SEAT OF PANTS BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for August 18, 2016

Hey,
Had an interesting experience dodging thunderstorms through Monument Valley, on our way to Sturgis. We pulled into Rawlings for gas and my riding partner was constantly looking for the best possible route. He would ask folks on the street, gas station attendants, waitresses, and for info on his cell phone. They all offered up different road remedies.

Life is like that. It’s nut but, it is up to us to find our most wonderful vantage point, our personal nirvana. So, about the time you feel all of humanity bit the dust take a look at a bike Roland Sands built, a painting by David Uhl, that knockout girl on the stage at the Buffalo chip, or a new product created by the Klockwerks team. Life is amazing.

Let’s hit the most amazing news on the motorcycle wheel planet. Our news is sponsored in part by Las Vegas Bike Fest, Cycle Source Magazine, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation, Iron Trader, and the maniacs at Choppertown.

Surround yourself with great people. Push yourself to achieve your goals. Don’t be afraid to be unique.

Our vision of an American Sport Cruiser inspired by the legendary FXR. We designed & built our first Brawler GT in 2009 with encouragement from Cycle Source Magazine Roadside Marty and Bandit’s Bikernet.

These fine fellas had the vision of what was to come years ahead of what is currently en vogue. Needless to say, they each wanted us to build the style of bike seen in today’s FXR & Dyna performance club style bikes. They were on point. We have always been different.

Our Brawler GT was first featured on the cover of Ultimate Motorcycling in 2011 and our Brawler GTR was featured in Hot Bike Magazine.

The Last Ride & Supper: Iceland

I knew the last day would be long and in some ways not as interesting. Pan was hoping we could find remote interior areas to explore, ride and shoot more footage. But the eastern part of Iceland, before you get closer to the coast, is wide, expansive, and desert-like.

NEWS FROM THE WEEK MAGAZINE—Jeni Stepien’s father was murdered a decade ago, but his heart was with her when she got married last week. The Pennsylvania school teacher was walked down the aisle by Arthur Thomas, 72, who received her dad’s donated heart in 2006. The two kept in touch over the years, and after Stepien got engaged last fall, she asked Thomas if he’d give her away.

He accepted, and when they finally met in person, the day before the ceremony, Thomas suggested she grip his wrist and feel his pulse.  “I thought that would be the best way for her to feel close to her dad,” he said. “That’s her father’s heart beating.”

QUICK, OPEN THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY–Three mischievous old Grandmas were sitting on a bench outside the nursing home when an old Grandpa walked by. One of the old Grandmas yelled out, ‘Hey, we bet we can tell exactly how old you are!’

The old man said, ‘There is no way you can guess my age!

One of the Grandmas said, ‘Sure we can! Just drop your pants and undershorts and we can tell your exact age.’ Embarrassed, but anxious to prove they couldn’t do it, he dropped his drawers.

The Grandmas asked him to first turn around a couple of times and then jump up and down several times. Determined to prove them wrong, he did it. Then they all said in unison, ‘You’re 87 years old!’

Standing with his pants down around his ankles, the old gent asked, ‘How in the world did you guess my age?’

Slapping their knees, high fiving and grinning from ear to ear, the three old ladies happily crowed. ‘We were at your birthday party yesterday.’

NEWS FROM THE CROFT LEATHER FACTORY–
I had a great time in the Badlands and very grateful to have been invited to setup at the Peoria Grand Nationals by Carl Pusser of Walkin Tall Cycles last weekend.

Along with all the awesome bikes Carl brought, Cabana Dan brought his beautiful custom hardtail with a 500cc Buell, and Jon Shipley of Hooser Daddy Choppers brought a magnificent bobber that spared no expense.

Cabana Dan is a Hamster and he updated me on the history of the Hamsters, really cool! He also updated me on a vintage triple Harley Davidson Hummer engine salt flat racer he is building.

We all had a lot of great conversations about the industry and I learn more everytime I get around talented builders and I look forward to creating leather seats for all these kustom builders in the future.

The crowd was electric and loved seeing more kustom handmade motorcycles and parts. Good People, Good Music and Goodtimes is what the Grand Nationals always deliver.

