I’m not a big fan of social media efforts. What the hell do they mean? I’m lost on a facebook page. I don’t do Twitter, Linkedin, Instagram, or Pinterest. I criticize myself for dodging this crap. Friends and associates suggest I spend more time on these elements than on Bikernet.
If I spent more time on social media we would have larger reader numbers and less content on Bikernet and less time to work on bikes or ride. I don’t have much fun on any of these things and Chris Callen from Cycle Source is about to tell you a terrible story about a Facebook conspiracy.
Whatta you think? There is one easy formula to take care of both issues. If you would share Bikernet content with all your pals on social media, I could stay focused on content, writing stories and even go for a ride from time to time, amazing.

KIWI INDIAN NEWS– National AMCA Meet: Oley, PA
Wow, what a show Oley, PA was this year! It’s always a good meet but this year you needed to bring sun tan lotion as it was as though we were still in SoCal. Beautiful hot ‘n sunny summer days in late April, what the heck! That’s a first in the 27 years we’ve been going to this show.
In prior years we’ve gone to the mall to buy winter underwear to stay warm at this meet, so being this warm was a welcome treat. Better yet, this weather encourages folks from up and down the east coast to make the trek to attend.
I love the vibrancy and energy we get at shows we attend, especially Oley, which is the first AMCA event of the year in this region. I get the feeling all the east coasters have been bottled up all winter long and they’re ready to rock when the Oley Meet comes along.

HOT NEWS FLASH OF THE WEEK, Global Warming Swindle Film
Britain’s Channel 4 has produced a devastating documentary titled “The Great Global Warming Swindle.” It has apparently not been broadcast by any of the networks in the United States. But, fortunately, it is available on the Internet.
Distinguished scientists specializing in climate and climate-related fields talk in plain English and present readily understood graphs showing what a crock the current global warming hysteria is.
These include scientists from MIT and top-tier universities in a number of countries. Some of these are scientists whose names were paraded on some of the global warming publications that are being promoted in the media — but who state plainly that they neither wrote those publications nor approved them.
One scientist threatened to sue unless his name was removed.
While the public has been led to believe that “all” the leading scientists buy the global warming hysteria and the political agenda that goes with it, in fact the official reports from the United Nations or the National Academy of Sciences are written by bureaucrats — and then garnished with the names of leading scientists who were “consulted,” but whose contrary conclusions have been ignored.
There is no question that the globe is warming but it has warmed and cooled before, and is not as warm today as it was some centuries ago, before there were any automobiles and before there was as much burning of fossil fuels as today.
None of the dire things predicted today happened then.
The British documentary goes into some of the many factors that have caused the earth to warm and cool for centuries, including changes in activities on the sun, 93 million miles away and wholly beyond the jurisdiction of the Kyoto treaty.
According to these climate scientists, human activities have very little effect on the climate, compared to many other factors, from volcanoes to clouds.
These climate scientists likewise debunk the mathematical models that have been used to hype global warming hysteria, even though hard evidence stretching back over centuries contradicts these models.
What is even scarier than seeing how easily the public, the media, and the politicians have been manipulated and stampeded, is discovering how much effort has been put into silencing scientists who dare to say that the emperor has no clothes.
Academics who jump on the global warming bandwagon are far more likely to get big research grants than those who express doubts — and research is the lifeblood of an academic career at leading universities.
Environmental movements around the world are committed to global warming hysteria and nowhere more so than on college and university campuses, where they can harass those who say otherwise. One of the scientists interviewed on the British documentary reported getting death threats.
In politics, even conservative Republicans seem to have taken the view that, if you can’t lick ’em, join ’em. So have big corporations, which have joined the stampede.
This only enables the green crusaders to declare at every opportunity that “everybody” believes the global warming scenario, except for a scattered few “deniers” who are likened to Holocaust deniers.
The difference is that we have the hardest and most painful evidence that there was a Holocaust. But, for the global warming scenario that is causing such hysteria, we have only a movie made by a politician and mathematical models whose results change drastically when you change a few of the arbitrarily selected variables.
No one denies that temperatures are about a degree warmer than they were a century ago.
What the climate scientists in the British documentary deny is that you can mindlessly extrapolate that, or that we are headed for a climate catastrophe if we don’t take drastic steps that could cause an economic catastrophe.
“Global warming” is just the latest in a long line of hysterical crusades to which we seem to be increasingly susceptible.

