Another wacky day in Paradise. Christmas is just around the corner, and we have much to be thankful for and look forward to in 2012.
The more I speak to folks inside and outside the political spectrum the more the words Freedom and Balance surface. I’ve been reading Bill Clinton’s recent book, “Back to Work.”
I’m still trying to get my arms around the Republican’s notion that we can’t raise taxes. According to my source inside the California Republican party, we take in plenty of money. We just need to spend it wisely. According to Bill Clinton, that’s “heresy.” And we need to think, “we’re all in this together.” He makes some very good points, but there’s a glitch.
Fascinating times. The republicans feel that we need to have the freedoms and opportunities to do anything we want to work for. The democrats seem to belief that we should have the right to health care, homes, whatever, whether you want to work for it or not. There needs to be a balance, and somehow our elected officials need to take charge of the bureaucracies,not the other way around. I’m waiting for the answers. We may need to fight harder for balance and freedom next year.
As you will see below, the EPA is now trying to expand their powers world-wide.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY NOW OPEN– The wife has been missing a week now. Police said to prepare for the worst. So, I have been to St Vinnie’s to get all of her clothes back.
Just put a deposit down on a brand new Porsche and mentioned it on Facebook. I said, “I can’t wait for the new 911 to arrive!” Next thing I know 4,000 ***king Muslims have added me as a friend!
The Red Cross have just knocked at our door and asked if we could help towards the floods in Pakistan. I said we would love to, but our garden hose only reaches the driveway.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN bike club shootings– Police have confirmed that three men involved in a gun battle outside Paesano restaurant in North Adelaide last night are linked to the notorious Comancheros bikie gang.
A lone gunman approached the three men about 9.45pm and fired a shot from a handgun which shattered a glass desserts cabinet.
The attack is linked to a shooting of Comancheros president Vince Focarelli, who was shot in the leg by an unknown gunman at Munno Para West about midnight on Thursday.
Witnesses said one of the three men seated at the restaurant returned fire, hitting the man in the leg. He fled west on Tynte Street and has yet to seek medical attention.
Assistant Commissioner Grant Stevens said the men were known to each other and this was “not a random shooting”. However patrons and North Adelaide residents told of their fear when the gunman struck.
Police said those involved in the shooting were not co-operating with the investigation. Mr Stevens said both men involved in the gunfight were hiding from police and nobody had sought medical treatment. “We are dealing with a group of people who refuse to assist with police investigations and cover up evidence wherever possible. This clearly hinders our ability to properly investigate,” he said.
SADDLEMEN MODS TO THE SHRUNKEN FXR–In a world where over promising and under delivering has become all too common here is a gem I must share. The Bikernet built Shrunken FXR has become my daily rider and needed a couple small adjustments to be just perfect for me.
One detail was the too small seat or the bike was too fast (pick one). So I rode my bike over to meet the nice folks at Saddlemen and see what they could do to help me out with my seat. Upon arriving at the Saddlemen facility I spent time with guys from the front office to the guys in the shop ( all of whom took great interest in my motorcycle and the seat they were going to design and build). I noticed from the get-go these people were all riders. I shouldn’t be impressed by that, but there are so many folks in this industry who don’t even ride anymore.
We discussed what I needed (lumbar support) and a lip on the edge of the seat to keep me from being bucked off or sliding onto the rear fender. We also discussed the lines of the bike and that in the case of the Shrunken FXR , less was more. After the team and I spent a great deal of time figuring out what we wanted and didn’t want I was able to walk around the shop and see the whole seat making process from start to finish. man was I impressed!

