THE ATTACK of the E15 FUEL BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for April 21, 2022

Hey,

What an interesting news day. We have a devastating war going on, and Martha is working on the catering service for the next meeting of world leaders to discuss banning Russian players from joining the NFL. This distinct and delicate meeting will happen while old women and children are being annihilated on the streets of the Ukraine. Should we order caviar for our meeting buffet? Fuck.

As you scroll through the news you’ll come across two teaser reports by Bill Bish of NCOM. You’ll read that England has made it easier for Harley-Davidson to sell motorcycles. The next report discusses banning (ICE) internal combustion engines in England. “We must ride electric or we’re doomed.”

Is the world nuts or what. Let’s hit the news:

MEANWHILE AT THE MOVIES–Kawasaki Ninja Models To Be Featured In “Top Gun: Maverick”

Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell returns to the big screen, once again riding a Kawasaki Ninja.

There are few motorcycle movie scenes more iconic than Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell riding his Kawasaki Ninja GPZ 900R along the flight line at United States Navy Fighter Weapons School in Miramar, California back in 1986.

That scene helped cement Mitchell’s “Maverick” image as a TOPGUN hero. 36 years later, Maverick is not only back at TOPGUN, but back riding a Kawasaki, only today he chooses to ride the supercharged Kawasaki Ninja H2™ Carbon in the new Paramount Pictures blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” opening May 27th, 2022.

“Working with the “Top Gun: Maverick” team has been amazing,” said Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., Vice President, Marketing, Chris Brull. “When we had the chance to jump onboard and see our Kawasaki Ninja motorcycles on the big screen again, we had to be involved. We know that Maverick is a dedicated Kawasaki rider and we made sure he had a full garage of Kawasaki models.”

To celebrate “Top Gun: Maverick,” Kawasaki has partnered with Paramount Consumer Products to launch limited edition t-shirts exclusively sold at participating Kawasaki dealers in the U.S.A. These t-shirts feature both the iconic Ninja GPZ 900R featured in the original Top Gun as well as the supercharged Ninja H2 Carbon. Visit your local Kawasaki dealer while supplies last.

A total of four supercharged Ninja H2 Carbon machines and restored two Ninja GPZ 900R motorcycles were provided to the “Top Gun: Maverick” production team along with some additional surprise models that may appear in Maverick’s personal hanger featured in the film.

“Top Gun: Maverick” will premiere in theaters nationwide on May 27th, 2022 and fans can now experience the breathtaking power of the world’s only supercharged production hypersport motorcycles by owning a Ninja H2™, Ninja H2 Carbon or Ninja H2™R.

Hopefully Top Gun is headed to Ukraine to take care of business.—Bandit

FOUR Morning Rituals to Start Your Day Off Right–
Establishing a regular morning routine helps you stay more focused and productive during the day. It can be as simple as making your bed, or reminding yourself of one good thing that happened the previous day. These habits will help shift your perspective to a positive one and get you prepared for the day ahead.

1. Make Your Bed!

As soon as you get up in the morning, make sure to make your bed. It may seem tempting to leave it unmade and rush to get some breakfast but the simple task of tidying your bed is attributed to boosting mental health. American author and retired Navy admiral, William H. McRaven writes in his book, “Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life,” that making your bed in the morning sets you up for success. A tidy bed is a start to a tidy life. The act may be small, but it helps kick off a chain of small successes to achieve throughout the day. 2

2. Drink a Tall Glass of Water

It’s very important to drink a tall glass of water right after you wake up as your body may be very dehydrated. We tend to lose water through the night by breathing and sweating which is why it’s so incredibly important to replenish our water intake as soon as possible. Expert opinion on how much water to drink varies but ranges from a minimum of 16 ounces to a liter. Water is very important in aiding your kidneys in flushing out toxins and also helps you achieve better skin. Including this simple task in your morning routine can make a big difference in your health and will help you stay more focused and alert throughout the day, improving productivity.

3. Do a Simple Meditation

Setting aside just 10 to 15 minutes every morning to meditate and self-reflect can have surprising benefits for both mind and body. In this modern age, we are increasingly overburdened with information and thoughts which make it very difficult for us to achieve stillness and relaxation. Our minds jump from one random thought to another, almost like a monkey jumping from branch to branch. This is a well-known concept in Buddhism commonly referred to as “monkey mind.” People often complain that they feel overwhelmed in the mornings just thinking about all the tasks ahead of them. Meditating has proven to help with this by helping you kickstart your day more peacefully. By calming the mind, you can think more clearly during the day and decrease anxiety.

