Nut Run to Bruce’s Bar in Severance, Colorado

The annual pilgrimage to Bruce’s Bar in Severance Colorado was only delayed a little by the recent floods that ravaged that area. Checking the web site the day before, I found the event had been postponed a week. Ninety percent of the roads and bridges heading from Denver to Severance were still closed because of the flooding. So I cooled my heels and waited another week.

Riding up with some good friends was great, we had clear skies and the temperature was comfortable. We headed up Highway 85 and turned left at Eaton. You can’t miss Severance, its just down the road a little bit and Bruce’s is in the middle of town. A restaurant and bar that has been serving good food and cold beer since 1957, Bruce’s has made Severance famous.

In 1959 Bruce Ruth took a gamble and started serving Rocky Mountain Oysters, this eventually put Bruce’s and Severance on the map. As you pull into town you see a sign with the town slogan, “Town of Severance – Where the Geese Fly and the Bulls Cry”. This area of Colorado has long been known for geese hunting and Bruce’s is the place to stop for a drink after a long day in the field.

Rocky Mountain Oysters are, well, you know, Bulls Balls. No other way to say it and the first time you hear it yours may shrivel a little at the thought. But they are good and if you head up to Bruce’s for the Nut Run you will get ‘all you can eat’ for a fair price. Dip them in a cocktail sauce and they are damn fine eating.

We had our share of Oysters and listened to some fine rock-n-roll, saw a few friends and checked out the bikes. It was time to head south and the clouds were building up for an afternoon rain. Taking the back roads we saw much of the devastation of the floods, and had to make a few detours but we beat the rain and made it home safe and sound ready to ride again. Until next time…
