European Commissioner Bienkowska: ‘The car industry can no longer bend the rules’
European Commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska says that she will no longer accept the present attitude of the car industry and the way consumers are being misled.
She gave a speech at an event organized by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) in Brussels, where she was very clear on the role of the industry in the emissions scandal.
Elzbieta Bienkowska criticized the car industry for selling cars that consume up to 40% more fuel than indicated, with emission control that is switched off if the temperature drops below 17 degrees Celsius. The denial of the present crisis will lead to serious damage to the car sector as well.
The car industry should start planning for the future. There is a shift in consumer preferences to new developments like car-sharing schemes and ride-hailing apps. There is also the climate change. There is the change of the cars themselves to automated and autonomous driving, connected cars and alternative power trains. And there is a shift from mature to emerging markets with new competitors.
Ms. Bienkowska told the industry that adapting is the answer to the present situation and the challenges we are confronted with. The European industry has advantages that should be used. The car industry has to move to zero emission vehicles, without sacrificing technology neutrality and without sacrificing profits or growth.
Elzbieta Bienkowska explained that “the current work on emissions is an opportunity to make a radical overhaul that will put the European industry ahead of their competitors”. But they will have to do that themselves, the European Commission will not do it for them. By planning and acting ahead, the European car industry can lead the world on decarbonisation and autonomous and connected driving, according to the commissioner.
General Secretary Dolf Willigers comments: “I am very happy with this speech. The message of Ms. Elzbieta Bienkowska not only applies to the car industry. The motorcycle industry may not have seen scandals like the Volkswagen emission fraud, but just like the car industry it ignores the need for change. Consumers are just badly or even incorrectly informed when they want to buy a motorcycle.
Motorcycles need to be cleaner and need to use less fuel quickly if riders and motorcycle manufacturers want to successfully claim a position for the motorcycle and other powered two-wheelers in future mobility, especially in urban mobility. The motorcycle industry needs to change gears just as well as the car industry”.
Commissioner Elzbieta Bienkowska is responsible for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises. She has been a commissioner since 2014.

PIRELLI RIDERS RETURNS– to the Legendary Southwick Pro Motocross National
The seventh round of the 2016 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship will make its return to The Wick 338 this Saturday, July 9 for the first time since 2013. An iconic facility that first began hosting the world’s top racers back in 1972, features an extremely unique track design that is formed of a sandy soil, making it one of the most storied topics of the season.

The No.10 of Justin Brayton is one of the fittest racers in the 40-rider field, which will play an important factor in lasting the entire 30-minute plus two laps that he will be required to withstand on one of the sports roughest tracks. He will be focused on placing himself back inside of the 450MX Class top-10.

