Thursday SHOW ACTION NEWS For Thursday, December 12, 2013

Hey,

It’s Toy Run time on the planet and we have it covered. The action around the world is heating up for Christmas. Redheads are on fire. Stress is high. Watch out for break-ins and pick-pockets. Stick with your motorcycle. Even in the snow it can be the best friend you have.

Let’s hit the news:

The Thursday News is sponsored in part by IronWorks, Cycle Source and Easyriders Magazines.

BENNETT’S PERFORMANCE 4TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY TOY RUN– This is the 4th annual toy run started by a great friend of mine Mike Rowland and his hommie Timmy T. First year there were 12 bikes and they did the run from Mike’s house; 2nd year 22 bikes; last year we did the ride out of my shop and had 55 bikes. This year hopefully a 100 bikes is our goal.

Will Nash of LBFD and sparks of love have been involved from the beginning when Mike approached them. This was all done out of love and kindness from Mike and his riding club, The Uncorrected.

I just host the party. No money is made off this. It all goes to the kids. Rivera/Primo and Speed merchant will be there and anybody else? Bikernet, LRB brakes, and the famous Ray C. Wheeler.

At 2 or 3 o’clock the fire truck will arrive to pick up the toys and let the kids play on the truck..good stuff, good food and great music. Come out if u can.

TIS THE SEASON FOR TOY RUNS BY BIKERNET BETSY–San Fernando Valley Hells Angels Annual Toy Run

By Bikernet Betz

Remember when you were a kid, and the two best days of the year were Christmas and your birthday? Well, I feel lucky, because that IS how I remember it. But we don’t all remember it that way. Imagine hearing about this guy Santa, who brings great toys to good girls and boys? But then Christmas came and went, and you got nothing?

Because your family was homeless, struggling or worse if you didn’t even have a family? Imagine the difference your one gift can make to that one child. Tis the season for Toy Runs, and I believe it is a noble cause.

PORT DOVER FRIDAY THE 13TH--For the second time this year the folks in Port Dover, Ontario, Canada are set to welcome the most unusual motorcycle rally around. It’s Friday the 13th so bikers from across Canada and the US will converge on this little town on the shore of Lake Erie.

Ever since 1981 bikers have shown up in town to celebrate the date, Friday the 13th . No matter in what month it falls or what the weather, they come.

This week we may see how much moxie they have as the weather forecast for Friday calls for temps of a high of 25*F with winds of 12 mph and a 60% chance of snow. For the hard core who will ride there you better bundle up and turn up the wick on those electric gloves and clothes. I can’t wait to watch the live cam to see how many do show up.

AUSSIE MC CLUB LEADERS BANNED FROM TALKING TO EACH OTHER—Is the government paranoid or what?

In the state of South Australia, the Adelaide chapter of the Mongols motorcycle club’s two top members are now banned from talking to each other because police have taken unprecedented legal action to keep them apart.

It’s been revealed that Mongols president Andrew Majchrak has been issued with a Consorting Prohibition Notice that bans him from any contact with Mark Sandery, the club’s sergeant-at-arms.

Mr Majchrak has also been served with another notice banning him from consorting with former Finks member Dylan Jessen – who has told the District Court he has not joined the Mongols in the recent “patch-over” of Finks members.

While Mr Majchrak is not contesting the notice concerning Jessen – who is in Yatala Labour Prison awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to unlawfully possessing a .22 calibre pistol – he has lodged an application in Adelaide Magistrates Court seeking a review of the notice banning any contact with Mr Sandery.

While police have declined to comment because of the court action, senior lawyers said the police move was “a clear indication” police still viewed the Mongols as a major public safety threat, despite the club’s recent public claims it was leaving its lawless, violent past behind.

The notices are aimed squarely at stopping the key members of the gang from talking. It is a very, very effective disruption tactic,” one senior lawyer said.

“If they can’t talk, they can’t do business, it’s as simple as that. A good analogy would be like watching what would happen to a company if the managing director and the general manager can’t communicate. It just doesn’t function.”

Police can issue a Consorting Prohibition Notice under the Summary Offences Act against individuals who match certain criteria involving both their criminal history and police intelligence on their suspected criminal activities.

The penalty for breaching the notice is two years jail.

Mr Majchrak faced Adelaide Magistrates Court last week on a charge of possessing a prohibited weapon – a $14,000 solid gold, two-fingered Finks ring that police have described as a knuckleduster.

