This is going to be good. Sturgis is behind us. And over the last couple of months I’ve had the privilege of roaming through about seven, maybe eight states. Holy shit, but I’ll bet Ray C. Wheeler has me beat by a long shot.
Just returned from Oregon with the Redhead of Redheads. She’d had enough of Portland State University, after seven years. Portland is strange. Did you know 90 percent of the folks in Oregon live in Portland. I could feel the congestion and over-crowding on every winding pine tree lined street, packed with houses, apartment housing, condos, and strip malls. I was glad to roll south.
Let’s hit the news. I’m glad to be back at the headquarters, where the projects will sing again.

THE SEMA CLASS OF 2015– A recruiting effort initiated in 2015 has once again brought an impressive number of lawmakers into the State Automotive Enthusiast Leadership Caucus. With 151 new members signing up so far this year, the group now numbers more than 700 members representing all 50 states. Founded in 2005 and supported by the SEMA Action Network (SAN), the caucus is designed as a non-partisan group of state legislators whose common thread is a love and appreciation for automobiles. To follow is the complete list of those who have joined this year.
Legislative Front Lines
Ben Knaus is shown here climbing the Rubicon Trail in his 1985 Toyota pickup—only one of many places he enjoys using the truck. Other locations include Pismo, Hollister, Carnegie and Swamp Lake. He purchased it in his freshman year of college. “The Toyota was pretty much stock when I bought it,” says Ben. “During the process of doing the custom lift and steering, I decided to switch my college major to mechanical engineering and really developed my love of suspension design.”
“I’ve always liked messing with mechanical items growing up,” Ben Knaus explains. He learned to drive using his grandfather’s Ford F-150 on the family farm, leading to a lifelong love affair with trucks. “I have been a truck guy forever. I currently drive a late-model F-150 but would love to have a classic F-100 at some point.” However, it’s his 1985 Toyota (pictured above) that holds a special place for Ben. It’s the first vehicle he modified from the ground up. Knaus believes in having a vehicle that allows him to try out new ideas. “You form a special bond with any vehicle that you’re constantly tinkering on.”
Joining the Poly Goats 4×4 Club at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, directly led to the purchase of the Toyota rock crawler and subsequent career in the industry. He says, “They were a great group and I am still very involved, even though I no longer live locally or am a student. There’s also a huge alumni following, so we get together to go wheeling pretty regularly.” Despite a natural attraction to OHVs (off- highway vehicles), Knaus has been looking for a ‘64-‘66 Chevrolet Chevelle after catching the muscle car bug while working at Hellwig Products . “I still have plenty of time to add more cars and check some off of my ‘dream car’ list too!”
Over time Ben has become increasingly involved with land-use organizations. He keeps up with local clubs like the Central Valley Crawlers, whose volunteers seek to keep the trails open and running. His membership in the California Off-Road Vehicle Association (CORVA), the California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs, Inc., the Blue Ribbon Coalition and the SEMA Action Network (SAN) supports the same cause. “I think the SAN’s mission is very important. My hobby, my job, basically everything in my life is affected by automotive legislation,” he says. “I see trails and recreational areas shrinking or closing entirely. If we don’t work together to keep these lands open, they will eventually disappear. It’s everyone’s responsibility to help out. Public officials need to hear our voices.”

Brad Baker (Eatonville WA) – High sided at the Superprestigio and broke the radial head replacement that was installed in April 2014. He also dislocated his shoulder and fractured his humerus.

Buster McCoy (Trenton SC) – was racing in Land O’Lakes FL and had a rider go down in front of him. Had nowhere to go and the impact from hitting the ground broke his collarbone in two places.

Steve Nichols (Tulsa OK) – Steve was participating in the Henry Half Mile and hit the outside fence coming off turn four. His foot got bent back under the foot peg and was knocked unconscious. He received massive internal injuries, a concussion, and had a toe amputated.

Michael Hill (Portland OR) – Michael was racing in the Amateur Nationals in DuQuoin IL when another bike came up high on him and he had nowhere to go. He hit the air fence and the wall, fracturing his tibia. His Mom had to fly in from OR to bring him home for additional treatment.