Couple this with evidence that the so-called “green friendly” electric vehicles are actually not helping the atmosphere when you consider the manufacturing process and the fact they are very inefficient, I guess fossil-fuel internal combustion is still the best way to power ourselves across America.

THE UNCLE ON THE CHANGING WEATHER–
As the weather warms many of us are making our way to the garage to give the bike a once over before rolling out for the first few rides of the year. For some they can’t wait for those initial fresh days and yet others are a little more cautious.
Winter brings heavy road salt and sand accumulating in intersections and along the sides of the road. Toss in lax driving skill for the cages and it can be downright deadly. For others it is about dollars and cents. Spring riding days can be sporadic and often a plated bike can sit still for a week or two at a time before they can get out and ride.
Insurance money that could be spent on a new piece of chrome, a little more performance or even just a few more cold ones for the back of the fridge.
Eventually though the calendar closes in on the prime riding season and time is spent cleaning and polishing, getting rid of last year’s bugs and guts. Fresh fluids, fresh air draws the road ever nearer. A few more trips around the bike before we are satisfied that it is ready for another year.
For others it is putting those last few finishing touches on a winter project that went way over budget, way over your skill level but now it is last minutes checks for loose nuts, for loose lines. A winter’s worth of work coming to a close. Will it leave family and friends in awe or will it be awful.
The bad days are spent mapping out a summer of riding. Rallies here and there, campfire friends and dive bar buddies. A million miles to be ridden in a handful of weekends.
Smoke Out is on the list and maybe you’ll check out that other local run you’ve been hearing about. Wednesday night rides with the boys, Saturday night rides with some young thing squealing for more. A ride for patriotism, a ride for freedom, a ride for a friend no longer here.
A new riding season dawns across the nation. Are you ready?

STURGIS MUSEUM FREEDOM FIGHTER INDUCTION ISSUE–
I do know that the leaders of all of the Rights groups that attended Heartland Steam sent and signed a letter to the board of directors of the Museum; voicing their extreme disappointment about the lack of a Freedom Fighter being inducted this year.
My opinion is that although all of us that are involved in the rights movement know one another; the rest of the motorcycling world doesn’t know that we exist.
I seriously doubt if our absence will even be noticed at the Induction breakfast. When I was informed that the Museum had made the decision not to induct a Freedom Fighter; I canceled my reservations and didn’t purchase a breakfast ticket.
Why spend my money there if they won’t support something that is so important to us, that we have spent a large portion of our lives fighting for. I will spend my money elsewhere until they see their error.

TENNESSEE MOTORCYCLE LEGISLATIVE NEWS– Carol Simpson here in Tennessee.
Two factoids have come to my attention while working at the Tennessee State Legislature during our “off season”. Our legislature meets from January into April/May every year.
Lobbyists come by to “visit” and gather info on “what’s been happening”. Legislators spend the “off months” campaigning, making money in their day jobs, and going to national conferences where they take the pulse of what is happening in other states and in special interest industries.
One friendly lobbyist, who rides, and is a representative of Farmers Mutual Insurance company made a point of coming by my office about four months ago. At the National convention of INSURANCE companies relayed that re-instituting mandatory helmet laws in vulnerable states as a PRIORITY issue. Michigan was #1 target because their freedom of choice is recent, and because their skewing of numbers supposedly shows a marked increase in fatalities.
Several legislators who are members of NCSL National coalition of State Legislators attended National level conference. Mandatory Helmet Laws was featured in meetings of the breakout Highway Safety meetings. Statistical assistance and directional strategies were discussed and made available to NCSL members through their vast resources. Of the five or six national state legislature associations, NCSL is the largest with the biggest staff of support and data.
We have a BIG battle brewing. If I was aware of these TWO initiatives from TWO entities, my guess is that there are many more and coalitions are being formed.
I will look into more information if asked by any of you out there in Freedom of Choice land. Sharing info on the reps list is a big boon to our battles.