Mr Sandery was released from Yatala in August after serving a 14-month sentence for possessing an SKS semi-automatic rifle and 700 rounds of ammunition. He has vowed to seek revenge against people associated with the Hells Angels who were involved in the shooting of his 11-year-old son in September 2011.

The Consorting Prohibition Notices are not connected to the association orders that can be issued once a motorcycle club is declared a criminal organisation under the Serious and Organised Crime (Control) Act (SOCCA).

Police are in the final stages of preparing an application to have the Mongols declared under that Act.

Adelaide Magistrates Court documents reveal police issued the notice against Mr Majchrak prohibiting contact with Mr Sandery on October 21, just a fortnight after reportedly half of the 65-strong Finks members patched over to the Mongols.

Mr Majchrak’s lawyer Craig Caldicott lodged an application on November 18 seeking a review of the notice and an order that it be revoked.

The application lists numerous grounds for the review, but primarily states “there was no basis, or proper basis, for being satisfied of the matters” set out in the notice issued against Mr Majchrak.

The matters “in particular” were that Mr Majchrak habitually consorted with Mr Sandery; Mr Majchrak and Mr Sandery subscribe to an outlaw motorcycle club that subscribes to a “1 per cent” culture; that the Mongols MC, as successor of the Finks MC and the Hells Angels MC, are engaged in an ongoing conflict in which Mr Sandery is centrally involved and that prohibiting Mr Majchrak from consorting with Mr Sandery would achieve any of the matters set out in the final bullet point of the notice.

“Further, and in any event, there is no basis, or proper basis for concluding that it was appropriate that a notice be issued … either at all, or in the terms issued,” the application states.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY SCHOOL HOLIDAY BREAK WORD OF THE DAY-

calorifacient kuh-lawr-uh-FEY-shuhnt, -lor-, kal-er-uh-, adjective:

(of foods) producing heat.

The division of food into azotized and non-azotized is no doubt important, but the attempt to show that the first only is plastic or nutritive, while the second is simply calorifacient, or heat-producing, fails entirely in the face of the facts revealed by the study of man in different climates…

— Oliver Wendell Holmes, “Border Lines of Knowledge in Some Provinces of Medical Science,” 1861

It has been attempted on the basis of their supposed physiological destination, and thus they were divided into the histogenetic and the calorifacient substances; the one going, as was imagined, solely to the formation of tissue, and the other entirely to maintain the heat of the body.

— William Alexander Hammond, A Treatise on Hygiene, 1863

Calorifacient comes from the Latin calorifacere meaning “to make heat.” It entered English in the mid-1800s.

CATHOLIC COFFEE MORNING IN ROME–
Four Catholic men and a Catholic woman were having coffee in St. Peter’s Square.

The first Catholic man tells his friends, “My son is a priest. When he walks into a room, everyone calls him ‘Father’.”

The second Catholic man chirps, “My son is a Bishop. When he walks into a room people call him ‘Your Grace’.”

The third Catholic gent says, “My son is a Cardinal. When he enters a room everyone bows their head and says ‘Your Eminence’.”

The fourth Catholic man says very proudly, “My son is the Pope. When he walks into a room people call him ‘Your Holiness’.”

Since the lone Catholic woman was sipping her coffee in silence, the four men give her a subtle, “Well….?”

She proudly replies, “I have a daughter,

GREAT GOOGALY MOOGALY!!–This has got to be one of the best products we have ever created or damn close to it. Basically, there are a few all LED headlamps out there and they all look like something out of a Star Wars movie. We wanted a 7-inch headlamp that looked normal, even old skool. Something that would look great on a 2014 touring model or a 1950 Panhead FL or anything in between. And what the hell ever happened to real glass???

HedLED next generation is born…

We also wanted the light to outshine all others, both in design and actual light pointed down the road. A headlamp that would draw less current than an incandescant lamp, so it would work great both on an older charging system or a new high output sytem.

We needed a headlamp that would incorporate our signature LED turn signals with an ultra bright LED high & low beam and all under glass..not plastic.

And we wanted it to be AFFORDABLE!!!

