Arch Motorcycle Company Progress Update — In October of 2012 we announced the formation of the Arch Motorcycle Company and our intent to build the ultimate performance-oriented, American v-twin motorcycle.  We spent the next two years quietly working to deliver on that promise, and are now just days away from launch. On September 4, 2014 we will launch our new website with full specs and details on ordering our first model, the KRGT-1.

Along the way, every aspect of the original prototype was revisited to maximize performance, aesthetics, reliability and serviceability in the production version.  When the smoke cleared the only surviving component was the front tire, and that decision is still under review.

The KRGT-1, our first production model, defies classification by today’s standards.  Creating an ultra-exclusive American v-twin production motorcycle equally adept at long freeway runs, and local canyon carving, was a lofty goal.  Equally important, the bike needed to strike a provocative pose from all angles under all conditions.  These rigid requirements provided the baseline performance criteria for our drive from prototype to production.

From the beginning, we agreed to spare no expense or effort to bring us closer to our goal.  One example of this commitment is the unique downdraft intake system.  Our proprietary design eliminates the bulky breather assembly found on nearly all American v-twins.  It increases rider comfort and provides a sleeker, more ergonomic profile.  We spent months working closely with S&S Cycle and K&N Engineering to perfect a package that could be hidden between our billet aluminum gas tanks and still keep the T124 engine properly aspirated.  Finally, matching air dams were machined and positioned to frame the billet aluminum headlight assembly.  “A downdraft system made much more sense for this kind of motorcycle, and it helped deliver the clean lines and ride experience we needed”, said co-founder Gard Hollinger.

Stay tuned in the next few weeks for more insight and imagery around the building of the very first Arch. Additional information is available via our website, Twitter, and Facebook pages.

Motorcycle racer Valerie Thompson prepares for “double duty” at Bonneville speed events with former NASCAR Nationwide car and BMW S 1000 RR — Six-time motorcycle land speed record holder plans to attempt new records on two-wheels and four for the first time

(Scottsdale, AZ) – August 5, 2014 – Six-time motorcycle land speed record holder, Valerie Thompson, plans to race a car and her record setting BMW S 1000 RR motorcycle during America’s two biggest land speed racing events at the Bonneville Salt Flats this month, including Speedweek (Aug. 9-15) and the Bonneville Speed Trials (Aug 23-28).

Thompson returned to the US after her second visit to the BMW Motorrad Days celebration in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany on July 7. “Less than 24 hours after I returned from Germany, I drove to Bonneville to test a Nationwide NASCAR race car provided by owner Charles Ofner, from Houston Texas, along with his crew chief Bob Hustler.  Since I had never raced a car at Bonneville, I had to earn a new SCTA license which I did with a third pass of 193 mph, so I’m good to go” said a smiling Thompson.

During Speedweek, Thompson’s mission is to set a new record in the MPS-G motorcycle class on her BMW DoubleR by exceeding the current record of 204.98 mph and gaining admission to the prestigious Southern California Timing Association’s (SCTA) 200 MPH Club. “I am a member of several 200 MPH Clubs, but wearing the SCTA red hat has been always been a top priority of mine. I’m always dreaming about breaking records at the Salt Flats on my BMW,” added Thompson.

Thompson’s goal with the Nationwide car is gaining more “seat time” while learning the nuances of racing 200+ mph on Bonneville’s often-tricky salt surface. “The car is capable of exceeding 250 mph, so I’m looking forward to breaking my own career top speed of 212 mph. While motorcycles are my first priority, I would love to drive a vehicle over 250 mph and continue setting more records,” Thompson stated.

During the Bonneville Speed Trials, a land speed event for motorcycles only (formerly the BUB Speed Trials), Thompson will gain technical support from 8-time world record holder, Kerry Alter. A veteran Salt Flats racer, Alter has also set 6 national records on a variety of motorcycles.

“I’m excited about working with Kerry again, he has been instrumental to my racing career. My first 200+ mph pass was on his BMW S 1000 RR in 2011. Kerry was responsible for opening my eyes to the awesome power of the BMW Superbikes. As a result, I switched from a Harley-Davidson to a BMW in 2012,” said Thompson. “We’ve been working together for the past year to develop my bike and optimize my riding technique. Every time I work with Kerry I go faster,” added Thompson.

“Whenever I work with Valerie I’m pleasantly surprised with her results. Her competitive drive is difficult to match and she is prepared to win every race where she competes. I’m really looking forward to seeing Valerie’s results at this year’s Speed Trials. The bike is running well and looks stunning with new paint and body work provided by Mesa’s Orlando Auto Body,” stated Alter.

Earlier this year, Thompson collected her sixth land speed racing record at the East Coast Timing Association’s Ohio Mile with a blistering speed exceeding 208 mph on her CTEK sponsored BMW S 1000 RR, shattering the previous record and becoming the newest female member of the prestigious ECTA 200 MPH Club. Thompson’s fame on America’s most famous racecourses is preceded by her TV exposure as a vehicle presenter at Scottsdale’s world-renowned Barrett-Jackson Auction Company LLC and Metro Auto Auction.

Bandit’s Word of the Day —  camelopard kuh-MEL-uh-pahrd  , noun;

1.Archaic . a giraffe.

— Stephen Harrigan, The Gates of the Alamo , 2000

A crier explained that this was the camelopard , so-called because in some respects it resembled the camel, having long, spindly legs and a camel-like face, while its spotted skin resembled that of a leopard.

