ALL ENCOMPASSING BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for June 2, 2016

Hey,

I’ve discussed not giving up on anything, including the 5-Ball factory racer, and I’ve seen success. I went to Zack’s houseboat last weekend and we talked about motorcycles and chasing mechanical problems. A small electrical glitch in the headlight triggered his circuit breaker and killed the bike.

I’ll dig into my headlight. You never know. I recently changed out my cam for a slightly different JIMS cam. I checked the intake manifold for leaks by spraying around the seal between the heads and the manifold with even WD-40 or contact cleaner. Almost anything will change the idle if it’s leaking.

Let’s get to the news and I’ll report on more tech efforts. The Bikernet News is proudly sponsored by Cycle Source Magazine, Iron Trader, The esteemed Motorcycle Riders Foundation, ChopperTown, and Las Vegas Bike Fest.

THE 5-BALL LEATHERS Vintage Black Speedway Shirt is BUILT for RIDERS–

The 5-Ball Leathers’ Vintage Black Speedway Shirt is BUILT for RIDERS but it’s not for everyone. It’s constructed with super-soft premium lambskin leather and premium leather is not inexpensive. But for $345 you have something that they all want to touch and snuggle up with.

The stand-up collar doesn’t flap or bother your neck at racing speeds. The sleeves are longer than your non-riding apparel; ensuring your wrists are covered, comfortable and protected when you are behind your bars.

It features six pockets (including gun pockets deep enough for phones and cameras), quilted design on shoulders and upper sleeves and plaid lining.

Details at http://5ballracinggarage.com/product/vintage-black-speedway-shirt/

“As you know, I’m androgynous. I can wear a jacket that most guys wouldn’t put on. But you make it in guys’ sizes, and suddenly they’re wearing them. I think styles should get back to getting people to wear things that look so good that they don’t care.”

RED-LIGHT CAMERAS are the biggest local boondoggle ever–
Lafayette, Louisiana was recently in the news because the city-parish council decided to extend their red-light camera program another year despite the fact that $12.4 million dollars had not been collected on over 211,000 photo enforced tickets since the program’s inception nine years ago.

But the story has even a more twisted tale than just what appears on the surface. As of July 2013, Lafayette was owed just over $3 million in unpaid Redflex camera tickets. That year City-Parish Attorney Mike Herbert vowed to do something about the problem and enlisted 40 to 50 volunteer lawyers (who would receive one-third of what they could collect) to help him go after habitual offenders, including $46,000 from a single business. The city attorney uncovered the fact that he could collect on 10 years’ worth of fines instead of what everyone assumed was a three-year statute of limitations.

Herbert and his merry band of lawyers decided not to pursue offenders that owed less than $125 because the cost of filing fees might be more than recovery. On the other end of the scale, Herbert didn’t want to pursue scofflaws who owed more than $20,000 in fines and penalties because those lawsuits would have to be filed in state rather than city court.

At an April 2014 meeting, the Lafayette City-Parish Council decided along with Herbert to stand down on all the lawsuits because of the confusion it might cause by going after offenders who had outstanding tickets for more than three years. Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux noted that council members put a halt to the lawsuits in 2014 because they didn’t want to sue so many of their co-workers and neighbors.

Since 2013, the amount owed to the Lafayette City-Parish rose to $12.4 million, an increase of $9.4 million in three years. During that time, Lafayette has collected about $1.75 million a year in paid photo tickets, splitting the proceeds with Redflex on a roughly 55/45 basis and using the revenue to offset police department expenses. Also, in any of the news accounts concerning Lafayette City-Parish, the supposed safety aspects of the red-light camera program were never mentioned.

On May 17, 2016, the same day as the council meeting where the decision to extend the red-light program in Lafayette City-Parish was decided, the District Attorney Keith Stutes filed a lawsuit against the City-Parish government for not funding his office. Louisiana politics at its best!

At the same council meeting, Councilman William Theriot, opposed to the red-light camera program, asked the council to let city voters decide in November whether to continue with the traffic camera enforcement program. The council took no action on his proposal.

