LETTER TO CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR REGARDING NEW DWI LAW FOR MOTORCYCLISTS–Dear Governor, A representative from the California DMV, Licensing Policy Section, made mention recently that personnel within the DMV are considering the promotion of a law change regarding the DWI laws and motorcycle riders. He said that if this law were passed, a motorcyclist would be declared drunk if he or she were riding with a .04 Blood Alcohol Count.

This letter is to stress my objection to that discriminatory plan. While the .04 BAC has been in place for a number of years for drivers who are operating commercial vehicles, a drunk behind the wheel of a big rig could certainly kill or injure many people in one incident. Even drunks with a .08 BAC driving a car, small truck, or van are responsible for almost half of the deaths on our highways.

If we are going to Profile and Discriminate?why not against drivers of SUV?s ? or against any driver who has already been convicted of DWI ? Or against anyone who was born in Austria or Tahiti ? Or anyone riding bicycles? Are we trying to promote public safety ??? Or are we just thinking about imposing another ?Nanny-Law? against a group that has the least visible amount of voting power.

As a long-time safety instructor involved with all sizes of vehicles, if someone were to promote a .04 DWI being brought against the drivers of ALL VEHICLES, you would have my support. A law like this would not affect me personally, because I am a non-drinker?. And as a motorcycle rider, I am an advocate of straight and sober vehicle operation?.all vehicles.

As a citizen who is concerned with peoples constitutional rights, however, I strongly feel that profiling and discrimination against any one class of person or the drivers of any one class of vehicle, is wrong.

Thank you for your concern,

–John V. Del Santo

We are planning to attend Sturgis to increase awareness of the dangers of distracted driving. We are looking for any way possible to tell my mother’s tragic story in hopes of saving others from our grief.

HINES BEATS KRAWIEC IN AN ALL-HARLEY NHRA FINAL AT SONOMA– Both Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines Riders Lock Up Countdown Playoff Slots

SONOMA, Calif. (July 26, 2009) – Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Andrew Hines defeated his teammate, Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Eddie Krawiec, to win the final round of Pro Stock Motorcycle eliminations at the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Speedway. It was the third consecutive all-Harley V-Rod final round of the 2009 NHRA season, the second win of the season for Hines and the 17th of his career. Krawiec, the defending NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, made his seventh-consecutive final-round appearance at Sonoma, and now leads the Pro Stock Motorcycle standings by 70 points.

?I think right now Eddie and I are riding the best we ever have in the three years we?ve been together on the Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines team,? said Hines. ?We have both really been working on our reaction times, and we are both hungry when we come to the line. The Harley V-Rod is one bad machine, but we prove our point with our riding.?

Krawiec and Hines are also the first Pro Stock Motorcycle racers to qualify for the five-race 2009 Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship. Krawiec qualified following the Mopar Mile High Nationals on July 12, while Hines qualified during eliminations at Sonoma. Only the top 10 points earners in the class will take part in the Countdown playoffs, which begin at the North Carolina Nationals on Sept. 17-20.

For the first time this season, Krawiec led Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying, posting a 6.915-second run in the final round on Saturday to claim the top spot. Hines qualified third with a 6.931-second ET.

Hines started his march through Sunday eliminations with a hot 6.90-second run to defeat Suzuki rider Katie Sullivan, and put up a 6.93 ET in round two after Hector Arana left the line early. Hines used a 6.929 run beat NitroFish.com Suzuki rider Matt Smith (6.999) to advance to the final round for the third event in row.

Krawiec got a free pass in round one with Stone Mountain/Granite Mountain Harley-Davidson/Buell rider Junior Pippin broke at the starting line. Krawiec made a 6.961 pass in round two to beat Rocklin Motorsports Buell rider Matt Guidera, and won in round three when Doug Horne left the line early on the Horne Racing Buell.

?Consistency and confidence are our big advantage right now,? said Krawiec. ?When I go to the line, I?m not thinking about the rider in the other lane. It?s just me, my Harley V-Rod motorcycle, and my lane. If I do my job, I should get a win. And if I don?t win, it?s good to see Andrew in the other lane.?