Meditating has also been associated with boosted energy levels due to the release of endorphins. This natural energy boost can help productivity, without needing as much caffeine throughout the work day to sustain energy.

Simply hop into some comfortable clothes and drink a tall glass of water before finding somewhere quiet to relax. There are many techniques to help you meditate, but the simplest is to just close your eyes and breathe gently while trying not to think of anything. This is difficult to achieve at first, but that’s normal! Keep on trying for a few weeks until your mind learns to use this time to quiet down. You can try lighting a candle or your favorite incense to help you achieve this and send a signal to your brain to relax.

4. Try Dry Brushing

Practiced by the ancient cultures of the past, dry brushing has been associated with improving blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. The act of brushing or scrubbing your body helps exfoliate the skin, making it softer and giving it a youthful glow. It will also help get rid of dead skin thus helping you absorb moisturizers more effectively. Sweat and toxins will be able to leave your body more easily due to the unclogging of pores. Many people also report feeling energized after dry brushing. This is why it’s best carried out in the morning, before you hop into the shower.

The whole process should only take 5 minutes. Choose a good body brush—a firm bristle brush—and start brushing upwards from the bottom of your legs towards your heart, until you have covered your whole body. It should not hurt; if it does, make sure to stop as you may have sensitive skin. Brush as often as you like, but preferably a couple times a week. Your skin should give you a good indicator of how well it’s doing.

Incorporate these four habits to your morning, and you’ll be setting yourself up for a more productive, fulfilling day.

Two guys were discussing popular family trends on sex, marriage, and family values..

Bill said, ‘I didn’t sleep with my wife before we got married, did you?’

Larry replied, ‘I’m not sure, what was her maiden name?’

A little boy went up to his father and asked: ‘Dad, where did my intelligence come from?’

The father replied. ‘Well, son, you must have got it from your mother, ‘cause I still have mine.’

‘Mr. Clark, I have reviewed this case very carefully,’ the divorce Court Judge said, ‘And I’ve decided to give your wife $775 a week,’

‘That’s very fair, your honor,’ the husband said. ‘And every now and then I’ll try to send her a few bucks myself.’

ANOTHER BIDEN ANNOUNCEMENT–

Biden has announced that he will direct the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to issue an emergency waiver to allow for the sale of E15 during the summer months, as well as other actions to facilitate the sale of E15.

The American Motorcyclist Association strongly opposes these moves. The AMA fought a similar waiver under the Trump administration to allow for year-round sales of E15 and even joined a lawsuit led by the American Petroleum Institute, which successfully overturned that proposal.

None of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and ATVs in use in this country is certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to use fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol by volume. E15, which contains 15 percent ethanol, is in fact illegal to use in motorcycles, boat engines, lawn mowers, chainsaws and other outdoor power equipment products.

The planned EPA waiver is set to be finalized before summertime sales begin on June 1. E15 sales are traditionally barred between June 1 and September 15 due to the blends’ higher volatility, which contributes to smog in the warmer months. According to the White House, the EPA will also consider working with states to expand E15 availability and modifying labeling at the fuel pump.

The AMA opposes modifying labels at the pump that could potentially misinform customers. The AMA instead advocates for stronger labeling at the pump to make the potential dangers of E15 clear and concise. The inadequacy of labeling can be seen in the rise of Unleaded 88, a fuel that contains 15 percent ethanol and is deliberately mislabeled.

The AMA is asking motorcyclists nationwide to make their voices heard and send a pre-written message to President Biden and EPA Administrator Michael Regan telling them to reconsider this misguided proposal that will increase the risk of misfuelling for motorcyclists, boaters, and other small engine owners while doing little to address the increased cost of fuel.

NEWS FROM THE WRESTLING ROCK AND ROLL BIKERNET LIBRARY–

The Gypsy King continues to showcase his musical talent with a duet in the BT Sport Promo for Fury v Whyte

Fury v Whyte will take place on Saturday, April 23, and is exclusively live on BT Sport Box Office

LONDON, UK – Ahead of defending his world title belts, heavyweight champion of the world Tyson Fury has joined forces with legendary American singer-songwriter Don McLean to create a brand-new rendition of “American Pie”.

Fury, who will take on fellow Brit Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium on April 23rd live on BT Sport Box Office, famously performed “American Pie” after defeating Deontay Wilder in Fury v Wilder II in 2020. The song has since become synonymous with the boxer who is not afraid to showcase his musical talent.

The latest iteration of the song sees McLean singing the verses to “American Pie”, perfectly articulating Tyson’s comeback story before he’s joined in the chorus by the Gypsy King himself. The Morecambe-based fighter is no stranger to jumping on the mic, having previously appeared on Robbie William’s song “Bad Sharon” in 2019.

