This week was packed with major accomplishments on all fronts, and it’s not over yet.
I believe we made major strides on our building. We now have a Certificate of Occupancy in the works. I refined the breather on my bottlecap engine, replaced the plugs and ordered a new headlight sealed beam. Another test this weekend.

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION: SEEKING SPECIAL PROTECTION FOR NOISE VIOLATORS
Noise Free America: A Coalition to Promote Quiet
Chapel Hill: The Motorcycle Riders Foundation [2] (MRF) has won this
month’s Noisy Dozen award [3] from Noise Free America: A Coalition to
Promote Quiet [4] for their “Bikers on the Beltway” federal lobbing event in Washington, DC on May 12, 2016. The bikers’ objective: lobbying Congress to support the “End Motorcycle Profiling Act of 2016.” This bill is truly a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
State motorcycle rights organizations have successfully duped a couple of state legislatures into enacting anti-motorcycle profiling laws. Now the bikers want a national standard.
Larry Deal, a Noise Free America member, commented that the Motorcycle Riders Foundation “wants a federal anti-motorcycle profiling law which would confer bikers with protected class status.
It would provide them with a federal civil lawsuit provision to help them stop the police from enforcing laws they wish to get away with violating. The MRF [5] deems law enforcement which targets motorcycle riders as illegal ‘profiling’ and ‘a matter of civil liberties.’ That is a load of hooey and Congress should know better than to buy into it!”
The bikers are roaming the halls of Congress in packs to hoodwink their members of Congress into enacting a so-called “Bikers’ Civil Rights Act.” They are delivering their talking points to get Congress to kowtow to their desires.
Deal stated, “I wonder if there will be any opposition to the MRF’s proposed ‘keep the big bad law enforcement wolf away from bikers’ bill and if those federal legislators will hear from those who know what the MRF is really up to? Or will the opposition remain silent and let a completely dishonest, highly deceptive piece of legislation take center stage? The MRF’s horrendous bill is aimed at protecting law-breaking bikers from being held accountable to the rule of law.”
Ted Rueter, director of Noise Free America: A Coalition to Promote Quiet, commented that “motorcycle riders are not shy about asking for special favors from Congress and state legislatures, but Congress should not grant them this favor. The vast majority of motorcycle riders modify or remove their exhaust system–in direct violation of the federal Noise Control Act of 1972.”
Noise Free America is a national citizens’ organization opposed to noise pollution. Past “winners” of the Noisy Dozen award include the Massachusetts Motorcycle Association [6], the West Houston Reguladores Motorcycle Club [7], and the Pennsylvania Harley Owners Group [8].

preferences of monkeys and chimpanzees; the $1.1 million judging whether cheerleaders are more attractive seen as a squad than individually; the $390,000 to determine how many shakes a wet dog needs to feel dry; and the $5 million to learn whether drunk birds slur when they sing.
(Also strangely included was the actually- valuable study by Michael Smith of Cornell University ranking where on the human body a bee sting was most painful. He found, from personal testing, that “on the penis” was only the third-worst–research that brought Smith a prestigious Ig Nobel prize last year.)