Lafayette City-Parish has over 182,000 adults over the age of 18 and approximately 160,000 registered drivers. Another city in a similar situation is San Mateo, California which lies in the middle of Silicon Valley. San Mateo has less of a population in the city proper than Lafayette City-Parish (approximately 74,000 adults over 18). Last week, the San Mateo City Council also decided to extend their red-light camera program. San Mateo has 5 cameras at three intersections that have nearly 21 million drivers passing through each year. The city issues an average of 13 red-light camera citations daily that are generally $490 per ticket, resulting in nearly $6400 of ticket revenue per day. The city apparently only receives 27.5% of the money from the fines. The rest goes for court fees and all the other fees tacked on by the state of CA to pay for stuff.

The city also has an undisclosed flat contract for services with Redflex. Last year, the city took in $229,000 and two years before that $340,000. Unfortunately, in last week’s meeting, few citizens spoke against extending the camera program unlike the past when many had protested the city contract.

The Hagerstown, Maryland City Council also decided last week that they will allow the police chief to explore adding red-light cameras to their existing 11-speed camera program. The police chief told the city council he was excited that the red-light cameras could also be used for surveillance.

Phoenix, AZ turned on their red-light cameras again last week after all red-light programs in the state were turned off in March after Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich released an opinion that third party contractors and their employees who operate photo radar and red-light cameras must get a private investigator license or they cannot do business in Arizona. Apparently, Redflex which operates in Phoenix and several other Arizona communities has complied with the ruling.

There is some good news though on the Red-Lights Camera Front—Marysville, CA will discontinue their program. Suffolk County, NY residents are fighting back against their community’s red-light program. Springfield, OH reports that a year after they discontinued their red-light camera program, they had no increase in crashes.

One step forward….one step at a time!

MIKUNI HSR45-5 Performance Carburetor Easy Kit–
Mikuni American’s popular HSR42mm Series Smoothbore Carburetors are available in easily installed “Easy Kits” for all late model Harley-Davidson and other American V-Twin applications.

Included are kits for 1990 to present 1340cc Big Twin engines, together with 1994 to present 1200cc Sportster and Buell S2 models. HSR42 Kits come complete with a properly jetted Mikuni HSR42 carburetor, installation instructions, and works with your stock throttle cables. Included is a special adapter that allows you to retain your stock airbox or use the higher flowing Screamin’ Eagle performance filter kit for an additional performance gain.

The HSR42 Mikuni flows more air at full throttle to produce more peak power than other carburetors with bigger venturi bores. While at smaller throttle openings the Mikuni’s smaller, yet higher velocity flowing venturi, together with its advance fuel metering system provides a stronger overall powerband with improved ridability.

On a stock engine without any other modifications you can expect the Mikuni HSR42 Carburetor Easy Kit to provide a significant 10% increase in power and torque, and up to a 25% increase in power and torque when matched to a higher flowing intake and exhaust system.

Mikuni HSR Carburetors and their Performance Features, Tuning Components, Replacement Parts and Rebuild Kits are available from Mikuni Dealers and Distributors in the USA and Worldwide as shown on www.MikuniPower.com.

And join Mikuni American at the 2016 LA Calendar Motorcycle Show on Saturday July 23rd.

FLT/FXR SWING ARM RETROFIT KIT–
Custom Cycle Engineering has developed a swing arm conversion kit that replaces the stock Cleve Bloc style swing arm bushings with spherical bearings. The conversion covers all the FLT and FXR models from 1980 to 2001.

This kit coincides with Harley Davidson’s change from the Cleve Bloc bushing to a spherical bearing in all the 2002 and up FLT models.

The conversion over to spherical bearings in the early models dramatically changes the handling and tracking of all the FLTs and FXRs.

The sticksion at the swing arm pivot is greatly reduced with the new spherical bearings. This allows for the swing arm to react quicker to any harsh road conditions keeping the wheel in contact with the road. The use of spherical bearings also helps negate any lateral and torsional movement in the swing arm by the shear dynamics of a spherical bearing.