$100 of this week on all instock Hand FN made leather chopper seats. All of these can be purchase through Croft Leather’s Etsy store. I will have a steady flow of Hand FN made leather chopper seats, leather cuffs and kustom leather creations available for purchase.

SGP TITLE RACE RESUMES IN MALILLA
The race for FIM Speedway Grand Prix glory resumes as triple world champion Greg Hancock bids to defend top spot at the Swedish SGP in Malilla on Saturday.

The Californian heads to the G&B Arena with a three-point advantage over nearest rival Tai Woffinden as the competition returns following the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup break.

Hancock leads the way on 66 points, but he’s still waiting for his first SGP win of 2016. Malilla would be the perfect time to achieve it for a man who bases himself in Sweden during the European season, but has yet to win in his adopted homeland in 35 attempts.
“Any round in Sweden is like a home round for me, so I want to finally get that win and do it in my adopted home country!”

– Greg Hancock

Woffinden triumphed in the 2014 Swedish SGP at the G&B Arena and this year’s LOTTO Warsaw SGP winner could take the World Championship lead if he repeats that performance this weekend.

Both men face huge competition from a tight chasing pack, with Mitas Czech SGP winner Jason Doyle third on 54, Adrian Flux British SGP victor Antonio Lindback fourth on 53 and Kjærgaard Danish SGP champion Maciej Janowski chasing in fifth on 52.
Sixth-placed Bartosz Zmarzlik (51) and Chris Holder in seventh (50) are also firmly in medal contention going into the second half of the season.

Hancock knows ending his wait for a Swedish success would boost his chances of adding a fourth FIM Speedway World Championship to his storied CV.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to getting back into the SGP season now. It feels like we really get into it around this time. We’re halfway through and the races come thick and fast from now on, so it’s cool.

“I like Malilla. It’s a great race track. The weather always plays a big part in the track conditions there, but as a team we always seem to be able to find something that works for us so we want to carry that on.

“Any round in Sweden is like a home round for me, so I want to finally get that win and do it in my adopted home country!”

With Woffinden’s Polish club Wroclaw and Swedish team Vetlanda facing the prospect of missing out on their respective title play-offs, the GB skipper has completed a blockbuster return to British Elite League club Wolverhampton to keep himself sharp for the SGP title run-in.

Despite Hancock having the edge and a host of rivals closing in, the Scunthorpe-born man insists he’s only worried about his performances as he seeks to defend the world title.

He said: “I’m still not looking too much at the standings. I just want to go there and do my job. It’s all about going to work and getting it done.

“I have to concentrate on myself, my work and giving it my very best. I then have to hope my best is good enough to come out on top at the end of the season. I’m looking forward to Malilla, it’s a fast track and hopefully we will come away with another good score.”

There’s no shortage of Swedish interest this weekend with the country’s entire Monster Energy SWC bronze medal-winning side Lindback, Andreas Jonsson, Fredrik Lindgren and Peter Ljung putting national team loyalties aside to race for individual success.
Lindback has enjoyed a sensational season, with his Adrian Flux British SGP triumph in Cardiff on July 9 putting him firmly in the hunt for his first ever World Championship medal.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS: 1 Greg Hancock 66, 2 Tai Woffinden 63, 3 Jason Doyle 54, 4 Antonio Lindback 53, 5 Maciej Janowski 52, 6 Bartosz Zmarzlik 51, 7 Chris Holder 50, 8 Matej Zagar 39, 9 Peter Kildemand 38, 10 Nicki Pedersen 37, 11 Andreas Jonsson 37, 12 Piotr Pawlicki 37, 13 Fredrik Lindgren 34, 14 Niels-Kristian Iversen 33, 15 Chris Harris 21, 16 Patryk Dudek 8, 17 Danny King 7, 18 Anders Thomsen 5, 19 Vaclav Milik 3, 20 Denis Stojs 1, 21 Nick Skorja 1.
SWEDISH SGP LINE-UP (in ranking order with rider numbers): 108 Tai Woffinden (Great Britain), 45 Greg Hancock (USA), 3 Nicki Pedersen (Denmark), 88 Niels-Kristian Iversen (Denmark), 69 Jason Doyle (Australia), 55 Matej Zagar (Slovenia), 71 Maciej Janowski (Poland), 23 Chris Holder (Australia), 25 Peter Kildemand (Denmark), 100 Andreas Jonsson (Sweden), 37 Chris Harris (Great Britain), 66 Fredrik Lindgren (Sweden – substitute for 33 Jaroslaw Hampel), 95 Bartosz Zmarzlik (Poland), 777 Piotr Pawlicki (Poland), 85 Antonio Lindback (Sweden), 16 Peter Ljung (Sweden – wild card), 17 Jacob Thorssell (Sweden – track reserve), 18 Kim Nilsson (Sweden – track reserve).

