DAYTONA ACTION Thursday NEWS NON-STOP FOR March 13th, 2014

Hey,

I’m sorta in a fog this morning. I’m trying to work with the MRF to build membership and a stronger voice for our industry. I’m working on a project with my Spitfire Motorcycle and Ikon Suspension to enhance my girder ride. It’s birthday time for Deb at Bartels’ so we cruised around LA to Classic Cycles where Barry Weiss was shooting Storage Wars or some such Discovery Channel show, then to the Peterson Automotive Museum for a tour of the Vault.

Then we blasted out to the hills of Monrovia to see a famous Indian Racer from the teens, a rare Jefferson boardtrack racer, an Irver Johnson, a Reading Standard, and two restored Henderson in-line fours. Amazing bikes.

I’m working with Kent on our belly tank streamlined trike project and we made major progress this week with the frame, in conjunction with Chris at Speed Performance Fab Inc. in Houston.

I’m also wrapping up the second Chance Hogan book, and writing a motorcycle racing screenplay. That’s not all. I’m working with Performance Machine on a piece of classic motorcycle art for the front of the Bikernet Headquarters. You’ll see the progress on Bikernet.com.

Once in a while all the project merge in a blur of activity, like they are all coming together at once. Is that the case today? Who the fuck knows? Let’s hit the news before the fog clears.

The Thursday News is sponsored in part by the Cycle Source and Easyriders magazines.

STEALTHMAN IN DAYTONA—He’s checking all the action with his lovely assistant Vicki. We caught up with him at the Indian facility.

HOT BARS FROM PAUGHCO– Paughco’s full coverage line of custom and replacement handlebars includes some very unique and totally cool styles.

Shown here are the “Mini-Z” Drags Bar, 1 ¼” “HT”, and “Boardtrack” Springer Bars. The Mini-Z is a traditional style 1” “Z” bar, but with just 1 ½” rise, 2” pullback, 10” center section with 4” drop and 29 ½” overall width.

Mini-Z’s go for just $136.95.

“HT” bars feature 1 ¼” diameter tubing swedged down to 1”. The design integrates .675” diameter hollow mounting studs that exit below the tree and allow you to route your bike’s wiring through the mounting studs.

Available in 8” and 11” rises with 7” pullback and 31 ½” width they include extra large I.D. polymer bushings and washers. Retail for the “HT” bars is $264.95. Finally Paughco has just reintroduced the very retro “Boardtrack” springer bars. These nostalgic bars are identical, in looks, to low slung handlebars found on early factory Boardtrack race machines.

Paughco’s version is 1” diameter with mounting applications to both Paughco and early OEM in-line springers. These bars are HOT and go for just $268.95.

RIDING AN INDIAN WITH AMERICAN PICKERS– I had the good fortune of riding a new Chieftain with Mike Wolf on Saturday. My beautiful bride of 40 years had signed up online and we were chosen. There were only 10 bikes so it made for a nice tight group.

The ride was around 45 minutes and skirted the less busy routes around Daytona Beach. This was much better than the quickie demo rides and got a chance on occasion to put the bike through the gears .. nice power with two up. I think I have found my next bike.

It was fun to chat with Mike about bikes and of course his History Channel show, American Pickers. Mike was a genuine guy and very personable. I’m glad success hasn’t gone to his head and maintains the down to earth attitude.

My thanks to Indian , mike Wolf and of course my sweetheart, Patty for a great afternoon.

BIKERNET JANITOR INTRODUCES NEW 5-BALL RACING GENUINE RIDING LEATHERS TO THE WORLD– Keith Ball of Bikernet.com and 5-Ball Racing and five wives (five Mrs. Balls=5-Ball) was considering how to pay homage to his history in the industry, his past wives, and his history on the Bonneville Salt Flats and decided to develop a line of genuine apparel including quality leathers for cruiser, chopper, and bobber riders.

He named it 5-Ball Racing Leathers and has recently released his first three garments designed for fit, form and comfort by Bob Kay, of Biker Pros.

They include a Jack Shirt with a 5/8th sleeve, Jack Shirt with a full sleeve and a Special Ops Club Jacket. Special features include holster pockets, sunglass loop and a smartphone pocket.