The swing arm bearing conversion kit is a positive answer to the inherent ill handling problems of the popular Dresser models.

PANAMA PAPERS CONTROVERSAY MAY EXPLODE–
Mossack Fonseca’s U.S. operations cut back after Nevada penalty.

Panama law firm’s U.S. arm resigns from Nevada companies and loses its partner in Wyoming amid continued global scrutiny

Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca’s local affiliate in Nevada has resigned from more than 1,000 companies and paid a penalty to the state, while the law firm has also announced the closure of three of its international offices as the fallout from the Panama Papers investigation continues.

Nevada’s Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske announced in a statement on Monday that M.F. Corporate Services (Nevada), Mossack Fonseca’s local affiliate, had paid a $10,000 fine for failing to keep the required records and contact details for its clients. The penalty is the maximum allowed under the state’s laws.

Cegavske’s statement also revealed that the firm had abruptly resigned as registered agent from the 1,024 companies it administered in the state, a move that one expert told ICIJ partner McClatchy was “absolutely unusual.”

Mossack Fonseca’s operations in Wyoming, which were also operated out of the Nevada office, also faced a significant setback when its local Wyoming business partner cut all ties last week, leaving M.F. Corporate Services Wyoming with 60 days to find a new registered agent in the state, or face dissolution by the Wyoming Secretary of State’s office.

Beyond the U.S., the firm has announced the closure of three of its offices, and faces investigations in multiple jurisdictions.

LAW TIGERS SUPPORTS Rolling Thunder Ride For Freedom–
1988 to 2016 Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom Becomes One Million Strong

From a few hundred in 1988 to one million participants in 2016, Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom is a driving force of raising veterans awareness.

“Never forget all of our prisoners of war and those still missing in action from all wars, and never forget our veterans of all wars. That’s our message, and that’s our mission,” said Artie Muller the tremendous force behind Rolling Thunder, an American advocacy group that seeks to bring full accountability for prisoners of war (POWs) and missing in action (MIA) service members of all U.S. wars.

Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom occurs on the Sunday before Memorial Day in Washington, DC. Riders start lining up in the Pentagon parking lot as early as 5 am. At noon all participants make a slow ride on a dedicated route that crosses the Memorial Bridge leads to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.

It is the largest event in Washington, DC and the largest one-day event in the motorcycle industry. It is a demonstration with heart, passion and meaning. It is about our veterans. Of all wars of years past and of our current military members fighting over seas.

Fall 1987 An Epic Idea is Born

The Founders of Rolling Thunder®, Inc., Artie Muller and Ray Manzo, both Vietnam Veterans, were incensed that the government and the media were ignoring an estimated 10,000 reported sightings of live Americans living in horrible conditions in captivity. They realized their voices needed to be heard. They contacted fellow veterans, friends and family and decided to ‘ride’ to the nation’s Capital Memorial Day weekend in the spring of 1988. The roar of their motorcycles would announce their arrival. A roar not unlike the sound of 1965 bombing campaign against North Vietnam dubbed Operation Rolling Thunder. Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom was born.

The Ride for Freedom began in 1988 as a demonstration to help raise awareness of the POW/MIA issue. Rolling Thunder has grown to encompass many veteran issues and is still working to bring home our many POW/MIA’s.

Members come from all walks of life and include service men and women, fire fighters, police officers, anyone whom wishes to support our veterans. Old, young, men, women, veterans and non-veterans. All are united in the cause to bring full accountability for the Prisoners of War-Missing in Action (POW/MIA) of all wars, reminding the government, the media and the public by their watchwords: “We Will Not Forget.”

STREAMLINERS DISPLAY AT NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM– The Story of motorcycle land speed record competition

The National Motorcycle Museum at Anamosa, Iowa, (owned by John Parham of J&P Cycles fame) is to stage a new exhibition about motorcycle streamliners and the world land speed record, and has issued a call for exhibits.

In a recent announcement, the museum’s Special Projects Director Mark Mederski said that “the great Vincent tuner Rollie Free taught us that in land speed record runs, streamlining is of the utmost importance, even if that means simply “tucking in” one’s head, torso, arms and legs.