THE AUTO-PILOT DISCUSSION– Humans like efficiency and we are always looking for ways to multitask so that we maximize our time to the highest efficiency. Some of us are to the point where we want to take the human out of the equation entirely.
When we were children, we dreamed of driving flying cars but probably never thought of sitting as a faceless passenger in a driverless car. What for? So we can be more efficient and safe? Even in the craziest of sci-fi films, you rarely see a car chase with a driverless car. You know why?—because it’s boring. Because the cold efficiency of driverless cars will never provide the excitement of cruising down the road in control of your own destiny!
Airplanes have autopilot and pilots rely greatly on autopilot once they are enroute. But pilots are already starting to have some of the problems that motorists will have after connected/driverless cars become the norm. NMA member Greg Amy, a pilot, recently wrote this observation to the NMA in an email:
“Automated systems take the driver/pilot out of the loop, out of the *mindset* of operating the vehicle, all while expecting – requiring – that the pilot stay in the loop. Humans don’t work that way, neither amateurs nor trained professionals. We cannot – will not – maintain skills and situational awareness when we are not forced to; witness ease of loss of situational awareness while texting/talking on the phone. When things are going well, the systems are remarkable. But when a failure happens, it happens worse.”
One of the most tragic examples of machine/human failure in modern history is the Air France 447 crash in 2009.
In another email, NMA director Eric Berg, also referenced this Vanity Fair article about the Air France Crash 447.
“The 2009 Air France Crash 447 is a perfect example of pilots becoming too unskilled because of the automaticity of Airbuses in general. The autopilot disconnected because of contradictory air speed information coming from a malfunctioning pilot system. The pilots were unable to figure out how to recover from the stall that followed.”
The author of the Vanity Fair article is William Langewiesche, a well-known author/pilot and son of Wolfgang Langewiesche who himself wrote “Stick and Rudder”, the legendary book on the art of manually flying fixed-wing airplanes. His quote on airplane automation seems like a cautionary statement for motorists.
“It seems that we are locked into a spiral in which poor human performance begets automation, which worsens human performance, which begets increasing automation. The pattern is common to our time but is acute in aviation. Air France 447 was a case in point.
In the aftermath of the accident, [many changes in systems were made]. All of this was fine, but none of it will make much difference. At a time when accidents are extremely rare, each one becomes a one-off event, unlikely to be repeated in detail.
Next time it will be some other airline, some other culture, and some other failure—but it will almost certainly involve automation and will perplex us when it occurs. Over time the automation will expand to handle in-flight failures and emergencies, and as the safety record improves, pilots will gradually be squeezed from the cockpit altogether. The dynamic has become inevitable. There will still be accidents, but at some point we will have only the machines to blame.”
What makes us human is our need to be in control, to take risks and enjoy life on our own terms. We shouldn’t let the minority of people who believe that safety is all that matters to take over our lives by mandating connected and driverless cars for all.

THE AUSTRALIAN CLUB REPORT–“Stern words” for prospective members
Police in Australia’s most populous state NSW, have issued ‘stern words’ to any young people considering becoming involved with motorcycle clubs.
The warning came after the Toormina clubhouse of the Lone Wolf motorcycle club was raided by police in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The residences of two Lone Wolf members were also searched, resulting in a Toormina man, 19, being charged with illicit drug supply offences and alleged participation in a criminal group.
The motorcycle club – alleged by police to be involved with drug supply, standovers and violent crimes – is believed to be actively recruiting members in an attempt to boost ranks.
The Lone Wolf base at Hulberts Rd is said to be the last remaining clubhouse in Coffs Harbor, after police successfully closed down the clubhouses of the Rebels and Nomads.
There are five recognized clubs operating in the Coffs-Clarence region, including the Nomads, Rebels and Lone Wolf in Coffs Harbor, a merged group of Mongols and Finks in Woolgoolga and the Gladiators in Grafton.
Coffs-Clarence Local Area Command crime manager, Detective Inspector Darren Jameson, said police were determined to drive bikers out of the region for good.
“It’s time to send them a very, very clear message: outlaw motorcycle gangs are not welcome in Coffs Harbor,” Det Insp Jameson said.
“These people are not good citizens of this community.
“The commander has quoted previously that one fluffy toy ride a year does not make them good, quality citizens.
“For the other 364 days of the year, they are involved in criminal networks, criminal dealings and criminal offences.”
Det. Insp. Jameson guaranteed anyone who became involved with the groups criminal activity would be pursued.
“It may seem attractive at the start to be enticed into this world where drugs, cash and the other favors that come with that are ever-present, but your time will come,” he said.
“There will be an early morning knock at the door.
“You will have members of my office and this command, plus other specialist resources come into your home and you will be arrested.
“Give the game up now, find something constructive to do and move on with your lives.
“Stay away from biker gangs – they have no future in this community.”
Wow, I love it. The clubs won’t go away; in fact more will join because of these tyrants. And the raid a club and arrest 19 member and one had drugs. Must be a criminal organization. Hell, raid our Congress and see what you find. It’s a criminal organization for sure. –Bandit
BARTELS’ 13TH CHILI COOK-OFF ROCKS LINCOLN BLVD—Yes, on one of the busiest streets in Los Angeles the dealership threw their 13th annual Chili Cookoff and 5-Ball racing set up to compete with masters of the Chili realm.
The Redhead cooked killer traditional Chili, but did we win, oh hell no, but that’s cool. We had a blast, tasted lots of chili and saw old and young bros and babes.

