ASS-KICKIN THURSDAY NEWS FOR FEBRUARY 28, 2013

Hey,

This News column is already kicking my ass, and I’m just rolling off the dime and starting to edit. If this is any indication of this year, we are heading for some good times.

The buzz is all about Daytona, the new models from Harley-Davidson, the new Indian engine, the new FXR from Big Bear Choppers, and that’s just the tip of the two-wheeled iceberg.

I can’t hardly keep up with the content flying at Bikernet, and I need to start another book project. Just in the next couple of days, we will publish two articles on vintage motorcycles, one from the Sturgis museum, and Tail Gunner is starting the restoration of a 1964 Panhead.

We have new book reviews, techs on Reading Design’s operational footboards, new Kendon ride-up trailers, the next Mudflap Girl tech involving Centramatic wheel balancers, Digital Dawg electrics, and Crane single-fire ignition.

We will also wrap up the 106-inch S&S Twin Cam build with Bennett’s Performance, and maybe start our Bonneville 2014 effort. Never a dull moment. There’s more, another bike feature from the first Ultimate Builder Custom Competition, and a very cool Vincent from Paul Garson will slip into the History department of the Cantina. Let’s hit the news:

The News is sponsored by Iron Works Magazine

MRF TESTIMONIAL–I have been around motorcycles since I was young and have lived in many states. It wasn’t until I last moved to Arizona that I was even approached about a MRO (Motorcycle Rights Organization). I joined and then found out about MRF (Motorcycle Riders Foundation).

How cool, to find out that states and even Europe have exchanged information to fight for our rights on a federal level…. Yes, that is why I joined. Not to mention the wealth of information my future husband at the time had to share. It only makes sense to support MRF if you are involved with motorcycles.

V-TWIN EXPO DELIVERS–Dealers and Exhibitors alike share their experiences from a highly productive show in Cincinnati.

The 13th Annual V-Twin Expo held earlier this month delivered a highly productive show for exhibitors and dealers alike in a world-class trade show environment. Held at the Duke Energy Center in downtown Cincinnati, the V-Twin Expo welcomed nearly 200 exhibitors and thousands of v-twin focused dealers from across the US, Canada and abroad. Also featured at the V-Twin Expo this year; nationally recognized speaker Kent Lewis, live entertainment by Jasmine Cain, industry awards and a custom trike show.

“The show continues to transform and reflect the current state of our industry- which based on feedback, indicates we’re set up for a great upcoming season” explained Show Producer Jim Betlach.

The V-Twin Expo is proud to share the following feedback from just a few attendees:

Totally enjoyed the whole show! We visited the newest Vendors and visited with those we met last year. Cincinnati is a fantastic town to stay in and the people there treated us like Royalty! We plan on coming again next year and hope that some of the Vendors who missed this year
will come back. We want to be the first Dealers that you sign up for 2014!

–Duane & Cristene Justus, Adele Motors LLC, Hauser Lake, ID

The Drag Specialties team recently returned from the 2013 V--Twin Expo feeling optimistic about the upcoming selling season. Saturday our booth was full of dealers asking for new product information and looking for assistance in growing their business. We had many existing dealers, potential new dealers, current and future vendors with new products, stopping at the booth. Drag Specialties has in the past and will in the future support the V-Twin Expo. This show has always been the benchmark for the upcoming selling season for the V-Twin Industry.

–Jim Matchette, Drag Specialties National Sales Manager

13 years ago the V-Twin show started because “we the Industry” were sick of being part of larger shows that you had to wade through snowmobiles, dirt bikes and Scooters to see what you really needed to see. This is the only dealer show in the world that focuses on nothing but v-twin. I’ve been to INTERMOT in Germany and EICMA in Italy and none of them have as many dedicated v-twin suppliers, distributors and dealers as Cincinnati. I saw and made presentations to 60% of our customers, I saw the majority of my foreign distributors and the dealer turn out was respectable.

Seeing and touching parts and meeting friends and customers face to face is when real business is done. Yes, the show is smaller, but face it there are a lot of companies out of business. The suppliers/manufacturers at the V-Twin Expo are the core of our industry. Like any trade show, it is only as good as you make it. Our business has had double-digit growth for the last 4 years and we plan to attend the V-Twin Expo next year.