PHASE 2™ HedLED™ 7″ Headlamp (1116-0200) DOT & EU COMPLIANT

Retail: $282.57

Application: Basically, anything that uses a 7″ headlamp

AUSTRALIAN BIKERS CHARGED FOR GOING TO A PUB– A Rebels motorcycle club member set to be charged under Queensland’s draconian anti-biker/anti-association laws says the Newman Government has made it illegal to have a beer with your family.

Four alleged bikers, who walked into a Queensland bar, have been arrested under the Newman Government’s controversial anti-association laws.

The men, aged 30 to 56, have been charged under the provisions of the Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment Bill (VLAD), which bans three or more members of a criminal group meeting in a public place.

Rebels’ Sunshine Coast chapter member Mike Smith said he was also in pub at the time but had not been arrested – though he appears to have been targeted by police..

He said he went with his son-in-law, not realising his two sons and another man were also at the Yandina Hotel in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

He now planned to hand himself in to police, comparing the persecution of bikers with that experienced by recently deceased former South African president Nelson Mandela.

‘‘A few days ago the greatest statesman of the world died. World leaders called him a terrorist when he was locked up, just for fighting for his rights to be black. They’re doing the same thing here,” he said.

“What threat do a group of blokes having a beer on the veranda of a pub pose to anyone?’’

Queensland police claim local patrons at the Yandina Hotel alerted them to the alleged bikers ‘meeting’ in the pub, in early November.

Police then seized CCTV footage from the hotel two weeks ago.

Officers from the Sunshine Coast district and Taskforce Maxima then followed up and made the arrests after executing search warrants at five properties on Tuesday morning.

Four men aged between 30 and 56, who police say are members of the Rebels, will face Maroochydore Magistrates court on Tuesday. A 26-year-old man was also assisting with inquiries, police said.

Those charged face a mandatory prison term of six months.

Police said the men spent several hours at the hotel north of Brisbane.

“This sends a clear message to all members of criminal motorcycle gangs that police will take action in every instance where evidence and information is received,” Detective Superintendent Mick Niland said.

Mr Smith said no Rebels had met at the club house since anti-association laws were passed.

“Queensland: beautiful one day, Nazi state the next,” he said.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON CUSTOMERS CONTINUE TO DRIVE H.O.G. EVOLUTION–New Logo Design Points to New Horizons for World’s Largest Rider Club

Members of the Harley Owners Group, the official riding club of Harley-Davidson Motor Company, celebrated H.O.G.’s commitment to freedom and self-expression by choosing a new logo for the world’s largest rider club.

The new visual element evolves the design of one of the most recognized symbols in motorcycling and creates more choices for members to express their pride in H.O.G. membership.

“The iconic H.O.G. logo represents the passion of our riders, and no matter where in the world you go, chances are you’ll find a fellow rider wearing it. It’s a global symbol of freedom, independence and love of the open road,” said Harley Owners Group Director Ken Knuteson. “As part of our commitment to bring more value to our H.O.G.® members, we asked them to help direct the evolution of this powerful symbol.”

The new logo is the latest in a series of enhancements to the H.O.G. membership experience in 2013, including a refreshed members-only web site, updates to the company’s Ride Planner online ride mapping service, and launching a digital edition of HOG magazine for mobile devices.

More than 100,000 H.O.G. members around the world voted online and overwhelmingly selected the winning logo over several proposed designs. The new design captures the spirit of the original Heritage design, which has been in use since the beginning of H.O.G. in 1983, and remains instantly recognizable to legions of H.O.G. members around the world.

Major changes to the logo include bringing the Harley-Davidson Bar & Shield into the heart of the design, proudly representing H.O.G.® as the official riding club of Harley-Davidson, while the eagle shifts its gaze in a new direction to seek new horizons and adventures. Both the new and Heritage versions of the H.O.G. logo are available now on patches and other merchandise and will be joined by additional graphic options in the future to provide members with even more opportunities to express themselves and show their pride in membership.

With nearly 1 million members and more than 1,400 chapters in 140 countries, the Harley Owners Group® is the world’s largest rider club, providing its members with rewarding benefits and unique experiences that enhance their motorcycling experience. Motorcycle Riders Foundation Testifies Before Environmental Protection Agency–
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held a field hearing on the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) in northern Virginia where the MRF
had the opportunity to testify.

There were over 140 panelists that represented a variety of concerned parties. The majority of the panelists were very pro-ethanol, with most of them coming from corn growers and biofuel associations. There were only a handful of people from vehicle-based associations. The hearing was open to general public.

