HEAT WAVE BIKETOBERFEST THURSDAY NEWS

Hey,

I’ve got a notion stirring around in my feeble mind. The economy is piss poor, but the passion for toys and freedom never dies. So what can guys (and girls) do when times are tough, and we feel our freedoms slipping away–build and ride motorcycles, goddamnit.

A brother may not be able to buy a Ferrari, but he can afford a motorcycle and jump into the wind. I’ve often said Motorcycles are the last bastion of freedom in this country, but those two-wheels represent more than freedom for bikers. They represent the fight for freedom everywhere. They are a symbol of freedom, and the fight to maintain freedom in all aspects of our lives.

At least we can hope that motorcycling, in all forms, will be the specter of freedom forever more, and it works, goddamnit. Let’s hit the news.

MAJOR REMODEL KICKS OFF AT THUNDERBIRD HARLEY-DAVIDSON–

in Albuquerque, N.M., is getting ready for a major remodel, a project that will start this month and should be finished next March.

The parking lot will be expanded to nearly double its size to allow for bigger events and more customer parking. Next, the service department will be revamped with new bays and lighting.

The final phase will build a new showroom entrance, modify the bathrooms, add a café area, and create a new meeting room for the training facility. The main building reportedly will be completely transformed, including a new aesthetic with updated lighting and graphics.

“We are so excited to see this project get started and can’t wait for the finished result,” says Thunderbird GM Glo Cuiffi. “These changes will benefit our customers, making it easier to visit, get service work done and shop, plus it will be a fresh new look and environment for everyone to enjoy.”

Thunderbird Harley-Davidson is at 5000 Alameda Boulevard in Albuquerque and can be reached at 505- 856-1600.

DYNA PROJECT–
Here is a shot of my Dyna I just painted and bought these great chinese plastic saddlebags for 100 dollars. They are fully lined with hard plastic backs. They were throw-over with zippers and double velcro but I made them bolt on.

The brown bike is the old ’81FLT that I owned around three years ago. It went through three other owners and the present one looked me up to see if I could get it running for him. It was originally a Shovel and I put the Evo in it in 1993 in Vegas when Bob Applegate had it.

This time I upgraded to an ’86 primary and clutch assy. The early five-speed sits 1/2 inch to the left of the ’86, so I used a ½-inch offset engine sprocket and primary spacer and installed the longer ’86 style mainshaft in the ’81 trans. I also had to drill and tap one primary mounting hole in the trans. As far as I know no one has ever done a conversion like that.

They told me it couldn’t be done but it works great. Also, I may be the first to use FXR struts on an FLT. The seat is a Dyna badlander.

CALIFORNIA DREAM ACT SIGNED–
Jerry Brown signs ‘California Dream Act’ into law.
By Peter Bowes BBC News, Los AngelesThe governor of California, Jerry Brown, has signed into law legislation allowing illegal immigrants to receive state aid to attend college.

Supporters of the California Dream Act, as it is called, say it will benefit the state economically.

However, critics argue that it condones entry into the US without proper documentation.

About 2,500 students are expected to qualify for grants under the new legislation.

Governor Brown, a Democrat, said the law would benefit the state by giving top students a chance to improve their lives and, he said, “the lives of all of us.”

But, in a state with a huge immigrant population, critics say the law encourages the illegal immigration by granting access to state resources previously reserved for legal residents.

Opponents of the law add that it should not have been passed without major overhaul of America’s immigration rules.

California’s last governor, the Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger, refused to sign the legislation.

JOE vs. JOSE, THE IMMIGRATION DEBATE–

You have two families: “Joe Legal” and “Jose Illegal”. Both families have two parents, two children, and live in California .

Joe Legal works in construction, has a Social Security Number and makes $25.00 per hour with taxes deducted.

Jose Illegal also works in construction, has NO Social Security Number, and gets paid $15.00 cash “under the table”.

Ready? Now pay attention….

Joe Legal: $25.00 per hour x 40 hours = $1000.00 per week, or $52,000.00 per year. Now take 30% away for state and federal tax; Joe Legal now has $31,231.00.

Jose Illegal: $15.00 per hour x 40 hours = $600.00 per week, or $31,200.0 0 per year. Jose Illegal pays no taxes. Jose Illegal now has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal pays medical and dental insurance with limited coverage for his family at $600.00 per month, or $7,200.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $24,031.00.

Jose Illegal has full medical and dental coverage through the state and local clinics and emergency hospitals at a cost of $0.00 per year. Jose Illegal still has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal makes too much money and is not eligible for food stamps or welfare. Joe Legal pays $500.00 per month for food, or $6,000.00 per year. Joe Legal now has $18,031.00.

