We recently installed the Aero shift linkage from the Toughlinks department of Billet Tough Engineering on my V-Rod. The new shift linkage has a carbon fiber finish; bead blasted tapered ends, and a beautifully finished look. The installation was straight forward and easy to install. While I did hit one little snag along the way, I was able to make the adjustments.
I started by reading the thorough instructions provided by Toughlinks. Well written, with an easy to read diagram, this installation could be performed by any rider who understands what an allen wrench is, as well as righty-tighty, lefty-loosey…or something like that. As a matter of fact, my 9 year old son helped with the install.
I first removed the old linkage, which required the removal of two allen bolts. Unfortunately, because H-D uses some really cheap hardware, I stripped out the head on the rear bolt. No problem, a drilled hole later to loosed it up, and I was able to grab the head with my favorite all-time tool, the vice grips.
The new rod goes in exactly as the old one, with the threaded side to the rear. Be sure to use the spacer bushings that are included with the parts.
I also used a dab of Loctite, blue, on the threads to ensure this baby doeant back out on me. The new bolts are chrome finish and a larger allen head than the stock ones. I was able to tighten them down easily using a 6mm allen wrench.
After the installation, I took the bike outside and admired the look. My father in law, gave it the stamp of approval by stating, “It looks like it came that way from The Factory.”
Super clean, super easy, super part.
