Hey,
This is a week for planning. We are scrambling in many directions, but we always need plan B. We will tear into the 1928 Shovelhead this weekend and see if we can make it Sturgis run ready.
I need a backup for my Sturgis ride. Because of Born Free, my Panhead engine rebuild is slow going.
The factory Racer is running, but may need some fucking with. We are going to make it more rideable with some more Paughco Vintage components.
The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown and BorntoRide.com, Sturgis Museum.

FEATURE COMING FROM FELICIA MORGAN– I have a guy who says he knows you, Thomas Kelly from Performance Specialties in Kingman, AZ, who has a couple of remarkable bikes with interesting stories and thought you might be interested.
The Buellster that he built for a customer (yes, a Buell and a Sportster) and an FXR super gasser that’s his personal bike. Here’s a couple of snaps.
There’s a third bike..a Sporty, that he’s built for a friend who had a heart transplant. After 27years of sitting in crates, it was quite the endeavor since it included sifting through to figure out which unlabeled parts were Sporty and which were Honda.
The shop is amazingly immaculate. I’m telling ya, you could eat off the floor. No exaggeration.
Anyway, I’ve got a little break here so I’ll get it together.

UNCLE MONKEY ON MOTORCYCLE PURCHASING– Sorry no test pilots. The phrase sent the man into frenzy about never buying a bike without riding it, that I was an asshole.
I wasn’t surprised when he was a no show the next day when he said he would come to look at the bike. I wasn’t surprised. After years of buying and selling bikes I knew he would be a no show when I said the words and he exploded. Right now he is telling his friends how he almost bought Uncle Monkey’s show bike Snow White. How he had the money and was already to buy but I had blown the deal.
The truth is he never intended to buy the bike. He just wanted a story to tell when he went to the local bar – a story about the one that got away. It is nothing more than a fishing story for his buddies. They will laugh in disbelief, buy him a beer, slap him on the back and tell him what a good guy he is.
He gets to be the hero for the night. He’ll have bragging rights for years to come. Just like when him and Billy Lane hung out for all of Sturgis in 2013.
You see I cannot remember selling a bike where the buyer didn’t take it for at least some sort of a ride. Bikes are easily stolen, easily dropped, easily ran into something when the bike turns out to be way more than they expected.
When I tell someone no test pilots they understand those reasons – the serious buyers still want to come to see the bike. After a little haggling and we both know whether the bike is going to be the right one for the person we can talk about a test ride.
So now you know when your buddy shows up talking about not buying a bike because the owner didn’t allow test rides you can call his bullshit that he never intended to buy it in the first place.
-bad Uncle Monkey
The Uncle is right. In most cases I will never ask to test ride a bike for all of those reasons. I can sit on it, listen to it run, etc. But I don’t want to ride it until it’s mine.–Bandit

HARLEY to bid for Ducati?
Respected London based business news specialist Reuters has thrown a giant rock into our pond with a June report that Harley-Davidson is actively mulling a bid to buy Italian sportsbike specialist Ducati.
Under the headline “Harley-Davidson enters race to buy Italian rival Ducati” the report, by Pamela Barbaglia, for Reuters London, said that “U.S. motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson is lining up a takeover bid for Italian rival Ducati, in a deal that could be worth up to 1.5 billion euros ($1.67 billion), sources told Reuters” – those sources are also reporting that Harley has indeed decided to explore their options, “with investment banker Goldman Sachs hired to work on the deal.”
Tentative bids are expected during July.
Barbaglia goes on to say that “Ducati was on the wish list of private equity funds KKR (themselves no strangers to rumors connecting them with plans to buy Harley), Bain Capital and Permira, which are all working on the deal – said the sources, who declined to be identified as the process is private.”
“Goldman Sachs hired for deal that may cost 15 times Ducati’s EBITDA”
The only response that the report quotes is one in an e-mail from a spokesman for VW group’s works council: “Ducati is a jewel, the sale of which is not supported by the labor representatives on Volkswagen’s supervisory board” adding that “Harley-Davidson is miles behind Ducati in technology terms.” Volkswagen’s powerful labor unions control half the seats on the carmaker’s 20-strong supervisory board.
VAG have retained investment boutique Evercore, who are known to have sent out information packages to a number of potential suitors including Ducati’s previous owner Investindustrial, who took a stake in Ducati before the financial crisis, subsequently taking control of the business before selling it to Audi in 2012. The report says that Investindustrial is now looking to compete with heavyweight private equity firms and large industry players to regain control.
Barbaglia says that Volkswagen, Audi, Harley-Davidson, KKR and Bain Capital declined to comment and that Bajaj, Investindustrial and Permira were not immediately available at the time the report was published.
Ducati last year reported revenues of 593 million euros (approximately $677m). Barbaglia’s sources are reported to have said that Volkswagen hopes to raise between 1.4 billion and 1.5 billion euros (up to $1.7Bn) from the sale of Ducati, valuing it at 14-15 times its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of about 100 million euros. The German car maker wants a valuation that reflects trading multiples of similar trophy assets in the automotive industry, such as Italian car maker Ferrari, which trades at almost 30 times its forward earnings.
Indian motorcycle firm Hero MotoCorp (the company that bought a $25m/49.4 percent stake in Erik Buell Racing in 2013) and its rival TVS Motor Company are said to have also initially expressed interest in Ducati, but were put off by its price tag and decided to walk away, and others, such as BMW, Honda and Suzuki, who were also scared off.