PIRELLI BRING US MOTOCROSS REPORTS–
Benny Bloss and Justin Barcia Lead Pirelli Racers at Famed Unadilla National
New Berlin, New York (August 14, 2016) – The legendary Unadilla Motocross Park in upstate New York was the site for the 10th round of the 2016 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship. An iconic venue that has been a staple on the pro circuit for more than four decades, Unadilla presents racers with rocks, hills, deep ruts and overall challenging conditions.

Pirelli racers selected the SCORPION MX32 front tire with many teams starting the day on an MX32 MUD application before switching to the standard MX32 or MX32 PRO for racing.

The weekend started off with a devastating fire inside the BTO Sports/WPS/KTM hauler that resulted in significant damage to bikes, parts and gear. Fortunately nobody was injured. In a true testament to the close-knit motocross community, all of the KTM teams banded together and were able to piece together three bikes for racers Andrew Short, Justin Brayton and Benny Bloss so they could compete on Saturday.

Last year, Unadilla marked Bloss’ pro debut and the confidence of having raced on this track before shown through as the rookie was the top finishing Pirelli racer, collecting a career best fourth overall (7-4) while narrowly missing the podium in Moto 2. Tying Bloss on points (32) was New York native and Auto Trader/Monster Energy/Yamaha’s Justin Barcia. Barcia qualified in second place and finished just off of the podium in Moto 1. His 4-7 moto scores earned him fifth overall.

Barcia’s JGRMX teammate Weston Peick has been riding well and carried that momentum to New York where he used two top-10 starts and consistent laps to finish seventh overall (5-9). The third member of the JGRMX team and another New York native was Phil Nicoletti. Like his teammates, Nicoletti started at the sharp end of the field and used this to his advantage as he secured two eighth place rides en route to ninth overall on the day.

Good starts were a consistent theme for Pirelli racers and the two other BTO Sports racers, Justin Brayton and Andrew Short, both held up their end of the deal. Brayton led the duo in the overall standings via his 10-11 moto finishes for 11th overall. Short was battling well inside the top 10 in Moto 1 before experiencing some mechanical issues but he would bounce back in Moto 2 and finish 16th overall with 38-13 moto scores.

The penultimate round of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship takes place next Saturday, August 20 at Budds Creek Raceway in Mechanicsville, Maryland.

BAD ATTORNEY GENERAL REPORT–Pennsylvania AG Kathleen Kane found guilty in perjury case–NORRISTOWN, Pa. –
The state’s attorney general was convicted Monday of all nine counts in a perjury and obstruction case related to a grand jury leak.

Attorney General Kathleen Kane showed little emotion as jurors announced their verdict late Monday. The jurors agreed the first-term Democrat leaked information about a 2009 grand jury probe to embarrass a rival prosecutor.

Earlier, a lawyer for Kane in closing arguments blamed her former top aides for the leak of grand jury material, which found its way to a newspaper. Kane wanted the public to know her predecessor had failed to prosecute a case involving an NAACP official, but she never authorized the leak of secret criminal files, said her lawyer, Seth Farber.
Instead, he said, Kane’s chief deputy, Adrian King, abused his power when he sent the files to a reporter through Kane’s political consultant. King and the consultant, Josh Morrow, testified against Kane last week.

Morrow, who had a grant of immunity, said he and Kane devised a cover-up story that framed King for the leak.

