THAT’S NOT ALL BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for June 28, 2018

Hey,

I’m in a difficult situation. When I first watched “The Inconvenient Truth” I was impressed. But I’m a biker and sort of a journalist. I questioned it. How could man have such a massive impact on the climate? I started to question these findings like all journalists should and the info surfaced.

Global warming doesn’t exist, ice is growing and we have more polar bears than ever. It was all a governmental lie to allow them to control everything. When the atmosphere started to cool they changed their tactic to Climate Change. That allowed them to blame everything that happened from car accidents to earthquakes, to rainfall on us. Scary stuff..

Now we are facing another California move to force us all ride electric bikes. But last night a young man said to me, “Just don’t mention Climate Change.” It’s so interesting. Even guys in the industry who make pipes are afraid to discuss this issue. We are all a bunch of white guys who destroyed the planet and must be punished. But it ain’t true. We didn’t destroy the planet. The Climate will continue to change like it has done for 13 billion years, whether we ride choppers with fishtails or not. So there!

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. Most recently the Smoke Out and Quick Throttle Magazine came on board.

SHOP DOGS SALUTE–
Hey there! Wow, it’s crazy how the years fly by! I kept a low profile for a few years, and recently as I was helping my sister with her fight against cancer. She lost the battle this past Dec.

I’m starting to get back with the pace of things. I still stay close to home, don’t do any events, just working in shop. Jim has been keeping busy, still building bikes.
Looks like things are still jumping for you out there on the West Coast with Bikernet and the associated sites.

I was wondering if you knew of any west coast shops that have dogs? I do a monthly column in Thunder Press called Shop Dogs.

Thanks!

NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT–Judge dismisses climate-change lawsuit against 5 oil giants

Ruling says problem must be fixed through ‘political branches,’ not court

Bloomberg News

The suit targeted Chevron and four other oil companies.
A federal judge on Monday dismissed lawsuits by the cities of San Francisco and Oakland alleging that five of the world’s largest oil companies should pay to protect the cities’ residents from the impacts of climate change.

U.S. District Judge William Alsup granted a motion by the companies — BP PLC BP, -3.36% , Royal Dutch Shell PLC RDS.A, -2.97% , Exxon Mobil Corp. XOM, -2.02% , ConocoPhillips COP, -2.42% and Chevron Corp. CVX, -1.99% — to dismiss the suits, ruling that while global warming was a real threat, it must be fixed “by our political branches.”

“The benefits of fossil fuels are worldwide,” he wrote. “The problem deserves a solution on a more vast scale than can be supplied by a district judge or jury in a public nuisance case.”

The ruling is a blow to an emerging legal campaign by cities and municipalities, who are trying to argue that oil and gas companies created a public nuisance by producing fossil fuels they knew would result in harmful emissions. New York City and several other local governments in California, Washington and Colorado have also sued on similar grounds.

HARLEY ISSUES–Harley doesn’t always resonate in Europe.
The American brand plays better than the bike

In Europe, the Harley-Davidson brand is probably as familiar as Levi jeans or an Apple iPhone, at least in pop culture.
Sure, there are more German, Italian, British and Japanese motorcycles in the European Union, but the Harley brand is associated with America and the freedom of the open road.

Harley-Davidson is the world’s largest manufacturer of heavyweight motorcycles, and it’s been selling bikes overseas for about 100 years, practically since the company was founded in a shed in Milwaukee in 1903.

About 16 percent of all new Harleys are sold in Europe, the company’s second- strongest market behind the U.S.

Harley-Davidson has viewed the European Union as a growth opportunity, going wheel-to-wheel with Euro competitors Ducati, Triumph and BMW, whose bikes are especially popular.
In 2013, Pope Francis blessed thousands of Harley-Davidsons and their riders as the American motorcycle manufacturer celebrated its 110th anniversary with a loud parade and plenty of leather in Vatican City.

An unnamed European buyer paid 241,500 euros ($327,000) for a bike that Willie G. Davidson, a retired Harley designer and grandson of the company’s co-founder, donated to Pope Francis.
A Harley-Davidson leather jacket signed by Pope Francis sold for 57,000 euros.

The company will flex its European muscles again in a 115th anniversary celebration July 5-8 in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.
The biker rally is expected to attract 100,000 people from about 70 countries, many of them riding through the city’s narrow cobblestone streets against a backdrop of medieval architecture and 600-year-old castles.

