I’ve noticed and was challenged by a trend of late. I spotted shops selling their wares using words like culture, markets, millennia, art, and such. There’s something strange about those words to some of us old bikers.
We were in the game because we loved it, found the romance, adventure, and intrigue in the middle of the night slipping between cops, girl’s apartments, and …
Hell, we didn’t care about making money. We just did our thing, and hoped we had enough change in our pockets at the end of the week for some weed, whiskey, women, and chrome.
Speaking of adventures. I’m getting that buzz again as we loaded my van with our Salt Torpedo, 5-Ball Racing, streamlined trike parts and start the trek to Paughco, in Carson City, about a frame. Shortly the reports will be flying.

CHEROKEE CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN ANTIQUE MOTORCYCLE CLUB NEWS–
I wanted to share yet another new program at Cherokee. Our BoD’s hand-selected and appointed Regional Ambassadors in 14 different geographical regions around Texas and Oklahoma. By doing so we have essentially filled in most of the big blank spaces on the AMCA TX/OK Map. Something Mr. Davis, Director if Chapters and your Board has wanted to do for quite some time down here.
We will be adding our TX/OK website map soon to include the City/Region & associated Cherokee Regional Ambassador name & contact information for any Vintage and Classic Motorcycle Enthusiast whom lives near or moves to these locations. This will be a far more effective way in allowing existing and potential AMCA members to find a local Chapter group of our members to ride and socialize with.
As you know, right now the only listing on the AMCA website for Cherokee is our corporate address in Austin TX. This has caused some confusion to those enthusiasts who look for an AMCA Chapter near them in other parts of TX and OK. We respectfully ask that you add these appropriate city/regional locations and contact info on the AMCA website when you can find time. I can forward all data to you upon request.
Our Oklahoma Director Lyle Henry has published his 2016 Strategic Plan and Goals to promote the AMCA throughout all of Oklahoma. We signed up three new members last month in Tulsa which is a good start in establishing a strong AMCA base there as well. This past weekend a large group of Oklahoma members met for lunch and spent the day riding together as well.

Autotrader/Monster Energy/Yamaha’s Weston Peick began the opening lap of 450SX Heat 1 inside of the top-five. He battled for position throughout the six-lap qualifier, ultimately finishing in fourth place to earn his spot in the Main Event.
Justin Brayton quickly went to work aboard his BTO Sports/WPS/KTM in 450SX Semi 1, passing for second place on Lap 1 and closing in on the leader. He eventually settled for second, just ahead of fellow Pirelli racer, TPJ Racing’s Nick Schmidt in fifth place.
Kyle Cunningham powered his Motorcycle Superstore Suzuki to claim the 450SX LCQ holeshot, logging consistent laps to take the win and transfer to the Main Event.
As the gate dropped for the 450SX Class Main Event, Brayton found himself toward the front of the field, circulating the first lap in sixth place. During the early stages of the race, he was under heavy pressure from Peick as they paced each other lap after lap. Brayton finished strong to claim sixth place, while Peick crossed the line in eighth.
Schmidt started the Main Event just outside of the top-10, which put him in a good position to battle for his best finish of the season. The privateer battled hard to an impressive 16th place.
It was a last minute decision for Cunningham to lineup for the Main Event after a big crash earlier in the day, but he decided to lineup and attempt to race. The pain proved to be too much as he was forced to retire from the race early on Lap 9. He was credited with 19th place.
Matt Bisceglia started just inside the top-10 of 250SX Class Heat 1 aboard his MAD Racing/Dirt Candy Graphics/Suzuki, but rode strong the entire race to transfer directly to the Main Event via a seventh place finish.
Motorcycle Superstore Suzuki’s Jimmy Albertson qualified by crossing the checkered flag just behind Bisceglia in eighth place. TPJ Racing’s Cody Church used a third place in the 250 LCQ to make his first Main Event of the season.
In the 250SX Class Main Event, Bisceglia grabbed an excellent start using his SCORPION MX32 tires and took over the lead before the pack reached the second turn. He led the talented field of riders for several laps, eventually surrendering the lead as he battled for a podium position. The Texan fought-hard the entire 15 laps, which helped him secure third place as he rounded out the podium. He now has three career 250SX podium finishes.
A chaotic start to the race collected Albertson, leaving him near the tail end of the field when he rounded the opening lap. Despite the misfortune, he was able to salvage a 17th place finish. Church gained valuable experience in his first main event of the season, finishing 21st.
The eleventh round of Monster Energy Supercross takes place next Saturday, March 19th from Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

