HAPPY VALENTINES DAY THURSDAY NEWS FOR FEBRUARY 14, 2013

Has anyone seen the Day of the Falcon with Antonio Banderas? I am now going to change my title to The Sultan of the Citadel of Bikernet. How’s that?

Another strange week unfolds since Doc Robinson the Australian journalist stuck around for another week after the Cincy show. He visited Power Plant, LA Speed Shop, Daytech, Branch O’keefe, Bennett’s Performance, and Roland Sands. He shot Mickey Rourke’s bike and arranged several features.

In the meantime, California felt the tail-end of the cold from the blizzard smacking most of the country, giving us several brisk days. I tried to work on re-assembling the Mudflap Girl in the evenings, and between the cold and the flu epidemic I’ve been held up. My under-the- weather pinstriper, who needed work to pay the bills, couldn’t make it to the headquarters to pick up the job and start pinstriping our parts lockers.

Let’s hit the news. But don’t forget Valentine’s Day.

ABATE Update, CALIFORNIA BANS MOTORCYCLE ONLY CHECKPOINTS–
On July 13th, California Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 1047 into law. The bill had passed the Assembly on a vote of 55 – 5, and sailed through the Senate on a 36 – 0 vote.

The new law, which goes into effect January 1st, 2013, prohibits MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS. This is great news for bikers! This victory came thanks to the many bikers who had voiced their outrage over the discriminatory practice. ABATE of California and the American Motorcycle Association (AMA) applauded both Assemblyman Kevin Jefferies, who introduced the bill and Gov. Brown for his signature.

The passage of the law comes as another ABATE-sponsored bill makes its way through the legislature. AB 1890 would allow motorcyclists to store transponders used on toll roads or bridges on their person or anywhere on or in the motorcycle. Current law requires transponders to be mounted on the motorcycle, where it can be stolen or fall off. Another bill which would allow “MOTORCYCLES OK” to be painted on HOV (high-occupancy vehicles) lanes, commonly known as commuter lanes, has been sidelined due to costs and the current state budget crisis. But according to ABATE State Director Greg Covel, there may be a way around that issue. “This is a constant battle, and requires effort from everyone,” Covel said, “We must also always keep our ears to the ground for legislation to remove our ability to lane share.”

Also, ABATE recently had a booth at the Spokes ’N’ Rods event in Fresno. Hosted by Fresno’s Local 24, the booth was also manned by Jim Lombardo, Assistant Legislative Director for ABATE of California. “Besides supporting a great cause, we signed up at least five new members and had many renewals. I really enjoyed my day!” said Lombardo.

TWO ADMIT TO MOTORCYCLE THEFT RING–

Rebecca S. Green | The Journal Gazette

FORT WAYNE – Two men have admitted their roles in a motorcycle theft ring, pleading guilty this week in Allen Superior Court.

On Friday, Alan G. Baysinger, 42, of the 3400 block of Hoagland Avenue, pleaded guilty to corrupt business influence in exchange for a two-year prison sentence and a year on probation. A second charge of removing, covering or altering identification numbers will be dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

He’s to be sentenced this month.

He was charged along with Todd A. Vonderau, 41, of the 2600 block of Hillegas Road; Richard L. Schlatter, 35, of the 1600 block of Steup Avenue; Richard Carl King, 36, of the 2000 block of Emerson Avenue; Angela Ruth Martin, 33, of the 2800 block of Hillegas Road; and Jerrad W. Impton, 39, of the 2500 block of Hillegas Road.
Schlatter pleaded guilty this week to the single charge of corrupt business influence.

The cases against the other defendants are pending in Allen Superior Court.

In late August, police began to investigate whether Vonderau was operating a motorcycle theft ring at his car lot, Kasper Auto Sales, 2750 Brooklyn Ave.
The motorcycles were stolen, and sold, after being repainted and sometimes fitted with a vehicle identification number belonging to a different motorcycle.

Documents were created through the auto lot, such as fraudulent bills of sale, to make it appear as though the motorcycles were legitimately purchased.

When police searched addresses connected to the thefts, they found a number of stolen vehicles, including motorcycles, a tow truck and cars, according to court documents.

Baysinger told police that Vonderau was the leader of the criminal enterprise and that Vonderau paid him $200 to change the vehicle identification number plates on the vehicles.
He said he was also paid a finder’s fee for identifying motorcycles later stolen by Impton, Schlatter or himself, according to court documents.

The charge of corrupt business influence accuses the group of participating in the activities of a criminal enterprise through a pattern of racketeering, in this case involving two or more acts of receiving stolen property.

CAMPAGNA MOTORS SIGNS STRATEGIC AGREEMENT WITH RENOWNED GERMAN ENGINE MANUFACTURER–Campagna Motors is pleased to announce that they have signed a long-term strategic agreement with the BMW Group. This will allow the Quebec builder of the T-REX and V13R to benefit from BMW’s research and development expertise as well as provide its customers with outstanding service inspired by the German company’s legendary standards.