MEANWHILE BACK IN AUSTRALIA– Anti-biker hysteria continues in Tasmania
Anti-biker hysteria in Tasmania, Australia’s island state, is continuing to be whipped up by local police, ably assisted by the compliant local media.
The latest “news” screams that a ‘vicious bikie gang’ from interstate is attempting to expand into Tasmania’s ‘reputed’ ice heartland with the possibility it’ll stir violence between rival clubs.
Tasmania Police claimed last week the Bandidos were attempting to establish themselves in the state.
Local and federal police recently swooped on three supposed full Bandidos members (now said to be just associates) at Devonport Airport, allegedly finding them with ice, cocaine and a stolen motorbike.
Police were forced to correct their initial hysteria regarding the three males’ status within the club:
“They are not considered fully patched Bandidos members but do display their allegiance to this gang,” Assistant Commissioner Glenn Frame said.
Former detective Terry Goldsworthy,now an assistant professor at Bond University, commenting on police claims, said any violence depended on what kind of ‘bikie’ landscape the Bandidos were rolling into .. if indeed setting up a presence was indeed their aim..
“Where are they moving into would be the question. Are they moving into areas that have been colonized by the clubs?’’ Dr Goldsworthy said.
“If they are moving into those areas there’d certainly be friction.”
According to Tasmania Police, there are more than 250 bikers and associates across five organized clubs – the Rebels, the Outlaws, the Black Uhlans, Satans Riders and Devils Henchmen. There are 16 clubhouses.
The three Bandidos associates arrested at the airport lived in the North-West of Tasmania, thus suggesting (to police) that is where the group intends on making its mark.
Police say that if that is the case, they will rub shoulders with three already established clubs – the Rebels,Outlaws and Black Uhlans.
Frame suggested drugs were the motivation for the Bandidos’ planned ‘incursion’.
“Outlaw motorcycle clubs are always trying to expand their criminal organization and use their business model to increase their profit from illegal activities,” he said.
“Australia’s profitable markets for illicit goods, in particular illicit drugs, drive OMCGs [outlaw motorcycle gangs] to these illegal activities.”
Dr Goldsworthy agreed a move to Tasmania was more likely to be criminal intent than a lifestyle change.
He said the clubs were not specifically embroiled in organised crime, it was select individuals within the group.
“They have a criminal element. Some of them don’t commit crime, they just go there for the image,” he said.

MORE FROM THE BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS– We just got this letter from the president of the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA):
I believe the BLM is overstepping their bounds here! The SCTA has organized land speed racing events on the Bonneville Salt Flats since 1949, long before the BLM came into existence, yet they are treating us like second rate citizens.
The association along with the Save The Salt efforts has been campaigning and promoting activities that support the preservation of the salt bed, and promoting land speed racing in a manner that preserves the condition of the salt for many years.
The BLM has done the opposite by allowing income producing mining projects to pull the salt off of the lake bed. Now they want to eliminate the racing altogether rather than limiting the mining.