United Nations – WORLD EXCLUSIVE: EPA Ponders Expanded Regulatory Power In Name of ‘Sustainable Development’
A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) worker looks at oil from the
Deepwater Horizon spill which seeped into a marsh in Waveland, Mississippi
July 7, 2010.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency wants to change how it analyzes
problems and makes decisions, in a way that would give it vastly expanded
power to regulate businesses, communities and ecosystems in the name of
“sustainable development,” the centerpiece of a global United Nations
conference slated for Rio de Janeiro next June.
The major focus of the EPA thinking is a weighty study the agency
commissioned last year from the National Academies of Science. Published
in August, the study, entitled “Sustainability and the U.S. EPA,” cost
nearly $700,000 and involved a team of a dozen outside experts and about
half as many National Academies staff.
Its aim: how to integrate sustainability “as one of the key drivers within
the regulatory responsibilities of EPA.” The panel who wrote the study
declares part of its job to be “providing guidance to EPA on how it might
implement its existing statutory authority to contribute more fully to a
more sustainable-development trajectory for the United States.”
Or, in other words, how to use existing laws to new ends.
According to the Academies, the sustainability study “both incorporates
and goes beyond an approach based on assessing and managing the risks
posed by pollutants that has largely shaped environmental policy since the
1980s.”
It is already known in EPA circles as the “Green Book,” and is frequently
compared by insiders to the “Red Book,” a study on using risk management
techniques to guide evaluation of carcinogenic chemicals that the agency
touts as the basis of its overall approach to environmental issues for the
past 30 years.
At the time that the “Green Book” study was commissioned, in August, 2010,
EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson termed it “the next phase of environmental
protection,” and asserted that it will be “fundamental to the future of
the EPA.”
Jackson compared the new approach, it would articulate to “the difference
between treating disease and pursuing wellness.” It was, she said, “a new
opportunity to show how environmentally protective and sustainable we can
be,” and would affect “every aspect” of EPA’s work.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year .. . . . . to celebrate great traditions at KJazz.
Throughout the year, KJazz continued to present great live jazz and blues music in the community. Just a few weeks ago, we presented our second annual Jingle Jazz. This years holiday fundraising concert sold out again, which was not surprising given the incredible talent we were fortunate enough to secure.
Kurt Elling and his Quartet headlined, alongside the Luis Conte Ensemble and the John Egizi Quartet with guest Barbara Morrison. This year’s concert was special for several reasons. Besides the rare performance by Kurt Elling, it was our first opportunity to welcome back Morrison, who had taken a medical leave of absence from performing and teaching. Barbara sounded as great as ever, and we’re all wishing her the best as she continues on the path of recovery.
In addition to our ongoing tradition of providing scholarships to four jazz musicians each year, we also offer opportunities for students to intern at KJazz each semester. Students work in a number of departments at the station from assisting with membership and programming to marketing and production.
As we close out 2011, we celebrate all of the great traditions we have been fortunate enough to continue throughout the year, with the most important being the jazz and blues programming we present and preserve on 88.1 FM and around the world on jazzandblues.org.
We are excited to continue these traditions into the New Year, and create new ones with your loyal support. We wish you and your family a happy holiday season and wonderful New Year, and we thank you for making KJazz 88.1 one of the traditions in your life.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON SEEKING VOLUNTARY LAYOFFS– workers at Harley-Davidson Inc. have until the end of the week to decide whether to accept voluntary layoffs.
The Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer is seeking to cut an unspecified number of jobs as part of new labor agreements that go into effect April 1, 2012.
Notices seeking voluntary layoffs went out to employees earlier this month.
“We are seeking voluntary layoffs from the work force, a process that ends this week,” Harley-Davidson spokeswoman Maripat Blankenheim said. “We will then assess our needs, as involuntary layoffs may not even be necessary. We are advising employees of the process, not of any specific involuntary layoffs.”
The layoffs are tied to new contracts that allow Harley-Davidson to reduce its full-time hourly unionized work force in its Milwaukee-area facilities to as few as 700 employees, about 250 fewer than required under the existing contract.
Unions representing Harley-Davidson production workers in the Milwaukee area and Tomahawk ratified three new 7-year labor contracts in 2010. The new contracts were negotiated after Harley-Davidson considered shifting production outside Wisconsin.
The job reductions under the new contract are “unpleasant,” Roland Walter, president of United Steelworkers Local 2-209 told me in a recent interview. The union represents about 1,000 active hourly workers at Harley-Davidson facilities in the Milwaukee area, including the powertrain production facility in Menomonee Falls.
Harley-Davidson consolidated local powertrain production operations at the Menomonee Falls site, a move that led to the shutdown of the company’s Wauwatosa plant.

