Don’t miss the new Easy Rider movie at Las Vegas Bikefest, this weekend.

THE UNCLE MONKEY BIKER DEFINITION–“You’re a biker!?!” I’m not really sure if I should take the comment as a compliment or as an insult. I wonder how they have missed my leather jacket and helmet, or the loud rumbling Fat Boy I parked out front. To be honest I’m not really sure what they are talking about when they say “biker”. Perhaps it is because I’m not dripping from head to toe in the latest offerings from the bar and shield boutique. I wonder if they, like so many, are referring to “biker” as a derogatory remark as if I was the scourge of the earth; there to plunder their homes, rape their women and take their children.

We all have an image that pops to mind when we hear the word biker; long, wind swept hair, a bug splattered smile, worn black leather jacket or vest over a black t-shirt, with dirty faded blue jeans and heavy black boots. Sometimes it is a self-portrait, sometimes not. That image, more often then not, applies to all of us that ride. But a biker is something more, something other than a motorcycle enthusiast, something other then a rider. Even in the crowded streets of Sturgis and Daytona, a biker stands out.

A biker is always a biker. It is not something they turn on or off as the situation dictates. They don’t become a biker for the weekend or after they get off of work. It is not something that they got from standing in a parking lot or because they stitched a patch or two onto their jacket. It is something that was earned out on the highways and roadways of this great nation.

Bikers wear the miles on their face and in their souls; the good miles along side with the bad. Their eyes have seen the beauty that this world has to offer and the worst in man. They have become hardened to the elements, even harder to heartache and pain. Some have lost a close friend. Someone whose friendship went beyond what mere words can express, someone who had become simply their bro, someone who was taken way to early from their lives.

Bikers are the first to extend a helping hand because they have been there before. They have gone without so that someone else wouldn’t. Bikers open their arms, their hearts, and their homes to strangers and only ask for friendship in return.

They defend our freedoms when no one else will. Life is lived by a code that few would understand, few could appreciate.

Bikers don’t worry about the storm clouds on the horizon, or the trouble that they will bring. They know in their gut that when that time comes they will persevere, they will survive, they will conquer.

— bad Uncle Monkey

I don’t always agree with the Monkey’s ramblings, but this one hits the nail on the heard. Yesterday, I went to see a VA specialist about my bad arthritic hip. I was finally led into a doctor’s office. To my complete surprise in the center of this small, dark, cluttered office surrounded by frame photos, diplomas and certificates, sat a biker. Dr. Patricia Nance, an obviously brilliant doctor. She was wearing her contoured leather vest over baby blue blouse, and a black and white shot of her husband and her Sportster, after a Canadian ride, stood proudly on the wall. But her enthusiastic, heart-on-her-sleeve demeanor and bright eyes told me more about her biker spirit.–Bandit

BIKERNET REPORTER EMBEDDED IN LAS VEGAS TO COVER BIKEFEST–It is still early in the day in Las Vegas, the sun is out, and it promises to become a beautiful day with slightly lower temperatures than earlier in the week. The 75 degrees are a welcome change to the almost triple digits of earlier in the week… Long story short: perfect riding weather just in time for Las Vegas Bikefest 2009.

At the main venue, the Cashman center just north of the strip, vendors and participants of Artistry in Iron are starting to show up, hammering their booths together and rolling in their bikes. From what we could spot while roaming the halls with still half closed eyes after the trip over here, it promises to be a very interesting event this year. Many of the iron artisans brought really cool creations. Definitely a lot of eye candy for the crowds.

LVbike

Most of the big names in the industry seem to have made their way to Las Vegas this year: Big Bear Chopper were just rolling their bikes of the semi while we walked by, Paul Yaffe was setting up his booth inside and the team from Saxon Motorcycles were putting the final polishing touches on their line-up.

Las Vegas Bikefest is of course not all about vendors and walking the soles off your shoos while shopping for parts. Numerous rides will take roll down the streets and highways of the gambling capitol of the world and the desert surrounding it. Looking at the schedule for the weekend, it becomes clear that you will have to pick and choose what you want to do and where you want to be. Having it all – like in real life – is not an option.

A special treat should also be an event that is not a part of the Bikefest schedule: The people behind the new movie ‘Easy Riders: The Ride Back’ will have a private screening of the film later today with a full program leading up to it, including a ride from Red Rock Harley-Davidson to the cinema.

LVgirl

And then of course, there is all the other fun stuff sin city has to offer: Casinos, great restaurants, entertainment more than you can handle, and of course some great roads to open the throttle and feel the wind in your face.

Should you be in the area and have some time to spare between poker runs, parties and cruising the vendor village, you may jump on the bike and check out the new bridge they are building over the Colorado river just next to the Hoover Dam. While this is a nice ride and the sharp turns around the dam are a great break from the straight desert highways, this impressive bridge alone is a sight to see, even in its currently early stage of construction.