OFF ROAD LEGISLATION INTRODUCED
U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein has introduced legislation that would designate five existing off-highway-vehicle recreation areas encompassing 142,000 acres as permanent Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Areas. The AMA is reviewing the merits of the Feinstein bill.
STURGIS MOTORCYCLE MUSEUM HALL OF FAME
Trailblazer Hall of Famer Buddy Stubbs plus Bert Baker, Jerry Covington, John Penton, and Gary Spellman will be inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame at the annual Rally on August 10, 2016. Congratulations to all of them.
GARY PRESTON R.I.P.
Gary was a District 37 Desert Racer for over 20 years and a multi Baja “1000” winner with team mate, Larry Bergquist. He was a founding member of the Buzzards MC. He died suddenly in the town of Baker, Ca. on February 24th, while on a trip to the desert. His services were held in Glendora on Saturday, March 12th. Erik Bergquist said that Gary was his dad’s most loyal and dearest friend and will be sorely missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
FASTEST LAP AWARD
The AMA announced that Ohlins USA, known for suspension technology will be sponsoring an award for the fastest lap at each round of the 2016 AMA Pro Flat Track season.
ROUND 12 OF AMA PRO FLAT TRACK IN NEW YORK
Another race has been added to the season. On August 20 Round 12 will be held at the Central New York Raceway Park (CNYRP). It is an all new facility in Central Square, NY, north of Syracuse. Also a new racing surface, called SYNDI, a synthetic wax additive mixed with clay. It is supposed to be dustless and dries quicker. About time.

Eddie Castro is a cancer survivor. He has finished the last of his chemo and started racing again. HIs first race was Ventura. We all wish him the very best in his recovery and racing.

HELMET LAWS STILL UP IN THE AIR
A bill to repeal Nebraska’s mandatory helmet law passed but it is being heavily protested. In Tennessee a bill is stalled in committee. Both bills would allow riders 21 and older to choose, but each has stipulations about insurance and/or a hike in fees.
Meanwhile, in Bhagalpur, India, you can’t buy fuel and there are fines and penalties if you don’t have a helmet on.
DON’T SPLIT LANE IN COLORADO
An 8-5 vote killed lane splitting in Colorado. That was close considering the chairman of the committee and the Highway Patrol were against it. They claimed there was not enough evidence to show lane splitting was safe.
BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY
Bonneville got support from state legislators in February. A resolution urges the U.S Bureau of Land Management to restore the speedway “to safe high-speed racing conditions.”
The House Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment Committee passed it unanimously. The AMA, Save the Salt Coalition the Utah Alliance and others are working on a plan to save the Bonneville Salt Flats. The 2015 racing events were canceled due to a depletion of salt.

THERE’S HOPE FOR PERFORMANCE— Members of both chambers of Congress have introduced versions of a bill that would prevent the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from regulating the conversion of street motorcycles and other motor vehicles into competition-only racers. The EPA failed to provide proper notice of this regulation, including it in an unrelated heavy-duty-truck regulation. The proposed rule would hurt thousands of amateur and professional motorcycle racing enthusiasts and the millions of fans who enjoy motorcycle competition.
The bi-partisan Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2016 (H.R. 4715 and S. 2659, RPM Act) would ensure that converting motor vehicles into competition-only vehicles remains legal. Street motorcycles are considered motor vehicles under the Clean Air Act.
The RPM Act was introduced in the House by U.S. Reps. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.), Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), Richard Hudson (R-N.C.), Bill Posey (R-Fla.) and Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.).
The Senate version was introduced by U.S. Sens. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Dean Heller (R-N.C.).
We need to pay very close attention to this. Our industry hangs in the balance.

