STURGIS RUN BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for August 2, 2018

Hey,

It’s Sturgis Run week. The brothers, sisters, and the industry are headed to the Badlands for all the action, the parties and the shows.

James the tile man came by yesterday to give me a bid on refurbishing a bathroom downstairs. When I mentioned Sturgis he got all starry-eyed. “I need to make that run before I’m any older and can’t raise some hell,” James said.

I had a flash of the old days and today. I didn’t say anything. I didn’t want to burst his bubble. In fact, I would like him to make it at 45 and give me his impressions. We will bring you reports all week long.

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. Most recently the Smoke Out and Quick Throttle Magazine came on board.

REPORT FROM THE PRINCE–
Thanks for the shout out. Callen’s Grease and Gears is doing a good job of sharing chopper action with millennial, where they do how-to’s on stage and explain what they are doing and then pumping it out on Facebook. I’ve shared it to the Bikernet FB page numerous times.

We’ve hired them at ROT, IMS and CHEROKEE and it has been received very well.

AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame announces Class of 2018
Fans, family, industry will celebrate inductees on Dec. 7 in Columbus

The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame will welcome six new inductees in the Class of 2018 on Dec. 7 at the Hilton Columbus/Polaris in Columbus, Ohio.

The 2018 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will officially induct four-time AMA National Enduro Champion Terry Cunningham, stunt rider Gary Davis, flat track and road racing tuner Skip Eaken, MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden, flat track racer Clifford “Corky” Keener, and pioneering motorcyclist Mary McGee.

“The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Class of 2018 recognizes greatness in racing and ambassadorship, whether on the track, at the mechanic’s bench or in the court of public opinion,” said Ken Ford, a member of the AMA board of directors and chairman of the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation board. “In their own way, each of these individuals has advanced motorcycling for generations of motorcyclists, and we’re honored to recognize them this Dec. 7, and in perpetuity, as inductees into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.”

The induction ceremony is part of the 2018 AMA Legends & Champions Weekend, Dec. 7-9. The AMA Legends & Champions Weekend also includes the 2018 AMA Championship Banquet at the Hilton Columbus/Polaris on Dec. 8, and an open house and formal installment of Hall of Fame honors at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in Pickerington, Ohio, on Dec. 9. In addition, AMA Racing and Recreational Riding Commissions will meet to discuss rules governing amateur racing at the annual AMA Congress, also at the Hilton that weekend.

Tickets for AMA Legends & Champions Weekend will be available soon at www.americanmotorcyclist.com.

Reservations at the Columbus Hilton/Polaris are available now at a special group rate at the following link: www.hilton.com/en/hi/groups/personalized/C/CMHPOHF-AMOTOA-20181205/index.jhtml. Guests also can call (614) 310-2229 and reference the group “American Motorcyclist Association” or “AMOTOA.”

The Columbus Hilton/Polaris is an amenity-packed, award-winning hotel located adjacent to Columbus’ expansive Polaris Center on Columbus’ north side. A complimentary shuttle serves a 5-mile radius, which includes Port Columbus International Airport. It features a day spa, a fitness center, indoor pool and whirlpool.

The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame was established in 1998 by the AMHF to honor the legends and heroes of American motorcycling and highlight their achievements and contributions to motorcycling. Hall of Fame inductees represent eight areas: Ambassadors/Industry, Design/Engineering, Dirt Track, Leadership/Advocacy, Motocross/Supercross, Off-Road, Road Racing and Specialty Competition.

For more information about the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame and the 2018 induction ceremony, see www.motorcyclemuseum.org.

AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Class of 2018

Terry Cunningham

Terry Cunningham is a champion off-road rider who played a significant role in the growth of off-road racing in the United States in the 1980s. His efforts anchored the success of the Husqvarna Motorcycle Company throughout the decade.

The four-time AMA Grand National Enduro Champion faced off against some of the greatest riders in America during his career, including AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers Dick Burleson, Randy Hawkins, Larry Roeseler, Scott Summers and Jeff Fredette. Cunningham won the title in 1982, and then again in 1984, 1985 and 1986.

