RUN READY BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for August 3, 2017

Hey,

As you know, life is nuts. Just about the time you’re packed to roll 1,500 miles to Sturgis, you’re best tire goes flat. It’s one of those glass half empty, half full omens.

Sometimes I’m pissed, but generally it means there was a problem that needed addressing. Better now than out on the road.

I know many of us are hitting the road to the Badlands, so I’ll cut this short.

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown and BorntoRide.com, Sturgis Museum.

BUILDING FOR A STRONGER FUTURE, BONNIER MOTORCYCLE GROUP ANNOUNCES RESTRUCTURING PLANS– Today, Bonnier Motorcycle Group (BMG) announced restructuring plans across all editorial and sales departments in order to deliver more specialized content and provide better solutions for the motorcycle industry to engage with enthusiasts.

Many steps will take effect immediately, which include ceasing production of Sport Rider magazine, headcount reductions and the implementation of a new company staffing model, focused on content and sales specialization.

BMG is shifting from a title-specific content and sales structure to one that empowers the editorial as well as the marketing staff to focus on one role across all BMG brands.

This is compared to the previous model where many of the 13 motorcycle media brands had their own staff members with like responsibilities. The change will better enable the Group to produce engaging content for audiences on the platform they choose, and help deliver solutions to BMG clients to sell products to the world’s largest network of motorcycle enthusiasts.

“As digital channels become more technologically driven and advertising solutions demand greater optimization, these changes will help BMG deliver more informative and inspiring content to its audiences.

“The new channel-specific approach, in addition to expanding marketing-solution options for partner brands, will also help decrease the cost-per-acquisition and increase sales for the Group’s clients,” said Andy Leisner, Vice President and Managing Director of Bonnier Motorcycle Group. “We do not make these decisions lightly, especially when reducing staff, but we’re confident these steps will serve as a stronger foundation for our future and will benefit our clients and the motorcycle industry.”

The new model will remove the boundaries between BMG departments by changing staff responsibilities from one specific brand property or department to a specialized task that serves the overall Group. In addition, the strongest people in each discipline will be empowered to manage these roles, which will improve quality of the work produced.

The Bonnier Motorcycle Group is comprised of 13 motorcycle media brands including Cycle World, Motorcyclist, Dirt Rider, Hot Bike, Sport Rider, Baggers, Cruiser, Street Chopper, Super Streetbike, UTV Driver, ATV Rider and the episodic series On Two Wheels.

We met on a dating website, became friends on Facebook , had long chats on Whatsapp. He proposed to me on Skype, and now we’ve had two months of a relationship through Viber. My beloved and favorite Dad, I need your blessing, good wishes, and a really big wedding.

Lots of love and thanks.

LETTER FROM BIKERNET STAFFER–
Dear Boss,

I think you have already found The Truth or The Enlightenment.

I can only wish to be happy and dedicated and positive like you. All I see is doomsday, World War 3, disease and misery. My morning Prozac pill isn’t working.

You build, you create on paper, you communicate with the world. I get homesick when I wake up and leave my bed. Your joy and innate nature and personality is inspiring. I wish I could be like you. You are still learning new things, exploring opportunities, carrying relationships through decades, riding, joking, informing, discussing.

Sure you disagree with a bunch of folks but you don’t hate an entire community or race or nation. You have surpassed human capacity and incorporated cosmic skills.

I really am grateful to be associated with you for so long. I sure as hell don’t have the balls to end myself. So might as well learn how to live. You are an ideal example. American Dream. American Spirit.

NEWS FROM THE HILL –
Infrastructure Package Stalled? Plus Driverless Car Bills Zoom Through Energy & Commerce

As a candidate, President Trump pitched revitalizing the nation’s infrastructure (and creating jobs while doing it) as a key priority of his agenda.

For motorcyclists, the idea of a major infrastructure revamp could be a two-edged sword. On one side, the possibility of better road conditions and more favorable riding settings; while on the other, we ‘tried and true’ MRF lifers know that the safety-crats will undoubtedly use this big package to slide in language affecting our right to ride.

Because of this, your MRF has been keeping a close watch on these discussions as they develop. However, Trump’s ambitious public works plan is fast becoming an afterthought. It remains stuck at the end of the legislative line according to the staffers I’ve spoken with on Capitol Hill. They’ve told me it’s behind a number of other ‘must dos’ including negotiations over the budget, the debt ceiling, a tax overhaul, a new push to toughen immigration laws and the seemingly never-ending story of trying to find a replacement for the Affordable Care Act.

Mr. Trump’s team has yet to produce the detailed plan he has promised to deliver “very soon.” This is despite talk from Democrats and Republicans alike that this could be an important win on his agenda. The current rumor is that we may see an outline of a plan come fall…and when this announcement does come, your MRF will be ‘at the ready’ to make sure your voice is heard.

On Thursday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee considered a bill on driverless cars. It tackled some contentious issues like balancing the roles of federal and state governments and granting exemptions from federal motor vehicle safety standards.