Land speed record competition is focused on top speed. Eclipsing Rollie’s roughly 150mph run in 1948, the big guns of the unlimited class are now knocking on the 400mph door, but watching the 50cc machines can be almost as exciting.”

To help record the history of land speed record competition, the technology involved, what it is like to squeeze into a land speed record motorcycle and hurtle down the Salt at 200, 300 or more miles per hour, the National Motorcycle Museum is in the research and planning phase for a new exhibit entitled Allstate Motorcycle STREAMLINERS presented by J&P Cycles. The exhibit is set to open June 4, 2016.

Many machines are already committed for display, but the Museum is looking for additional LSR bikes, including the Easyriders Streamliner, riding gear, film footage, models, photos, fine art, stories from tuners and riders and land speed record parts like engines, wheels, frames and more to help tell this exciting story.

THE COSTLY TRUTH of emergency spending in Iraq and Afghanistan
Despite troop reductions, the Pentagon’s war budget is increasing–

Eight years ago, when America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were still raging at full force, the Pentagon’s annual budget for those conflicts amounted to $1 million for each troop who was actually fighting. But today, even as the Obama Administration continues to wind those wars down, the newest proposed Pentagon war-fighting budget would spend $5.9 million per deployed troop, a reflection, critics say, of sleight of hand that puts unrelated spending into a budget that’s supposed to be only for waging war.

The figures come from a new report by the Stimson Center, a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank based in Washington D.C. The report highlights the amount of spending in the special war-fighting account that authors argue should instead be part of the basic year-to-year budgeting for the Defense Department.

The Obama administration has requested $58.8 billion for that war budget – the Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) fund—in fiscal year 2017. This represents a $200 million increase from the enacted budget in 2016 even though administration plans call for 9,767 troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2017, a reduction of roughly 3,500 troops from this year.

“The gulf between troop levels and OCO-designated spending has widened significantly in recent years,” Stimson fellow Laicie Heeley and intern Anna Wheeler write in the 20-page report released May 24. OCO includes a multitude of training efforts for Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, which the Stimson authors argue “no longer require emergency funding” because the initiatives are ongoing and can be easily anticipated year after year. “The funds are actually going to a larger amount of base budget needs,” said Heeley in an interview.

Since 2001, the Pentagon has been issued a separate check for these emergency war funds, which a variety of critics say have become an unnecessary “slush fund” for a multitude of unrelated defense and non-defense programs; the Overseas Contingency Operations label was inaugurated in 2009…

INNOVATORS LEAD THE CLASS OF 2016, STURGIS MUSEUM–
Bert Baker & Jerry Covington Highlight Sturgis Hall Of Fame Inductees.

A couple of inveterate tinkerers and V-Twin innovators lead the pack headed into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame Class of 2016. Both Bert Baker and Jerry Covington have made an indelible stamp on the industry and have “the right stuff” to meet the Museum’s criteria for inclusion in a select group of individuals who have impacted our industry.

“The Hall of Fame’s mission is to honor those who have made a positive and significant impact on the industry and the lifestyle,” says Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame Executive Director Myrick Robbins. “So it is fitting for our 15th Anniversary that we have Bert and Jerry headlining the Class of 2016 because both these gentlemen have definitively shaped the way we ride.”

When aspiring motocross racer and mediocre student Bert Baker enrolled in Michigan State University’s Mechanical Engineering program, little did he know the die had been cast for a unique career path. Although there was an obvious talent, Bert was not the model student nor an ideal employee at General Motors where he ended up after graduation due to the regimented requirements of these institutions. What he was suited for was being his own boss and racing headlong where others feared to tread.

Baker left behind a cushy career at GM to risk running his own business building a better motorcycle transmission – and motorcycling is better for it. A stalwart champion of the American-made movement, he’s an enthusiastic gearhead with far-reaching mechanical ability; we all benefit from Bert’s solutions to making his own bikes run better and faster. Bert is also a V-Twin drivetrain innovator, savvy businessman and stalwart patriot who has been described as having a pathological aversion to conformity. And what’s wrong with that?