The agreement also secures the Boucherville business with a steady supply of high-quality engines perfectly adapted to its needs. The contract firmly establishes Campagna Motors as the only Quebec success story in the world of exotic street legal limited-edition vehicles.

The agreement with BMW follows Campagna’s first successful collaboration with Harley Davidsontm as engine supplier for the V13R. The company can now rely on a range of engines from well-established manufacturers known for their performance, innovation and reliability. The new relationship with BMW strengthens Campagna Motors position as a manufacturer of world-class premium vehicles and confirms the leading research and development expertise of Quebec engineers in the field of unique limited edition performance oriented exotic vehicles.

“This agreement presents Campagna with many opportunities in terms of awareness, electronic systems expertise, including security systems for our vehicles, and international market development,” said Campagna Motors president André Morissette. “As a result of this contractual relationship, our customer can expect upcoming announcements that will attract even greater attention in the marketplace.”

With the new engines availability and the ever-increasing demand from American and Asian markets, Campagna Motors can foresee doubling production over the next few years, thus creating additional quality jobs in the region. “The export market is quite a challenge for any Quebec and Canadian manufacturers,” Morissette said. “Fortunately our strategy to design and create high-end, original, one-of-a-kind street legal performance vehicles is allowing us to contemplate sustained growth and global market penetration in the near future.”

ONE-OF-A-KIND VEHICLES
Launched in Quebec in 1995, the T-REXTM remains a great favorite due to its one-of-a-kind design and the high performance you would expect from an exotic street vehicle. Campagna’s newest release, the V13RTM, launched in 2011, is powered by a Harley-DavidsonTM liquid-cooled engine. Thanks to its distinctive style and remarkable handling abilities, the V13R roadster is a “must have” for any driver looking to stand out in the crowd. Since the very beginning Campagna Motors has produced vehicles that have generated great interest among numerous celebrities worldwide and enthusiasm for its products continues to grow year after year.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WORD FOR VALENTINES DAY–
lollapalooza lol-uh-puh-LOO-zuh, noun:
an extraordinary or unusual thing, person, or event; an exceptional example or instance.

In America, the German announcement prompts Mayor La Guardia to tell City Hall reporters, “Any American who can believe that lollapalooza of a Nazi lie has sunk to the lowest possible level.”

— Philip Roth, The Plot Against America

It was a lollapalooza of a tour, all right—a “luxury hotel barge cruise” which began in the Champagne country and then went, via hot air balloon, to Burgundy for more barging, through Beaujolais, to the Riviera and Cannes and Monte Carlo…

— Donna Tartt, The Secret History

Though the origins of this Americanism are uncertain, we can be sure that lollapalooza strutted onto the linguistic stage in the first decade of the 20th century.

UNCLE MONKEY VENTURES INTO THE CANADIAN COLD–With a change in the weather and the promises of the local rodent of an early spring, I ventured out into the coldness that is my garage.

My portable heater is enough to take the chill off the air when the outside temperature is near freezing. It felt good to be spinning wrenches in my own garage. Snow White’s replacement wiring harness had finally showed up in mid December when the temperature outside was close to minus 40.

I hate having to disassemble a completed bike but the harness was sketchy at best and the manufacture promises that the new harness will be trouble free. It is why I always ride my bikes before I sell them. Snow white barely reach 1000 miles when the harness had completely failed.

It is frustrating. A new bike should run like a new bike but unfortunately I don’t have a multi million-dollar R&D department to iron out the bugs before the bike hits the street. So here I sit waiting for my garage to warm above zero so I can get back out there to strap in a new harness hoping that it will be problem free.

I want to make sure any bike I sell will offer thousands of trouble free miles. Custom-built bikes always have small tweaks and gremlins that need to be excised before the bike can go to a new home.

As I carefully unbolt one part at a time I am scrutinizing every part, every twist and turn of the harness checking for pinched wires, shorts and dead ends that may have contributed to the harness’s failure. As the last part of the harness comes out the grounds and everything is good. Supply power to the harness powers it up but the brain spits out problem after problem.

The headlight circuit doesn’t work, the right side signal lights don’t work and the left side is intermediate. The taillight works opposite as it should and the rear switch signal doesn’t have any power. Power from the brain for the coils is reading all over the map when it is sending a signal. That was what was the downfall of Snow White at Sturgis last year and left me trailer her out of the Needles back to the Kathmandu Campsite and cut my riding season abruptly short.

There is a silver lining behind this work. It is spending time out in the garage doing what I love to do, spinning wrenches and working on my bike. It gives me an opportunity to get back into the bike and check everything over with a fine toothcomb to make sure everything else is working properly. Snow White will be ready when the snow is gone.

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER HEALTH ALERT FROM DR. WEIL– Best Foods for Your Heart

February is Heart Health Month – look for advice throughout the month intended to help you manage cardio-related health concerns.