FEMA’S MESSAGE TO CITY AUTHORITIES– motorcycles are the answer!– We are riders.
Therefore, we know how convenient a motorcycle is in urban traffic. I cannot repeat it enough: motorcycles are smaller, lighter, more agile than cars and therefore use less fuel, use less space, pollute less and cause less congestion.
Where car drivers have to suffer from traffic jams, motorcyclists can keep moving and once on their destination they have no or less trouble to park their bike. Recently many roads and a tunnel to the Brussels European Quarter were – as usual – closed off for a meeting of the EU Counsel. Car drivers reported a delay of one hour to get into town. My delay, even with my big clumsy touring bike, was just 10 minutes.
In 2014 FEMA performed its Mobility Test in several European cities. The outcome was clear: in all situations the motorcycle was faster than cars, public transport and bicycles. You can read the report here. We all know this and riders in all countries keep telling this to the authorities: motorcycles are faster, use less, pollute less and use less parking space. (Lane splitting is allowed in many European countries.)
We do this in all possible ways: we write them letters, go visiting them, we go on the streets, sometimes even with thousands of riders together like we did in Paris earlier this year. You would imagine that the message would be delivered and the authorities would understand it by now. But do they?
Sometimes it even looks like some battle against motorcycles has started. Recently several FEMA associated national organizations reported limitations on motorcycling from local authorities. In Paris older motorcycles are banned during week days from 8:00 to 20:00 and in a few years even newer motorcycles (all before 2016) will be banned on reasons of pollution. Other French cities have announced plans to do the same.
In London they have invented something that is called ULEZ, what stands for Ultra Low Emission Zone. The city council of London plans to have riders of pre-Euro 3 motorcycles (ì.e. they were built before 1st July 2007) pay 12.5 pounds when they enter the ULEZ.
Which by the way will be extended to the area between the North and South Circular roads, the so-called Greater London area. In Stockholm and other Swedish cities mandatory paid motorcycle parking is introduced, with fees that can be as much for mopeds as for cars.
It looks like some cities in the Netherlands are following this example. Several cities in the Netherlands have introduced paid parking for motorcycles, in one town even only on a few dedicated paid parking areas motorcycle parking is allowed. More cities have plans to introduce paid parking for motorcycles.
In Amsterdam mopeds built before 1st January 2011 will be banned from 1st January 2018. Owners of a four-stroke engine moped built after 1st January 2008 can get an exclusion from this. In Norway paid parking for motorcycles is already normal. In Italy more and more city centers are closed for motorcycles, especially those with two-stroke engines. Honesty compels me to mention that other cities still make exemptions for motorcycles: No restrictions for motorcycles (yet) in the German and Dutch low emission zones, no congestion charges in Oslo, Stockholm and Göteborg.
In most European cities you can still park your motorbike free of charges. Still, the growing amount of measures to toll or ban motorcycles of inner cities is disturbing. Of course, city councils have to meet demands to have cleaner air. But the solution here is not to ban motorcycles, not even to ban old motorcycles.
Motorcycles, even old motorcycles are not the source of the problem, but are part of the solution.
And yes, motorcycles can and should be cleaner, so we have to work on that. To phase out older motorcycles just by forbidding them to enter the city is an easy way to get rid of them, but there is a reason many people still have older bikes. Either they hardly use them, so by banning them you solve nothing. Or they just cannot afford a new bike and by ban or toll their bikes they are the most hurt.
If authorities want to phase out older motorcycles, there are other ways that hurt less. Like a scrap program. That has been done for old cars, so why not for old motorcycles?
To solve your congestion problems by banning or tolling motorcycles, or to pester their owners with parking restrictions, isn’t a smart idea either.
It is easy to understand, that city councils want everybody to use public transport, bicycles or to walk. Public transport is good, but you don’t have that everywhere, even in the cities, and the capacity and the network need to meet the demand. It also often isn’t an achievable solution for commuters from outside the city.
Cycling is healthy and a good way to reach your destination. Personally I’m a great fan of cycling, but this is not always an achievable solution too. Motorcycles, powered two-wheelers in general, often can provide in this and therefore are part of the solution to congestion, next to walking, cycling and public transport.
Instead of making the use of motorcycles more difficult and expensive the city authorities should facilitate the use of motorcycles: let them use the bus lanes, this is also a way to enhance road safety. Let motorcycles take position in front of the line at traffic lights, like often is done now with bicycles.
Create free parking spaces. Everybody who has ever been to a city like Rome knows how many motorcycles can be parked in a relatively small area. Exempt motorcycles from congestion toll. Create an infrastructure for charging electric motorcycles and scooters. Facilitate sharing systems for small (electric) motorcycles.
And when you still do not want motorcycles in your city there are better ways to discourage them than bans, tolls and parking fees. Create park & ride facilities for motorcycles, with lockers and a secure parking space. I wouldn’t mind much to switch from motorcycle to public transport at the border of Brussels, it is not a hobby for me to grapple with wet cobblestones, potholes and overcrowded roads, but now it’s just not possible.
Smarter ways of public transport are good too. City authorities: use your imagination to solve your problems, but do not pester motorcyclists who come into your city to work, to study, to visit family and friends or to spent their money in your shops and restaurants.

