THE SECOND ANNUAL AMERICA?S RIDE TO BENEFIT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER MIRACLES FOUNDATION ROARS ACROSS AMERICA–Hundreds Of Motorcycle Riders Unite To Ride From Los Angeles To New York,August 31-September 11, 2003. The Second Annual America?s Ride to benefit the World Trade Center Miracles Foundation will assemble hundreds of motorcycle riders on a coast-to-coast journey designed to assist and build awareness for those who have been forgotten in the tragedy of 9/11, and to involve and unite the entire country in a great cause.

The twelve-day event joins American?s from all walks of life together to help, heal and unify our nation. The event will include celebrity riders such as Chris Judd, Dishwalla, Madusa, Tyson Beckford and Hulk Hogan, as well as people directly affected by 9/11 and hundreds of America?s Ride participants. The ride begins in Los Angeles on August 31 and ends at Ground Zero in New York City on September 11. The trip includes stops in Denver, Colo., Kansas City, Kan., Danville, Ill., New Castle, Pen., Shanksville, Pen., and Washington D.C.

America?s Ride was created as a fundraising event for the World Trade Center Miracles Foundation. The foundation is a source of aid for those individuals whose lives were challenged by the 9/11 attacks and its aftermath. They collect funds for present needs, while building additional resources to prepare for the future.

?It is was my hope to put together a charitable organization that would make a difference based upon the principle of ?people helping people in need,?? said Mitchell Morrison, creator of the World Trade Center Miracle Foundation. ?I was blown away by America?s response to last year?s ride and look forward to an even bigger and better event this year.?

There are five different categories of assistance from the foundation, Adopt a Family, Children?s Relief Fund, Ground Zero Medical Fund, Terrorist Attack Relief Fund and U.S. Military Relief Fund.

The World Trade Center Miracles Foundation is the only charitable foundation where individuals, corporations and other charities can direct ?designated contributions? toward individual families, children, firemen, police officers, volunteer and military personnel who have ?fallen through the cracks?. Although millions upon millions of dollars were raised after the attack on 9/11 to cover the immediate disaster, there was very little, if any concern about the long-term effects an individual or family may encounter. Unknown to many, there are stillcountless people in dire need due to the terrorist attack and its repercussions. The tragedy behind this is the majority of these victims are still struggling to take care of their basic human needs not having the opportunity to reflect on their losses and begin to heal.

Like the early days of our country?s expansion, the ride is likened to the old barn-raising event when a neighbor needed help to get back on his feet. It is a grass roots community effort where everyone can participate on whatever level they deem fit. An opportunity to be apart of our country?s heritage, to be apart of what it means to be a neighbor and to partake in what is innately inside of all of us: the desire to give and to express our humanness in that giving.

*REMEMBERING IS NOT ENOUGH: The general public is unaware of the long-term effects of 9/11. Many have not gotten assistance because of insurance restrictions, giving rules tied to charitable by-laws, or government agency?s strict rules of qualification. The tragedy to this situation is that many still struggle with their basic human needs or from medical aliments incurred while working at Ground Zero. The World Trade Center Miracles Foundation is a source of aid for those individuals who have “fallen through the cracks” and are still in dire need.

EPA REGULATIONS COULD DESTROY THE EXHAUST PIPE INDUSTRY AND PREVENT MANY MODIFICATIONS TO BIKES IN THE FUTURE–Much of the following comes from American Motorcycle Dealer article by Richard Burton.

The EPA does, of course, recognize the tendency for owners to modify their motorcycles to enhance the performance and style of their machines and says it has accounted for this in its legislation. It cites the Clean Air Act section 203(a) as the legal authority that makes it illegal “for any person to remove or render inoperative any device or element of design installed on or in a motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine in compliance with regulations under this title…after such sale and delivery to the ultimate purchaser”. Actions that are illegal under this Act are referred to, specifically, as “tampering.”

Under the EPA’s proposals, new 2006 model” year motorcycles are required to meet Tier 1 standards (1.4 g/kmHC+NOx and 12.0 g/km ‘ CO) and new 2010 model year bikes Tier 2 (0 8 g/km HC+NOx and 12.0 g/km CO). To meet Tier 1 standards, the EPA has determined that there are four basic types of existing, non-catalyst-based emission control systems available. To meet Tier 2 standards, however, the EPA acknowledges that manufacturers may have to employ technologies not currently commonly used on many motorcycles. These include computer-controlled secondary pulse-air injection and three-way catalytic converters, as well as adaptive transient fuel control software and heated oxygen sensors in exhaust manifolds.

During a public hearing last year the AMA also warned of the potential dangers associated with some emissions control equipment, such as heat generation associated with catalytic converters. On motorcyclists modifying their bikes, he said that the AMA believes the existing tampering provisions are sufficient and urges the EPA to refrain from revising them.

The MRF also emphasized the importance of motorcycle performance, smooth power delivery and the use of technology that doesn’t generate excessive heat while stationary as being paramount to motorcycle safety. As well as reiterating the effects on the aftermarket, he also stated that the result of what the MRF called “this regulatory zeal” could be an increase in fuel consumption, traffic congestion and air pollution through a radical reduction in motorcycling in America.

The next news is on Sunday in the Cantina. If you didn’t get your fill today, join the goddamn Cantina. Jesse charges $20 a month, we shoot for $24 a year. What’s up with that?

Here’s a sneek shot of a roadtest feature, of a new Road King Custom, for 2004. We put about 200 miles on this low/black puppy yesterday. This scoot will be featured in Cruising Rider in December.