He acknowledged telling the lie to a grand jury, “Those are two witnesses who will say whatever they need to in order to protect themselves,” Farber said. “You would not even buy a used car from either one of them.”

Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele noted, though, that Kane had chosen the men as confidants. Text messages and phone records show frequent interactions among them on key days in the prosecution’s timeline: when the documents changed hands, when the Philadelphia Daily News article appeared and when a grand jury started to investigate the leak.

A top deputy told the jury he was alarmed when he saw the June 2014 article. He testified Kane told him it was no big deal.

“Who would say that other than the person that is responsible for it?” Steele asked.
The leak grew out of Kane’s feud with former office prosecutor Frank Fina, he said. According to trial testimony, Kane believed Fina had planted a story that showed she had dropped a statehouse sting.

“She was just hell-bent on getting back at Frank Fina,” Morrow testified last week, describing Kane as “unhinged” at the time.

Kane did not testify or call any defense witnesses after three days of prosecution evidence. The jury began deliberations Monday afternoon.

Kane, 50, was once a rising star in the state’s Democratic party, using her then-husband’s trucking fortune to run for statewide office after stints as a Scranton prosecutor and a stay-at-home mother. But an early honeymoon period in office, when she spoke out for the legalization of gay marriage, was soon marred by turmoil as she sparred with officials inside and outside the office.

She staunchly described the charges as payback for her efforts to take on an “old-boys network” in state government that traded offensive, mildly pornographic emails. Her investigation led two state Supreme Court justices and others to resign.

However, the trial judge did not let her lawyers wade into that argument.
Public officials convicted of official misconduct in Pennsylvania typically don’t have to resign until they are sentenced. Kane could stay in office while she appeals, the governor’s office said.

Perjury, the only felony charged, can bring up to seven years in prison. The misdemeanor charges Kane faced included conspiracy, official oppression and false swearing.

Kane, the first Democrat and first woman elected to the office, lost her law license over the charges and did not seek re-election this year.

WHOREHOUSE SUES LOCAL CHURCH OVER LIGHTNING STRIKE… The Power of Prayer, MT. VERNON, TEXAS,

Diamond D’s brothel began construction on an expansion of their building to increase their ever-growing business.   In response, the local Baptist Church started a campaign to block the business from expanding with morning, afternoon, and evening prayer sessions at their church.

Work on Diamond D’s progressed right up until the week before the grand reopening when lightning struck the whorehouse and burned it to the ground.   After the cat-house was burned to the ground by the lightning strike, the church folks were rather smug in their outlook, bragging about “the power of prayer.”

But late last week ‘Big Jugs’ Jill Diamond, the owner/madam, sued the church, the preacher and the entire congregation on the grounds that the church “was ultimately responsible for the demise of her building and her business — either through direct or indirect divine actions or means.”

In its reply to the court, the church vehemently and voraciously denied any and all responsibility or any connection to the building’s demise.

The crusty old judge read through the plaintiff’s complaint and the defendant’s reply, and at the opening hearing he commented, “I don’t know how the hell I’m going to decide this case, but it appears from the paperwork, that we now have a whorehouse owner who staunchly believes in the power of prayer, and an entire church congregation that thinks it’s all bullshit.”

UNCLE MONKEY REPORT ON THE 2016 STURGIS RALLY–With nothing left but to clean up and balance the books 2016 Sturgis Bike Rally is over. The forecasts of a small rally because of the hangover effect of the 75th anniversary were correct. Many of the locals have taken to calling this year’s rally the Ghost Rally and with good reason.

Early indications are that this year’s attendance will be the lowest since 2000. For their part organizers pulled out the stops offering big name concerts from people like Willie Nelson, Kid Rock, Miranda Lambert, Loverboy, In This Moment, and Black Label Society. For most riders days were spent dodging rain clouds and galvanizing themselves for another night of rainy concerts.

Lines were short and venders were doing their best to separate people from their money with great food, cold beer, and good quality products. The shift towards the polo shirt crowd is still moving forward as most people gravitated towards the massive displays from Harley, Indian, Victory, Yamaha, and for the first time Ducati.

