COAST TO COAST THE PARTY IS STARTING — Thursday News for June 26 2014

What the hell, I woke up this morning with reality kicking me in the teeth. All over the country people are firing up their bikes and heading to events spread out from coast to coast. The West Coast contingent are all riding the canyon up to Born Free, The Mid West crew are all rolling in to the J&P Cycle Open House, And of course we have the rest of them dragging Bandit away from every bar and redhead between Long Beach and the Smoke Out. So what does that mean for me? Well not a hell of a lot as Bandit was kind enough to chain my ass to the desk so that I can keep all the readers up to date on the happening’s of the weekend.

Let’s Hit the News before I chew thru these chains and raid the liquor cabinet hidden around here somewhere.

CLOSE DOWN THE STREET — Bikernet is going to OldTown Idaho, The 5th annual Run What Ya Brung Drags is Taking Over Old Town Id. July 4th weekend.

Run Whatcha Brung Motorcycle Drag Races.
Respect for our Veterans runs deep in the heart of the United States of America.  This respect pours out in an overwhelming response in a small community where a handful of people put on an event of such epic proportions that it turns this small community into a mini Sturgis.

This year will be the 5th annual Run Whatcha Brung Motorcycle Drag Races, all proceeds from this event go to aid Veterans in the needs they have when they return home after being in combat.  Over the years we have donated these proceeds to different organizations such as Honor Flight, The Wounded Warrior Project and this year’s proceeds will go to The Spokane Veterans Forum.

Anyone can check out this organization and the wonderful services they provide.  Visit their website at www.spokaneveteransforum.org

This all began back in 2009, in Oldtown, Idaho.  Oldtown had historically hosted the lawnmower drag races, which is another annual event. These races took place in front of Killing Machine Choppers shop, owned and operated by Peter ‘Algie’ Pirrello.  The shop was given the offer to drag race motorcycles in between heats.  They decided to take them up on the offer; hence the idea was born to have a yearly event that would support our Veterans.

Algie had already formed a relationship with Mike ‘Pysco’ Lovas at a previous event honoring Marines and multiple military organizations.  Last year just a short time after we held the 4th Annual Run Whatcha Brung event, Pysco was hit and killed on his motorcycle in Spokane, Washington.  The loss was devastating to many people who knew and loved him.  This year’s event will be held in Pysco’s honor, for all that he was, and all that he has made us become.  He will never be forgotten.

Algie (Killing Machine Choppers), his better half Lisa, aka ‘Hon’ from Choppers Hair Design, Justin Sprague, aka ‘J-Bird’ and Jamie Zachary all donate their time, money and tireless efforts to gain sponsors for this event. Along with securing Vendors, security personnel, the beautiful track girls, officials on the track and multiple riders to support the event.  This is no small task, since the beginning of this event it has grown dramatically every year.  In 2013 we calculated 2000 riders attended the event.  People came from all over the world, with some as far away as Germany and Australia.  The turnout was a force to be reckoned with, people raced their motorcycles and then rode them back home.  It was truly amazing!

There are multiple raffles for prizes or money, motorcycle games, beer gardens, vendors of all kinds, leather sales, tattooing, food and so much more.  We would like to invite any and all to come and see the event just once.  If you do you will want to keep coming again and again and you will want to bring others with you to enjoy the experience of how a little town that has people with such large hearts turn their respect for all Veterans, into dollars to help them with their needs.  It is our honor to continue to put on this event for as long as possible, our Veteran’s deserve this kind of respect, and we are proud to be a part of it!

This was a little day trip into Mexico as my friend, Eddie, from The Red Garage in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia wanted to visit there. He is in town mostly to attend the Born Free event this weekend. In Malaysia the chopper scene, which Eddie promotes mostly,  is alive and well thus the interest in Born Free.

T J has cleaned up a lot, seems safe and I was assured by the merchants that there are always lots of police around and many CC cameras watching over things. The Caesar salad was a benchmark used to find a great one out of this country. Made at the table and only $8 serving two as a precursor to dinner. The restaurant moved to the new location on revolution being reminiscent of a San Francisco bar and grill. Of course one cannot pass up the iconic donkey photo.

“Biker Battleground Phoenix” to debut Tuesday, July 1 at 10 pm ET/PT.– The series follow 5 builders in Phoenix competing in a biker build-off to build the most outrageous Bagger.

The 5 builders are;

Paul Yaffe (Baggers Nation),

Why should you care about Paul Yaffe? He was the first in Phoenix’s bike builder game and his company is now worth $10 million. Talk about an American success story.

John Shope (Dirty Birds Concepts)

What do you need to know about John Shope? He calls himself the King of Baggers, and is known for “tricked out” bikes sporting custom graffiti paint, flaming exhaust pipes, and more.