“Designing innovation is what we do… The fact of the matter is that our industry was changed by BAKER,” claims Bert. “We were the first to develop an Overdrive 6-Speed, Right Side Drive, the 7-Speed and the first to incorporate Direct Drive. For more than a decade we have changed the face of the aftermarket motorcycle industry, and we’re really looking forward to the next ten years of changes we have up our sleeves.”

Like Baker, Jerry Covington has followed his own innate sense of what motorcycles should be, with a career spanning more than 40 years, Jerry is recognized as one of the top custom builders in the business. Having built his first chopper from the ground up at the ripe old age of 17, he realized early on that he “had an instinct” for just the right custom and performance modifications for both cars and motorcycles.

Born and raised in Texas, he built choppers through the ’70s and turned his hobby into a family business in 1993 with wife Kathleen and sons David, Dusty, Peewee and Cameron moved to California, where he quickly became immersed in the custom hot rod scene. Ultimately seeking a more laid-back environment, Jerry, with wife and business partner, Kathleen, moved to Woodward, OK, where he began to build custom motorcycles for friends.

His reputation and customer base continued to grow, and it wasn’t long before Covington’s Customs had created their own cult following. Performance is a factor in every build and details are tended: welds never show, lines flow, and rideability is paramount. But you’ll seldom hear much of this from Jerry, an unassuming man who lets his bikes do the talking and his actions speak for themselves. Look to the media where the Covington clan’s work has been prominent and their charity efforts praised. Over the years his company has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars building custom motorcycles for a wide range of charitable events.

In addition to Baker and Covington, three other equally deserving inductees are included in the Class of 2016.

The Class Of 2016

Bert Baker –
V-Twin motorcycle drivetrain innovator, businessman and patriot, Bert Baker is committed to using materials, labor, creativity, know-how and grit born of America.

Jerry Covington –
Whether it is on TV or the cover of virtually every biker magazine in the world, it is hard to miss custom builder Jerry Covington. What does get overlooked is Covington’s behind the scenes commitment to the motorcycle community, his selfless donation of time and resources to those less fortunate through has various charity projects.

John Penton –
One of the most influential figures in off-road motorcycling in the world, John Penton developed a legendary brand of motorcycles that bore his name (better known as KTM today). He also founded Hi-Point, an accessory and distribution company that had 50% of aftermarket sales in the U.S. and set the mold for modern distribution powerhouses like Parts Unlimited, Tucker Rocky and WPS.

Gary Spellman – Using motorcycle as means to further charitable causes, philanthropist Gary Spellman has been quite effective in utilizing motorcycles to raise money for charities benefiting first responders and their surviving families. He has also brought major business owners into the family of motorcyclists as well as creating the Peace, Love and Happiness Charity Ride with fellow Hall Of Famer John Paul Dejoria.

Buddy Stubbs –
Talk about being born into the business, Buddy Stubbs was raised in his father’s Harley dealership in Decatur, Illinois and has spent his entire life in and around dealerships, including opening two of his own in the greater Phoenix area. This year marks his 50th year as a dealer and more significantly an ambassador to the motorcycle lifestyle.

“Honor the Ride.  UNCLE MONKEY ON SPINNING WRENCHES–“Wow, that’s all it is?” It is a statement that gets muttered behind your back as you spin wrenches fixing another broken item. People who don’t know any better are always astounded at the simplicity of many everyday solutions.

The key is you know what you are doing—they don’t. Knowing what has to come apart and how it comes apart is a big part of fixing things. There is a certain aptitude to it. My son thought he would rebuild an old chainsaw. In a flurry of nuts and bolts he got the basic covers off, but like many, he ground to a halt. From raw talent there is hours of practice that feed into bringing familiarity to how things come apart and more importantly back together.

The previous owner of my trailer really did a number on the top front corner of the structure. It really helped ugly the unit up. Using leverage and a really big hammer I formed the general shape to return. From there I pulled off the damaged panels, so I could make new ones.

