DRAG SPECIALTIES BLUE RIDGE RUN ATTRACTS DEALERS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY–ASHEVILLE, North Carolina June 3rd through June 6th, 2007.The second Annual Drag Specialties Dealer Ride was, once again, a huge hit with dealers, vendors and Drag Specialties employees. For 2007 the ride was held in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and was based out of the Crown Plaza Resort-Asheville.

2007 saw 143 attendees from across the country arrive in Asheville on Sunday June 3rd and take part in a truly wonderful week. An open house held at the Drag Specialties Flat Rock, NC distribution center, had dealers interacting directly with an impressive list of vendors brought in for the week. Dealers could visit each Drag Specialties vendor personally and ask questions, discuss future product developments or catch up on the latest each company has to offer.

On Monday and Tuesday, each participant could choose from two pre-selected loops through the Blue Ridge Mountains. The first was a slower paced, scenic ride from Asheville up to Johnson City, Tennessee, and then down the famous Blue Ridge Parkway with a stop in Boone, NC for lunch. This loop gave wonderful views of the mountains and traveled across the highest elevation on the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River.

The second choice was a trip through Maggie Valley and over to Deal’s Gap, home of US 129 or better known as The Tail of the Dragon. Maybe the most famous motorcycling road in the United States, The Dragon boasts 318 curves in 11 miles and is a demanding stretch for any rider. Hugging Fontana Lake and the surrounding mountains, The Dragon gave everyone spectacular vistas and many photo opportunities. This loop ran across a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway as well.

Also of note was a side trip to the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, North Carolina. Every Blue Ridge Run participant who visited was overwhelmed and amazed at Dale Walksler’s devotion and commitment to preserving the history of American made motorcycles. The museum has an impressive collection of Harleys, Indians and other rare bikes manufactured in the United States and is a must see for any rider.

Other events included dinner each night, various awards for the week and plenty of time for each participant to gather and catch up with old friends or make new ones in the industry. With an already planned 3rd annual trip set for 2008, the Drag Specialties Dealer Ride is a “must do” on anyone’s yearly calendar.

OCC CLAN ACCUSED OF BANKRUPTCY FRAUD–1 of 3 Orange County Ironworks LLC on Stone Castle Road in Rock Tavern, the Teutuls other family business, has been accused of bankruptcy fraud.

Poughkeepsie, Three members of the Teutul family of Orange County Choppers fame defrauded the creditors of their family’s other business, according to a complaint filed Friday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

The complaint accuses Paul Teutul Sr. and his sons, Paul Teutul Jr. and Daniel Teutul, of engineering the fraudulent bankruptcy of O.C. Iron Works Inc. in order to avoid paying the company’s creditors.

The bankruptcy fraud complaint is similar to a civil lawsuit seeking monetary damages. The complaint doesn’t name a dollar amount, but court papers suggest the Teutuls and the iron works business could be on the hook for $1.3 million or more if they lose.

The complaint is not related to Orange County Choppers, the reality television phenomenon that launched the Teutuls to stardom. Instead, it focuses on the steel fabrication and erection business Paul Teutul Sr. built before he started building bikes.

According to court papers, Paul Teutul Sr. transferred that business to Paul Teutul Jr. The business was called O.C. Iron Works. Paul Sr. continued to serve as a consultant.

Paul Jr. then sold the assets of the business to Orange County Ironworks LLC, which is owned by his brother, Daniel Teutul.

According to the complaint filed by Bankruptcy Trustee Tom Genova, the Teutuls systematically moved the equipment, employees, accounts and other assets of the steel fabrication business O.C. Iron Works to a new company, Orange County Ironworks LLC, but the new company didn’t pay fair compensation. The Teutuls then had O.C. Iron Works file for bankruptcy, leaving creditors out in the cold.

The complaint also names Orange County Ironworks LLC as a defendant.

BAR OWNER DOUBTS FIGHT OVER MOTORCYCLE LEAD TO MURDER–Harris County homicide detectives are investigating the death of Clarence Cambron Jr., 47, who was found dead in his home early Friday after a fight outside a bar in south Houston.