Harley doesn’t sell a lot of bikes in the Czech Republic, but most of the rally-goers will be from other countries anyway, so the company ought to reach its audience.

But aside from the big events, how popular are Harley’s big cruisers and touring bikes in Europe?

It depends upon whom you ask, of course, but Mark Hinchliffe, editor of Motor Bike Writer magazine, doesn’t put much stock in the brand and the made-in-the-USA label.

“I think the way that Europeans look at Harley-Davidson is it’s more of a fashion statement than something that’s high-tech and really useful,” said Hinchliffe, who is based in Australia but has decades of riding experience in Europe.
“Germans, Brits and Italians think of themselves as great engineers and technical innovators. They view American- made as big, ugly, old-fashioned and technically inferior,” he said.

Harley-Davidson said Monday it plans to move production of motorcycles destined for the European Union to its international factories, in Thailand, Brazil and India, in response to 31 percent tariffs the EU has imposed on bikes made in the U.S.

The company has significant opportunities in Europe, but it’s up against Japanese motorcycle makers that aren’t subject to a 31 percent tariff on bikes coming from Asia.

“Harley’s market share is much lower in Europe, at about 10 percent versus 50 percent in the U.S., so there is more room to grow. But there is also more entrenched competition,” said analyst Sharon Zackfia with William Blair Co.
“You have to be fairly well off to afford one,” said Ian Malone, editor of Biker and Bike magazine in the United Kingdom.

“Harley riders are a different breed here,” Malone said, adding that often they’re “slightly older guys” who returned to riding after raising a family and spending years out of the saddle.

In Europe, you’re either “into Harleys or you’re not,” according to Malone

HUMOR TO COPE WITH LIFE–In the military: Drink some water, take these Motrins, and change your socks.

I was taught this song in primary school but don’t remember the words. On the internet there are just thousands of different lyrics of this song and I can’t find the one I learned and loved in school. This below one I found is closest to what I remember.

Gee, Ma, I Wanna Go Home

They say that in the army
The coffee’s mighty fine
Well, it’s good for cuts and bruises,
But it tastes like turpentine!
Oh, I don’t want no more of army life
Gee, Ma, I wanna go home!

The chicken in the army,
They say is mighty fine,
A drum rolled off the table
And squished a pal of mine!
Oh, I don’t want no more of army life!
Gee, Ma, I wanna go home!

The clothing that they give us
They say is mighty fine
Well, me and half my regiment
Can all fit into mine
Oh, I don’t want no more of army life
Gee, Ma, I wanna go home!

The salary that they pay us,
They say is mighty fine
They give you thirty dollars
And take back forty-nine
Oh, I don’t want no more of army life
Gee, Ma, I wanna go,
Hey, Ma I gotta go,
Gee, Ma, I wanna go home!

Harley-Davidson Moves Some Production Out of U.S. After Tariffs–Harley-Davidson motorcycle in Trade War awaiting it’s Third World War

Harley-Davidson Inc. plans to shift some production of its iconic motorcycles out of the U.S. in response to retaliatory European Union tariffs, as President Donald Trump’s trade war ripples back to American companies.

Each motorcycle will cost an average of $2,200 extra after the European Union raised its tariff on imported U.S. bikes to 31 percent from 6 percent on June 22, the Milwaukee-based manufacturer said Monday in a regulatory filing. That’s expected to add up to a burden of $90 million to $100 million annually, which Harley-Davidson will absorb rather than pass extra costs on to customers.

In the meantime, it’s planning to increase production in international plants over the next 18 months. While it’s committed to making motorcycles in the U.S., it has no other choice in a market where it sold almost 40,000 bikes last year. Besides its U.S. plants, Harley-Davidson maintains manufacturing facilities in Australia, Brazil, India and Thailand, according to itswebsite.

“Increasing international production to alleviate the EU tariff burden is not the company’s preference, but represents the only sustainable option to make its motorcycles accessible to customers in the EU and maintain a viable business in Europe,” the company said.

The shares dropped 2.7 percent to $43 in early U.S. trading.

Not long ago, President Donald Trump pointed to Harley-Davidson Inc. as an example of what was going to go right for manufacturing in America. Now, Harley seems to encapsulate a lot of what’s going wrong.

Citing tariffs tied to escalating tension between Trump and the European Union, the iconic motorcycle maker will further retrench its U.S. operations. Bikes destined for the EU were made less viable by levies that’ll boost costs for the company by about $100 million a year.