H.R. 3388 is one in a series of bills that the Committee is examining in its efforts to regulate this fast-growing sector. Of note, an amendment was added during Thursday’s markup, which required vehicle manufacturers to provide consumers with clear information on new cars’ self-driving capabilities and limitations.

This would address the concerns of many (including others on the road – LIKE RIDERS) that individuals who use these types of vehicles won’t know when the computers stop and they have to take over!

This type of confusion could have disastrous consequences. H.R. 3388, or the SELF-DRIVE Act was voted on 54 – 0 with no one opposing. You can review the Committee’s work below. The bill now heads to the House floor.

EXECUTIVE & REGULATORY UPDATES –
A Need for Speed

This week, the federal safety watchdog, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), released statements saying that speeding is a big blind-spot in America’s road safety efforts. To change that, it’s issuing a new set of recommendations for federal and state officials. According to the draft report released earlier this week, more than 112,500 people lost their lives in speed-related crashes from 2005 to 2014, accounting for 31 percent of all traffic deaths in America over that period. While you can read the report by clicking HERE: NTSB REPORT

Let me break it down for you…the NTSB says excessive speed kills and our federal and state officials aren’t doing enough to address the problem. So along with the report, the NTSB issued safety recommendations to the US Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Federal Highway Administration, the Governors Highway Safety Association, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the National Sheriffs’ Association. The NTSB also recommended action from seven states that prohibit automated speed enforcement, 28 states without automated speed enforcement laws, and 15 states with automated speed enforcement restrictions. So what does all that mean for riders? Better get ready to smile – I predict more speed cameras in the days ahead….

STATE NEWS –
Possibility of New Toll Roads in Wisconsin, Oregon, Rhode Island

As the summer draws to a close, our partners at the Americans for Toll-Free Interstates have been steadily working to oppose tolling expansion at the federal and state levels. And though tolling efforts have slowed slightly due to the summer lull, Oregon, Wisconsin and Rhode Island have managed to stay busy…

Oregon’s transportation bill has a provision implementing variable tolling on some major freeways within the state. For those that don’t know, variable tolling means charging a higher price to get on the road if it’s congested. I guess Oregon riders better avoid the freeways during rush hour. Hope you like to take your rides between 10am and 3pm! And in Wisconsin, Republican senators haven’t been able to find consensus as to whether to pursue toll roads for Wisconsin’s interstates.

Like paying to ride your bike on highways? Didn’t think so. Want to do something about it?

MRF NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS –
Don’t Take No for An Answer…Seriously!

I had an exchange with a MRF member a week or so ago that I thought I would pass along. I know that many of you are getting responses back from your Members of Congress based off of letters they received from you asking them to rethink the ethanol issue, sign on to the profiling resolution, proceed with caution on driverless cars, help pass the RPM Act, etc. etc.

What I imagine most of you get is some sort of generic response that says, “be assured if this issue comes to the floor, I will keep your views in mind”

Now, the reason I know this is because I used to be a congressional staffer….and admittedly sometimes a lazy one. And sometimes in those lazy days of summer during my days on the Hill, I would simply copy and paste that generic response and send it out – signed, sealed, delivered. (and then hightail it to happy hour)

Let’s put aside the fact that I was a 22-year-old underpaid staffer who had a softball game to play and beers to drink. Instead let’s focus on what we should take away from this insider’s perspective: DON’T TAKE THIS INITIAL LETTER AS A FINAL ANSWER! Likely, a lower level staffer (like me!) wrote this. It’s a general copy and paste job. They don’t expect (nor want) you to respond. BUT YOU SHOULD. This will kick the issue up to higher level staffer (perhaps the Legislative Director) or a more Senior aide.

Also? I would demand an answer. Get them on the record as saying “I cannot sign on at this time” or “I don’t support this bill” because once you have that answer, you can do your own copy and paste job and send their response out to all of your contacts and label that elected official as NOT BIKER FRIENDLY. We’ll see how he (or she) does in their next election…because remember….BIKERS VOTE.

Bottom line – don’t take the initial response as a final answer…like all good things in life, we have to work a little to get what we want.

LAW TIGERS REPORT–
Newbies Guide to Sturgis 2017

It’s big. It’s a party. It’s scenic. It’s a culture. And it’s an unforgettable experience. It’s Sturgis! The 77th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is right around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited! If this is your first time, you’re in for a treat. Since Sturgis is the largest motorcycle rally in the world, it can be overwhelming. We’re here to help you out. Although it’s impossible to cover everything you should know about and expect at the rally, we’ve put together the most important bits and pieces so you can have the best time at Sturgis.

Quick History

The infamous motorcycle rally did not start out as massive as it is today. In 1938, Indian motorcycle riders in the Jackpine Gypsies motorcycle club held their first Sturgis rally, the “Black Hills Classic,” which focused solely on racing and stunts. It was a single race with only nine participants and a handful of people in the audience. Fast-forward to today and that same rally has grown into a 10-day motorcycle phenomenon, the largest motorcycle rally in the world with over 500,000 participants!

Main Areas and Events

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally offers races, competitions, concerts and constant entertainment. The events and races are divided among three zones throughout and around the city: the Sturgis Zone, the Bear Butte Zone, and the Black Hills Zone.