The reason for the hearing was unclear, as the EPA does not have to adhere to any of the panelist’s suggestions. One possible reason for the hearing could be to give the pro-ethanol types a forum to vent after the EPA announced that it is considering lowering the amount of ethanol to be produced according to the RFS in 2014. The EPA specifically said that one of the reasons for the drop in production is a shrinking market place and customer base for the higher blends of ethanol, like E-15.

MRF Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs, Jeff Hennie, had this to say, Our message to the EPA is simple, first halt the sale of E-15 then conduct a comprehensive, independent, scientific study on the full effects of E-15 on all types of vehicles.

To date the only study that has been conducted by the EPA on E-15 is on the tail pipe emissions. The purpose of the study was to make sure the higher ethanol blend did not pollute more than E-10. Prior to October 2010 the EPA had not allowed the sale of the higher blend according to the Clean Air Act (CAA).

When they issued the waiver the motorcycling community at large approached the EPA and told them we are opposed to E-15 for various reasons, one of which is the possibility of voiding any warranty work if the higher blend was used in the motorcycle.

They tried to make various assurances that the pumps would be clearly labeled and that new pump technology will reduce the in line fuel from the previous customer. Currently blender pumps can hold 2-3 gallons and the new technology will reduce this to just a fraction of a gallon. The proprietor of the gas station must purchase the new pumps so that solution seems unlikely to happen anytime soon.

This is the perfect time to contact your Federal Representatives and ask them to cosponsor H.R. 875, a bill that would stop the sale of E-15 until a trustworthy study of E-15 is complete.

You can reach the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and if you need help finding your Federal Representative you can use this website http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/
The MRF will keep you informed on this issue.

UNCLE MONKEY ON GARAGE MODS–I still have lots of stuff to unpack, even more that needs to be organized and squirreled away but my garage is taking shape.
It is still too small for what I need but proper height ceilings, level floor, proper electrical, proper everything makes the space feel a lot bigger then it use to.

As I sprint across the -46 degree back yard it is overwhelming to be in the garage at room temperature. My tools are warm; the bikes are snug as a bug in a rug waiting for me to finally get to them. Above everything else having the space heated constantly is the thing that makes me smile, makes me take a moment and savour the heat radiating from the corner.

Yes, I’m bragging a bit about my garage. Many work in much worse conditions. Trust me, I’ve done my time working under tarps that do little more than collect the water to the lowest point before it seeps through, usually right above where I’m working or where I have to lay down to work.

I’ve run my fingers through thick grass looking for that nut, bolt, or washer I just dropped, or a specialty clip I desperately need. I’ve rummaged through loose dirt looking for the socket or wrench I just set down. I’ve scraped an inch of hoar frost from my bike, so I could reach the bolts. We all make it work, not because we want too but because it must.

I’ve never run into someone who said they had too much space. Even ones who are content with their refuge from society, when pushed sheepishly, admit if they had a couple more square feet they could buy this tool, or work on a bigger project. It is the nature of the beast. Give us space and we will fill it.

MORE TRIKE ACTION THIS TIME FROM OCC–The OCC/Ardbeg ‘Peat Hopper’ Revealed

On Saturday night December 7, 2013 Paul Teutul Sr and the Orange County Choppers crew unveiled OCC’s latest creation, the Ardbeg ‘Peat Hopper’, during their show on CMT.

The project was a collaboration between OCC and Ardbeg, the Ultimate Single Islay Malt Scotch Whisky. The ‘Peat Hopper’ was developed as a rugged, 3-wheeled vehicle that can anywhere, including the peat bogs on the Scottish island of Islay where Ardbeg draws its water to make its award winning whiskey. Made only in small batches and aged at least ten years, a bottle of Ardberg will cost you about $80.

The OCC guys designed the ‘Peat Hopper’ as a cross between a chopper and a tractor. They started out by putting an S&S motor into a custom narrowed trike frame with a custom rear axle. A set of springer forks with ape hangers gives the front end the chopper style while a set of wide knobby tires, and then fabricated a cool tractor style seat and fenders makes it look like it could go farming. But with all the chrome and gold leaf paint plus the wheelie bar and flame throwing exhaust it isn’t practical for the fields. BTW the dual exhausts have flappers on them with the image of Shortie, the Ardbeg mascot, engraved on the inside of them.