His other awards included six International Six Days Enduro gold medals and a silver medal. He also was a member of the American 1982 ISDE team that finished second overall against the best off-road riders in the world.

Gary Davis

Gary Davis, from Auburn, Calif., has spent more than 30 years in show business. He performed, coordinated and directed stunts in more than 280 films, 250 television episodes and 190 commercials. His longtime contributions have showcased the thrills of motorcycling to millions through the reach of Hollywood.

Some of Davis’s more notable credits include “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Against All Odds,” “Terminator 2,” “Independence Day,” and “Spiderman 2.” His credits go back decades — to the 1977 Evel Knievel film “Viva Knievel!”

Davis’ motorcycle career began as an AMA professional dirt-track racer in 1969, riding alongside notables such as Hall of Famers Kenny Roberts and Gary Scott.

Davis soon shifted to showmanship, however, and he began exhibition motorcycle jumping in 1971, setting aside his racing career. In 1972, he entered the Guinness World Records for clearing 21 cars, bettering Knievel’s 19-car mark. After three years of jumping and more than 300 public jumps, he began doing stunt work.

Skip Eaken

Skip Eaken was a motorcycle racing tuner from Lodi, Ohio, who began building competitive and reliable flat track racers in the 1970s. He notched his first Grand National victory in 1983 with Ted Boody riding a Eaken-prepped Harley-Davidson.

Eaken is best known as the mechanic who worked on AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Bubba Shobert’s factory Honda motorcycles in the 1980s, when Shobert won three AMA Grand National Championships, collecting an AMA Superbike title and 28 Grand National flat track wins.

After Honda scaled back its factory racing programs, Eaken continued tuning flat track and road racing motorcycles in Indianapolis until his passing in 2012.

Nicky Hayden

Known as “The Kentucky Kid,” Nicky Hayden, of Owensboro, Ky., was a force on the American motorcycle racing scene before taking his talent to the world stage, ultimately winning motorcycle racing’s grandest championship, the FIM MotoGP title in 2006.

Born in 1981, Hayden raced flat track and road raced Yamaha YSR50s and then Honda RS125s as a youngster. With the full support of his family, especially parents Rose and Earl Hayden, Nicky Hayden’s story was a classic tale of an American grassroots racer accelerating through the ranks. In 1997, he capped his amateur career with the first-ever AMA Horizon Award, presented for his triumphs in flat track. The award signified that Hayden had proven himself to be the amateur racer with the brightest potential for continued success in the pro ranks.

With the Horizon Award in hand, the “Kentucky Kid” turned pro at the age of 16. As a professional, Hayden competed in the AMA Grand National Championship, the pro flat track series, as well as in AMA Pro Road Racing.

He signed with American Honda in 1999 to race the AMA 600 Supersport class, winning the 600cc championship that same year. Honda moved Hayden to the factory AMA Superbike team in 2000, and in 2002 he captured the AMA Superbike Championship. At age 21, Hayden became the youngest champion in the history of AMA Superbike racing.

Hayden then moved to the Repsol Honda MotoGP effort for 2003, earning his first MotoGP win at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif., in 2005. He won there again in 2006 while on his way to winning the MotoGP World Championship.

Hayden moved to the factory Ducati team in 2009, returning to Honda in 2014. He began racing in the FIM World Superbike series for Honda in 2016.

Tragically, Hayden was hit by a car while training on a bicycle in Italy on May 17, 2017. He succumbed to his injuries five days later, on May 22.

Clifford “Corky” Keener

Clifford “Corky” Keener was a professional flat track racer during the 1970s. Known by the nickname “Mr. Dirt,” he worked as an electrician for General Motors Corp. while he was getting his racing career started.

He almost quit racing when his results did not improve, but he decided to stick with it and eventually became a factory Harley-Davidson rider.

Keener won five AMA Grand National races during his career. He raced during a talent-filled era that often had him banging bars with the likes of AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers Kenny Roberts and Jay Springsteen. Keener raced through the 1980 season.

Mary McGee

Mary McGee was among the first women to race motorcycles in motocross and road racing events in the United States.