–Ted Sands Performance Machine

This was our first year at the V-Twin Expo. As a premiums company, trade shows don’t always pan out. During the first day of the show, not only did I need to bring in extra help to work our booth, I had to bring in more literature and business cards. It was swamped with quality customers, not tire kickers. But, here’s the real proof of how it worked for us–we signed dozens of new accounts since the show. We will be back in 2014, but in a bigger booth!

–David Branovan, A Branovan Company

The V-Twin Expo held at the Duke Energy Convention Center in downtown Cincinnati consistently attracts thousands of V-twin-focused dealers from the US, Canada and around the world. For more details on show hours and to register as a v-twin dealer or exhibitor, please visit us at: www.vtwin-expo.com. Follow us online on Facebook at V-Twin Expo and on Twitter @VTwinExpoCincy.

HIGH ALTITUDE CAMS FROM ZIPPER’S– Below is the response from Zipper’s for the high altitude cam question…

“Regardless of the altitude, the main thing to consider when selecting a cam is the desired power band for how you will be riding your motorcycle. In a mountainous region, early torque is the key to pulling the big hills without constantly shifting.

The Red Shift 525 is a great cam for creating early torque because of the low lift, short duration intake lobe, coupled with the free-flowing higher lift, broader duration exhaust lobe. By limiting the lift on the intake valve, we’re simply raising the air speed at the valve seat, and increasing the amount of turbulence in the combustion chamber at low RPMs (1750-2500 RPM). Turbulence coming off of the valve seat is a great thing in the combustion chamber in the lower RPMs, as it gives the mixture a final swirl before being ignited by the spark plug, and increases the overall efficiency of the charge.

Increasing combustion efficiency is a good thing at any altitude, but it’s especially important when the oxygen content is low in the air. As the RPM rises, the air demand also rises, which makes high end horsepower difficult to achieve in high altitude scenarios.

This all simply means that if you have the opportunity to set your peak torque at a low RPM, and that’s where you really need the power, then big early torque is going to yield the best riding experience for you. It’s easier to satisfy the engine’s air demands at high altitude in the lower RPM regions, and that’s exactly where the Red Shift 525 was optimized.”

KATMANDU’S BIRTHDAY PARTY–Catherine Palmer known to many as “Katmandu” because of her years as a biker and photojournalist will just have turned “”55” as you read this. Just to be on the safe side she had her birthday party last Sunday and quite the party it was.

It was held at SHEA’S PUB in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The parking lot and bar was filled with well-wishers. A motorcycle and a car show were held in the parking lot while in the bar games and contest continued throughout the day during band breaks. There was plenty of free food and even a birthday cake.

Still a fox at 55, I have known her since she was a teenager attending the helmet law protests in Connecticut back in the ‘70s.

BUY AMERICAN, GODDAMMIT– My new goal is to buy items made in America. Sometimes it is a challenge! I did find a great computer table and chair at Living Spaces made in Arizona. Please read labels. We need to keep people working in the US.

VERY interesting………. I don’t know if any of this is true, and unfortunately don’t have time to Snopes investigate every statement, but you will get the point.

ACE HARDWARE – Made in the USA – Very Encouraging

Costco sells Goodyear wiper blades for almost Half the price that you Will pay
On the outside and they are made in the U.S.A.

Unfortunately our politicians and top CEO’s (GE etc) have pushed for trade to China and
Mexico for years so Americans are now out of work. Did You Know that there is no
Electric coffee maker made in the US and that The only kitchen appliances made in the US is
Viking?

I DIDN’T KNOW HALLMARK CARDS WERE MADE IN CHINA ! That is also why I don’t buy cards at Hallmark anymore, They are Made in China and are More expensive!
I buy them at Dollar Tree – 50 cents each and made in USA

I have been looking at the blenders available on the Internet. Kitchen Aid is MADE IN
The US . Top of my list already…

Yesterday I was in Wal Mart looking for a wastebasket. I found some Made In China for $6.99. I didn’t want to pay that much so I Asked the lady if they had any others.
She took me to another department. And they had some at $2.50 made in USA . They are
Just as good. Same as a kitchen Rug I needed. I had to look, but I found some made in The USA – what a concept! – and they were $3.00 cheaper.

