WHEELS THROUGH TIME– Breaking Attendance Records in 2014–
Hit TV Series and New Member Program Bring New and Returning Visitors.
As the summer of 2014 winds to a close, and many area businesses and attractions being to prepare for another busy leaf season in Western NC, Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley, NC is picking up steam like never before. Since opening for the year in late-March, the museum has hosted over 110,000 visitors making 2014 its busiest season to date. And it doesn’t look to be slowing down any time soon! With the busiest months just around the corner, the all-American transportation museum is poised to add to what has already been a record year.
Museum staff credits part of the museum’s success in 2014 to a very successful second season of Velocity’s hit television series “What’s In The Barn?”, which follows museum curator Dale Walksler and his son Matt across the country in search of motorcycle history in unusual places. Season one aired in June of 2013 and was met with rave reviews from viewers. Season two began in early June of 2014, and since, the museum has been getting busier by the week. The show can be seen in over 60 million homes in the U.S. and dozens of countries around the world.
The museum’s new Seasonal Member Program has also had great success in attracting repeat visitors. When visitors to Wheels Through Time purchase a Museum “Member-Chip” for only $20, they receive a special edition 2014 Wheels Through Time poker chip which designates them as a season ticket holder. With a “Member-Chip”, visitors receive free admission through the duration of the year. 2015 Museum “Member-Chips” will be available in October.
With visitors flocking in by the thousands, Wheels Through Time has continued to develop new exhibits and displays to keep things fresh inside the museum. This year alone, numerous rare and historic machines have been added to the collection, many of which have appeared on episodes of “What’s in the Barn?”. A central feature exhibit showcasing the finds from show is among the most viewed areas in the museum, displaying a range of extraordinary “barn finds” dating back to 1904.
Projections estimate that Wheels Through Time could see over 150,000 visitors total by the close of its 2014 season at the end of November, nearly doubling the museum’s attendance during previous years. And with season three of “What’s in the Barn?” already in the works, its clear that Maggie Valley’s motorcycle paradise is gaining momentum that will last for years to come.

FOX NEWS – U.S. safety regulators are investigating two reports of fires
in Can-Am Spyder three-wheeled motorcycles.
The probe covers about 52,000 motorcycles from the 2008 through 2014 model
years.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in documents
posted Friday that the fires appear to be unrelated to three recalls of
the motorcycles. One Spyder was destroyed last month in a fire while being
used by the Morgantown, West Virginia, Police Department. Another burned
in the Mojave Desert region of California.
The safety agency says it will look into what caused the fires.
Investigations can lead to recalls.
The motorcycles are made by Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. of
Canada. Messages were left seeking comment from the company.
The Morgantown police, in a July 23 complaint to NHTSA, said an officer
was riding the Spyder on a city street and felt heat rising from beneath
the motorcycle. The officer saw flames coming from the engine and moved it
to the side of the road. “Within seconds the vehicle was fully engulfed
and flames caught a yard and two nearby trees on fire,” the complaint
said.
The Fire Department and a city mechanic determined that the fuel system
was the source of the blaze, the complaint said.
No one was injured in either fire, but the police motorcycle was a total
loss.
The three recalls happened in 2012 and 2013, and all involved the risk of
fires. Last year, the company recalled about 8,200 Spyders because brake
fluid leaks could cause fires. In 2012 it recalled about 34,000 because
fuel vapors could leak due to an ill-fitting gas cap. It also recalled
9,600 because fuel vapors could exit a vent hose in the engine
compartment.

HIGHWAY FUNDING BILL CLEARS CONGRESS–The United States Congress has agreed on a temporary patch for the highway trust fund, reports the Motorcycle Riders Foundation. The Senate agreed to the House version of the temporary funding fix for the highway trust fund.
The fix came just hours before the United States Department of Transportation would have had to cut off payments for highway construction projects and mass transit programs. The quick fix will keep the trust fund solvent through mid May of 2015.
The final Senate vote ended a week of legislative ping ponging between the House and Senate. The Senate wanted to modify the legislation so it would expire in December of 2014, thus forcing a vote on a larger highway bill that would address the trust fund issues before the end of this year. The House defeated that legislation, sending its own version to be passed by the Senate, that will run through May and spends $10.8 billion.
The temporary patch kicks the larger issues into the next Congress to be sworn in next year.