THE WAR BETWEEN BIO FUELS AND OIL BASED FUELS– The Environmental Protection Agency opened the public comment period on its proposal to increase biofuels in the 2017 fuel supply, a move that would increase the amount of ethanol in the fuel supply and prompt more pumps selling fuel with 15 percent ethanol, or E15.
The EPA’s newest proposal increases the need for higher blends of ethanol to record levels in 2017, pushing further past the E10 blend wall, according to critics of the proposal. The blend wall is the term used for the maximum amount of ethanol in fuel that all engines can tolerate — which is E10, or 10 percent ethanol.
“The proposal would increase the amount of E15 that must be sold next year [by at least 700 million gallons], putting countless Americans at risk of misfueling with a prohibited fuel,” the National Marine Manufacturers Association said.
The EPA has slowed the increase of ethanol in the overall fuel supply in previous years from the requirements set forth in the 2007 Renewable Fuel Standard, but continues to set increases the law requires.
The biofuels industry also reacted angrily to the EPA’s proposal for a “modest increase,” as it fell well below the requirements set forth in the RFS.
Public comments are “critical” in this process, the NMMA said.
The EPA will take them into consideration before it finalizes the 2017 ethanol mandate.

Pikes Peak Champion Jeremy Toye to pilot Victory Project 156 in a race to the clouds on June 26
Victory Motorcycles will be motoring into the 2016 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) later this month with two very different motorcycles in an epic gas vs. electric battle dubbed “Thunder vs. Lightning.”
Victory Racing’s gas-powered Project 156 will be piloted by former Pikes Peak Champion Jeremy Toye while the electric Empulse RR will be raced up the mountain by Cycle World’s Road Test Editor Don Canet. Canet piloted Project 156 last year.
Project 156 is a custom race bike built by Roland Sands Designs to serve as a test bed for a prototype engine Victory race technicians developed to analyze the limits of the powerplant that now propels the new Octane production motorcycle. Garnering what was learned from Project 156, the production version of the 1200cc Octane engine was born.
“Don placed well in qualifying last year but was unable to finish the run only a few miles from the top of the mountain due to fueling issue,” says Brian Wismann, Victory Racing Team Manager. “The issue has been addressed and the team this year looks forward to summiting Pikes Peak with Jeremy.”
Toye, a veteran roadracer who took home PPIHC Rookie of the Year and King of the Mountain awards in 2014, says he’s enthused about the opportunity to compete aboard Project 156: “This is a seriously quick bike. There are people out there who seem to be under the impression that Don’s electric Empulse RR is going to beat me up the mountain, but I’m thinking this thing is going to be a heavy hitter there and I’m excited to get on it. I just have to make sure the bike and I are fully synched up.”
Just like the Project 156 racer, the liquid-cooled 60-degree V-Twin in the Octane features short-stroke engine geometry to allow higher engine rpm and more horsepower, and produces a quick-revving engine response more like a sport-bike than any traditional American V-Twin.
As you can imagine, many of the parts in the two engines are shared, but some are purposely designed for racing and to push the limits on other components that are being tested for future production. A good example of this is the bottom-end of the motor. The crankcase, transmission, and bearings on the Project 156 development motor are the exact same as what’s on the Octane production motor, but to really push the limits race engineers had to increase the displacement of the motor with a slightly larger bore.
Project 156 in Action …
With a legacy born on one of the most challenging race courses in the world, the production Octane’s 104 hp and 76 ft. lbs. of torque is class leading. While Victory Motorcycles is not releasing performance numbers for the Project 156 engine, visitors to the mountain will see that it’s putting out world-class performance comparable to other motorcycles with similar engine designs, and they will certainly hear it thundering up the course.

Nevada Native Nations Land Act (HR.2733) [1]
This bill would transfer thousands of acres in Nevada from the management of the Bureau of Land Management to the Bureau of Indian Affairs. This transfer of land could make the land “off-limits” to off-highway-vehicle riders in parts of Nevada northeast of Reno.
The bill is being considered tonight in the House of Representatives under what’s called “Suspension of the Rules” which signifies it is a noncontroversial measure and is likely to pass. However, I understand that the American Motorcyclist Association is opposed to the bill.
We are being asked if we have a position. I am interested in hearing your quick feedback. My recommendation would be that we are generally supportive of the AMA position but not yet ‘sound the alarm bells’ to our congressional champions…especially since this is looking like it will pass in a few hours.