A couple out for an evening stroll were taken back by the bare skeleton of the front of the trailer. A few spindly bars, a sheet of plywood here, a cross member there is all that made it up, after the skin was peeled back. Trailer focus is on being light and not lugging thousands of pounds around, just a motorcycle or two if I really plan it out.

Where the simplicity breaks down is in the details. Looking at a motorcycle it is a frame, motor, transmission and a couple of wheels. It is the little things like wiring, micro switches, making sure oil lines are properly routed, gas lines are safe, exhaust system is strong and out of the way, etc. All the big things have little brackets holding them in place. Things are layered together misperceiving the eye.

The exhaust has to come off, then foot controls, then primary components and such before you can even begin to think about pulling a motor. But to the person looking over my shoulder that is all there really is to it.

Driver accused in road rage crash that injured motorcyclists faces attempted murder charges–A driver accused of running over a motorcyclist in Lutz in a fit of road rage faces upgraded charges of attempted murder.

Robert Vance, 31, remained in jail Tuesday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. His bond is set at $115,000.

The crash occurred about 5:35 p.m. Monday near County Line Road and Land O’Lakes Boulevard in Pasco County.

Cellphone video shows what appears to be a driver deliberately plow down two people on a motorcycle. Vance was initially charged with aggravated battery.

One of the motorcyclists, Joseph Calderazzo, said Vance was driving erratically moments before the crash.

Calderazzo said Vance was driving angrily and had cut off another motorcyclist in their group, coming within a foot of them.

They all traveled in the southbound lanes of County Line Road and all stopped at a red light.

“He (Vance) had the window down, he was yelling at us, we were yelling at him and all of the sudden, he put the car in reverse about two feet, turned the wheel and just ran right over us,” Calderazzo said. “As soon as I saw those wheels turn towards me, I knew this was going south very very quickly.”

Calderazzo said Vance sped off, leaving him and his passenger in the road.

Panicked drivers soon started calling 911.

“Somebody just got ran over by a bike,” one caller shouted to emergency operators. “It was a crazy driver!”

Calderazzo now has a broken leg.

“I think we’re just lucky to only have some broken bones and scrapes and bruises,” he said.

Vance has a criminal past that included burglary, battery and drug possession charges.

Calderazzo now hopes the justice system will keep Vance off the road.

“What he’s going to do in the future is what I care about. I don’t want him to be able to do this to somebody else,” he said.

The famous Agajanian #98, driven by rookie Alexander Rossi, and co-owned by Agajanian, won the 2016 Indy 500, the 100th running of the race. The 26 year old, from Auburn, California, coasted across the finish line with an empty fuel tank.

Chris Agajanian is on Cloud 98. He said, “It was an indescribable feeling walking, or should I say, running to the winners circle. After Rossi poured milk on Herta and Andretti, he turned to me, and decided to not pour milk on me, and just handed me the milk bottle, which is not sitting on my desk with dried milk all over it.”

Congrats from all the Trailblazers.

Bikernet Road Stories: Oaxaca Adventure

I love Scotty’s tales. A life style that I am envious of (in a good way). I have one more month of work, with a long weekend to shoot up to the Redwoods Run, and then I will be retired. I intend to try some time on the road, no agenda, no time frame. I just hope I can unwind and make friends like Scotty does.

STEALTH REPORTS FROM ROLLING THUNDER–
Went back to Virginia this past Memorial Day weekend for Rolling Thunder. Good to see my brothers and their families and also good to see my old riding brothers I grew up with.

While sitting around shooting the breeze, the subjects of bikes came up. To be more specific, how do I afford to have four bikes? Now my riding brothers never questioned this, but the guy, who brought it up, kinda rubbed me the wrong way. So to counter this I brought up the subject of “FOCUS.”

Just a couple of weeks ago we talked about this. I told him I owned those bikes because I was focused. He looked at me with a blank stare.