Already, Harley had announced plans to close a factory in Missouri and build one in Thailand, after Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the free-trade agreement with a bloc of Asian countries that would have lowered barriers to key markets.

Now, Harley joins iconic American companies including Levi Strauss & Co. , Bourbon Whiskey brands and even Germany’s Daimler AG in getting caught in the middle of Trump’s trade skirmishes with major trading partners.

“A company that is as connected to America, and Americana, as Harley is probably going to be laying off U.S. workers in favor of foreign workers and going to be losing money as a result of this,” James Hardiman, an equity analyst with Wedbush Securities, said of the trade battle between the U.S. and the EU. “There’s a lot of irony here, to put it mildly.”

Ramping up output in international plants for the EU may take at least nine to 18 months. While Harley said it’s committed to making motorcycles in the U.S., it suggested it had no other choice but to move production from its home market. The manufacturer sold almost 40,000 bikes in Europe last year, and the continent’s share of total deliveries was the highest for the company since 2011.

PIRELLI Sweeps Heavyweight Class Podium at the 96th Running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb–Chris Fillmore Smashes Middleweight Record by More Than 30 Seconds

The highly anticipated 96th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) got underway early Sunday morning and ended with Pirelli tires earning a clean sweep of the Heavyweight Class.

Carlin Dunne (Ducati) made a statement in his return to the mountain by taking top honors with a time of 9:59.102. Dunne was followed closely by Rennie Scaysbrook (KTM) and his Ducati teammate Codie Vahsholtz (Ducati). Following his record-setting Heavyweight win in 2017, Chris Fillmore (KTM) switched his focus to the Middleweight class where he used his Pirelli tires to take the title, bettering the previous class record by more than 30 seconds (10:04.038).

Both Dunne and Fillmore ran the iconic Pirelli DIABLO™ SUPERBIKE (SC1 front, SC0 rear) tires to victory.

Weather and road conditions on the mountain can change almost as fast as the racers climbing it and today was no different. Inclement weather moved into the area as the latter morning sessions got underway, presenting adverse conditions for the Heavy and Middleweight contenders.

But the weather as no match for the Pirelli-clad racers as Dunne and Vahsholtz (10:12.703) put an exclamation point on Ducati’s return to the “Race to the Clouds” with podium finishes for the Ducati MTS-1260 Pikes Peak bike. Dunne is undefeated on the mountain, claiming his fourth overall motorcycle win in as many tries.

“I felt good off the start and we had a really good cadence going at the bottom of the mountain,” said Dunne. “Once we got into the second half of the race the road started to get really slick so I decided to back it down a little bit knowing the conditions might prohibit a record-breaking day. I was really happy with how my Pirelli tires performed today. Even with the tricky conditions they were still giving me a lot of good grip and feedback all the way to the top of the mountain.”

Following closely behind Dunne, Scaysbrook rode his KTM 1290 Super Duke R to a second consecutive runner-up finish with a time of 9:59.794.

Proving he has a penchant for record-breaking performances, Fillmore rode his KTM 790 Duke with to a dominating Middleweight win, finishing nearly 32 seconds ahead of second place and bettering Vahsholtz’s 2017 Middleweight record (10:34.967) by almost 31 seconds.

“We were a little unsure of how the conditions on the mountain were going to be as the weather rolled in but we couldn’t be happier with how the racers and Pirelli tires performed today,” said Oscar Solis, road racing manager, Pirelli. “The conditions this morning were quite a bit different than in testing and practice but the Pirelli tires were more than up for the challenge as evidenced with the podium sweep and new Middleweight record.”

ATK’s FRANK WHITE SURVIVES MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT FOR THE SECOND TIME–ATK’s, CEO Frank White on Wednesday June 20th survived three hours of surgery to eradicate a 4-inch long tumor from his lung at Huntsman Cancer Hospital. White refers to his tumor as “Wilson,” which White thinks looks like a buffalo wing. According to the pathology report no cancer was found, just sterile remains of tree materials.

White crashed in July 1996 and the Emergency Room Surgeon didn’t fully remove the tree. White was leading a Dual Sport Motorcycle Ride out of Fish Haven Idaho, when he was pierced by a 2-inch diameter tree limb on a remote trail.

According to White; Huntsman Surgeon Dr. Varghese, said, “This was a bizarre tumor, that was building a thicker border wall around the infection each year, very impressive”. Unlike Tom Hanks, White is glad to be done with “Wilson” who has gnawed on him since 1996, especially while riding motorcycles in the desert.