MOTORCYCLE NOISE LAW SINKS– December 21, 2011 5:20 PM NORTH HAMPTON – Police Chief Brian Page took some heat last year, first for opposing a petitioned warrant article to curtail motorcycle noise in town, and later for refusing to enforce the ordinance after voters passed it by a 2-1 margin. Based on several legal opinions, Page said, police and the town could face legal action if they tried to enforce a lower noise threshold than state law allows.
Page has been vindicated now that a Rockingham County Superior Court judge granted a permanent injunction against the town enforcing the ordinance. The ruling was prompted by an action filed by Seacoast Motorcycles Inc., a Harley-Davidson dealer on Lafayette Road, which claimed that because there is a state law governing motorcycle noise, no town can enact a standard that is more restrictive.
“The court agrees with the plaintiff and finds that the subject of motorcycle noise is preempted by the state and that, since the state has not authorized the town to regulate motorcycle noise, the town has no legal authority to adopt or enforce the ordinance,” Judge Kenneth McHugh wrote in his Dec. 9 decision.
Page, noting he has not yet seen the court order, told the Hampton Union he never doubted the outcome of the case, which centered on an ordinance that would have required motorcycles driving through or located in town to have mufflers that complied with the federal EPA standard of 80 decibels. State law allows 106 decibels.
Page has supported efforts to lower the decibel limit in state law.
“In addition,” Page said, “I want to get out (the fact) that a number of the Seacoast police chiefs and members of the State Police look forward to continuing to work with the riders, the New Hampshire Auto Dealers’ Association, the Seacoast HOG chapter, the New Hampshire Motorcycle Rights Organization and, of course, the General Court, in order to come up with state legislation that will make it easier and more efficient for law enforcement to test the compliance of the sound levels of motorcycle exhaust.”
One of those involved in the legislative push is state Rep. Michele Peckham, R-North Hampton.
Peckham is a sponsor of House Bill 1442, due to be introduced in 2012 and scheduled for a Feb. 7 hearing in Concord. The bill would lower the state’s motorcycle noise limit to the federal standard, beginning Jan. 1, 2013.
Peckham told town leaders earlier this year that three attempts by members of the New Hampshire Legislature in the past four years to reduce motorcycle noise have failed. She called the opposition from the powerful motorcycle lobby opposed to lowering the decibel limit “fierce.”
Peckham said the bill was written not to go into effect until 2013 because the motorcycle community and motorcycle dealers have said replacing mufflers would be a great expense. “That grandfathers every motorcycle on the road today (that is compliant with the state’s 106-decibel standard and) allows motorcycle dealers time to deplete their inventories,” she said.
Peckham said her bill also requires that any motorcycle brought in for servicing after the legislation’s effective day would have to have EPA-compliant mufflers put on at that time.
She urged those who supported the town’s motorcycle noise ordinance, which passed at the North Hampton’s Town Meeting in May 2010, to support her legislation.
Among those now supporting Peckham’s legislation is Larry Miller.
Miller, who is now on the Select Board, and his wife, former state Rep. Judith Day, were prime movers in getting the town ordinance passed. Miller said it would be better to support Peckham’s bill than for the town to appeal the court ruling on the town motorcycle noise ordinance.
“Whether she’ll be successful in getting the necessary support is still a question,” Miller said.
Town Administrator Steve Fournier said he had just read the court decision and that he needed to discuss any further action on the case with the Select Board and town attorney. However, he called the decision “pretty cut and dried.”
“I’m not sure on what grounds we could appeal, but we have to talk to our legal counsel about that,” he said.

WE ARE TURNING INTO THE NANNY NATION–
Danger! Danger! It is all around us and while I don’t believe in putting people in harms way, I do think we are becoming a Nanny state. Recently Judy Wilson and her estranged husband sued Harley-Davidson for lack of ABS on their 2008 RoadGlide led to an accident they were involved in.
They argued that because there was an ABS idiot light on the tachometer they assumed the bike was equipped with the safety feature when it wasn’t. In a rare case of sensibility, the jury in this case sided with Harley-Davidson in that the couple had failed to learn their motorcycle before riding it. I’m all for safety gadgets but I rarely rely on them.
Instead I put my trust into my abilities and myself. If that means I have to back off the throttle while my friends tear through the twisting curves of a canyon so be it. I know what my bike and I are capable of and my days of having to prove anything are long behind me.
To me it is a mindset. The safety features of my bike and vehicles are not in case I get into an accident but rather for if someone gets into an accident with me. I do everything I can to prevent myself from getting into an accident. It means being alert. It means knowing my machine. It means taking courses to improve my riding.
ABS is a great thing but really is a useless invention. Study after study has shown that threshold braking is far more efficient and will stop you faster than ABS. The problem is that threshold braking requires practice; it requires spending time in an empty parking lot learning to do something instead of just riding to the local Timmies Coffee Shop. The same can be said about a lot of things. Riding in the rain means gearing up and getting wet, it means spending hours riding slow until you learn how you and your motorcycle will react in the rain.
To me bumps and bruises are a part of life. They are life lessons that have to be learned–not an excuse to sue someone. They make us aware of our surroundings, aware of others around us. We didn’t learn to walk in a single try but yet we rely on technology to let us run before we can crawl. As we tick down the last year of the Mayan Calendar we have to wonder where we, as a society, will go forward. Personally, I think the single greatest tragedy that could happen to our society is the loss of electricity. All of the technology that so many of us have become reliant on will quickly run down and the buffer zone that technology offered will be gone. The Nanny state will be gone and we will have to fend for ourselves and only the strongest will survive.

