Post 4th Thursday News

Hey,

This news will fry your fingertips. As the sun kicked into 6th gear over Southern California, action at the headquarters heated to the extreme. We are now actively working on Bandit’s Barista, a coffee shop in the front of the building, due to open about the time the city finishes widening Harry Bridges Blvd.

The major player in this effort is Ray Wheeler, the mastermind behind Weightless Rotors marketing. You never know. We may have Bikernet Composite Rotors for sale soon. Willy, the master of FXRs came over yesterday and we installed the H-D Evo engine into my Mudflap girl FXR project, then he made a list of project bike parts I needed and hit the road for Spyke’s offices.

Movie Producers stopped over and discussed their project as we scrambled around the shop as if we were all college interns working for the master mechanic, Willy.

Next week, if I can finish my Long Road Ride story for the HORSE, I will immediately scramble to bring you another Mudflap girl episode and an XS update, especially since Buckshot kicked our butts with his Yamaha project (see the home page).

Let’s hit the news. This shit will blow your mind:

NEW INDIANS FOR 2013–Attached are three images. One was penned around the time that Indian-Gilroy was closed down. The other one was sent to current Indian dealers for 2013 release. It is assumed that a bike designer by the name of Yang designed both.

STURGIS RUN AND FUEL ADDITIVE TEST–We are currently planning to make the run to the Badlands pulling a couple of Bikernet Choppers behind the company Hearse. We recently tested a fuel additive and it boosted our mpg by 30 percent, from 20 to 30 mph. It was amazing. We are going to test the same mystery product again against Oxytane: More Throttle in the Bottle.

A friend of Bikernet’s, Mike Colburn developed this additive, and we have always tried to find the perfect opportunity for a test. The run to the Badlands from So Cal, 1500 miles couldn’t be a better test bed. We will report back. Here’s a recently published piece on Mike’s product:

What is Oxytane? Oxytane is electrolyte chemistry.
That is to say, it is a very conductive liquid chemical.

Unlike other chemicals added to fuel (Fuel Additives and Octane Boosters) Oxytane is an electrolyte designed for one purpose. To reduce and/or eliminate Charge separation/electrostatic charge build-up generated in flowing fuel. Oxytane is the result of over 15 years of intense and focused research and development.

The wonderful people of Oxytane sent us some samples of their product for a product review (something we don’t often do) and are we glad we did! Both Jack Sr. and Jack Jr. put a bottle’s worth into each of their Harley’s gas tank and tested it out on a 150 mile Memorial Day ride.

It was an excellent test as the ride included both highway and stop/go city driving. From the picture you can see that the Jacks ride different models of Harley, but both experienced noticeably smoother idling and acceleration the entire time. Oxytane definitely got their seal of approval.

Now they both plan on trying it out on their trucks – Jack Sr. has a newer diesel-powered Ford while Jack Jr. has an unleaded Ford that is 10+ years old. It will be interesting to see how Oxytane improves the mileage/power of these two different trucks. Stay tuned…

NY motorcyclist dies on ride protesting helmet law– ONONDAGA, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York died after he flipped over the bike’s handlebars and hit his head on the pavement.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Onondaga, in central New York near Syracuse.

State troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., was driving a 1983 Harley Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets.

Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike spun out of control, and Contos toppled over the handlebars. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

This breaks my heart, since the safety freaks will use this against us. There are a handful of cross-purpose facts regarding helmet use. Some 20 percent of injuries in motorcycle accidents are to the head. Whereas 90 percent of auto accident injuries are head related. So, wear a helmet, which could cause you to get into an accident because of a lack of peripheral vision. It could cause you to crash because you can’t hear. It could cause you severe spinal injuries. It could cause you to ride in an over-confident mental state and perform hazardous maneuvers. So, what’s it going to be, have all your faculties available to avoid an accident, or…? Let’s let the rider decide which dice he wants to roll.–Bandit

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY HISTORY LESSON–
DO you know what happened 160 years ago this fall… Back in 1850?
California became a state.
The people had no electricity.
The state had no money.
Almost everyone spoke Spanish.
There were gunfights in the streets.
So basically nothing has changed except then the women had real tits and the men didn’t hold hands.

THE MASTER GIVES UP TEN TIPS TO WINNING THE HOKA HEY– By Will Barclay: 2010 Hoka Hey Winner

Tip # 1 FLTR Wind Deflector Kit HD Part # 57000063, is designed especially for the Road Glide, but usable on any Harley bagger. By redirecting rushing wind from below the rider it changes the aerodynamics and reduces buffeting.

Tip #2 I left Key West with MREs (Meals Ready-to-Eat) within reach on my motorcycle. U.S. military MRE meals are 100% self-contained, individually packaged and can be self heating.

Tip #3 Carrying three camelbacks filled with water and electrolytes kept me hydrated.

Tip #4 I had my bike’s fuel consumption to a science so I knew if I could push on to a more distant fuel stop; saving several stops along the way.

Tip #5 Carrying an inexpensive polyester-filled sleeping bag remained much more usable when wet than a nice down bag would have been.

Tip #6 I bought detailed maps of critical areas. Many of the minor roads on the route were not indicated in Rand McNally road atlas.

Tip #7 A full-face helmet and earplugs further reduced noise stress, enhanced aerodynamics and protected me from inclement weather.

Tip #8 My tent was small and simple and I practiced setting it up many times before the challenge so that it would be easy to do in the dark when I was cold and tired.