THE HUMAN RECALL– OK This Is A Joke or at least it is supposed to be. Harley Davidson Recalls Nearly One Million Motorcycle Riders
MILWAUKEE, Wisconson–Harley Davidson CEO Keith Wandell announced today that the popular American motorcycle manufacturer has issued a nationwide recall of nearly a million riders of its popular motorcycles. Wandell said the recall was issued “due to the alarming increase in the quality of consumer purchasing the Harley Davidson brand.”
Wandell promised that all riders recalled from their motorcycles would be provided a line of credit at their local Honda dealers along with DVD copies of the 2004 Ice Cube/Dane Cook film, Torque.
Harley-Davidson released a statement explaining the reasons for the recall, which will affect numerous white-collar Harley riders with a focus on those in the medical and legal fields, as well as hundreds of thousands of bankers and financial advisers. The recall will also affect anyone who attempts to ride a Harley Davidson while wearing a helmet, without facial hair, or enjoys regular bathing.
“Harley-Davidson deeply regrets any inconvenience unworthy riders may face as a result of this recall, but we feel it is necessary to ensure that real Harley Davidson fans can continue to enjoy the sense of superiority they have felt for more than a century,” the statement read, “And we want to make certain that true Harley enthusiasts will continue to purchase our over-priced and under-performing motorcycles the way they always have: by stealing, dealing drugs, and through the occasional contract murder.”

’Last year I upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slowdown in overall system performance, particularly in the flower and jewelry applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.
In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as: Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as: NBA 5.0, NFL 3.0 and Golf Clubs 4.1. Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and House cleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system.
Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.

Facial Recognition Software: Technology to Make Big Brother Drool
Government access to biometric data is rapidly expanding, with millions of Americans already in the system. These growing databases, primarily driven by federal policy, pose significant privacy issues.
With simple snap of a photo from a police officer using an iPhone app can search through driver’s license to identify you. Now, facial recognition technology has gone mobile, and it is cross-referenced with other databases. In Sacramento County, the Sheriff’s Department is using an iPhone app built by the same company that makes the department’s license plate reader technology.
In a recently released video, an officer was able to find a suspects real identity within seconds with a simple still picture from a phone camera.
The facial recognition program has expanded from four to 500 officers. While there are legitimate reasons for an officer to have access to biometric data to identify suspects, there are serious privacy implications, along with the potential for abuse.
As we saw in the video, within seconds the app was able to identify a subject. That means whoever holds this technology must have access to a plethora of databases. Information is hard to compartmentalized when it has already been freely accessed by whoever holds the app.
Access to a multitude of databases can lead to abuse and unwarranted surveillance. We currently do not know what databases they have access to, but a recent report suggests it is more than just mug shots and driver’s license photos.
We do know facial recognition software sorts through searchable databases of biometric information that can cross state lines, jurisdictions, and national boundaries. And one of the primary sources of this database may be your state government agency that issues driver’s licenses.
A few years ago, Tenth Amendment Center helped sponsor legislation to stop REAL-ID in your state. Some feared that a national database was being constructed while some simply maintained that this was just a conspiracy theory.
REAL ID, a was signed into law by George W. Bush in 2005. The legislation mandates standards each state must follow when producing identification cards, including driver’s license.
REAL ID also facilitates information sharing between local, state, and federal agencies.The feds compel compliance by threatening to refuse people with non- compliant IDs access to federal areas, including TSA airport checkpoints.
Beyond, the minimum standards, REAL-ID also requires sharing of all biometric data collected. To receive grant money from the federal government to implement REAL-ID, the state has to join a compact called the Driver’s License Agreement. This is similar to a former compact called the Driver’s License Compact but includes biometric data.
So under REAL ID, that facial digital photograph that was snapped at your local DMV/BMV/DPS must meet the following requirements. It is retained electronically in a transferable format. This transferable format allows it to be searchable between a multitude of agencies. The photo is entered in a database where facial recognition software (click here and here) is then used to determine if any fraud has occurred. While there may not be a single, centralized database, there is a sharing program among the states and different jurisdictions. But, this isn’t limited to inside your local DMV/BMV/DPS.
With the proliferation of cameras on virtually every street corner in many cities, these biometric databases create the potential to track people virtually everyplace they go. An article in Scientific American paint a picture that would make Big Brother drool.
While biometric data is stored in a databases accessible and shared between a number of agencies, the FBI has access to one of the largest databases out there. And they want to be exempt from telling citizens about the biometric data they have access to and on who. The Intercept recently reported,
“Specifically, the FBI’s proposal would exempt the database from the provisions in the Privacy Act that require federal agencies to share with individuals the information they collect about them and that give people the legal right to determine the accuracy and fairness of how their personal information is collected and used. The exemption could render millions of records unavailable to subjects. As of December 2015, the NGI system contained 70,783,318 criminal records and 38,514,954 civil records.
“As the coalition notes with alarm, the database stores millions of unique identifiers for U.S. citizens who have not been convicted of a crime alongside those who have. Fingerprints taken for an employer’s background checks, for instance, can be stored and searched in the NGI’s system along with those taken for criminal investigations.”
Another problem with facial recognition is false positives. The Electronic Privacy Information Center EPIC reported in a document, that the software “shall return an incorrect candidate a maximum of 20% of the time, as a result of facial recognition search in support of photo investigation services.”
The effects of REAL-ID are now being seen. Facial recognition technology is currently being used by a variety of agencies.