Jose Illegal has no documented income and is eligible for food stamps, WIC and welfare. Jose Illegal still has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal pays rent of $1,200.00 per month, or $14,400.00 per year. Joe Legal now has 9,631 .00.

Jose Illegal receives a $500.00 per month Federal Rent Subsidy. Jose Illegal pays out that $500.00 per month, or $6,000.00 per year. Jose Illegal still has $ 31,200.00.

Joe Legal pays $200.00 per month, or $2,400.00 for car insurance. Some of that is uninsured motorist insurance. Joe Legal now has $7,231.00.

Jose Illegal says, “We don’t need no stinkin’ insurance!” and still has $31,200.00.

Joe Legal has to make his $7,231.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline, etc..

Jose Illegal has to make his $31,200.00 stretch to pay utilities, gasoline, and what he sends out of the country every month..

Joe Legal now works overtime on Saturdays or gets a part time job after work.

Jose Illegal has nights and weekends off to enjoy with his family.

Joe Legal’s and Jose Illegal’s children both attend the same elementary school. Joe Legal pays for his children’s lunches, while Jose Illegal’s children get a government sponsored lunch. Jose Illegal’s children have an after school ESL program. Joe Legal’s children go home.

Now, when they reach college age, Joe Legal’s kids may not get into a State School and may not qualify for scholarships, grants or other tuition help, even though Joe has been paying for State Schools through his taxes, while Jose Illegal’s kids “go to the head of the class” because they are a minority.

Joe Legal and Jose Illegal both enjoy the same police and fire services, but Joe paid for them and Jose did not pay.

The 2012 Grand National Roadster Show presents the “Spirit of Rett”–
On September 21, 2010 Dallas based racer and businessman Charles Nearburg broke the 45-year old land-speed record with his Red Line Oil-equipped “Spirit of Rett” streamliner. The fast and sleek car averaged a speed of 414. 5 mph, beating the previous record set in 1965 by the Summers Brothers “Goldenrod,” by a little over six mph. In addition, Nearburg also set the fastest single-engine car record.

Nearburg’s son Rett passed away on January 14, 2005 at the age of 22 from a long battle of a rare cancer known as Ewing’s Sarcoma. A year after his death, Nearburg bought the now famous streamliner, and named it in Rett’s honor. “He lived joyously and passionately, full of humor, wisdom and grace,” said Nearburg. In addition to racing and his side job as a businessman, Nearburg also donates a significant amount of time and money to fight the battle against cancer. After breaking the long undefeated record in late September, Nearburg said “this effort is dedicated to Rett and all the children fighting cancer.”

Not even a year after his triumphant accomplishment, a determined Nearburg beat two of his own records on August 25, 2011 on the notorious salt flats in Western Utah during the Bonneville SpeedWeek. The first of his victories was A/GS for gasoline-fueled, naturally-aspirated streamliners with less than 500 cubic-inches, and was set at 352.8mph. The second record was A/FS with the same engine running with nitrous (putting it in the “fuel” class), set at 379.6mph.

“Spirit of Rett” now has the following accomplishments:

Fastest single engine car record in history 414.316 MPH (and only 3mph less than the absolute fastest “real car” record of 417.020 MPH held by Tom Burkland)
Fastest normally aspirated car in history (Broke 45 year old record set by Summer’s Bros. “Goldenrod” on Nov 12, 1965)
First and only un-blown single engine car over 400 MPH
First and only car to ever set two over 300 MPH records in one day
First and only car to ever hold all four of the fastest un-blown records at Bonneville at the same time! A/FS 348.524 MPH, A/GS 350.728 MPH, AA/GS 368.136 MPH, AA/FS 392.503 MPH
First and only car to ever hold the two fastest un-blown FIA records at the same time

The “Spirit of Rett” will be on display at the Grand National Roadster Show January 27-29, 2012.

DYNA S TECH COMING TO BIKERNET–
I put that distributor together with the new Dyna S single fire, dual plug system from Biker’s Choice, got it all dialed it, then it wouldn’t spin in the distributor case we had, so I drove the pin out of the drive gear. I had to face the bushing. Then I put it all together and it wouldn’t fit in the engine, too tall. I had to completely strip it down to the shaft to fit under the head. Then the body was .080 larger diameter than the previous body and hit the barrel fins. I pulled it out and ground the fins. I fitted it again, ground some more, filed and replaced, again and again until it fit. That was enough for one evening. It was complete and in place.

The next day I wired it and prepared for timing with your instructions. Problem was I couldn’t find a compression stroke. I finally pulled the pushrod covers and the pushrods weren’t moving in the front cylinder. Then nothing in the rear. We pulled the cam cover. We evidently sheared the pinion gear key. The distributor was probably fine.