The draw not so much to sell someone a new bike but to buy a complimentary bike – a canyon carver to go with the bagger, a bar hopper for Saturday nights. Most of the dealers were selling the second or third bike for the garage.

That’s not to say the old school hell raisers didn’t show up but the overwhelming number of attendees were newcomers with their tell tale helmets and inability to operate a four way stop. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I waited ten minutes for the first bike to cross the intersection. Apparently 4-way-stop means letting the cross traffic go 4 times before they would cross.

So does this mean Sturgis has crested the hill, now on the slippery decline into oblivion? Hardly.

Mix in a bad economy and an election year steam rolling to a revolution and many people just decided to stay away. Next year there will be more and more after that as we head towards 80 years. While it is something many of the venders are looking towards many of them were whispering the words of the 100th less than 24 years away.

Some are hopeful they will still be there, others were hinting about passing the torch to a new generation in the upcoming years.

RAY WHEELER’S MORE THAN CROSS COUNTRY RIDE ON AN ’89 SOFTAIL–The journey back to life for one fine 1989 FXST/S. It had been sitting for around 10 years.

This clean ’89 FXST/S was delivered to me last April, a year ago, April 2015. The first thing I tackled was the front and rear wheels. Installed new bearings and races just before taking them to the tire shop for some new rubber (Metzler; front, 100/90-21″, rear 140/70-16″).

During that lull in waiting for the new rubber, I removed the springer fork and replaced the neck bearings. Then I moved to the primary drive.

While the wheels were at the tire shop, I tore into the primary drive and removed all oil lines and oil tank for a cleaning. The primary chain and adjusting shoe was the
first thing to go.

I discovered the clutch hub had a broken bolt, so I removed it. And while Ray C. Wheeler was visiting we found that the clutch hub was cracked through to the key way. After discussing the problem, we decided to find a late model 5-speed with the roller detent shifter mechanism.

For the price of a new clutch hub and mainshaft, Ray C found a complete transmission gearset with all the shifter pieces, complete minus the case.

So in goes a fairly new trans and late model shift assembly, 2003 Bagger trans from of all places just across the state from him near Miami. He also found a 1998 and later clutch basket assembly that a long time friend had in Kansas. So, all of those pieces were on their way to me via UPS all in the same week.

During the wait, Ray C had me install the 61 tooth rear pulley he had used on his twin-cam Dyna, along with a new and shorter belt from BDL belt drives, to up the gearing a bit, for the long haul.

After getting the bike all back together and then on the first test ride, I realized the straight up-swept fish tails seems way too loud and obnoxious to leave on the bike
for a cross-country trip. So, I talked Ray C into letting me install one of my many sets of FXD, Dyna exhaust, with Screaming Eagle Tapered mufflers. With a little shuffling and fabricating a bracket for the rear header pipe, the engine had that familiar H-D sound.

During all this, Ray C sent the SU carb to Rivera-Primo for a rebuild and air filter assembly, with new down swept intake manifold. Also, installed a new Compu-Fire Elite-1 ignition system and reused the original Crane single fire coil and plug wires.

Along with building a completely new wiring harness that looks like the original using all USA made wire, and shrink wrapped wire terminals for weather protection. Replaced all aftermarket chrome handle bar controls with good quality used OEM black switch housings and front master/cyclinder. All the wires were removed from the switches and new wires soldered to the quality H-D switches.

I performed all of this in house in my humble back yard garage.

I also upgraded front and rear turn signals to dual element sockets with bulbs. Now, there is running lights when lights are on, with turn signals when needed.

Also, added a power out-let attached below coil to the coil cover bracket, to power up phone and other electronic accessories. There are photos if you need them.

And after all the reports that I received back from Ray C, all’s well that ends well.

    –D.R. Willie

We will bring you more reports on this rebuild, but Ray put 5,080 miles on the Softail running from the Port of Los Angeles to Spokane, and then to Sturgis, Missouri and finally Sarasota, Florida. Evos rule.

OBAMA DECREE Targets Gunsmiths and Online Firearm Information–
When Obama vowed to use his “pen and phone” to circumvent Congress and impose his will on America, he was actually telling the truth for once. In the latest example of lawless decrees coming from the executive branch, the Obama administration is taking aim at gunsmiths and free speech.