Tip #9 I use AMSOIL http://www.amsoil.com/ their full synthetic oil allows me to run with greater power, better fuel economy, and cooler.

Tip #10 I use the new electronic dipstick available from Harley that makes it quick and easy to check oil level and even checks oil temperature while riding.

 Good Luck and Hey!

UNCLE MONKEY IS ON THE FENCE–I admit I’m on the fence about the helmet thing. My indecision comes from being a rational human. I believe that a helmet can protect under certain circumstances just as much as in others it can cause tremendous injury.

In Saskatchewan helmets are mandatory and the police even enforce against novelty helmets. I wear a helmet when I ride the highways and by ways of this great land but I do not put on a helmet to drive my bike around to the garage in the back alley (even though my police neighbors give disapproving looks.) When I was younger a helmet was required when I was jumping or racing my dirt bike but was left at home when I was churning out the dozen or so miles between the two main tracks of farm land we owned. As my perceived level of risk rises the more likely I am to wear a helmet.

Riding through Sturgis and the Black Hills without a helmet I do feel a certain relief if you will. The weight difference between my do-rag and my half beanie is noticeable. That combined with the drag crated with by the generous padding of the helmet puts a lot of torque on my spinal column. I found that I was more alert, more aware of my surroundings and even a twinge of vulnerability that had me backing off the throttle a little more then usual. I don’t believe strapping on a helmet suddenly makes me invincible.

55-year-old Philip A. Contos passed away this weekend while participating in New York’s ABATE 11th annual Helmet Protest Run. The police who attended the accident were quick to announce that had he worn a helmet he would have survived. I can’t help but wonder how long they waited for such an opportunity. I don’t know the circumstances surrounding the accident that tragically took the life of Mr. Contos. I can only know that he died doing something he loved.

Bikers Prepare to Gather to Set a World Record —Conyers, GA , July 9th, 2011– Bikers and motorsports enthusiasts are always trying to set world records but they are usually speed related. Not this weekend! Mountain Motorsports in Conyers GA is hosting a record-setting event to establish the record for the world’s largest safety presentation!

Steven Zarbatany, President of Motorcycle Training Institute, Inc. (MTII.com), one of the event’s sponsors says “As a safety-oriented organization, we’re excited to be involved in this event! As bikers, safety — as well as fun – is always on our minds, and we’re pleased to see so many people willing to participate.”

Alicia “AJ” Jones, of #1 Stunnas Motorsports Group, the organizer of the event says she got the idea by wanting to set SOME type of non-speed record but the Guinness Book of World Records was crowded with records. After speaking with the people at Guinness Book she contacted Dr. Mike Cosgrove of MTII and together they planned this event. Says AJ “All motorcycles are welcome, as are 3-wheelers, 4-wheelers, cars and trucks. This event is really open to just about any land-based vehicle with an engine. We are hoping to gather in excess of 500 bikes and other vehicles.”

Zarbatany, who runs Florida’s largest motorcycle training school and who is an industry leader hopes that by bringing safety to the forefront, drivers will be more alert and aware of motorcycles when behind the wheel. He is hoping that these types of events are duplicated in other areas.

Why is the fine for Not Paying a toll in Florida in a car a Maximun of $168.00 and for a motorcycle $1,000.00–People will do some strange things to save a buck. Or maybe as little as 25 cents.

To block their license plates, turnpike toll runners do all sorts of things that almost have to be caught on camera to be believed.

A man hung out of a car trunk, holding his hand over his tag number; a motorcyclist twisted around, reaching back to block his plate as he sped through the toll gate; another motorcycle rider hopped up, stretched his legs back and crossed his feet over his tag to block the camera.

These oddball images and more were caught on the cameras that photograph license plates and generate bills for drivers who zoom through the toll gates without either paying cash or using a SunPass.

But catching them is difficult when the plate number is blocked, authorities said.

It’s unclear why the people try to beat the toll, since fines can be a lot more than the tolls, authorities said.

“Maybe it’s economic reasons. Maybe they just don’t want to pay,” Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Mark Wysocky said. “It’s quicker than sitting in line to go through [the toll plaza].”

Troopers warn that they’re on the lookout for daredevil toll runners. Intentionally blocking a license plate carries a maximum $168 fine for car drivers. It’s even more for those creative motorcyclists, with fines up to $1,000.

That’s because there have been chronic problems with motorcyclists blocking their plates, troopers say.

Some plazas see repeat offenders trying to beat the system.

“Sometimes they do it routinely through the same plaza and we catch them,” said Nichole Kalil, spokeswoman for Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, a division of the state Department of Transportation.

If a plate is blocked, Kalil said, the photograph is analyzed for the vehicle’s make and model to try to identify the owner. Area troopers can be alerted about a vehicle that beats the same toll every day, she said.

Troopers often wait at toll plazas to look for scofflaws.

“If you’re running the tolls, you may get away with it once or twice, but eventually it will catch up with you,” FHP Sgt. Kurt Hardley said.

Tolls that are as low as 25 cents add up, Hardley said. Driving the turnpike between Lantana and Orlando, for example, costs $13.40.

Last year, 614 million vehicles drove Florida’s Turnpike, according to Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise. Of those, about 190 million drove along stretches in Broward and Palm Beach counties, state records show.