Maintaining the right mix of lifestyle habits and eating a healthy diet are the best ways to achieve optimal fitness. Help minimize heart disease and promote a strong cardiovascular system by adding these anti-inflammatory foods to your diet:

1.Nuts. They contain heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, especially almonds, walnuts and cashews. Eat a moderate portion every day.

2.Whole soy protein. If you substitute whole soy protein, such as edamame or tofu, for animal protein each day, you can lower levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that when present in high levels has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease.

3.Fresh garlic. This medicinal herb has been shown to help lower cholesterol levels. Use one or two raw or lightly cooked cloves a day.

4.Green tea. It provides EGCG, a polyphenol than may help to moderate inflammation and lower cholesterol. Substitute a cup of heart-healthy green tea for your morning coffee or afternoon soda.

5.Soluble fiber. It has a powerful cholesterol-lowering effect. Beans, legumes and whole grains are good sources to add to your diet – aim for 1-2 servings per day.

DICK ALLEN WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT DICK ALLEN–  I have had an interest in the the long bikes of Dick Allen and have probably seen pretty much all the pics (those that have been published anyway) of him, his trike, forks, pet cub, etc. I’ve always wondered what ever happened to him and in last month’s issue of Cycle Source there’s a pic of Bandit in there but there’s also a reference to Dick in a feature on a bike from Love Cycles (page 64). In it the owner of the bike says he was riding the bike on Hwy. 1 and….”met an old friend and bike cult figure, Dick Allen, who was flabbergasted when he saw me and my bike.”

I just read over it and then later that night woke up with a kind of WTF senior moment. Can this be? So, is he still around? I’m in my early seventies so he would have to be pushing or past eighty. Anyway, can you shed any light on this? If he’s around could you send out an agent from Bikernet to check it out? There must be a lot of people that would love to hear what he’s got to say.

I want to compliment you on pulling Buck Lovell out of what I would call obscurity and giving him an assignment at Bikernet. He’s one of those guys like Dick.

I had forwarded the first part of your email on to Chris Kallas and he returned with this:

“Dick Allen died around 1983-84. The way he died is a bit fuzzy. After he lost a leg in a motorcycle accident he became depressed and did a lot of drugs (not that he didn’t before). If I remember Joe Hurst correctly, he said Dick was driving with welding gear in the back of his car and blacked out or something, went off the road and a welding tank struck him in the head. He regained his composure, drove on, and a short time later (a few days?) died.”

I wonder if there will be many other clueless readers such as myself out there who didn’t know this, read the Cycle Source article, and then also sat up at night thinking…”Dick Allen is still alive?”

ANALOG MOTORCYCLES STARTED OFFICIALLY IN THE SUMMER OF 2009–however the idea has been there for years. Tony Prust, founder of Analog Motorcycles, has been riding and customizing motorcycles for over 15 years.

We caught up with Prust at the 2013 J&P Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in Chicago and liked his sense of style with his El Matador, a 1972 650cc Triumph Bonneville Bobber. It’s a sano build with clear over bare metal and pinstriping and gold leaf by Brando.

The engine was completely rebuilt by Ed @ Morries Place and features a Joe Hunt Magneto. A BNR belt drive open primary was fitted. , Wrinkle black powder coat by J & J Powder Coating, Straight chrome exhaust.

To get the look, a bolt-on hard tail was attached to the the ’68 fFrame and the forks were lowered 2”.

Prust added some special touches including a headlight made out of vintage brass cigar tin, taillight made out of vintage brass bowl and a clear glass oil filter with brass plumbing. The seat is custom made. The solid brass rear fender was fabricated by 7 metal west.

After speaking with Tony, we found out that Analog is capable of small accessory installs to full custom bike builds, powder coating to fabricating and everything in between… A full service shop. They can find a specific bike to build to your desires or they can take your sled and tailor it to fit your ideal 2-wheel charger. No matter how old or new, they have the chops to restore or customize.

How did El Matador do in the Ultimate Builder? Won the Retro Mod class and took home $1,000 for his trouble. Sharp bike and a good weekend for Analog Motorcycles.

BRAND NEW BIKERNET READER COMMENT– Pegasus Fuel Injection and Ignition System Install

http://www.bikernet.com/pages/story_detail.aspx?id=1807

I have a big bore stock stroke iron head drag racer in build stage and was thinking. Will this setup help in a drag bike of only 1200 cc. The heads are flowed 120 cfm at 490 lift have .555 lift Sifton cams so I’d add 10% more over the 490 lift flow numbers.

Ross custom made pistons 12:1 forged

Carrillo rods and stock stroke T&O fly wheels.

I was going to us a system from a Buell but too many modifications will make it costly and 2 grand is not bad for a complete tune-able system.

I’ll be running Sunoco 110 oct race fuel

Here’s a response regarding the Pegasus Fuel Injection System from Mil Blair:
The kit is complete except for a G S&S manifold. Has infinite tuning capabilities. Such as 240 digital main jets at your fingertip control. Timing can be adjusted from 0 to 45*degrees every 500 RPM.