Basically, if a recent “regulation” disguised as “guidance” is not stopped, gunsmithing — an American tradition stretching back centuries that was crucial in the War for Independence — will be effectively made illegal, experts say.

Another controversial element of the decree would purport to unconstitutionally criminalize many forms of gun-related speech on the Internet. If not withdrawn, the illegal Obama decree would purport to shred the rights protected by the Constitution’s First and Second Amendments by making it illegal to post any “how-to” information about guns online. It would also effectively make all gun-related information on the Internet a crime because it could be accessed by foreigners.

However, as has happened with virtually all of Obama’s power grabs, opposition to the newest illegal edict is surging — this time among Second Amendment activists, gun owners, industry, and proponents of constitutional government. Grassroots organizations have called on the Obama administration to immediately withdraw the “unconstitutional power grab.” If it refuses, critics of the scheme said they would work with Congress to defund it.

The controversial decree came just weeks after the United Nations once again demanded that the U.S. government impose “robust gun control” on Americans. As part of an accelerating trend, the dictator-dominated UN increasingly exploits every possible incident to push unconstitutional attacks on gun rights under the guise of protecting what it misleadingly refers to as “human rights.”

The latest anti-gun Obama regulation also appears to be in line with the illegal UN Arms Trade Treaty. The radical treaty, which has not been ratified by the U.S. Senate despite the administration’s pleas, seeks to ultimately create a monopoly on firearms in the hands of government, dictators, and international organizations such as the UN itself — institutions that have killed hundreds of millions of people just in the last century alone.
The new decree, released on July 22 with little media fanfare and without even following the standard procedures for imposing new regulations, came from the increasingly radical John Kerry-controlled State Department. Specifically, the regulation was issued by the “Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC),” a rogue bureaucracy supposedly charged with enforcing the Arms Export Control Act (AECA) and the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Incredibly, under the new rules, gunsmiths — even people who simply thread a barrel or make a small part for an older firearm, according to experts — will be classified as a weapons “manufacturer” subject to regulation as an exporter of military material. (Apparently the Obama administration’s Fast and Furious efforts to arm Mexican drug cartels are exempt.) That new classification will subject the small-time gunsmiths to onerous federal regulation, in addition to requiring them to register with Kerry’s DDTC and pay thousands of dollars in “fees” for the privilege.

Anyone who does not obey the new decree would be subject to extreme criminal penalties, said analysts who investigated the new regulation. Even minor violations of the complex regulatory maze — designed to prevent the export of advanced military weaponry and technology to terror groups and dictators — could result in criminal prosecution. Countless small gunsmiths will be put out of business, experts said.
Long term, the only way to keep such extremism and tyranny at bay is to create an informed electorate that understands the Constitution, as well as the moral, philosophical, and religious foundations upon which America was founded.

Flathead Power Knucklehead Engine Alive Once More Through S&S

Hi to the S&S team,

Here is my query: I have looked everywhere on the web to find decent information about the horsepower and torque developed by the generator kn74 and 93 motors, because I am going to go for one of these motors, and I’d like to know about it. It is one of the fundamental spec to know about a motor.

I think I saw dyno curves on your website, with three different engines, and it stated something like 60 horsepower for the kn93 ? I find this pretty low for an engine that will supposedly tear your arms off and shake your bike till it crumbles?

Anyway, any information will be very appreciated,

–Antoine
Cran Gevrier, France

That’s a question on an article from 2011? Wow..

Well, our KN93 is 62 HP and 84 TQ, but they are a fairly faithful reproduction of the stock Harley cylinder heads, which restrict airflow and limit high RPM horsepower.
So definitely an upgrade from a stock 74 with 45 HP! If you’re looking for more horsepower, the PH series engines are definitely more powerful with 99 HP and 105TQ in the P103 Series. But, that being said, nothing looks as cool as a Knuckle!

Bonnier Corp. Acquires Sand Sports Super Show–Bonnier Corporation, one of the largest special-interest publishing groups in the country, has acquired the Sand Sports Super Show, the world’s premier sand sports trade show and consumer expo, it was announced today by Matt Hickman, vice president of brand strategies, Bonnier Corp.
The strategic acquisition solidifies Bonnier Corp.’s leadership in the off-road, sand sports and motorsports segments, complementing the company’s repertoire of renowned publications and events geared toward enthusiast audiences.