AUSTRALIAN RACE REPORT— Beach
motorcycle racing set to return in Australia

BEACH motorcycle racing is set make a long-awaited return to an Australian state with a strong motorsport history.
The Levis Motorcycle Club has been granted approval to host a two-day classic event at Sellicks Beach, South Australia in February 2017.
The club – the oldest motorcycle club in South Australia – began beach racing in the 1920s and held annual Sellicks Beach Speed Trials in summer through to 1953. Re-enactments were held in 1986 and 1992 but regular races have not taken place on the beach for more than 60 years.
Entry into the race will be limited to all makes of vintage motorcycles manufactured before 1963 and there will be several classes depending on the age and engine capacity of the bike.
Levis Motorcycle Club Publicity Officer Steven Matthews said last month’s decision by the local Onkaparinga Council to allow the event to go ahead was the culmination of two years of negotiations to address environmental and cultural concerns.
He said there had already been interest from interstate, England and New Zealand, one of the few places in the world where beach racing still regularly occurs.
“People are building bikes and getting them ready now,” he said.
“There will be some guys who take it very seriously while others just want to be involved so they can say that they’ve ridden the event.
“The beach racing is quite unique because it just doesn’t get done anymore and we’re really excited to see it coming back in this form.”
The 800m track – 400m in each direction with a 180 degree hairpin turn – is half the length of the original 1.6km beach circuit.
Organisers are expecting between 200 and 400 bikes to enter and a sell-out crowd of 10,000 people each day to attend.
“We expect the tickets to sell out within a couple of days because there’s been so much interest,” Matthews said.
“We’ve had lots of people already looking to enter bikes because it’s just such a unique opportunity to be involved.”
Sellicks Beach is about 50km south of Adelaide, the South Australian capital.
South Australia is home to the National Motor Museum, the Bay to Birdwood classic car rally, and is home to more than 100 car clubs and 39 motorcycle clubs.
Adelaide hosted the Australian Grand Prix from 1985 to 1995, and is the home of the Clipsal 500, the only CBD street circuit on the V8 Supercar calendar.
The Levis club, named after the English two-stroke motorcycle, hopes a successful February event will lead to it being held every two years in the future.
Matthews said Sellicks Beach was well suited to racing because it had a pebble foundation under the sand, which gave it a solid base and prevented it from becoming boggy.
“It’s quite a unique beach as it provides a really good surface to ride on and that’s why they started races there in the 1920s,” he said.
“We are very keen for this event to be successful in terms of looking after the environment and the cultural aspects and proving to people that it is going to work and not have any negative impact on the area.”
Exact dates for the event are yet to be announced.