White is grateful to the Huntsman Family and their generous donations of hundreds of millions (yes hundreds of million dollars) to their Hospitals in eradicating cancer and tumors to people worldwide.
http://huntsmancancer.org/giving/foundation/

White said; “Yes, they spend their own money and walk the walk of being true Christians, none better on the planet. I’ve been fortunate to be a motorcycle buddy with Jon Huntsman Jr. Mr. Honda was right, you do meet the nicest people on Motorcycles and none better than the Huntsman family.

White is indebted to Dr. Thomas Varghese Dr V Bio and his team. Whitecalls Dr. Varghese his Rockstar Doctor, who has a stellar reputation in Thoracic surgery.

GOLDEN BOLT SHOW COMING TO LA– Since its inception in Cape Town almost 5 years ago, motorcycles have been a core pillar of The House of Machines (THoM or The House for short).

Each of the owners have had lifelong love affairs with machines of the two-wheeled variety and hosting the inaugural Golden Bolt Motorcycle Builders Invitational at The House of Machines Los Angeles is the culmination of that passion.

The space itself is the product of a labor of love. Initially conceived as “an environment to honor both man and machine”, the store grew from a place to meet to a diverse community, and that in turn grew into a global network.

At The Golden Bolt you’ll experience each of THoM’s pillars brought to life and get a taste of what it’s like to be part of LA’s newest community. See you on 12 July…

THE MIDNIGHT GAS STATION BLUES

It was darker than a sprarkplug hole
And cold enough to freeze your balls off,
Following that straight white line crossing the state
That night on the freeway

Got gas a hundred miles ago
Maybe thirty ‘fore we start runnin’ out
Our butts were numb, eyes peerin hard into the darkness
Hands stiff as granite clamped to the bars,
Still looking for a station

First curve in forty miles was a strain to maneuver
But something ahead made us sit up.
It disappeared and reappeared
The bright star flashed in and out of our sight
As the station came into view

The neon lights made the road grime stand out
Draggin ourselves off our bikes, we fueled
Rested and repaired for what seemed short minutes
Stiffness relieved and warmth regained
We hovered in the shelter of the station

A home on the road for patches and petrol
To take the knots out of our bones,
To wish fellow two-wheelers a safe trip.
The blues really come only between gas stops
When the cold whistles up our sleeves and our toes freeze in steel-tipped boots,
And the darkness falls like a blanket, leaving only the white line to follow.
Then the blues strike and we look for another station.

BIKERNET GARAGE SALE LESSON OF THE WEEK–Some guy bought a new fridge for his house.

To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a Sign on
it saying: ‘Free to good home. You want it, you take it.’

For three days the fridge sat there without anyone looking twice. He eventually decided that people were too mistrustful of this deal. So he changed the sign to read: ‘Fridge for sale $50.’

The next day someone stole it! They walk among us!

MRF ALERT, Industry News – Rough Week for Harley

Boring but important: the European Union announced a 25 percent tariff this week on products ranging from motorcycles, to steel, bourbon and jeans in retaliation for President Trump’s tariffs on imports of European steel and aluminum. (Basically, Europe is going to tax the hell out of all the good shit this country makes).

What this could mean for you? Well, if Harley is paying more in taxes to get their motorcycles into Europe, that money has to come from somewhere… and I doubt their CEO is volunteering to take a pay cut. Oddly enough, India, who is also threatening tariffs and taxes, left motorcycles off their list. Guess India really loves their Harley’s?!

NEWS FROM THE STATES – Missouri’s Freedom of Road Riders Doing It Right

Setting a good example for all motorcycle rights orgs that want to get an early supporter in Washington, Missouri’s Freedom of Road Riders (FORR) are helping to host a rally for Senate Candidate, Lt Colonel Tony Monetti. There is going to be a motorcycle escort to the event and some of FORR’s members have volunteered to participate as well as help to set up/take down/generally help out. This is how its done folks…if Lt. Colonel Tony Monetti becomes Senator Monetti, guess who he is going to remember that helped him get there? Nicely done, Missouri.

MRF NEWS & ANNOUCEMENTS – Announcement Time

If you attended Meeting of the Minds last year, you may have heard me mention that there was a group of folks representing different facets of motorcycling (some of which are our friends, some of which are our enemies) that were trying to figure out how to have some sort of arrangement going forward where, at the very least we all talked regularly and had an open dialogue, and at best, worked together on some common interests. I have an exciting update that this is officially underway….

