility for more bonuses through the team’s on-track performance.
The MotoAmerica Supersport races will be held on Saturday, May 16 at 1:00pm EDT and Sunday, May 17 at 1:30pm EDT. LUCAS OIL’S Hector Arana Jr. takes fastest motorcycle in NHRA history to Atlanta–
Lucas Oil Buell rider Hector Arana Jr. is ready for the Pro Stock Motorcycle class to resume racing, and for good reason: He has the fastest motorcycle in NHRA history.
Arana Jr. set the national speed record of 198.88 mph on March 29 at the last race that included the two-wheel category in Charlotte, and he’ll finally roll his Lucas Oil Buell back to the starting line this weekend at the 35th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.
A nine-time winner on the NHRA tour, Arana Jr. has two of the top three fastest runs in class history. He was hoping to be the first to 200 mph — the sport’s next big barrier — when he switched to new body work at the start of the year, but the development of the new design isn’t complete. Until then, of course, he knows he still has a very fast bike.
“We’re taking old faithful to Atlanta, the body I’ve been running, and racing it until the new one is totally figured out,” Arana Jr. said. “We’re just not ready to bring out the new body work yet. We’ve got some more work to do, not so much for performance but for safety. When that body takes me down the track straight, that’s when we’ll bring it out.”
Arana Jr. sits fifth in the Pro Stock Motorcycle points standings after only two races, highlighted by a final round showing in Charlotte. That race was more than a month ago, and Arana Jr. is itching to get back on track.
“Our bikes are running well right now,” said Arana Jr., who shares a pit with his father Hector Sr., who also races. “I’m ready to get things rolling. I’m tired of these big gaps in the schedule. I’m ready to do a bunch of races in a row and get back in the swing of things.
“It’s tricky. These motors, you can only get so many runs out of them. It’s hard to find parts that last a long time, so when you get a motor that’s good, like one that sets the national record, you don’t want to abuse it in testing, you want to use it just for racing.”
And Arana Jr. wants to stay sharp on the bike, too.
“When you’re in competition, that’s when you get used to racing and you get used to the tension,” Arana Jr. said. “When it’s testing, you can go cut perfect lights all day because you don’t have the pressure. I’m ready to feel that pressure and start winning some races.”
Qualifying rounds will take place at 3:45 and 6:15 p.m., Friday, and 12:45 and 2:45 p.m., Saturday. Eliminations start at noon, Sunday. ESPN2 will carry all the action.

UNCLE MONKEY ON FULL FACE HELMETS–
I’ve always preferred riding without a helmet. The freedom, the wind, the sun against my face as I race across the countryside cannot be beat. Unfortunately other than on my way to Sturgis the Man says I have to wear a helmet.
I’ve gotten by wearing beanies and short helmets as a compromise but as the years have gone on the buffering on my ears have gotten worse. Even short rides would leave my ears ringing for long periods of time. I’ve tried countering it with a combination of earplugs, bandanas, goggle straps and anything else I could use to help protect them. It didn’t always work not to mention the time consuming ritual of layering on the different things when everyone else is ready to ride.
I had been threatening to buy myself a full-face helmet for a while but this spring I finally pulled the trigger on one. It is a big relief. There is still a fair amount of wind noise that I will be able to further filter out but it is a welcome change from the overwhelming ringing that was limiting what I could hear when we stop.

With the recent string of videos from bystanders showing police encounters with citizens, some of them deadly, there has been a push to equip police with body cameras in order to record all interactions between police and the public. Some say it will help change the behavior of both police and citizens, because both sides will know the activity is being recorded.
But are body cameras really the solution to an escalating problem of violence during these encounters? Rules about when to turn on a body camera vary from department to department and from state to state. Even if a body camera captures an incident, the majority of police chiefs surveyed by the Police Executive Research Forum said they support allowing police officers to review videos before making any official statements. Some argue that this policy affords the police an opportunity to put a “spin” on the occurrence that certainly would favor the police.
Another problem is there is no nationwide policy on when a camera should be turned on. Running the cameras continuously would be a waste of storage space and battery life. Cameras would spend a lot of time being recharged during any shift. But with no written directives on when to turn a camera on, officers could be selective in what and when they choose to record. A general consensus is to activate the cameras whenever responding to an emergency call or possible criminal activity. Officers could turn cameras off when arriving if they decide a recording is not necessary, but they would have to explain their reasons in a written report or on the recording before turning the camera off.

HOLY MOTHER OF THE CHROMED DONKEY DICK TAILLIGHTS— What a week. I don’t know about you, but I’m scrambling from one project to another and constantly searching for the next adventure and a way to slow down.
My new bookkeeper says it’s all about, “Learning boundaries.” It’s a tough one, but I’m working on it. I almost bought a ’54 Olds last week, then stopped myself. Okay, I’m trying to write a Life and Times and cover some of life’s recent challenges. I started it at midnight the other night, but I’ll get back to it.
Carl Morrow stepped up to help with our Bonneville effort with one of his magnificent Typhoon carbs for our streamlined trike. I’ve been after them to write a story about this billet masterpiece, but had a tough time pinning them down. The late Richard Kranzler was kind enough to find an article I wrote in about ’94 when the Typhoon was new. We are going to augment and update the story in the next couple of days, with new shots.
I’m working on a cool Triumph feature, and the content keeps flying at Bikernet. Have a terrific weekend, and let us know if we’re missing anything. Derrel is on his way to Half Moon Bay to cover the vintage auction. A report is headed your way on our Bonneville efforts, the 2014 Indian, and our Paughco build. Never a dull moment.