Hang on as we install the Dyna S electronic ignition. It is supposed to be the most resilient, distributor (with advance weights) ignition system and capable of handling heat and various voltage levels.

AMA News & Notes – November 2011–
AMA News & Notes is a monthly publication compiled and edited by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Government Relations Department. Designed to inform motorcyclists of rights-related issues and events around the world, AMA News & Notes welcomes your input. Suggestions and editorial contributions can be sent to AMA Western States Representative Nick Haris by email at nharis@ama-cycle.org.
Protect your right to ride! Volunteering is easier than you think, and it’s the right thing to do. To learn how you can help, visit us online at www.AmericanMotorcyclist.com.

Washington D.C.: Former two-term U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard of Colorado has joined the AMA as vice president for government relations. Allard, who represented Colorado during three terms in Congress and two terms in the U.S. Senate from 1991 to 2009, said he is looking forward to his new role.
Born and raised in Colorado, Allard has a long history of serving the people of that state and of the nation, first as a member of the state Senate from 1983 to 1991, then as a congressman from 1991 to 1997 and finally as a U.S. senator from 1997 to 2009.
While in the Senate, Allard was a co-sponsor of the James Peak Wilderness Bill that created a 14,000-acre Wilderness area around the 13,294-foot-high James Peak Mountain in Colorado. The legislation followed the federal definition of Wilderness established by Congress in 1964, addressed the concerns of a variety of stakeholders while at the same time preserving property, water and other rights, and ultimately protected land crucial to Colorado’s watershed.

Ontario, Calif.: Recently, leaders from many of the California OHV groups met with representatives from the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and other members of the Twentynine Palms base expansion committee. The purpose of the meeting was to engage in a dialog and get a status update regarding the Draft Environmental Impact Study (DEIS).

According to a USMC spokesperson, the final base expansion EIS is scheduled for release in January 2012. A response to previously received public comments will be included in the Final EIS. Barring any significant challenges or related delays, the Final Record of Decision is expected by April 2012. From there, the EIS will be submitted to the U.S. Department of the Interior and then it must be submitted to, and approved by, Congress. No estimated time frame for those actions was provided.

Sacramento, Calif.: Recently, the AMA testified before a U.S. House subcommittee about difficulties related to holding motorcycling events on U.S. Forest Service land.

The AMA testified that restrictions and requirements for special events, as well as the increasing costs of obtaining special use permits, are creating hardships. The AMA also said that riders have felt left out of the processes for developing new travel management plans for public land, and are frustrated that established routes have been omitted from travel management route maps.

The field hearing was convened by the Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands to investigate ongoing issues with the management of the nation’s national forests as well as to attempt to identify potential administrative or legislative remedies to address obstacles to the multiple use of public land.

Besides the AMA, other panel members included representatives from the Forest Service, state and local officials and citizens.

Boston: In October, 15 insurance companies that had settled with the state attorney general for allegedly overcharging policy holders began refunding nearly $40 million in excessive motorcycle insurance premiums. The attorney general alleged that the companies had based premiums on inflated motorcycle values. Any riders who bought comprehensive and/or collision insurance on a motorcycle after January 2002 may be entitled to a refund.

Lansing, Mich.: House Bill 4885 (R-DeWitt), would prohibit the state, any agency of the state, or any political subdivision of the state from imposing a vehicle-miles-traveled tax, mileage-based user fee, global-positioning-satellite-based toll, or similar program that would allow the locational tracking of a private motor vehicle or its users.

Also, the state and its political subdivision would also be prohibited from accepting any grants or fund to implement a pilot project for such a program.

Columbus, Ohio: Motorcycle handlebars could be any height as long as the height doesn’t adversely affect the ability of the operator to operate the motorcycle safely under House Bill 316, introduced by Rep. Cliff Rosenberger

(R-Clarksville). The current handlebar height restriction is no more than 15 inches above the seat or saddle of the operator.

Pickerington, Ohio: Utilize AMA public service announcements (PSAs) featuring AMA Board member and actor Perry King. The print, video and audio PSAs are available free to the media and the public to distribute and promote. The PSAs address impaired riding, excessive motorcycle exhaust sound, the importance of the proper safety gear, and responsible and safe off- highway riding. They also deliver an important message to drivers to watch for motorcyclists on the road. To access the PSA messages, visit: www.americanmotorcyclist.com/Rights/Resources/PublicServiceAnnouncements.aspx

Pickerington, Ohio: The on- and off-highway motorcycle sound resources page has been revamped on the AMA website. This includes information about Sound Advice, a document that addresses the excessive motorcycle sound issue, a video explanation of how to sound test a motorcycle, model legislation and more.