Most bikes get 1 horsepower per cubic inch to about 5,500 RPM. And a lot more if you rev up. More torch from 2,200 up. If you have a dyno look to get your air fuel ratio 13.5 everywhere. We have a had an 80-inch Evo Sportster get 128 horsepower at 8,200 RPM.

If you have more questions, I’ll be glad to talk to you. 714-398-2360 California time.

NEW REDLIGHT BILL FOR MOTORCYCLES–Bill Would Allow Motorcycles to Go Through Red Lights, On Conditions.

Nebraska lawmakers are considering a bill that would let motorcyclists and bikers run red lights if no other vehicles are around and the stoplight doesn’t turn green after two minutes.
Columbus Sen. Paul Schumacher told the Transportation and Telecommunications Committee on Tuesday that the bill is needed because traffic sensors don’t always pick up motorcyclists, leaving them waiting at the stop light for too long.

The Nebraska Sheriffs’ Association and the city of Lincoln oppose the bill. The Nebraska Sheriffs’ Association says the bill would be difficult to enforce.

Lincoln assistant city engineer Randy Hoskins says allowing cyclists to enter the intersection when the traffic light is red is a safety risk. He says he would prefer city workers fix problematic sensors.

MOTORCYCLE GANG ASKED TO LEAVE TIMONIUM FAIRGROUNDS–Group sublet Timonium space without permission, left without incident By Jessica Anderson

Baltimore County police officers from several precincts were called to the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium on Saturday after the promoter of a weekend motorcycle show said he asked a gang to leave.

The Pagans, a rival of the Hells Angels, were asked to leave by the organizers of the Timonium Motorcycle Show about 1 p.m., police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said in an email.
She said additional police support was requested because the department was concerned about a possible confrontation after the Hells Angels were displaying their colors, which motorcycle clubs were told not to do during the event.

“We wanted to make sure we were prepared for any confrontations,” she said. Armacost said crowd size was also a concern, and that county marshals controlled the entrances at the event during the busiest part of the day.

Police said there were no major incidents and made no arrests.

Isaiah Aviles, who identified himself as the president of the Pagans’ local chapter, said his group was not ever asked to leave and that the Pagans members had not caused any disruptions during the show.

“We didn’t instigate trouble with anyone,” he said, adding that the group decided to leave around noon Saturday because of the “lack of beer and the bikini show was over.”

Aviles said his group had purchased applications to display two bikes at two different locations at the show and enjoy the event.

“We just decided to have a good time like everyone else. Our motto is to drink, party and have fun. And ride our motorcycles,” Aviles said.
The show’s promoter said the group was asked to leave because they improperly had sublet a spot at the event without permission, but added that some clubs are considered to be problematic.

“There are some clubs, just as a matter of security, we don’t want them at our shows. We don’t want their competition there,” said Rich Kohles, show promoter with American Recreational Promotions, which organized the show. “Basically, when you have a motorcycle show, there are a group called one percenters, the ones that represent motorcycle gangs.”

Kohles said the group left without incident. He called the three-day show an “extremely family-oriented event.”

LEGENDARY TUCKER 48 JOINS RM’S AMELIA ISLAND CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE SALE–BLENHEIM, Ontario (February 14, 2013) – As anticipation builds for RM’s annual Amelia Island sale, the official auction house of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance is delighted to announce the consignment of a legendary 1948 Tucker to its March 9 event. Widely regarded as one of the most advanced, early, post-war automobiles ever built, the rare and highly sought-after Tucker joins a magnificent roster of more than 80 blue-chip automobiles hand-selected for the RM sale, including no less than eight examples with pre-sale estimates exceeding $1,000,000.

Delivered new on August 11, 1948, the Tucker 48 on offer, serial number 1003, was the third of just 51 examples built and the first to feature the valance panel between the body and front bumper. Its rarity is further elevated by its desirable color; of the six factory colors available, 1003 is one of only 12 originally painted Maroon. Well-documented from new, it boasts a superb provenance and ownership history, having passed through the hands of numerous respected collectors, including the late Bill Pettit.

In the late-1980s, it was purchased by none other than prominent filmmaker George Lucas, the visionary imagination behind Star Wars and other box office hits. Lucas took a special interest in Tuckers and was executive producer of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1988 film Tucker: The Man and His Dream. The film revived modern interest in the Tucker and has become something of a cult classic among automobile enthusiasts. Since coming into the care of its current owners, 1003 has been extensively and authentically restored by marque experts, with special attention paid to its drivability and reliability. It is estimated to fetch between $1,500,000 and $1,900,000 when it crosses RM’s Amelia Island auction podium next month.