Awesome article and can’t wait to see the finished product. I’m excited to hear how he likes the Love Jugs, as I am contemplating a pair as well. Great to hear about him sticking with the broken machine instead of whipping out his credit like a new dong at the red light district. Kid’s got heart! Again, can’t wait to see the final product.Curious to see what’s up with the orange swingers….did he repaint the whole frame or just that piece? Just bad ass!

Greg Hirst REMEMBERED– Hundreds of riders met to pay tribute
Wednesday, 21 June 2017
Australia’s motorcycle community has mourned the sudden loss of one of its most passionate advocates and motorcycling enthusiasts.
Greg Hirst, 64, died on June 6 following surgery complications, surrounded by his family.
Hundreds of riders met in Prospect on Monday for a funeral processional ride along the M4 to Penrith in honour of Mr Hirst.
Motorcycle riding, Christianity and homelessness were causes close to Mr Hirst’s heart as a Brotherhood Christian motorcycle club member and Parramatta Street Youth Project chairman.
He was instrumental in organizing the long running Bikers Australia Blanket Run from Penrith to Parramatta every August to coincide with the start of Homeless Persons Week. He also encouraged schools to run blanket and food drives for the homeless.
Mr Hirst was also the executive producer and co-presenter of television documentary series Temporary Australians, which aimed to show a different side of the motorcycling fraternity.
“Not all motorcyclists are about tattoos and outlaw bike clubs,” Mr Hirst told the Sun newspaper in 2015.
“They’re people who have a passion for riding and we let them tell their stories.”
Mr Hirst is survived by his wife of 37 years Colleen and six children.

THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL OPEN–
A delightful angelic little boy was waiting for his mother outside the ladies room of the gas station.
As he stood there, he was approached by a man who asked, “Sonny, can you tell me where the Post Office is?”
The little boy replied, “Sure! Just go straight down this street two blocks and turn to your right. It’s on the left.”
The man thanked the boy kindly, complimented him on how bright he was and said, “I’m the new pastor in town. If you and your mommy come to church on Sunday,
I’ll show you how to get to Heaven.”
The little boy replied with a chuckle; “You’re shitting me, right? You can’t even find the Post Office.”

Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki Happy To Contend on Southwick’s Sandy Circuit– The Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki riders will face a different kind of soil this weekend as the series heads to the sandy circuit of The Wick 338 in Southwick, Massachusetts. As the series moves over the halfway hump into Round 7, the sand is a welcomed change as Austin Forkner, Joey Savatgy, Adam Cianciarulo and Justin Hill focus on capturing top 10 finishes this weekend.
Forkner’s ride last weekend in RedBud didn’t match his overall result as he had to overcome a Moto 2 opening turn crash not of his own fault and ride from dead last to 14th. He’s eager to stay out of trouble this weekend and enjoy some time back up on the podium. Last year, Forkner celebrated his very first professional overall podium at “The Wick” and is ready to do it again.
“Last weekend was a tough one because I felt good enough to be back up on the podium,” said Forkner. “I’m looking forward to changing it up this weekend with the sand track. I have good memories from Southwick and hoping that will help me out when I need it this weekend.”
As the second half of the series gets underway, Savatgy is hoping that Southwick can be the race where he steps back onto the podium. He scored a top 10 there last year and is determined to better that result.
“I’ve needed something to get me back into the groove I was in during the opening rounds and I think that the terrain change of Southwick could be helpful,” said Savatgy. “It’s an interesting track that will hopefully level the playing field a little bit.”
There’s no better motivation than wanting to bounce back and Cianciarulo knows he’s capable of better results at Southwick. The Floridian is no stranger to sand tracks and is looking to take advantage of his comfort this weekend on The Wick 338’s circuit.
“I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m a sand rider, but it’s nice to be familiar with a certain type of dirt,” said Cianciarulo. “For some people, the sand really freaks them out and I don’t think that’s me. It would be nice to get a good start and be able to battle up front for the lead. I wasn’t able to do that last weekend and I’m ready to be back up there.”
Hill rode better than his results showed last weekend at RedBud and while he hasn’t ridden the Southwick track in awhile, it’s coming at the perfect time to help the momentum swing his way. Even if rain hits the area in the morning as forecasted, the Pacific Northwest rider won’t be bothered by it.
“I felt better last weekend and I think this weekend could be a good one for me,” said Hill. “It would be great to prove that I am capable of running in the top 10, but I’ll need to make sure my starts keep me out of trouble.”
The Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki fans are able to get autographs from riders on Saturday morning at the Monster Energy Kawasaki semi. To watch the motos, the NBC Sports Gold pass can be purchased for nonstop coverage. The first 250 Class will be LIVE on MavTV at 1 p.m. ET, while Moto 2 will be delayed until Sunday, July 9 on NBC Sports at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Yamaha Previews bLU cRU Road Racing– And Fan Activities Scheduled For Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca This Weekend
This weekend, the Yamaha bLU cRU road racing teams will be on the world stage as they join the stars of World Superbike in Monterey, CA.
Round 6 of the MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Racing Championship gets under way Friday morning on Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca’s 2.238-mile, 11-turn road course, which features the famous “Corkscrew” left/right downhill combination turn.
Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Factory Racing: Beaubier & Hayes
Two-time and defending MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier is currently in third place in the 2017 points standings after a weekend in Utah that he’d just as soon forget. He’s looking to return to form this weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, a track that he holds near and dear to his heart.
“Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is my favorite weekend of the year,” Cameron said. “It’s close to home for me, and it’s great to be able to share the pits with the World Superbike guys. We’re looking to turn things around after a difficult weekend in Utah. My team and I are ready for redemption.”
Four-time AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes currently sits fourth in the points standings, and he is returning to a track where he notched a win last year.
“Last year, I had two solid races and one win at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca aboard my Yamaha Factory YZF-R1 Superbike,” commented Josh. “I’m hoping to continue that trend this year. With us racing alongside World Superbike, it’s always a great event. We get a large crowd of enthusiastic fans there, and I’m ready to put on a good show for them!”
Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Extended Service/Graves/Yamaha: Gerloff & Beach
In MotoAmerica Supersport, things couldn’t get much closer between teammates Garrett Gerloff and JD Beach, as 2015 Supersport Champion JD has a one-point lead over defending Supersport Champion Garrett. Each rider will be trying to distance himself from the other as they go for the pole and the win aboard their 2016 Yamaha YZF-R6 machines in Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s race.
“Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is a really famous and epic racetrack,” Garrett said. “It’s challenging and hard to conquer, but it’s also a track that is really satisfying to do well on. I’ve really enjoyed racing there, and I couldn’t be more excited to go back and rip around the hills of Monterey! And, with World Superbike there, I really want to show the world what I can do. I have some more tools in my bag this year than in the past, and I really think that’s going to help my cause this weekend.”
JD commented. “Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is a round that I look forward to every year. It’s been a track that I’ve had kind of a love/hate relationship with, but my new 2017 R6 should work well there. I’m looking forward to racing as part of the World Superbike show and having a chance to see all the awesome West Coast fans.”
Supersport Qualifying is Saturday at 5:25 PM PST, and the Supersport Race will go green on Sunday at 11:10 AM PST.
Meet The Yamaha bLU cRU Road Racers
All your favorite Yamaha U.S. bLU cRU road racers will be available for autographs at their Team Transporters in the MotoAmerica Paddock on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon from 1:15 to 1:45 PM each day. GUN NUT REPORT– When a Robber Hit him With Pepper Spray, This Brooklyn Gun Store Owner Got the Last Blast
One dumb criminal learned a valuable lesson Wednesday morning when he attempted to rob guns from a sporting goods store: don’t bring pepper spray to a gunfight.
The Darwin Award nominee entered the DF Brothers Sports Center on New Utrecht Avenue in Bensonhurst, NY around 10:55 a.m. and asked to see a gun for sale. When the owner, who was working behind the counter at the time, asked the man for his license, the suspect pulled out a can of pepper spray and sprayed him in the face.
The suspect then pulled out a hammer and smashed a display case filled with firearms. He was able to get his hands on two guns before the owner drew his firearm and began shooting at the suspect, who quickly abandoned his loot, fleeing the scene empty handed and possibly suffering from a gunshot wound.
Investigators collected evidence at the scene and continue to check area hospitals for a patient with a gunshot wound who fits the description given by the store owner.
Dummies gonna dumb.