While in the throes of designing the first streamlined Belly Tank trike for Bonneville, Ball assembled a core team including Andrew Calogero of Crank and Stroker and Bob Kay of Biker Pros. Calogero is the operations and sales arm and Kay provides design expertise with his 30 years in the chopper industry.

“This gangbusters team refined the design and created a series of light weight shirt/jackets with plenty of storage and utility,” explained Ball, Bikernet.com President. “Our 5-Ball Racing Leather’s genuine riding leathers fit like a glove and provide all the functions we need on the road.”

5-Ball Racing Leathers are available online at Bikernet.com , 5-BallRacing.com and crankandstroker.com.

HERE’S WHY WHOLE INDUSTRIES MOVE OUT OF CALIFORNIA–
California laws specifically prohibits motorcycle owners from using any aftermarket product which would require the removal of any emissions control related components and or parts unless the part is either (1) a “replacement part”, (2) a part that has been approved for use by and ARB Executive Order, or (3) a part which is to be used for “competition use only.”

1)“Replacement Parts” – replacement parts are aftermarket parts that have the same function and effect on emissions as the parts they are replacing. This means that if a vehicle was not originally equipped with a catalyst and all other emissions related controls that were connected like oxygen sensors (O2 Sensors) are reconnected, then the part is considered a Replacement Part. If the vehicle does have a catalyst and the installation of the part does NOT remove the catalyst (ie. cat back system) and all other emissions related controls are reconnected, then this is also considered a replacement part.
Slip on mufflers in applications where the catalyst is not contained in the original muffler are an example of a replacement part. Full system exhausts when installed on vehicles that did not originally contain a catalyst and whose design allows the reinstallation and original function of any other emissions control related components are also considered replacement parts.

2) Executive Order Parts are emissions-related aftermarket parts that ARB has evaluated and determined do not adversely impact emissions. An Executive Order (EO) is the document signed by an ARB official documenting ARB approval for specified motorcycles. Any aftermarket exhaust system that replaces or otherwise impacts emission control equipment, including catalytic converters, requires an EO to be sold for use in California unless the system is for competition use only.

3) Competition use only – parts that are used exclusively in competition on race only vehicles. These parts do not require approval as long as they “are not used on public highways”. Labeling a product as being for “Racing Only” or “Closed Course Competition” is not sufficient for it to be included under this classification. It must be a competition vehicle and must not be used at any time on a California public highway.

THOMPSON KICKS-OFF 2014 QUEST FOR NEW SPEED RECORDS AT TEXAS —March 21-23

5-time land speed record holder and Texas Mile 200 MPH Club member seeking new top speed record with CTEK sponsored BMW S 1000 RR

Five-time land speed record holder and one of the world’s fastest BMW racers, Valerie Thompson, will return to Beeville Texas for the Texas Mile, March 21 – 23, her first speed competition of the 2014 season. Thompson set a personal best top speed of 212 mph during the March 2013 Texas Mile event on her record-setting CTEK Battery Charger sponsored BMW S 1000 RR.

The Texas Mile is bi-annual motorsports festival created in 2003 for high-performance vehicle enthusiasts, welcoming a wide variety of racing vehicles, including motorcycles, modified street cars and race cars. Participants come from all over the United States, Canada and Mexico to test themselves on one of the fastest and most challenging 1-mile tracks in the world.

CTEK, makers of the world’s smartest battery chargers, recently renewed their sponsorship of Valerie Thompson Racing for the fourth year. To celebrate their loyal support, Thompson’s team will be providing free battery charging services for competitors and race attendees at their pit display during the three-day speed festival.

“Last year was my first time to compete in the Texas Mile and we delivered a very strong performance. I love racing here, it’s an excellent racecourse and well run event, ” said Thompson. “Without CTEK’s support and state-of-the-art technology, we would have not have enjoyed the great success our team experienced here last year. We are also excited to introduce our newest sponsors, Magic Bullet Advanced Fuel Treatment, Akrapovic high-performance exhaust systems, Speed-Way Shelters, and alpha Racing, to this unique event for speed junkies, ” added Thompson.

The Texas Mile is held at the Chase Field Industrial Complex
at 2745 Byrd Street in Beeville, Texas. For ticket prices and event schedule, visit http://www.texasmile.net.