UNCLE MONKEY ON THE DRESS CODE OF THE WEST–I’m truly baffled by the large number of riders I see out and about riding with shorts and flip-flop sandals on. It is to the point that every second or third rider is tempting fate by riding with nothing on.
Maybe it is because I learned very early on what protection sandals offer. No I wasn’t foolish enough to be out riding in them. I had parked my bike in the driveway after a long day of riding. After supper and a couple Jack & Coke I had decided to push the bike into the garage, so I slipped on my sandals and grabbed a hold of the handlebars and pushed. The bike went forward but my footwear stayed behind. It was a sobering moment. They were good quality, still fairly new but the momentum to get the bike moving just pushing it was too much for them to handle.
The local insurance company SGI mandated that new riders have to wear complete protective gear including full face helmets as a way to instill good riding habits before the bad ones set in. Still I am amazed to watch as rider after rider drags his sandaled feet across the intersection. They should know better – first to pick their damn feet up but to be wearing proper footwear.
Hell, I would even accept skater sneakers compared to what they are wearing. The thing is that proper footwear has always been a requirement for riding. It is a Canadian fineable offence to not be wearing shoes while riding. I’m not sure where the idea came from. Maybe the increase lack of clothing is because of the recent heat wave that has finally come to the province.
Sadly people ride in hotter weather. Maybe they dress like that, because they think they are being cool, the polar opposite of the full gear wearing novice riders. Maybe they are just not that smart.
One of the driving reasons behind the recent rate increases SGI tried to implement was because of the high cost of medical claims. I can only imagine how expensive a skin graft to the bottom of the foot is plus all the time off from work while it heals. Is it really worth it?

It is one of the greatest events that exists. Between the big name live bands, motorcycle parade, swap meet and dealers, stunt show, food, and antique & motorcycle show it always draws a immeasurable crowd of great motorcycle folks. Then the big race is on Sunday.

NEW INDIAN MOTORCYCLES HELP SMALL PARTS MANUFACTURER THRIVE– When Polaris Industries acquired Indian Motorcycle in 2011 the team at Aeromach USA immediately began thinking about new products that could be manufactured.
Aeromach is a Charlotte, NC-based manufacturer of billet aluminum motorcycle accessories. It wasn’t until late 2013 that the first all-new motorcycles arrived in dealer showrooms. By November, Paul Aiken, owner of Aeromach, had acquired a Chief Classic and began designing products.
“The first thing I noticed on the test ride of the new bike was the lack of a heel shift lever”, Aiken commented, “many riders, especially those coming off Harley-Davidsons were accustomed to shifting up through the gears with their heel.”
It wasn’t long before the Aeromach Heel Shifter for Indian Motorcycles was designed and produced in their Charlotte, NC shop. Demand was so high for the part the delivery time stretched to 6 weeks. To meet the demand, a second CNC milling machine was added to produce the parts more quickly.
Once the parts are machined they are hand polished and chrome plated, adding 4 weeks to the production time. “We had a waiting list of over 150 heel shifters at one point and we were running them all day long just to meet the demand”, Aiken stated. “It took Indian Motorcycles until August of this year to release their version of the shift lever but demand for the Aeromach version remains high. Ours fits the floorboard better and allows riders more room to move their feet around on the floorboards, we even got an order from an Indian Motorcycle employee because he likes our version better.”
The 2015 Indian Motorcycle line was recently shown at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and the news is good for Aeromach. In addition to adding a fourth model that can use the heel shifter, Indian also released the 2015 Indian Scout, a smaller motorcycle that appeals to new as well as experienced riders. “We have another blank canvas to design parts for and we are looking forward to making parts for the Scout as soon as we can get our hands on one”, Aiken said.

MRF ALERT, BACON GREASE POWERED MOTORCYCLE–MINNPOST-
Hormel has created a motorcycle that runs on bacon grease. Trey Mewes of
the Austin Daily Herald has the details of the retrofitted 2011 Track T-800 CDI diesel motorcycle that Hormel and marketing firm BBDO Minneapolis are taking from Austin to the International Bacon Film Festival in San Diego, California.
They are filming the trip to promote Hormel’s Black Label Bacon product. Under the headline Pork torque, the Washington Times had this quote: “The exhaust smells like bacon”. So when we cruise past you, you’ll thank us, the project organizers say, adding

The planets and the stars appear to be aligning perfectly for the Bonneville Speed Trials. Looks like the Salt Gods are very happy.
Bright and early Sunday morning the 24th, with a wave of the starters flag in a figure-eight and it’s time for our moment on the salt. A moment in time with information recorded, a number your team alone can claim. Some Salt Pilots are fortunate enough to accomplish their life long dreams recording their fastest personal time. In some cases the number qualifies for a coveted class record.
This morning Dr. Willie and I loaded and delivered the Raycer to the Team at Twins Turbo for completion of the intercooler. The Twins are installing a dry ice tray, sealing the tail section and adding a pair of scoops for big gulps of cool air while traveling at warp speeds on the infamous Bonneville Salt Flats.
Missed the news last week while on the road heading to Sturgis. Hauled Ass early Wednesday the 30th out of Bikernet Headquarters, destination, Sturgis, 1,300 miles later. Arrived first light Friday morning, Exit 32 to set up for Lyndall Racing Brakes with the Unknown Industries. The FXRs are equipped with composite rotors, taking advantage of their near weightlessness, their handling advantages and superior stopping power. We’re running a pair of 320mm forever black on the Busa frontend. Stopping is a good thing once in awhile.