AMERICA’S NEW STATE RELIGION—California is in the grip of “an incipient state religion,” said Joel Kotkin (Orange County Register). The religion is liberal secularism, and it’s no less intolerant and dogmatic than the state religions of Saudi Arabia, Iran, or the former Soviet Union. California’s legislature has introduced a bill that would forbid religious universities and schools from discriminating against students, faculty, or administrators based on sexual orientation or gender identity—making it illegal for conservative Christian school, for example, to turn away students or teachers who do not share its stated religious beliefs.
Another, “the Orwellian-named ‘California Climate Science Truth and Accountability Act of 2016,’” would enable the state to prosecute any individual or company that has challenged the orthodoxy of climate change.
These proposed laws “reflect a highly authoritarian and illiberal brand of progressivism” that now insists there is only one correct—and legal—view on controversial issues. Holy shit!

FEMA INTERVIEW– Marchel Bulthuis: ‘The future of motorcycling is electric’
More and more motorcycle manufacturers are building bikes that use ‘alternative fuels’ and electric motorcycles could be the future if we want to keep riding without using fossil fuels and without polluting our environment.
To find out more about electric motorcycles, FEMA talked to Marchel Bulthuis, a Dutch importer of a number of different brands of electric motorcycles.
Why would I want to buy an electric motorcycle?
Marchel’s answer is very clear: “Well, it’s fun to be honest! A lot of torque, instant torque is always available, they are just fun to ride.”
That’s it? Just fun?
Marchel gets exited: “The future is electric! No doubt about it. We are at the brink of a lot of new developments in electric riding. We definitely need electric vehicles out of environmental awareness. But there is no law that says you can’t have fun and that’s why we will see a lot more electric bikes very soon.”
Is an electric motorcycle practical in daily use? And how about the range?
“Yes, it’s very practical in daily use, you can use your electric bike every day. The big benefit is of course that you always start with a fully charged battery.” Marchel continues: “I get a lot of questions about the range of electric bikes, but I think range is overrated. The range of an Energica Ego for example, is 200 kilometres in eco modus, but I can do 1,000 kilometres if I want to.
You need to think differently; when you’re riding, you are going to get a coffee or lunch, or anything. At that moment you will charge the battery, using the public infrastructure or fast charging along the highway. If you do it like that, you don’t have to worry about the range.”
How about the cost of riding an electric motorcycle for commuting, riding to work?
“The initial cost of an electric motorcycle is a bit higher than the cost of a ‘common’ motorcycle. The differences start after you purchased the bike. If I charge an Energica Ego at home for example, it costs me about €2 to €2,50 to fully charge it, and I can then ride it for more than 200 kilometres (125 miles). And that is just about the charging costs.
If you look at maintenance, it’s not very expensive either. The bike has hardly any moving parts, because it doesn’t have an internal combustion engine. It’s a lot less complicated and practically maintenance free. That’s why it’s cheaper to own one than a ‘normal’ bike.”
Are politicians doing enough to promote zero emission vehicles?
“Governments and businesses need to invest more in the infrastructure for electric vehicles,” says Marchel. “If you can charge anywhere, also at work, you can travel anywhere you want. But we need more public charging locations, at shops, at restaurants, et cetera. In the past we built petrol stations, now we need to build charging stations for electric vehicles.”
Marchel is very clear: “My message to politicians would be: think about incentives for the consumer. There are a lot of incentives in places for businesses, but the consumer needs to benefit as well. Do something to make it easier for people to adopt electric riding and make it financially attractive. Lower the VAT on vehicles for example.”
Finally, what is your message to motorcyclists?