Last year the National Association of State Motorcycle Safety Administrators (SMSA) and your MRF teamed up to form the National Motorcycle Safety Alliance. The Alliance held its first meeting September 27, 2017 in Burlington, Vermont. Participants of the alliance include the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). And of course, yours truly.

It’s a power house of people that directly touch the rider community in one way or another. In addition to regular communication we are going to initially focus on 2 issue areas – Left turn crashes involving a motorcycle and rider impairment.

More to come on this over the next few months, but I think that it’s so critical that the MRF is not only seen as a participant, but also viewed as a leader in this newly formed group. It helps increase our political clout, expand our reach and puts us on a level playing field with organizations with MUCH bigger budgets and staff that we could only dream of.

Anyway, I hope you’ll share in my enthusiasm as this group moves forward. And as always, I promise to keep you in the loop and up to date with my eyes and ears WIDE open in case the conversation turns sour. But for now, all is quiet on the helmet front.

Enjoy your weekend and most importantly-

BORN FREE HITS 10–It’s not free anymore like in the beginning years. Got too big. $10 Park. $15 entry.

Not free either: No camping, no colors, no pets, no drinking, no drugs, no burnouts, no, no, no freedom.

This is the first batch of bike builders invitational competition. It’s obviously an old school style event. Draws international crowd of about 10,000 over the weekend

So here are the mostly rusty and dusty old bikes that are the essence of the show. Some are cleaner than others but it’s the ratty stuff that gets attention. Well used and barely cared for. Road hard and put away wet. The big group of guys are from Indonesia and some remember me from when I judged their big bike show. About 200 vendors. Bands. Good. Drink. Etc.

We qualified!

There is hope for the future of people who live in California. Cal 3 (Cal3.com) is a plan to give Californians a fresh start — three new states to empower people to guide positive changes to overcome our failing government systems. And we have qualified to be on the statewide ballot in November.

Now we need your help.

So many people believe they cannot prosper in California, whether it is because they can’t afford the housing, because their business moved out of the state, because their children are getting a poor education, or because they can’t afford the high taxes this state imposes on them.

According to SF Gate, “The rumors that more people are leaving California than moving here appear to be true, according to a new report from the state of California. From 2007 to 2016, about 6 million people left the Golden State while about only 5 million moved here in the same period.”

This mass exodus is a failure of government. California’s bloated government needs to be broken up.

Have you ever wondered why our streets are full of potholes? Why our water supply is in jeopardy? Why our taxes are higher than any other state and our education system ranks among the worst? Why businesses like Bechtel, Sony, Occidental Petroleum, Denny’s, Toyota, ERG Aerospace, Allstate and many others are leaving the state and taking jobs with them? Why did California even lose Tesla’s battery factory, Uber’s self-driving car and Amazon’s headquarters?

And why, in the face of these failures, is our state government lavishing layers of state officials with unaccountably irresponsible perks like overindulgent new office space, fat raises, carefree extra-long vacations, phone-it-in work weeks and rampant corporate favoritism?

These abominations should offend the sensibility of every hard-working Californian.

In the past few weeks, U.S. News & World Report came out with a study that ranked California dead last in the U.S. in “Quality of Life.” Even with our near-perfect weather, we rank 50th out of 50! For any Californian — for all Californians — this is an unacceptable result from an as-yet unaccountable government.

And the Orange County Register stated: “In what is sounding like a broken record, California once again ranked dead last in Chief Executive Magazine’s annual Best and Worst States for Business survey of CEOs – as it has all 12 years the survey has been conducted. Texas, meanwhile, earned the top spot for the 12th straight year.” And based on McKinsey data, U.S, News & World Report ranked California 44th out of the 50 states in K-12 education. Unacceptable!

It is time to stem the tide of bad government. We Californians need to make a change!

With three new states, we get to clean the slate. We can be empowered and better represented to provide better education for our children, lower taxes and better jobs for all of us. We can fix the highways and waterways. We can make our local schools not just vastly more successful, but something we can be proud of. We can bring businesses back to our region and get all Californians working again. And, as three states, we can once again be a beacon of hope and an example for America and the rest of the world to follow.

Starting right now in mid-June and through voting day November 6, we hope you will join us and help pass this initiative. Cal 3 will bring its message of positive change, local empowerment and statewide responsiveness to every corner of California.

People are just starting to learn what Cal 3 is all about, but all polling shows that as Californians become aware of the initiative — its need, its simplicity and its benefits — they become more enthusiastic to support it. Momentum is on our side.