Len Edmonson who moved from Canada to Phoenix to be in the show (Azzkikr Customs)

What’s Len’s story? He left behind an $863 million corporate business to follow his motorcycle passion. Now, he builds everything from the ground up, “from frame to paint.”

Kody McNew (Voodoo Customs)

Who’s Kody McNew? New to the Phoenix scene, Kody rides to competitions on his custom bikes, proving that they’re as dependable as they are sexy. With the talent to back up his swagger, he’s a threat to more established builders, though they’d never admit it.

and Brian Jenkins (Hatred Customs)

What’s Brian Jenkins’ story? A former friend of John Shope, he named his shop Hatred Customs after the two had a falling out. Be warned: these two don’t get along.

12 years and still going strong, By The Mad Hungarian

Ohio Bike Week is a bike rally that has gone through many changes in it’s 12 years of existence. Now in its second year of holding the event on the streets of downtown Sandusky, it has become an event worth taking a trip to.

The Central Wyoming Fair grounds were an inviting location for the Casper Iron rally.  Photos and text by David Campbell.

In Wyoming you can never predict what direction the wind will be blowing from but it will always be blowing. For the May weekend the wind blew me to Casper. Fortunately the weather was nice and it was perfect for a motorcycle show. Robert “Bobby” Eldridge had a dream of a bike rally in Casper for 12 years and last year he kicked it off.  He wanted to bring the party to Casper and help out others at the same time; this is the second year for his event, Casper Iron Motorcycle Show and Swap.

It was a lonely yet beautiful ride as the warm winter sunshine beat down upon our faces.  By Scooter Tramp Scotty  (The second story in a series of three)

Memory does not always serve me well, but I believe that the year was 2008, or was it 09?

Michelle had been living from only the back of her $700 motorcycle for five consecutive years and her heavily loaded bike now brought up the rear as my just as heavily burdened Electra Glide beat its fateful rhythm against the warn pavement of this small Mexican highway. Highway 1 was neither crowded nor was it deserted and we saw few vehicles for many a mile. It was a lonely yet beautiful ride as the warm winter sunshine beat down upon our faces.

One year after the rebirth of Indian Motorcycle, the company is looking to set another milestone in Motorcycle history.

And now from Bikernet BAGGERS:

Kicker amp and speaker install, By Rogue

I was having a problem hearing my radio and the music from my plug-ins at anything over 80 MPH. Yea I know that is over most speed limits but it is still how I do a lot of my riding and I am not likely to change that to hear music.

The Fowlers Report — Ohio Mile / June 2014

Fowlers Distribution continues our sponsorship of Steve Garn and Brew Racing. We are glad to bring you the latest report directly from Steve as it pertains to the Ohio Mile earlier this month of June 2014.

June was an exciting month for Brew Racing. The May race event at the Ohio Mile the RD350 achieved a class record for this land speed racing event.

After the May event we went to work on trying to achieve more speed with the RD350. With a new bike and engine it will take a while to get the perfect combination which is why running land speed events can be both satisfying and sometimes can be frustrating.
For the June event we lowered the final drive from the existing 17front/38 rear sprocket combination down to a 16/38. We went over the bike making sure everything was still torqued correctly. The big change was the expansion chambers. 2 stroke exhaust needs to be exact balance of flow and exhaust back wave. The new chambers were designed to improve mid and top-end rpm horsepower.

It is just not that easy just bolting on a new system and then everything runs perfectly, but a re-tuning also.

At the track we kept adjusting the Lectron carbs to get the proper air/fuel mixture on top-end. Lectrons make this job so easy by adjusting the screw for the power jet. No need to take carb apart and change jets like other brands.

The event on Saturday had a crosswind which in areas would just push the bike over to the right side of the course. On one run it was so hard I had to actually let off the throttle to stay on course. With running a new bike in these conditions it was very reassuring I had the best in protective equipment on. The Weise Leathers from Fowler Distribution fit perfectly and the quality is excellent. It was hot on Saturday and the venting really helped a lot for relieve from the heat. The Speed and Strength helmet also was an excellent choice for this race season. It is extremely light and the venting works great for airflow to keep the head cool.

The June event the RD350 came away with another class speed record holder. The RD350 had a gain of 7 mph over the May event which is a step in the right direction. I realize there is much more speed left and still need another gear ratio change which I was going to try that Sunday at the June event but the winds were just too strong.

The next work on the bike will be the gear change and some different portwork and head work. It is a great feeling after you do some work and you get positive results. But, it is also has some disappointment when I know the bike has much more speed in it to come out. Only makes me work harder to achieve what the bike can run!

It really helps when you have the best of equipment and parts to achieve these goals and I have the very best! Thanks Fowler Distribution for the Weise leathers and gloves. Bikers Choice and Tucker Rocky for parts and the Speed and Strength helmet. Thanks Lectron Carbs, Avon Tyres, Spectro Oil, Pro Riders Marketing, Wiseco Pistons, A All Animal Control, LC Fabrication, Loaded Gun Customs and Mt Airy Cyclery for ALL your SUPPORT!

