Hang on,

This is rapidly turning into a hot emotional summer. Three weeks ago the stars collided and controversy ensued. The regulators over-heated their chambers and attacked motorcyclists the following week–gotta pick on someone. Then this week rolls in with dark economic omens. Good god.

No matter what happens next, it will be a helluva ride. I hinted at some announcements regarding the run to Sturgis, but the economy is still holding court on our findings. We are also investigating a cross-country run to pick up the Assalt Weapan at Accurate Engineering in Dotham, Alabama. We’ll touch the girls at the Smoke Out mansion, Deep South Choppers, the Alamo, the Bikernet Weather Bureau in Alabama, Lucky Devil’s Metal Works in Houston for the Bikernet Root Beer Float Bobber and peel across the Texas plains to the Billet Bar in the Arizona desert for a cold one, then back to the coast.

Just three reasons to stop at the Billet Bar.

We’ll see. The economy dictates our every move. Let’s hit the news:

ducati

PORTLAND DEALER BREAKS DUCATI MONTHLY SALES RECORD–ECONOMY AIN’T ALL BAD–Ducati North America announces that Portland, Ore.-based dealership MotoCorsa sold 61 bikes in June, beating its own previous record for the most Ducatis sold in a single month.

MotoCorsa had launched an initiative to beat the record of 50 units it set in 2007. “Progetto 51” began in early June with a mission to sell 51 Ducati motorcycles in the month. The dealership ended up surpassing the target by 20 percent, in the face of a struggling Portland economy, which Ducati?s claims has the second-highest unemployment rate in the country.

?The program really turned into a community effort as MotoCorsa employees and local Ducatisti helped the program along by purchasing bikes and even trading up for newer model year Ducatis,? Michael Lock, CEO of Ducati North America, said in a press release. ?We congratulate MotoCorsa on its record sales month and appreciate Portland?s Ducatisti and their passion for the brand.?

Pushing MotoCorsa to number 61 was local resident Ryan Dalling, a regular MotoCorsa customer who traded in his 2008 Ducati 848 and purchased a new 2009 Multistrada S so he could enjoy touring with his wife.

?We closed out the month with 61 new Ducatis,? said Arun Sharma, General Manager of MotoCorsa. ?This is a feat we could have never accomplished without the dedication and enthusiasm of the entire MotoCorsa family, both staff and customers alike.?

CARLISLE BIKE FEST TOMORROW–MITCHELL, SD ? The Krew from Klock Werks Kustom Cycles (Mitchell, SD) will be in Carlisle, PA attending the Carlisle Bike Fest, Friday, July 17-Saturday, July 19. They will be offering their TRY it before you BUY it FREE FLARE windshield demos and FREE FLARE windshield installs! Recently named 2009 V-Twin Accessory of the Year, the FLARE Windshield has revolutionized the industry in regards to the Batwing Fairing models and Road Glides. Also at their truck you will find nationally-known bike builder Brian Klock and land speed record holder Laura Klock! They would love to meet you!

The Patented FLARE Windshield was developed at Klock Werks out of a desire/need for stability at highway speeds and for racing on the Bonneville Salt Flats. The “hips” at the outer edge of the shield re-route the wind to add downforce to the front of the bike, which aids stability vs. using a stock shield. The “flip” at the top of the FLARE is designed to kick the air up and then allow it to flow back as “clean” air for the rider. The absolute most important effect is added downforce as verified by testing in the A2 Wind Tunnel in Mooresville, N.C. The results found that with a stock, short windshield there was 30-35 lbs of measurable lift at highway speeds, meaning your bike is a KITE. Rocking the FLARE adds 10-15 lbs of downforce on the front of the bike at the same speeds. Why not add a spoiler to the front of your bike? Downforce is the biggest advantage of the FLARE, no competitor piece offers this level of performance!

A MESSAGE FROM THE BIKERNET MORAL AUTHORITY–There once was a religious young woman who went to Confession. Upon entering the confessional, she said, ‘Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.’

The priest said, ‘Confess your sins and be forgiven.’