The Sturgis Zone is on Main Street, where attendees come to hang out and shop the huge lineup of vendors. Bars, motorcycle shops, and tattoo parlors make it a great place to spend the afternoon (or a full day) if you’re not into going to the party areas outside of downtown. Motorcycles races also happen here during the week.

You’ll find most of the concerts and entertainment held at the Bear Butte Zone. Alcohol is also served here, but the hub is close to the loud and fun campgrounds so attendees don’t have to worry about riding to and from. You can also find drag races and more motorcycle races in the Bear Butte Zone.

The Black Hills Zone offers the scenic escape part of Sturgis. Here you can explore Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, the Crazy Horse Memorial, and other natural monuments as you ride through this area of South Dakota and Wyoming. You’ll find some peace and seclusion here. It costs about $10 for admission into state parks and monuments, so bring cash if you plan on exploring these sites. And get ready for twisties!

Parking

Thankfully the parking arrangement for the thousands of motorcycles at Sturgis is simple. You can park for free on Main Street (which is blocked off for Sturgis) or at some off-site venues. The spots should be marked well, but workers will be there directing traffic. You can also park for free downtown, but make sure it’s a tow-free zone.

Weather

Daytime in August in South Dakota is hot, humid, and usually rainy. Bring breathable and lightweight attire; riders who ride in the heat often recommend a white long-sleeve shirt. But temperatures can drop at night, so bring warmer clothing options for the evenings. It will probably rain at some point also, so bring attire and gear that can keep you comfortable in rain and wind.

Atmosphere

It’s a rider fest! The environment of Sturgis has an underlying party feel (I mean, it is the largest motorcycle rally in the world!) with its concerts, anything goes attitude and bars. But it is well-patrolled and only some areas are wilder than others.

The overall purpose of Sturgis is to bring riders, whether young or old, amateur or experienced, together in a place that celebrates motorcycles and the community that surrounds them. Most of all, you will experience the incredible culture of the motorcycle world. Along with the concerts, races, vendors, you’ll see more motorcycles than you could ever imagine and meet fellow riders that have a common love for riding and adventure.

Six Tips for You

Wait a few days to buy apparel and memorabilia. Vendors often lower their prices as the days go on. If you can wait until the last couple days to buy a Sturgis t-shirt, you’ll get good deals. Gotta have a Sturgis t-shirt!

Expect admission costs and bring extra cash. Some places (like bars outside of town) charge admission to enter. We know you probably want to buy the wristband for the week since it gives you access to the major concerts and events, but it’s best to come prepared with a little extra just in case.
Watch out for cops.

Once you get to Sturgis, be careful not to roll stop signs or ride even a few miles over the speed limit. The police in town have been known to crack down on riders who are not on their guard.

Watch out for deer. We guarantee you’ll see a few.

Bring ear plugs. They’ll be useful in general to have throughout the week, but you’ll be especially glad to have these if you’re sleeping on the campgrounds when a half a million of your friends have later bed times than you!

HAVE FUN!

And by the way, while you’re there, if you’d like to share your Sturgis Story on video, contact Jackie here. Law Tigers Sturgis Stories.

Ride a lot, enjoy yourself, take pictures, meet lots of people, have fun and ride safe! Don’t forget to stop by and see the Law Tigers team…we’ll be everywhere!

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS ALWAYS OPEN–

He grasped me firmly, but gently, just above my elbow and guided me into the room, his room.

Then he quietly shut the door and we were alone.

He approached me soundlessly, from behind, and spoke in a low, reassuring voice close to my ear.

“Just relax.”

Without warning, he reached down and I felt his strong, calloused hands start at my ankles, gently probing, and moving upward along my calves, slowly but steadily.

My breath caught in my throat.
I knew I should be afraid, but somehow I didn’t care.

His touch was so experienced, so sure.

When his hands moved up onto my thighs, I gave a slight shudder, and partly closed my eyes.

My pulse was pounding.

I felt his knowing fingers caress my abdomen, my rib cage.

And then, as he cupped my breasts in his hands, I inhaled sharply.

Probing, searching, knowing what he wanted, he brought his hands to my shoulders, slid them down my tingling spine and into my panties.

Although I knew nothing about this man, I felt oddly trusting and expectant.

This is a man, I thought – a man used to taking charge.

A man not used to taking ‘No’ for an answer.

A man who would tell me what he wanted.

A man who would look into my soul and say . . . .

………..”Okay, ma’am, you can board your flight now.”

SOME MAD GENIUS CREATED A PREMIUM GIN FLAVORED WITH HARLEY-DAVIDSON ENGINE PARTS

Hope you like your martinis nice and oily.

Harley Gin
German custom bike builder Uwe Ehinger reckons that Harley fans have a thirst for all things Harley-Davidson, so he’s brewed up a premium gin that he’s marketing with recovered antique Harley engine parts soaking inside the bottles.

Ehinger’s work exhuming old motorcycles and parts has earned him the sobriquet “The Archeologist,” so that’s the name he’s applied to his gin.

Some of the included parts are 1939 Flathead camshafts from the Mexican desert, 1947 Knucklehead screw-nuts from Chile or 1962 Panhead rocker arms from South Korea.