While the Ardbeg ‘Peat Hopper’ is built to go anywhere on Islay, it will have to wait for any recreational purposes planned for it at the distillery as it will be traveling the around on a promotional sampling tour. As of right now the schedule with the dates and locations of this sampling tour has not been released but when it is we will post it.

THE STORY OF BIG TWIN: The 5-Wheeled Trike

In October 2011, Jerry sold the “Big Twin” to a private collector, who plans to restore the bike and display it in a motorcycle museum in Las Vegas. “Big Twin” is currently at the Bones Legacy Motorcycle Shop in Las Vegas, with work underway for complete restoration.

OFFICIAL BIKERNET PHILOSOPHER DURING THE HOLIDAYS INSPIRATION–You Can Do Be or Have Anything You Truly Want
Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light. Helen Keller

We have that within us to be, to do and to have anything we want as long as hurts no one. If you choose close your eyes and go back to a time in your life when you knew without question that you could do anything. Maybe it was learning to walk, ride a bike, draw, speak in public, get that date, get your first car, or get that job.

You just knew you could do it, no matter how many hurdles or challenges faced you. Remember that child who had the burning desire to meet a goal.

“Brick walls are there for a reason,” wrote Randy Pauch in his book The Last Lecture. “They give us a chance to show how badly we want something.”

I remember how confident I was when I learned to ride a bike. No matter how many times I fell I kept getting up because I had the vision of riding that bike. I had the burning desire for freedom and mobility and the character to keep trying until I did.

What a great experience it was when I rode that bike for the first time. Think about those times in your Life. For some of us it has been a long time since we have had a heightened level of confidence. Believe me it is still right within your grasp, maybe clouded by the fear and doubt, but raise consciousness and find it. We all have that Power, that Light that dispels all darkness, we just need to go back to that place of knowing you can do it.

It’s a place where good will overcome evil, Faith and Trust will overcome fear and doubt, and Love overcomes hate.

And So It Is

OBAMACARE THREATENS GUN OWNERS’ RIGHTS–Everyone should read this especially veterans. I believe the government is trying to disarm anyone who would fight to protect this country. –Rogue

Veterans have certainly shown they will do that.
http://gunowners.org/oped10112013e.htm

— Written by Erich Pratt

There are lots of reasons for Americans to hate ObamaCare. But gun owners should be especially concerned about this “Obamanation,” because it will allow the federal government to use our medical information to keep us from buying guns.

Just ask yourself:
* Was there a death in your family recently causing you to suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?
* Do you take anxiety medications?
* Did you ever say: I had thoughts of suicide when I was dealing with stress at home or work or after my recent breakup?
* Have you voluntarily checked yourself into an institution to get counseling?

If you answered YES to any of those questions, and there is any federal nexus, then you might find yourself disarmed in the near future.

The reason is that, since 2009, the federal health database – created by section 13001 of the stimulus bill and put in place by Obamacare – will allow the federal government to troll private health records for the purpose of stripping gun rights from persons with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), PTSD, and similar maladies.
Already, more than 150,000 military veterans – perhaps as many as 165,000 – have lost their gun rights because of the “see a Veteran Administration shrink, lose your gun rights” precedent from the Clinton-Bush era.

Consider the Florida military veteran who made national news recently because his guns were confiscated, not returned, and he is suing the city of Daytona Beach, FL.

The veteran, identified simply as “A.B.,” sought help for depression in December of 2012. After he called Veteran’s Assistance, here’s what happened:

Instead of having someone counsel him, VA called local police, who came to A.B.’s home [and] had him involuntarily committed for a psychological evaluation. They also confiscated his firearms, ammo, bows, arrows and other objects they felt could be used as weapons.

A.B. was found to be mentally fit during this evaluation, but authorities still have refused to return his firearms despite AB completing all needed paperwork and affidavits. Now, authorities are saying they won’t return his guns without a court order. This is obviously against the law and the source of the lawsuit.

Sadly, what happened to military veterans has now begun in the private sector – especially in places like New York, where they recently passed their misnamed SAFE Act.

According to gun rights reporter Dan Roberts, firearms are now being confiscated from gun owners because of their mental health information. For example:

John Doe, an upstanding professional with no outstanding criminal convictions and no history of violent action, received a letter from the Pistol Permit Department informing him that his license was immediately revoked upon information that he was seeing a therapist for anxiety and had been prescribed an anxiety drug. He was never suicidal, never violent, and has no criminal history.

