Another incredible week. We are flying at one thing after another. I’m supposed to be shooting footage of my old and ugly self for the Smoke Out. Doc Robinson is hanging at the headquarters for a week or… He’s a moto-journalist from Australia and searching out products for his next build, while writing stories to pay the bills.
Rick Krost came by last night to pick up his Tobey-manufactured boardtrack tanks. The night was filled with Thai food and heavy welding negotiations. Rogue send me the images for his Zipper’s tech, but I ran outta time yesterday to launch it.
Tuesday we jammed south to check out Jim Latin’s collection, which is amazing and through Doc we will bring you some features of his antique Cyclones and Crockers in the summer. We peeled back from Encinitas, almost on the outskirts of San Diego, back to Los Angeles just in time to have dinner with a friend, who we are working with to write a grant safety program. We will tell you all about it, if and when it comes together. It’s actually about Freedom, but you can’t mention Freedom around our government. It scares them.

IRONWORKS INNOVATIONS AWARDS ANNOUNCED–Presented at the V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati, Ohio, Feb. 3, 2013
IronWorks magazine announced today the winners of the 2012 IronWorks Innovation Awards. The awards also known as the “Stempys” in honor of the magazine’s founding editor Dennis Stemp have been presented since 2003 specifically to recognize leadership and positive momentum in the motorcycle industry.

The Ferguson Damascus blades are made from 250 layer bindles of alternating 1095 high carbon steel and nickel 200.It was welded at 2200 degrees Fahrenheit before being put under 75 tons of pressure in a hydraulic press. After the press the Damascus was normalized and annealed, then surface ground to order. Note there is no new Ferguson Damascus being produced at this time and will be no more made in the future.

Special rare black wood with no botanical name. Was obtained at gunpoint from head hunting witch doctors who would not part with it any other way. The wood is too hard to make simple scratches on. A power dremel must be used to carve tight images or designs. This devilish black wood is lighter than ironwood or ebony and makes a superiorly balanced handle to either. There is nothing else like it on the planet; Dom has looked.

BIKERNET READER QUESTION– From a reader:
Some of the Twin Cam motors have too much run out on the pinion shaft. Is there a kit that has a front chain with a hydraulic tensioner and rear gear-driven cams?
With the pinion shaft having to much run out, the front gear section would not work unless the crank was trued, which is really not needed with the chain drive system and tensioners.
The front or outer chain is easy to get to, so if the front had a removable hydraulic tensioner, every 30,000 it could be inspected and replaced by removing one bolt, pivoting the tensioner and replacing the shoe.
This would be a hybrid system. Cams are gear-to- gear, but the pinion to rear cam would be chain drive with a hydraulic tensioner. Then all that is needed is a cam plate cover that has an inspection plate like the Evos had on the primary chain.
We reached out to Bruce Tessmer at S&S for a detailed response:
We had considered something like that, but there were a couple of things that we didn’t like about it.
1. You would still have a chain and tensioner that can cause valve timing inaccuracy, release particles of tensioner shoe in your engine, and all the rest of it. So what are you really gaining?
2. Looking at this from the big picture perspective, if your lower end is out of true, you should get it fixed anyway, because a wonky crank shaft can cause all sorts of other problems in your engine.. Of course we’d recommend an S&S replacement flywheel assembly, but there are alternatives. Just keep this in mind – if you’re going to spend the money to pull your stock wheels out of your engine and get them fixed, and reassemble the engine, why not spend a few bucks more and just replace them with something better?

UNCLE MONKEY ON SHOP SUPPLIES–Suppliers are the lifeblood of custom shops. We rely on the free flowing of parts and material from our suppliers to our doors to do our work. You can imagine how frustrating it is after having parts on back order for three months to get an update from your supplier saying the next ETA is another six months away.
My customer wants to finish his bike, get it up and running but he has been patiently waiting for me to retrieve his parts. I scramble, calling my competitors. I end up referring my customer to someone else who has the parts in stock on the shelf.
For the most part my supplier is pretty good at keeping parts in stock. Where things break down is when the parts are for a vintage bikes, when they are not for a simple Evo based Softail build.
New products, new bikes, styles, and trends come along. You don’t want your shelves empty, but you don’t want to fill the shelves with risky expensive components hoping to find fate picked the long draw.
My suppliers have their own suppliers, the manufactures who build and package the actual piece. Some factories only run certain parts at certain times. Some manufacturers are shut down for months at time, trying to save on overhead to keep the doors open for the long run during this recession.
I can only hope my customer is satisfied that I was able to locate an alternative. I may have lost out on one sale, but hopefully he will remember me next time he needs a part.

ORANGE COUNTY CHOPPERS ABOUT TO SIGN NEW TV DEAL—You read about their apparel bankruptcy, but there’s more. We heard during the V-Twin expo news of a new OCC TV series. In the big picture they are doing fine.
GEORGE CHRISTIE STILL ALIVE AND KICKING—For about 40 years he was the president of the Ventura Chapter of the Hells Angels. He retired last year but then faced a 7 count indictment and was under house arrest for over a year. He recently went to court and most counts were dropped due to crappy evidence and disappearing witnesses. They basically did not have a case.
George didn’t waist time. He wrote a trilogy of fiction books, which are now in front of movie producers and major publishers.
In addition he is working with law firms, as a consultant, to help defendants deal with severe criminal cases.