Ahead of Fury v Whyte the song will be aired on BT Sport to promote the fight and will be played in the stadium on fight night as 94,000 fans pack into Wembley stadium to witness the first all-British heavyweight world title fight for a generation.

In addition to celebrating Fury’s homecoming, the duet coincides with the 50th anniversary of ‘American Pie’ – both the album and single as well as the release of a children’s book, a documentary about the pop culture impact of the song, and a world tour which will come to the UK and Europe starting in September 2022.

Fans will be able to watch all the build-up, undercard and the main event of Fury v Whyte exclusively live on BT Sport Box Office.

THE BIKERNET OIL COUNCIL–US Democrats are engaging in epic denial on oil and gasoline prices.

Politicians around the world, including US Democrats, have opposed and threatened the oil and gas industry’s existence. Now they are denying responsibility for the consequences: higher prices.

Oops

US Democrats are trying everything imaginable to lower oil/gasoline prices except the thing that would actually work: STOP THREATENING THE EXISTENCE OF THE OIL INDUSTRY. Instead of acknowledging their key role in increasing oil prices, Dems are engaging in epic denial tactics.

For 15+ years Democratic politicians, including Joe Biden, have relentlessly attacked oil investment, oil production, and oil transport—leading to higher prices and lower security.

Instead of taking credit for their “success,” they are denying that they are anti-fossil fuels!¹

The “business decisions” denial tactic

For 15+ years Democratic politicians have pushed everything they can to threaten new oil production: net-zero, ESG, proposed bans, etc.

Now they are blaming companies for “business decisions” to refrain from threatened oil production!²

The “windfall profits” denial tactic

For 15+ years Democratic politicians have done everything they can to make new oil production unprofitable—leading to less investment.

Now they are condemning companies for not investing enough “windfall profits”!³

The “9000 leases” denial tactic

For 15+ years Dem politicians have driven up oil prices by delaying/destroying countless economically viable oil projects.

To deny responsibility they are attacking companies for not developing 9000 leases the companies judge to be economically nonviable.4

The “price gouging” denial tactic

For 15+ years Democratic politicians have driven up oil prices by attacking oil investment, oil production, and oil transport.

To deny responsibility they are calling for yet another worthless “price gouging” investigation.5

The energy crisis is simple.

Politicians around the world, including US Democrats, have restricted fossil fuel investment/production/transport on the false promise of replacement by unreliable solar/wind.

The result: higher prices and lower security.

Anti-fossil fuel politicians, please stop the denial.

BIKERS INSIDE THE BELTWAY 2022– Paving the Way & Rolling Toward Washington, D.C.

Bikers Inside the Beltway, less than a month away and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation is rolling toward Washington.

Since 2009 the MRF has brought over a thousand motorcyclists to Washington to meet with their members of Congress with the sole mission of promoting a legislative agenda that continues to successfully become law on behalf of all street riding motorcyclists.

The MRF’s legislative agenda – beyond the three items listed below — recommended and approved by SMRO leaders at the 2021 Meeting of the Minds, is not all-inclusive. The following items are at the top of the MRF’s legislative agenda as we move toward Bikers Inside the Beltway:

Profiling: Sustain lobbying efforts for the passage of resolutions or legislation that promotes awareness and prohibition of motorcyclists profiling.

Renewable Fuels: Advocate for targeted changes to the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). Support the universal availability of approved fuel blends, containing no more than 10 percent ethanol by volume. Ensure that consumers are educated on proper fuel usage.

Autonomous Vehicles: Advocate and monitor any legislation or regulations related to motorcycles concerning connected and autonomous vehicles (AV) including endorsing rulemaking to set new standards specific to seeing, detecting, and properly reacting to motorcycles. Ensure motorcycles are part of all testing and development procedure.

The pandemic, and the events of January 6, 2021, did not deter the MRF. More than one-hundred motorcyclists attended the first in-person meeting in 2021 with members of Congress last May. The above items are the missing pieces of the 2021 infrastructure legislation, and they are driving the MRF’s need to return to Washington when Bikers Inside the Beltway meets on May 17.

To ensure that the mission of getting our message to Congress does not fail, please consider the following:

– Make your appointments locally or in Washington.
– Familiarize yourself with the briefing points.
– Confirm your appointment locally or in Washington.
– Virtual or in person, make notes on your meeting.
– Share your meeting notes with the MRF.