The young woman said, ‘Last night my boyfriend made mad passionate love to me seven times.’

The priest thought long and hard and then said, ‘Squeeze seven lemons into a glass and then drink the juice.’

The young woman asked, ‘Will this cleanse me of my sins?’

The priest said, ‘No, but it will wipe that smile off of your face.’

The Annual Motorcyclist Advisory Council (MAC) survey —is once again seeking on-highway rider feedback and input. Answers provided will be used to help state and federal highway administrators better understand and plan for the needs of motorcyclists. The survey can be accessed at http://tinyurl.com/ovzduo until August 1, 2009.

Queensland, Australia: A new series of motorcycle safety initiatives– that target novice riders is the latest strategy adopted announced by Transport Minister Rachel Nolan to help combat the state’s rising motorcycle fatality rate. The new initiatives will include a Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAM Scheme) permitting RE class license holders to only ride motorcycles suitable for their level of riding ability and experience.

Motorcycle riding is growing in popularity with over 150,000 motorcycles registered in the state. Under the strategy, motorcycle riders are also encouraged to protect themselves by wearing the correct safety gear to reduce the chances of severe injuries if they are involved in a crash. These changes went into effect on July 1, 2009 and failure to comply with the new rules may result in fines and demerit points.

Trista2
Krsytal Ann, the 18 year old au pair from Canada, stands topless near a Larry McCullough Custom from McCullough Custom Cycles in Elkridge, MD.

THE FINAL GIRLS OF BIKERNET 2010 PHOTO SESSION–Yesterday I wrapped up shooting of the Girls of Bikernet 2010 Calendar in Louisville, KY. The last girl to shoot for the calendar was 21-year-old hair stylist Trista Mae from Switz City, Indiana. You actually had a photo of Trista in your Thursday news with the Broken Spoke Campground article. Trista is the cute blonde who was working the pool bar at the Spoke last year. Her hair color is different this year and I think she’s looking even better in her bikini this year.

Trista will not be at the Broken Spoke Campground this year. All week Trista will be in the Girls of Bikernet Booth at 4th and Lazalle St. from 10am-6pm daily. Trista will be signing calendars and we’ll have a special edition poster of Trista at Sturgis too…. only 225 posters will be available so stop by early in the week to make sure you get one.

I want to thank Derby City Customs for letting Trista and I come into their shop on Saturday and shoot fr a couple hours. Operations Manager Tony Stewart and the rest of the guys there were very accomodating. If you’re in the area this coming weekend they will be having their open house at the shop on 112 W. Jefferson St. in downtown Louisville, KY.

I also want to say thanks to Fred Bramblett who answered my call for help in the Thursday News looking for a bike to shoot Trista on. Fred was over 70 miles away and with a very sketchy weather forecast it didn’t work out to use his Arlen Ness Custom. I’m saving his info though so that hopefully Trista and I can make it out to Fred’s place for a shoot after Sturgis.

Calendar artwork for the Girls of Bikernet Calendar will be finished tomorrow and the printers get their hands on the files tomorrow night…. Everyone should check out the Thursday News for a full release of all the girls in the calendar. I’m already getting emails from people asking me to make sure they get a copy….

KRAWIEC BEATS HINES AT DENVER FOR THIRD WIN OF SEASON–Screamin? Eagle Teammates Lead NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Points Chase

MORRISON, Colo. (July 12, 2009) ? Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines rider Eddie Krawiec won his third NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle event of the season, defeating his Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines teammate, Andrew Hines, in an all-Harley-Davidson final at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway. It was the second-consecutive NHRA event to feature both Screamin? Eagle V-Rods in the final round of eliminations ? Hines won when the pair faced off on June 28 in Norwalk, Ohio. With his victory at Morrison, Krawiec extends his NHRA Full Throttle series lead to 88 points over second-place Hines.

?Three wins and six-consecutive finals after going last year without a win. That?s pretty amazing,? said Krawiec, the defending Pro Stock Motorcycle champion. ?The Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines team is really clicking right now. Winning over your teammate is the best victory I can get because we are so competitive with each other.?