McGee was introduced to auto racing by her husband, Don, in the 1950s. In 1957, she learned to ride motorcycles on a 200cc Triumph Tiger Cub she bought from a friend and later took up motorcycle road racing to try to improve her car racing skills.

Switching to dirt riding in 1963, McGee started her off-road career by riding a 1962 250cc Honda Scrambler in an AMA District 37 enduro. She began riding Baja events in 1967 and, in 1975, rode solo in the Baja 500.

Also during the 1970s, McGee worked for Motorcyclist magazine and joined editors Jody Nichols, Brad Zimmerman and Rich Cox for a 24-hour road race in Las Vegas, in which the team changed riders every hour on a 650cc Suzuki.

In more recent years, she has returned to competing in select vintage races, while speaking out in support of women racers and recreational riders getting started in motorcycling.

BIKERNET™ BAD JOKE LIBRARY ALREADY OPEN–A Harley Biker is riding by the zoo in Washington, DC when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion’s cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the collar of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents.

The biker jumps off his Harley, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch. Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker brings the girl to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly. A reporter has watched the whole event.

The reporter addressing the Harley rider says, “Sir, this was the most gallant and bravest thing I’ve seen a man do in my whole life.”

The Harley rider replies, “Why, it was nothing, really. The lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger, and acted as I felt right.”

The reporter says, “Well, I’ll make sure this won’t go unnoticed. I’m a journalist, you know, and tomorrow’s paper will have this story on the front page. So, what do you do for a living, and what political affiliation do you have?”

The biker replies “I’m a U.S. Marine, a Republican and I’m voting for Trump.”

The journalist leaves.

The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on the front page:
“U.S. MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT & STEALS HIS LUNCH”
And THAT pretty much sums up the media’s approach to the news these days!

SPOKE TO DENNIS MANNING TODAY—About his 7 Streamliner effort.

He said he’s scrambling to dive back on the salt next year with his rebuilt liner. He’s too close to the record to give up.

Valerie walked away from a high-speed crash on Lake Gairdner, Australia in March 2018. The unique design and engineering of the 7 Streamliner proved its worth, strength and durabilty

At Mile 4 his liner was tracking at 366 mph, less than 10 mph from the record and he still had a couple of miles to go.

Regarding this year, “The salt is perfect,” Dennis said. His daughter, Delvine will be back on the salt shortly for her motorcycle only speed trials event.

Dennis is working on a book about his history on the salt with John Stein, an accomplished author.

BAD COP REPORT--Stop the Government’s Aggressive Policy on Seizing Citizens’ Property

Momentum is building behind one of the NMA’s most important legislative initiatives: Enacting civil asset forfeiture (CAF) laws to prevent law enforcement agencies from seizing (and profiting from) the property of citizens – often motorists – who have not been convicted of an underlying crime. Under Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the Department of Justice has become more aggressive in promoting CAF, even in cases where a person is never charged with a crime.

On July 26th, the NMA joined 19 other civil liberties organizations such as the ACLU and The Institute for Justice in sending a letter to members of the U.S. House of Representatives urging them to adopt an amendment that would put into place the reform that is desperately needed.

Here is a link from the NMA site with the contents of that letter.

Our lobbying efforts with Talley & Associates in Washington DC are paying off on the same front. The congressman who has led the charge for national CAF legislative reform is interested in working with the NMA to build a grassroots movement to push a shared agenda to restrict the conditions under which enforcement agencies can seize property.

Be ready to act. With Congress entering a recess period until late August, this is a quiet period but we will send out another alert later this month with specific information of who to contact in Congress along with key points to be hammered home on how civil asset forfeiture policy must be amended. This is an issue that requires everyone’s involvement because under the current direction no one is immune from having property taken, due process be damned.

This is not just a current administration problem. Note in this graph from The Institute for Justice that the U.S. government dating back to 2013 has seized more property than the value of all other burglaries combined. That trend has grown and shows no signs of abating unless everyone gets vocal about the need for change.

As an example of how far wrong forfeiture procedures can go, read the cover story (The Fourth Amendment Under Attack) of the Winter 2018 issue of Driving Freedoms.