We are being brainwashed to believe that everything that comes from China and Mexico is cheaper. Not So.

I was in Lowe’s the other day and just out of curiosity, I looked at the hose attachments. They were all Made in China . The next day I was In Ace Hardware and just for the heck of it I Checked the hose Attachments there. They were made in USA.

My Grandson likes Hershey’s candy. I noticed, though, that it is now Marked “made in Mexico .” I don’t buy it anymore.

My Favorite toothpaste Colgate is made in Mexico. I switched to Crest.

Read the Labels on everything .

WEEKLY BIKERNET GUN NUT REPORT–
Participating in a gun buy back because you believe that the criminals have too many guns is like having yourself castrated because you believe that the neighbors have too many kids.

BIKERNET LEGAL DEPARTMENT–
A Californian and an Arizonian were Elk hunting in the Hualapai Mountains when an illegal alien runs across a clearing. The Arizonian takes careful aim, shoots, and kills him. “You can’t do that!” cried the Californian.

“No, no… Remember this is a Red State , it’s legal here in Arizona ” replies the Arizonian.

Later that night the Californian goes to Kingman to buy some beer from Wal-Mart. He puts the beer on the roof of his truck and while he’s making room behind the seat, an illegal alien runs by, grabs the beer, and runs away. The Californian thinks “No problem” draws his pistol, shoots, and kills him.

As he is retrieving his beer the police come and arrest him. “But I thought it was legal to shoot illegal aliens here in Arizona !” protests the Californian. “Well yeah,” says the cop, “but you can’t use bait.”

Aussie MC’s PUT UNDER THE TAX MICROSCOPE– South Australian police say members of the Rebels motorcycle club are currently being subjected to a comprehensive tax audits as part of an intensive joint agency policing operation.

The tax department audits have been launched after “irregularities” were discovered during targeted investigations being conducted by a top-level national taskforce, codenamed Attero which the SA cops say they are leading.

While details of the SA club members being targeted cannot be revealed because of confidentiality provisions, the audits are understood to be examining the assets accumulated by several members, income streams and the structure and financial operations of companies they are linked to.

Attero commander detective Superintendent John DeCandia, the head of SA’s Crime Gangs Task Force, yesterday said its operations were resulting in detailed inquiries being “undertaken by other agencies beyond traditional law enforcement”.

“The Rebels need to understand they are being looked at not just by detectives and police in uniforms, but from a number of external agencies,” he said. “We are hoping this gives us a clearer picture of their business model … Just like any other organized crime group, tackling the money and business activities will stifle their operations.”

He said there were Rebels members across the country – including SA – who had not submitted tax returns in the past five years.

“Some members think it is fine not to comply with laws and pay their tax like everyone else has to,” he said.

The Rebels are arguably Australia’s largest motorcycle club, with more than 1200 members nationally. There are two chapters of the club in the state of South Australia – in Whyalla and at Ridgehaven in Adelaide’s northern suburbs – with 46 known members.

Since Attero started last year, 510 members and associates have been arrested or reported for a variety of offences, resulting in around 700 charges. They have ranged from minor street offences to drug offences, and 50 firearms have been seized. In SA almost 50 members or associates have faced charges.

Supt DeCandia said while Attero had been successful in apprehending club members for traditional offending, its emphasis has also been on “trying to understand the business model and trying to disrupt their actions”.

He said there “was a high likelihood” the Attero model would be applied to other motorcycle clubs in the future.

CALIFORNIA LAWMAKER WITHDRAWS RESTRICTED LANE-SPLITTING BILL-
The sponsor of a California Senate bill that would have restricted the current practice of lane-splitting by motorcyclists will withdraw the bill from consideration, the American Motorcyclist Association reports.

Lane-splitting by motorcyclists in California is recognized by the California Highway Patrol and helps ease traffic flow.

An aide to state Sen. Jim Beall (D-San Jose), who sponsored S.B. 350, confirmed in an email to the AMA Tuesday afternoon that the bill would be withdrawn, pending the results of a University of California-Berkeley safety study expected later this year. The bill, introduced Feb. 20, would have allowed lane-splitting only in certain instances: on divided highways with three or more lanes of travel in the same direction, only when traffic is congested and only at “a safe” speed.