Hines qualified second for the event with a run of 7.342 seconds, while Krawiec?s best pass of 7.363 was good for fourth in qualifying. Hector Arana lead all qualifiers with an elapsed time of 7.319 seconds.

Both Screamin? Eagle/Vance & Hines riders advanced through Sunday eliminations with the benefit of opponent?s starting-line fouls, as eight of the 15 races during Sunday?s action were decided by red lights. Hines got red-light wins over Suzuki rider Jim Underdahl and NitroFish.com Buell rider Matt Smith in the first two rounds, and defeated Team Scream Suzuki rider Craig Treble in round three with a 7.335-second pass that would be the quickest run of the elimination rounds. Hines was on the verge of a red light himself, with a perfect reaction time of 0.000 seconds in round two and a 0.004 start in round three.

?I told everyone I was playing with fire at the starting line,? said Hines. ?But Matt Smith is right behind me in points and had just made a really quick run, and I knew it would take everything I had to beat him in round two. The perfect light was a little quicker than I wanted, but it worked out when he went early.?

Krawiec dispatched MB Machining Buell rider Mike Berry in round one, and got red-light wins over Doug Horne on the Horne Racing Buell in round two and Arana in round three. Krawiec had a reaction time of 0.004 seconds in the second round, his closest brush with a red light before the final.

Hines was too quick at the line in the final, leaving 0.008 seconds early to hand the win to Krawiec, whose reaction time was just 0.001 seconds.

?I don?t try to kill the tree unless I need to, but today we had equal bikes and in the final round I knew the best reaction time would probably win, so I went for it,? said Krawiec. ?I owed Andrew one after Norwalk anyway. I think all the red lights today are just an indication of the close competition in the class right now.?

After eight events on the 17-race 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule, Krawiec leads the series with 739 points. Hines is in second position with 651, followed by Smith in third with 559, Treble with 535 and Horne with 506 points.

The next event on the 2009 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule is the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals, July 24-25 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

The Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines Pro Stock Motorcycle team is sponsored by Matco Tools, Dunlop and S100.

BUB 7 Stealth EPA compliant Bagger mufflers–GRASS Valley, California based manufacturer BUB Enterprises has added some 140 plus new part numbers already this year, but, potentially, none may prove to be more significant in the long run than their new BUB 7 Stealth mufflers.

Said to “represent the finest quality in EPA compliant sound reduction mufflers” they have been fully designed and engineered in-house and are a product of the massive R&D investment that owner Denis Manning has made in being able to “keep BUB out front”.

Described as being “neither too loud nor too quiet”, the company is saying that “our BUB 7 Stealth mufflers provide the perfect balance of 50 state legal sound, outstanding performance, and the tonal sound quality that riders look for on their Milwaukee V-twins.”

With so many issues continuing to surround exhaust usage on motorcycles, issues which, if the City of Boston is anything to go by, are only going to get tougher for the aftermarket exhaust industry. BUB say they developed and tested their ‘Stealth’ mufflers specifically to meet the requirements of the EPA’s Title 40, part 205, subparts D E, which requires on-highway exhaust systems to be under 80 db(A) for most set-up configurations on 95-09 FLs.

BUB’s Stealths are 4 inches in diameter, with a standard length of 30 inches. Mufflers are available in chrome or black ceramic finish with chrome or black Teflon coated slash-cut end caps. Mufflers have the option of two mounting positions – slash-up or slash-down. They can be bought directly from BUB (only) as quiet/EPA legal replacement mufflers that will retro-fit all BUB 7 and/or other aftermarket true dual exhaust systems requiring 2 inch diameter muffler inlets.

However, they are also available as BUB 7 Stealth slip-on mufflers. Stealth muffler slip-on sets are quiet/EPA compliant mufflers that fit all new or existing BUB Standard True Dual headers, as well as OEM headers and other aftermarket brand true dual exhaust systems that require or have 1 3/4 inch diameter muffler inlets.