Since its inception in 1924, the AMA has maintained a position of strong opposition to excessive motorcycle sound. The AMA has funded information and public relations campaigns in support of quieter motorcycle use, and was the world’s first motorsports sanctioning body to regulate and reduce the sound level of racing vehicles.

Harrisburg, Pa.: Senate Bill 1232, sponsored by Sen. Timothy J. Solobay (D-Canonsburg), would modify the definition of a motorcycle by allowing the addition of two stabilizing wheels on the rear of the motor vehicle. Currently, a motorcycle is defined as a motor vehicle having a seat or saddle for use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground.

BIKERNET BLACK MARKET BOOK STORE BOOK OF THE WEEK IS:
Not a Motorcycle Book–If your garage houses a motorcycle, it’s also likely that a four wheeled hot rod shares that same building. And if that four-wheeler is in need of some wiring work, this is the book you need.

Let Hot Rod Wiring from Wolfgang Publications helps you pick the best components, the appropriate harness kit, and install everything yourself. Whether it’s an old skool ’32 Ford with a flathead for power, or a modern kustom with fuel injected V-8 and a set of airbags, the information needed to wire that hot rod can be found between the covers of Hot Rod Wiring. The electrical components used on modern hot rods have changed over the years. The stereo systems draw more power, and the number of accessories goes up and up. Hot Rod Wiring reflects these changes, and helps the reader determine how to pick components and design the best electrical system. Covering 144 pages, this book includes a theory chapter on direct current electricity, another on adding circuits to power those new accessories, a discussion of the various harness kits, three start-to-finish installations, and a trouble-shooting chapter.

This brand new Wiring book is only $17.95 to Bikernet members, way better than the normal retail of $27.95. Enjoy free shipping as well for anyone in the continental US. You want the smoke to come from the back tires, not from under the dash. Buy a copy of Hot Rod Wiring and give that four-wheeler an electrical upgrade.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY–
I was in bed with a blind girl last night and she said that I had the biggest penis she had ever laid her hands on. I said “You’re pulling
my leg.”

I saw a poor old lady fall over today on the ice!! At least I presume she was poor – she only had $1.20 in her purse.

My girlfriend thinks that I’m a stalker. Well, she’s not exactly my girlfriend yet.

OCTOBER is a month of change–
Changes in the leaves, changes in the weather, changing the fluids in our bikes. Many of us are coming to grips with the changing of the seasons as we start to batten down the hatches in preparation of the cold winter that will grip us.

It means prepping our bike for cold storage, maybe tearing her down for a rebuild. We weigh the time between now and then – a few more rides on a few more days. It is also a time of year to be thankful of everything that we’ve accomplished, thankful for the things that finally let go and let us move on. We are thankful for our freedoms and thankful for our right to fight for those that we lost. The world changes around us. EFI, ABS, iPads and talking to people around the world but in the end we are the ones who never change who we are.

Personally I hate the coming winter. While others are looking forward to snowmobiling and ??? I’m dreading the dead cold. Winter in Saskatchewan means days on end of -40 weather. For my friends south of the border -40 is -40 no matter what scale you are looking at. It is cold. It prompts me to pull up stakes and head south to find another job or perhaps take up roost helping my friend Bandit stay on top of things.

Some place warm where I can ride my bike year round or just sit on a beach or at the Chowder Barge and watch the tides roll in and out as I share stories with new friends and old. Still I’m thankful for the things I have here – my children and my granddaughter to name a few. I am also very lucky to have a good paying job and great boss with the possibility of buying into the company. Stability, security, familiarity. Maybe it will all come down to a flip of a coin.

Many of you are in the same figurative boat as me. Looking into a mirror the smiling innocent face of our youth is no longer staring back at us. Oh he still in there. We may have a few more aches and pains but we still feel like we are in our twenties. The world is still out there with new frontiers to conquer, more money to be made, more hearts to be broken.

Maybe it means a new bike, maybe just a new leather jacket, maybe a new adventure. But there still are the pangs of guilt and trepidation. Few things are more comfortable then our favourite stretch of road on our old Harley, faded blue jeans and weathered leathers. The grass maybe greener but someone still has to cut it.

October is a month for being thankful and for discovering new worlds. Wherever this road of life takes you know that the brothers and sisters share that highway with you.

–bad Uncle Monkey

AB 695 modifies the current helmet law to allow riders the right to choose whether to wear a helmet or not if they are over 18 and have either

1.) completed a motorcycle training program (that complies with section 2932) or,

2.) Have been issued a class M1 license or endorsement, or a comparable license from another jurisdiction, for two years or more.