The sight was very shocking and he immediately barfed up the chili back into the bowl. The old biker quietly says, ‘Yep, that’s as far as I got, too.’
I changed my motorcycle horn to gunshot sounds. People move out of the way much faster now.

NOT SO ACCURATE NEWS OF THE WEEK– Feds Plan To Ban Biker Clubs From Wearing Logos.
Federal law enforcement plans to ban fight back against biker gangs by banning them from wearing group logo patches on their jackets. Claiming that “the logo itself furthers a criminal enterprise,” prosecutors say that groups like the Mongols Nation should have the rights to their group’s logo seized by the federal government.
Police claim that if biker gangs could be stripped of their logos, this would in turn diminish their power.
Prosecutors say that this plan essentially seeks to claim rights to their logos. Without the logos, the government believes that their power will somehow wane.
A source told Fox News that “It not just stripping them of their identity, or robbing them of a recruiting tool, it’s taking the star off their helmet. The logo itself furthers a criminal enterprise.”
Donald Charles Davis, the author of the book Aging Rebel: Dispatches From The Motorcycle Outlaw Frontier, claims that this is being seen as “just a first step to what the government wants to do to all motorcycle clubs. They want to outlaw motorcycle clubs by taking their insignia away from them.”
To complicate this bizarre approach, the Mongols Nation badge was actually registered as a trademark in 2005, by the group itself. But it was prohibited in 2008 when the ATF arrested more than 100 members of the group.
The ban then was later lifted. But the government is still apparently planning on claiming rights to the logo and others once legal precedence is set with the Mongols.
The case is due to be heard in a Los Angeles court on June 2nd. We will keep you updated on the case and the implications it has for the rest of us who are not in biker gangs, who the government may nevertheless oppose.

Second-Annual Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis Announced– Call for Open Nominations through “Hero’s Ride of a Lifetime”
Today Full Vision Productions announced that the second annual Veterans Charity Ride to Sturgis (VCR) will be hosted in summer 2016 and a new nomination program, “Hero’s Ride of a Lifetime,” has been added. Starting in Los Angeles, California on July 30, the nine-day ride to Sturgis, SD will provide twenty veterans a chance to use motorcycle therapy as a way to decompress from the challenges of post-war life.
Founded in 2015 by veteran Army Paratrooper Dave Frey and Emmy-award winning director Robert Manciero, VCR uses motorcycle therapy to provide a healing and fun experience for a select group of veterans who need support.
“Giving veterans an outlet for their stress, and creating a way for them to find emotional balance, is critical,” said ride founder Dave Frey. “As a veteran myself, I’ve used long motorcycle rides for years as a mechanism to decompress. It occurred to me that others would benefit from the power of motorcycle therapy. VCR provides a group of veterans with the benefits of riding, plus a camaraderie and brotherhood that veterans often have difficulty finding on their own.”
The challenges for veterans are well documented. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and difficulties with re-assimilation to civilian life are common. Iraq and Afghanistan veterans – many who are still young individuals – are facing a major crisis, with an estimated 20 percent of those veterans having PTSD and/or depression according to a 2014 survey*. Motorcycle therapy is one of several effective therapies for veterans seeking relaxation, peace of mind and enjoyment.
VCR 2016 will give 15 ambulatory and five amputee/disabled veterans of various military branches – the majority of whom are post-9/11 vets – the opportunity to work toward overcoming their post-war challenges on the open road.
Riding from Los Angeles to Sturgis, the veterans travel through the most scenic back roads of the western United States on the latest Indian Motorcycle models, some with Champion sidecars and custom trikes. They experience the great outdoors and the beauty this country has to offer, using motorcycles as a mechanism for healing. Along the ride route, the group will stop in small towns to meet with other veterans, supporters and riders, and participate in various adventures, including off-road excursions, and street rallies.
Upon arrival in Sturgis, the group is treated to a special “Hero’s Welcome” and have a week-long “ultimate rider” experience, taking part in the world-famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and further solidifying a brother/sisterhood that was formed on the open roads of the Wild West.
In addition to the veterans chosen by the sponsoring team from various organization, the new program “Hero’s Ride of a Lifetime”, enables the public to nominate two deserving veterans to join the ride.
People are asked to visit VeteransCharityRide.org/heros-ride to nominate their favorite post-9/11 veteran and describe why he or she is deserving of this amazing experience. Two heroes will be chosen to join the group – one rider (motorcycle license and experience required) and one amputee/disabled veteran (motorcycle license not necessary), who will ride in a donated Champion Sidecar. The online nomination program will run from March 4 through April 15.

AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame creates more inclusive rules, expands
accessibility
PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation has
enacted changes for the American Motorcyclist Association Motorcycle
Hall of Fame that increase the Hall of Fame’s inclusiveness.
The changes include:
* A Highly Qualified Candidate category that will empower the
independent Hall of Fame Selection Committees to nominate candidates
whose accomplishments have taken place outside the public eye but have
played a significant role in motorcycling.
* Starting with the Hall of Fame Class of 2016, all AMA Life Members
with at least 25 consecutive years of membership will be invited to vote
for Hall of Fame inductees. This includes all AMA Charter Life Members
and paid AMA Life Members who have at least 25 consecutive years of
membership.
In addition, in recognition of the past and ongoing financial support
that the AMA and its members contribute to the AMHF, all current AMA
members who show their valid AMA card will receive free entry into the
Hall of Fame museum.
“Over the past few years, we have implemented changes to improve the
management of the museum and bring transparency to the selection
process, and now we are proud to do even more to expand the
inclusiveness of motorcycling’s Hall of Fame — for nominees and for
voters,” said AMA Board Chair Maggie McNally-Bradshaw.
The Highly Qualified Candidate category gives the independent Hall of
Fame Selection Committees a tool to recognize advocates and other
behind-the-scenes workers whose accomplishments have played a major role
in motorcycling but go unnoticed because they avoided the limelight.
“We’re also excited to share the Hall of Fame voting responsibility
with all of our 25-plus-year AMA Life Members,” McNally-Bradshaw said.
“This is a huge step in involving our members in what is their Hall of
Fame and museum, and will further expose our nominees to all riders, not
just race fans.”
Hall of Fame voting is done electronically through independent voting
firm VoteNet. To participate in the Class of 2016 vote, AMA Life Members
with at least 25 consecutive years of membership must have have a valid
email address on file with the AMA, which administers the Hall of Fame
voting process. Eligible voters with a valid email address on file will
be contacted to vote in May.
Over the next two months, the AMA will request updated email addresses
for eligible voters. AMA Life Members with at least 25 consecutive years
of membership who believe they do not have updated information on file
with the AMA are invited to update their information now by emailing
their AMA number, name, postal address, phone number and email address
to lifemembers@ama-cycle.org.
Previously, Hall of Fame voting was limited to living Hall of Famers,
the boards of the AMA and AMHF and the independent Hall of Fame