“The Tucker Torpedo, as it was often called, was a paragon of advanced engineering and safety features with radical, futuristic styling. Arguably, the most important post-war American collectible automobile, Tuckers consistently attract strong interest whenever they come to market,” says Don Rose, Car Specialist, RM Auctions. “The example on offer at our Amelia Island sale, 1003, is truly among the best of the best—not only is it a beautiful automobile in terms of its presentation, but it is fully and robustly functional, ready to take to the road. It’s a perfect fit for our Amelia Island auction, which, along with the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, is dedicated to celebrating great and iconic automotive styling.”

JUDGE WARNS NORTH CAROLINA POLICE– Also interesting is that, about 4 years ago, I found a statute in NC law which allows me to claim law enforcement officer status as “company police” in the very limited jurisdiction, which is my property and the public road immediately adjacent to my property. This allows legal use of weaponized force and arrest powers.

All that is required for me to assume this status of “company police” is to have a company and to be sworn in. Note that there is no requirement that the swearing in be recorded on any legal document or witnessed.

Since there is nothing said of the swearing in requirement, I suppose one could swear in in private and not even tell anyone about it. To have “company” status in NC is easy – name the company, fill out a short form, have it notarized, and mail it to the county. The company does not even have to have corporation status.

THE MYTH OF THE VALENTINE’ DAY HEART SHAPE–We were all brought up thinking that the heart that you see for Valentine’s day is similar to the Human Heart Organ.

That cannot be farther from the truth.

Heart Organs are oblong and have a bunch of nasty looking arteries and ventricles coming out of them.

This photo shows clearly the true origin of the Valentine heart.

JOINT VENTURE BETWEEN ABATE OF WASHINGTON, BOLT AND USDEFENDERS OF WASHINGTON– and other Freedom Fighter groups in Washington. Any involvement that any of you might be able to take is greatly appreciated.

Currently, our attempt at Repeal/Modification of the Helmet Law in Washington State is sitting dormant in the Senate Transportation Committee. the testimony was well received and we do have enough votes in committee to pass it. This Call-to-Action is the ‘encourage’ the members to put pressure on the committee co-Chairs (King and Eide) to ‘exec’ the bill so it can be voted on by the Full Senate.

Thanks in advance for all of your help!!

I do believe phone calls and email will be the most immediately effective however, can you imagine the looks on their faces when bags of mail is delivered to their offices?

This is the first of a series of letters we will be putting out over the next 12 days. (If anyone would like to write one (short and to the point), feel free to submit it to me. If I can use it, I certainly will!!)

Respectfully,

POWERSPORT INSTITUTE TAKES THE “SILVER” IN COLUMBUS– This past weekend, the state of Ohio was host once again to a motorcycle industry classic, The Easyriders Grand National Invitational Finals Bike Show in Columbus.

Our crew arrived on Thursday evening to set up the PSI booth which featured the airbrushing demos / training, several PSI Staff to answer questions and discuss a career in power-sports with numerous show attendees……… and of course the ever popular Plinko Board for all to win very cool prizes compliments of PSI.

Once we arrived and unloaded the bikes, Promoter John Green invited PSI to enter the “Vegas Bobber”, a bike actually built on “stage” during the Vegas BikeFest 2012.

The bike is built on the foundation of a Thompson Choppers chassis with custom sheet metal all built and donated to the school by Thompson Choppers owner, Paul York. A very generous gesture to be sure……but, that is just the beginning.

The bike is powered by a 124″ S&S Polished Engine equipped with a very cool Wimmer Air Intake. The driveline incorporates a Baker Transmission assembly and connected to the massive 124-inch engine by a Primo Rivera 3-inch Belt Drive. It is all fired up by an (Motorcycle Electric Suppliers) MES 1.4KW starter, lubricated by Spectro Oil products and rolls down the road on some very cool Ride Wright Chrome Forged Wheels with Avon Tyres for optimal ride and handling quality.

It is great to make this beast roll down the road fast and hard, but that means it needs to have excellent stopping capacity. This is done by using DP Brakes and controlled using Russell Brake Hoses for a positive and controlled stop every time!

The seat was custom made by PSI Graduate, Josiah Berens and really tops of this bike with a real touch of class.

The entire project is pulled together using all Gardner-Westcott hardware and is painted in an “old school” candy purple using endless line designs with candy green panels and lace accents.

Sherwin Williams Auto Paint division donated all the material to create this awesome paint job that compliments this bike with an elegant finish that really brings the entire project together.

Everyone at PowerSport Institute would like to sincerely thank the following sponsors of the very cool project:

Thompson Choppers
S&S Cycles
Baker Driveline
Wimmer Cycle
Ride Wright Wheels
Avon Tyres
Russell
DP Brakes
Gardner Westcott
Spectro Performance Oil
MES Starters
Sherwin Williams Auto Paint Division
Josiah Berens for a very cool seat

Last but certainly not least, Bikers Choice assisted in several miscellaneous parts needed to complete this project.