Nick Haris, AMA western states representative, noted that lane-splitting has been an accepted custom and necessary strategy to ease traffic congestion in California for years. He noted that Beall’s bill proposed a sudden and significant shift in traffic management strategies in the state with respect to motorcycles, which could have had a serious impact on traffic flow.

“We are pleased that Sen. Beall’s office is withdrawing the bill, but we remain watchful of any legislative action on lane-splitting that could penalize motorcyclists,” Haris said. “Lane-splitting has been done safely in California for decades, so there is really no need to impose new restrictions, especially given the guidelines just released by the California Highway Patrol that make no mention of a three-lane minimum.”

According to the California Highway Patrol, lane-splitting occurs when a motorcyclist rides between lanes of stopped or slower-moving traffic or moves between lanes to the front of stopped traffic. The convention is recognized as a benefit to urban traffic flow because it allows motorcycles to make maximum use of roadways when traffic is stopped or significantly slowed. The controlled flow of motorcyclists through stopped traffic also permits more space for other road users.

“Lane-splitting by motorcyclists, when done correctly, helps improve traffic flow for everyone on the road,” Haris said. “That helps everybody save time, gas and hassles, and promotes safer roads by mitigating traffic backups. It’s important that we work to preserve lane-splitting for the benefit of everyone on the road.”

STURGIS MOTORCYCLE HALL OF FAME 2013 INDUCTEES ANNOUNCED–The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the 2013 inductees into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame and the Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame is designed to recognize individuals or groups who have made a long term positive impact on the motorcycle community. The Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame recognizes the commitment and sacrifices individuals across the nation, and world, have made to protect the rights of motorcyclists. For 2013, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame will honor one Freedom Fighter and induct five into the Sturgis Hall of Fame.

“Still” Ray Fitzgerald – Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame – “Still” Ray Fitzgerald first became involved in motorcyclist rights when he lived in Nevada. He was a charter member of the Nevada Association of Concerned Motorcyclists and worked through that organization to support candidates sympathetic to motorcycle causes. Later, when he moved to Arizona, Fitzgerald helped to successfully build a number of ABATE chapters in that state. He’s served as an officer of ABATE of Arizona, and was the Motorcycle Rights Foundation’s first Sustaining Motorcycle Club Representative.

He has been awarded the MRF Presidents Silver Cup and the organization’s most prestigious award, the John “Farmer” Eggers award for efforts supporting the mission of the MRF. Ray serves as president of The Journeymen’s Motorcycle Club, and chairman of the Arizona Confederation of Clubs.

Russ Brown – Russ Brown has been involved in the motorcycle community for more than 35 years, championing motorcycle rights and serving as an attorney for motorcyclists. He created BAM, a free breakdown and legal assistance service for motorcyclists. BAM currently has close to two million members.

The program is a volunteer effort in which members are available to assist each other in the event of a breakdown or other emergency roadside need. BAM is available to members and non-members 24-hours-a-day. Brown has spearheaded other efforts in the motorcycle world, too. His most recent effort is a new “Keep Me Alive, Don’t Text and Drive” campaign to encourage safe driving habits in an effort to keep motorcycle riders safe.

Rick Fairless – Rick spent 20 years in the paint industry working for the Glidden Paint Co. At 19 years old Rick started out in the downtown Dallas warehouse pulling paint orders. Through the years Rick worked his way up the ladder to store manager & then to the #1 sales rep in the country.

But his real love was always riding & building custom motorcycles. So, he left a lucrative career and took a chance on opening his own motorcycle shop – an Easyriders franchise in Dallas. It was 1996, and Rick wanted his shop to be more than just a motorcycle shop – he wanted a destination for all motorcycle enthusiasts, regardless of what kind of motorcycle they rode or even if they rode a motorcycle at all, so he added Strokers Ice House Bar & Grill.

In 2002, Easyriders ended its franchise program so Rick changed the name of his shop to Strokers Dallas. Since then, he’s added Strokers Ink, a tattoo and piercing parlor & RF Custom Parts. On weekends, Rick’s Strokers Dallas “Empire” will welcome between 1,000 and 2,000 people. Besides being a successful business owner, Rick is a master bike builder, columnist for two national magazines, hosts his own radio show, is a motivational speaker and a family man. Rick’s custom motorcycles have been featured in many magazines around the world & numerous and television shows.