(This one should probably be voted on in the beginning of January. )

AB 1047:

AB 1047 (Author Jefferies) is a bill that supposedly will end up as a bill prohibiting “Motorcycle Only Checkpoints”. Right at the moment, it does not contain any wording to that effect. Supposedly the bill will first be heard in the Assembly on January 9th, and according to our Lobbyist and Assemblyman Jefferies office, supposedly the wording shown below, or something like it will be added to the Bill several days before the vote.

Assembly Bill 1047:

1. Will prohibit the use of any federal, state or other highway safety funds to be used for selective motorcycle enforcement violations, but instead, to be used for their intended purpose of motorcycle safety training and education and motorist awareness of motorcyclists.

2. Will prohibit any law enforcement agency to have a motorcycle “safety” enforcement program that targets and profiles motorcyclists as a “group.” This bill will prohibit motorcycle-only stops.

3. An additional requirement would be to have any state law enforcement department or agency that chooses to accept grant money from federal sources, California (OTS), cities or counties to use a portion of that money received to compile a certified monthly report, listing the number of motorcycles stopped and cited, and the number of other vehicles stopped, warned or cited to be submitted to the Senate and Assembly Transportation Committee for their assessment of the law enforcement
agencies’ compliance with 2. and 3 above.

REPORT FROM J’WITZ BONNEVILLE TEAM RIDER–
Way back in February my father and I decided that we were going to race at Bonneville this year. About that time Ron Levesque came on board at Perewitz as our service manager. He immediate said, “I’m in! I want to be involved.” With a lot of knowledge of motors and power, within the next few months we decided he would be our crew chief.

This adventure being sort of mine and Perewitz I wanted to give our race team a different name but some how keep the Perewitz name involved. So Team J’Witz (a nickname I have been called) was formed! I then designated number 264 which was the street number of the house I grew up at! Our team was starting to materialize! Now all we needed was two wheels that could launch me into the 200s!

After many late hours in the shop 264 came to life! The motorcycle is constructed with a Daytec frame, Baker transmission, 100 ci R&R engine using some modified JIM’s components, Performance Machine wheels, brakes and controls, a ProCharger and some bright PPG paint!

In mid July we had our first race in Maine. We headed to Loring I had honestly never ridden a motorcycle with a ProCharger or a bike with 200+ horsepower, but boy was I excited to get her wheels turning. At that point we didn’t have a fairing or body on 264. By the end of the weekend I was a land speed record holder! I set a record going 164 mph.

Once back at the shop, Jason and Mike (guys in the shop) immediately started on mounting the body. They worked day and night to get it fitting and mounted strong enough to withstand speeds of 200+ mph. The bike was completed about an hour before the truck had to leave for the Bub Speed Trials.

By the 2nd day on the salt I had made friends with the salt gods, and I think they liked me and my machine! Day 3 on the salt, Tuesday, Team J’witz set a land speed record on the salt at 188.911mph. Wahoooo!

This was only one of 2 goals set out by our team. We wanted to set a land speed record as well as go over 200mph. Land speed records are not separated by male and female. Motorcycles are built for certain classes regardless of the gender of the rider. Wednesday August 31, I took 264 to the next goal. I made a pass at 203.111 mph! This speed made me the first woman in history to go over 200 on an American V-Twin!

The course at Bonneville that Team J’Witz rode on is a 5.5 mile course. I had 2.5 miles to get up to speed, then the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) clocks your speed for a mile and you have a 1.5 miles to slow down. On my 200 run I entered the mile going 199 mph and exited the mile at 205 mph. The 203.111 mph is the average speed in the mile. 264 and I were going 200+ mph for over a mile!

Taking pride that our team bike was built with American power and products this was a huge accomplishment. Perewitz business has been based on American motorcycles for almost 40 years!

Be sure to follow Team J’Witz on Facebook, www.facebook.com/teamjwitz

Till next year…

BIKERNET CONTRIBUTOR FLIES IN FOR HALLOWEEN–
And brings us an epic drama on the history of motorcycling.

“About the attached story,” Paul said. “I don’t think I sent this mega-bike history to you before so please take a look. It’s over 7500 words so you might want to break up into sections or whatever.”

“Someday maybe a part of a book since I literally have like one million words worth of stories and photos.”

“Please send mega-money ASAP. Grant, my son, just racked up a $3000 dental bill. Meanwhile, I haven’t been able to go to the dentist for a year and can only chew on one side of my mouth. He does come first.  But he’s in his senior year so the end is in sight. As to what world he’ll be stepping into, I don’t know and what he plans to do is yet to be determined.
I suggested the Coast Guard but was not well received. I would join if they would take me, but I sink like a rock and can’t swim very well.”