JOHN PARHAM R.I.P.
John Parham died on April 20th at the age of 63. He was big into anything motorcycles as a collector, sponsor, promotor, business man, rider, motorcycle advocate and much more. He was the founder and owner of J&P Cycles , which is a huge retail and mail order business. His motorcycle collection became the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamoso, Iowa. He worked tirelessly with the Motorsport Aftermarket Group (MAG), His legacy benefits every rider in America and around the world. John was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame and the Sturgis Hall of Fame.
God’s speed to you John. You will be sorely missed.

On April 15th, 10 year old Zaden Florez succumbed to injuries he suffered while racing at Lodi Cycle Bowl. He will always be loved and will be missed by all who knew him. Some old-timers in the Trailblazers might remember one of our Hall-of-Famers from the past named Lodge Cunningham. Lodge is not with us any longer, but before he passed away in 1991, at age 89, he had written notes from his life in Hollywood as a sound man and about his friends and neighbors of the Upper Mojave Desert where he and his wife welcomed tourists to their cafe in Red Mountain’s former Owl Saloon.
Thanks to Elizabeth Babcock, Cunningham’s memories are now featured in the newly released book “Tales from the Owl Saloon. Hollywood, Red Mountain and Beyond.” Since Lodge was an early day member of the Trailblazers, the club is mentioned in a few places, as well as a photo from our 26th annual banquet, in 1963.
The 308-page, softbound book, captures the grungy, yet intoxication atmosphere of California’s early mining days and the fast paced life of early Hollywood. More than 50 cartoons by Richard Nuckles and nearly 100 historic photographs further season the mix.

NEWS FROM THE CLUB FRONT– State Farm Insurance Says No Coverage For Motorcycle Clubs.
The MPP received a copy of this letter from State Farm Insurance notifying a chapter of the Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club in Florida that the insurance coverage on their clubhouse was being cancelled.
State Farm’s explanation for the policy cancellation is “we don’t provide coverage for businesses engaged in motorcycle clubs.”
The MPP personally verified the incident in a face-to-face conversation with the individual that provided the letter to the MPP. He is a member of the chapter denied coverage.

Millions Could Be Denied Coverage?
Although there might be nothing technically illegal with State Farm’s actions because they are a private company, the blatantly discriminatory policy stands diametrically opposed to a the ideas of free expression and association and, in this instance, respect for the service of Veterans.
The Vietnam/Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club extends coast to coast and has a massive membership. And to be balanced, if there were a specific or legitimate reason given why this particular club had their coverage cancelled then it may be understandable and motorcyclists would raise no objection. But the letter explicated a general policy of not providing “coverage for businesses engaged in motorcycle clubs.”
The potential number of people impacted beyond this club is staggering. The AMA estimates that there are approximately 10 million registered motorcyclists in America, many of whom belong to motorcycle clubs. And the influence of Veterans on motorcycle club culture is generally accepted as common knowledge.
Beyond motorcycle clubs themselves, many of which are registered nonprofit entities, many businesses are “engaged” with motorcycle clubs. Consider the thousands of motorcycle repair and apparel shops that regularly engage in business with members of motorcycle clubs and their property.
Motorcycle manufacturers as well. And the thousands of public accommodations, including bars and restaurants in all 50 states, that host motorcycle club charity events and engage in business with motorcycle clubs on a daily basis.
The National Council of Clubs Seeks Explanation from State Farm
How many of the 10 million motorcyclists or their supporters in America are insured by State Farm? How many would choose a different company if they were aware that State Farm would not cover the property of motorcycle club’s or businesses engaged in motorcycle clubs?
Recently, the National Council of Clubs, an organization representing the interests of motorcycle clubs and motorcyclists nationwide, wrote a letter requesting clarification of State Farm’s policy based on the cancellation notice given to the Legacy Vets MC. The NCOC believes that no motorcyclist or business that supports motorcyclists should engage in business with State Farm if they choose to stand by a general policy of denying coverage to businesses engaged in motorcycle clubs.