The 125-pound reptile named Rambo wears clothes, rides on the back of a motorcycle and has a bedroom in Mary Thorn’s home in Lakeland.
Thorn has had a license for the alligator she’s kept for 11 years, but it recently grew to 6-feet and wildlife officials say that size alligator must have 2.5 acres of land. Thorn tells the Orlando Sentinel that even if she had land available, Rambo can’t be left outdoors because of sensitivity to sunlight.
Thorn takes Rambo to schools and charity events to teach people about reptiles. She says she has trained him not to bite.
Florida wildlife commission spokesman Gary Morse says Thorn’s case is under investigation.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON REPORTS ON EVENT MARKETING– Raising our game at events to grow product and brand awareness, Welcoming Riders in a Big Way at 75th Daytona Bike Week.
Harley-Davidson has had a long-standing and vital connection to Daytona Bike Week and has greatly increased its presence at this year’s event, which marks its 75th anniversary.
“Daytona Bike Week is the kick off to the riding season, and around this time, riders are starting to get antsy to get out on their bikes,” said Christian Walters, United States Managing Director for Harley-Davidson.
Events like Daytona Bike Week have become ever more important to Harley-Davidson as it looks to raise brand and product awareness in order to boost U.S. retail sales.
Harley-Davidson is raising its overall marketing investment by 65 percent this year over 2015 levels. Allocating additional funds to do more and bigger events is a key part of the investment.
As such, those flocking to the Daytona Beach area for the wide range of Bike Week activities will notice Harley-Davidson has boosted its visibility on the grounds of the recently remodeled Daytona International Speedway, the epicenter of activity for the event.
Harley-Davidson kicked into high gear with an expanded slate of parties, free demonstrations and a powerful lineup of Cruiser motorcycles.
“Our aim this year is to really wow consumers,” Walters said. “We want them to see, feel and hear us wherever they are in the Daytona area. We really want them to know something big is happening at Harley-Davidson.”
The vast majority of riders who have brought their bikes to Daytona have arrived on Harley-Davidson motorcycles, as is the case with most motorcycle rallies held across the country, Walters says.
“But we want to excite all motorcycle enthusiasts, whether or not they are on a Harley, and those who are new to the sport, as well,” Walters said.
Harley-Davidson’s expanded footprint at the Daytona International Speedway offers motorcycle demo rides and a selection of new Harley-Davidson MotorClothes for purchase, including Willie G. and H.O.G. Commemorative Merchandise.
Harley-Davidson motorcycles from the popular Sons of Anarchy television series and The Avengers movies are also on display.
“We have a number of experiential displays where people can interact with our products, whether it’s by taking one of a 100 new 2016 bikes out on the road or taking part in a JumpStart simulated riding experience,” Walters said.
Bike Week activities in and around Daytona Beach have included a Main Street Party, a new Muscular Dystrophy Association Women’s Ride, a pair of H.O.G. Rally Rendezvous events and a new Editor’s Choice Harley-Davidson Bike Show.
Several local Harley-Davidson dealers are also hosting activities at their dealerships where riders can visit vendor booths from all over the industry and customize their bikes with the latest Harley-Davidson parts and accessories.
Fully aware competitors are taking pages out of Harley-Davidson’s marketing playbook when it comes to events like Daytona Bike Week, the company is committed to finding more and better ways to connect with consumers.

New Jersey biker Mike Mularz is searching for his 22-year-old blue and gold macaw, Spyke. The bird was stolen from Mularz’s bike when he attended Daytona Bike Week and he is offering a $1,000 reward for her return.
A New Jersey man is searching for his parrot after the longtime pet was stolen during a motorcycle event in Florida.
Mike Mularz is offering a $1,000 reward for anyone able to return his 22-year-old blue and gold macaw named Spyke. Mularz said the bird was taken from his motorcycle during Daytona Bike Week on Saturday night, according to witness reports.
“She was forced off the motorcycle and the person ran off into the crowd,” he told WOFL. “Some motorcycle enthusiast saw it happened and tried to chase him down, but could not.”
Mularz raised Spyke from an egg and painted his motorcycle to resemble his beloved macaw, who enjoyed accompanying her owner on rides.
“She really enjoyed being in the wind and riding something,” he said. “Some motorcycle enthusiast saw it happened and tried to chase him down, but could not.”
Mularz said Spyke was unable to fly and likely would have put up a fight as she was being taken. He hopes that her micro chip and the band placed on her leg will assist in bringing her home.
“She has made so many friends, she has more friends than I’ll ever have. And, I really miss her!” Mularz said.