Bright and early last Friday morning hauled ass to LAX, destination Cincy V-Twin Dealer show. Spent Sat and Sun walking the isles, thanking to Bikernet Sponsors while working the Lyndall Racing Brakes booth, with Kiwi Mike and his lovely bride on our immediate right.

A “TON” OF ANNIVERSARIES FOR MOTORCYCLISTS–
BROOKLANDS MUSEUM & ACE CAFE LONDON LINK UP TO CELEBRATE 75 YEARS OF HISTORY SUNDAY 23RD JUNE 2013
1938 was a special year in so many ways for motorcyclists: at Brooklands, the world’s first purpose built motor racing track and home of the now legendary “Gold Star” (awarded for achieving sustained speeds of at least 100mph, the ton!), all-time speed records were set and, on London’s North Circular Road, a now iconic cafe opened its doors for the first time. Today, 75 years later, Brooklands Museum and Ace Cafe London are coming together at the historic Surrey venue to organise a special “Ton-Up Day” of action and entertainment, a collaboration and celebration of motorcycles and the pursuit of speed.
Giving this event a unique flavour, Brooklands Museum are assembling some of the most significant pre-War and post-War racing machines and the Ace is inviting the attendance of owners of cafe racers and bikes that evoke the spirit of the “Ton-Up Boys” (and girls!) and of the Rockers of the 1950s and ‘60s. Motorcycle enthusiasts, no matter what they ride or from what era, all are welcome to come and enjoy the spectacle.
The challenging Test Hill and a section of the famous Brooklands banking will be especially opened for action, morning and afternoon. There will be free screenings of 1960s motorcycle films such as “The Leather Boys”, 2013 being the 50th anniversary of its release. Dedicated parking areas for motorcycle clubs, trade stands and displays, and special Ace Brooklands merchandise which, together with a bar and music, will all add to this very special occasion.
There will be special displays to highlight the great events of 1938. On 12th March of that year, Eric Fernihough riding a 996cc supercharged Brough-Superior attained the fastest-ever straight line speed recorded on the Brooklands track when he touched 158mph during a flying kilometre run. And on the 8th October, Ivan Wicksteed set the all-time Brooklands Outer-Circuit lap record for a 500cc motorcycle when he rode a supercharged Triumph Speed Twin at 118.02 mph.
From the moment that it opened in 1938, the Ace was open 24 hours a day – it soon became popular with motorcyclists! In the 1950s and ‘60s the Ace attracted a new young generation of riders who, with their sports machines and much cherished cafe racers which, with their love of speed, soon gave rise to them becoming known as the “Ton Up Boys” and subsequently, with the advent of rock n’ roll, as the Rockers! Since fully reopening the original premises in 2001, Ace Cafe London has firmly established itself as a pre-eminent destination for all who have a passion for the sights, sound and smells of the thrills that are to be found with speed.
The Brooklands Ton-Up Day in association with Ace Cafe London takes place on Sunday 23rd June at Brooklands Museum, Brooklands Road, Weybridge, Surrey KT13 0QN.
The event runs from 10:00am to 5:00pm (Gates open at 8:00am for exhibitors and traders).
The Brooklands Burn Up Ride-Out departs 9.30am Sunday 23rd June from the Ace.

2013 Lobby Season Begins
Washington DC is back at work and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation is no exception.
Two separate lobby trips have been made on behalf of ABATE and the MRF. ABATE of Wisconsin and Pennsylvania have both made visits to the nation’s capitol so far this year. Many others have their trips booked for the busy winter and spring lobby season.

I have to close with this. My nephew who works at Home Depot informed me he got a bonus for snitching on a fellow employee for throwing some extra mulch on some dude’s truck. I told him he needed a good ass whooping instead of a bonus. He didn’t get it ‘cuz that’s how he was trained. I advised him he better unlearn his training. Home Depot has lost my business. Makes you wonder how many other places have similar training practices.

• I can understand an organizations objection to not allowing colors at an event but it appears that ABATE of Ohio does Not have all of the information about what is going on here.
• A motorcycle group that calls themselves Iron Order MC had an issue with another club in the area and the promoters of the Easyriders Bike Show were notified that there would be violence between the two groups at the show.
• In the interest of public safety it was decided to restrict people from wearing colors at the show until a guarantee for those attending safety could be guaranteed.
• My question is what would you do?
• And my statement is if you want to Blame Someone, Blame the Ones Involved and Not The promoters of the event.I sincerely hope that all will continue to support the shows while issues like this are worked out.

Harley-Davidson will celebrate Daytona Bike Week 2013 as part of its global 110th Anniversary events with a special display of motorcycles and more at Riverfront Park on Beach Street and at Daytona International Speedway.