The BORN-FREE Vintage Chopper and Classic Motorcycle Show — The sixth annual Born-Free Vintage Chopper and Classic Cycle Show is about to take place at Southern California’s majestic 17-acre Oak Canyon Ranch Saturday June 28 & 29, 2014.

Born-Free has quickly become “the” place for old and young from all over the world to ride in, see, and talk about old iron for one day. Born-Free 6 is set to bring together tens of thousands of eager spectators and participants as well as over 150 vendors and sponsors, live music, an AMCA regional swapmeet, and for the first time, the show is now two days in 2014!

The Born-Free Show is a back to basics show built on this impromptu action of people building and riding their vintage Harleys, Hondas, Indians, Triumphs (and more) into the show which then becomes “the show”. This is a place where the classics take the spotlight. The show is open to all makes and models and is laid back with voluntary registration and a handful of awards and prizes, but Best In Show gets a trip for themselves and their motorcycle to the Mooneyes Hot Rod & Custom show in Yokohama, Japan this December!

Inside the show there is a special Invited Builder area where 25 up and coming motorcycle builders from all around the world will be debuting the bikes they’ve been building just for this event over the past year. These guys are craftsmen, small shop owners, and garage builders doing their best to push themselves to build something that is unique, well thought out, and finely finished. And to top it all off, at this year’s show you have the chance on Saturday to take home one of 11 of these Invited Builder bikes that range from Harley-Davidson Knuckleheads, Panheads, Shovelheads, a UL, classic Triumphs, and Sunday a custom 1947 Harley Knucklehead chopper and more for only $25! To enter the drawings, a poster with free giveaway ticket combo is for sale online now through Lowbrow Customs with free shipping. Any remaining posters/tickets will be available the day of the show. Must be present to win and choose your new motorcycle and if you don’t win Saturday you can still win Sunday.

BOSS HOSS ABOUT TO HAVE TRIKE CERTS IN AUSTRALIA—I spoke to Doug Zaricor, the boss of Boss Hoss Cycles, Inc. recently. He grappled for five years and jumped through restrictive hoops to obtain a trike certification from Europe. It took his team from 2008 to 2013 when Boss Hoss finally received trike certifications for Europe.

His business revolves around trikes more and more these days. In just two or three weeks Boss Hoss trikes will be certified for sale in Australia. Hang on for more reports.
If you are interested in a monster motorcycle or a V8 powered trike you need to look into this company, a survivor since 1990.

It’s a hot balmy Wednesday evening in the Port of Los Angeles.

Tuesday morning at 4:30 am hit the deck at full throttle, loaded Bandit’s 4 day bed roll in the back of the trusty Ranger and hit the freeway…Bandit’s destination at the crack of dawn… LAX…. then the insane, show of all shows, the Smoke Out on the East coast, arriving late afternoon.  Hide the Jack Daniels and the Red Heads.

The 5-Ball Racing Teams calendar indicates a mere 55 days, 44.44 minutes until we roll out of Los Angeles, destination Las Vegas, 4 hours, 37 minutes, 283.88 miles later, Wed. the 20th of August.

After a relaxing evening in Sin City? Relax? The Team will roll to Wendover, Utah Thursday in the early morning. Arriving late afternoon, 5 hours 55 minutes and 362.31 miles later.

Thursday morning we roll out of Wendover about 15 minutes to “Lands End” and the salt to set up for the 11th year of the Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials.

The past week was a planned Chinese fire drill as we prepped the Raycer for a round trip ride, via Keyboard Carriage Inc. to Dan Thayer’s shop located in New York. www.vtwinfuelinjection.com.  Why New York and Dan Thayer??  Glad you ask.  Dan is the direct link to the fuel injection world, having tuned a few of the fastest bikes on the salt.

The Keyboard driver called at 11:45 Wednesday morning. Be ready in 15 minutes, we’re loading for the cross- country trip.

We were ready and waiting at the curb.

The truck arrived at high noon on the dot. We checked the paperwork, then we carefully secured the Raycer on a very functional, easy to load, patented pallet designed for shipping motorcycles only.

Less than an hour later and the hot rods secure in the truck and Haulin Ass Eastward with an expected arrival in a week.

Stay Tuned as Dan tunes the Raycer for a pass or a few passes on the Bonneville Salt Flats running in the following classes, 3000- A-PBF-PBG, 3000-APS-PBF-PBG.

Road to the Smoke Out– Bandit blasted out of Headquarters mumbling something about Redheads and an Indian waiting for him in somewhere in the middle of the country. No one has heard from him since but we have been receiving cryptic texts and emails from people that have claimed to  see him traveling cross country on his way to the Smoke Out. Keep your eyes peeled and keep us updated as to what the Big Man is up to.