Before buying your bottle, know this: cast parts are porous and will hold old engine oil, so go for the polished parts if you’d prefer less taste of 10W-40 and raw castings if you can’t get enough of that old petroleum.

Archeologist gin’s packaging is made using selected cardboards and colors, printed on an original Heidelberg Tiegelprinting press from 1931 to capture that period look. Waxed wrapping paper tells the story of each part’s discovery.

This unique design is completed by hand-stamped, tamper-proof seals and clenched hang-tags, each bearing the unique serial number of the engine part in its respective bottle.

With prices in Euros corresponding to $1,058 to $1,293, these bottle might stay tamper-proofed! The first run sold out, but you can place orders on the web site.

HIGHLY AUTOMATED VEHICLES AND MOTORCYCLES, PART ONE: THE DOWNSIDE–

As motorcycle riders, we’re now sharing the road with more and more highly automated vehicles.

Tesla’s vaunted “Autopilot” function makes it the best-known HAV, but quite a few new cars combine a variety of forward collision warning (FCW), automatic emergency braking (AEB), and lane-assist functions. If you believe Tesla, its advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have already prevented thousands of accidents. From Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s perspective, the glass is HAV full. But if you’re a motorcyclist, you probably see the glass as HAV empty.

On July 27, 2016, a Norwegian motorcyclist was out riding, minding her own business, on Norway’s busy A18 freeway near the city of Drammen. She was rear-ended by a guy “driving” a Tesla Model S. Although she survived the crash, she was seriously injured. I use the sneer quotes on the word “driving” because while the driver was behind the wheel, his Tesla was in Autopilot mode. The car’s sensors and software failed to identify the woman on her motorcycle as something it should slow down for or avoid.

Norway, eh? It turns out those socialist Scandinavians have a national policy that aggressively encourages electric vehicles, and Norway’s an important export market for Tesla. So I suppose it’s not that surprising that the first high-profile collision between a Tesla in Autopilot mode and a motorcyclist happened there.

The Norwegian equivalent of the AMA is the Norsk Motorcykkel Union (NMCU). They were understandably alarmed to learn that a car that’s common on Norwegian roads — and which is marketed as having an Autopilot feature — couldn’t seem to recognize a slower or stopped motorcycle as another vehicle and avoid smashing into it.

Morten Hansen, the head of the Norwegian Motorcyclists’ Union, sent a letter to Elon Musk, taking him to task for creating the false impression his cars were really capable of driving themselves.

The NMCU’s General Secretary, Morten Hansen, wrote a letter of concern to Norway’s Minister of Transportation, with a copy to Elon Musk. “It is worrying if Tesla’s ‘autopilot’ is not able to detect a motorcycle, but it is even more worrying if the driver has been duped into believing that a driver assistance system is an ‘autopilot’ that allows you to cross your arms and no longer be the driver of your car,” Hansen wrote. “NMCU is certainly not against a future of autonomous vehicles, but we are a bit concerned that manufacturers and politicians are ‘over-selling’ present technology.”

Considering that a Norwegian motorcyclist was nearly killed, I think that letter was a model of self-restraint.

The NMCU’s action also inspired the Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations and two Dutch motorcyclists’ associations to write a more stongly worded letter to the Rijksdienst Wegverkeer (the Netherlands Vehicle Authority, which is the Dutch equivalent of the federal Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and your state Department of Motor Vehicles all rolled into one).

Tesla’s European PR problem got a lot worse when the influential German weekly Der Spiegel got its hands on a research report prepared by that country’s Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) on the Tesla Model S Autopilot. Basically, Germany’s version of NHTSA concluded that the Autopilot function was nowhere near up to the task of driving on the Autobahn, where cruising speeds of 120 mph are common.

BASt went as far as to recommend to the German transport minister that the Tesla’s “type certification” be removed. The government didn’t go that far, but German Tesla owners all got a letter warning them to pay attention in Autopilot mode. The Norwegian incident, and several other high-profile Autopilot crashes (most of which did not involve motorcycles) caused Tesla to temporarily dial back Autopilot functionality; for example, the company reduced the top speed in that mode.

TRIKE REVIEW:
Harley-Davidson Street Glide Trike

I have wanted a bike since I was a kid. Once back home from the service, I traded the owner of the cottage I was living in for a Zendapp. (sp). Later I got a Honda 500 cc (I think it was). Still later, I bought a 1200 cc Sportster. I have ridden my 2014 Tri Glide almost daily. I feel like a rookie, as I can’t (not supposed) to put my feet on the ground. But it is a new experience. And I wanted to tell Greg: I am a bit of a cripple too. I am 70 y/o. But I am in love with the trike, and will ride it as long as I can.

FLORIDA RIDING CLUB–
Fury Road Riding Club (www.FuryRoadRC.com), the fastest growing motorcycle enthusiast riding club in South Florida pulls up at the Palm Beach Art, Antique & Design Center to support The Highwaymen art exhibit Saturday afternoon.