BIKERNET DR. WEIL, ELEVATED TO BIKERNET CHEF–
10 Veggies to Have on Hand, Part 1Vegetables (and fruits) are the foundation of my Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid, and for good reason – fresh produce is the best source of natural nutrients that can help keep your entire body running smoothly. I recommend every healthy kitchen have the following versatile and flavorful favorites on hand:

1. Onions: This classic, pungent vegetable adds depth and richness to any meal. Allicin, a phytonutrient found in most varieties of onions, may be responsible for its health benefits, including the possible lowering of cholesterol and blood pressure.
2. Garlic: This fragrant bulb contains many of the same phytonutrients as onions, as well as antibiotic and antiviral compounds. It may help boost the immune system, prevent colds, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and fight fungal or yeast infections.
3. Spinach: This dark leafy green (and others like it, such as kale and collards) contains lutein and zeaxanthin, antioxidant carotenoids that may help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration. Spinach is also a source of calcium and folate, a B vitamin that helps to prevent birth defects. Buy organic spinach, since pesticides are commonly used on conventionally grown varieties.
4. Cabbage: This low-cost yet highly nutritious cruciferous vegetable contains nutrients called indoles, which may protect against both breast and prostate cancer. It also provides significant amounts of fiber and vitamin C.
5. Sweet potatoes: Rich in beta carotene, these vegetables may help boost the immune system, deliver vitamin C and folate (which may reduce the risk of heart disease and prevent certain birth defects), and are low on the glycemic index and glycemic load charts.

Biketoberfest throttles up around Daytona–

Biketoberfest 2011
WHEN: Thursday through Sunday
WHO: 125,000 bikers
WHERE: Main Street is the epicenter, but the road also beckons to Destination Daytona in north Ormond Beach and other gathering spots throughout Volusia and Flagler counties.
WEATHER: The forecast calls for a slight chance of showers today and a high of 87, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne. Sunny skies are expected Friday through Sunday with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the mid 60s.

DAYTONA BEACH — A banker from Baltimore, a retiree and a guy with a really big snake — those are some of the people you could meet when Biketoberfest officially kicks off today.

Tailpipes roared, tattoos screamed for attention and leather paraded down Main Street on Wednesday, and on one corner, a 10-foot albino Burmese python named Britney coiled on its owner’s shoulders.

Mike Stevenson, who owns M&M Exotic Pet Rescue in Holly Hill, said he keeps Britney and about 80 other unwanted reptiles in hopes of finding them a good home. He sports a Mohawk, a pair of shades and a tattoo on the back of his head of a cobra baring its fangs.

“Some people freak out,” he said. “Some are cool with it and want their picture taken.”

Stevenson charges bikers $5 to have their picture taken with Britney, who weighs 60 pounds and eats two rabbits every three weeks. The proceeds are used to fund his rescue operation, he said.

Daytona Beach once had an ordinance that prohibited displaying exotic animals in public, but it was removed about nine years ago, City Attorney Marie Hartman said. Ordinances are on the books banning snakes from running at large, creating a nuisance or entering a public park.

As Stevenson handled his python, Jonathan Hobbs, a banker from Baltimore, sat on a bench and puffed a cigar. A 10-year veteran of Bike Week, his nephew’s wedding in St. Petersburg drew him down to Florida. He decided to make a vacation out of it by coming to Biketoberfest for the first time.

Hobbs scanned the cycles lined up along Main Street. For him, they are more than just metal. A bike is an expression of its owner’s personality. Motorcycles and events like Biketoberfest have the power to draw people together.

“The common denominator is the motorcycle no matter what you do in life,” he said.

etiology ee-tee-OL-uh-jee, noun:

1. In Pathology the study of the causes of diseases.
2. Any study of causes, causation, or causality, as in philosophy, biology, or physics.

The etiology of desire is often a muddled search; we insert meaning into the accidental brush of a hand, or in the fleeting sidelong glance of our coveted.
— Micah Nathan, Gods of Aberdeen

For present purposes, this work is significant for one reason alone: it is typical of the interpretative battle that raged throughout the nineteenth century which sought to provide an etiology of evil.
— Joris-Karl Huysmans, The Damned

Etiology is from the Greek aitiología, determining the cause of something, equivalent to aití cause and logia study.

BIKERNET BUILDING APARTMENT for RENT–
A businessman met a beautiful girl and agreed to spend the night with her for $500. They did their thing, and, before he left, he told her that he did not have any cash with him, but he would have his secretary write a check and mail it to her, calling the payment ‘RENT FOR APARTMENT.’

On the way to the office, he regretted what he had done, realizing that the whole event had not been worth the price. So he had his secretary send a check for $250 and enclose the following typed note:

‘Dear Madam:
Enclosed find a check for $250 for rent of your apartment . I am not sending the amount agreed upon, because when I rented the place, I was under the impression that:
#1 – it had never been occupied;
#2 – there was plenty of heat; and
#3 – it was small enough to make me feel cozy and at home.
However, I found out that:
#1 – it had been previously occupied,
#2 – there wasn’t any heat, and
#3 – it was entirely too large.’
Upon receipt of the note, the girl immediately returned the check for $250 with the following note:

‘Dear Sir:

#1 – I cannot understand how you could expect a beautiful apartment to remain unoccupied indefinitely.