Look for our CAF action alert in a few weeks so that we can work together to accomplish a much-need goal: To effectively end indiscriminate asset forfeiture by the government.

MRF EXECUTIVE & REGULATORY UPDATES – Wheeler Speaks on Ethanol; and It’s Pleasantly Surprising!

Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler thinks he can bring together the warring factions on the Renewable Fuel Standard and forge a new deal. This is significant – we knew Scott Pruitt – the old EPA head honcho – was not a fan, but we had concerns that Wheeler would be more ethanol friendly.

This week Wheeler he told reporters that the components of the old deal needed some updating. He thinks he can bring everyone together and if not make them all happy, then at least “make them all upset in equal amounts” (that’s MY LINE for the record).

Wheeler continued on to say, “I’ve worked on the RFS program for 20 years, I’ve worked with all the groups before. I’m talking to everybody, I’m trying to get everyone to tell me what they really need to bring them stability.” We will see what that means in the coming weeks, and make sure that RIDERS are one of the groups he talks to.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT WORD OF THE RALLY DAYS—hagridden [hag-rid-n]

adjective
1.
worried or tormented, as by a witch.

QUOTES

We are a simple people, but we are hagridden by our fear of darkness.
— Jack Whyte, The Saxon Shore, 1995

ORIGIN

The hag in hagridden has always meant “evil spirit (in female form), ghost, woman who deals with the Devil, a witch; an ugly, repellent, malicious old woman.” The noun is very rare in Middle English (hegge appears once in the 13th century, and hagge once in the 14th) and becomes common only in the 16th century as heg, hegge.

Hag is generally believed to descend from Old English hægtesse, hægtis “a fury, witch,” akin to Old High German hagazissa, German Hexe (cf. hex signs on barns, especially in Amish country), from West Germanic hagatusjon-. Hagridden entered English in the 17th century.

NEW FLORIDAY LEGISLATION– Only 49 more states to go!

Hooray for Florida!

I-95 and I-75 will be jammed for the next month or so with druggies and deadbeats heading North out of Florida, because this is the first state in the union to require drug testing to receive welfare!

Hooray for Florida! In signing the new law, Republican Gov. Rick Scott said, “If Floridians want welfare, they better make sure they are drug-free.”

Applicants must pay for the drug test, but are reimbursed if they test drug-free. Applicants who test positive for illicit substances, won’t be eligible for the funds for a year, or until they undergo treatment.

Those who fail a second time will be banned from receiving funds for three years!

Naturally, a few people are crying this is unconstitutional.

How is this unconstitutional? It’s a legal requirement that every person applying for a job has to pass drug tests in order to get the job, why not those who receive welfare?

Let’s get welfare back to the ones who need it, not to those who don’t want to work.

STURGIS HALL OF FAME NEWS–World’s Fastest Female Motorcycle Racer Valerie Thompson to be inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame

8-Time land Speed Record Holder and World’s Fastest Woman on Two-Wheels joins class of 2018 Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame inductees

Valerie Thompson will be inducted into the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame during the 78th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, a legendary ten-day event celebrating the worldwide motorcycle culture. Fellow inductees for the Hall of Fame this year include Jeff Decker, Jack Hoel, Armondo “Mondo” Porras, Marilyn Stemp and Hamsters USA.

The Sturgis Hall of Fame class of 2018 induction breakfast ceremony will be held August 8, 2018 at The Lodge in Deadwood, South Dakota, doors open at 8 a.m.

Thompson stunned the racing world at the 2016 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials with a speed of 304.263 mph (489.663 km/h) piloting the Team “7” Streamliner. On only her fifth run in a streamlined motorcycle, Thompson became the first female driver in a two-wheeled vehicle over 300 mph. Earlier this year, Thompson set a new land speed record of 328.467 mph (528.616 km/h) during the DRLA Speed Week competition at Lake Gairdner Australia where she also survived a horrific 363 mph crash during the World Speed Trials.