If you want to learn more, the California Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) created a report on Cal3, and it shows how easy three states will be to implement. It is a link on our website at Cal3.com. After the states agree on basic state compacts around water, higher education, prisoner distribution and debt and pension assumption, we will get our chance ata clean slate and an awesome state.

As citizens across the entire political, socio-economic and geographic spectrum join the movement to pass this ballot initiative in November, I hope you will also be enthusiastic to help expand our platform of voter awareness and energize our wave of voter engagement.

Please encourage people to visit Cal3.com and to sign up to learn more about our initiative.

JOANN BORTELS IS STILL AT IT–I’m still painting motorcycles, but I also have been doing a good deal of bicycle, helmet, and custom car work. My big project this year is restoring a 1969 Camaro. I replaced the whole floor-pan this past weekend. Still gotta change out the trunk pan, wheelhouses, and right quarter panel.

I’ve attached a few photos of some of the bike stuff I’ve been doing. Some of it is from last year.

Hey, thanks for posting about The Trials of Nina McColl. Wow! I had no idea that kind of stuff went on and into my lifetime!!

STURGIS BUFFALO CHIP ALERT–The psychobilly rockers will set the stage on fire at The Best Party Anywhere!

Psychobilly rock-cowboys Reverend Horton Heat will be taking the Buffalo Chip’s Wolfman Jack Stage to new heights immediately following the RSD Super Hooligan National Championship Races and prior to a smokin’ hot performance by country rocker Eric Church on Wednesday, Aug. 8.

A year after Ed Kretz Sr’s wife Irene died, Ed married his second wife, Mary. She came with a package deal, her son Tony and daughter Rosemary. We camped and rode together with Ed Sr, Eddie Jr, the Chapman’s and our families. There were always racers living at our ranch, but every summer we also ended up with several boys, usually around 14 years old, that wanted to spend their vacation with us. Tony Kretz, and his best friend, Terry Chapman were among them. The boys snuck in the pits with Ken, slow raced for hours, rode motorcycle, had fun and worked their butts off on the ranch and in the shop. Tony died far too young and will be dearly missed. Condolences to his sister Rosemary, their family and many friends. Love you Tony.

QUICK, OPEN THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY–
The other day, as I was working in my front yard, the next door neighbor brought his lawn mower into his front yard. When he started the mower engine, his cat, who was sitting nearby, immediately ran under a bush in the corner of the flower bed.

Eventually, as his mowing progressed, he got to the corner bush, and so he pushed the mower underneath, to get any grass growing there. Immediately there was a distinct “whacking” sound, a loud yowl from the cat, and it ran out from under the bush. The neighbor shut down his mower, and reached under the bush, bringing out the distal portion of the cat’s severed tail, a few inches long.

The owner of the cat ran over, picked up his cat, and rushed over to my yard, asking, “Can you take me to Wal-Mart as fast as possible?” I asked him, “Why do you want to go to Wal-Mart?” He replied, “They are the largest retailer in town!”

BRAND New Bikernet Reader Comment!–1st Annual David Mann Benefit

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=962

What can one say about David Mann that hasn’t already been said? Well, I really don’t care because I will say it anyway.

The Mann’s influence on the Harley lifestyle in my humble opinion equals that of the cult movie Easy Rider! As a young man I discovered an off-the-wall American biker magazine called Easyriders and what an impact that had on me. It literally laid the highway for which I have travelled for over 45 years.

The bikes, the stories and of course the Dave Mann poster. It spoke to me and millions like me. It said build what ya damn well like, look like you want to look, ride the hell out of it and be your self.

Dave changed our lives and his artwork depicted a generation and lifestyle that is just about gone. Respect brother. Respect.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s full-throttled love of Harley-Davidson motorcycles– has been intertwined with his rising political career, but now he must navigate revved up criticism of the Milwaukee-based company from President Donald Trump.

The president on Tuesday tweeted that if Harley goes through with its plans to move some production overseas, “it will be the beginning of the end – they surrendered, they quit! The Aura will be gone and they will be taxed like never before!”

Trump was referring to tariffs Harley-Davidson would face on motorcycles produced overseas and shipped back to the U.S. for sale.

Walker has avoided directly criticizing Trump on the issue, repeatedly saying instead that no tariffs would be good for Wisconsin manufacturers and farmers. He hasn’t spelled out what he would do to further that policy and his spokeswoman repeated that same position Tuesday when asked to react to Trump’s tweets.