Bill Gikling (J.C. “Pappy” Hoel Outstanding Achievement Award) – Bill Gikling grew up in Rapid City and spent as much time as he could around motorcycles. He worked at the local Honda dealership, and rode in all the local races, hill climbs and other events. In 1977, he scraped together enough money to purchase North West Sports – a Yamaha and Harley-Davidson dealership. For the next 20 years, he grew the dealership before splitting the Harley-Davidson and Yamaha Divisions into two separate dealerships. Over the years, Bill worked with Pappy Hoel to start the White Plate Flat Trackers and the original museum & Hall of Fame in Sturgis. He also worked with the Harley-Davidson Motor Company to get them more involved in the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Bill sold the Harley-Davidson stores in Rapid City and Sturgis in 2000, but still works with his son Todd at Black Hills Power Sports in Rapid City. He still loves to ride and participates in rides from Japan to Australia.

Marjoe Gortner – Marjoe Gortner probably did more than any other person in more than a decade to change the perception of motorcycling and to enhance the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally when he organized the 2000 television show called “Sturgis: The Great Ride.” The show recorded a ride that began at Peter Fonda’s ranch in Montana and ended at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip.

It not only followed the ride, but also featured numerous other rally experiences including a one-of-a-kind daredevil jump by Robbie Knievel through the Chip’s stage. The show was the very first motorcycle related show to be broadcast on a non-sports oriented channel when it debuted on the Travel Channel. It was broadcast repeatedly for three years and was the most watched show on the Travel Channel for more than two years. It was also only the beginning of television shows that brought the motorcycling experience to a wider audience than ever before. Marjoe has been involved in film-making, acting, television documentaries and charitable fundraising for many years.

Lonnie Isam, Sr. – Lonnie Isam, Sr. is a well-known expert in the history of antique American motorcycles and has bought, sold, collected and restored hundreds of them. His passion for performance Harley drag racing spans over 3 decades.

He used his knowledge gained by racing to help bring the sport to what it is today. He started a motorcycle shop in Houston called Competition Motorcycles which became well known in the world of vintage motorcycles and performance drag racing. Lonnie traveled to the Black Hills and fell in love with the area, so he decided to move to Sturgis. He brought one of his manufacturing companies – Competition Distributing Inc. – specializing in design and manufacture of correct reproduction parts for pre-1936 Harley-Davidson and other early American motorcycles.

This combination has resulted in thousands of customers all over the world. Lonnie has been committed to the growth of the community of Sturgis through his work with the Sturgis Economic Development Corporation, the Future Sturgis project and a downtown redevelopment committee.

The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Breakfast is scheduled on Wednesday, August 7 at 9:00 a.m. at The Lodge at Deadwood in Deadwood, SD.

Breakfast tickets are available for a $35.00 donation, tables of eight for $300.00. Tickets can be purchased through the Museum at 605.347.2001 or on line at www.sturgismuseum.com/cart/

UNCLE MONKEY ASKS WHAT’S A BOBBER–
What’s a bobber? What’s a chopper? For most of us the questions have fairly wide definitions. What one of us would call a bobber the next would be adamantly against. Like most things it comes down to a matter of location. Pop versus soda, sweet tea or ice tea, sofa or couch.

Chopper covers such a diverse style of motorcycles it really is hard to say exactly what a chopper is. For many of us a chopper is a modified frame – 8 inches up, and 8 inches forward stretch with 40 degrees of rake and mile long forks. For me a chopper has to have a modified frame. But what about the iconic Captain America and Billy bikes from Easy Rider and some of the bikes we idolize from the sixties. The frames were stock but kicked up in the front because of long forks.

Does that mean they are not choppers because they still have a stock frame? The long forks changed the geometry of the frame, changed the rake, changed the trail sometimes to the point that the bike was barely ride-able but damn they looked cool, so I have to include them as choppers.

When it comes to bobbers I think of the first bobbers after the war when young GI hungering for adrenaline began striping off anything that was not required for the bike to run to make the bike as light as possible, fast as possible. There were no thousand page catalogs or millions of websites offering parts. Stock was all they had and that was what they worked with.

