FAMED CUSTOM PAINTER CHARLEY HUTTONTO APPEAR WITH PPG AT NSRA NATIONALS–STRONGSVILLE, Ohio ? July 29, 2009 ? Charley Hutton, one of the most popular street rod painters in America, will be signing autographs at the PPG Vibrance Collection? Show Truck display during the 40th annual NSRA Street Rod Nationals August 6 ? 9, at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, KY.
Hutton is well-known in the custom car world and has captured a number of prestigious honors for his work on high-end street rods. His trophy case includes two Ridler Awards, several Street Rod of the Year and Custom Rod of the Year awards along with an America?s Most Beautiful Roadster award. He has also attained television fame through the Discovery Channel?s American Hot Rod show working with legendary custom car builder, the late Boyd Coddington, on Hot Rod TV and The Learning Channel?s Overhaulin?. Hutton began painting cars at 13, completed his first custom car at 15 and by age 20 had opened his own business. He recently opened a new shop, Charley Hutton?s Color Studio in Nampa, Idaho, where he uses PPG Automotive Refinish products exclusively.

BIKERNET REPORTERS SNEAKS INTO H-D NEW MODEL LAUNCH– Thought I’d drop you a line from Harley’s new model launch in Denver. Just came back from our first day of riding the Rocky Mountain roads, and man it was a blast. Harley has some cool new stuff for the 2010 line up and two of the models are pretty tough. On the tech end of things the big change was that they got rid of the spur gear that was causing all the fifth gear whine and have now replaced it with a helical cut design.
THE FAT BOY LOW
Imagine if you took a Fat Boy and crossed it with the Streetbob, that’s what you have here. A combination of flat black, gloss black and brushed chrome finishes give this bike a tougher look than it’s had since Arnold rode it. The low comes from the 24 and 1/4 inch seat height. This is the lowest bike in the Harley-Davidson line and with a redesigned seat, more narrow in the leg area, it should fit anyone pretty easily.
THE DYNA WIDE GLIDE
Again, borrowing style elements from the bobber influence they took the Wide Glide and made it cooler. A bobbed rear fender with now big taillight for starters. They dropped the big rear lens in favor for Stop, Turn, Tails off to each side. The seat height is lower and the tanks are lifted in the front giving it a look of a chop, and let’s not forget the hot rod flame job.
THE HOT ROD BAGGER – ROAD GLIDE CUSTOM
This bike was a blast to ride! Basically what they did was take the success they had with the Street Glide and move that design principal over to the Road Glide. Slammed an inch lower in the rear suspension, stripped of all the extras, small windscreen and an 18 inch front wheel give this bike a killer profile. The 18″ wheel will also be available on the Street Glides this year.
THE ULTRA LIMITED
For the cat who wants more than just the top of the food chain in the touring family, Harley has taken care of most of the add ons you might want after the sale. Heated grips, Anti-Lock breaks, 103″ Engine with oil cooler, Luggage Rack, Premium Tour Pack and Luggage rack liners. Titanium Tone instrument faces and five distinct Ultra Limited badges.
STREET GLIDE TRIKE
In keeping with the less is more trend that has done them so well with other models Harely stripped down the Trike they released last year, giving it a lighter, more sporty look. I didn’t have the chance to ride this yet but the previous year model was a big hit and this will surely find it’s place as well.
So that’s about it for the main line, the other new models were CVO bikes and I didn’t get to ride those so for now, your roving reporter, out!

BACK IN THE BIKERNET HISTORY CLASS– They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot & then once a day it was taken & sold to the tannery…….if you had to do this to survive you were “Piss Poor”
But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn’t even afford to buy a pot……they “didn’t have a pot to piss in” & were the lowest of the low
The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn’t just how you like it, think about how things used to be.
Here are some facts about the 1500s:
Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by June.. However, since they were starting to smell. .. . Brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.
Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the Babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, “Don’t throw the baby out with the Bath water!”
Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying “It’s raining cats and dogs.”
There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That’s how canopy beds came into existence.
The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, “Dirt poor.” The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance-way. Hence: a thresh hold.

In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire.. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme: Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old.
Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, “bring home the bacon.” They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat.
Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.
Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.
Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.
England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus,someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a dead ringer…
And that’s the truth…Now, whoever said History was boring ! ! !

Karlee Cobb (now 15 years old, Mitchell, South Dakota) became the youngest to ever set a record on the Bonneville Salt Flats in 2008, setting 2 land speed records on her Buell Blast, at the age of 14. This painting shows her FOCUS and fierce determination as she heads out to make a pass. Karlee, her sister Erika, and mom Laura Klock are the first mother, daughter, daughter trio in the history of Land Speed Racing to hold records at the same time. If this girl stays focused, who knows what we will see her do next!

COCO AND ICE TEA Special Appearance in the works for Sturgis……..We’re still awaiting the final confirmation with scheduling information but as of today all is looking good for a surprise Sturgis Appearance by CoCo and husband Ice-T at the Bikernet Booth in Sturgis on Saturday, August 8th. The exact times are not yet known but those reading this and in Sturgis can stop by the booth early next week to get more info. The booth is located on the Sturgis Expo Lot at the corners of 4th and Lazalle St.
While in Sturgis CoCo will be releasing her brand new 2010 Motorcycle Calendar. Only 200 calendars will be available there at the booth and CoCo will be signing them as time permits. I’ve included two pages of the calendar in this post to give a sneak peak at how the calendar is looking…

Girls of Bikernet looking for a few good men!–Trista, Jessie, and Donna will be at 4th and Lazalle St. through out the Sturgis Rally selling the new 2010 Girls of Bikernet Calendar. They want you to stop by between the hours of 9am and 6pm to take photos and pick up a calendar. That old one on your wall at home is about to run out and The Girls of Bikernet Calendar starts with September 2009. The Bikernet booth has the hottest girls on Lazalle St. posing for photos everyday.
2Wheelers is the place to be in the evenings!!!–At the 67th Sturgis Rally in 2007, Livia Crisan stopped in to see Arlin and the boys at 2Wheelers and did a surprise photoshoot right on Main Street in front of 2Wheelers wearing her black chaps and thong bikini. Keep an eye on Arlin and the 2Wheelers location this coming week…
Trista, Jesse, and other models are going to be making some surprise visits to get some photos on Main Street. All I can say for sure is it will be after 7pm and before midnight. Check out the Sunday post for photos from 2Wheelers!
RALLY WEEK WELCOME–Have a blast and be careful. I received a report that we lost a Hamster, Bruce Rossmeyer in Colorado. If you’re headed to the Badlands with your I-phone or blackberry and stay on top of Bikernet, we will be featured with our Trophy at the Broken Spoke on Wednesday. Our Banner will fly daily at 2-Wheelers downtown. The Girls of Bikernet are setting up at 4th and Lazelle and we are featured in the Buffalo Chip Gazette.
If you can’t make it to the Rally, stick with Bikernet. We’ll bring you Sam Dixon photography of the hottest girls in the Badlands, and Donna shots with our Bikernet Banner from downtown. We’ll deliver reports and action all week long.
Then, I’m sure we will publish a ride report documenting the road to Sturgis and home. Plus, we’ll continue our 5-Ball Factory Racer techs and deliver features, fiction and content that will rock your world. Never a dull moment here or on the road.