#2 – As for the heat, there is plenty of it, if you know how to turn it on.

#3 – Regarding the space, the apartment is indeed of regular size, but if you don’t have enough furniture to fill it, please do not blame the management.

So, Please send the rent in full or we will be forced to contact your present landlady…

Fred Fox, CEO of Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties speaks out about the 2012 V-Twin Expo and its relevance along with other industry notables.

Agoura Hills, CA— “The V-Twin Expo is undoubtedly the best show for Drag Specialties because of the high quality, established dealers in attendance. If it didn’t deliver, we wouldn’t attend” stated Fred Fox, CEO of LeMans Corp, parent company of Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited.

Fox and many other high visibility exhibitors believe in the V-Twin Expo because it repeatedly delivers the best-qualified dealers. Drag Specialties rewards these dealers
each year at the V-Twin Expo by hosting its annual Super Bowl Party near the Expo

“We re-invest and reward attending dealers for supporting the V-Twin Expo and
Drag Specialties with our party. We believe in the V-Twin Expo and plan to continue to
support this show and dealers for many, many years to come” finished Fox.

We have been involved since its first year in 2000” explained Sukoshi Fahey of Avon Tyres. THE EFFECTS OF MANDATORY HEALTHCARE–
Associated Press, 10.07.11, 11:00 AM EDT

ATLANTA — The chairman of a House study committee looking at Georgia’s health benefit plan said the state might require employees to disclose dangerous activities like, skydiving and riding motorcycles.

State Rep. Carl Rogers, a Gainesville Republican, said Thursday that the panel is looking to bring down skyrocketing costs in the state health plan. Earlier this year, lawmakers were forced to scramble to fill a $300 million budget hole for the health benefits.

share The study committee is set to present findings to House leaders by Dec. 1.

Lawmakers heard testimony Thursday from experts in preventative care. They said programs which help employees get healthy can save $3 for every $1 spent by the state.

Rogers said state employees who take part in risky activities might eventually pay higher premiums.

CHP RIDING HIGH ON RESULTS OF FIVE ALIVE PROGRAM–

KELSEYVILLE — The California Highway Patrol’s Clear Lake Area office is wrapping up the yearlong “Five Alive” grant-funded enforcement program. The goal of the “Five Alive” program was to reduce the number of people killed and injured in alcohol-and-motorcycle-involved collisions on local highways.

“We’re encouraged by the preliminary figures which show a considerable decrease in the number of collisions and people injured or killed as a result of DUI crashes, as well as motorcycle-involved collisions,” said CHP Lt. Greg Baarts, commander of the Clear Lake Area office.

To accomplish the goals set for the “Five Alive” grant, CHP’s Clear Lake Area office conducted enhanced enforcement efforts that were directed at impaired drivers and at assuring the safety of motorcyclists throughout the region. The enforcement effort was in addition to aggressive public education and awareness programs about the dangers of impaired driving.

These grant-funded enforcement programs included: 252 individual DUI saturation patrols; four motorcycle safety operations conducted during motorcycle rallies; and eight DUI motorcycle enforcement task force operations. The enforcement operations were conducted in conjunction with other local law enforcement agencies, warrant service operations targeting drivers with multiple DUI offenses and CHP Air Operations.

Lake County provides a primary thoroughfare linking Interstate 5 and U.S. 101 via state routes 20, 29, and 53.

These scenic and winding roadways are favored by thousands of motorcyclists, often while riding in special motorcycle-related events. Alcohol is also commonly served at these events, which compounds the problem. Some of the visitors to nearby wineries also drive while impaired through Lake County. “Remember, when you’re on a ride, please stay alert, ride the speed limit, and ride sober. And don’t forget to wear the proper protective gear,” added Lt. Baarts. “If you’re in a car, watch for motorcycles and share the road.”

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

EMMY-WINNING ACTOR BRYAN CRANSTON DONATES HIS PERSONAL HARLEY-DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE AS GRAND PRIZE FOR LOVE RIDE 28–
GLENDALE, California – October 13, 2011 – Giving may be its own reward, but Emmy-winning actor Bryan Cranston is doing his part to boost incentive by donating the big prize to Love Ride this year—his personal 2006 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail. Anyone who buys a ticket to the event has a chance to win Cranston’s bike while also helping to support the fight against autism when the nearly 30-year-old charity ride returns to Castaic Lake, California on October 23.