Fenders were removed or cut down to the very minimum, all excesses from the bike removed. Many run the factory gas tanks because it gave them the farthest range. Many ran sprung solo seats because they could ride longer that way. Some say a Softail can never be a bobber but really is a Heritage with the bags, windshield, fenders and all the excess removed no less a bobber then the originals. A stock bike stripped down to the very bare necessities.

So where do we draw the line in the sand. The truth is that we have preconceived idea about stereotypical styles. A ‘50s greaser with blue jeans, t-shirt and leather jacket may have the same clothes as a punk rocker but we can tell the difference. You cannot dress in khakis, polo shirt and lofters and call yourself a cowboy; you can’t wear spandex pants, Nike high tops and a mesh shirt and call yourself a greaser.

Would I call a goose necked, porker tanked, ape hanger bike a bobber? No because too much has changed. Others would. So who is right? Neither because we are all the same in the wind.

BIKERNET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 4TH GRADE CLASS–A teacher is explaining biology to her 4th grade students. “Human beings are the only animals that stutter,” she says.

A little girl raises her hand. “I had a kitty-cat who stuttered.”

The teacher, knowing how precious some of these stories could become, asked the girl to describe the incident.

“Well,” she began, “I was in the back yard with my kitty and the Rottweiler that lives next door got a running start and before we knew it, he jumped over the fence into our yard!”

“That must’ve been scary,” said the teacher.

“It sure was,” said the little girl.

“My kitty raised her back, went ‘Ffffff!, Ffffff!, Fffffff,’ but
before she could say ‘Fuck!,’ the Rottweiler ate her!”

The teacher had to leave the room.

MAVTV American Real Network and Rich Christensen in Agreement for Blockbuster New Reality Programming–

WON & DONE series Green-lighted for April 4
CORONA, Calif. (Feb. 28, 2013)-MAVTV American Real Network is proud to announce the signing of Rich Christensen, creator of the highly successful and extremely popular PINKS, PINKS: ALL OUT and PASS TIME TV franchises, to a multi-year content development agreement beginning January 1, 2013. Christensen will be creating several shows across the entire MAVTV American Real Network programming platform.

“We have high expectations of Rich,” said Bob Patison, President of MAVTV. “He needs to do three things for us immediately: Create hits, increase awareness of the MAVTV brand and bring new viewers to the network. We will give him all the support and resources he needs to achieve these goals and bring must-see, ground-breaking programming to MAVTV American Real Network.”

Christensen’s first green-lighted series keeps him in his familiar motorsports arena: WON & DONE is a drag racing format of legitimized street racing. It will be produced at the NHRA – sanctioned Irwindale Dragstrip in Irwindale Ca. and will debut on April 4, 2013. In this fresh new weekly reality series, two drivers and their vehicles compete in a single drag race where everything about the race is negotiable: Lane selection, distance, car-length starting advantage, the start, and anything else. Once the negotiations are finalized, the vehicles line up and the first to the finish line wins.

The winning driver earns $500 and the right to compete again. The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the loser is recorded and that vehicle is forever banned from the show. Any vehicle that stays undefeated for 10 races will win a $50,000 bonus. With the pre-race negotiations playing such a critical part, virtually any vehicle could compete against any other, no matter what their relative performance levels.

The dynamic Christensen will bring his inimitable revved-up personality as host of Won & Done, and will be joined by Morgan Lucas, National Hot Rod Association Top Fuel competitor and son of MAVTV owner Forrest Lucas.

“I am extraordinarily grateful for the opportunity that the MAVTV American Real network and the Lucas Oil family have given me,” said Christensen. “I will do everything in my power to be successful and make my new MAVTV family proud.”

MAVTV American Real brings exciting programming the entire family can enjoy, focusing on real Americans living real American stories, and emphasizing thrilling entertainment from beginning to end.

Born in 1877, ziggurat is derived from the Assyrian ziqquratu meaning “height,” or “pinnacle.”

HEALING HEROES NETWORK VETERAN RECIEVES A MOTORCYCLE–
HHN is a national nonprofit charity with headquarters in Palm Harbor Florida that provides help to our armed forces personnel. One of the things that they do to help raise money is put on events. On February 23, 2013 they did so in Lakeland Florida.

