PINK PLASTIC FLAMINGO FACES EXTINCTION–The day Mayor Dean Mazzarella turned 40, he got a surprise. “After I woke up and went out for my morning run, I came back and there were 40 pink flamingos in my front lawn,” Mazzarella recalled. “Someone had put them there as a joke.”

Now that he’s 49 – “the same age as the pink flamingo,” he notes – he hopes both he and the iconic lawn ornament that his city claims as its own will still be around next year to celebrate 50.

But the original version of the plastic flamingo may be singing its swan song after inspiring countless pranks – and being alternately celebrated as a tribute to one of nature’s most graceful creatures and derided as the epitome of American pop culture kitsch.

Union Products Inc. stopped producing flamingos and other lawn ornaments at its Leominster factory in June, and is going out of business Nov. 1 – a victim of rising expenses for plastic resin and electricity, as well financing problems.The small privately held firm has been in talks with a pair of rival lawn ornament makers interested in buying the molds and resuming production of the flamingos, designed in 1957 by local son Don Featherstone.

“We think the flamingo will go on,” Keith Marshall, Union Products’ chief financial officer, said at the company’s aging brick factory, where just a few years ago more than 100 employees churned out flamingos by the millions.Just a couple workers were still around to wrap up business. At the front desk stood a lone flamingo with the words “Happy 50th birthday” written with a black marker on the side, symbolizing hope that the flamingo will rise phoenix-like from the ashes to be reborn.

“I don’t think the pink flamingo is dead at all,” said the mayor of the city. “But whatever happens, he was born here – that can’t be taken away from us.”

AVON TYRES QUESTION OF THE WEEK–Did you ever feel like you are literally watching dollar bills fly out the back of your bike as your tire wears down. Listed below are some contributing factors.

Speed
“Speed Kill” – at least in tire life. The faster you go the harder your tire works and the hotter the temperature of the tread gets. Slow down a little and enjoy the scenery and you’ll be surprised by your increased mileage. Good tire pressure will also help gain more miles on your tire.

Road Surface
Rough road surfaces will punish your tire and lead to a shorter life span. Some road surfaces like the ones in Alaska have shale which are like riding on glass shards. And in Florida the roads have a mixture of fine shell which cuts into the tires and again shortens tire life span.

Temperature
YOu may have noticed your tires get better mileage in spring and fall than summer. This is because the temperature of the road in the summer (especially in states like Arizona, New Mexico) gets very hot and again affects the life of the tire. Again tire pressure is critical in this goal to achieving more mileage.

ROGUE HALLOWEEN

HALLOWEEN JOKE OF THE YEAR–An extremely modest woman was in the hospital for a series of tests,the last of which had left her bodily systems extremely upset. Upon making several false alarm trips to the bathroom, she decided the latest episode was another false alarm and stayed put. She suddenly filled the bed with diarrhea and was embarrassed beyond her ability to remain rational.

In a complete loss of composure she jumped out of bed, gathered up the bed sheets, and threw them out the hospital window.

A drunk was walking by the hospital when the sheets landed on him. He started yelling, cursing, and swinging his arms violently trying to get the unknown things off, and ended up with the soiled sheets in a tangled pile at his feet.

As the drunk stood there, unsteady on his feet, staring down at the sheets, a hospital security guard, (barely containing his laughter), who had watched the whole incident, walked up and asked,”What the heck is going on here?”

The drunk, still staring down replied, ” I think I just beat the shit out of a ghost. “

HINES RIDES SCREAMIN’ EAGLE V-ROD EVENT WIN EN ROUTE TO TAKING OVER NHRA PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE POINTS LEAD–LAS VEGAS (Oct. 29, 2006) – Andrew Hines and the Screamin’ Eagle/ Vance & Hines V-Rod Harley-Davidson team now like The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. They really don’t have a reason not to like it now. Sunday was that good for the team.

Hines rode his way back into the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle points lead with a victory Sunday during the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals. Hines started the event with a 27-point gap between him and first place rider Antron Brown.

Hines is leaving the event with a 37-point lead and his first career Las Vegas victory.

“This has not been one of my favorite tracks because the last two years we blew up the engine in the early rounds when we were leading the points with a championship on the line,” Hines said. “But I think the casinos are going to love our team tonight because I think we’re all happy about breaking that streak. This was a great weekend for the entire team.”

Hines faced teammate GT Tonglet in the final round. It’s the first final round appearance for Tonglet since the Memphis event in August 2005.