“The generosity of great stars like Bryan Cranston is a major factor in the success of Love Ride and the donations we can generate for charities like Autism Speaks,” said Love Ride founder Oliver Shokouh.

Cranston, perhaps best known for his current Emmy-winning role in “Breaking Bad,” as well as his long run as Hal in “Malcom in the Middle,” will ride the Harley in the 2011 event before handing over the keys to the lucky Grand Prize winner. The classic big twin is loaded with accessories and ready for the next owner to hit the road in style.

With a career spanning nearly 30 years, the versatile Cranston has appeared in dozens of films and TV shows and has numerous writing and directing credits to his name. The actor also has a history of supporting children’s causes and recently created an educational DVD called “KidSmarts” to help parents and children prevent child abduction, Thus, supporting Love Ride 28’s drive against autism is a natural fit.

There are more big prizes in the mix that anyone who purchases a ticket to the event can win. Plus, there are numerous rewards for top fundraisers, including a trip for two to the Harley-Davidson museum and factory in Milwaukee.

As the largest and perhaps most eagerly-anticipated motorcycle ride-for-charity in the country, the Love Ride and its many prizes are part of a long list of reasons to attend in 2011 that include:

· An important cause – Raising money and awareness for the fight against Autism

· Celebrity bikers – Mingle with Jay Leno, Peter Fonda, Robert Patrick, Lorenzo Lamas, Larry Hagman, and more surprise celebrities

· Top music – The music of country stars Montgomery Gentry (they ride, too)

· Bike show – Participants can display their rides and win great prizes and trophies

· Motorcycle stunts – Incredible feats performed on two wheels

· Vendor showcase – An array of motorcycle service and accessory vendors

· Gourmet cuisine – Delicious food from a variety of purveyors

As in 2010, the Love Ride charity is Autism Speaks™, the nation’s largest autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism.

Castaic Lake once again plays host to the Love Ride, with its rolling hills, shade trees and shimmering lake providing an idyllic setting for a full day of activities, huge prizes and an eclectic variety of mementoes.

Information and registration forms are available online at www.loveride.org or in person at Glendale Harley Davidson, 3717 San Fernando Road, Glendale, CA. Forms can also be obtained by calling (818) 246-5618.

All makes of motorcycles are welcome to participate in the Love Ride. And even if you don’t ride a motorcycle but would like to donate and join the party in beautiful Castaic Lake, there is ample parking for cars and trucks on site. For latest information and updates on the ride, go to www.loveride.org .

LORAIN POLICE GET $38,000– The Lorain Police Department has received more than $38,000 in federal funds to help reduce crashes in high-traffic areas.

The money will help police conduct high-visibility enforcement, work overtime hours and have educational awareness events, Sgt. Allan Cornwell said.

Chief Cel Rivera noted, “These funds are essential in ensuring that we are doing everything we possibly can to keep our local community safe.”

Police will focus on Broadway, East 28th Street, Grove Avenue, East and West Erie avenues and Leavitt Road. A total of 48 crashes on these roads resulted in 11 fatalities and 37 injuries between 2008 and 2010. Police also hope to limit fatal and serious injury motorcycle crashes to no more than five this year.

The money comes through the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Office of Criminal Justice Services from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to support statewide efforts for restraint use, impaired driving prevention and motorcycle safety.

NUTS–
I attempt to hide out on Thursdays. I enjoy the hell out of searching and bringing you the Motorcycle news from all over the world. It’s a blast, but it’s like creating an entire magazine in a day. Sometimes it virtually kicks our butts.

We also dodge calls, and I sequester myself alone in the shop and pound on the keyboard undisturbed. Unfortunately that’s rarely the case. For some unknown, full moon reason, Thursdays are the power-outage days, an earthquake strikes the coast, my computer quits, an ex-girlfriend surfaces and Sin Wu gets pissed off, the dogs run off, something. So today started with Genevieve Schmitt stopping by from Women’s Riders Now to discuss biz. The kid out front had a flat and couldn’t fix it without help. The shop’s automatic door quit. More Terry the Tramp books arrive. Terry called, because his books arrived. The Buffalo Chip marketing wizard, Lon, couldn’t get the info on Bikernet he was searching for. Frank, of NINO 925, jewelry is trying to make us a 15th anniversary ring and needed more art. Fortunately more Biker’s Choice parts arrived for my Mud Flap Girl bike and my son’s, so I had to stop and check out the stash.

Ray C. Wheeler picked up the rear wheel from Larry Settle’s for the XS, and a new pinion key for the Salt Shaker. You name it, it interrupted my concentration on the news today. If you run into anything out of whack, it’s my fault. But what the fuck, I was Born to Ride.

Ride forever,

–Bandit