At this event Chris Doyle donated a 1993 Harley FLHS to one of the veterans. I had the privilege of being there to photograph it happening. I had done a lot of work on this motorcycle when it was owned by Chris’s dad Blayne. Blayne also donated $1,000.00 in Gas Cards to go with the bike.

Since there were two veterans nominated and only one bike the HHN asked Bob Reed if he would be willing to donate half of the gas cards to the other veteran, which he did.

Chris, Blayne and I were able to fill in the new owner of the bikes history and what had been done to it. The motorcycle went to Bob Reed, Navy Veteran, HM 2 / E-5 (I think that is Hospital Corpsman / Petty Officer Second Class?) DOB 10/06/1966, Palm Coast FL.

Bob, also known as “Devil Doc” was nominated for this honor by the Warrior Brotherhood Veterans Motorcycle Club. He was a hospital corpsman attached to the Marines, and became an LPN after he was discharged in 1989. Bob is a father of five, with three still in school. Over the years, he has coped with multiple back surgeries from his years of taking care of Marines’ emergency medical needs.

Despite his disability, he continues to serve his fellow veterans through his work with the Warrior Brotherhood. In his personal statement, Bob wrote, “Since becoming disabled and not working, I have dedicated myself to helping fellow veterans through this club with advice and help getting benefits, coordinating fundraisers and poker runs for various vets’ causes. I will proudly ride this bike to all future events I attend, and tell the great story behind it and let it be known the great things this club and the HHN organization does for our vets.

The other veteran was Jeffrey B. Reid, MSGT US Marine Corps, DOB 07/14/1968, Jacksonville FL
Jeff, also known as “Gypsy Boy” is a Gulf War veteran and is currently on Active Duty in the Marines. He was also nominated for this honor by the Warrior Brotherhood Veterans Motorcycle Club, and still finds time to work with the Club raising funds and dedicating his time and talents to his fellow service members.

In his personal statement, Jeff wrote, “I believe in the work we do very strongly. We lead, train, mentor and look out for these brave men and women while they are on active duty, and I feel we should continue that even after they have left the service. Being part of the WBVMC and helping veterans has made a real difference in my life and I am proud of the work we have accomplished to help make a difference in others.”

OFFICIAL BIKERNET BOOK REVIEW DEPARTMENT HEADED BY KEVIN THOMAS DECIDES ON ANOTHER BOOK TO REVIEW– Motorcycle Journeys Through North America by Dale Coyner

Bikernet has reviewed several motorcycle touring books from Whitehorse Press and thoroughly enjoyed each one. Motorcycle Journeys Through North America, a guide for choosing and planning unforgettable motorcycle journeys is a great investment for planning out your next motorcycle trip. The guide is laid out by geographic area from Alaska to Texas to Florida to Newfoundland and everything in between.

KENDON TRAILERS LISTENED TO THE MARKET AND DESIGNED A Dual Ride-Up SRL Motorcycle Trailer–Kendon Industries, Inc. is excited to extend their trailer offering with a new Dual Ride-Up SRL Stand-Up Motorcycle Trailer. Kendon took their industry leading dual motorcycle trailer and added elegant ride-up SRL technology to form this new and exciting folding trailer. The Dual Ride-Up SRL trailer is an easy loading solution, for everything from lightweight street bikes to heavyweight touring motorcycles, which combines ride-on convenience with a lightweight, user-friendly design.

“The market has been asking for a better solution for loading and unloading motorcycles, especially when it comes to the heavyweight touring bikes that are approaching 900 lbs., “ states Kendon’s President Frank Esposito. “With easier loading, the Dual SRL can handle two heavyweight motorcycles with its 2,000 lb. load capacity.”

Dual Ride-Up SRL Motorcycle Trailers incorporate Kendon’s proven SRL technology that was first introduced in Kendon’s Single Ride-Up SRL trailers. SRL, or “Suspension Reactive Loading,” eliminates the apex created by a traditional ramp angle and the bed of the trailer when loading and unloading. The patented independent torsion suspension on Kendon motorcycle trailers works with the loading ramp to eliminate the apex and creates a smooth parallel surface with a much lower angle for loading and unloading. SRL (“Suspension Reactive Loading”) technology compresses and lowers the bed of the trailer while loading a motorcycle and raises it back up to towing height after the bike is fully loaded onto the trailer.