The Sand Sports Super Show is an annual trade show and consumer expo where thousands of sand sports fans gather in Costa Mesa, Calif., to experience the latest products and industry innovations. Within its community, the event is fundamental in uniting and mobilizing enthusiasts, cultivating growth, and fostering safety awareness.
“Bonnier Corp. specializes in connecting high-value, passionate enthusiast audiences with our partners,” Hickman said. “The addition of the Sand Sports Super Show furthers our market-segment leadership and unlocks unlimited potential for our customer groups: spectators, participants, sponsors and exhibitors.”

This is the latest evolution of Bonnier Corp.’s presence within the off-road, sand sports and motorsports realm. The company acquired Family Events, a leading producer of motorsports-enthusiast events, in October 2014. Management of the Sand Sports Super Show will be folded into the Family Events division.

“When Family Events was acquired by Bonnier Corp., one of our key strategies was to seek out great events to add to our roster of shows,” said Mike Moore, president of Bonnier Corp.’s Family Events division. “The Sand Sports Super Show perfectly aligns with our strategic plan — it’s a great show with terrific partners and sponsors, and we plan to build on its success in the years to come.”

“The Sand Sports Super Show will be in good hands with a knowledgeable steward to nurture continued growth and excitement for the industry,” said Donald Murphy, founder, president and owner of the Sand Sports Super Show. “Family Events has produced exceptional motorsports entertainment for more than 30 years and continues to thrive within Bonnier Corp., so I’m confident that this new venture will propel the show into a future of further success.”

The 18th annual Sand Sports Super Show will be held at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa Sept. 16-18. Sponsors, exhibitors, participants and key stakeholders will remain, and Murphy will work with Family Events on the expo.

The ownership transition of the Sand Sports Super Show is effective immediately. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING QUESTION--My name is Johnny Garofalo and I am interested in learning more about JKD and training at your school.  Though I am now 44 years old, I do have a small amount of experience with JKD because I was privately trained by an instructor when I was a college student in Boston.  Of course, it has been a very long time and I would never consider myself anything but an absolute beginner.
I do have just a couple of fears, however.

In 2009, I fractured two vertebrae in my thoracic spine.  Luckily, I was in very good physical condition when I was injured.  Though it has been a number of years since my injury, I am just now at the point where I have been totally cleared for exercise and conditioning.  Of course, I would have to be very attentive to what my body tells me while being active.  As such, I am a bit nervous about grappling and/or any kind of wrestling.  If taking those things slow is an option, and I am presuming that it is, I have absolutely no doubt everything will be fine.

My second fear isn’t a real fear…. I guess it is more of a self-esteem issue.  Since I am not young, and I am not in the very best shape (yet), I am afraid that I might be wasting the time of other students who will surely grasp things faster than I will.   On the other hand, I have learned to be quite patient as I have gotten older, both with myself and with the world at large.  Perhaps it is silly to even have this fear, but it is there nonetheless.
Do you think I am too old to start training?

I look forward to hearing from you.

–Johnny G

Aloha John,

When the student is ready, the teacher appears.   Always remember that you are your own best teacher.  Be honest with yourself, know your potential and know your limitations, and you will overcome your obstacles.

I would be happy to take you as a student.  I have an Online Training for beginning students.  Go to IMBacademy.com and go to the OnLine Training Program.  It will cost you $95.00 per year and you will be able to study the long range weaponry of the Filipino Martial Arts, the middle range striking of Muay Thai and Boxing, and the close grappling range of judo, wrestling and jiujitsu, and the concepts, philosophies and principles of Bruce Lee Jeet Kune Do.

If you are interested in hosting my seminar in your city or community, please let me know and I will send you information on my seminar. I will also send you seminar flyers whenever I’m in the East Coast. The only domestic city that I will be conducting a seminar this year will be in Cincinnati on Oct. 9 & 10, 2016.  Attached is the flyer.
Also, you mentioned that you knew of a professional boxing manager or coach that could help a beginning pro boxer with two wins and no losses.  He lives in Queens New York.