Shawn Baer (Bethel PA) – Shawn had a nasty get off at the Indy Mile. Between turns 1 and 2 he got into the air fence – sending him into the air and breaking his bike in half. He was treated for a concussion.

Jacob Cascio (Gilroy CA) – Jacob was at an open practice event at Perris Speedway when a bike in front of him entering turn three low sided. He tried to avoid crashing into him and clipped the bike with his, flipping him over the handle bars and was hit by another bike. This caused the bike to flip over and land on his leg and the exhaust pipe left him with third degree burns. He spent several days in the burn unit, had two surgeries, and is now under the care of his parents.

Charles Holm (New Ulm MN) – while practicing at the Flying Dutchman Motorcycle Club, it appeared that the front end of his vintage bike broke and he had a hard crash. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital where it was discovered he had a broken back.

Congressional Reform Act of 2015
1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman/woman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they’re out of office.
2. Congress (past, present, & future) participates in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately.
All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.
3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.
4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.
6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.
7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen/women are void effective 12/1/15. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen/women.
Congress made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and go back to work.
If each person contacts a minimum of twenty people, then it will only take three days for most people (in the U.S. ) to receive the message. Don’t you think it’s time?

GUN NUT ALERT– California: Los Angeles Mayor Signs Large-Capacity Magazine Ban Ordinance
On Friday, August 7, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti signed Council File 13-0068 into law, which will take effect on September 19, 2015.
This means that residents of Los Angeles who legally possess magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition must sell those magazines, remove them from the city, or turn them over to Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) by November 20, 2015. All California residents, except for a special few, will be precluded from entering the City of Los Angeles with such magazines. In addition to being a flawed policy that inhibits one’s inherent right to self-defense, this is extremely problematic because it is almost impossible to go any significant distance in Southern California without passing through the City of Los Angeles.
What Is Considered a “Large Capacity Magazine”
Los Angeles’ definition of a “large-capacity magazine” is identical to that found in California Penal Code section 16740. This includes any ammunition feeding device with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.There are three notable exceptions:
1) Any feeding device that has been permanently altered so that it cannot hold more than 10 rounds;
2) Any .22 caliber tube ammunition feeding device; and
3) Any tubular magazine that is contained in a lever-action firearm.
This definition is applicable whether the magazine is assembled or disassembled. There are also several uses and categories of individuals that are exempt from the magazine ban. Those exemptions can be viewed here (page 6).
You may store your magazines outside of Los Angeles. Be aware, however, that storing your magazines with friends or family outside of Los Angeles may qualify as an “unlawful transfer” under state law.

With Los Angeles taking this misguided step, it is becoming even more likely that other California cities will follow suit.

FLAGSTAFF TO VEGAS RUN–
Wednesday blasted down the hill for a hot two-night stop in Vegas. We rode from the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Cloudy, rainy, and cold in mid 50s. I snivel a lot, but we had a blast, and of course Vegas was blistering until we luxuriated in Casino air conditions and hit the pool.

INK N IRON NASHVILLE FLOPS– Attendees Call Ink N Iron Festival A Flop.
NASHVILLE, Tenn – The last of the Ink and Iron Festival started coming down Monday, but there are plenty of people who will tell you it started coming apart Friday night.
“We didn’t find out until as they were supposed to come on stage,” one fan said Friday night as they learned headliner Merle Haggard would not be taking the stage.
Haggard tweeted that he would not perform his Friday show because of a contract issue.
He had performed the previous night, but sources say he hadn’t been paid.
“A few of the tattoo vendors even said it was a little unorganized and they were unsure about what days and where they could set up,” said another attendee leaving the canceled Haggard concert.
That was Friday, vendors and attendees say the rest of the weekend didn’t go much better.
“It’s expected for a promoter to lie. It’s not expected for a promoter to lie this big,” said Neil Autry, who traveled from Pennsylvania to sell his Western Evil clothing line.
Autry says he had to pay $700 dollars for his spot on Bicentennial Mall and with 40,000 people expected to show up it shouldn’t have been hard to make back.
“I did not make back the money that I had to invest into the show,” he said. “I know the gentleman had a stand next to me only made five dollars. We were told on Friday that presales were 10,000 for Friday alone and no one was in there.”
“Sunday was billed as one of the major days, and they were running for the hills,” said vendor Jon Drew who also traveled from out of state to take part in the festival.
Trace Edwards is a spokesperson for Ink N Iron. He says the festival has been wildly popular in Long Beach, Calif. for more than a decade.
Edwards says the festival moved to Nashville this year because the city had courted organizers.
“There was probably less people through the gate than anybody could have anticipated for the amount of advertising and marketing,” Edwards said.
He says the vendors at the tattoo side of the festival all made money. The tattoo convention was inside Municipal Auditorium.
The music, motorcycle and food truck side of the festival was at Bicentennial Mall a few blocks away.