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE CONVENIENCE OF MODERN LIFE–Ah, the convenience of modern life. Everything is automatic, everything is instantaneous. We live is a fast pace society, so fast that we don’t even realize how much life is passing us by.

For you young kids out there stop and ask some of us old timers about a time before cell phones, before this glorious internet, a time when mailing a letter would take three to seven days to arrive. A simpler time when you would sit down at the bar and talk to your friends, make wagers on who was right on some obscure trivial fact, a fact that could only be verified by asking a grey beard or driving down to the local library and checking out a book, reading that book, and bringing it along the next time to collect on your bet.

But beyond the convenience of smart phones and even smarter apps we take even the basics of life for granted. I know we live life dangling by a thin thread, especially here in Canada where the lack of a furnace or ways of generating heat can mean life or death.

Last week it was my water supply. Sustained weeks of -40-50 degree weather drove the frost line so deep into the ground it froze the main water supply lines carrying the water through our modern civilized world. The line in front of my house finally had enough and ruptured like many in our city.

It’s been a week and the promise is that the water to our block will soon be on. How long can you live without fresh water? Think about how panic stricken you were last time you left your cell phone behind.

Mrs. Monkey and I managed to get by rationing what little water reserves we have. Many neighbors simply packed up and left hoping that they would find the water on at a hotel or with family and friends. I think our “missing” neighbors from Ireland have finally snapped and moved back to the green isle. But we got by. We accept that the world is not perfect and that thin thread that we all dangle from is broken… but it can be fixed.

I have many friends who don’t have cell phones, who haven’t bought into this crazy rat race. They and I are part of a dying breed of people who fix things with our hands, who roll up their sleeves when the tough get going and get things done.

We try to keep life simple and manageable because we see how fragile our modern society is – how we can wake up one day without our heat, wake up without our water, or wake up without our freedom.

Next stop – the Twilight Zone!
By Algie

That’s it, that’s it, and that’s it, I guess that’s it.

I have had it up to my ears with S.O.A. and the way people think it is real. People it is a show, on TV, for TV, what part of this do you not get? I can see if you like the show, but to think it is ANYTHING like what bikers do is nuts! This show was created for entertainment. I have had too many people and things happen to not open my font and type my piece.

I SEE THE LIGHT!
Rivera Primos high tech LED headlamp for high speed night riding!
By Buck Lovell –

With technology advancing at the current rate, it’s surprising that an all LED headlight isn’t as common as it should be. The advantage is obvious. Brighter, better lighting for night riding makes any night ride safer and more enjoyable. With the Rivera Primo halogen/LED combo a rider can see better at night and be seen better by other riders and drivers. The easy plug and go installation mean virtually anybody can install and adjust the Rivera Primo headlight using common hand tools.

Sturgis Motorcycle Museum – 1912 Flying Merkel Racer
One of the most sought after antiques around today.
By Christine Paige-Diers, (Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame), with additional photos from the Bob T. Collection. –

The 1912 catalog from the Miami Cycle & Manufacturing Company in Middleton Ohio touts the company’s Flying Merkel motorcycle as “The Only Motorcycle with a Spring Frame and a Spring Fork.”

While the Flying Merkel is one of the most sought-after antiques around today, in 1912, it was just one of dozens of motorcycles being produced in the United States. The Miami Cycle & Manufacturing Company was actually the third company to produce the Flying Merkel.

ALERT FROM THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION–The CDC community preventative services task force has released it findings statement on motorcycle safety. It’s just as bad as we imagined it. I was supposed to speak to the CDC today but they postponed. I’ll likely speak to them tomorrow to answer some question about the report.

One of the things I am to find out is where are all the studies they say they used? They claim to use data from 69 studies yet there are only 7 resources listed in the reference section. A full MRF release is in the works.

At the core of the Comfort Max Gel Pad is an advanced Viscoelastic molded gel used in medical and sports applications, plus a top and bottom layer of memory foam that contours the rider, eliminating pressure points or “Hot Spots” which can cause rider discomfort. In addition, the memory foam/gel sandwich combination absorbs vibration, small bumps and road irregularities.