FAST MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY NEWS– Senate Committee Considers Changes In Washington State Motorcycle Laws. A number of bills before the state Senate could relax regulations on Washington motorcycle riders, allowing them to ride without helmets and sometimes drive through red lights.
Senate Bill 5141 would allow motorcyclists to proceed through red lights, in certain instances. Sen. Curtis King, R-Yakima, said he filed the bill because many motorcycles aren’t heavy enough to prompt weight-triggered traffic signals. Riders would be able to proceed through red lights if they wait a full signal cycle and the light doesn’t turn green.
Capt. Rob Huss, a spokesman for Washington State Patrol, said his agency opposes the bill because it could cause unnecessary accidents.
Sen. Don Benton, R-Vancouver, filed House Bill 5143 allowing motorcyclists 18-and-over to ride without helmets. Several motorcyclists spoke in favor of the bill, including Confederation of Clubs of Washington spokesman David Devereaux, who said the current law mandating helmets was a “violation of privacy.”

CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL NOT IMPRESSED–California police are less than amused about a man’s wedding proposal stunt on a freeway outside Los Angeles.
According to Yahoo News, it happened last weekend on the 10 Freeway in West Covina, Calif., which is 20 miles east of L.A.
Several hundred motorcyclists slowed to a stop and surrounded a biker who released a huge pink smoke cloud, removed his helmet and dropped to one knee to propose to his girlfriend.
His intended had been riding on the back of his bike and seemed to be surprised by the stunt, but wasn’t too shocked to say yes.
The Calif. Highway Patrol says it’s investigating the stunt and that felony charges for interfering with traffic could be filed.

What a diagnostic tool for serial diagnostics is:
A diagnostic tool comprises a PC equipped with a monitor or display where data saved in the electronic control systems of the motorcycle can be visualized.
Serial diagnostics refers to diagnostics where the PC communicates with a control unit (or units) via the serial communication channel brought out to the motorcycle’s diagnostic connector. By reading this channel, it is possible to read data from most sensors installed on the motorcycle.
Information on correct function of sensors or actuators in the form of error messages is also saved in the electronic systems. These error messages can be usually identified as permanent or temporary, which may be important in the event the fault occurs intermittently and usually outside the repair shop.
It is also possible to control some actuators and thus to check their functionality directly or by further measurement. This is the case with electronic setting of a throttle, of injection valves function, of ignition function etc. for example. The diagnostic tool for serial diagnostics is basically equipment enabling a person to communicate with the motorcycle’s electronic systems in a form that is easy to understandable for a human being.
But it is not only a reader. In many cases the diagnostic tool must be used for various configuration functions during maintenance or repairs, especially when replacing certain components.

Actually I didn’t know before our official Bikernet Certified Welder told me what he planed to do in order to straighten a curve in the tanks. Tobey was making a set of very intricate set of US Chopper thanks in my shop. After welding them, they pulled slightly. So Tobey heat the opposite side a couple of times and let them cool, to pull them back into shape.

AMERICAN MOTORCYCLIST ASSOCIATION DISAPPOINTED BY BRUCE BABBITT COMMENTS–Former U.S. Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt is wrong to urge
President Obama to use executive powers to close off public land, the American Motorcyclist Association said.
In a speech at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 5, Babbitt, who served as Interior secretary under President Bill Clinton, said the current administration should use the Antiquities Act and other powers to protect public land from development.
But Wayne Allard, a former U.S. representative and U.S. senator from Colorado who
now serves as the AMA vice president for government relations, said such actions
would bypass the people’s representatives in Congress. He called the Babbitt comments
disappointing.
“The administration shouldn’t unilaterally decide how public land should be managed,” Allard said. “Those decisions need to be made in Congress, with input from citizens and officials in the affected communities.”
The Antiquities Act of 1906 allows the president to declare national monuments. The federal law was initially passed to protect native American artifacts such as pottery from being taken from small tracts of federal land in the West. That is, Congress determined that national monument designations were to be confined to very small areas.
But presidents haven’t interpreted the law to apply to small areas. Clinton created an uproar in 1996 when he designated 1.9 million acres in southern Utah as the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. President George Bush used the Antiquities Act to circumvent Congress and set aside the future use of thousands of square miles of the Pacific Ocean without public debate. In 2006, he designated 140,000 square miles of ocean and 10 islands and coral atolls in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands as a U.S. national monument. National monuments don’t automatically ban off-highway vehicle use but a national monument designation makes it much easier to ban their use without input from the public, elected representatives and affected communities.

HOLY MOLY—Life is moving super fast. We should have the 1928 Shovelhead back together this weekend. I’m hoping to hear good news regarding our streamlined trike frame, and the Mudflap Girl FXR powdercoating could be ready tomorrow. That means next week, that puppy will fly back together, and I’ll be in the wind.
I need to call George the Wild Brush about some pinstriping. I’m working with Prince Najar on a feature about Ride Wright Wheels, plus I spent half a day working with Eric Bennett, at Bennett’s Performance on his S&S 106-inch conversion from an 88-inch Twin Cam.
We will probably visit Arch motorcycles, maybe Sugar Bear, and shoot a US Chopper for a feature.
I like this knobby bike. Doc and Gary Mraz, the Triking Viking peeled out to Big Bear Choppers today.
I need a shot of Jack and a bowl of healthy soup, and then we’ll hit it again.