Fury Road R.C. makes appearances at charity and community events to offer awareness and bring some loud fun to all occasions. Not only did they bring some rolling thunder on wheels, their timing was impeccable. Shortly after riding out, the power went out due to South Florida’s typicalsummer weather.

“We’re full-throttle-in to see through that this story is told and to gain traction for this project,” said Adrienne Mazzone, President, TransMedia Group and Fury Road R.C. Director of Media Relations. “Meeting the real-life Highwayman Al Black and descendant Kelvin Hair is a true honor, as they are the brains behind assembly-line strategic painting.”

Over 50 years ago, The Highwaymen were before their time as impeccable collaborators of marketing and art.

With their roots in Fort Pierce dating back to the 1960s; theselandscape artists strived to sell their works along the highway to the stream of tourists coming to The Sunshine State. Now a major feature film,’The Unknowns — Talent is Colorblind,’ is in the works coordinated by Producer, Walter T. Shaw.

Fury Road Riding Club rides all over South Florida promoting charities and events such as this historically inclined project and hosts an All-Riders-Welcome Bike Night on Tuesdays at Buffalo Wild Wings, 1219 South Federal Highway, Rivertown Square, Deerfield Beach.

MRF Friends and Supporters–

I wanted to quickly pass along some information that I hope you will find useful and somewhat helpful as it pertains to our concerns over autocycles.

We have discussed the need to differentiate AUTOCYCLE from MOTORCYCLE for the past several months. With the rise of autocycles on the road, so has the incidents of crashes and unfortunately, many of these crashes have been categorized under motorcycle due to an outdated definition of the term. As a result, we believe motorcycle crash rates are inaccurate.

Your MRF has been working with NHTSA as well as the Department of Transportation and our elected officials to identify a solution to this problem. We identified confusion at the state level and the need for consistency to separate autocycles from motorcycles. I’m pleased to report that several of our recommendations were included in recent guidelines released by the federal government. Though of course, not everything was included….read more below:

The Model Minimum Uniform Crash Criteria (MMUCC) are voluntary guidelines that provides States and localities with information about data elements collected at the scene of a crash and included in the State database. The 5th edition of these guidelines was recently released and there were several new elements that were added:

In crash reports, under Motor Vehicle Body Type category, they have added distinct categories for 2 wheeled motorcycles, 3 wheeled motorcycles AND autocycle (see attached).

They have added a definition for ‘autocycle’:
Autocycle – A large motorcycle with one rear
wheel and two front wheels, with either a saddle and handlebars or seat(s) and a steering wheel, that can be fully enclosed, partially enclosed, or unenclosed.

They have updated the definition of a motorcycle: Motorcycle, 2-Wheeled, 3-Wheeled – A motor vehicle with two or three wheels in contact with the ground (excluding trailers suitable for motorcycle hauling) and having a seat or a saddle for driver and passenger as well as possessing wheel rim diameters of 10 inches or more. A
motorcycle may or may not have an enclosure over the driver and passenger.

Though, it was NOT the MRF’s recommendation to refer to autocycles as a ‘large motorcycle’ we are pleased that they have separated these types of vehicles under a different category. We will continue our work to narrow the definition even further, but believe this is a good first step.

ALSO, please be aware that MMUCC guidance is VOLUNTARY and states do not have to incorporate suggestions. However, we hope that States will utilize the updated guidelines therefore encouraging greater uniformity and common definitions for vehicle crash data to make it easier to share and compare data at the local, state and national levels.

Hopefully, though far from perfect, this standardization will ensure that motorcycles are distinct from autocycles when discussing crash and fatality date going forward.

Your MRF will continue working on its long-term goal in asking legislators to also review the issue and consider potential changes/updates.

BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY, Grins and Snickers Aisle–

I was in the six item express lane at the store quietly fuming.

Completely ignoring the sign, the woman ahead of me had slipped into the check-out line pushing a cart piled high with groceries.
Imagine my delight when the cashier beckoned the woman to come forward looked into the cart and asked sweetly, “So which six items would you like to buy?”

(Wouldn’t it be great if that happened more often?)

EXILE CYCLES presents 2nd annual “Rider RoundUp at the Ranch”–

Last year Exile Cycles celebrated its 20th anniversary with a party at the awesome “Paramount Ranch Western Town” in Agoura Hills, California.

The party was such a success that Russell Mitchell has decided to make it an annual Event, and has given it a catchy name. “The location is just so cool you are guaranteed a good time!” he told us.

Just a mile from world-famous bike-hangout The Rock Store, five miles from the Pacific ocean, and right in the middle of the most beautiful riding territory in SoCal – there is just no excuse for not taking a ride out there!

This year’s “RoundUp” will be held Sunday October 15 from 11am to 5pm. Russell chose this mid-Oct slot to fill the void in the biker calendar left by the demise of the Love Ride (not to mention the fabulous weather).

This year Russell has also teamed up with Jim Gianatsis, and his prestigious “Calendar Bike Building Championship 2017” is being held at the RoundUp. Custom bikes from around the globe will be competing for trophies – and their own page in a 2019 FastDates calendar. Enter your bike at FastDates.com.