Counterfeit Products Still a Growing Problem– While motorcycle dealers who purchase vehicles, parts, garments and accessories from licensed brand representatives are largely protected from the trade in counterfeit goods, the growing trend of Internet purchasing by consumers gives criminal enterprises a lucrative outlet for the sale of pirated goods.

A new European Commission report shows that seizures of counterfeit goods smuggled into the European Union (E.U.) in 2008 more than doubled the seizures of 2007.

The European Commission says customs authorities across the 27 E.U. member states seized 178 million fake items in 2008, up 125 percent from 79 million in 2007. China remained the main source of counterfeit goods coming into the E.U., accounting for 54 percent of the total in 2008.

Although pirated DVDs, CDs and cigarettes were the most prevalent fake goods seized in Europe, the global motorcycle industry is no stranger to the problem.

The Federation of Asian Motorcycle Industries (FAMI) estimates that 5 percent to 7 percent of all motorcycle spare parts traded on the open market in its member states are counterfeit, and that 94 percent of those fake items were manufactured in Asian nations.

FAMI’s membership consists of seven motorcycle industry associations in Asia, including ASIS (Indonesia), MASAAM (Malaysia), MDPPA (the Philippines), SMCTA (Singapore), TAIA (Thailand), TTVMA (Taiwan) and JAMA (Japan). FAMI is a member of the International Motorcycle Manufacturers Association (IMMA), an organization also including motorcycle industry associations from the United States, Europe, India, Australia and Canada.

FAMI says it has aimed to stamp out intellectual property rights violations by combining a task force, greater law enforcement efforts and a multinational marketing campaign designed to educate consumers in each country. The organization created an Intellectual Property Rights Task Force five years ago in response to observations that the greatest number of motorcycle-related knockoff products come from the nations represented by its members.

In June 2008, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), a body representing the interests of Japan’s four main motorcycle manufacturers, created a committee to focus on intellectual property rights. The committee’s purpose is to create measures to help combat vehicle design imitation and the proliferation of counterfeit parts, create agreements/treaties banning the proliferation of counterfeit parts and imitation products, and promote international cooperation concerning global patent rights through partnerships in the U.S., Europe, China and South Korea.

The U.S. this year placed 12 countries on a “Priority Watch” list concerning inadequacies in intellectual property rights enforcement and protection. The countries on the list include China, Russia, Algeria, Argentina, Canada, Chile, India, Indonesia, Israel, Pakistan, Thailand and Venezuela.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development estimates that global trade in fake products is worth about $200 billion.

sheetmetalbook

WOLFGANG BOOK OF THE MONTH– Sheet Metal Fabrication Basics #4-3081

Sheet Metal Fabrication Basics gives the reader the knowledge needed to shape sheet metal without the need for expensive power tools. The reader needs only a simple shop equipped with the most basic of tools. If the first Ferraris were built using only wooden mallets and tree stumps, nearly any sheet metal project can be fabricated with only hammers, dollies and bags of shot.

Master craftsman Rob Roehl from the shop of Donnie Smith, explains the types of steel and aluminum that are best suited to motorcycle projects, how to plan and layout a project, and how to stretch and shrink sheet metal without a power hammer or a Pullmax.

The key is planning, and then shaping primarily by stretching. Eventually the various panels must be joined through careful welding. And though many professionals use TIG equipment, there?s no reason you can?t weld both steel and aluminum with gas welding.

Start to finish projects include the creation of an air cleaner cover, a seat pan, and a complete fender. The book covers a wide range of techniques, from hand stretching with a hammer and a bag of shot, to shrinking with a small hand operated shrinker/stretcher. Rob also covers the correct use of the hammer and dolly, and the way an English wheel can be used, both to shape metal and to smooth out the lumps and bumps left by typical hammer work.

You can learn to fabricate sheet metal. All you need is the raw material, the sincere desire to learn and a copy of this new Sheet Metal Fabrication Basics book from Wolfgang Publications. 144 pages long, 100% color, and over 350 photos.

Available from Wolfgang Publications, order by mail at PO Box 223, Stillwater, MN. By phone at 651-275-0194, or on the web at www.wolfpub.com, priced at $27.95 + $5.50 S&H.