Now, that is the history of the bike. The very cool punch line to this story is the fact that the Vegas Bobber took the Silver in its class. The PSI Vegas Bobber was awarded 2nd Place in the judged Easyriders Show class of Specialty Chopper.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT VALENTINES SUGGESTIVE WORD OF THE DAY–nuque nook, noun:
the back of the neck.

She wore a figured lawn, cut a little low in the back, that exposed a round, soft nuque with a few little clinging circlets of soft, brown hair.

— Kate Chopin, “A Night in Acadie,” The Complete Works of Kate Chopin

If he had been a Frenchman he would have seized her in his arms and told her passionately that he adored her; he would have pressed his lips on her nuque.

— William Somerset Maugham, Of Human Bondage

Nuque originated in the late 1500s from the French nucha for “nape,” though its earliest origin is Arabic nukha referring to “spinal marrow.”

4 Worst Foods for Your Heart
Published: 2/14/2013

[page break]

BIKERNET MEDICAL CENTER HEALTH ALERT FROM DR. WEIL—Four worst foods for your heart.

Tip above discussed the best foods for your heart; today we cover some things found in foods that are not so heart-healthy. Minimize these inflammatory aggravators in your diet to help promote optimal cardiovascular functioning.

1.Trans-fats. Found in most margarines, snack foods, heavily processed foods and some cooking oils, these fats (often listed on food labels as “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated” oil) can reduce HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels and raise LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels. Also, avoid heated polyunsaturated fats, such as soybean oil used for deep frying. These fats are oxidized; consumption may have a variety of negative health effects.

2.Animal protein. Excessive animal protein has been shown to raise levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that in high concentrations may contribute to heart disease. Instead of animal protein, try whole soy protein – aim for two servings of whole soy, such as tofu or edamame, per day.

3.Refined carbohydrates. A diet full of cookies, cakes, crackers, fluffy breads, chips and sodas can increase triglyceride levels and lower HDL.

4.Sodium. Excessive sodium has been linked to high blood pressure and heart disease. Avoid processed and canned foods, taste foods before you salt them and do not add salt while cooking, avoid foods that are visibly salted and read labels (aim for no more than 1,500 mg sodium per day).

BIKERNET READER TECH COMMENT–S&S Twin Cam Gear Drive Set Installed

When I first started reading this article I thought its just another twin cam gear drive install, so I was thinking, okay, let’s see how they do it, and maybe we might see something new. I have to say, I have installed many cams, chain and gear drives from the first year of the twin cam in ‘99 to current and the oil pump pick up clearance is a good point.

We use the JIMS Evo tappet block alignment tools in two of the four oil pump mounting holes keeping them lightly snug then rotating the crank to get the oil pump gerotor gears to pump body lined up to the crank pin centerline, but now we are going start checking the oil pump pick up clearance also.

One thing I would set in stone: If you want to run gear drive cams in a twin cam CHECK THE CRANKSHAFT PINION FOR RUN OUT FIRST! If it’s out of spec as per S&S or Andrews, install sheet on the gear drive then get the crank repaired or buy a new one period! Some of the best cranks out there are Darkhorse, JIMS, or S&S ask about pro plugging and welding. I could go on and on about this but maybe in a new article,

MAINE HELMET FIGHT–Medical groups joined brain injury survivors and others in asking the Transportation Committee to pass the bill sponsored by a Biddeford Democrat.

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA — The latest proposal to again make helmet use mandatory for all Maine motorcyclists was framed by supporters Tuesday as a public-safety issue and by opponents as a matter of personal freedom.

Medical groups joined brain injury survivors and others in asking the Transportation Committee to pass the bill sponsored by Rep. Paulette Beaudoin, the Biddeford Democrat whose similar bill in 2009 was rejected.

The Maine Medical Association’s associate general counsel, Jessa Barnard, said helmets reduce the risk of head injuries by 69 percent and the number of deaths in a motorcycle crash by 37 percent.

“We also know that partial helmet laws like Maine’s, that apply to minors or young adults, don’t work as well as universal helmet laws,” Barnard told the committee. She said young people are less likely to comply with laws that are harder to enforce, in this case because it’s hard for police to tell from a distance who is in violation.

Maine passed a law requiring the use of helmets in 1967, but it was repealed in 1977. In the meantime, numerous attempted to reinstate the universal law have been shot down as motorcyclists maintain a unified political presence.
Current Maine law requires people under 18 to wear a helmet when operating or riding as a passenger on a motorcycle. The law also requires helmet use by those operating under a learner’s permit or within one year of completing a driving test, and any passengers.

Nineteen states have universal motorcycle helmet laws, which apply to everyone, according to the federal government. In New England, they include Massachusetts and Vermont.

Ralph Poland of Auburn, whose brain injury was caused by strokes, said a helmet law can prevent others from a condition he said affects speech, hearing, memory, smell, taste and vision. “Just trying to think hurts,” Poland said.

He and others noted that the state imposes similar safety restrictions on motorists, including seat belts in automobiles.