Entertainment will include live music, an eclectic mix of vendors, artisan beers, local wines, food trucks – and a ‘not-so-silent auction’. As usual, Exile Cycles will be using this Event to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the auction is a great way to score a deal on some amazing donated goodies.

Entry is $10 at gate, or $20 in advance including free Event shirt.

Hamsters USA to host annual fundraiser for special kids at LifeScape Children’s Care in Rapid City, South Dakota–

Hamsters USA, the international motorcycle group with big hearts, are at it again! Last year, they raised a record $350,000 for LifeScape Children’s Care of Rapid City through fundraising events throughout the year, bringing their fundraising total over the span of 11 years to more than $2,350,000 in support of children with disabilities in western South Dakota supported by LifeScape!

They will once again come together for their annual meeting in Spearfish, SD on August 7, 2017, hosting another amazing silent auction to again benefit children with disabilities. Funds raised will provide physical, occupational, and speech therapies, plus psychological services, to children cared for through LifeScape Children’s Care of Rapid City.

Hamsters USA has raised and donated funds at their annual meeting for the last twelve years, wanting to give back to the greater Black Hills community, which many Hamsters consider their second home. Their gifts help provide services to children in their Black Hills area homes and communities, delivered by LifeScape Children’s Care personnel who drive over 10,000 miles a month to provide services.

Mary Helen Hlucny, a five-year-old from Whitewood, SD, and her family, will attend this year’s event. Mary Helen, a young lady whose smile lights up a room, was born 13 weeks early to parents, Cris & Ana. Ultrasounds done at one-week-old showed “holes” in her brain, and when she was eight months old, they received an official diagnosis of spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy.

The Hlucnys are proud to be ambassadors for LifeScape at the Hamsters’ event this year and look forward to thanking them for their fundraising efforts that directly impact their family.

RACE REPORT–
Team MicroBilt PRBC
–Round 9 of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Series carried us across the country to the Pacific Northwest – home to evergreen trees, fresh air, and the most “brownie batter” dirt you can find – where we races at Washougal MX Park.

Washougal has long since been known as one of the most picturesque tracks on the circuit, and besides the outstanding vistas, we also had the opportunity to witness some spectacular racing and an unusual left hand start. Round 9 also marked the return of Cheyenne Harmon to the team after recovering from broken ribs and a fractured left scaphoid that he sustained in a practice crash during Round 4 at High Point.

With MicroBilt PRBC Yoshimura Suzuki Racing back in full force, we were ready to line up and do work. Because we were finally back on the West Coast, we saw an influx of riders in the 450 class who would attempt to lay down a qualifying time fast enough that would earn them one of the 40 gate picks in the motos that would follow. 61 riders in total signed up to race in the 450 class at Washougal – that meant only the 36 fastest riders would have the opportunity to avoid the Consolation race.

Unfortunately for the team, the day did not start out quite in the right direction on the race track, with Cheyenne Harmon taking a pretty good digger during first practice and neither Cheyenne nor Ronnie Stewart qualifying for a gate pick in the Top 36.

However, in the face of challenge comes an opportunity for triumph. Although not ideal, Stewart and Harmon lined up for the 450 Consolation Race in an effort to earn their spot in the afternoon motos. Never lacking in start ability, the #606 of Ronnie Stewart was off like a rocket, launching immediately toward the front of the pack. He would engage in a battle for the lead that lasted the entirety of the race – first battling with the #251 of Kyle Gills, taking over the lead in Lap 2, followed by fending off the #154 of Brandon Scharer, the #181 of Dustin Pipes, and the #96 of Vann Martin.

Stewart would go on to win the Consolation Race by a margin of 01.848. Cheyenne was unable to qualify this round, but not for lack of effort. After being off the bike for so many weeks and not lining up for Motos since Round 3 at Thunder Valley, it takes some time for your body to readjust to not only race pace, but also the correct mental focus required to put in strong enough lap times against your competitors who are working with an extreme advantage – actual gate time.

Having to race in the Consolation Race has its benefits and its challenges. The benefits being that you have extra time on the track, which means you have a better knowledge of how the track is breaking down and shaping up, moreso than the riders who earned their gate pick in a direct transfer position.

The challenge of being in this position is that you have less time for your body to rest in between races. However, on the shaded track of Washougal MX Park, the extreme summer heat does not pose nearly the threat it did during Round 8 at Millville. Ronnie was able to the extra time to his advantage by making smart racing choices on the technical track come Moto time. Stewart would go on to finish 25th in Moto 1 and 22nd in Moto 2. After Round 9, Ronnie Stewart now sits 28th in points in the 450 class.

With the final weekend off of the season approaching this weekend, MicroBilt PRBC Yoshimura Suzuki Racing will take the opporutnity to re-group, re-charge, and come out swinging at Unadilla. Hard to believe that there are only three rounds of racing remaining in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Series, but we look forward to presenting our best results possible with an entire and healthy team.

Support the Legal Defense Fund for Victims of the Waco Tragedy– There are many unanswered questions relating to the May 17, 2015 shooting at a Twin Peaks restaurant in Waco, Texas. But what is known provides more than enough to establish that an irrefutable miscarriage of justice has occurred.