“It’s impossible to put into words how much this honor means to me. Looking over the list of Sturgis Hall of Famers is like a family reunion invitation list. I see friends, mentors, fellow competitors and legends dedicated to racing and promoting the sport each of us love so much,” said Thompson. “I don’t think I would be here today if were not for Jesse Jurrens, owner of Legend Suspensions. He lured me from drag racing to my first competition at Bonneville in 2005. So, I blame him for my salt addiction. I also set my first land speed record on fellow hall of famer Keith Ball’s Bikernet.com Harley-Davidson,” added an emotional Thompson.

Thompson holds eight land speed records on a variety of bikes ranging from Harley-Davidsons to BMWs to Streamliners with a personal best top speed of 328.467 mph (528.616 km/h). She is a member of seven-land speed racing 200 MPH Clubs and one 300 MPH Club. Valerie is the only female in history to compete for the world’s fastest motorcycle title.

“Valerie’s many accomplishments both on and off the track have certainly earned her a rightful place in the Sturgis Motorcycle Hall of Fame,” stated Myrick Robbins, Executive Director, Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame. “In addition to being one of the most accomplished female motorcycle racers in the world, she has always been an excellent ambassador for those of us who love life on two-wheels,” added Robbins.

“I’m tickled pink Valerie is receiving this level of recognition. She’s paid her dues on every type of racing surface and has the records to prove it. She knows no fear, delivers on her promises and is a wonderful sponsor representative. I’ve worked with the best riders in the business from Cal Rayburn to Chis Carr. Valerie ranks right up there with the best of the best,” said Team “7” Racing president, BUB “7” designer and AMA Hall of Fame member, Denis Manning.

Thompson and Manning’s Team “7” Racing plan to continue their quest for the world’s fastest motorcycle record in 2019 with the “BUB 7” streamliner.

BIKERNET GUN NUT REPORT–Fake Gun News Is Still Fake News Four Years Later

Donald Trump has made the expression “fake news” a household term. Of course, the mainstream media helps him at every turn, providing endless examples for the American people to see, ridicule and share on social media. Much fake news these days has to do with things like the Russia investigation and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. At the same time, gun owners find themselves on the receiving end of plenty of it as well.

We’ve all seen stories about the incredibly lethal .9mm pistol and spent rubber bullets. However, CBS News found something even more worrisome for those concerned about “gun violence.” Check out this story from four years ago.

Suspect killed, officer injured in Calif. shootout

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A police officer is in critical condition and a suspect is dead following an early morning shooting Friday near a Southern California nightclub, CBS Los Angeles reports.

A 31-year-old veteran officer and a new officer trainee were in an area known for criminal activity at around 2 a.m., to “check on some individuals,” said Lt. Rich Lawhead of the San Bernardino Police Department.

The officers confronted a group of five people, who had just left a nightclub, in front of a home on a dead-end street and “almost immediately shots were fired,” Chief Jarrod Burguan said.

A male suspect’s gunfire wounded the senior officer, a 6-year veteran of the San Bernardino Police Department, twice in the upper body.

…The training officer was able to return fire and wounded the suspect, who was a man in his 30s. He was also transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Seems like just another run-of-the-mill story, right? And with a happy ending, at that. If you keep reading, the fake news gem lies in the final paragraph.

An assault revolver with high-capacity magazines and a revolver were recovered at the scene.

Really. An assault revolver with high-capacity magazines. Scary stuff right there. What’s more, this utterly fake news report remains uncorrected after nearly four years.

Real news reporting requires at least a modicum of work and only a little bit of intelligence. If you didn’t know any better, you might think the whole world revolves around Putin and the 2016 elections. Democrats, CNN and the other legacy media outlets certainly think so as, rather than reporting actual news, they push their own particular agenda.

Which probably explains why CBS News has been too busy to correct this laughable report even now. Is it any wonder the American mainstream media struggles to retain their dwindling audience?

BAD GOVERNMENT–Senator demands answers on Pentagon’s $10,000 toilet seat

A top Republican senator wants to know how the Pentagon ended up paying $10,000 for an airplane toilet seat cover.
Sen. Chuck Grassley, Iowa Republican, sent a letter last month after DefenseOne,com reported on the C-5 toilet covers, which can be 3D printed for $300, but which the Defense Department had been planning to pay out $10,000 for.