So, taking anxiety pills can result in people forfeiting their Second Amendment rights in New York. Obamacare will only expand this dragnet to millions more Americans, especially given that the CDC has “determined” that nearly 50% of American adults will develop a mental illness during their lifetimes.

Obamacare “is the greatest collection of private identification information ever assembled on Americans that will be put into one place,” said Rep. Patrick Meehan (R-PA). Not only that, he said, this process creates a “honey pot” where hackers can get that information on Americans.
Well, what happens if the “hackers” work in various federal agencies? That’s the problem. Federal agencies such as the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) will be able to use this centralized data base to deny gun owners the ability to own or purchase firearms.

This all started under President Bill Clinton, when the Veterans Administration handed over information on veterans with PTSD and other maladies to the FBI.

It resulted in tens of thousands of veterans immediately losing their gun rights. And that’s exactly what you’ll see once doctors and psychiatrists start putting medical information on millions of Americans into the centralized database.

The only difference is that what has been done to our military veterans – by the hundreds of thousands – can now be done to the American people by the millions.

Americans need to let their voices be heard. Please let your Representative and Senators know that you want Obamacare defunded and repealed!

MISSING BIKERNET STORIES DISCOVERED—We were on the hunt for an old Bandit Life and Times story to couple with some Mad Jack Girl of Bikernet photos taken in a shop. That’s when Richard Kranzler, our new Bikernet Baggers editor discovered missing stories. Chapters 1-17 in the Life and times department were missing, and we went on the Hunt. First Richard looked, Bandit checked his archives, and we reachout to our supreme Bikernet Web Master, and even our former Web Master, Brian Hale.

No one confessed, but the chapters mysteriously reappeared, and Richard is now returning them to their rightful place in the Cantina. Here are three teasers, but the mystery shop story line is still missing, so it’s on me to bring it to life once more in the next couple of days.–Bandit

Installment #01 – Asphalt Treks, Chrome Missions

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/Installment_01__Asphalt_Treks_Chrome_Missions.aspx

My first big twin was a 1966 Shovelhead cop bike with a tank shift and suicide clutch. I bought it after I saw a “fresh from Vietnam” snapshot of myself on my ’69 Sportster. I thought I looked ridiculous, so I sold the tight custom Sporty and went to find a big twin. Roaming the classifieds in the Long Beach Press Telegram, I uncovered this sucker in a used car lot in Long Beach. I killed the sonuvabitch several times on my way home, jammin’ the tank shift.

Installment #02 – My First Outlaw

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/Installment_02__My_First_Outlaw.aspx

One of the other students was a tough-looking biker who was short and thin. He had long, thick, wavy, black hair and a full beard. His name was Seymour and he wore all black. In the blistering summer sun he made me sweat just looking at him.

He was an interesting character. Sort of a regular guy at times. But he could be a rough, direct, morose man the next day, and he once ran off one of the other students. The young man never returned to class. I was young, maybe 20, and didn’t hang with anyone. So one day after class Seymour asked me if I would like to go for a ride. I nodded my agreement, and rolled over to his little guesthouse in North Long Beach. It was rare in those days that any biker would share his address with another scooter bum. He’d rather share his girl than directions to the resting place of his bike. Sorta on the rougher west side of the coastal city, Seymour lived in a small bungalow in the back with just a shed to park his bike.

Installment #03 – 1970 Yuma Prison Run

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/Installment_03__1970_Yuma_Prison_Run.aspx

It was 1970 and the summer sizzled, so much so that the asphalt softened from the unrelenting heat as I prepared for the Yuma Prison Run. My first club run. I was riding my first Shovelhead and working on a 45 trike. The 1966 police Shovel from the Long Beach station was stripped, although I had yet to take an engine apart at that point. I got so I could change a paint job in a matter of days by carefully tapping off the chassis from the driveline, removing the rear wheel and controls, and airbrushing a new paint scheme.

Hells Angels Motorcycle Club Donates 300 Free Bikes To Valley Kids–FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) – Hundreds of Angels roared into Fresno Saturday morning to grant the wishes of many Valley children.

Angels, from the “Hell’s Angels motorcycle club,” hand delivered more than 300 free bikes.
“It’s a big gift, it’s a big toy. It’s every child’s dream to have a brand new bike on Christmas. So we are here to help them,” Merl Hefferman, a member of the club.