177 people were arrested without any individualized or specific probable cause. They were arrested solely based on their association with a motorcycle club, including individuals that law enforcement acknowledges committed no crimes. Each individual arrested was given 1-2 million dollar bails explicitly “to send a message”, which is a clear violation of the 8th Amendment’s prohibition against punitive bail.

A cornerstone of a free society is the idea that protecting one innocent person outweighs society’s interest in punishing the guilty. The ends do not justify the means. The issues of false arrest and excessive bail should take priority over the interests of punishing any guilty party present at Twin Peaks. The interests of the innocent are simply more important from a societal perspective.

This is not about any one motorcycle club. What happens in the Waco prosecution will have far reaching impacts on the entire culture of motorcycle clubs and the 1st Amendment issues of expression and association. And the results of the initial trials could have far reaching impacts on the remaining trials.

The Bandidos Motorcycle Club and associates have been targeted and are being prosecuted first. Time is short. Help is needed. The amount of legal resources available often equates to a better defense. The first trial is set for September, 2017.

Any motorcycle club member, motorcyclist, or individual concerned about the wider implications of the Waco tragedy can contribute to the legal defense of the first club being prosecuted by sending checks or money orders to:

USARG Inc./BMC
PO Box 58868
Houston TX 77258

Texas attorney Bill Morian has confirmed that USARG Inc./BMC is a legitimate and registered 501c3 Nonprofit, that all funds will be used strictly for legitimate purposes, and that all funds are absolutely transparent and reported.

Remember, a failure to support those being targeted only means there will be no one left to stand next to your club or loved ones when they are eventually targeted in the same way as those present in Waco on May 17, 2015.

Supporting victims of the Waco prosecution is supporting motorcycle club culture and the idea that constitutional principles protecting innocent people are far more important than the goals of the corrupt criminal justice system in Waco.

Dealers from 6 States All to Host Rides for Loretta Lynn’s Ride for Mission 22 at Tennessee Motorcycles & Music Revival–

The Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Revival announces Loretta Lynn’s Ride for Mission 22, a multi-spoked charity ride that will benefit Mission 22, a 501(C) 3 organization that provides treatment programs for veterans suffering from PTSD and TBI, while raising awareness on the tragic issue of veteran suicide.

Yesterday over 20 veterans were lost to suicide. That makes the war at home more dangerous than all of our combat missions around the world. Loretta Lynn’s Ride for Mission 22 will bring the motorcycle community together to help combat this alarming statistic and help raise funds for Mission 22.

“In addition to the motorcycle people camping at the Ranch and anyone coming in on their own, we have 21 motorcycle dealers hosting their own motorcycle rides that will all converge at the Ranch. We want to give them a real nice show with a Special Military Tribute and recognize that many of these young men and women who serve our country, often come home with turmoil and grief that leads to suicide. When I heard 22 veterans commit suicide a day in our country, I just thought this could not be true and what could we do.” – Loretta Lynn

On Sunday October 1, 2017, Loretta Lynn’s Ride for Mission 22 will consist of “22” separate motorcycle rides starting at locations from the North, South, East and West and will culminate at The Ranch. Loretta’s house band The “Coal Miners Band”, and friends will perform with an all-star line up for the participants.

“You never know what musicians will be on that stage. The Lynn family has lots of friends in the music industry that are eager to help support this worthy cause.” Carrie Repp of R&R promotions, a partner of the Tennessee Motorcycles and Music Event. “This is the first time you will see so many dealerships working together, coming together all in effort to support our veterans, it really is something special and an honor to be a part of.” Repp stated. R&R Promotions is a specialty agency with decades of motorcycle event promotions and deep ties to the national motorcycle family.

Riders will choose their preferred “Ride Host” start location from the event website and for a donation of $50.00 (which will go directly to Mission 22) will enjoy the ride, a day pass to all the festivities at The Revival, lunch compliments of Mission BBQ, and enjoy entertainment highlighted with a special Military Tribute at Loretta’s Roadhouse. Each Ride is limited to 50 people per location, so those interested are urged to sign up early.

“We are very excited and want to sincerely thank Mrs. Lynn, her family, and the wonderful group of artists and musicians who will be coming out to entertain to help make this our most special and important fund-raiser of the year,” says Mission 22 Executive Director Sara Dawdy. “The work we do via Mission 22 is invaluable to our veterans.”

“I was living in the past so long it consumed me. Being able to function and be present enabled me to do other things I have not been able to do in years. After six months in Mission 22’s Endobiogeny program, I lost 30lbs, had reduced migraines, lower anxiety and cholesterol levels, and better sleep.” From mission 22 veteran Brad: Sergeant in the Infantry. “We work hard every day to offer exactly what Brad has benefitted from to all our veterans.”

More detailed information including band and musician line-ups, music and motorcycle-related entertainment, Loretta’s Mission 22 Charity Ride and plenty more can be found at www.motorcyclesandmusic.com be sure to follow Tennessee Motorcycles and Music on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter

ELK RIDGE CAMPGROUND STILL HAS CAMP SITES—
Don’t miss this chance to camp out in peace.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY, ENGLISH DEPARTMENT SHORT WORD OF THE DAY—
Dorp: 1. a village; hamlet.