The final at Sonoma was the 12th time Hines and Krawiec had faced each other at the starting line, each winning six times. Hines had won twice in three final-round matches between the two riders, and he made it three-and-one with an outstanding 0.007-second reaction time and a 6.972 ET to beat Krawiec (0.034/7.014) going away.

After nine events on the 17-race 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule, Krawiec leads the series with 837 points. Hines is second with 767, followed by Smith with 636, and Horne with 580.

The next event on the 2009 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule is the Lucas Oils NHRA Nationals, Aug. 13-16 at Brainerd International Raceway, Brainerd, Minn.

The Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Pro Stock Motorcycle team is sponsored by Matco Tools, Dunlop and S100.

CHANCE TO WIN $10,000 AND SUPPORT KIDS’ HOMES–Bandit and Bikernet was on the board of directors of these homes for over a decade, so this is square business:

I do not normally send mass e-mails, but I thought that this was important enough to write you all. Both Alan and I have been long time supporters of a very special organization called YOUTH SERVICES NETWORK. Since 1985 YSN has operated residential homes in the San Fernando Valley for abused, neglected, and abandoned boys ages 12-18. These boys deserve more than they have gotten in life and that is why I am asking for your support. Some of you have been kind enough to participate in the past and I hope you will again.

Next month is the Third Annual “Survivors Raffle” fundraiser for YSN. It is called a “Survivors Raffle” because the last ticket wins.. We have a total of 300 tickets at $100.00 each. On September 20, 2009 at our annual BBQ at the home of the President of the Board of Directors located in Studio City, the raffle tickets will be drawn out of a bowl and pinned up on a board with 300 spaces. Every 25th ticket will win a prize equal to or greater than the price of the ticket and the last ticket out of the bowl will win $10,000.00.

THAT’S RIGHT – $10,000.00! And only 300 tickets will be sold. At 300 to 1 odds, that?s much better than the lottery. All donations are fully tax deductible and are going to a really fantastic cause. You and your family are welcome to attend the BBQ, but you do not need to be present at the BBQ to win. The boys, staff and members of the YSN Board will all be there.

To buy a ticket or tickets (the more you buy the better chance you have to win), please send your check payable to YOUTH SERVICES NETWORK to Christine Masters, c/o Youth Services Network, 11336 Camarillo Street, Suite 306, Toluca Lake, California 91602. Make sure you include your return address. We will send you your ticket/s, information on the BBQ, and YSN’s non-profit tax ID number. Please also email me to let me know you will be sending a check.

Thank you very much for helping YSN make a difference in these boys’ lives.

Take good care and all the best,

Burnouts are King Friday Night at the Legendary Buffalo Chip–Sturgis, SD (July 24, 2009) Friday night is burnout night at the Chip and you won’t want to miss this one. The Legendary Buffalo Chip is holding its Second Annual Baker Burnout Drags Competition, followed by an audience participation group burnout on Friday, August 7 during the Sturgis Rally. The competition is a raw execution of power, precision and skill is guaranteed to get your motor running.

The high octane, tournament-style Baker Burnout Drags Competition brought to you by Baker Drivetrain and the Legendary Buffalo Chip will come to a head during Friday night’s entertainment line-up. The excitement then continues with the Buffalo Chip Group Burnout. Chipsters gathered from all over the world will be able to engage in adrenalin-pumping, rubber-burning burnout bliss.

This year’s group burnout is sure to be a crowd-pleaser flaunting up to 100 bikes. The steel bridge along the Kinison Playground will be transformed into burnout central as bikes will be set 10 feet in the air and prepped for huge number of bikes smoking their rear tires.