LACONIA MOTORCYCLE WEEK NEWS– This June, Laconia Motorcycle Week returns to New Hampshire for its 94th year, leaving some wondering how this popular, time-honored event first came to be.
Don’t try doing the math because there’s a bit more to it than just counting back 94 years… The rally actually started in 1916, organized by local motorcycle dealers in central and southern New England, with a couple hundred motorcyclists traveling north for a get together (dubbed a“gypsy tour”) at Weirs Beach.
The tour was first sanctioned by the Federation of American Mo-torcyclists in 1917 and when the FAM disbanded in 1919, the Motorcycle and Allied Trades As-sociation (M&ATA) took over the sanction until 1924, when the American Motorcycle Associa-tion (AMA) was formed. Back then, the weekend event centered around races and hill climbs. The number of participants grew each year as did the event’s duration. Over time, the rally blos-somed into a week-long event, eventually suffering in attendance and popularity after getting wrapped up in the upheavals of the 60’s. The rally reverted to a 3-day weekend and would re-main so until 1991, when organizers revived the week-long event after seeing the success of Sturgis’ 50th Anniversary Rally in 1990. Laconia Motorcycle Week reclaimed the support of local businesses and the AMA as a week-long rally and the oldest gypsy tour in the country.
Today, Laconia Motorcycle Week® is a much-expanded version of the early “gypsy tour” years offering attendees lots of fun, food, music and, of course, a forum to share in their passion (big or small) for riding. Over 230,000 riders are expected to descend on the Lakes Region for the Ral-ly, holding the honor of the oldest of the three national rallies with Daytona and Sturgis being Laconia’s sister rallies. Sure, the rev of motorcycles and sight of leather (lots of it) may be overwhelming, but don’t be fooled. Behind those leather jackets are just regular people; a multi-generational group of enthusiasts, from all walks of life, who all just happen to share in the ex-hilaration and liberation that riding brings.
“It’s a rite of passage,” says organizer Jennifer Anderson, “Many of us grew up hearing about “Laconia” and couldn’t wait to experience what all the buzz was about. It’s easy to assume that the Rally is just a big party enjoyed by those on two-wheels, but it is so much more than that. This is the one week of the year when riders get to hang out with thousands of other people, from all around the U.S. and world, who enjoy the very same thing they like – getting out and riding. The Rally offers us all a chance of camaraderie while still having fun, packing on the miles, and even raising money for much deserved local charities”
And its boundaries have expanded, too. You’ll notice an uptick in motorcycle traffic throughout the state (not just limited to Laconia, Weirs Beach, or Loudon). Motorcycle enthusiasts come to the state to enjoy the scenic riding as far east as the seacoast and as far north as the picturesque Kancamagus Highway, proving half the fun is getting here.
So be a part of the continuing history. Plan a ride to New Hampshire for this year’s Motorcycle Week (June 10 – June 18). Whether it’s your first or 94th visit, you’ll find the passion for riding, around which this event was founded, has never changed.

I have to comment on the death of the motorcyclist and law enforcement brutality. The similarity is the same with my father who died with law enforcement, who choose to decide what is more important, to relentlessly chase a motorist and put the public at risk.
The grief and life changing event is uncalled for, unprofessional. The video shows everything that happened, not what the response of the Berkley County Sheriffs Office states. This motorcyclist was killed at the hands of the sheriff deputy. My sympathy and condolences go out to all family and friends affected by this tragedy.

VERTICAL PLATES IN SOUTH DAKOTA–
Abate of South Dakota is introducing a bill to make mounting motorcycle plates vertical,. I just found out that our Dept of Public Safety/Highway patrol will be testifying against us.
They say that the plates are hard to read. Does anyone have any data to prove otherwise? And does your state allow vertical plates?