The camera system was installed with the introduction of SunPass in 1999. Since then, typically about 4 percent to 5 percent of drivers try to beat the system, records show. In South Florida, the numbers usually are a half-percent higher than the rest of the state.

Not all drivers who pass through plazas without paying are intentionally running the tolls, Kalil cautioned. A lot of people, especially tourists, accidentally get into a SunPass lane and have no choice but to keep going.

Covering up their plates isn’t the only way motorists try to hide their tag number from cameras.

Some buy a $29.99 can of PhotoBlocker online. The spray, from a Harrisburg, Pa., manufacturer, claims it makes plates so reflective that they’re illegible to the cameras.

Company representatives could not be reached for comment, despite attempts by phone.

The spray gets mixed reviews, but using it is the same as blocking out the plate with your hands, feet or other body parts, Wysocky said.

“No matter what you do, it’s still illegal, and once you get caught you’re going to have to pay the fines,” he said.

That even goes for the driver with a guy hanging out of his trunk.

“That’s pretty drastic if you’re hanging out of a trunk to cover your tag,” Wysocky said. But he added, jokingly, “You know, they don’t have to wear their seat belt if they’re in the back seat.”

NEVADA HELMET REPEAL UPDATE–We still need one more vote before moving on to the next step, which is getting the bill to go to a senate vote.

If you are a reporter will you please contact Senator Hardy? If you know of any reporters that could call him, please ask them to do the same. I would love to get blind copies if you think of it so Hardy can’t bullshit me.

Hardy, M.D., Joseph P. (Joe)

jhardy@sen.state.nv.us

775-684-1462

Hardy is a doctor and the only republican in Nevada’s senate that is voting NO to sb177.

As a doc he’ll be concerned with his Hippocratic oath to “do no harm.”

This is what I said to his secretary and she assured me I’d get a returned call before noon.

“My name is Lily Gonzalez. I write for QuickThrottle Magazine a motorcycle magazine that reaches almost 200,000 readers in the Southwest, including CA, NV, AZ, and NM. It was brought to my attention that Senator Hardy is the only Republican Senator that is voting no to SB177 – our helmet choice bill. I will be reporting this to my readers and would like to give him an opportunity to explain why he is breaking ranks with Republicans to vote NO.”

I emailed him yesterday but they are so busy he might not have even opened up his email.

Any help with this will put the heat on.

Next – is dealing with the Senate Majority Leader … I’ll let you guys know what we’re doing to tackle that big obstacle.

Here is the email I sent Dr. Hardy last night:

………………

Dear Dr. Hardy,

I know you are a physician and I am asking that you vote YES to SB177. I am told that you are the only Republican that is voting NO. Please reconsider. I don’t ride a motorcycle to “be safe.” I ride to feel free. My kids are grown, I’ve buried my parents, served my country. Now I want the choice to enjoy one of the few things I can actually afford to do. It’s not very liberating to wear a gigantic helmet in the Las Vegas heat. If I wear a comfortable helmet, one that might appear too small for some law enforcers, I get pulled over by police officers to inspect my helmet. How is this even reasonable? The law is vague. I have two current helmet tickets and I’m fighting them to the very end. As a writer for a motorcycle magazine that reaches thousands in the Southwest, that is what I am advising my readers to do.

Martin Luther King says that “An unjust law compels a minority group to obey but does not make binding on itself.”

As a physician I hope you can agree that there are far more head injuries from falls, motor vehicle accidents of cars, and other causes. Why is it that only motorcyclists are singled out to be forced to submit to a law like this one? If it is a fair law, then it should apply to all persons commuting. If you are not willing to wear a helmet while driving, then I fail to see how you could demand others to do what you yourself would be unwilling to do.

No law will prevent death. But every “nannycrat” law will depress the economy. Please do the right thing and vote YES to SB177.

STURGIS CHILI–  A duded-up city rider walks into a seedy tavern in Sturgis, SD. He sits at the bar and notices a grizzled old biker with his arms folded, staring blankly at a full bowl of chili.

After fifteen minutes of just sitting there staring at it, the newbie rider bravely asks the old biker, “If you ain’t gonna eat that, mind if I do?”

The old veteran of a thousands of rides slowly turns his head toward the young pup and says, “Nah. You go ahead.”

Eagerly, the guy wearing the shiny new leather fashions reaches over and slides the bowl into his place and starts spoonin’ it in with delight. He gets nearly down to the bottom of the bowl and notices a dead mouse in the chilli. The sight was shocking and he immediately barfed up the chili back into the bowl.

The old biker quietly says, “Yep, that’s as far as I got, too.”

“BIKERS…. This is a BOYCOTT for the LA CALENDAR MOTORCYCLE SHOW in Long Beach, CA on July 16-17, 2011–
This is a NO COLORS event… promoters have employed LBPD to PROFILE ALL ATTENDEES AT THE GATE. This is a direct violation of our first amendment rights. In addition, all bikes are subject to LOUD PIPE VIOLATIONS if they approach via city streets.”
Note ALSO: I-405 Freeway Closure at Mulholland Dr. during Bike Show’s Saturday the Weekend of July 16-17th 2011
The I-405 will be closed for bridge demolition at Mulholland Drive between Hwy 101 (Sherman Oaks) and Interstate 10 (Santa Monica). So plan an alternate route avoiding the Sepulveda Pass if you are driving to the Show from North of Los Angeles.
Leave earlier than usual and take Hwys 1, 101 or I-5 South to the I-110 South to I-405 / I-710 South to Long Beach / Queen Mary. Get through downtown Los Angeles by 9:30 am, plan to spend the day in Long Beach, breakfast on and tour the Queen Mary in the morning, hang at the Calendar Bike Show all day, or maybe visit the Long Beach Aquarium or Downtown in the late afternoon, attended the Calendar Bike Builder’s party at night and you’ll miss the traffic. See you there!