He tuned the 124-inch R&R Cycle/Hyperformance Twin Cam engine, Daytona Twin Tech Gen 4 computer, Horsepower Inc. 62mm Throttle Body, Marc Susman air plenum, kicked with a Spyke starter and charging system, Rivera Pro Clutch w/ lockup.

Harley RECALLS Bikes For Ignition Switch Problem–DETROIT (AP) — Ignition switch problems that have plagued General Motors and Chrysler have now turned up in the motorcycle business.
Harley-Davidson is recalling more than 4,500 FXDL Dyna Low Rider bikes worldwide because engine vibration can turn the switches from “on” to “accessory.”
The recall covers motorcycles from the 2014 ½ model year, including more than 3,300 in the U.S. If the motorcycles have been modified to rev higher than 5,600 RPMs, an engine mount bracket can vibrate excessively, causing the problem.
Dealers will replace the bracket assembly and ignition switch knob for free.
Harley said in documents posted Friday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the motorcycles are limited at the factory to 5,600 RPMs, but Harley offers performance calibrations that let the engine rev higher than the limit.
If the bikes hit 5,800 RPMs, the top engine mount bracket can vibrate too much and cause the ignition switches to malfunction. The company said it began looking into the problem after its service department discovered that an ignition switch slipped out of the “on” position in testing. Harley found four warranty claims and complaints about the problem, all in bikes with non-Harley exhaust systems.
The Milwaukee company’s recall comes after General Motors recalled 17.3 million vehicles to fix problems with ignition switches that can cause engine stalling. Chrysler has recalled another 1.7 million for the same problem. So far this year the auto industry has recalled more than 40 million vehicles, passing the old full-year record of 30.8 million set in 2004.
Federal safety regulators in June began a broad investigation of ignition- switch and air-bag problems across the auto industry. That investigation is still open, although the agency wouldn’t say if more automakers could be affected.
Harley said it issued the recall independently, and it has nothing to do with ignition switch problems in the auto industry or the NHTSA investigation.The investigation and recalls come after GM bungled an ignition-switch recall of older small cars. GM acknowledged that it knew of the ignition problem for more than a decade but failed to recall the cars until earlier this year, when it recalled 2.6 million small cars such as the Chevrolet Cobalt. Subsequent safety reviews caused GM to recall millions more vehicles
for faulty switches.

THIS WEEKEND WILL BE A SCRAMBLE—Here’s my list. I need to watch the History Channel Battleground Phoenix bagger build-off episode, but I can’t figure out where and when it airs.
This weekend will be devoted to installing a new shift-only battery in the Bonne Belle, new rear pegs made by the Departure Bike Works team in Richmond, VA. I need to mount the kill switch to a chunk of 7/8-inch tubing. I need to machine a thicker shift rod spacer, install a Biltwell P-Pad to the tank for Dr. Feng’s chin. I asked George, the Wild Brush, to come over and patch the frame where a few tabs were removed. And I need to run some venting oil lines.
Then it’s the daunting guess-work of packing for the salt, loading a lift and just the right selection of tools. Don’t forget a hacksaw.
A brother just bought a Cushman cycle and mentioned it at dinner in Sturgis. I said I had an engine and he got excited. When it comes to brothers, I would rather give it to a good home than to negotiate some sort of deal.
An issue cropped up on Tuesday, when Chris Maida showed up with Dain Ginger. The editor of American Iron wanted to ride the Bonne Belle on the salt. After he climbed on the lift and determined that the bike would fit him perfectly he announced his glitch. He missed the deadline for applying for an AMA racer’s license. His hopes were shattered.
I was relieved. Dr. Feng had committed to ride the 45 classic. I also had another contender, Andie the little drag racing champ. I called her and she fell into a similar category—no license. I keep my word. I don’t care if Jay Leno said he would ride my bike, if I made a commitment, I honor it. It’s the code of the west. We could give another rider the experience of making a pass, but only after Dr. Feng got to do his thing.
Have a helluva weekend and no matter what, keep your word.