NEWS FROM THE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS FOUNDATION–Reps/Board/Friends/Supporters & Allies:
I am pleased to report that tomorrow, both the House of Representatives and the Senate will introduce a bipartisan and bicameral measure that addresses concerns over motorcycle profiling.
Leading this effort are Senators Johnson (Republican – Wisc.) and Shaheen (Democrat – New Hamp.) in the Senate and in the House, Representatives Walberg (Republican – Michigan) and Pocan (Democrat – Wisconsin).
Additional co-sponsors are being sought this evening in the House so we may end up with additional supporters before introduction tomorrow. Notably, this bill is both bicameral and bipartisan – a significant achievement in today’s political climate. It demonstrates the importance of this issue and shows that it’s an issue that affects everyone – not just Republicans or Democrats.
The bills will look similar to what was introduced last summer; it will define the practice of profiling, promote public awareness of motorcycle profiling and encourage collaboration and communication between law enforcement and the motorcycle community. Further, it urges state law enforcement officials to condemn motorcycle profiling in written policies and training materials. Though the bills are resolutions, they send a strong message on this issue that affects so many riders.
A quick note of thanks to our allies at the Motorcycle Profiling Project for their support and supplying the MRF with data to convince our federal lawmakers that change is needed, as well as all of our MRF members and supporters and the Motorcycle Profiling Working Group that helped get us this far.
I will be in touch in the coming days to provide a bill number for both the House and Senate proposals. Asking for additional supporters and passage of the bill will be a key talking point at our Bikers Inside the Beltway event scheduled for May 23 – VERY TIMELY!

It is a knockoff, if you compare the thickness of the brackets you can really see the difference and there is also a difference in the wall thickness and there is no O-ring groves machined into the tube where you would put your feet. The wall thickness of the tube is to small to even machine the groves in the tube for the O-rings.

CMT/ABATE is working on strategy this year, and most likely will not run a Freedom of Choice bill in this first session of two year General Assembly–
We are ECSTATIC that Arizona defeated the Mandatory Helmet law in the first committee that heard that bill this year. We are hopeful that any state facing a Mandatory Helmet initiative will be equally successful. The data of these efforts will be a HUGE part of our future strategy
We have been successful in having our Endowment Grant reinstated for Safety and Awareness from the Tennessee Department of Safety. On Wednesday, March 22, we will be producing the Don’t Ride Fried Carnival on the Entrance Patio of the Legislative Plaza. Check our facebooks for pics of this informative and fun event.

JOE LEONARD R.I.P.
Indy car and motorcycle champion, Joe Leonard passed away on April 27th at 84 years old. He had been in poor health for many years.
Joe is one of only two drivers to win national championships in cars and on motorcycles. He won 27 national AMA races and six IndyCar races.
He set a track record and won the pole at the 1968 Indianapolis 500, driving a turbine car for Vel’s Parnelli Jones Racing. He led for 31 laps and was out front when a fuel shaft broke in his car nine laps short of the checkered flag. Bobby Unser won with Leonard 12th.
Leonard won his IndyCar championships in 1971 and 1972, and twice finished 3rd at the 500-mile race (1967 and 72).
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 13th at 1 pm at the Oakhill Cemetery Chapel of the Oaks in San Jose. All friends are invited. A celebration of life follows in the reception room until 4pm.
Bring your favorite Joe Leonard story. Joe worked hard, rode and drove hard and played hard. We have lost a legend that we will never forget. God Speed

BILLY HAMILL INJURED
It was reported that Billy Hamill came off hard at Willow Springs last weekend. No word of injuries except a collarbone. Hope all is well soon.

5TH ANNUAL DESERT RACERS REUNION

Goat Breker hosted this event at his hotel in Randsburg on Saturday, April 29th. There were about 40 past and present legends of District 37 Desert Racing and Baja winners.
BBQ Tri-Tip, salad, Ect., was expertly prepared by Goat’s friends and racer wives. Baja and desert racer, AC Bakken watched over the BBQ. Multi talented, he cooks as well as he raced.
All enjoyed recalling how fast they once were and almost wins. It was a legendary mix of the best off road racers from the 50’s, 60’s-70’s and later. Others in attendance: Art Knapp, John “R” Rice, Mitch Mayes, Brent Wallingsford, Scot Harden, Bob Rutten, Ken Newton, Gus Paul, Bob Maynard, Jerry Counts, Larry Langley, Ken Boyko, John Connolly, and more….