A meeting of the MRF Board of Directors will take place on May 16 at the Embassy Suites, 1900 Diagonal Road, Alexandria, VA 22314. Rooms are available through the hotel direct line 703-684-5900 and use reference code MRF.

The pre-event briefing and Q&A for visits to Congress at 7:00 p.m., May 16 is required for all attendees. Briefing packets and “leave behinds” will be available during the briefing.

Bikers Inside the Beltway 2022 – The Motorcycle Riders Foundation — paving the way for the long haul and rolling toward Washington, D.C.!

This fuel injection system allows anyone with an OEM or after-market Twin Cam motor and (throttle-by-wire) throttle body to run a Thundermax EFI system on any custom build! To get all of the features of a Thundermax wide-band and self-tuning EFI system, along with a NAMZ 100% plug-n-play wiring harness, and exclusive twist grip assembly, is a huge step into the future of custom-built bikes.

This kit will offer a speedometer data wire for use with any electronic speedometer, and also the use of a Sportster or Big Twin fuel pump while providing a ground switched, “low fuel” output wire for an LED or gauge of your choice.

All items are proudly Made in the USA!

When will this product be released?

Our expected release for this product is around May/June 2022.

What is the price of this product?

MSRP: $1995.00, which includes EFI

ECM and extend O2 sensors, complete plug-n-play wiring harness, proprietary twist grip sensor and low fuel module.

What additional details do I need to know about this product?
This is a stand-alone fuel injection/engine management kit ONLY. The lighting and switching functions of the bike wiring is not included.

NAMZ does offer complete wiring harnesses in three different configurations, part number NCBH-01-A is the most robust with self-canceling turn signals, a combined run & turn signal front wiring option, and combined run and brake wiring functions on the rear (RED) turn signals.

The second, part number NCBH-01-B is less robust than the (A) harness because it is intended for amber front and rear turn signals ONLY.

Lastly, part number NCBH-01-C is a “bare-bones” full bike harness WITHOUT any turn signals but like the rest, provide headlight, taillight, key switch and all other basic functions to run your motorcycle.

THE BIKERNET SONG LYRICS OF THE WEEK– WISDOM SONG FOR THE WEEKEND:

“FILL HER UP” by Sting

– Album: Brand New Day (1999)
– Written by: Sting
– (feat. James Taylor)

Mobile station, where I stand
This old gas pump in my hand
The boss don’t like me
A face like a weasel
Oil on my hand
And the smell of diesel

Here comes a big shot
(Here he comes!)
From the city
(Goddamn!)
A V8 engine
She runs so pretty
(Woo!)

Fill her up, son, unleaded
I need a full tank of gas where I’m headed

Up in the front seat
A pretty red-head
We’re going to Vegas
We’re gonna get wed
So fill her up son!
Don’t be starin’!
Yeah, that’s a real diamond
She be wearin’

I’m gonna take my baby one day (yeah)
I’m gonna fill her up and head west
(That’s it)
I’m gonna find some money, all right

See those tail lights heading west
I got no money to invest
I got no prospects or education
I was lucky getting a job at this gas station

That old cash box
(That old cash box)
On the top shelf
(On the top shelf)
The boss is sleeping
(The boss is sleeping)
I’ll just help myself

Let’s consider this
As just a loan
I can sort it out
Later on the phone

I’m gonna pick my girl up tonight
I’m gonna fill her up and head west
I’m gonna show her all the bright lights
We’re gonna say we lived ‘fore we come home

And as I head through the woods on the way back
The evening sun is slanting through the pine trees real pretty
It’s like I walked into a glade of heaven
And there’s music playing
This money is cold in my hand
And a voice somewhere is saying
“Why would you wanna take that stolen thing?”
“What real happiness can it bring?”

You’re gonna fill her up with sadness
You’re gonna fill her up with shame
You’re gonna fill her up with sorrow
Before she even takes your name

You’re gonna fill her up with madness
You’re gonna fill her up with blame
You’re gonna live with no tomorrow
You’re gonna fill her up with pain

You’re gonna fill her up with darkness
You’re gonna fill her up with night
You gotta fill her up with Jesus!
You gotta fill her up with light!

You gotta fill her up with spirit!
You gotta fill her up with grace
You gotta fill her up with heaven!
You got the rest of life to face

You gotta fill her up the right way
You gotta fill her up with care
You gotta fill her up with babies
You gotta fill her up with this way

You’re gonna love that girl forever
You’re gonna fill her up for life
You’re gonna be her loving husband
She gonna be your loving wife

You’ve gotta fill her up with gladness
You gotta fill her up with joy!
You gotta fill her up with love
You gotta fill her up with love

2021 State of the Climate Report: Empirical observations show no sign of ‘climate crisis’ –

‘Snow cover stable, sea ice levels recovering, & no change in storm activity’

In his annual State of the Climate report, Ole Humlum, emeritus professor at the University of Oslo, examined detailed patterns in temperature changes in the atmosphere and oceans together with trends in climate impacts. Many of these show no significant trends and suggest that poorly understood natural cycles are involved.