“Governor Walker believes there should be no tariffs or trade barriers as the President stated earlier this month at the G7 summit,” Walker spokeswoman Amy Hasenberg said. “When there’s a level playing field, American workers and businesses win.”

Walker’s Democratic opponents — eight are running for a chance to take him on — pounced on the conflict.

“Wisconsin needs a governor who says Donald Trump is a dangerous idiot on every issue from immigration to trade policy,” said Madison Mayor Paul Soglin. “I am saying it.”

Walker owns a 2003 Harley Road King motorcycle that he’s driven across the state to promote tourism and his own political ambitions. When Walker officially launched his presidential run in 2015, about half of his stops in the first week were at Harley shops and he exclusively wore motorcycle boots.

At a presidential debate that year, the motorcycle-boot wearing Walker said his Secret Service nickname as president would be “Harley.”

In an October re-election campaign launch video touting his record, Walker rides his Harley and asks the viewer, “Are you with me?”

Trump made fun of Walker for his love of motorcycles during the presidential race. At a rally in Janesville in 2016, Trump said: “He doesn’t look like a motorcycle guy to me. I’m sorry.”

Walker and Trump made amends, and the governor last year invited the president to take a ride on a Harley after he canceled a visit to the company’s headquarters.

Harley executives later traveled to Washington for a meeting with Trump, who said they told him of the difficulty they faced selling motorcycles abroad.
Harley has also long lobbied against retaliatory tariffs, saying they put the company at a competitive disadvantage.

Harley said Monday it came to its decision to move some production overseas because of retaliatory tariffs it faces in an escalating trade dispute between the U.S. and the European Union.

Trump denied Tuesday that his trade policy was to blame for Harley’s decision.

Trump will get a chance to comment on the situation in Wisconsin on Thursday, when he joins Walker for the groundbreaking of a Foxconn Technology Group factory 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of Milwaukee, where Harley is based. The event was supposed to be a chance for Walker to highlight the Taiwanese company’s plans to invest up to $10 billion in the state and create 13,000 jobs.

But Trump’s comments on Harley could make for an awkward meeting with Walker, especially if the president renews his attacks. Instead of talking about Harley on Tuesday, Walker tried to shift the focus to Foxconn, tweeting: “Foxconn’s state-of-the-art products will be made in the U.S.A. — proudly in the state of Wisconsin!”

COLORS AND DISCRIMINATION LAWS--The following should translate into businesses that do not allow colors are breaking the law.

After ruling that a Colorado baker was treated unfairly for refusing on religious grounds to create a wedding cake for a same-sex couple, the justices said a Washington state florist deserves another chance to challenge lower court rulings against her.

Rather than agree to hear the case of Arlene’s Flowers next term or deny its owner’s appeal outright, the high court sent the case back to Washington’s Supreme Court to determine whether Barronelle Stutzman was treated fairly by state courts.

That leaves unresolved the central dispute between proponents of gay rights and religious objectors: whether anti-discrimination laws in 22 states can require businesses to serve samesex weddings against their beliefs.

The court’s 7-2 ruling this month in the case of Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, did not resolve whether an array of same-sex marriage opponents can refuse commercial services available to opposite-sex couples.

In that case, the majority agreed that Phillips was met with “religious hostility” on the part of a state civil rights commission that ruled against him while allowing other bakers to turn away a customer seeking cakes with anti- gay messages.

Justice Anthony Kennedy said business owners generally cannot deny equal access to goods and services under anti-discrimination laws without creating “a community-wide stigma inconsistent with the history and dynamics of civil rights laws.”

Like Phillips, Stutzman appealed a lower court’s ruling that the state’s antidiscrimination law
required her to serve gay and straight couples equally.

After the justices sent the baker’s case back to Colorado for review, Stutzman’s lawyers sought the same treatment, contending that the state trial court “has treated Barronelle with neither tolerance nor respect.” Monday, they claimed an initial victory.

“The justices agree that her case, and the judgment against her, should be reconsidered,” said the Alliance Defending Freedom, which has represented Phillips and Stutzman.
State officials and the American Civil Liberties Union representing the gay couple urged the court to deny her appeal.

“We are confident that the Washington state Supreme Court will rule once again in favor of the samesex couple and reaffirm its decision that no business has a right to discriminate,” said the ACLU’s James Esseks.

