Ducati has revealed the world’s first production motorcycle that is wirelessly integrated with airbag riding jackets.

Traditionally motorcycle airbag jackets are tethered to the motorcycle and if the rider is thrown from the bike during a collision this will trigger a carbon dioxide canister to automatically release gas to inflate the jacket, providing impact protection to the rider.

But Ducati’s new Multistrada D-Air, available in Europe only from May, features a fully integrated, intelligent system of sensors that are wirelessly connected to Ducati Apparel airbag jackets made by Dainese. The intelligent passive safety system uses sensors built into the Multistrada’s existing electronics to constantly monitor the vehicle’s dynamic situation and deploy the airbag only when it is involved in a genuine accident. The system, developed in cooperation with Dainese, is capable of completing the data analysis and airbag deployment inside both rider and passenger jackets in just 45 milliseconds, considerably reducing the risk of injury upon impact.