LAS VEGAS MOTORCYCLE HALL OF FAME CREATED– Las Vegas BikeFest in partnership with Branscombe Richmond, famous actor, band leader and a force in the motorcycle world announce the formation of the Las Vegas Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
“The Hall of Fame will honor iconic ambassadors and influential heroes who put their interest above and beyond for the motorcycle community, and touched Las Vegas in a unique way. Our aim is to celebrate, illuminate and preserve the rich tradition of motorcycling in America”, commented Mindi Cherry, Producer of Las Vegas BikeFest and Branscombe Richmond curator of the Hall of Fame.
“These motorcycle riders have given us their generous contributions of technology, vision, excitement and commitment.” Cherry proclaimed. We are especially proud of the inaugural inductees.”
The 2016 Las Vegas Motorcycle Hall of Fame Inductees are:
Keith Ball – In 1971, Ball was hired as manager of a new national motorcycle legislative organization, ABATE. After a few months, he was named associate editor of a new national motorcycle magazine, Easyriders, where he worked until 1981. Over the next few years he built ABATE into the largest national motorcycle legislative association, with 28 state chapters and some 30,000 members, and became its national director.
In 1987, Keith returned to Paisano, and served as editor of what was now their largest magazine, Easyriders, and the editorial director of 14 other titles and remained there until 1999.
In 1996 Keith launched Bikernet.com, one of the first Harley-Davidson motorcycle sites that since expanded to include Bikernet Trikes and Bikernet Baggers and reaches over 100,000 unique users each month. When he is not trying to set land speed records at Bonneville, Keith spends his free time writing books and building motorcycles. Keith continues to serve as an advisory council member for Las Vegas BikeFest.
Lorenzo Lamas – American actor, known for playing Lance Cumson on the 1980s soap opera Falcon Crest, Reno Raines on the 1990s crime drama Renegade, and Hector Ramirez on the daytime soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful.

Evel Knievel – his first jump was in 1966 at the National Date Festival in Indio, California. From that point on, Knievel’s stunts became more ambitious and more dangerous. Some of his most memorable jumps include Caesars Palace (1967), Madison Square Garden (1971), Twin Falls, Idaho, Snake River Canyon(1975), and of course the famous Wembley Stadium jump (1975).
While in Las Vegas, Knievel first saw the fountains at Caesars Palace and decided to jump them. When he hit the takeoff ramp, it was perfect, the landing however is now the most famous motorcycle crash in history. Knievel came up short, causing the handlebars to rip out of his hands as he tumbled over them onto the pavement where he skidded into the Dunes parking lot. After his crash and recovery Knievel was more famous than ever. ABC-TV showed the jump over and over.
Robbie Knievel – son of the late famous stuntman Evel Knievel, Robbie began jumping his bicycle at age 4 and rode motorcycles at age 7.
Robbie has completed over 350 jumps, setting 20 world records. Some of his most memorable and televised jumps Include paying homage to his father, by jumping the Caesars Palace fountains. The jump took place 22 years after Evel Knievel failed to clear the fountains in 1967. Robbie landed safely and became the first to successfully jump the fountains in 1989. Following the jump, Robbie stated “that was for you, Dad”.
In 1998 Robbie attempted a record-breaking jump of 231 feet over 30 limousines at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. Robbie jumped the 130-foot gap between the two 13-story Jockey Club Towers in Las Vegas in 1999 and intentionally crashed his motorcycle into hay bales to avoid falling off the second tower.
A ceremony to honor the inductees will be held on Saturday, October 1 at 8:30pm at the 16th Annual Las Vegas BikeFest held in Downtown Las Vegas – Fremont East.
Las Vegas BikeFest 2016 will be held September 29 – October 2, 2016 in the heart of downtown Las Vegas on Fremont Street East.

THIS JUST IN FROM THE SONS OF ARTHRITIS HEADQUARTERS–
I wanted to drop a line about my experience over the 4th of July weekend.
My wife and I were in the Black Hills of South Dakota on Sunday and I decided, mainly since our first stop was Sturgis Harley-Davidson, to wear my performance fabric Sons of Arthritis crossed pistons Ibuprofen Chapter t-shirt.
About noon we arrived at Mt Rushmore and we had made it about 25 yards past the first entrance arch and a gentleman passed me, turned and said “I like your shirt, I feel ya.”
We thought that was pretty cool and continued to walk. Just outside the final arch before the viewing plaza, another gentleman passed me, turned and commented, “I love your shirt and know where you are coming from.”
We giggled that two guys commented and we had been there less than 5 minutes. We viewed the monument and decided to go on the trail that goes right under the sculpture and halfway through there was a retired Air Force veteran with his family that commented how much he liked the shirt and knows the pain.
This one was fun as I too am a retired Air Force vet with service connected issues with my hip and back and am currently on a daily Ibuprofen prescription as I work toward a hip replacement. We visited for a bit.
Finally, later in the day we were walking along the street in Keystone, SD and a lady came up from behind me, tapped me on the shoulder and said “I like your shirt, did you get it out here?”
I told her “no, I ordered it at “sonsofarthritis.com“.
On Monday, the 4th while we were driving home my wife and I were laughing about how many people had commented on my shirt and she said she heard others that didn’t talk to us directly but were commenting to those around them about the shirt.
We had so much fun on the trip this past weekend but Sunday stands out a little extra with all the people that commented on the shirt and knowing the pain. Now I just have to decide what other items I am going to order!