Camelopard  is a portmanteau of the words camel  and pard , an archaic term for a leopard or panther. It entered English in the late 1300s.

Denver Fair’s Bong, Edible Contests Celebrate Pot

DENVER (AP) — Marijuana joined roses and dahlias Friday in blue ribbon events at the nation’s first county fair to allow pot competitions.

This weekend’s Denver County Fair includes a 21-and-over “Pot Pavilion” where winning entries for plants, bongs, edible treats and clothes made from hemp are on display.
There is no actual weed at the fairgrounds. Instead, fairgoers will see photos of the competing pot plants and marijuana-infused foods. A sign near the entry warns patrons not to consume pot at the fair.

A speed joint-rolling contest uses oregano, not pot. The only real stuff allowed at the event? Doritos, to be used in the munchie eating contest.

Organizers say the marijuana categories this year — which come with the debut of legal recreational marijuana in Colorado — add a fun twist on Denver’s already-quirky county fair, which includes a drag queen pageant and a contest for dioramas made with Peeps candies.

“We’ve been selling tickets to people from all over the world, and we keep hearing they want to come see the pot,” said Dana Cain, who helped organize Denver County’s first fair three years ago. This year’s event is expected to draw 20,000 people.

Judges considered only the quality of individual marijuana plants, not potency or the merits of drugs produced by the plants.

“It’s more like a rose competition than anything,” said Russel Wise, a pot grower who entered three plants and a marijuana-infused baklava treat.

Other Colorado contests — patterned after Amsterdam’s famed Cannabis Cup — gauge drug quality and flavor.

Edible products did require tasting. A secret panel of judges sampled brownies and other treats earlier this month at an undisclosed location.

“At first the judges were eating them all, but by the end they were really feeling it, so they just tasted them and spit them out,” Cain said with a laugh. “We offered them cabs home.”

The winning brownie was made with walnuts and dark chocolate. Top prize was $20 and a blue ribbon. The fair already has a green ribbon — awarded for using environmentally conscious methods.

For the handmade bong contest, three industry insiders judged 17 entries for craftsmanship, creativity — and functionality.

“It has to be something special, something you’d want to use,” said judge Robert Folse, who works at a pot dispensary as a “budtender,” sort of a sommelier for marijuana.

It’s too soon to say whether marijuana contests will spread to other state fairs. Officials in Routt County, in western Colorado, voted last year to ban marijuana from the county fair. Colorado State Fair organizers have expressed no interest in marijuana competition.

California holds an Emerald Cup at the fairgrounds in Sonoma County, where guests with medical clearance are able to sample the drug. That contest is held at the fairgrounds but isn’t a part of the county fair.

Non-Profit SMRi Files Lawsuit against Renegade Classics and Kent Mortimer — To Protect Trademarks and Ensure Fairness to City of Sturgis and Its Residents

Sturgis, SD (August 6, 2014) Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc. announced the filing of a federal trademark infringement lawsuit in Georgia against Kent Mortimer, Renegade Classics and the owners of a Buford, Georgia Renegade Classics retail store to protect the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™ trademarks. SMRi and its volunteer board are the non-profit stewards of the trademarks pertaining to the Sturgis® Motorcycle Rally™.

The complaint filed in federal court details Mortimer’s and Renegade Classics’ infringing use of the term “Sturgis Rally Week” on apparel products, which infringes on SMRi’s rights in the Sturgis Bike Week®, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally™ and Sturgis® trademarks.  By using “Sturgis Rally Week” without the license or permission of SMRi or its licensees, Mortimer, Renegade Classics and the Buford, Georgia storeowners confuse customers about the source of the products and deprive the City and the citizens of Sturgis of royalties due from officially licensed merchandise.

“SMRi was established to spur economic development in the Black Hills region and to bring money back to the community through charitable contributions derived from sales of official licensed merchandise. When Renegade Classics and its agents use the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally trademarks without having a license, less money will go back to the community and we can’t stand for that,” said SMRi Board Member and City of Sturgis Councilman David Hersrud.

SMRi will continue its fight against entities that infringe on the Sturgis trademarks to help protect and preserve the Sturgis brands so the community can continue to thrive and enjoy a tangible return from the world’s largest motorcycling event.  The organization also continues to press its lawsuit in federal court in South Dakota against Rushmore Photo and Gift and its proprietors, and against Wal-Mart Stores, for their unlawful and unlicensed use of the terms “Officially Licensed Sturgis” and “Sturgis Motor Classic” on souvenirs they sell.

About SMRi

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Inc. (SMRi) is a South Dakota not-for-profit organization with no owners or shareholders and a volunteer board. The board’s members represent a variety of stakeholders in the Sturgis area, including the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce, the City of Sturgis, Sturgis-area commercial property owners, and rally-related and non-rally-oriented businesses. www.sturgismcrallyinc.com

Part Two – Gasohol…Good or Bad?

I wasn’t sure how much would happen in the 30 days since I wrote the last article ‘Gasohol…Good or Bad?’. I originally thought I might wait another month, but after all I have seen in the last 30 days, I knew I had to inform you as soon as possible.
On the trip down to Daytona Bikeweek I tested the fuel at every gas station I filled up at. I stopped 3 times for fuel and all the pumps had stickers claiming up to 10% Ethanol. Two of the stations had fuel that was at the 10% Ethanol line and one had only 5% ethanol.
