Big weekend coming up in Los Angeles with the MoonEyes Christmas Party and the David Mann Chopperfest in Ventura. I want to hit both events, but I doubt I will make it. I would rather take a fifth of Jack and find a cave. Or maybe fly to New York City for the Ultimate Builder Show at the Javits Center.
It’s been a wild, challenging week. It’s all good, but sorta overwhelming. I’m fighting with Los Angeles to give a portion of our waterfront back to the folks of Wilmington (the little third world country where we planted the Bikernet Interplanetary Headquarter and nerve center). I’m positive about the effort, but lots of the members of the committee are just as positive about the opposite outcome. “The people of Wilmington will get fucked.”
I’ve been working with the MRF, Chris Callen, and Rob Keller from Cycle Source on an Industry Council to help with the fights to keep us free. We’ve been at it for maybe five or so years. If you talk to some folks they are true believers in the mantra, “We can overcome.” But there are numerous folks, including the MIC who believe we are fucked and just need to make a deal to stave off total annihilation. As you know attitude is everything.

FIGHTING SPEEDING TICKETS–The NMA (National Motorists Association) spells out several proven strategies to fight a speeding ticket in our Fight That Ticket! ebook — a free download for supporting members, a $9.95 purchase for non-supporting members. One such technical defense is based on cosine error. It is an underutilized strategy perhaps because it brings back unpleasant memories of high school math class, or maybe because the error usually produces a lower-than-actual speed reading on a radar/laser gun that already favors the driver.
To first explain what cosine error is and how it can come into play when a law enforcement officer uses radar or laser to gauge the speed of a passing vehicle, we’ll snip a couple of pertinent pages from Volume 2 of Fight That Ticket!:
This page from the CopRadar.com website allows you to dig as deeply into the trigonometry as you’d like. It also provides online calculators to determine measured vs. actual vehicle speed based on the cosine angle. The calculators are helpful if you want to try to avoid unpleasant flashbacks to 9th or 10th grade.
All of this leads to one of the cleverest uses of the cosine error to beat a speeding ticket that we have seen. In fact, we published the following successful defense strategy in the November/December 2005 issue of National Motorists Association Foundation News, the forerunner to the current NMA member magazine, Driving Freedoms. Zamir Bavel incorporated his knowledge of cosine error with strategic questioning to discredit the testimony of the ticketing officer and win his appeal.
A little bit of math mixed with the same courtroom ingenuity may turn out to be your best defense against a speeding ticket someday.

MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION WEEKLY REPORT–The Congress has been working hard this week on funding the government. Failing to pass all of the “must pass” spending bills in regular order once again has the tiger by the tail.
Congress’s inability to pass the bills one at a time, with lengthy and healthy debate and a robust amendment session has left congress scrambling to pass an all-in-one bill now being referred to by a new god-awful moniker: the Cromnibus. A traditional CR or “continuing resolution” simply extends the budget authority that is currently in place to keep the government from shutting down, like it did in sensational style last October.
An omnibus is a package of funding legislation all wrapped up in one vote. A new set of budget allowances for the various Departments of the federal government. Those allowances can be the same as the fiscal year prior or could be completely new amounts based on the Congress’s fiscal mood.
So a new piece of legislation is born, part CR, part omnibus; thus we have the Cromnibus, and it is as ugly as it sounds.
The government would shut down on December 12th, this Friday, if this bill did not pass. That’s unlikely, although not entirely out of the question. So far this lame duck has lived up to its name, lame.
The Congress is limping along. The Democrats seem to not realize their losses just yet, and are still governing as if they will somehow retain the majority come next year. Even with one last Senate race still to be completed, there is, obvious to most, no way they could do that.
Republicans, bolstered in their authority, are beaming with pride. They seem to be equally unaware that a majority in both houses and a President who is hell-bent on silencing the newer, bigger, Republican majorities through regulation and executive orders. Mix in a dash of Ferguson protesters (yes some members are clogging House and Senate floor time with “hands up, don’t shoot” speeches), a scoop of immigration reform, and you have the half-baked lame duck congress of 2014.
Lets hope it goes out with a whimper.