THUNDER ON THE LOT, PALMDALE, CA COMING TO BIKERNET– We will be going to The thunder on the lot in palmdale ca, on the 11th, next weekend.
It’s a cool run that we have been going to for quite a few years now. On Saturday it opens at 2pm and stays open late, because they have a band that plays that evening. Check it out on the web.

TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY TESTIFIES ON HIGHWAY BILL IMPLEMENTATION
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Senator John Thune (R-SD), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation convened a hearing concerning the implementation of the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act or FAST Act. The FAST Act is a bi-partisan five-year reauthorization of surface transportation agencies and programs and contains several provisions affecting motorcycle riders.
U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx testified before the committee and provided an update regarding where the Department of Transportation and its reporting agencies, including the Federal Highway Administration (FHA), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stood on implementing the FAST Act.
Primarily, Secretary Foxx was questioned on issues that have made national news as of late including long lines at airports and a consideration to privatize air traffic controllers. Safety was also a key topic during the hearing, but was limited to the safety needs of commercial vehicles and widespread concerns surrounding NHTSA’s management of safety recalls.
Though issues related to motorcycles were not specifically addressed in today’s hearing, they do remain a key component of the FAST Act and are referenced in provisions related to the stopping of federal funding for motorcycle checkpoints and the reestablishment of the Motorcyclist Advisory Council which aims to coordinate with and counsel the Administrator of U.S. Department of Transportation on infrastructure issues that could affect motorcyclists. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) continues to closely monitor the implementation of these provisions working with stakeholders to ensure the interests of motorcyclists are represented.

YOUNG RIDER STARTS HIS MOTORCYCLE QUEST– Sauk Rapids boy’s personal goal: Wearing Harley shirts every day of the school year.
He may not be able to ride them yet, but he can wear them. Day after day after day.

Last fall, as Becky Ayer walked her son Brian into Pleasantview Elementary on his first day of fifth grade, she asked him to set a goal for the year. Something academic related, or sports related, something he could put his mind to and accomplish over time. It was something they did in their family every year.
Brian didn’t know what to say. He looked down at his shirt, a Harley-Davidson T-shirt, and suggested that he could just wear Harley-Davidson shirts every day for the rest of the school year. His mom told him he was being ridiculous because he only owned two.
Challenge accepted.
“I just went, I don’t care, whatever, just as long as it’s a goal and you stick to it,” Becky says. “My husband rides a Harley, and I think it was just his way of connecting more to dad, and so he could get some really cool T-shirts out of it too.”
It wasn’t until two weeks into school that Brian’s teacher, Justin Schiffler, realized something was up. He knew Brian was a fan of Harley-Davidson. Come to think of it, Schiffler couldn’t remember seeing the kid wear anything else.
“His mom and I were chatting, and she was like ‘Hey, I just wanna let you know that we’re doing laundry. He’s not just wearing the same shirt over and over,” Schiffler recalls. “I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’”
Brian was discreet about his goal. He’s a mischievous goofball with outlandish ideas and an intense love of life – “that Harley streak,” his teacher calls it. But he’s also very humble. Even when the St. Cloud Times came calling for a profile near the end of the school year, Brian was a bit reluctant to be the center of attention. He didn’t think he was doing anything cool enough to be in the newspaper.
“And of course all of his classmates were like, ‘Are you kidding me? This is the coolest thing to happen all year,’” Schiffler says.
Brian’s family grew the boy’s collection of Harley shirts from two to 17 by the end of the year. He received them for Christmas, his birthday, his graduation – every gift-worthy occasion, Becky told the St. Cloud Times.
Another fifth-grade teacher, Brent Pakkala, helped the cause as well when he wrote emails to Harley-Davidson dealerships across the country, telling them about Brian and asking them to send their extra promo shirts. By the end of the year, packages were flooding into Pleasantview from tiny dealerships as far away as Kentucky and Alaska.
For Schiffler’s class, Brian’s goal became a lesson in commitment.
“It’s not like he’s climbing Mt. Everest, but I think anytime you have a goal that’s so long-term, it’s harder than probably what people think,” Schiffler says. “I told them, ‘You know, your goals don’t always have to be academic goals. You’ve just gotta make sure it gets done and you do whatever it takes to get it done.’ That was the bigger lesson for him and for the other kids to see, that there probably were days where it stinks and he wanted to get up and wear something else. But he stuck with it.”
The teacher adds that although Brian had to wear a steady rotation of black Harley-Davidson shirts every day, he did shake up his look before the end of the year when he showed up to class wearing his hair in a maroon mohawk. It was a fresh look for summer break, Brian told him.