Loretta Lynn and family have hosted the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Rocky Mountain ATV/MX AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship for nearly 40 years and decided to host their own event to cater to the motorcycle-riding community at large. This special event benefits from the gracious hospitality of Country Music Legend, Loretta Lynn.
“We’ve been having motorcycles here forever with the AMA, and all year long thousands of people riding in to camp at the Ranch. This is what we do here, and I’m so excited for this new one to happen.” shared Loretta Lynn.
The event will feature Loretta’s Ride for Mission 22, a multi-spoked charity ride that will benefit Mission 22, a 501(C)3 organization that provides treatment programs for PTSD and TBI while raising awareness on the tragic issue of veteran suicide.
“22 separate motorcycle rides starting from locations from the North, South, East and West will culminate at The Ranch with Loretta & Friends performing with an All-Star Band on Sunday, October 1,” says Mission 22 Executive Director Sara Dawdy “We sincerely thank Mrs. Lynn and a wonderful group of artists and musicians who will be coming out to entertain to help make this our most special and important fund-raiser of the year.”
Ride-in campers will enjoy a stunning location along Hurricane Creek with easy access to the event hub, concert stage, vendors, entertainment, food court and bars. Tow vehicles, motor homes, small and larger RV’s will all have a variety of options available. Attendees can chose from a variety of ticket options. 4 day passes, daily passes and a limited number of VIP passes.
Event planning is in the hands of R&R Promotions, a specialty agency with decades of motorcycle event promotions and deep ties to the national motorcycle family. “We are excited to help put together the Tennessee Motorcycles & Music Revival alongside the Lynn family and deliver on the promise of an incredible fusion of motorcycling, music, and giving back in support of our military community,” says Carrie Repp of R&R Promotions.
In addition to the headlining performances and multiple bands, the event will feature a variety of music and motorcycle related entertainment. Craftsmen and women are also invited to apply for a special area that will feature custom and hand-built items and accessories.

ALL AMERICAN RACERS (AAR) CREATES NEW VEHICLES!
All American Racers has a long history of tackling all kinds of interesting engineering projects. From race cars to planes to motorcycles, AAR rarely shies away from a challenge.
At the beginning of 2017, the always smiling motocross champion David Bailey paid AAR a visit and told us of his plan to tackle the ‘Race Across America’ with his fellow legendary racers Doug Henry, Jeff Ward, and Micky Dymond.
David asked us if we would be interested in making a couple hand cycles that would be lighter, stronger, and a little more racy than the cycle he was accustomed to riding. We jumped at the chance.
Fast forward a few months and AAR was putting the finishing touches on two beautiful, built from scratch, hand-powered carbon fiber cycles that David and Doug have now used to finish 2nd in one of the most grueling bike races imaginable. (RACE ACROSS AMERICA or RAAM (http://www.raceacrossamerica.org/)
With support from the Road 2 Recovery Foundation, the ‘Legends of the Road’ team of motocross greats David, Doug, Jeff, and Micky started their journey in Oceanside California on June 17th and battled the elements (especially the heat through Arizona and the rain and wind as they moved East) for 3070 miles to reach the shores of Maryland in just 7 days, 19 hours, and 58 minutes. AAR is proud to be associated with the members of the Legends of the Road race team and admire and share their fighting spirit.
*The Road 2 Recovery Foundation is a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization founded to help professional Action Sport athletes and AMA licensed professional motocross/supercross members with financial assistance if they sustain career-ending injuries as well as providing motivational, emotional, and spiritual support to these individuals and their families.

THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS OPEN– A guy walks into a bar and sits down next to an extremely gorgeous woman. The first thing he notices about her though, are her pants. They were skin-tight, high waisted and had no obvious mechanism zipper, buttons or Velcro) for opening them. After several minutes of puzzling over how she got the pants up over her hips, he finally worked up the nerve to ask her.
“Excuse me miss, but how do you get into your pants?”
“Well,” she replied, “you can start by buying me a drink.”