A WORD OR TWO FROM THE LA CALENDAR SHOW PRODUCER– This one person, a girl named Denise Hansen has been blogging it everywhere on Facebook this year.

This “No Colors” has been our policy for 8 years since the biker gang killings at Laughlin and at the Easyriders Show killing at the Queen Mary back in the early ’90s.

I am forwarding a request to the City and the Queen Mary to lift this policy, but in the meantime I would greatly appreciate your positing my Editorial response on Bikernet.
Thanks for your support , Jim

BIKERS, You are Helping to Kiil our Sport, and the motorcycle industry which has declied some 70% in the past 4 years, if you boycott or do not support the few remaining quality Motorcycle Events like the LA Calendar Motorcycle Show which are trying to keep the sport alive.

Now in its 20th year the LA Calendar Motorcycle Show has been the world’s premier custom streetbike event, and is now the last remaining custom bike show on the west coast. The Show and the FastDates.com Iron & Lace Calendar which I produce and photograph were there to discover and launch the careers of many top name builders from Russ Tom, Harold Pontarelli, Roland Sands, Jesse Rooke, Shinya Kimura, and Russell Mitchell to name just a few. Other top name builders showcased at the Show and in the Calendar over the years have included Arlen Ness, Dave Perewitz, Jim Nassi, Paul Yaffee and Cyril Huze and Keith R. Ball.

I have always taken a lot of pride in the quality of the Calendar Show in which I have always tried to provide our spectators the best possible event at the lowest possible ticket price with the top name builders and their latest bikes, manufacturers, entertainment, all at the most beautiful and exciting locations in the world – first at the Museum of Flying at the Santa Monica Airport, and now at the Queen Mary Park in Long Beach along side the Pacific Ocean. Included with Sow admission is entrance aboard the historic Queen Mary ocean liner, which also served as America’s troop transport ship to and from Europe during World War II.

Besides complimentary admission to the Queen Mary and The Museum of Flying, the Calendar Show originated the Calendar Bike Building Championship, World Record Dyno Shootout, the Calendar Bike Builder Seminars, and the Calendar Girl Music Festival, while showcasing Supermoto racing, Stunt Riding Shows, the Calendar Girl Model Search pageant and so many other activities for our spectators. At the peak of the motorcycle industry we featured 190 major bike and parts manufacturers, builders, vendors, and new bike demo rides.

Unfortunately, the majority of people who attend any event like ours and come away with a great experience, just expect it, and never write letters to us or the media to pay us a compliment. While there is always that one person, who needs to satisfy their own inadequacies and to garner attention, by making negative comments about a quality event and passing it off that their opinion represents the majority, which it certainly doesn’t. Or targeting our request to leave you Club Colors on your bike.

I remember a few years ago someone wrote on a blog there was nothing to see at our Show and they walked in an out in 1-hour. Amazing! Just to walk past all 190 Exhibitors without stopping would have taken 3 hours, plus the 4 hours of Builders Seminars, 5 hours of live stage music with national recording stars and dancing with the Perfect Angeles, 8 hours of Dyno Runs, 3 hours to tour the Queen Mary, an hour for lunch, you really needed 15 hours – 2 full days to experience just one day of activities.

All for a low Calendar Show admission price of $20. While for comparison in greater Los Angeles a day at a major Amusement Park, Concert or sporting event like Dodger Baseball costs $50+ plus. A Lakers Basketball game cost $150 and up. Even a 90 minute movie with paid parking is $20.

And yet some bikers think the LA Calendar Show should have free admission. If so, then how are we to pay for the facility rental, city permits, required Police and Security, Parking Control, a $30,000 adverting budget, porta-potties, staging and sound PA, the live entertainment, and my own production and staffing costs? You saw that the City of Holister had to stop their Holister Bike Week because they lost some $170,000 in production costs their last year to hold it in their town.

Those same bikers will go to Laughlin, Daytona, or Sturgis for 3-4 days and stand on a street corner and do nothing, and because such street events have no admission, they think they are being “entertained” for free. But the Casinos and Hotels are jacking up their rates, all the concerts are additional paid admission. Those bikers are spending hundreds, if not thousands of dollars to be there, not counting the lost days of paid work to travel there and back. For just $20 ($25 the last 3 years) I’d like to think the LA Calendar Show is a much better entertainment value.

“No Loud Pipes and No Colors – Why support an organization that doesn’t support bikers?”

I am a biker and have been so all my life. I was an professional AMA racer for 12 years, motorcycle magazine editor, motorcycle designer and test engineer. My company Gianatsis Design is a Motorsports marketing and advertising design agency which serves many of the top companies in the motorcycle industry. You have their products bolted on your bike. I regularly take bike trips across Europe. Last month (at age 62) I was roadracing at speeds up to 190mph on the Imola race track in Italy with my friend, 3-time World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss.

