Abbott House is celebrating their 75th Anniversary with the South Dakota premiere of the award winning documentary film “Why We Ride” on Thursday, January 30, at Logan Luxury Theatres in Mitchell, SD, to support the launch of their third Helping with Horsepower™ bike rebuild program designed to teach life skills to the girls at Abbott House.
“Why We Ride” is an inspiring documentary film that shares the passion of motorcycle riding and shows the camaraderie of the friends and families who ride together. It’s a celebration of the motorcycling community, as told by racers, riders, pioneers, and parents involved in the sport, including Mitchell’s own Brian and Laura Klock, their daughters Erika and Karlee, and Abbott House!
The Helping with Horsepower™ bike rebuild program is shown in the film. The program provides 40 Abbott House girls, ages 7-17, new hands-on problem-solving skills as they design, repair, and customize a damaged motorcycle. It assists girls in attaining greater self-confidence and moves them to more action and success. The focus of the program is to impart important life lessons, including: You can repair and rebuild anything in your life with the right tools and inspiration.
“The Helping with Horsepower™ program has significant impact on the Abbott House girls and staff,” said Eric Klooz, director of the Abbott House, Mitchell, SD. “As the girls learn the various types and uses of wrenches and how to remove motorcycle parts, our girls also learn about perseverance, team work, and problem solving. It is truly amazing to see the pride, confidence and self-esteem generated by the program.” Klooz said.

Abbott House is a private residential treatment center for girls ages 7 to 17 who are at risk of not reaching adulthood. Annually, 80 to 100 girls change their lives and regain their youth using the Abbott House programs. The money raised through the the Helping with Horsepower™ Bike Rebuild Program is used to support the education and counseling programs at the Abbott House.