And while the report finds gentle warming, there is no evidence of dramatic changes, with snow cover stable, sea ice levels recovering, and no change in storm activity.

https://www.thegwpf.org/publications/empirical-observations-show-no-sign-of-climate-crisis/

A systematic review of climate trends and observational data by an eminent climate scientist has found no evidence to support the claim of a climate crisis.

TODAY’S HISTORY LESSON– Do you ever wonder who first thought of Masking Tape?

In the 1920s, prosperity and production changes made automobiles more affordable for the average American. And along with the ability to purchase an automobile came the desire to make one’s car stand out with custom pinstripes. However, it was difficult for paint shop workers to perfect the pinstripe because the tapes available at the time often caused issues, either coming off too soon or sticking too firmly and ruining the paint job.

Richard Drew, a 3M employee, was on a sales call with an auto shop when he heard a worker swearing; subpar tape had ruined the man’s paint job. Drew promised he would create a solution. And after two years of experimentation, he did!

In 1925, Drew successfully created Scotch Brand Masking Tape, which adhered strongly but came off easily so as not to ruin a worker’s paint job. Drew’s masking tape was quickly adopted and remains a staple tool in many industries today.

The MRF (2) and Membership Drive (2) will be in the mix soon. The cost of printing the ABATE flags was $15.00 each, Each Feather Flag system was on sale at $49.99 at the time of purchase. It was a lot higher this time. Oh well it’s only money .. right !

I have a list of different places that I’ll be at throughout the summer, and I might pick up another event or two along the way.

Pushing raffle ticket sales, and membership drives too. It’s a kick ass game I got going and my good looks and charm bring them in like flies to fly paper!!

“I can dream, can’t I?”

I’m giving it the good old college try to be the top gun/recruiter this year. MOTM 2021 will tell for sure if I make it or not. Watch your six folk, I’m taking names and money to get the job done.

Thank you all for what you all do out there for motorcyclists right across the U.S.A.

AND NOW FROM THE BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER–Brain Regeneration Is Real: This Is How to Do It

Once considered impossible, brain recovery is now a well-studied phenomenon

Have you ever wished you could regenerate those brain cells you sacrificed in college? Do you fear that your aging brain is in a perpetual state of decline? Medical science is being rewritten to show that we can repair our brain and it’s something anyone can do.

It’s a commonly held misconception that the brain is beyond repair. Even the medical establishment has asserted that once we kill brain cells, they are gone forever. The fact is, the brain can repair itself, and as science is now proving, there is a real benefit to simple practices that can help keep our brains sharp and elastic throughout our lifetime.

Rewriting the Story of Brain Health

The field of cognitive neuroscience is relatively new—only around 100 years old—so it’s no surprise that we are constantly arriving at a newer and better understanding of how the neural circuitry of the human brain supports overall brain functioning.

For most of those 100 years, it was believed that once damaged, the brain couldn’t regenerate. Brain cells were finite, and any loss or injury would be suffered as a deficiency for the rest of that person’s life. This created a false belief that the brain is essentially in a perpetual state of decline.

Although compelling evidence to the contrary was presented as early as 1960, the medical dogma was (and is) slow to change. It wasn’t until the 1980s when Fernando Nottebohm’s research at Rockefeller University clearly indicated that neurogenesis—production of new nerve cells, aka neurons—was taking place in the adult vertebrate brain.

The next big step in this scientific evolution would take more than 30 years. However, the pace of our understanding of how the brain is wired was about to take a quantum leap.

Our Elastic Brain

The growth of new neurons in an adult, mammalian brain was first seen in 1992, when scientists isolated neural stem cells from mice in a Petri dish. This regeneration was then replicated thousands of times in a variety of published studies over the next 25 years.

It’s now accepted in the medical scientific community that the adult brain is capable of growing new neurons and glial cells, something previously disbelieved by the medical establishment. The brain is now considered to be resilient, pliable—plastic.

The term neuroplasticity refers to the ability of the brain to “rewire” itself through the practice of the desired skill. It’s the combination of new cells and new learning that creates this magic. When fresh nerve cells are well-stimulated (i.e., trained through specific learning exercises), they make new connections. In other words, they become healthy brain cells that contribute to learning and the development of new skills.

