The rapidly growing reunion is sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of Brevard County, Florida. It's currently the largest grassroots reunion in the nation.
It kicked off an a warm Florida sunny Sunday with a motorcycle escort. Over 2,000 riders met at the Moving Wall, which is the 4/5th scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. This stunning replication was delivered to Wickham Park in Melbourne, Florida.
Crowds of citizens lined the route waving and cheering as the procession of American riders rolled passed. The wall was delicately assembled and other preparations meticiously handled in advance so that everything was in order for the opening ceremony.
Opening ceremony was held at the wall Monday evening. It includes the presentation of colors, the laying of wreaths, distinguished speakers, an elegant rifle salute and taps. The Memorial opened to the public 24 hours a day until the closing ceremony the following Sunday. A staff of concerned volunteers answered questions and guided onlookers. The wall, and what it represents, was the reason for this reunion. It was very impressive and emotional, and if you ever get a chance to visit it, I strongly suggest grasping the opportunity.
The reunion was also established to afford a healing effort to those faced with war problems. It all starts with, “Welcome Home Brother.”
In another section of the park the party portion of the reunion kicked-off on Friday at 4:00 p.m., and that's where the music rumbled, drinks flowed and barbecues sizzled. Riders camped and military vendors shared their wares and displays.
The celebration continued to roll until the heartfelt closing ceremony Sunday, 7:00 p.m. back at the wall with a candlelight vigil. Everyone placed their glowing candles carefully near names of their lost brothers.
The reunion has it's serious moments, time of grief, terrible memories and prayers. But it's also a time of greeting old friends and getting to spend some serious time with them. Of course every year I make new friends too, so the party just goes on and on.
I would like to remind every one to thank our military people who are risking their lives now serving our country and pray they make it home safe.
The wall will arrive April 18th in 2005 and be on display until the 25th with the Reunion Run rolling from 23 to 25th. For more information contact Rogue (see his banner below).