Sheriff’s officials initially reported that Cambron had kicked over a Harley-Davidson motorcycle after he was thrown out of the Almeda Depot bar in the 14000 block of Almeda. According to sheriff’s officials, a man inside a nearby grocery store then got into a fight with Cambron.Cambron was found dead at 5 a.m. Friday by his father at their home in the 14000 block of Papdosa, less than a mile from the bar.

Lt. John Martin, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said the case is under investigation.

“We have spoken with the guy who had his motorcycle knocked over,” Martin said. “At this point, no charges have been filed. It will probably have to go to the DA’s office.”

The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine an official cause of death.

MAN WHO CRASHED CAR INTO BIKER SENTENCED–DAYTONA BEACH — A 21-year-old Daytona Beach man involved in a hit-and-run crash that left a motorcyclist without his lower left leg was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in prison on several felony charges.

Ryan Mark Howell had been erroneously released from the Volusia County Branch Jail for a drug trafficking charge without posting bail — and was driving a stolen sport utility vehicle — when a Daytona Beach police officer pulled behind him on March 6, 2006.

As the officer got a look at the tag from behind, Howell turned onto Nova Road without yielding to other traffic, police said. He struck motorcyclist Jay Fife in the intersection and kept going. Howell was caught after he fled, according to court records and police.

Fife, an active rock climber and athlete, now lives in Arizona, where he attends nursing school. The 34-year-old Seattle native showed Circuit Judge William Parsons the prosthetic leg he wears and asked for a sentence that would protect others from harm.

“My life isn’t over,” he said later.Six weeks before he slammed into Fife, Howell was released in error from the jail for time served after he entered a plea in a drug possession case, even though he had the open trafficking charge and should have been held on $150,000 bail, said his attorney, Michael Lambert. “In my opinion, I would say they are responsible,” he said later.

“It’s unclear as to why Mr. Howell was released without posting bond,” court spokeswoman Molly Justice said.

Why is it important? Well, to be honest, it’s what helps “foot the bill”, so to speak. “In the case of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, corporate sponsors bring well in excess of $300,000 annually in cash, along with nearly the same amount in in-kind contributions, all of which are used to off-set the expense incurred in hosting the Rally for our 500,000-plus guests each year. More importantly, sponsors bring a whole new dimension to the Rally,” according to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally’s sponsorship agent, Ronda Gusinsky, President of OutSource Solutions, Inc.

So, what is sponsorship? Here’s an example. Let’s say that you’re a stock car racing fan and you’re asked to name your favorite driver. Dollars to donuts, my guess is that you’d quickly name your favorite driver, followed by the number and “brand” prominently displayed on the car he drives. That “branding” is sponsorship.

Sponsorship is essentially a cash fee or in-kind contribution paid to a property in return for access to the commercial potential associated with that property. Simply put, it’s “relationship marketing”, a partnership is formed between a corporation and event, like the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, that provides the corporation with opportunities to create awareness, increase brand loyalty, drive sales, showcase products, etc. In return, the event receives benefits such as funding, product or services. “And, if done correctly, the relationship itself grows in a mutually beneficial way for both entities,” Gusinsky adds.

“We have about a dozen and a half national and regional brands as corporate partners of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. ASE, Ford Motor Company and Harley-Davidson Motor Company were on board for the 60th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in 2000. Joining in 2001 were Jack Daniel’s and Pierce/Medtec. In 2002, Snap-on came on board. In 2003, local Sturgis business, Tom’s T’s. In 2004, GEICO Motorcycle, Coca-Cola and Budweiser. Da Bus, Ultra Wheel Company and South Dakota Pork Producers Council – Pork. The Other White Meat – came in 2005, followed by SONY Electronics in 2006. And, this year, we are pleased to welcome Alltel Wireless, the Official World Championship of Custom Bike Building and PrairieWave Communications, our local media partner, to this prestigious slate. These are some of the most recognized brands in the world, and we’re very pleased that they have chosen to make an investment in the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally,” Gusinsky continued.