After roaming the halls of the vendor village we will be hitting the town now…

RETIREMENT IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE —One day, while going to the store, I passed by a nursing home. On the front lawn were six old ladies lying naked on the grass. I thought this was a bit unusual, but continued on my way to the store.

On my return trip, I passed the same nursing home with the same six old ladies lying naked on the lawn. This time my curiosity got the best of me & I went inside to talk to the Nursing Home Administrator.

‘Do you know there are six ladies lying naked on your front lawn?’

‘Yes,’ she said. ‘They ‘re retired prostitutes, & they’re having a yard sale.’

SA anti-biker/ anti-association laws ruled invalid– Friday, 25 September 2009,South Australia’s highest court has struck down part of the state government’s controversial anti-biker laws, declaring that a control order made against a member of the Finks motorcycle club was void and of no effect.

The Full Court of the Supreme Court today found, by a two to one majority, that a law saying a court must make a control order if it was satisfied a person was a member of a declared criminal organisation was not a valid law in South Australia. Lawyers representing members of the Finks had challenged the constitutional validity of the laws, arguing they were a major breach of personal liberty. Outside court, Craig Caldicott, said the ruling was “a major victory”. “I think it’s a great judgment for my clients,” he said.Mr Caldicott said “from day one” it had been argued that section 14 of the Serious and Organised Crime (Control) Act (SOCCA) was invalid.

“It’s draconian and it’s just basically un-Australian.”

Mr Caldicott said he thought anti-biker/anti-association laws in other states, introduced in the wake of politically motivated law and order hysteria and based on South Australia’s laws, could also be invalid in the wake of the Full Court’s decision.

He said he thought the Rann government, which has pursued a tough on bikers campaign, would “probably try and rush through legislation to try and fix it or will try and appeal it to the High Court”.

“They won’t like the decision and this government’s been very quick to react to anything they don’t like,” he said. The court’s decision “helps the little guys”, Mr Caldicott said. “This is all about freedom of association, this is all about people being able to mix or associate with anyone else that they like.”

The case was brought by two members of the Finks, Sandro Totani and Donald “Duck” Hudson. The court declared the control order against Mr Hudson was invalid while a control order application against Mr Totani was still to be dealt with at the time of the legal challenge to the laws.Under the laws, control orders can stop members of organisations, declared illegal by the state Attorney-General, from associating with fellow members and from attending certain places. The South Australian government introduced the laws last year and declared the Finks a criminal organisation in May.

The SA Attorney General Michael Atkinson claimed that, “organised crime has claimed a victory with the Supreme Court ruling parts of South Australia’s anti-biker laws invalid.”But Atkinson has vowed to win what he and Premier Rann have declared a war, despite losing what the local SA media have described as a ‘legal skirmish’ over the controversial “world-first” laws. “It’s a temporary win for organised crime,” Mr Atkinson told reporters.

“But the Rann government will be back. We are in control and we will amend the legislation as necessary to continue the war. “We don’t feel the least embarrassed or regretful that we took the fight up to the gangs to the very limit and beyond of our constitutional authority.”

Mr Atkinson said despite existing control orders being made null and void by Friday’s judgment, another section of the Act could still be used to seek such orders. But he conceded bikers would now have more avenues to contest control orders than under section 14.1 – which effectively gave magistrates no discretion to refuse an application.

“We as a government, we were always aware of the vulnerabilities of our legislation because as a government we are willing to test the constitutional boundaries in order to take the fight to the outlaw motorcycle gangs,” he said.

Biketoberfest is coming up. Hang on.

NEW DISCOVERY FROM THE BIKERNET ENGLISH DEPARTMENT–The publisher of 17 year old Gearheads Magazine stopped in at the Bikernet Headquarters recently. He told our staff, in no uncertain terms, “You need to ameliorate your vocabulary!”

I thought, “What the hell does he mean?” He threw me a bone in the form of a connection to Dictionary.com. You can sign up for a free word of the day. The first one I received was: ameliorate uh-MEEL-yuh-rayt, transitive verb:
1. To make better; to improve.
intransitive verb:
1. To grow better.

Sample use:Among the pressures provoking these distresses were a father’s financial inadequacy and a growing awareness that, by finding employment himself, he could ameliorate the family’s exiguous circumstances.

BIKERNET CORRESPONDENT IN RENO HOTEL INVESTIGATES BIKERNET ACCESS–I forgot to follow up after the phone call to you from Reno. My hotel advertised free in-room wifi and after trying to check e-mails, I discovered that BIKERNET.COM was blocked with a “pornographic site” warning.

After the WTF moment, I started trying several other random sites as a test. MANY sites were blocked, including planned parenthood’s site as “sex education” as the reason. The list was long.

fireworknbikes

The management even shared that a legislator who was a guest who’d tried to do in-room research on a sex abuse bill he was trying to pass was blocked from his site while there…a mere 2-3 blocks from the senate building, so I figured WTF, who am I to gripe.

Good thing I wasn’t on a deadline, huh? Anyway, just thought you’d wanna know you’re an outlaw in Nevada even when you’re not there…
