PRE-BONNEVILLE MOTORCYCLE SPEED TRIALS THURSDAY NEWS FOR August 21, 2014

Hey,

It’s one of those days. We are packing all the shit to haul ass to Bonneville. I woke up at 6:00 with text messages clicking in my ear. Ray’s packing. Rogue is sending Sturgis reports. Bikernet Betsy road reports are flying at us.

I feel good about this run. We are harried, but sorta organized. I think we have the bikes dialed in and the best tool offering in years. We’re all a tad on the edge.

Let’s hit the news, then peel out. The Thursday news is sponsored in part by Cycle Source Magazine and Las Vegas Bikefest.

2014 Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s Biker Belles Event

Real Women, Real Stories, Real Fun!
By Cat Hammes.

I was asked by Toni (from Sturgis Buffalo Chip) if I would be on the panel and share my experiences with other women. I seriously applaud what the Buffalo Chip is trying to do to empower women and I agreed. I have been at several of the events and each year it just gets more enjoyable and I look forward to seeing old friends and making more. The speaking panel consisted of a variety of women with various backgrounds, which to me is great to share so many different experiences. Upon arrival you are greeted by the Buffalo Chip gals and they are so pleasant it is a great way to start out. Followed by the Team Diva Comfort Zone, which included hair care, nail care, massages, all donation only and proceeds to the Charity Helping With Horse Power.

2014 Sturgis Buffalo Chip Wrap-Up

As the 2014 Sturgis Rally Ends, We Remember The Good Times At The Buffalo Chip.

The 2014 Sturgis Buffalo Chip®, Motorcycle and Music Festival has throttled down, and riders are leaving with both a trove of memories and reservations for the 75th anniversary Rally in 2015. The nine days and nights of world-class concerts most certainly topped guests’ favorites list, but the Chip offered more exciting events, thrilling activities and breathtaking rides than any other rally venue and presented difficult choices for patrons each day. Motorcyclists from more than 18 countries and all 50 states chose the Sturgis Buffalo Chip as their home away from home and film crews from as far away as Russia, Japan and China arrived to record Chip events.

Heavy Rebel Weekender

Southern-fried rock and roll of all different colors and flavors.

It was a crispy July morning in Winston Salem. I was at the car show, soaking in the sun, as the candy paint reflections of hot rods and choppers cooked my skin from all angles, like the Smoke Out did the weekend before. To my delight, no one mentions the heat. Conversations are hush, and attendees quietly reflect on the shrine of chrome and steel before them. The cars and bikes are louder and wilder than any one person in attendance.

One Crazy Year Reaching for the Salt

This has been a scramble, and not exactly on time, but we’ve moved forward and the whole scenario is working out perfectly. We’ll see in about a week. If you believe in anything, you believe in your efforts to make your dreams come true. So pray, work hard, check the alignment of the stars, work harder, have some gypsy check your tarot cards, work even harder, and rub Buddha’s belly. Whatever it takes to keep you moving forward.

Baggers are hot! Anyone following the motorcycle scene can¹t have missed this fact. HEAVY DUTY magazine has been running tours to Sturgis for our readers since 1997 and in that time we have seen a lot of changes in the industry. Choppers dominated for a number of years but have now almost vanished from the scene. It¹s baggers, baggers and more baggers.

SCHUBERTH HELMETS COMES TO 5-BALL RESCUE—As is turned out Toby, our magnificent Dr. Feng, Bikernet Certified Welder and motorcycle racer needed a helmet for his pass on the salt with the Bonne Belle in the next couple of days.

As it turned out Ron Benfield contacted me the day before we planned to leave and mentioned his project with German designed Schuberth helmets.

We were able to order a special racing helmet and have it delivered to the Rainbow Resort in Bonneville with the help of Sarah at Schuberth’s American Division. Just in time for the salt.

UNCLE MONKEY DEALS WITH A NEGATIVE SOUL–“Everything is going to be different now,” my friend proudly proclaimed. Accepting a new position at a company means packing up and moving to a new part of the country. He is looking forward to the change, an opportunity to get away from the life- draining life he faced here.

He has been complaining about his career for a while now so it will do him good. The problem is that his negativity has spread to every part of his life. As we sat on my upper deck watching the world pass by, while drinking Jack & Cokes he complained about the kids laughing and playing down the street. About the car that didn’t come to an absolute stop at the stop sign. About the stupid person in line at the liquor store.

The world was against him and he fought every inch of every step of the way. But that was all going to change once he moved. Nirvana awaited him.

He would finally find true love, finally be rid of the constant harassment from the cops. His life was finally going to be great.

The problem is that his life will still continue to be a train wreck just in a new place. It is easy to lay blame for our problems at the feet of others. Why shouldn’t we? Otherwise we have to admit the problem is within us, that we are our worst enemy.

The truth is there are stupid people everywhere, there are bad drivers everywhere. Thinking that because they have a different zip code they will automatically be smarter is well just plain stupid. If you are an alcoholic moving to a different bar down the street or across the country will not stop you drinking or being an alcoholic.

