Editor’s Note: We mentioned in the Thursday News that we are about to launch a seat pan tech performed at the Bikernet Headquarters with MC Advantages molding kit. As it turned out a brother Joe Zanelli, our connection at State Line in Nevada read the article and mentioned it to his wife Shirley, who makes custom seats. She recently worked with the MC Advantages kit and shared her thoughts with us. We will follow this up with a comprehensive tech on making a form fitting seat pan in the near future.—Bandit
Funny you should mention the MC Advantage seat kits. My latest seat was done using one. Joe met up with Kent Reed, of MC Advantage, at the Big Twin West bike show in Las Vegas last year, and we decided to give it a shot. It’s a bit messy, very sticky, but well worth the effort. You get the shape you want and an exact fit to the frame.
The hardest part of the whole operation was actually getting the stuff out of the can. Scrap that, the hardest thing is mixing the two components. Imagine pulling taffy that won’t let go of your fingers. It’s still easier to work with than fiberglass.
I definitely think this is a good product, and I fully intend to use it again. Once it is mixed, rolled, cut, and placed on the bike it really takes a nice shape which can then be ground and sanded for a final fit before foaming.
I’ve attached some start to finish photos, to let you see how it turned out. We couldn’t take any pictures during the actual mixing, because it took two of us and we didn't have anyone to work the camera!