“It seems to me that there is no way to justify a $10,000 price tag for a toilet seat lid. It’s just not credible,” Mr. Grassley said, asking the department’s inspector general to investigate.
In the DefenseOne piece Will Roper, an Air Force assistant secretary involved in acquisitions, described the $10,000 price tag.

He said while the actual cost of the toilet cover is relatively low, it’s not something a manufacturer regularly produces. So the company ends up halting other production to make the cover, and the government ends up paying the costs of lost production.

Mr. Grassley said the inspector general should have been on the case long ago, and he said he it “makes me wonder whether the DoD Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is asleep at the switch.”

A NEW CONCEPT–Rethinking California’s Highways as Utilities

https://www.pe.com/2018/07/28/rethinking-californias-highways-as-public-utilities/

In November, state voters will decide whether or not to repeal the 2017 state law increasing gasoline and diesel taxes. In Los Angeles, roads are in such bad shape that it costs the average driver $892 a year in additional vehicle wear and tear. Nationally, 25 percent of all U.S. highway bridges are either too narrow or structurally deficient, and chronic traffic congestion costs Americans $160 billion per year in wasted time and fuel.

Fuel taxes were sold to the public last century as “highway-user fees.” And originally, they were used solely to build and maintain highways. Yet that is far from the case today. Nearly one-fourth of all federal fuel taxes are used for non-highway purposes, and it’s worse than that in some states. In California, over the next 30 years, $18 billion of state gas-tax money is pledged for paying off bonds issued to build Gov. Jerry Brown’s high-speed-rail boondoggle.

It’s not hard to see that there is something fundamentally wrong with the way we fund and manage the highways we all depend on. Highways are one of our basic public utilities — along with water, electricity, natural gas, telephones, etc. Yet we don’t have huge political battles over how to pay for those utilities. Every month you get a bill from your electric company, water company, phone company, and satellite or cable company. You pay for the specific services you used, and the money goes directly to the company that provided those services.

Highways need to be financed and operated as utilities, rather than as politicized, state-owned enterprises. That means each highway needs an owner. Highway customers should pay their highway bills directly to that owner, based on how much they use the roads and how damaging their vehicle is to the pavement. The owner should assess the need for new links or more lanes, and finance the construction by issuing long-term revenue bonds. Of course, as with any other major construction projects, they should have to comply with existing planning and environmental regulations.

This might sound like a libertarian fantasy, but it’s a model with a long history that stretches into the present day. Private turnpikes were the main inter-city roadways in 18th and 19th century Britain — and 19th century America. After WWII devastated Europe, three countries — France, Italy, and Spain — developed their major highway networks as investor-owned toll roads. Highways there remain very similar to our electric-utility franchises today. Companies bid for a long-term franchise to build and operate a particular highway, subject to the terms and conditions of a long-term contract called a concession.

It has taken a couple of decades for this to catch on in the United States, with the first two projects — the 91 Express Lanes in Southern California and the Dulles Greenway in Virginia — opening in 1995. Since 2000, investor-funded toll projects worth $36 billion have been financed, primarily in Colorado, Florida, Texas, and Virginia. Highways are being upgraded with all-electronic toll systems and resurfacing, while some added lanes and better service plazas, among other things.

If done right, a shift from politicized highways to customer-friendly highway utilities could address the American system’s major shortcomings. Highway owner/operators have strong incentives to properly maintain their facilities so that customers willingly pay to use them. With per mile toll charging, they have reliable, bondable revenue streams that make it possible to finance large-scale reconstruction, widening, etc. when it’s needed, not someday in the future when the money is somehow cobbled together.

Continuing the status quo is untenable. The federal highway-funding system, which now depends on tens of billions in “general revenue” each year to supplement dwindling fuel-tax revenue, is not sustainable. State governments are poorly positioned to take up the slack since the majority of them have massive unfunded liabilities in their public-employee pension systems that will restrict their spending for decades to come. And the gas tax system is running out of steam, as conventional engines go twice as far on a gallon of gas and electric and other propulsion sources get set to become mainstream in coming decades.