• No Loud Pipes: Why shouldn’t the City of Long Beach not ticket some inconsiderate rider with straight pipes on his Harley riding blasting down a quiet residential street at 8-10 am on a weekend morning? I hate it when I hear straight pipe Harleys from 1/4 mile away fire up in my neighborhood on a Sunday morning. Your freedom to be a jerk, does not have the right to infringe on someone else’s freedom to have peace and quite. As our website says: Just ride to the Show on the freeway and you won’t chance being ticketed”

• Club Colors: When biker club gangs wearing club colors stop killing each other at bike events, we will be happy to change this policy. We do it to protect you. Murders at the Easyriders Show at the Queen Mary back in the early ’90s, and at Laughlin about 7 years ago, forced this policy at both the Queen Mary location and at Laughlin Bike Week casinos. We’d like to be selective and let “good” Harley and Sportbike Clubs wear their colors into the Show, but then the “bad” biker clubs and the ACLU then have the grounds to sue for discrimination.

If Mac and Bobby want to boycott anyone, why don’t they boycott airports who invade our freedom and privacy with invasive searches and banning certain carry-on items, just because a couple of terrorists crashed airliners into some buildings 10 years ago? This is the price we all pay for living in a complex, over populated world.

When you come to the LA Calendar Motorcycle Show this Saturday July 16th, ride your loud bike straight to the show on the I-710 freeway, and leave you club jacket on your bike in our secure parking lot, or carry it under your arm into the Show and leave it at one of the 28 Bike Clubs which will have booths there this year.

Thank you in advance for joining us, supporting the motorcycle industry and your fellow riders, and for making this the 20th year of the LA Calendar Motorcycle Show! –

GANGSTER CHOPPER RODE THE LONG ROAD–Bandit , I thank you for my autographed copy of the Salt Flats Motorcycle book! What a great read. Once I was home from Rockingham I couldn’t put it down, so the 1st day back in Richmond, VA I relaxed and read your book.

Thanks for everything, it means more to me then you’ll ever know. I think you found out that I connect to the huge heritage that custom bikes and builders have. So many people really don’t know about who and why the industry is where it is. It’s a shame. One day, maybe I will be an old timer with tales, until then I enjoy my grease monkey status.

I agree about the show stuff. I made the statement on Facebook that we didn’t bring home the trophey but we won in every way possible. We used parts from great suppliers that I have patronized for my entire career, we rebuilt the motor an old ’64 that was such a prize piece, we rode and Marc tracked the mileage at 986, we did the 2-day show, we had a safe trip home. All of this and I get to keep the bike? Wow! That’s what I am talking about.

From the National Motorist Association– It’s A Fee, Not A Fine– We don’t get the opportunity to write much about Montana. Big Sky Country has breathtaking vistas that make driving through the state a truly memorable experience. Montana’s prohibition of the use of red-light and highway speed cameras is an added benefit.

A recent law enforcement operation conducted by the Great Falls Police Department and Montana Highway Patrol has made the driving experience even more memorable – and expensive – for some motorists.

Highway sting operations are getting more creative as the need to bolster city finances gets stronger. A couple of years ago, Pasadena, California police set up a decoy school bus on a busy multi-lane highway, banking (literally) on passing drivers being confused about whether to stop for a yellow bus parked in an outside lane, nowhere near a crosswalk or intersection.

Two police cadets repeatedly walked on and off the bus as its red lights were flashing. Pasadena PD tagged over 150 motorists with $500 tickets for passing the bus.
The citations were later dismissed because the school bus law pertained to the loading or unloading of schoolchildren, not young adults.

The scheme in Great Falls, Montana involved railroad crossings. One day in early June, police officers rode along with engineers and conductors in two engines that kept going back and forth over city RR crossings, constantly triggering blinking warning signals.
As some motorists crossed the tracks (after the train had passed, but the crossing lights were flashing) they were pulled over by police or troopers and given tickets. The trains were then repositioned to catch the next batch of drivers.

All told, over 100 tickets were issued that one day. Those who were issued citations were told that, for an additional $85 fee, they could opt for deferred prosecution. This meant that the violation would stay on their record during a three month probationary period and then be wiped off if no more violations were received.

As the prosecutors expected, many ticket recipients jumped at the deal, their enthusiasm to contest the charges weakened by the prospect of having their driving records cleared by paying what amounted to a legal bribe.

This practice; charging “fees” to make points go away, is not unique to Montana communities, it is commonplace across the land.

Some jurisdictions are happy to just take your money, others add insult to injury and require attendance at traffic school classes. The important thing to remember is that this whole enterprise is all about safety and isn’t tainted in the least by public agency greed or larceny (and the moon is really made out of cheese).

Also If you want to see the David Mann bike I built before It got crashed, here ya go. Micheal Lichter did a photo shoot for it but Easyriders wouldn’t publish it due to my affliation with the HORSE (politics suck).

SAN DIEGO REVIEW HEADED TO BIKERNET–  I’ll be getting on a 2011 Road Glide Custom and covering Comic Con, Del Mar (thoroughbreds) Opening Day, which is like the Kentucky Derby but with hotter chicks, and a House of Blues/San Diego H-D Comic Con Run. Thought maybe I could write up something for you, including restaurant and accommodation reviews. Details below…

1. Comic Con: This is the biggest, sexiest freak show in the world. Every comic book, sci-fi, and horror fan in the universe descends on San Diego for this, most of whom are hot chicks in latex from outer space. The event is so popular 2010 sold out for 2011 even before the event was over. The crew from Sons of Anarchy will be there (I can try for an interview), as well as anyone who has made, produced or written anything on the fantasy and beyond genres. There will be a Super Hero Pub Crawl, a Zombie Walk, and many anarchistic on- and off-site parties. The idea is to chronicle the adventure and shoot the bike surrounded by unearthly weirdness.