None of those who identified themselves as motorcyclists testified in favor of the bill. Opponents, who made it clear they don’t want to stop anyone from wearing a helmet, said the proposed mandate is an issue of freedom and that helmets can be an impediment to safety.
Eric Fuller of Jay, who heads a political action committee connected to the United Bikers of Maine, said helmets have only been certified to protect motorcyclists traveling up to 14 mph and cited a case in which he said a helmeted rider lost his life because of the way his head protection impacted his neck.

Responding to a lawmaker’s question, Fuller also said he believes Maine would lose motorcycle tourist traffic if it imposed a helmet law.

“I know riders who get to the Vermont border and turn around, and do not spend a nickel” in the helmet-mandated state, said Fuller. New Hampshire has no helmet law.

Past United Bikers president Fulton Butler of Wiscasset said helmet laws “are a mandatory dress code with the ability to cause injury or death.”

“Helmets should be left to the discretion of the motorcyclist,” he said.

The bill will be reviewed next Tuesday by the committee, which will then make a recommendation to the full Legislature.

MARCH ISSUE OF THE DIGITAL ROAD IRON NOW AVAILABLE—

NEBRASKA MOTORCYCLE BILLS–Senator Dubas has tentatively scheduled the hearing for LB393, repeal of the helmet law, for Tuesday, March 5th, at 1:30pm in room
1113. Thanks to our Lobbyist, we have an inside track to when this bill will be scheduled….and it was actually moved up!

Todd Miller, State Coordinator, will be in attendance to testify on the bill. We want to
outnumber the opposition in testimony so if you can make it do.

Unfortunately, it also appears that LB181, making it illegal to carry a child under the age of 8 on a motorcycle is also scheduled for the same day. Todd will be giving testimony against this bill as well.

One last thought…..Todd would like to encourage the membership to send some words of praise to Senator Bloomfield. He has been working this bill like never before. We all owe him a great deal of thanks for his efforts to date.

THE DEAF BIKERNET ITALIAN BOOKKEEPER–A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper of 20 years, Guido, has cheated him out of $10,000,000.00. Guido is deaf, which is why he got the job in the first place. The Godfather assumed that since Guido could not hear anything, he could never testify in court.

When the Godfather goes to confront Guido about his missing $10 million, he takes along his personal lawyer because he knows sign language.
The Godfather tells the lawyer, “Ask him where the money is!”

The lawyer, using sign language, asks Guido, “Where’s the money?”

Guido signs back, “I don’t know what you are talking about.”

The lawyer tells the Godfather, “He says he doesn’t know what you are talking about.”

The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to Guido’s head and says, “Ask him again or I’ll kill him!”

The lawyer signs to Guido, “He’ll kill you if you don’t tell him.”

Guido trembles and signs back, “OK! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind
the shed at my cousin Bruno’s house.”

The Godfather asks the lawyer, “What did he say?”

The lawyer replies, “He says you don’t have the balls to pull the trigger.”

Don’t you just love lawyers?

BLACK BOXES MANDATED FOR CARS–Privacy advocates worry, but technology has caught bad drivers lying about accident causes.

WASHINGTON – Many motorists don’t know it, but it’s likely that every time they get behind the wheel, there’s a snitch along for the ride.

This week ended the public comment period on a proposed law that would put so-called black boxes in every new car sold by September 1, 2014. The thing is, most cars already have them unbeknownst to many drivers.

Automakers have been quietly tucking the devices, which automatically record the actions of drivers and the responses of their vehicles in a continuous information loop, into most new cars for years.

When a car is involved in a crash or when its airbags deploy, inputs from the vehicle’s sensors during the 5 to 10 seconds before impact are automatically preserved. That’s usually enough to record things like how fast the car was traveling and whether the driver applied the brake, was steering erratically or had a seat belt on. This data has been used recently, for example, to determine what was happening in cars before accidents when some Toyota owners were claiming their cars were accelerating out of control as they were driving.

The idea behind mandating black box data recorders is to gather information that can help investigators determine the causes of accidents and lead to safer vehicles. But privacy advocates say government regulators and automakers are spreading an intrusive technology without first putting in place policies to prevent misuse of the information collected.

Data collected by the recorders is increasingly showing up in lawsuits, criminal cases and high-profile accidents. Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray initially said that he wasn’t speeding and that he was wearing his seat belt when he crashed a government-owned car last year. But the Ford Crown Victoria’s data recorder told a different story: It showed the car was traveling more than 100 mph and Murray wasn’t belted in.

In 2007, then-New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine was seriously injured in the crash of an SUV driven by a state trooper. Corzine was a passenger. The SUV’s recorder showed the vehicle was traveling 91 mph on a parkway where the speed limit was 65 mph, and Corzine didn’t have his seat belt on.

In this way, the black boxes can nail liars trying to blame their cars for bad driving.