Change has to come from within. My friend has problems with the cops because he rides full throttle weaving in and out of traffic like a maniac. He is constantly getting into fights in the bars, spending nights in jail because he took a swing at a cop.

He doesn’t have an old lady because he is an asshole who thinks every woman is a ho/bitch that doesn’t deserve his time of day. He is the problem and he can’t run away from himself. Even if he moves to the countryside there will still be people driving past his property, there will be deer in the yard, badgers digging holes, and skunks waiting to spray him. He can love every experience or hate them. It’s up to him.

My friend is not alone. Many of us deal with the same things. People are stupider now, people are worse drivers. We are under appreciated at our jobs; our love-ones are annoying us to death. The only way to deal with it is to be a better person yourself. Be a better driver. Just because they ran a Stop sign doesn’t mean you need to do the same.

Realize that the person in line at the coffee shop maybe having a worse life then you are. Find the positives in life. There are millions of them if you start to look for them. It could be seeing a flower surviving after pushing its way through the concrete. It could be a pretty girl’s smile, the harmonic crack of a bat hitting a homerun, or the brutal punch sending a MMA fighter to the mat. The beauty of competition, of winners and losers who leave it all on the field so there can be no shame in coming up short.

Taste the drink in your hand, savor the food in your mouth, love the person in your heart, whether they are near or far. Sit down somewhere and watch the world go by. It is one of the unforeseen benefits of my upper deck. Watching an old couple walking holding hands. A kid landing that difficult trick on their skateboard they have been struggling with. A young couple falling in love, or watch a bird build a nest.

Get out on the road and ride. Listen to the rhythmic thumping of the tar snakes, watch the swaying fields, race the clouds, race the sun. If you can do those things today, do them tomorrow, your future will be a happier one.

ACCIDENT REPORT ON STILL RAY, FREEDOM FIGHTER– I went up to see Ray with his daughter Constance yesterday in Flagstaff Hospital.

We met with his case manager at the Flagstaff Hospital.

They will move Ray to Mountain Valley Regional Rehab Hospital hopefully this week. Once he is there for sure I can send the address for cards.

Ray needs neurological and physical therapy. Ray’s body is healing but he has TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) and can’t go home until he is better. Once he is at the rehab center then they will see how he progresses.

Right now he thinks he is going to be at MOTM.

Constance gave him his cell phone yesterday soooooo…………. If he calls you just agree with him and the conversation will seem off due to his TBI condition.

I’ll keep you posted or email me directly at dbutittaci@gmail.com

See you at MOTM! DB

NEWS FROM WOMEN RIDERS NOW– I can’t believe we’re more than halfway through summer. I’ve enjoyed following a lot of your motorcycle journeys and adventures on Facebook. August is my busy month with Sturgis and other motorcycle travels, but my assistant, Nicole, and I managed to put together a newsletter packed with new and recently posted stories.

I want to call attention to the Biketoberfest Rally, taking place in Oct. 16-19, 2014, in Daytona Beach. The organizers always reach out to women through Women Riders Now knowing a woman holds the purse strings and vacation decision-making power in her household. Biketoberfest is an ideal destination before putting away the motorcycles for winter.

HOW H-D MASTERED PRODUCT POSITIONING–The motorcycle manufacturer has no doubts about its identity. Here’s how you can crystalize yours.

To be able to tell the world about your new product, you first need to be able to talk about it internally.

This is what it means to position your product. To find a great example of strong product positioning, take a look at Harley-Davidson. This is the company’s internal positioning statement:

The only motorcycle manufacturer
That makes big, loud motorcycles
For macho guys (and “macho wannabes”)
Mostly in the United States
Who want to join a gang of cowboys
In an era of decreasing personal freedom.

It’s rather poetic. But you don’t have to be a poet to draft a similarly effective statement. Developing this kind of mantra is formulaic, startup advisor Arielle Jackson recently told First Round Review. Jackson is a former product-marketing manager for Google and Square.

She recommended using the following structure to come up with your own positioning statement:

For (target customer)
Who (statement of need or opportunity),
(Product name) is a (product category)
That (statement of key benefit).
Unlike (competing alternative)
(Product name)(statement of primary differentiation).

Note that the end result is different from a tagline, Jackson said. Taglines are consumer-facing catch phrases that summarize your positioning statement extremely concisely. For example, one of Harley-Davidson’s tag lines is “American by birth. Rebel by choice.”

Internally, positioning statements are crucial because they set the stage for all that will follow–including finding the right people as you expand, further developing the product and, of course, marketing it to your audience.

“It all starts with nailing down your positioning. Everything stems from that.” Jackson said. “If you’ve done it right, you’ll be able to tell everyone why what you’re doing matters in a way that will make them listen and respond.”

SERVICE THAT STOCK VALVE TRAIN WITH PARTS FROM VIOLA V-TWIN– Valve Train Repairs Made Easy!

Probably the hardest part of making valve train repairs is finding quality parts. That just got a lot easier because S&S Cycle has just added a full line of Kibblewhite valve train components to the Viola V-Twin line of service parts.