The Mighty Quinn: Checking In With Sons Of Anarchy’s Biggest Badass, Rusty Coones—

You might know Rusty Coones as the one-time Nomad turned Redwood Original badass on the FX show Sons of Anarchy, whose series finale airs Dec. 9. In real life, he’s the lead guitarist for the heavy metal band Attika 7 and the owner of Illusion Motorsports, a custom bike shop located in Westminster. He’s also a longtime member of the Hells Angels, although you won’t get him to talk about that, since club rules prohibit it.
We first profiled Coones for a 2011 cover story that revealed a colorful life that we couldn’t help but imagine might have inspired some of SAMCRO’s fictional exploits. At the time, Coones had already built a bike for SOA creator Kurt Sutter, and his band had been tapped to perform a few songs for the show.

ABATE OF FLORIDA’S 33RD ANNUAL TOY RUN– Riders bring gifts, smiles to thousands.

About 3,000 rumbling, roaring motorcycles cruised along central Brevard County highways Sunday, generating a Christmastime bounty of 10,000-plus toys for disabled children.
ABATE of Florida’s 33rd annual Toy Run drew a long procession of riders adorned with Santa caps, black leather vests, jeans and bikes sporting Yuletide decorations.
End result? Donated toys will be distributed to the Cocoa Police Department Auxiliary, Melbourne Light Parade organizers and Shriners Hospitals for Children. The latter group will present toys to about 150 disabled kids during a Dec. 21 Christmas party at Azan Shrine Center in Melbourne, said potentate Ron Trinkle.
“It’s a very moving thing to see. To see those kids, it’s unbelievable to watch. You see them in wheelchairs — and you’ll be seeing nothing but smiles. They’re very, very appreciative,” Trinkle said.
The Toy Run was marred when a motorcyclist lost control and struck three spectators at State Road 520 and U.S. 1, said Officer Barbara Matthews, Cocoa police spokeswoman.
A 22-year-old woman was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne in critical condition, and a 2-year-old girl was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando. The third spectator, a 44-yearold woman, was treated at Wuesthoff Medical Center-Rockledge and released.
“It tears us up when anybody gets hurt,” said Rik “Dawg” Venerable, president of ABATE of Florida’s Brevard County chapter.
“It’s a shame. People look at it as a black mark on us, but we have a police escort the whole way. The roads are shut down. Everything is blocked off. We ride in a very safe manner,” Venerable said.
“We do everything we can to make it a safe ride. Unfortunately, people are human and they make mistakes,” he said.
Brevard County Emergency Management officials warned motorists Friday to plan ahead for traffic impacts from the motorcycle parade, which led from Merritt Square Mall through Cocoa Village to U.S. 1. There, riders rumbled southward to the Wickham Park Pavilion in Melbourne.
“We had about 3,000 bikes and about 5,000 people. It’s a really, really good turnout. The Shriners doubled their (toy) take from last year,” Venerable said at the pavilion while the Merritt Island rock band Rough Edges played Led Zeppelin’s “Hey, Hey, What Can I Do.” Last December, Mike and Melissa Morales watched the Toy Run from the side of the road near Community Credit Union in Rockledge. “She asked me, ‘Do you think next year we can be part of it?’ And I said, ‘Well, we need a bike first,’ ” Mike Morales recalled.
The Melbourne couple bought a 2003 Harley-Davidson Road King 100th Anniversary Edition in August, joined Steel Horse Riders of Brevard in September, rode in Sunday’s event, and donated a toy truck. “It was a great experience for us. The styles of life, the different clubs and all that, everybody was so open. It’s amazing. It was great,” he said.