2. Iron Horse/Hay Horse: Opening Day at Del Mar Racetrack (thoroughbreds). This is like Derby Day at Churchill Downs except the SoCal women are a lot hotter. Contrast our ponies and their ponies, surrounded by elegant women in summer finery and barely anything else. Pre- and post-track day parties featuring the chic and cool.

3. The Great Pie Run: Ride the scenic rolling hills from the coast to Julian, a town known for the amazing taste and energizing properties of its apple, cherry and blueberry pies. Local folklore has it the secret recipes were brought to Julian by Mormon bakers circa 1862. Some say, those same weirdoes are still baking the pie!

4. Designated a California state historic route in 2010, Historic Highway 94 is a 50-mile, rural road running from the foothills of picturesque Rancho San Diego to the town of Campo. “Visitors who travel along this historic highway can find a number of beautiful campgrounds, parks, museums, quaint diners and other hidden treasures,” according to the San Diego CVB.

5. House of Blues/San Diego H-D Comic Con Run. Participants are expected to dress in graphic novel costume, ride somewhere, get some blues.

What do you think?

EVEN A SMALL INDIAN RESTORATION SHOP DOWNSIZED– You wouldn’t say Jeff Grigsby is hiding out, but you could call the 9,500 sq. ft. barn that houses his Indian Motor Works restoration shop a mountain hideaway. Even so, he’s about ready to downsize.

Grigsby says he’s sold the property and plans to move to a smaller location by October 2013.

Grigsby says he’s restored more than 125 Indians as well as many other motorcycles in the small shop nestled in the Pine River Valley north of Bayfield, Colo. But even a lot of locals don’t know his shop is there.

“This is such a great area, though,” he told the Durango Herald. “There are a number of entrepreneurs – people who are not moving here for the money or getting transferred. They do just amazing stuff.”

Grigsby, 57, has accumulated tools and machinery from the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s to buff, bend or smooth metal parts, as well as a huge vintage parts inventory. He also has a glass case full of Indian memorabilia, including patches and trophies.

“We’ve been told by people who travel the world and go to all the different dealerships that nobody is involved with it on this much of a comprehensive level,” Grigsby says. “We’ve got the literature, memorabilia, jigs, and dies and fixtures and toolings, and all kinds of things that enables us to build a better product.”

Couple arrested for public sex on Fla. beach in view of 50 people, including kids–(CBS/WTSP) TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. – A young couple was arrested on Monday after allegedly having sex on a beach in Treasure Island, Fla., in the presence of approximately 50 bystanders, including several children.

Erica Huerta, 21, of Tallahassee, and Steven Perry, 22, of Lutz, were each charged with one count of lewd and lascivious exhibition.

According to a police report obtained by CBS affiliate WTSP Huerta and Perry were both under the influence of alcohol as they participated in fondling and public sex for over thirty minutes.

Police say the twosome were only about 100 feet from a restaurant near the beach while taking part in the sex act. There were also at least five children playing in the sand near the couple.

The two were booked into Pinellas County Jail, with bail set at $10,000 each.

The Kop Hill Climb, near Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, started in 1910, and was one of the most popular speed hill climbs in the country for motorcycles and motorcars until 1925 when, as a result of an accident on the hill, all racing on public roads in Britain was banned.

ERIC HERRMANN ADS A SNAKE TO HIS LATEST PAINTING–No worries, Eric didn’t go off the deep end and start painting Butterflies and Bunnies! It’s just the title of his latest painting. The “Wild Life” in this work of art is the people out having a bit of fun on a beautiful desert afternoon. Blasting down a two lane, crossing a double yellow, somewhere between finger rock and big breast butte, the biker, hot rodder, and their All-American, gun totin, passengers, have some harmless fun. The driver and rider pound fists while the gals flash and remove their Red, White, and Blue tops.

As in most of Eric’s work, it’s the details that tell the story. The V/8 and other tattoos, cigarettes rolled in a sleeve, reflections from the bike passenger as they blow by the Bunny Star Ranch, The Goodguys sticker on the hot rod, and the 911 remembrance on the biker’s rings, it’s all there. A Bald Eagle, Diamondback Rattlesnake, Gila Monster, Coyote, and Roadrunner all add to the potential treachery and sense of freedom. Both the 51 Merc. (GNRS Winner) and the stunning bagger were home built by their owners.

“In my paintings I can have as much fun and freedom as I like,” states Eric. No one gets hurt, no tickets or jail time are handed out, no motors ever blow up. Enjoy the fun within the artwork. Our American freedoms are diminishing: we are overcome with laws and regulations, and will soon be forced to drive electric vehicles. I even had to paint this work in two formats, censored and un-censored, to be politically correct, states Eric. You have the option of having her top on or off! ‘Wild Life’ will surely become a cult classic in our Motorsport History.

The original ‘Wild Life’ painting took three months to complete, measures 36″ x 48″ and is available for $32,000.00.’Wild Life’ is entirely hand painted using Acrylics paints on canvas.