These US made components cover 1936 to present Harley-Davidson big twins as well as 1957 to present Sportster models. The addition of these valve train components is good news for anybody who makes a living repairing Harley-Davidson motorcycles, but it’s a real bonus to anyone who is looking for quality parts for vintage bikes.

Fix a knuck? No problem!
Repair Twin Cam 103? Ditto!
Restore an ironhead? Bring it on!

No matter what kind of bikes you work on (or would like to work on) VVT has the valve train products you’ll need. That of course includes valves, but also includes valve guides, valve seats, valve springs, top collar keepers, and even rocker arm bushings.

Why use inferior imported parts in your American v-twin, when these premium American made valve train components can be had so easily and will ensure a job well done?

Remember!
The bitter taste of poor quality remains long after the sweet taste of low price is forgotten – John David Stanhope

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY NOW OPEN–
With a very seductive voice the woman asked her husband, “Have you ever seen Twenty Dollars all crumpled up?”

“No,” said her husband.

She gave him a sexy little smile, unbuttoned the top 3 buttons of her blouse, and slowly reached down into the cleavage created by a soft, silky push-up bra, and pulled out a crumpled Twenty Dollar bill.

He took the crumpled Twenty Dollar bill from her and smiled approvingly. She then asked him, “Have you ever seen Fifty Dollars all crumpled up?”

“Uh… no, I haven’t,” he said, with an anxious tone in his voice. She gave him another sexy little smile, pulled up her skirt, and seductively reached into her tight, sheer panties… and pulled out a crumpled Fifty Dollar bill.

He took the crumpled Fifty Dollar bill, and started breathing a little quicker with anticipation.

“Now,” she said, “have you ever seen $50,000 Dollars all crumpled up?”

“No way!” he said, while obviously becoming even more aroused and excited, to which she replied…………”Go look in the garage”.

Third Generation Thug — Takes Charge at Spectro Oils–August 20, 2014 – Intercontinental Lubricants, Inc, of Brookfield, CT, announces the retirement of its long-standing colleague and President, Dave Miller.

Miller, a sprint car racer, tractor and truck restorer as well as Highland cattle farmer and avid Harley rider, joined the Company 27 years ago, serving first as Plant Manager under the leadership of Founder Robert H. Wehman (who brought Dave in to design and build a new production line) and subsequently as VP of Operations under Barbara Wehman when she assumed the Presidency.

Barbara (who passed away on April 22 of this year) stepped aside and turned over the leadership of the Company to Dave in 2003. Under Dave’s leadership, an array of new products – lubricants, greases and appearance products – were developed and provided to our retailers, and the Spectro Brand was exported into more countries, making it a truly global brand.

Dave Miller’s wisdom, humor and energy will all be missed at ILC.

Succeeding Dave in the running of Intercontinental Lubricants are three members of the third generation, all grandsons of Robert and Barbara Wehman, and sons of Vice President Thomas Josefson and Barbara Wehman Josefson.

The new President is Alex Josefson, the oldest of the brothers. Alex cut his teeth in customer relations and retail at NAPA and as Asst. Store Manager at Radioshack. A 26 year-old Eagle Scout and avid outdoorsman, Alex has worked for Spectro for three years, both in the factory and in sales. Alex has a black belt in Cheezic Tang Soo Do.

Joining Alex on the Management Team are his brothers, Chris (24) and Mike (22). Both have earned their Cheezic Tang Soo Do black belts, as well.

Chris was quality control manager at the Olive Oil Factory in Waterbury, CT. where he also served for some time as shipping manager. An Eagle Scout like his brother, Chris was a youth deacon at his local church, and has been most recently an auto mechanic at Newtown Car Care. His focus at Spectro will be quality control and warehouse management.

Mike, a captain in the Roxbury Volunteer Fire Department, has most recently been a Foreman as well as delivery driver for Eastern Precast Concrete Company. A dedicated Harley rider, Mike still holds his High School pole vault record. Mike will be responsible for plant operations.

In announcing the new posts, Alex said, “While we know we have much to learn, we are all buffs and race fans, enjoy anything with a motor, and have spent virtually our entire lives connected to Spectro. We work well together, have seen the success of the Spectro focus on quality and engineered excellence, and will work hard to not only maintain, but build our unique and special brand.”

BONNEVILLE BOUND—You wouldn’t believe the effort it takes to make a Bonneville stab at a record. It’s taken Ray two years to build, test and tune his bike. And it’s still a scramble as we approach the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials.

I can’t imagine dragging all this shit to a drag race every week.

This is on the edge of your seat time, when it comes to Bonneville. Will the weather hold? Will we be able to make a few passes? Will we avoid breakdown? Will we set records? Will we have enough money for dinner?

Rogue is a nut, but he’s a very close brother and a mentor. He’s like my dad in some respects. He just wants to have fun, but he won’t back down to anyone, even whole governmental bodies. He’s the epitome of a freedom fighter. He will never give up.

Once I return from the salt and try to save all the metal pieces from rusting to death, I will start to work with American Biker in Charleston, SC on my new Indian project.