“We did lose money due to low attendance,” Bringle said via email. “There was a fee to vend and we did not even make back that fee, let alone the wasted food and labor cost. It was bad enough that we did not man our booth and sell on Sunday.”
Bringle says all of the extra food prepared for the weekend was donated to a local homeless shelter.
“We’ve had a learning curve here in Nashville,” Edwards said. “But we’ve learned a lot and we’ll fix it. We’ve got a five year deal with the park.”
But plenty say they will not be back.

THIRTEEN YEARS AND COUNTING– anatomy of an EPA civil rights investigation
A complaint filed against the New Mexico Environment Department in 2002 remains open, to the exasperation of the complainant.
SANTA FE, New Mexico — On June 26, 2014, Deborah Reade got a certified letter from the Environmental Protection Agency that was nearly a decade in the making.
“During the course of the EPA’s investigation,” the letter read, “it was determined that additional information is needed to clarify this allegation.”
Reade was incredulous.
Her original complaint to the EPA’s Office of Civil Rights, in 2002, seemed like a lifetime ago. Back then, she was research director for a group called Citizens for Alternatives to Radioactive Dumping. She’d alerted the agency to a potential pattern of discrimination against Spanish-speaking residents by the New Mexico Environment Department.
Her complaint focused on Triassic Park, a proposed commercial hazardous-waste disposal site, and a public participation process she said made it hard for poor and Spanish-speaking residents to voice concerns. The project was permitted by the state in 2002. Three years later, the EPA agreed to investigate Reade’s claims.
Then: silence, for nine years. Reade moved on, disillusioned with the process. Now, the EPA was pulling her back in.
“When I got this [2014 letter], I kind of groaned, ‘Really?’ ” Reade said during an interview in her Santa Fe home. “I was like, ‘Oh no. I don’t even remember how to do any of this,’ you know?”
By all accounts, Reade should have been free of the matter years ago.
EPA regulations dictate the timeline the Office of Civil Rights must follow when investigating complaints of discrimination allegedly committed by recipients of EPA funding. Within five days of delivery, the EPA must acknowledge receipt of the complaint and within 20 days decide if an investigation will occur. The investigation itself should take no more than 180 days, barring special circumstances.
The office’s director, Velveta Golightly-Howell, declined to comment on the Triassic Park investigation. She said, however, that “cases do age. That is just the nature of civil rights programs.”
Deborah Reade and other members of Citizens for Alternatives to Radioactive Dumping filed a civil-rights complaint with the EPA in 2002, alleging discrimination against Spanish-speaking residents in Chaves County. The EPA accepted the case in 2005 but waited another nine years to ask for more information from the complainants. The case is pending.

A Center for Public Integrity review of 265 complaints filed from 1996 to 2013 shows that the EPA has failed to adhere to its own timelines: On average, the office took 350 days to decide whether to accept a complaint and allowed cases to stretch 624 days from start to finish. A consultant’s report, which examined cases from 1993 to 2010, found that the agency accepted or rejected just 6 percent within the allotted time period. Half took a year or more to be adjudicated.
Reade’s case — and the nearly decade-long investigation — is an extreme, but not unique, example of the agency missing its mark.
The EPA’s online docket, last updated in March, lists 17 cases accepted for investigation that are still awaiting disposition. The earliest was filed in 1994, the most recent in 2013.