Just like the muscles of the body, when the brain is well-nourished and stimulated through proper exercise, it heals and grows. And with proper care and feeding, this amazing brain regeneration can occur throughout life.

To help make this a “no-brainer,” GreenMedInfo has compiled a simple list of ways you can safeguard brain health, stimulate new brain cell growth, and even heal the brain.

Get Lots of Physical Exercise

When you hear the phrase “train your brain,” you probably don’t think of lifting weights. Turns out, physical exercise is one of the best things you can do for your body and your brain.

The brain benefits of exercise are two-fold. First, the brain is a voracious consumer of glucose and oxygen, with no ability to store excess for later use. A continual supply of these nutrients is needed to maintain optimal functioning.

Physical exercise increases the blood flow to the brain, delivering a boost of fresh oxygen and glucose to hungry brain cells. A 2014 study showed that just 30 minutes of moderate cardio was enough to boost cognitive functioning in adult brains of all ages.

But the benefits don’t stop there. Exercise is believed to stimulate hippocampal neurogenesis: new cell growth in the region of the brain associated with long-term memory and emotions. Healthy cell growth in this region is important to the aging brain and believed to help prevent cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Use Stress Reduction Techniques

Our modern world runs on stress, so the need to unwind is easy to understand. What you might not be aware of, is just how damaging continual immersion in the fight-or-flight hormones of stress can be to your brain.

Stress is one of the top factors in age-related cognitive decline. This makes engaging in regularly scheduled leisure activities not just a fun thing to do, but an important step toward ensuring optimal brain health.

You don’t need to look far to find ways to de-stress. Let your interests guide you. The key to picking brain-healthy pastimes is to avoid passive activities such as watching TV and instead choose stimulating hobbies that engage the brain through patterns, puzzles, and problem-solving.

A 2011 study published in the Journal of Neuropsychiatry found that activities such as playing games, reading books, and crafts like quilting and knitting reduced rates of cognitive impairment by up to 50 percent.

Engaging with art also ranks high on the list of brain-healthy hobbies. Studies prove that once again, it isn’t enough to be a passive observer. To get the brain boost, we must engage.

In a German study reported in the journal PLOS One, researchers studied two groups: a group that observed art, and a group that produced art. The study concluded that compared to those who observed art, the art producers demonstrated increased interactivity between the frontal and parietal cortices of the brain. This increased brain connectivity translates to enhanced psychological resilience in the group of art producers. In other words, their ability to resist the negative effects of stress improved.

Looking for a more low-key way to unwind? How about playing beautiful music or sitting in quiet contemplation? Meditation has been shown to lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and even build resistance to feelings of anxiety and depression. And while listening to music may seem like a passive activity, research suggests that the act of listening to musical patterns facilitates brain neurogenesis.

Both meditation and listening to music affect the secretion of key hormones that enhance brain plasticity, thus changing the very way we respond to stress. Talk about good medicine!

Employ Continuous Learning

Aging is often associated with cognitive decline, both in research and anecdotal evidence. However, a growing body of literature shows that retaining a sharp, lucid brain means never retiring our critical thinking skills.

The need to continually challenge and expand our thinking was demonstrated in the aforementioned 2011 study published in the Journal of Neuropsychiatry. In this study, the leisure time activities of a group of older adults (ages 70 to 89) were monitored for effect on mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

The study determined that the level of complexity of the activity was key to its effectiveness at preventing MCI. Working with computers, reading books, and activities associated with patterns and problem-solving contributed to a significant decrease in the odds of developing MCI. Less stimulating activities showed no statistical effect. This stresses the importance of feeling challenged and stimulated by the activities we pursue as we age.

These findings were reinforced by a 2014 study of nearly 3,000 volunteers, spanning more than a decade. This study examined the potential long-term benefit of cognitive training in older adults. Results showed that participants demonstrated enhanced brain processing speed and reasoning skills for up to 10 years after the training was completed.

These tangible brain benefits spilled over into daily life and were measured in the participant’s ability to complete normal daily tasks, such as personal finances, meal preparation, and personal care routines. The study revealed that stimulating environments help increase the complexity of the brain.

MORE FROM THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION–There is no doubt that next month during “Bikers Insider the Beltway” self-driving cars will be a major topic of discussion!

During every Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) presentation around the country, we lay out our agenda, which includes concerns over the deployment of self-driving or autonomous vehicles. One point that is hammered home is that these vehicles are on the roads right now and bikers should be aware of that fact. Most people understand this, but just in case, a recent story from San Francisco might open some eyes.