The addition of a Sheepskin cover offers the highest level of comfort available, priceless for long distance rides. It softly conforms to your shape and eliminates localized pressure. Genuine Sheepskin covers provide increased comfort and allow air to circulate, virtually eliminating perspiration in hot weather and providing warmth in cold weather. The Sheepskin wool cover is soft and resilient. Its fibers breathe, acting like a natural thermostat for your body, keeping you perfectly comfortable regardless of the weather.

Comfort Max Gel Pads are available in five sizes to fit any seating application and come with a 30-day no hassle return policy. The molded gel is guaranteed a lifetime! MSRP: $69.95 to $129.95

IN CASE YOU MISSED THE FIRST BIKERNET UNIVERSITY VOCABULARY LESSON WORD OF THE DAY SPONSORED BY THE SMOKEOUT COLLEGE APPLICATION COURSE FOR 2014– thingamajig
THING-uh-muh-jig , noun; 1. Informal. a gadget or other thing for which the speaker does not know or has forgotten the name.

“Why, a thingamajig . For dogs, you know.” Sally nodded. “Oh, a thingamajig for dogs? Now I understand.”

— P. G. Wodehouse, The Adventures of Sally , 1921

“You have to punch out the questions on that thingamajig , and the answers come out on tape from the whatchamacallits. You can’t just talk to it.” A doubt crossed his fine face.

— Kurt Vonnegut, Player Piano , 1952

The origins of thingamajig are unknown, though it first appeared in English in the 1870s. It is an extended form of the word thing that likely came from an earlier form, thingum .

THE LORD OF CAR HOARDS KICKS OFF ON ST. PATTY’S DAY ON DISCOVERY—All New Series Features Custom Car Icon Rick Dore and Wrestling Superstar Chuck Palumbo

Every year finding unrestored classic American cars is becoming a thing of the past. But there’s a secret treasure trove of automotive relics that still exists: Car Hoards — the last frontier of the American Classic Car. Now, hot rod guru, Rick Dore and WWE superstar Chuck Palumbo are out to rebuild legendary cars and help car Hoarders thin out their stockpiles of classic cars in LORDS OF THE CAR HOARDS to premiere on Discovery Channel Monday, March 17 at 10 PM/ET.

Each episode of LORDS OF THE CAR HOARDS features Dore and Palumbo helping car Hoarders by offering them a deal: pick one dream car from their overcrowded car collection to rebuild while covering the costs of the remake by parting with and selling other cars and car parts from their massive hoard. Every hoard is a surprise, a treasure hunt, and Dore and Palumbo don’t always know what they’re getting into. Junky hoards mean tight budgets and tight deadlines which is unknown in the custom car world. The pressure is on and they don’t always get along, but together they have a passion for cars that touches these Hoarders’ lives, changing them forever.

Dore, a classic car legend known for his vivid imagination, has been in the custom car building game for more than two decades. He’s been inducted into numerous automotive halls of fame and his one-of-a-kind creations regularly grace the covers and pages of hot rod magazines, including Rod & Custom, Rodder’s Journal and Custom Rodder. A recent Dore creation, The Black Pearl, won every category in its class at the 2014 Grand National Roadster Show.

Palumbo, the 6’6” athlete and wrestling superstar holds numerous world wrestling titles, including two WWE Tag team titles and four WCW World Tag Team titles. He left WWE in 2008 to pursue his passion for cars and motorcycles. As a longtime hot rod purist, Palumbo is in it to win it.

LETTER FROM THE BOSS OF WOMEN RIDERS NOW–I’m excited to share that there is a brand new women’s motorcycling boutique now open in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, called Ride Empowered. Soon the online store will be open for those of us who don’t live near there.

Just a note that I am one of the speakers at the first Steel Horse Sisterhood Summit held May 2-4 in Denver. Start making plans to join me and the other speakers, and several hundred women motorcyclists from all over the country. It’s going to be a blast!

If you can’t make Denver, well I’m also speaking at the Power of the Road Virtual Conference, an online event you can do from home in April. Details below. If you care to hear my thoughts on motorcycling and life, join me at one or both of these two events.

And check out the stories on WRN. My favorite is the Honeymooning by Motorcycle in 1934 because of all the vintage photos.

Smiles and Blessings!

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY NOW OPEN–A Jewish man was leaving a convenience store with his espresso when he noticed a most unusual Italian funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery.