Pew Research Center Compares Male, Female Gun Owners– According to a new study by Pew Research Center, male and female gun owners in the United States vary drastically. Here are the main points Pew talks about:
1. Women who own guns tend to become gun owners at a later age than men.
2. Women are more likely than men to cite protection – rather than recreation – as the only reason they own a gun.
3. Women who own guns are less likely than their male counterparts to say they go sport shooting or hunting, though substantial shares of women do so.
4. Female gun owners are less likely than male gun owners to say they watch TV programs or videos about guns and to say they visit websites about guns, hunting or shooting sports.
5. Male gun owners are more likely than female gun owners to say there is a gun that is both loaded and easily accessible to them all of the time when they’re at home.
6. Men and women who own guns are similar when it comes to how they see gun ownership. Majorities of both groups of gun owners consider the right to own guns to be essential to their personal sense of freedom, and somewhat similar shares say being a gun owner is very or somewhat important to their overall identity.
7. Among Republican and Republican-leaning gun owners, women tend to be more supportive than men of policy proposals that would restrict gun ownership.
· Encouraging women to learn about firearms and how to properly use a loaded gun.
I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve asked a question and have received rude responses from gun store owners and employees. Answering questions without a snark or a “duh, you should know this” type of attitude can really make a difference in encouraging women to be a part of the firearms community. Be patient and answer the question openly, honestly and without being condescending.
· Teaching women about all aspects of firearms, including how they function and the different types of guns and ammo.Everyone has to start somewhere! We should be enthusiastic we have another Second Amendment supporter on our side! Let’s help our community grow by educating others. Think of those who took you under your wing and taught you about firearms. Where would your firearms skills be without them?
· Planning women only classes that are taught by female instructors.
This allows women to ask questions that are more pertinent to them, like how to rack a slide when they don’t have the same forearm muscle strength as a man or how to properly shoot a rifle without digging into cleavage (trust me, it’s a very real problem). Having someone who understands the struggle can put a new shooter at ease and they could receive helpful pointers.
· Encouraging women to join the shooting sports. Most women assume that the shooting sports are for men only. I have a friend who does competition shooting and she can beat out men in time and accuracy. We need more women who aren’t afraid to be the only female up to bat in shooting competitions.
At the end of the day, we all have a responsibility to make sure new shooters know the basics of owning a firearm, including the four rules for gun safety, but we also have the responsibility to make sure we’re being warm and welcoming and doing everything in our power to educate.

Gettysburg Bike Week Geared Up for 2017 Rally July 6-9th– Foghat and 50 Shades of Men Two of Many Acts Booked for GBW 16th Anniversary
Back for its 16th anniversary rally at the Allstar Events Complex in Gettysburg, PA, Gettysburg Bike Week kicks off Thursday, July 6, 2017, and runs through Sunday, July 9.
“Hard to believe this is the 16th year, but you know what they say about time flying and having fun,” said GBW event coordinator Kelly Shue.
This year, GBW is proud to feature English rock band Foghat and premier male revue 50 Shades of Men among this year’s entertainment slate. Both acts perform Friday night. Formed in England in the early 1970s, Foghat has sold millions of records and rocked audiences for decades.
And for the ladies, GBW is happy to welcome the best male burlesque show in the country.
Other top-flight music acts for this year’s rally include the Hank Williams, Jr., tribute band All My Rowdy Friends and country music sensation Craig Campbell; both play the Budweiser Main Stage on Thursday night. And on Saturday evening, Blizzard of Ozzy, the country’s preeminent Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne tribute band, and 80s hard rockers Warrant will be bringing it to the people.
Expect performances by the International Bikini Team as well, heavy competition in the Cycle Source Ride-In Bike Show, Ride and Rodeo; the Parade of Chrome; and that perennial crowd-pleaser, the GBW wet T-shirt contest. One, two and four-day passes are available here.
And, of course, no rally would be complete without great riding, and Gettysburg has some of the best. Whether riders want to see historic battlegrounds or just hit the road for a great cruise, hundreds of miles of the best riding in the East surrounds Gettysburg. In addition to fantastic solo riding, GBW also features awesome group rides and the Pink Journey of Lights and Stars of Hope Charity Rides.
Pricing for Gettysburg Bike Week is as follows:
$40 per-person 4-day passes, available online and at the gates.
$25 per-person 2-day passes, available online and at the gates.
$15 per-person 1-day passes, available online and at the gates.
New and returning riders can find updates, the schedule of events, lodging information and anything they ever needed to know about Gettysburg Bike Week by visiting http://www.gettysburgbikeweek.com.
GOOD THOUGHT FOR THE DAY–
Don’t educate your children to be rich. Educate them to be happy, so when they grow up they will know the value of things, not the price.

PROGRESS—That’s the mantra for the unrelentingly tortured Bikernet staff. Some of the members have “Progress or die trying” tattooed above their boobs.
If you’re not making progress you better be having sex or riding or drinking whiskey.
Tomorrow we will launch the new Franky ’05 Dyna Tech. Next week we will launch another tech about the Panhead project, our Sturgis efforts, the Chopper King and Eric Bennett’s Twin Cam FXR.
Fat chance I will finish them all, but we will give it hell.
In the meantime ride free forever,