QUOTES

Hanover is bare and at times very cold in the winter; but, in the summer, when the willow trees along the water furrows that line the streets, and the fruit trees in the gardens about the white houses, are green, the little dorp is, of all small towns I have seen, by far the most beautiful.
— S. C. Cronwright Schreiner, “Some Arachnids at Hanover, Cape Colony,” The Popular Science Monthly, December 1902

ORIGIN

Dorp means “village” in Dutch and is closely related to Old Norse, Old English, and English thorp “farmstead, hamlet, village,” and German Dorf (which may bring a smile of amusement to or elicit a snort of contempt from former GIs). Dorp occurs in the name New Dorp, a neighborhood on Staten Island (one of the boroughs of New York City), a derivation of Dutch Nieuw Dorp “New Village.” Dorp entered English in the 16th century.

SHOCK JEWELRY BY HEATHER NEW AT The Flying Piston Builder’s Breakfast–
Sturgis Breakfast for Vets with PTSD

Canadian, Heather New, of New-line Engraving engraved a set of shock rings and cups using Byzantine architecture, Greek mythology, and ancient Greek art as an inspiration. The proceeds of the silent auction at the Sturgis Breakfast goes to Motorcycle Missions, Vets wia nonprofit that helps Vets with PTSD.

But wait, there’s more… Meet the builders in the Michael Lichter exhibit at the Buffalo Chip and many of the builders you have read about in the Cycle Source Magazine articles.

Heather made the midnight black shocks supplied by Suspension Technologies really pop.

Only Available at the Sturgis Charity Breakfast for Vets with PTSD

What is cool about this silent auction piece is the value of the prize is $1,200+ if you bought the shocks and engaged New-line with the engraving. This is the first place you can buy a set of Custom Shock Jewelry!

Heather makes it sound so easy to do the engraving. But like most things, the art is in the details.

Start with clean & bare metal.
Sturgis Breakfast for Vets with PTSD

Paint the rings and cups white, then draw directly onto the piece.
Sturgis Breakfast for Vets with PTSD

Make deep cuts around design.
Sturgis Breakfast for Vets with PTSD

Remove the background and apply gun blue. (This turns the entire piece black)
Sturgis Breakfast for Vets with PTSD

Polish the finished pieces / The textured background remains black.
Sturgis Breakfast for Vets with PTSD
With & without Gun Blue

Working with Heather is a snap. Send the part to be engraved stripped and without chrome. Artwork is done after pieces are received, and just prior to engraving.

Standard turnaround time is 6-8 weeks; however, that can change depending on her current work load and of course, she is easily bribed with chocolate.

Sturgis Breakfast for Vets with PTSD
Turn around time is 6 – 8 weeks
In in Sturgis on Sunday between 9:30AM – Noon

So if you are in Sturgis on Sunday at 9:30AM, stop on by the Buffalo Chip for the Flying Piston Builder’s Breakfast to help a vet and fuel up with some people fuel.

About the Flying Piston Builder’s Breakfast

The Flying Piston Builder’s Breakfast is a fund raiser with the proceeds going to vets with PTSD. The breakfast kicks off the first Sunday of the Sturgis rally on August 6th at 9:30am in the Buffalo Chip.

A silent auction produces the greatest part of the fund raising efforts. This year we have something special from New-line Engraving and Suspension Technologies shocks.

MRF ALERT–
In case you missed it, yesterday a call to action went out concerning EPA’s latest activity with regard to ethanol.

EPA’s recently released 2018 proposal calls on refiners to blend 15 billion gallons of conventional renewable fuels like corn ethanol in 2018, adhering to the statutory requirement and unchanged from the final 2017 renewable volume obligation (RVO) rule. In addition, EPA is proposing to lower the cellulosic ethanol requirement to 238 million gallons in its 2018 rule.

While this is a positive step forward, it signals that now could be the time to pressure the Agency to ENSURE that our motorcycles are protected by ALWAYS requiring E0 or E10 options at the pump AND provide for more consumer education to ensure misfuelling does not occur.

Yesterday, the Agency conducted a hearing, where your MRF provided written testimony.

Let’s keep this momentum – please use our ENGAGE software to send comments to the EPA. The letter is already drafted and just needs your name and information.

You can do so by clicking here:

WRAPPING IT UP—
I woke up this morning to a power-outage in our building. Then FedEx arrived with a new shipment of 5-Ball Leathers, the bookkeeper arrived and the muralist.

I’m still packing and loaded the bikes yesterday. That was interesting and Brad serviced our Kendon Trailer. He discovered a damaged spare mounted under the trailer. If the trailer hit anything the spare was the first thing to be damaged. Ouch. I modified the trailer and threw the spare in the van. I also repaired and modified the ramp. It’s working like a champ.

Carlos worked on the Bikernet/Wilmington Mural effort in the blistering sun, but can’t think about it. It’s time to hit the road.

Hope everyone has a blast on the road this week. We will bring reports from the front.

Ride Free Forever,

–Bandit