Last week a self-driving car was pulled over by police, and NO ONE WAS INSIDE. The vehicle was pulled over for operating without its headlights on, no doubt a safety concern. Yet after the police officer returned to his patrol car to confer with his partner, the self-driving car took off and fled before being pulled over again.

While it’s hard not to laugh at the idea of a car with no driver fleeing the police, it does raise a major issue the MRF has been worried about, the lack of oversight and rush to deploy this new technology without proper oversight. Specifically, the MRF has pressed lawmakers to require these auto manufacturers attest that their technology can read, respond, and react to all roadway users and more specifically that motorcyclists are accounted for.

Some in Washington D.C. seem to understand, Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently said about the deployment of this technology “We essentially have the Wild West on our roads right now.” Adding, “It is a disaster waiting to happen.”

REPORT FROM THE CENTER FOR INDUSTRIAL PROGRESS–Health & safety standards

The third aspect of establishing the right standards of health and safety is “economically desirable.”

What are the economic consequences?

Part of looking at the full context involves asking whether a policy aimed at promoting human health and safety actually has negative economic consequences that do more harm than good to human health and safety.

Imagine if somebody had said in the 1800s, for example, that people shouldn’t be allowed to use coal to run their stoves to cook their food and heat their homes because it creates a lot of smoke, which has a negative health impact, and instead mandated cleaner coal technologies that simply weren’t affordable at that point in time. Such a mandate would effectively ban the use of coal altogether.

While that would protect people from one threat to health, it would also eliminate the positive consequences to health that come from using coal—namely, keeping warm and having a steady supply of cooked food. And those positives were far, far more positive than the negatives were negative.

Of course, we want to improve over time—and we do, using technology and using the right policy.

For example, eventually we progressed to where we could economically gain the benefits that come from powering our homes with coal without the harms of filling our homes with coal smoke.

But that has to happen gradually. At any given time, it is wrong to restrict energy or anything else that’s fundamentally vital for human beings to a degree where it does economic damage. If everything has to be perfect in order to be used, then this will prevent people from improving their lives.

Who decides?

And who should decide what these standards are? In general, it makes sense for the people directly affected—who need energy, who need to protect themselves from endangerment—to have control over those standards, whether that be at the state level or the local level.

It’s very questionable to have all of these things decided on a national level when the people are affected by them locally in very different ways, for all sorts of economic and geographic reasons.

For example, a certain amount of car emissions may cause smog in Los Angeles due to its unique topography whereas in another area that threat doesn’t exist at all. It doesn’t make sense for both of them to have the same emission levels.

In general, decision-making should be local. But the key is no matter where those decisions are made, achieving freedom from endangerment requires that our decisions be reasonable and equitable, scientifically verifiable, and economically desirable.

187 CUSTOM CYCLES TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT– “Adulting” is finally catching up with Richard Gadson.

The busy motorcycle drag racing rider/tuner is one-by-one cutting back on his dragstrip duties to focus on business and family.

Last week Gadson announced that Jordan Angelo would be riding the famous, Brad Mummert-owned, old school GS, nitrous Pro Street bike. And now Gadson says that he will have to miss the All-Harley World Shootout race in Fayetteville this coming weekend.

It was big news when Gadson announced he would go Bagger drag racing with Live Oak, California-based V-Twin powerhouse 187 Custom Cycles, and his Fayetteville replacement is every bit as newsworthy—veteran drag racing superstar Chip Ellis.

“I was trying to think of someone else who could ride a hand-clutch bike and help tune, and I thought of Chip Ellis,” said Gadson.

“I felt terrible telling Pat and Crystal (187 owner/builder/tuner Patrick Lynch and his wife/rider Crystal Lynch) that I wouldn’t be able to go to Fayetteville. They’ve been so excited about this race. But when I told them I’d already talked to Chip, Crystal lit up. She said ‘I’ve always wanted to work with Chip!’”

“We look at Richard as family, and we need to do what’s necessary,” said Patrick. “Crystal and I are grateful that we can help Richard in a time of need and still have a high quality rider during his time off.”

Ellis piloted the first 8-second, all-motor Harley streetbike when he rode for George Bryce and Star Racing back in the mid 2000s.

“We ran all the AHDRA races back then,” said Ellis. “That was when we were racing with S&S and we had a lot of fast Harley’s. We also had 124 Challenge bikes, and I went 9.30 on one of those things.”