He went on to say how expensive insurance was, how expensive bikes were, you know, the same old BS we always hear. So, while engaging in this conversation, I noticed the guy smoked one cigarette right after the other and drank one beer right after the other.

Noticing this, I asked him two questions, “How much do you spend on cigarettes per month?” After a second or two of thought he said about $400 per month! And I asked how much on alcohol per month, and he says another $300-$400 per month!!!!! So add those two amounts together and what do you get $700–$800!!!

That would be enough for two bike payments and insurance for both, with money left over! I just smiled and said remember what I said about, “FOCUS!” I don’t light a match to $400 a month and I don’t drink away another $400 a month, both of which destroy your body!

Oh well to each his own!

VICTORY MOTORCYCLES AND WILLIAM DUNLOP TEAM FOR THE ISLE OF MAN SES TT ZERO

Dunlop ready to tackle “some unfinished business” on the Victory RR electric racer

William has been having great road racing results all season and the 30-year-old is making his ambition very clear for this year’s Isle of Man TT; he’s looking for a win, in particular on-board the all-new electric Victory RR.

“I’m very happy that Victory has decided to return to the TT,” said William, who was part of Victory’s inaugural TT Zero race team with Lee Johnston in 2015. “I had a good time on my first ride with the electric bike last year, and I’m looking forward to getting another chance to race as I only got one lap of the course due to my accident in an earlier race. I feel as though there’s some unfinished business to take care of this year in the TT Zero race.”

William adds: “Compared to last year’s Empulse RR the new Victory RR has more battery on-board, which should allow us to go faster. With Mugen and Sarolea also bringing all new bikes this year, it will be interesting to see how all this new technology stacks up against each other. Most of all, I’m looking forward to spending more time on the bike during the TT Zero practice sessions and actually competing in the race.”

“I haven’t followed the development of electric bikes too closely other than what Victory Motorcycles has been doing to bring a competitive bike to the TT this year. Watching the pace of development for these electric bikes has been impressive for sure, but as a rider, it’s just another motorcycle to race and try to win on – which probably says the most about how far they’ve come.”

The first practice for the SES TT Zero is scheduled for Friday 3rd June at 20:40 with second practice on Saturday 4th June at 17.15 and a final qualifying session on Monday 6th June at 16:25. The race is scheduled for 16:25 on Wednesday 8th June.

SHORAI ON VOLTAGE REGULATORS—
We have a collection of information which provides an overview of both the mosfet and thyristor type voltage regulators. If using a thyristor type voltage regulator and it fails, upgrading to a mosfet based voltage regulator will offer longer lifespan and better charging system performance.

Heat buildup in the voltage regulator kills the SCRs, whereas mosfets are more efficient and reliable. In general the mosfet design is better suited for the voltage regulator application demands.

Maintaining the Shorai LFX battery above 13.3V will help to reduce stress on the voltage regulator because the charged time to reach 14.4V will be relatively short. If the battery is at 13.1V ~50% SOC or 12.86V~20% SOC this will result in higher voltage regulator temperatures.

For the complete Shorai tech, check back with us at the first of the week. Bikernet will publish the whole tamale.–Wrench

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRAY HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS–

A group of men live and die for their Saturday morning golf game. One transferred to another city and they’re lost without him.

A new woman joins their Club. When she hears the guys talking about their golf round, she says, “I played on my college’s golf team. I was pretty good. Mind if I join you next week?”

No one wants to say ‘yes’, but they’re on the spot. Finally, one man says, “Okay, but we start at 6:30 am.” He figures the early tee-time will discourage her.

The woman says this may be a problem, and asks if she can be up to 15 minutes late. They roll their eyes, but say, “Okay.”

She’s there at 6:30 am sharp, and beats all of them with an eye-opening 2-under-par round.

She’s fun and pleasant, and the guys are impressed. They congratulate her and invite her back the next week. She smiles, and says, “I’ll be there at 6:30 or 6:45.”

The next week she again shows up at 6:30 sharp. Only this time, she plays left-handed.

The three guys are incredulous as she still beats them with an even-par round, despite playing with her off-hand.