Limited Edition Prints are being offered in several formats, Censored and Un-Censored.
Censored Lithograph on Paper, Signed and Numbered, Edition TBD, Unframed $125.00
Un-Censored Lithograph on Paper, Signed and Numbered, Edition TBD, Unframed $125.00
Censored Giclee’ on Canvas, Edition of 100 / Gallery Wrapped 21″ x 28″ $850.00
Un-Censored Giclee’ on Canvas, Edition of 100 / Gallery Wrapped 21″ x 28″ $850.00
Censored Giclee’ on Canvas, Edition of 51 / Custom Framed 30″ x 40″ $2500.00

First Descents and The Ritz-Carlton Take to the Open Road for Fundraising Event–
Motorcycle tour through Independence Pass raises fun and funds for young adults with cancer
Denver, CO—June 29, 2011— First Descents, a Colorado-based nonprofit for young adults battling cancer, is pleased to partner with The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch for the first-ever, “Ride to Independence” – a round-trip motorcycle ride to Aspen via Independence Pass on August 20, 2011.

When long-time motorcycle enthusiast Chuck Davis, Manager of Loss Prevention, suggested combining one of Colorado’s famed scenic routes with the resort’s dedication to philanthropic outreach, The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch Community Footprints committee quickly agreed to the idea and identified Colorado-based nonprofit First Descents as an ideal partner and worthy beneficiary.

“There’s nothing I love more than a scenic summer ride on my Harley Davidson,” said Ritz-Carlton General Manager Abdullah Vural. “I jumped at the opportunity to support an organization we care deeply about by volunteering the resort’s time and resources and, of course, enjoying one of Colorado’s most-celebrated routes from my bike.”

“First Descents is honored to be a primary partner of The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch and its Community Footprints team, largely because the resort consistently hosts such fun and innovative fundraising events to benefit our organization,” said First Descents’ CEO Brad Ludden. “The upcoming motorcycle ride is the perfect example. This is an amazing way to raise money for outdoor adventure therapy and First Descents’ programming would not be possible without partners like The Ritz-Carlton.”

The ride will include a ‘poker run’ with the opportunity for riders to pick up cards along the ride with a chance to win cash from a 50/50 pot. Registration for the “Ride to Independence” is open to a maximum of 300 bikes and may be completed in advance for $75 per bike and $25 per passenger at www.ridetoindependence.eventbrite.com . Space permitting, day-of registration will also be available at Avon’s Wolf Lot.

All participants are invited to reconvene at Eagle-Vail Pavilion from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. for a post-ride celebration. The festivities–including food, drink and live entertainment supplied by the Vail Valley’s charitable vendors–will honor First Descents and the day’s generous supporters.
For more information or to make reservations at The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, please contact a travel professional, call (800) 241-3333 or visit www.ritzcarlton.com/bachelorgulch. For more information on the resort’s Community Footprints partner First Descents, please visit www.firstdescents.org.

First Descents is a non-profit organization offering young adults with cancer a free week-long outdoor adventure experience designed to enable them to climb, paddle and surf beyond their diagnosis, defy their cancer, reclaim their lives and connect with others doing the same. www.FirstDescents.org

Great system
Thanks, Wire Plus. I installed my new module in my ’04 Big Dog Chopper, with no problems. It was actually fun. With so many wires to convert, you would think that at least one of them would be a problem, but everything worked first try. I have had absolutely NO problems since replacing my stock EHC, and it cured my low beam problem as well. I highly recommend this product to anyone who has a stock system.

RIVERA PRIMO, INC. PROPRIETARY PUSHRODS–The Original Taper Lite Pushrod Way back in the late ’80s Mel Magnet (Founder of Rivera Primo Inc. formerly Rivera Engineering) was fooling around with pushrod design. Back then there wasn’t much of a choice except straight steel pushrods, and Mel was sure he could design something better.

“We needed something that was light, very strong and easy to get in and out of an Evo HD,” Mel said. Research was done and prototypes were built at the Rivera Engineering R & D facility. What we ultimately made was a tapered pushrod for strength, using Chromemoly steel for durability and lightness and a unique adjuster to collapse the pushrod for removal without taking off the Evo rocker boxes. The Taper Lite was born! The first Taper Lites fit Evos after which came the Shovel & Sporty Taper Lites. The last installment was to fit the newly born (back then) Twin Cam motors.

KRYLON JOHN MEETS THE 4TH OF JULY–I guess one could say there’s a lot at steak. Here’s the post 4th of July report from behind the Orange Curtain: It’s interesting how the different ethnic groups celebrate freedom here in So Cal.

On July 4th just one block away from my house a playful bunch of Mexican nationals got into some of sort of dispute at a family gathering and stabbed one guy to death, and left another critically wounded. I can only guess, but I imagine it all started when one guy thought is was his turn to throw a sparkler, and the other guy thought it was his.

Watch, now they’re going to ban steak knives, and sparklers in Orange County — Shit, what will they ban next, gasoline powered lawnmowers, or odor-eating tampons for plus-sized inactive women? It’s just a matter of time before Americans will have to buy special car insurance at the Mexican border just in order to get a tuck ‘N roll job done in TJ.

It’s not unusual for people’s pets to get scared on the 4th of July and run away. The photo of the cat eating Friskies Seafood Sensations next to my ’77 FLH was taken this morning. Early last June my dog Ruby scared the living shit out of our cat and it disappeared. We thought we were never going to see the cat again when it showed back up on the evening of July 4th. I guess it got scared home.