The climax of this year’s group burnout will highlight a 1938 Indian Chief with sidecar, ridden and restored by prominent industry daredevil and foremost authority on Indian Motorcycles, Mike “Kiwi” Tomas. Kiwi Mike is the owner of Kiwi Indian and the leading authority on the restoration of old Indians. Originally from New Zealand, Kiwi Mike learned the tools of the trade early on. In 1988 he started Kiwi Indian in California and has become the dominant force in Indian parts and restoration.

The striking 1938 Indian Chief that Kiwi Mike will be riding was specifically chosen for this event to commemorate the year in which the Sturgis Rally first blazed onto the motorcycle scene. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to observe a 1938 Indian complete a burnout. This historic bike still has plenty of kick and will be a treat to watch as Kiwi Mike performs a number of bold maneuvers including two wheel stunts and circular burnouts. Attendees are encouraged to participate in the Buffalo Chip group burnout. There will be T.V. cameras and numerous photographers documenting the spectacle in an attempt to capture the raw essence of the burnout. This footage will be provided to the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum for inclusion in the exhibit to pay homage to the event, which will undoubtedly be emblazoned in the memories of those who witness it.

Everybody loves a great burnout. Back and bigger than ever you won’t want to miss this year’s spectacle!

SCOTT JACOBS ATTENDS H-D ANNUAL DEALER SHOW–If our results at the Harley-Davidson Dealer Convention over the weekend are any indication, the economic recovery is in full swing. Scott Jacobs? Studios? sales were up over 300% compared to last year?s show.

A huge bright spot was the new official Sturgis painting this year (which many of you have been following its progress on our website) and now you can finally order the piece. The edition is limited to a mere 69 regular (27 x 18 image size) and 69 large (36 x 24) giclee canvases as this is the 69th Anniversary of the Sturgis Rally.

If you own last year?s IN YOUR DREAMS, depicting Scott?s daughter Olivia, we will try our best to match your number on second piece in the Sturgis Series: FACE TO FACE.

FACE TO FACE depicts Scott?s 76 year old dad as the model (it was a total shock to him) and it is the first painting he has ever been a part of. Also Scott painted a Screamin? Eagle and a dresser for the first time. More unusual is that this is Scott?s first ever Mt. Rushmore painting in 17 years as Harley?s official artist.

Scott?s father will also hand sign the canvas. Price for the regular framed is $895 and the large framed is $1950. We will be showing the work at Rally from the following locations: Black Hills Harley-Davidson, Sturgis Harley-Davidson and with the Motor Co. at Rapid City Civic Center.

Lastly, the new book has been delayed a bit until probably Sept. so no orders will be processed until then. Thank you for your patience. Scott took the photo attached from the display in Sturgis on his iphone so the quality is lacking but the painting is exceptional. HDrecall

H-D, BMW, DealerLeather Announce Recalls–Three companies doing business in the motorcycle industry have posted recall notices with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON CVO ROAD GLIDE

Harley-Davidson is recalling about 1,759 units of its 2009 FLTRSE3 CVO Road Glide motorcycles equipped with Blade rear wheel accessory kits.

The OEM says some wheels underwent a secondary heat treatment process which may have caused a crack in the wheel and result in wheel failure.

Dealers are asked to remove the rear wheel and inspect the manufacturer’s code. Wheels that underwent a secondary heat treatment process are to be replaced free of charge.

BMW

BMW R1200 RT

BMW is recalling its 2007-2009 R1200 RT motorcycles for brake lines that may fail.

BMW says, due to the routing and assembly tolerances of the front brake lines, it is possible for the lines to be under strain. In combination with vibration during riding, the brake lines could develop a leak, expel brake fluid and render the front brakes inoperable.BMW has not yet announced a remedy or notification schedule.

DEALERLEATHER HELMETS

EBL Enterprises, Inc. is recalling its 500 Series helmet sold via its DealerLeather operation. The action involves 800 units.

The helmets, produced between April 1, 2008 and May 31, 2008, fail to conform to the impact attenuation requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218 and may allow serious injury to the wearer in the event of a crash.

EBL Enterprises says it will offer a full refund or replace any noncompliant helmet with a helmet that meets federal standards.