There’s no opt-out. It’s extremely difficult for car owners to disable the recorders. Although some vehicle models have had recorders since the early 1990s, a federal requirement that automakers disclose their existence in owner’s manuals didn’t go into effect until three months ago. Automakers that voluntarily put recorders in vehicles are also now required to gather a minimum of 15 types of data.

Besides the upcoming proposal to put recorders in all new vehicles, the traffic safety administration is also considering expanding the data requirement to include as many as 30 additional types of data such as whether the vehicle’s electronic stability control was engaged, the driver’s seat position or whether the front-seat passenger was belted in. Some manufacturers already are collecting the information. Engineers have identified more than 80 data points that might be useful.

Privacy complaints have gone unheeded so far. The traffic safety administration says it doesn’t have the authority to impose limits on how the information can be used and other privacy protections. About a dozen states have some law regarding data recorders, but the rest do not.

“Right now we’re in an environment where there are no rules, there are no limits, there are no consequences and there is no transparency,” said Lillie Coney, associate director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a privacy advocacy group. “Most people who are operating a motor vehicle have no idea this technology is integrated into their vehicle.”

Part of the concern is that the increasing computerization of cars and the growing communications to and from vehicles like GPS navigation and General Motors’ OnStar system could lead to unintended uses of recorder data.

“Basically your car is a computer now, so it can record all kinds of information,” said Gloria Bergquist, vice president of the Alliance of Automotive Manufacturers. “It’s a lot of the same issues you have about your computer or your smartphone and whether Google or someone else has access to the data.”

The alliance opposes the government requiring recorders in all vehicles.

Data recorders “help our engineers understand how cars perform in the real world, and we already have put them on over 90 percent of (new) vehicles without any mandate being necessary,” Bergquist said.

The National Transportation Safety Board has been pushing for recorders in all passenger vehicles since the board’s investigation of a 2003 accident in which an elderly driver plowed through an open-air market in Santa Monica, Calif. Ten people were killed and 63 were injured. The driver refused to be interviewed and his 1992 Buick LeSabre didn’t have a recorder. After ruling out other possibilities, investigators ultimately guessed that he had either mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal or had stepped on the gas and the brake pedals at the same time.

Some automakers began installing the recorders at a time when there were complaints that air bags might be causing deaths and injuries, partly to protect themselves against liability and partly to improve air bag technology. Most recorders are black boxes about the size of a deck of cards with circuit boards inside. After an accident, information is downloaded to a laptop computer using a tool unique to the vehicle’s manufacturer. As electronics in cars have increased, the kinds of data that can be recorded have grown as well. Some more recent recorders are part of the vehicle’s computers rather than a separate device.

KENTUCKY LEGISLATIVE AGENDA—I was going to post their entire 2013 legislative agenda from the Jay Huber, the boss of the Kentucky Motorcycle Association, but it was 3,500 words long, and would have blown out the news.

However, everyone needs to scroll or skim through it. It gives you an eye-opening look into the myriad of legislative notions and concerns. I will post it as a separate article on Bikernet tomorrow. After you finish leafing through it, you’ll be convinced to join the MRF, the Kentucky Motorcycle Association, or your own local motorcycle rights group.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY—I have women scattered all over the world, yet none at my side right now. I don’t know what to think about that. My 20-some year old grandson reached out to me, since he recently broke up with the lovely Rachel.

“Gramps, when are they going to have a holiday for single guys?” Frankie said.

Here’s how I replied. “Everyday is a holiday for single guys, and a day full of wild opportunities.”

I don’t profess to be a master mechanic, or a professional bike builder. In fact, I try to learn from builders all the time. But when I’m crankin’ in the shop, I like to be left alone. Sure, if I get in a jam I’ll call someone. But I don’t do things by the rules in any book. So I’m putting my Shovelhead rocker boxes back together and Doc was in the shop, so I decided to follow torque specs.

I would have generally, just snugged them down evenly with new gaskets (Cometic), and I would have been good to go. But Doc said, “They must be torqued to specs.” The book called for 22-foot pounds, although Don Hotop recommended 18, and of course I twisted one of the studs off. So we hauled the heads back to Bennett’s and they had the studs laser removed, and replaced them with new studs. Good god.

We will attempt to put the Shovel back together again, this weekend. We will bring you all the gory details on Sunday. Lots of heavy business headed your way next week, including a book review from Doc; info from CARB about the Vance and Hines $500,000 fine, which is bullshit. It’s another example of government gone wild. Any excuse to restrict anything. According to Doc and Australian scientists, global warming is bullshit. One volcano eruption will destroy the Ozone layer far more than ten oil using civilizations. Oh no, not in America. We are in a damn hurry to restrict, control, mandate, and fine everything, instead of a balanced approach with Freedom as the code of the West.

I’ll bring you more features, more chapters, and more on the Kentucky legislative agenda. It will twist your mind. In the meantime find a warm Redhead and a bottle of whiskey. Her smile will make everything is life worthwhile.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
