Tail Gunner Here! This month we review Wide Open Custom Plastic LLC wind shield mount fairing. My buddy Jeff decided it was time for a new look to his ’98 Road King. He wanted to mount a fairing with state of the art stereo components, CD player, radio, MP3 player and some kick ass Kenwood speakers.
The windshield mount fairing from Wide Open fits the bill for any Harley Bagger. He also opted for some upgrades which included a Sony radio,
CD player with MP3 port and Kenwood speakers. Total price for the fairing with upgrades was $950.00.
We also added a Tune Trapper hidden antenna in the fairing and Memphis Shades windshield locking tabs we salvaged from a previous build.

Then we just slide it into place where the OEM windshield mounts. Let me tell you, this was a no brainer! For the exception of a slight mishap (bike fell off the lift and broke the windshield YIKES!)
The install was amazingly simple. Wide Open shipped us another wind shield over night, so we would have it for the Laughlin River Run, thanks Wide Open! Not only did they ship fast, but they sent us an upgraded “flip shield”. A few things happened after the fairing was installed, Jeff had a big smile and tunes were blasting everywhere. Also we noticed his gas mileage improved about ten miles per gallon, amazing! He hooked up the MP3 with ear plugs, and all his down loaded music, a nice feature!
Now add in the fact that he’s not being beaten up on the freeway anymore, and you have a happy guy. He did have some issues with helmet buffeting, so at present he’s trying different height windshields to see what happens. On my scale of 1 to 10, I give this a 10 for ease of install and overall quality of the fairing and components.