We have a unique 4th of July tradition on my street. In addition to supporting local charities by buying fireworks and lighting them, we like to burn rubber. We’ve been doing this for about 30 years, and there’s never been one injury. Maybe a blown clutch or two, but never a human casualty, not even a scratched finger. Hey, maybe they should make Orange County residents use Goodyear tires to cut their meat instead of steak knives… it would be a lot safer, and it’d help the economy in Akron, Ohio.

— Krylon John

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY WORD OF THE DAY–aporia uh-PAWR-ee-uh, noun:

1. Difficulty determining the truth of an idea due to equally valid arguments for and against it.
2. In rhetoric, the expression of a simulated or real doubt, as about where to begin or what to do or say.

Yet he has his moments when he manages to confound our feelings and induce a moral uncertainty, something like the ironic aporia with which Socrates leaves the Sophists at the end of a Platonic dialogue.
— John Simon, “Talk to the Animals: A review of the play ‘Sylvia,'” New York Magazine Jun 5, 1995

Writing from a position of love means allowing others to see and point out the aporia in one’s writing, what perhaps has been missed, overlooked or hidden (there is relief here, a lessening of the burden).
— Claudia Eppert, “A Lover’s Discourse,” Taboo, Spring-Summer 2001

Aporia derives from the Greek roots aporos, “impassable,” and -ia, “the state or condition.”

Bobby Seegar of Indian Larry Legacy son Aidan needs Bone Marrow–
BROOKLYN (WABC) — A Brooklyn community is coming together to help a child suffering from a rare disease.

6-year-old Aidan Seeger loves listening to music, riding his scooter and crunching the numbers.

“My favorite number is 5095,” Aidan Seeger said.

The first grader is in the fight for his life and his parents don’t know how to tell him.
“We’re trying to capture every moment because we don’t know if it’s the last one,” said Bob Seeger Junior, Aidan’s dad.

Aidan has ALD, a rare and rapid moving brain disorder that destroys nerve cells. Most times it leads to a coma and eventually death.

Aidan’s teacher noticed he was holding his books really close to his face when he was reading. She told the 6 year old’s parents to have it checked out. Doctors diagnosed him with the life threatening disease two weeks ago.

“I just stood in the street and cried because that’s my body’s reaction. I’m thinking my little baby blue eyed boy that’s not going to see is he going to be here today or tomorrow?” Seeger said.

“We need four samples from you. Top bottom, bottom top. You’re going to scrub for 10 seconds like you’re brushing your teeth”- this was the instruction given to Aidan’s potential life savers.

P.S. 154 held a bone-marrow drive at his school in Windsor Terrace this afternoon. They tested and registered dozens of people. They’re hoping and praying for a match for Aidan and others like him. Sadly, Aidan’s 4 year old sister Sienna is not compatible.

A University of Minnesota doctor agreed to do an experimental treatment that would include chemotherapy, radiation and hopefully a bone-marrow transplant

“I’ve seen a lot of people coming and going. It gives me goose bumps. It’s a great turnout”, said Melissa Fletcher, a potential donor.

“They’re here. They’re opening up their hearts. There are people who blow me away,” Seeger said.

Aidan’s parents took a last minute trip to Disney world and are doing just about everything Aidan can dream of. They don’t how long they have so they’re making the most of their time together.

MORE FROM THE LA CALENDAR SHOW PRODUCER– Regarding the comments on the new American made Motus bike premiering at his year’s Calendar Show, this bike is certainly more advanced and better engineered than a current production air-cooled Harley. That alone justifies giving it a serious look with an open mind.

What you probably haven’t researched is this bike was designed and built by Pratt & Miller outside Detroit, a major design and fabrication company for world championship winning race car technology. It is Pratt & Miller who builds the LeMans winning factory race team Corvettes that beat Ferrari, Porsche and BMW in the world sportscar GT class.
The engine is based off half a Chevy small block V-8, halved to a V-4, watercooled, fuel injected, powerful and lightweight. The suspension is by Ohlins, the premier motorcycle suspension company in the world.

The Motus is an American made perfomance cruiser, more technically advanced and better performing than air-cooled Harley, that you can still work on in your garage at home. Sounds pretty cool to me. The Motus management team will be riding the bikes to the LA Calendar Show from their home base in Montgomery, Alabama, and then to Sturgis, as part of their on-going 200,000 mile real world test program before the bikes go into production this fall

And if you want really advanced technology, engineering, performance and styling get the incredible new Ducati Diavel 162hp 470lb, Testastretts watercooled 4-valve sport crusier with traction control and anti-lock brakes. It is the best , most advanced V-Twin sport/custom/cruiser bike in the world.

THAT’S A NEWS THAT ROCKS THE WORLD–  We’ve got a ton of hotshot material heading your way including this bike feature from Mike and Vickie Pullin in North Carolina.

I’m working on the Long Road to the Smoke Out for the HORSE, then more XS and Mudflap girl reports, followed by a complete Victory ride study on four Victorys. My story will include reports from a Commander, an Army Colonel, the Producer, the owner of Aeromach and a Lieutenant in the Hamsters– Amazing shit.

Hang on, then we have tributes from Betsy, bike builds from Felicia, and something from Johnny Humble, if he wakes up. Have a helluva weekend.
Ride Forever,
–Bandit