The Dual Ride-Up SRL Stand-Up Motorcycle Trailer features and benefits include:

•Easy Ride-On Loading design (Always use a spotter when loading and unloading)
•Newly designed rear section offers a lower ramp angle for easier loading
•New One-piece lock down trailer loading ramp featuring fold-out footboards
•Steel mesh ramp surface improves traction and increases loading stability
•Full 2,000 lb. load capacity
•The lightweight trailer can easily be stood up for vertical storage
•Made in USA

Kendon is also offering a retrofit upgrade kit to convert the standard dual rail motorcycle trailers to the Dual Ride-Up SRL technology. There are tens of thousands of Kendon Dual Trailers in use today. Now all of these owners can easily upgrade their standard dual to the Ride-Up SRL technology.

COMING FROM THE STURGIS MUSEUM–The Minneapolis Motorcycle Company was one of many that were producing motorcycles in the Twin Cities of Minnesota at the time. Just across the river in St. Paul, Thiem, Wagner, and Cyclone were also manufacturing motorcycles.

By the later part of the decade, the inexpensive production of automobiles began to compete directly with motorcycles. Very few of the early motorcycle manufacturing companies could compete with those automobiles, and ended up closing their doors.

This 1914 Minneapolis was actually the final year of production for the Michaelson brothers’ company. It is on loan to the museum for E.J. Cole of Pearland, Texas.

Watch for the report on Bikernet in the next couple of days.–Wrench

W&W AT SPEED WEEKEND ON THE ICE IN ORSA SWEDEN– Harley Racing at Speed Weekend 2013 in Orsa/Sweden. Rider Thomas Weigl pushes his modified “BigBoar” Harley Sportster to an average of 169,491 km/h on the frozen Lake Orsa, braving crosswinds, bumps in the ice and disintegrating machinery.

Big thanks to Jens Krüper from NCCR and PanAm Lubricants.

NEW MOTORCYCLE FILM EFFORT COMING–We are working on the new Derek Cianfrance film, THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES (coming out March 29th), where actor Ryan Gosling plays a motorcycle stunt performer who ultimately applies his bike techniques towards robbing banks. He trained with one of Hollywood’s great stunt coordinators, Brian Smyj.

We thought the film would resonate well with your audience and would like to know if you’re interested in speaking with Brian on behalf of the film? I have attached press notes and stills from the film for your reference. Please let us know if this is something of interest and we’d love to set something up.

–Olivia Fischetti

Hey Bandit, read the Tech article by Rouge, good shit . I’m still running my ‘01 ultra “Old Nellie Bell.” I had to take her in the other day, because the check engine light came on. The tec said it was either the engine Temp sensor or the ECM and to bring it back when the light stayed on.

How about some tech articles on sensors? Thanks, and have fun at Daytona.
–Jimbo Ferrantelli
Tavaress, FL

Hey, I’ll bring this up at the next Bikernet Editorial Bored meeting. First, we will need to have it approved by the girls who make up the bored meeting agendas. If it suits their often sensitive parameters, it might be included on the next meeting agenda. At the next Bored, I mean Board meeting the sensor subject will be discussed and then, since no one will be capable of making a decision without receiving a bonus, or a six-pack of beer, it will be tabled and sent to the ad hoc tech editors’ committee for further review. Or, I can call Rogue, under the table, and I’ll have an answer and a plan in ten minutes.—Bandit

I HAVE A BITCH—I say we tell all of our representatives to create an immediate moratorium on new legislation. No new bills for a year! So for an entire year they review and analyze existing laws, and balance their budgets. Let’s call it the year of Freedom and financial responsibility.

I would bet that by the end of the year, we would save a ton of dough, have a government running on the right track financially, remove and repair thousands of bad laws, and foster a new respect for Freedom and its benefits.

What do you think? It’s tough to keep smiling when they are coming after us with new agencies daily. Good God. They just don’t get it, but we do.

Let’s have some fun this weekend.

Ride Forever,

–Bandit