DON’T CHANGE YOUR OIL OFTEN– Many automobile owners are spending more than they need on motor oil, believing that it should be changed every 3,000 miles even though almost no manufacturer requires such an aggressive oil-change schedule.
The long-held notion that the oil should be changed every 3,000 miles is so prevalent that California officials have launched a campaign to stop drivers from wasting millions of gallons of oil annually because they have their vehicles serviced too often.
“Our survey data found that nearly half of California drivers are still changing their oil at 3,000 miles or even sooner,” said Mark Oldfield, a spokesman for the California Department of Resources, Recycling and Recovery, which has launched the Check Your Number campaign to encourage drivers to go with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Improvement in oils, friction proofing and car engines have lengthened the oil-change interval, typically 7,500 miles to 10,000 miles for most vehicles.
Changing motor oil according to manufacturer specifications would reduce motor-oil demand in California by about 10 million gallons a year, the agency said. The state has created a website, checkyournumber.org, where drivers can look up the suggested motor-oil change interval number for their vehicles.
The agency and other groups said slashing motor-oil consumption would be good for the environment and won’t hurt the longevity or reliability of autos.

This has been around for years, we still recommend 3k for mineral, 5k for semi syn and 7k for full syn or once a year. Oil technology has greatly improved in the last 10 years, but oils will become contaminated with ethanol (gas is leaked past the piston rings) along with acids and other contaminates. In a perfect world synthetic oils will last 30k+, however they will become contaminated long before they wear out. Changing oil is the best low cost way to protect engines.

TECH QUESTION REGARDING JIM’S TWIN-CAM ENGINES THROUGH DEALERSHIPS– I am interested in the Confederate 120 & 131 bike currently, and know it’s JIMS providing the motors. I want some detailed data of the motors but can not approach thru website.
There’re some of novice’s questions and hope getting answers here.
1. Are the “twin cam” motors of 131 Hellcat and 120 Fighter/Wraith OHV fuel arrangement?
2. The motor performance of max. power? @ ? rpm of the 131 and 120 motors?
I’ll appreciate if any of you can give me the anwsers.

TERRY THE TRAMP BOOK REVIEW– Finished the book a few days ago. Gotta admit, I had a hard time putting it down. All I can say is I wanted more. You had to keep the story moving and there is obviously a lot that can’t be published.
You definitely depicted Terry as a guy being pulled to death and in a serious conflict. I’ll say I loved the way you positioned the history of Harley, the evolutions of clubs from outcasts to outlaws. I wanted more. More details of what was going on in his head, his son’s head, his girlfriend’s head, and the club itself. What an agonizing trip this cat was on. Wouldn’t trade places for anything – ever. You made your promise of not being disappointed come true.
I really enjoyed the book and look forward to other publications from this author.

BIKERNET 5-BALL WHEELER WACING WEPORT–The Salt Shaker is alive. Hell, the spyke starter barely turns before it fires to life. We should be on the road this weekend. Amazing, it will be in the 70s on Christmas Eve.
Hell, it doesn’t even leak. We don’t even know what we did to correct the problem. We immediately changed the fluids with fresh quarts of Spectro oils.
Wheeler Street Dyna
We are so close to wrapping up the Street Dyna build with the Dark Horse Lower End, the RevTech Top End, the Branch head work, Fueling Cams, Harley-Davidson cases, high-flow oil pump, and Fueling lifters and pushrods. We needed a handful of additional parts and since we are receiving Bonne Belle parts from Departure Bike Works, in Richmond, we reached out to Lee for some used parts, like lifter stools, cam cover, and pushrod tubes.
He hooked us up, and the final parts are on their way with the final load of Bonne Belle components. As soon as they arrive, we will haul them to Bennett’s Performance for the full-on build. We will bring you a complete report.

The remainder of the parts are on their way from Departure Bike Works, and just the other day I stole the super slim Spitfire gas tank off the my Son’s Mudflap girl bike to use on this 45 flathead Bonneville racer. I was always concerned about gas capacity on Frank’s bike, so this solves two problems. I needed something super aerodynamic for the Bonne Bell, and this one hits the spot.
Frank and I will pick a replacement from the Paughco catalog and we’ll be all set.