New Scholarships from LOWBROW Customs To Promote USA Manufacturing–Lowbrow Customs, based in Brunswick, Ohio, has announced a scholarship program that is aimed at supporting USA manufacturing. Being located directly in the Midwest’s resurging Rust Belt may have provided some inspiration for the custom motorcycle parts brand.

“Part of our motivation is self-serving. We deal with manufacturers on a daily basis,” said Tyler Malinky, founder of Lowbrow Customs. “We are trying to help create the next generation of manufacturers so we can work with them!” Lowbrow is located just south of Cleveland, Ohio, where industrial buildings and factories are part of the normal backdrop. “We love developing motorcycle parts, and working with other people who have the same attention to detail that we do,” said Malinky, “So we decided to do something to help fill the demand for skilled workers.”

Lowbrow Customs donates two $2,500 scholarships per year to Cuyahoga Community College, also known as Tri-C. The scholarships are awarded by the Tri-C Foundation to students in financial need who are pursing workforce training. “I took both basic and advanced Solidworks 3-D CAD classes at Tri-C myself a couple years ago,” said Malinky when asked about Lowbrow’s decision to back the local college. “I started putting that knowledge to work after just the first few classes. It made a real impact in my life.”

SPORTSTER SHOWDOWN–Led Sled Customs, Biltwell, Inc. and the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Bring Annual Sportster Showdown® Bike Show and Party Back to the Legendary Buffalo Chip.

Led Sled Customs, Biltwell, Inc. and the Sturgis Buffalo Chip will once again host the annual Sportster Showdown, the wildest bike show at the Buffalo Chip, on Tuesday, August 7th from 2pm to 5pm at the Chip Event Center located at the east gate entrance.

The bike show and party are free to enter and attend and feature a mind-blowing collection customized Sportster models, a large dose of memorable mayhem, as well as cash prizes, aftermarket parts and handmade trophies awarded in eight categories including Best Sportster of Sturgis.

“The Chip is the place where my friends and I all go to party and stay in Sturgis,” said Led Sled Customs owner Pat Patterson. “The Sportster Showdown has been at The Chip for a few years now and the only thing cooler than the bikes, is the party and all the great people we meet.”

New to the show this year, is a picnic-style hog roast and Sportster invitational bike build-off. In addition to the eight bike show categories being judged, the Sportster Showdown has invited three of the industry’s best Sportster customizers, Brad Gregory, Christian Newman and Mike Schrickel, to compete in a Sportster build-off. The crowd favorite wins a new Sportster model motorcycle the winner gets to customize for next year’s show.

“Led Sled and Biltwell know all about superior custom bikes and the style and parts that set them several steps above the norm,” said Sturgis Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff, “they add a spirit and coolness to the show and party that few others could do.”

The Sportster Showdown is also pleased to host riders of the 4th annual Aidan’s Ride, a charity ride benefitting the Aidan Jack Seeger foundation which seeks to heighten awareness about Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), help families with children diagnosed with ALD, and push for legislation in all 50 of the United States that mandates screening of newborns for the disease.

Rally is only days away, so put Tuesday, August 7th on your calendar, come to the hog roast and check out some killer Sportsters, brought to you by Hydra Beer Company, J&P Cycles, Metzeler, and S&S Cycles.

AND THAT’S NOT ALL—I had Michael Lichter and his son staying in the compound for Born Free this last week. We had long and deep discussions about these issues of Government interference, the motorcycle industry and Global Warming.

They looked at me sorta crosseyed, like I was standing on their Bible. We’ve been indoctrinated, but we can all change our minds by studying the facts, which I have tried to do for a couple of years.

Soon, it will be out. Fossil fuels are cool. If you run into some greenie, you just gotta say, “Sorry Pal, but you’re wrong. You need to read up on the facts.”

Don’t miss the coverage from the Petersen Museum latest wild motorcycle exhibit. Peter Linney shot every bike in the show and I will bring them all to you, perhaps tomorrow.

We sent our Wilmington sculpture notion to our Congresswoman’s woman’s office and they went crazy and sent it to everyone in town. Let’s see what happens next. Maybe I can get it sent to the mayor of LA.

Keep your fingers crossed. My Grandson might have some of his art featured in the Michael Lichter Buffalo Chip Exhibit this year in Sturgis. He will be featured right along side Willy G.

I believe I fixed my Panhead. It quit running as soon as I got it registered and bolted up the plate. WTF? I kept John Reed in mind, consulted with Eric Bennett and Berry Wardlaw. May go for a ride in a few minutes.

Keep the two-wheeled faith and ride free forever,

–Bandit