A black hearse was followed by a second black hearse about 50 feet behind the first one.
Behind the second hearse was a solitary Italian man walking a dog on a leash.

Behind him, a short distance back, were about 200 men walking in single file.

The Jewish man couldn’t stand the curiosity.
He respectfully approached the Italian man walking the dog and said: “I am so sorry for your loss, and this may be a bad time to disturb you, but I’ve never seen an Italian funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?”

“My wife’s.”

”What happened to her?”

“She yelled at me and my dog attacked and killed her.”

He inquired further, “But who is in the second hearse?”

My mother-in-law. She came to help my wife and the dog turned on her and killed her also.

A very poignant and touching moment of Jewish and Italian brotherhood and silence passed between the two men.

The Jewish man then asked, “Can I borrow the dog?”

The Italian man replied, “Get in line.”

HARLEY-DAVIDSON SCREAMIN’ EAGLE DRAG TEAM SET FOR OPENER AT GAINESVILLE– Hines and Krawiec Confident and Ready to Race after R&D-Focused Off-Season

The Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines drag racing team is warmed up and ready to rumble at the 45th annual Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals, March 14-16 at Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville. The event is the season-opener for the Pro Stock Motorcycle class in the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

Fresh from two days of testing at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Valdosta, Ga., riders Ed Krawiec and Andrew Hines arrive at the Gatornationals with a pair of fine-tuned, earth-shaking Harley-Davidson V-Rod motorcycles, ready to pick up the momentum that saw the team win three of the six Countdown to the Championship races at the end of the 2013 season.

“The team finished strong last year after struggling to find performance early in the season with our new engine,” said Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Kris Schoonover. “This off-season we focused on implementing the lessons learned last year and building incremental performance, instead of thrashing just to make it to the Gainesville starting line, which was the case in 2013. The team will be back in the traditional Harley-Davidson orange and black paint and leathers, and we hope to put those colors in the winner’s circle more often this year.”

Hines and Krawiec, each a three-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, are ready to get the season started.

“We put in a lot of hours on R&D and the dyno during the off-season, and I think our testing this week really validated that work,” said Hines. “We’ve got a couple of very quick V-Rod motorcycles to take to Gainesville. For me personally, not making the Countdown last year didn’t sit well at all. I’m very focused on riding better and motivated to be in position to win another championship. We should be in the mix.”

Krawiec, who finished third in the 2013 Pro Stock Motorcycle standings and closed the season with a win at Pomona, has won three times at Gainesville.

“I love to race at Gainesville,” said Krawiec. “I’ve had some success here, and we always have a lot of great Harley-Davidson fans in the area for Bike Week down in Daytona. It has been a long off-season with a lot of hours put in on these Harley bikes, and I’m ready to get out there and pop the clutch.”

Matt Hines, crew chief for the Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines team, led a focused off-season development program.

“This was a very productive off-season, at a more normal pace compared to how hectic it was for us last year,” said Matt Hines. “We had some good ideas for the engines during last season but were waiting for the parts to be manufactured. Now we’ve got those components in place. We learned last year that to win in this class we need to make a perfect run every pass, and we eventually achieved that consistency and got some wins. Now we hope to combine that with more power and steady improvement through the season, so when we get to the Countdown we’ll be even faster.”

The 2014 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle schedule includes 16 events in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. After the first 10 events, the points will be re-set for the top ten riders who have qualified for the Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

LET’S PARTY—
Tomorrow we will post an article about Samson slip-on mufflers for Indians, while I’m hoping to ride a Chieftain to the Smoke Out. I’m going to run over to Chica’s shop tomorrow and finally interview him for his Captain Japan feature on Bikernet.

Then we will coordinate a couple of techs at Bennett’s Performance. We are working with Christine and Bob Le Pera. The Triking Viking is working with Paughco on an article about all their trike conversion kits. Richard Kranzler, our esteemed editor in Chief for Bikernet Baggers is working hard to keep up with all the Daytona images flying at Bikernet Baggers and the Cantina event galleries. Hang on.

That’s just a taste of what’s exploding onto Bikernet daily. Take a break, take a ride, take a girl and find freedom and nirvana. We need it.

Ride Free Forever,