HELMET LAW GETTING A NEW LOOK IN THE NEXT LEGISLATIVE SESSION– Those who rejoiced in thinking the motorcycle helmet issue was over should steer clear of S.C. Sen. Ralph Anderson, D-Greenville. He has proposed a bill to require riders of all ages to wear helmets while in South Carolina, where . S1046 was pre-filed for the upcoming legislative session on Dec. 5, and referred to the Senate’s Transportation Committee the same day.
Signs like this one on U.S. 17 South are posted at each entrance to the City of Myrtle Beach. The SC Legislature is contemplating changing the state’s helmet law so that everyone has to wear one.
Myrtle Beach candidates tackle a variety of issues this year A smorgasbord of issues lies before Myrtle Beach voters this year, say candidates for city council. Bill seeks to regulate mo-peds Bill seeks to regulate mo-peds Kelly Hudak and Bruce LaFollette sold their sport utility vehicle for a black 125 cc mo-ped last month. The point of pre-filing is to make sure the bill is taken up for discussion early in the session that begins Jan. 10.
There will be public hearings while the bill is in the subcommittee and again if it reaches the Senate floor, though none has been scheduled yet. Grand Strand-area senators Yancey McGill, D-Kingstree, and Luke Rankin, R-Myrtle Beach, both of whom are on the Senate Transportation Committee, could not be reached Wednesday for comment. Anderson won’t know whether his Senate colleagues support the bill until it goes to the floor for discussion, but he said he has already heard from some members of the public. “I’ve heard from parents and friends of people who have been hurt or killed,” he said. “There are so many people dying.” He has also heard from riders who want to remain able to make their own choice.
Myrtle Beach’s helmet law was part of a multilaw effort designed to push the May motorcycle rallies outside city limits. It was the most unpopular in a bundle of changes, which included a revamped noise ordinance, a rule against using the city’s name to promote unauthorized events and several other regulations.
Surfside Beach didn’t enact a helmet rule but moved to curb the rallies’ impact by reducing the availability of permits for motorcycle-related vendors during May, as did Horry County. The rallies, which were estimated to draw more than 300,000 during the Harley event in mid-May and Atlantic Beach Bikefest, always held over the Memorial Day weekend, were too big and too loud, the city said.
Although Myrtle Beach City Council members enacted their changes after a college student was shot and killed during an argument over a parking space during Bikefest — though not by bikers — city residents had been complaining for years. The city tried to work with the rally organizers, but organizers were unwilling to compromise, both sides have acknowledged.
Several groups sued the city over the helmet law, and it went to the Supreme Court in February 2010. The high court didn’t issue its ruling until June of that year, allowing two rally seasons to come and go with the helmet law in place. Combined with the efforts of Surfside and Horry County, and those of the bikers and rally supporters who had agreed to boycott the city did so, by the time the court ruled, the rallies, which still take place outside the city, had dwindled substantially.

MERRY CHRISTMAS GODDAMMIT–First a sidebar on the American Chopper Build-off. That show rated higher than the Sons of Anarchy season finale. So the execs at Discovery were pleased. They also have another show planned for Jesse, but it will revolve around fabrication, not motorcycles. It may also find its center revolving around the Austin Speed Shop.
We will see what happens next. It’s going to be a damn exciting year for the Bikernet Crew. I’m going to try like hell to spend an entire day this weekend working on my Son’s Mudflap Girl FXR. Wait, I need to work on putting the patio area back together. We have new neighbors, an LAPD Impound Investigations Yard–WTF. They expanded the area we have for our patio. Plus, tomorrow is my first and last day for Christmas shopping. What the hell am I going to do?
We may still have Ray’s 97-inch Twin Cam put together before the end of the year. He had to blast back to San Jose to testify for his son in court–a minor issue. But then hopefully just after the first, he will blast north once more with his fresh Bennett’s built engine.
Hell, I could write about our projects for a week. I’m also trying to build the lovely Nyla a deck alongside the building. I have all the elements in line. It was intended to be her Xmas present, but we are waiting for the guys next door to finish pouring a new concrete slab beside their building. We are going to roll a crane into their yard, and hoist a 20-foot container over their building and into our yard. Then we’ll build a deck on top of it.
We will bring you a report, as it’s completed. I hope she likes her present. Hang on.