The runner-up finish also helped Tonglet move back into the top 10 in the NHRA point standings.

“We had one goal in mind for the last two races and that was to get back into the top 10,” Tonglet said. “We’ve struggled a bit this season but we’ve made some good strides lately and this was such a good weekend for both bikes. It’s a relief to be back in the top 10 and now we have to do what it takes to keep it through the last race of the season.”

Tonglet beat Chip Ellis in the first round with a 7.228-second pass at 182.60 mph over Ellis’ red-light foul at the starting light. He beat No. 1 qualifier Shawn Gann in the second round with a 7.352 at 178.57 over Gann’s red light. Tonglet then beat Geno Scali in the semifinals with a 7.191 at 184.95 over Scali’s foul.

Hines topped Tom Bradford in the first round with a 7.088 at 188.44 over Bradford’s red light foul. Hines moved on to beat former points leader Antron Brown with a 7.151 at 186.00 over Brown’s foul before he beat Ryan Schnitz with a 7.126 at 187.42 to Schnitz’s foul.

Hines earned his third win in five final rounds this season and seventh career victory with a track record pass. Hines recorded a record 7.080 pass at 188.65 to take the win over Tonglet’s 7.310 at 181.91.

“Las Vegas has been a tough city for us,” Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. “We’ve struggled there and we knew we could not let that happen this time. This was such a successful turnaround compared to the last few years here and it’s a great way to be able to head into the final race of the season.

“We wanted to be in the position to run for the championship at the season finale and we did that this weekend. The team has worked very hard to make it all happen and both riders did their jobs too.”

Hines gave credit to Terry Vance, his mentor and dad’s friend in partner in racing for more than 30 years.

“Terry talked to me a lot and really hammered the point about being inside a box before making each run,” Hines said. “He’s been so instrumental in helping me become a better rider at the starting line and I think it made the difference this weekend.”

Now Hines is looking to earn his third championship in less than five years of professional drag racing.

“Right now we’re clawing tooth and nail to get every point we can,” Hines said. “You have to be on your best game, especially this time of year, because everyone is aiming for the final race wins and the championship.”

The last time Hines got past the first round at this track was 2003. This year, he’s leaving happy.

“The bike ran so well all weekend, it was on a rail,” Hines said. “The best pass of the day came in the final round and that was good enough for the track record. The team made an extraordinary effort. My dad (team owner Byron Hines) was so proud of the crew and what they all accomplished this weekend.”

The season finale of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing series is the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Pomona (Calif.) Raceway, Nov. 9-12.

OREGON PAC STEPS UP–Last Friday, October 20th, the Oregon Governor?s Advisory Board forMotorcycle Safety had the final deliberations of the Motorcycle SafetyFoundation’s request to offer DMV skills test waivers. The AdvisoryBoard was originally charged by the Oregon Traffic Safety Commission(OTSC) to evaluate the proposal and issue a recommendation. Hearings anddeliberations have been ongoing for over a year. After a full andthorough hearing the committee has unanimously recommended that thestate of Oregon not accept the MSF program as an approved course for DMVskills waiver.

This meeting, postponed from September 15th, dealt with the operationsside of MSF’s proposal. Despite the fact that this was the last chancefor the MSF to speak to its case, no one from the MSF showed up at thismeeting. Even Betsy Earls the MSF attorney in Oregon was not inattendance. There was one woman present who stated she was CounselorEarls? assistant.

There was no public testimony taken, there was only a report from ODOTTransportation Safety Division Director Troy Costales. Under Oregonstatute they are required to produce an Operational Impact Statement.According to ODOT, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation never produced abusiness plan, despite numerous requests for such a plan. Mr. Costalesstated that as recently as a few weeks ago that a written request to MSFwas made for this plan but no answer was received. Without therequested information from MSF, ODOT was forced to produce a veryambiguous report.

Other issues were raised regarding the operations ofthe request from MSF. For example, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’soriginal proposal stated that no funds would be requested from ODOT. Yetduring the slideshow presented by Dr. Ochs, it was stated that fundswould be requested. MSF?s representative was given the opportunity tospeak and the representative from the MSF present stated that she didn?tthink she was authorized to speak for the MSF.

The OTSC meeting that will take up this issue is Tuesday, November 28that 9:00AM in Salem. The meeting is usually held at the TransportationSafety Division office. Confirmation of this will follow at a later time.