Way back in the AMA/Prostar days, Ellis hooked up with Coby Adams of Adams Performance to race a Kawasaki V-Twin in the Hot Rod Cruiser class that was sponsored by Yamaha’s Star brand. Politics of the day being what they were, the quick Kawasaki eventually had a whopping 100 pounds added to slow the combination down against the Yamahas.

Ellis had a stellar NHRA Pro Stock career with Bryce and S&S Cycle’s George Smith and their G2 (G-Squared) brand, and was personally responsible for helping G2’s customers get acclimated to their new Buells back when those bikes first hit the NHRA. He’s also ridden for Vance & Hines, Harry Lartigue, Junior Pippin, White Alligator Racing, and most recently Matt Smith.

He’s never let his streetbike clutch hand get rusty, currently lapping a Superstock Kawasaki ZX14. “I’m really looking forward to racing these Baggers and see what this old man can still do,” said Ellis. He’ll be riding in Superstock and Pro Bagger while Crystal focuses on Eliminator classes.

For now, this is a one-race only deal, as Gadson hopes to be caught up with off-track responsibilities in time for the May 27-28 Junior Pippin Southern Nationals at Silver Dollar Motorsports Park in Reynolds, Georgia. “That gives me a month to keep doing what I’m doing and working really hard,” said Gadson, who has recently stepped up his tow truck driving game. “I’m doing exceptionally well and I just don’t want to stop. I’ve got to put the same energy into this that I’ve put into racing.”

Meanwhile, Ellis and the Lynch’s will be squeezing every bit of energy they can out of their Fuelab, Worldwide Bearings, GRC Crankshafts, and M2 Shocks equipped 187 Custom Cycle Baggers.

EPA to Expand E15 Ethanol Fuel Sales into Summer–

Following long-fought debate, the Biden Administration announced that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will issue a temporary waiver to allow for the summertime sale of gasoline with up to 15% ethanol (E15) to help address high fuel costs.

Currently, E15 cannot be sold between June 1 and September 15 due to fuel-volatility concerns that higher blends of ethanol combined with warmer temperatures may lead to increased ground-level ozone formation and smog. The agency will review the waiver every 20 days to determine if remaining in place is justified.

Summertime sales of E15 has been a hot-button issue for years. Under the Trump Administration, the EPA issued a rule to permanently allow year-round sale of E15; however, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia found this rule unlawful and the U.S. Supreme Court declined to consider the appeal. The Biden Administration says this latest decision is based on its authority to pursue a temporary emergency action.

Ethanol, especially in higher concentrations such as E15, can cause metal corrosion and dissolve certain plastics and rubbers in older automobiles that were not constructed with ethanol-resistant materials and in certain specialty high-performance equipment installed on newer vehicles. SEMA opposes the expansion of E15 gasoline as a lack of clear labeling on gas pumps does not provide sufficient protection to guard against misfuelling.

ANOTHER QUOTE of the WEEK–

“You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.”
– Anonymous

This quote is a modernized variation of a passage Victor Hugo wrote in his 1845 essay “Villemain:” :

“You have enemies? Why, it is the story of every man who has done a great deed or created a new idea. It is the cloud which thunders around everything that shines. Fame must have enemies, as light must have gnats. Do not bother yourself about it; disdain. Keep your mind serene as you keep your life clear.” – Victor Hugo

Beware of E15 Biofuel When You Pump Up Your Powersports Vehicle–

The Biden administration is calling for increased use of E15 biofuel, using a 15 percent ethanol blend, to be sold this summer in an effort to ease prices at gas pumps. But that move threatens to put powersports engines at risk of reduced power, stalling, hesitation, and, in some cases, costly or catastrophic engine failure.

“Many consumers remain confused about which fuels are appropriate for use in their vehicles and E15 should be avoided at all cost when it comes to powersports products,” said Scott Schloegel, senior vice president at the MIC Government Relations Office. “Increasing the sale and availability of E15 increases the possibility of misfueling. Using E15 in motorcycles and off-highway recreational vehicles is prohibited under federal law by the Environmental Protection Agency because of increased emissions and the potential for engine damage. And the use of E15 can void vehicle warranties.”

Due in part to its tendency to evaporate quickly in warmer temperatures and contribute to smog, the sale of E15 is usually banned in many parts of the country from June to September and may only be used in 2001 and newer cars and trucks. It’s available at about 2,300 fueling stations, according to the Department of Energy, but President Biden said the U.S. will invest $100 million in biofuel infrastructure to expand E15 production. According to the White House, at current prices, E15 can save an average of 10 cents per gallon compared to traditional gasoline.

The EPA is expected to issue an emergency waiver in early June to allow E15 use for the summer.