Also being revealed for the weekend is “Scout 42” designed by John Shope, owner of custom shop Dirty Bird. The Scout has long been recognized for its sporting heritage framed by racing wins, world records and performances on the fabled “Wall of Death.” The custom work on John’s “Scout 42” was done to highlight that legacy and give his bike an almost sportbike aesthetic, while not detracting from its core handling package.
Both bikes will be unveiled before the press on Thursday, December 11 at the Javits Center, and will be on display for the reminder of the 2015 IMS tour. CLUB NEWS FROM Australia — HELLS Angels claim their feelings have been hurt by their bikie logo appearing on T-shirts and have called in the lawyers.
The Logan City-based Hells Angels Motorcycle Corporation (Australia) – declared a criminal organisation by the Queensland Government last year – has sued five retailers and clothing distributors in the past year and last week launched a case against a Gold Coast seller of motorbike helmets, Team Moto. The club says T-shirts, helmets and sunglasses, emblazoned with their trademarked “death head” logo, lets “non-members wear (logos) reserved for the members, thereby causing anger, hurt feelings and personal distress” to outlaw gang members.
“(Only) club members may purchase or have made … jackets, T-shirts, rings, belt buckles or tattoos,” the gang states in court documents.
Among previous cases were the bikies suing Victorian clothing distributor Eyegasm Brands in a Brisbane court in June after they sold “about 48” T-shirts bearing the phrase “My Boyfriend’s a Hells Angel” to Broadbeach store Igedo. The back of the shirt depicted a pair of wings and were designed by US clothing brand Wildfox, which was sued by the Hells Angels US arm in 2011.
The Hells Angels also settled two other cases in Brisbane. It sued sunglasses company Live Vision, run by Allan Surman, over claims it sold up to 1,676 pairs of three styles of sunglasses with “winged skull” logos which were sold at RipCurl in Darwin.
Retailer Ed Harry Menswear was sued for selling three styles of T-shirts with skulls on them at their Nerang store.
The Hells Angels argued the skull designs were the same as the Hells Angel logo. The Hells Angels argued they had a “very substantial and valuable reputation amongst the motorcycle associations and general public throughout Australia in the “death head” (logo).
The Hells Angels also sued Perth sports-tape maker Rocktape, over two types of tape decorated with skulls which were sold at pharmacies in Burleigh Heads and Broadbeach.
Settlements usually involve an apology, an agreement to stop selling products and an order for their destruction.
In 2009 the former owner of iconic clothing maker Mambo was forced to apologise to the Hells Angels for trademark breaches on a children’s hooded top with a skull with wings.
The case against Team Moto is back in court on February 9.
Not one of the firms sued by Hells Angels wished to comment.

Although this adventure took place sometime in the mid 2000s, I’ve decided to print it here for the benefit of any who would like to ride the huge ships that carry cars, semi trucks, motor homes, and motorcycles from the city of Bellingham, Washington to the distant shores of Alaska. UNCLE MONKEY IS ON THE LOOKOUT–Being on the lookout for a new bike or a new project is just part of being a motorcycle enthusiast. We always keep our eyes and ears peeled for even the slightest hint of a bike, a hidden gem, a rare barn find that is just waiting for us to come along.
We stayed plugged into the online ads; make sure everyone we know or encounter know we are looking for something, anything. We’ve heard all the stories of lost Harleys and Indians stashed away in sheds and we chomp at the bit hoping the next one will fall into our lap.
We hear the rumors, follow them up, most are smoke trails of a friend of a friend who knows a guy with dozens of bikes but after due diligence there just isn’t anything there.
We do stumble across the abused and neglected. Some can be picked up for a song, some are priced way beyond pristine, museum quality. They get left behind with the hope that maybe, just maybe one day the person would come to their senses. Unfortunately, usually the person passes away and the bike is scrapped.
Then there are those good ones. The bikes that are just right with a reasonable price. You hope and plan. Think out everything you would do to the bike, how cool you’ll look rolling into the local watering hole on it. You price out the parts, local sources of parts, plan paint schemes, plan the build, but for whatever reason it just isn’t meant to be. Maybe you don’t have the money, maybe you promised the old lady not one more single projects until you get some money back from the other dozen or so you have. Maybe someone simply out- bids you at the last minute.
You try to justify it saying you offered your best price, the price you could live with, the price that will still afford some ramen noodles to keep you fed. They are the disappointing ones, the ones that got away. You pine for it, wished you had just a little more money in your pocket for it. You hope to see it on the road some day, hope to see it at a swap meet in the spring for sale again. Defeated you log on, check the ads, and find a new lust.