Eager faces graced hundreds of kids as they waited patiently for their early Christmas gifts.
The children watched as the Angels unloaded several trucks, full of red, black, white and pink bikes.

Kids of all ages walked away with a glossy pair of new wheels.

It was all smiles as some of the kids sat on a bike for the very first time.

“This is a big deal and especially for these children. Many of these children don’t have bicycles; many of them don’t receive a lot of Christmas gifts on Christmas morning,” said Kathryn Weakland, Director of Development for The Poverello House.

The Poverello House organization helps many homeless and needy families throughout the Valley.

As a former homeless child himself, Merl Hefferman looked out over the crowd of happy faces. Hefferman was able to not only give back to his community, but he granted many kids with the keys to their first ride.

The Angels passed along their love of bikes to a younger generation, along with a little piece of Christmas joy.

“That’s what we do, ever year. And we are here to do it again, and we will be back next year. Poverello needs help every year,” said Hefferman.
In addition to the free bikes, the Angels handed out thousands of unwrapped toys including Barbie dolls and toy cars.

Motorcycle groups plan North Dakota POW-MIA memorial–BISMARCK, N.D. — Virgil Horst served in the Vietnam War. He made it back to North Dakota. He didn’t have friends taken as prisoners of war or who were considered missing in action.
But he and several other veterans in the Bismarck area always have remembered the men who not only didn’t come home from that conflict but whose families did not get the closure of knowing what had happened to them. For those families, there were no gravesites to visit, just questions left unanswered.

“Where do they go for a POW-MIA?” Horst asked. “We forgot about a very important group that never did come back to American soil.”

The Vietnam Vets Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club, of which Horst is a member, and the Second Brigade Motorcycle Club have been working for several years on a plan to build a memorial at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. It would honor the 360 men from North Dakota held as prisoners of war or considered missing in action from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Cold War.

The groups have raised more than $140,000 toward the $200,000 cost of the memorial. Now they are hoping the public can help with the remaining money so they can begin construction after Memorial Day.

Horst said he, Rick Colling and John “Butch” Olson make up the board of directors for the North Dakota POW-MIA Memorial and have been planning it for about six years. But it was at a funeral almost three years ago that they really began to push the plan into motion.

Air Force Maj. Tom Beyer was missing in action in Vietnam in 1968. He was declared dead 10 years later, but his remains were not found until more than 40 years after he disappeared, when bone fragments were found and identified as his through DNA testing. Beyer’s funeral was held Dec. 18, 2010.

Some men came home after being prisoners of war, and some bodies of those considered missing in action have been located over the years, like Beyer. However, the final resting places of many remain unknown. Of North Dakotans considered missing in action in the Vietnam War, eight are still unaccounted for, according to the Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office. Of those in the Korean War, 28 remain unaccounted for.
Horst said he, Colling and Olson decided at Beyer’s funeral that they needed to work toward getting a memorial for the men who never came back from war before their names are forgotten to time.

The group approached the North Dakota National Guard, which operates the cemetery, about putting a memorial there.

“It wasn’t a very hard sell,” said Col. Steve Tabor, director of facilities and engineering. He has reviewed — and made only slight tweaks to — the design proposed by the groups.

“I think it’s an appropriate memorial to have out at the Veterans Cemetery,” Tabor said.
Fundraising for the memorial began in earnest on Memorial Day 2012. The groups have held fundraisers, solicited businesses and accepted donations for the cost, plus the $10,000 to $13,000 they have spent on advertising, brochures and architectural designs.

No federal or state money is being sought or used for the project. A man who had been a prisoner of war during World War II came to one fundraiser and was recognized for his service.

“You should have seen the tears flowing that night,” Horst said.

The memorial will consist of granite walls etched with scenes from each conflict and bearing the names of all 360 men considered POW-MIA from North Dakota. It will be set back into the hillside north of the visitors center. The names of people who give at least $100 toward the memorial’s completion will be listed on a kiosk at the cemetery.

Horst said the groups are thankful for those who have given and allowed the project to continue. He looks forward to the day when there is a physical reminder in the state of the sacrifice of those 360 men and their loved ones.

“America should not forget about its prisoners of war or missing-in-action people,” Horst said.
To donate, contact Colling at 701-391-0032, Olson at 701-223-3353 or Horst at 701-667-8802.