UNCLE MONKEY ON ART– Art is a tricky thing. What appeals to one person is garbage to the next. The best example of this is the split between graffiti and vandalism.
When something is artful most people are drawn to it. It speaks to us on a deeper level. The curve of a beautiful girl, the sweeping lines of a tank, the subtle shading of an area that captivates us, holding our attention for as long as possible.
I try to look at everything objectively. Beauty can be found it most things. Styles change, directions change but the art, the beauty is still within. Low brow, pin-ups, highbrow, from Banksy to DaVinci one can let themselves go, let the beauty creep into their soul.
A new friend was talking up his truck he had just finished. It was a beautiful job. Clean straight lines, just the right stance, just the right accessories to compliment it.
Unfortunately he painted a front to back fade paint job. Sadly it really dated the truck. A simple solid color pretty much of any part of the color wheel would have made the truck pop. He loved his job and I will admit it had done a flawless application but it wasn’t something I could get excited about. He had ruined a perfectly good canvas to me. But just as I had said one person’s graffiti is another person’s vandalism.
It is that fine line between good and bad. We can smudge it but it is still there. I’m just as guilty as my new friend. I wanted to change up the look of my truck and while what looked good in my mind it didn’t translate to the canvas. Even masters like DaVinci painted over their work. They strive for perfection, for beauty means starting over, making correction, making changes until we hit our mark.

These signs are independent, non-taxpayer efforts at private locations. There are now 47 Highway and Bridge locations named in Wisconsin State Statutes, but only 32 signs (?) are currently erected.
Once deteriorated, they are not being replaced. State Law prohibits any taxpayer dollars, for the most part, going for sign construction, installation or replacement.
Videotaping will be conducted, for possible submission to the History and Discovery Channels etc.
All this in conjunction with the Veterans Community Picnic at Eau Claire Carson Park, June 16 to the 19, 2016.

HANG ON, NOW THERE’S A NEWS COLUMN— And I had to cut some. Lots going on. I was thinking the other day about some of the bullshit in politics. Wouldn’t it be cool if the new president told a committee that every time a member chose party lines over doing what’s right for Freedom in this country, he could just leave.
Interesting thought.
I’ve roughed out a draft about MetalSport’s progress. They have an amazing team and this is a shot of their new machine capable of cutting a 45-inch wheel. Hang on.
Hell, I sold out my first batch of books at the Chili Cook-off and I gave away a bunch to friends and folks who helped with the effort.
I need to wrap up my 1902 Orient story. And Peter Linney is breathing all over me to publish a new Triumph feature. It will be busy next week. Can’t wait for a couple of road tests.