CONSULTING WITH THE MICHAEL HUPY LEGAL DEPARTMENT–Right to Privacy Molested.
We all know about the digital recorders in vehicles, which store personal data, but did you know that companies like Digital Recognition Network (DRN) use high speed cameras to capture up to 60 license plate numbers in a second and stores about 70 million records monthly. DRN serves insurance companies and lenders of automobile loans to efficiently track down the location of cars belonging to drivers who default on the loans. What does DRN do with all the millions of plate numbers that aren’t part of the repo operation? It sells them to law enforcement agencies, private investigators and financial institutions.
The U.S. Marshals Service has been engaging in an “eye in the sky” form of surveillance since 2007. Using small Cessna aircraft equipped with specialized electronic devices, cell phone calls can be intercepted and the location of the caller can be determined to within 10 feet.
The Marshals Service justifies the use of the devices as a tool to find suspects who are known to be in a certain geographic location. The problem is that while looking for that suspect, thousands of conversations between law abiding Americans are also intercepted, and no information has come forward about what is done with that data.
In an effort to curb some of this information gathering, U.S. Representative Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) authored HR 3361, which addressed concerns about surveillance of American citizens. The USA Freedom Act is an acronym for Uniting and Strengthening America by Fulfilling Rights and Ending Eavesdropping, Dragnet-collection and Online Monitoring Act.
Starting out with good intentions, including limiting the extension of the Patriot Act, the USA Freedom Act was amended and watered down by House Republicans loyal to the intelligence community.
The Senate version of the bill, S2685, was authored by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT). Leahy and his backers didn’t think the bill went far enough to stop the bulk collection of data by the government. Much of the support for the bill stemmed from earlier revelations by Edward Snowden, the whistleblower who exposed the extent of government spying on citizens of America and others.
Senator Leahy was joined by three Republican co-sponsors of S2685, including Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) who is considered a possible future candidate to run for president. Ironically, Senator Rand Paul, a Libertarian minded champion of civil liberties, did not sponsor the USA Freedom Act.
With all the rhetoric coming from the NSA and others about these measures being necessary to protect freedom, the question remains whether freedom can be defended if it’s not protected from intrusions in the first place.

HELP the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Build a New Exhibit–At the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame, we work hard to keep exhibits fresh and we try to change out at least one exhibit each year so all of our visitors find something new when they stop in. This year, our new exhibit will be called “My First Ride” and we want your help putting it together. There are two ways you can be a part of this new exhibit.
First, you can tell us all about the first time you were on two wheels. What was it like for you? Were you riding behind some relative or friend? Or did you have the throttle in your hand? Did you crash? Did you have permission to be riding (either from your own parents, or from the owner of the bike) or was it a secret? Was it all you thought it would be? It’s the details we want – we want to hear about the fear, the exhilaration, the excitement, the ups and the downs.
The second way you can help us is by sending us your photos. Is there a picture of that very first ride you took? Do you have a photo of that first bike you ever owned? How about the first bike you ever rode? Maybe it’s a picture of you riding behind someone else (or even in front of someone else). It really doesn’t matter to us if it was 50 years ago, or just yesterday – we want to know what kind of bike you had first. Some of these photos will actually be used in the exhibit. Others will help us know more about what bikes we should search for to display along with the stories and photos.

DIRTY BIRD CONCEPTS Debuts Custom Scout in New York City–Indian Motorcycle and Dirty Bird Concepts revealed a customized 2015 Indian Scout at the International Motorcycle Shows New York City event. Dirty Bird Concepts owner, John Shope, was fired up about the project called “Scout 42” as soon as he saw the new motorcycle revealed at the Black Hills Rally in Sturgis SD earlier this year.
“Dirty Bird is well known for our custom baggers,” says Shope who co-starred in the television show Biker Battle Ground Phoenix, “So when I saw the new Scout I knew it was going to be a real player on the market – and when I had a chance to ride it – I was totally blown away by how great the engine and handling is.”

Let’s just take a look at what’s coming to Bikernet and factor each creative element into the Freedom mix. About the time you think the folks don’t care about freedom, look at what the Bros are doing.
Take a look at this T-Bird. Is that puppy sweet or what? Do you think regulations had anything to do with this fine piece of art? It’s not coming to Bikernet. A brother, Bob Clark, who has lived and survived behind everything custom, all of his life, sent me this shot.
We are about to launch a series of articles on Arch motorcycles by Gard Hollinger. I spent the day with him going over all the elements making up this $75,000 masterpiece. We just barely scratched the surface in one day. I’ll be back many times, and Markus Cuff, our esteemed photographer spent another day working with the Arch Team.
This puppy was designed to be a lane slasher. It’s narrower than most motorcycles by about four inches. Everything on this bike was designed for user-friendly service. Everything was designed to perform multiple functions, and this semi-high-tech, long distance rider, minimalist custom, is an absolute engineering work of art. Hang on for the reports.