I’ll send you his information or you can email information of a manager or coach in New York.

STURGIS ROAD REPORT REVIEW PRIOR TO PUBLICATION?–Was your bike one of the recalls?

I had a 1938 Indian 4 once, but it never got out of its crates. I also crashed a 1948 Chief once, doing more damage to my pride than the bike, but that’s another story for a drunken day.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of comparos, but the readers lap them up. We don’t have to wait to Sturgis to do some occasionally, riding to ghost towns, earthquake zones, questionable joints or points unknown. This way you can combine a destination story with road tests, but we also could just ride the things around the block for a couple hundred miles.

I’m getting in touch about the new book from New York Times Bestselling writer Craig Johnson, AN OBVIOUS FACT (On-sale: September 13, 2016; Viking; $28; ISBN: 9780525426943).

Craig Johnson is the man behind the Walt Longmire mystery novels and the “Longmire” TV series streamed on Netflix, the new season of which premieres September 23rd. This is the first Longmire book to feature motorcycles as a major plot point, though Johnson is a longtime enthusiast.  He rides a 2009 Harley-Davidson Crossbones Special, a 1996 BMW R1100GS, and a Kawasaki 400.

For many years, after completing months-long national book tours for Viking and Penguin, Craig would embark on his own “Outlaw Motorcycle Tour” across Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and beyond.

In AN OBVIOUS FACT, at the annual Sturgis Rally, a young biker is run off the road and ends up in critical condition. When Sheriff Walt Longmire and his good friend Henry Standing Bear are called to investigate in Hulett, Wyoming—the nearest town to America’s first national monument, Devils Tower—things start getting intense and complicated.

New MILLION MILE Bikernet Reader Comment!–First Million-Mile Harley-Davidson

Good lord, 10 engine rebuilds in 1 million miles???? He might be bragging about his mileage (and no doubt it’s a considerable and impressive amount of miles to ride), but he shouldn’t be bragging about the bike, considering he basically got a new motor several times over!

Search “The 400k Mile V-Strom” on Google.  This guy had a 370k mile Harley previously that he had to rebuild every 100k miles.  His V-Strom hasn’t had the head off, EVER.  It’s only ever been opened for a stator replacement, impeller, and valve adjustments.

THAT is something to brag about.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN FROM THE WEEK MAGAZINE—Yusra Mardini was crossing the Mediterranean on a flimsy dinghy with 19 other Syrian refugees last August when the boat’s motor suddenly stopped. The teenager dove into the water and helped pull the dinghy for over three hours to the Greek island of Lesbos, saving all on board.

Mardini eventually reached Germany and is now set for another momentous swim—this time at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The 18-year-old swimmer is part of a team of 10 refugee athletes, the first of its kind to compete in the Games.

BATTLE OF THE KINGS WINNER–Harley-Davidson Athena of Athens, Greece, (owned by Paschalis Tsalamagkas) has won this year’s Harley EMEA region “Battle of the Kings” authorized dealer customizing competition, based on a Sportster Iron 883.

Over 200 dealers entered from more than 10 countries, with consumers voting online to choose 12 finalists that were then jury-judged at this year’s Wheels & Waves rally at Biarritz, France.

ANOTHER NEW MODEL CUSTOM CONTEST–Victory Motorcycles
Operation Octane

Victory Motorcycles has followed numerous other manufacturers, including Harley, Yamaha and Ducati, by launching a dealer-based custom competition.
Called “Operation Octane,” Victory dealers have to 24th October to submit their final build photographs.

A two-week period of online voting will then be open from the 14th November to the 28th November, where everyone is welcome to vote for their favourite Octane build.
The top two winners in both North America and the rest of the world will be notified on 30th November. First place wins $5,000 and second place wins $3,000.

The contest follows a number of previous Octane customizations that led up to the bike’s launch in 2016, including Urs Erbacher’s Ignition Concept, Zach Ness’ Combustion Concept, and also the recent ‘#93Octane‘ customization by stunt rider Aaron Colton.