They’re totally amazed. They can’t figure her out. She’s very pleasant and a gracious winner. They invite her back again, but each man harbors a burning desire to beat her.

The third week, she’s 15 minutes late, which irritates the guys. This week she plays right-handed, and narrowly beats all three of them.

The men grumble that her late arrival is petty gamesmanship on her part. However, she’s so charming and complimentary of their strong play, they can’t hold a grudge.

This woman is a riddle no one can figure out. They have a couple of beers in the Clubhouse, and finally, one of the men asks her, “How do you decide if you’re going to golf right-handed or left-handed?”

The lady blushes, and grins. “When my Dad taught me to play golf, I learned I was ambidextrous,” she replies. “I like to switch back and forth. “When I got married after college, I discovered my husband always sleeps in the nude. From then on, I developed a silly habit. Right before I leave in the morning for golf practice, I pull the covers off him.

If his willie points to the right, I golf right-handed; if it points to the left, I golf left-handed.”

The guys think this is hysterical.

Astonished at this bizarre information, one of the guys says, “What if it’s pointing straight up?”

She says, “Then, I’m fifteen minutes late.”

SCOTTOILER INTRODUCES Off-Road bike protector spray–
Motorcycle chain oiler manufacturer Scottoiler has introduced a new protector spray specifically targeted to the off-road community. The product, labelled TMX 365, is formulated to protect the bike during the ride and make cleaning easier afterwards.

TMX 365 does not contain Silicone or PTFE and is readily biodegradable. According to Scottoiler, TMX 365 satisfies a market demand for an easy-to-apply ride protection that also makes post-ride cleaning less of a chore.

The new product is based on the popular FS 365 protector spray, it offers robust protection from the environment, and eases the cleaning process. TMX 365 leaves no sticky residue and is water-soluble, so any dirt or mud can be easily washed off solely with water.

The new product was launched at the Scottish Six Days Trial in Fort William and received a lot of interest from riders and visitors alike. Both Trials legend Gary MacDonald and up-and-coming rider Ben Dignan are using TMX 365 Off-Road Protection on their trials bikes.

TMX 365 has a recommended retail price of £8.99 for 1 litre and £34.99 for 5 litres

BIKERNET GUN NUT REPORT–
California: Assembly Passes Five Anti-Gun Bills Continuing the Assault on Your Rights.

Today, June 1, the state Assembly leadership used a procedural move called “without reference to file” to move four anti-gun bills, AB 1664, AB 1673, AB 1674 and AB 1695 , from the second reading file to the third reading file. This move allowed final Assembly consideration without notice to the public of their eligibility for a vote. The result was the passage of these four bills along with AB 2607, which already appeared on the third reading calendar. So much for allowing citizen participation in the law making process.

These five anti-gun bills will now move to the Senate for further consideration. For further descriptions on these bills, please click here to read our previous alert.

Thank you to NRA members and Second Amendment supporters who have contacted their Assembly Members and to those state Assembly Members who supported the Second Amendment and voted against AB 1664, AB 1673, AB 1674, AB 1695, and AB 2607.

Please stay tuned to www.nraila.org and your email inbox for further updates on Second Amendment related legislation as the 2016 legislative session progresses.

WHOA DOGGY—
This is the year for major accomplishments and it’s non-stop action. We will attend, with 5-Ball Racing Leathers Bartels’ Chili Cook-off, and then Born Free. I’m planning my ride to Sturgis along Route 66 to the 25 north into Deadwood. Shortly after the rally we will hit the Las Vegas Bikefest big time.

Then it’s whiskey, a redhead and football games into the holidays.

But coming right up we will bring you a new classic Triumph feature from Peter Linney. I’m working on a MetalSport feature on their growing product line. They have a 4-Axis CNC machine capable of turning a 45-inch wheel. What do you think Paul Yaffe?

I need to wrap up a seat tech with Saddlemen. We will bring you Redwood Run reports, and I have a pre-Harley antique bike feature coming to the Cantina. The action and adventures are constant.

Keep them coming.

And ride free forever, goddammit!