EARL THE GREAT RETURNS FROM THE DEAD— His heart stopped in Canton, Ohio five minutes from a hospital where the cardiac specialist rides an old Triumph. “You didn’t have a heart attack,” the doctor said. “Your heart just stopped.”

UNCLE MONKEY ON TIME– Time catches up with us eventually. For my friend that day has been a longtime coming.
A turn in the military, bikes and hotrods and living a good life have taken their toll on him. He doesn’t get around as good as he use to, but he still makes it out the garage even if it only to sit at the bench and admire the toys a lifetime of hard work afforded him.
His kids check in every so often but more just to see if their “lottery has come in.” They threaten to put him in a senior’s complex and sell away the house that raised their family. It is something I hear from many of my older friends. Calls are more to see if the liquidators can sell away their past.
Their voices drip with resentment that the old man hasn’t passed along, that they can’t sell the machines that occupied so much of their father’s time. They forget about the summer vacation in the old street rod to a rod run across the country. They forget about the Sunday drives out to the lake.
They forget about the jealous smiles of kids lining the streets on a toy run. They forget the times when it was bad and dad would roll out on his chopper only to come back a short time later with his head on straight and tell them that it was alright.
They forgot about rolling up tight sleeves to get a glimpse of a menacing dragon or winking sailor girl etched into dark tanned arms.
They are conditioned to the new world; a world where they can isolate themselves into their phones laughing at cat videos. They wrap themselves up in steel cages that promise to stop for them so they don’t have to pay attention. To them everything is disposable, even their childhood.
They don’t see a cherry 32 Ford or a seventies survivor chopper. It is all old junk to them. Another call, another call to sell. They’ve already spent the money and now the old man keeps clinging to his youth leaving them high and dry.
My old friend sits at the bench steeping his tea. He talks about the time the kids scratched their names into the rear fender on the Softail, still there all these years later. The hints that two of the three were conceived in the back seat of the ’48 at the old drive-in before they built the new one.
He talks fondly of the Panhead he sold to Billy when times got tight, the one he bought back when the tables were turned. A life time of memories in cold steel and oil. I help him slip behind the wheel of the ‘32 and guide him down the drive. A 22-year-old kid is behind the wheel, Hair still short from his time on the other side of the world, anxious that Martha will let him hold her hand.

INTERESTING TIMES—What do you say? Life is nuts and then you die. Do you think it’s all due to over-population? Do you think I should just ignore the issues, drink whiskey and ride into the sunset?
Obama wants us to believe we’ve created climate change, then he proudly announced about saving the auto industry, and they’re selling more cars than ever. Does that make sense? There are places in LA you can’t get to in a car at particular time, and if you did survive, there’s no place to park. So, why aren’t the number of cars regulated?
Tomorrow government entities will demand we drive zero-omission vehicles or electric vehicles. Then what? About the time we regulate our vehicles to death they’ll discover vehicles aren’t the problem, concrete is more harmful, and we need to grow more trees. I just wish they would stop, step back and consider Freedom first.
It’s tough when someone says we need to live in tents and ride bicycles to save the planet… What the hell can you say? Regarding vehicles: We don’t need to ban anything, just give more folks the chance to work out of their homes. It’s good for the kids, the home, the mind, finances, stress levels, and the planet. Amazing, right.