The transformation of highways from state-owned enterprises to highway utility companies won’t happen overnight but it is possible — and sorely needed.

BAD GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT–Federal Jury Convicts Former VA Field Examiner and OPM Investigator Kenneth Richard Devore of Fraud

On July 25, 2018, following a six-day trial in U.S. District Court, Kenneth Richard Devore, 44, of Jonesborough, Tennessee, was convicted of wire fraud, mail fraud, financial conflict of interest, theft of public money, and making false statements in matters within the jurisdiction of the United States.

Sentencing is set for 10:00 a.m., November 5, 2018, before the Honorable Judge Pamela L. Reeves in U.S. District Court in Greeneville. Devore was detained pending sentencing.

Wire fraud and mail fraud both carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Theft of public money carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Financial conflict of interest and false statements both carry a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

According to evidence presented at trial, in 2015, while acting as a field examiner for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Devore schemed to defraud a disabled and incompetent veteran of over $680,000.

Under the VA’s Fiduciary Program, field examiners are employed to help protect the financial assets of veterans who are unable to take care of themselves. As such, field examiners conduct on-site fact-finding examinations to ascertain the veteran’s income and assets and to observe his mental condition, living arrangement, and social adjustment.

While assigned to a disabled veteran in Knoxville, Tennessee, Devore used his position to convince that veteran that he needed a Last Will and Testament (will). Devore then drafted the will and deceptively inserted his own name as the sole beneficiary of the veteran’s financial bank accounts and investments, which totaled over $680,000. Devore falsified the victim’s initials on the will and mailed it to his legal guardian, Regions Bank.

As a result of his conduct, Devore was forced to resign from the VA. Shortly thereafter, in early 2016, he applied for a position as an investigator for the National Background Investigations Bureau, an agency within the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) that conducts investigations for positions of public trust and security clearances.

In his application for the job and security clearance, he lied about his own educational and employment history, intentionally withholding that he had been forced to resign from the VA for misconduct and falsely claiming that he had received a college degree from the so-called “Canterbury University.” By his misrepresentations and omissions, Devore was hired for the job and worked through 2017.

Additionally, in 2009 and 2010, Devore lied about his own purported disabilities in order to obtain a 100% “total and permanent” disability rating by the VA. While he claimed to be unemployed and unable to work because of service-connected ailments, he worked gainfully and almost continuously in various federal and private sector jobs from 2009 through 2017. During that period, he received monthly disability compensation from the VA to which he was not entitled.

This case was investigated by the VA, Office of Inspector General and OPM, Office of Inspector General. Assistant U.S. Attorneys David Gunn and T.J. Harker represented the United States at trial.

FACEBOOK BANS PAGES–aimed at US election interference

Facebook says it has removed 32 accounts and pages believed to have been set up to influence the mid-term US elections in November.

It said it was in the “very early” stages of the investigation and did not yet know who was behind the pages.

It said the creators had gone to greater lengths to hide their identities than a Russia-based campaign to disrupt the 2016 presidential vote.

It described attempts to erase election interference as an “arms race.”

What did Facebook discover?

The social network said in a blog that it had identified 17 suspect profiles on Facebook and seven Instagram accounts.

It said that there were more than 9,500 Facebook posts created by the accounts and one piece of content on Instagram.

In total more than 290,000 accounts followed at least one of the pages involved, it added.
Facebook said the suspect accounts had also run about 150 ads on Facebook and Instagram, costing a total of $11,000 (£8,300).

The most popular fake accounts were:
Aztlan Warriors
Black Elevation
Mindful Being
Resisters

Why can’t Facebook be sure who is responsible?

The “bad actors” went to far greater lengths to cover their tracks than the Russian-based Internet Research Agency (IRA) had in the past, Facebook said.

This included using virtual private networks (VPNs) to hide their location, and using third parties to run ads on their behalf.
Furthermore, the social network said it had not found evidence of Russian IP (internet protocol) addresses.

Many of the posts included anti-Trump messages
Some of the flagged posts would have been difficult for the public to identify as election interference

It added that it “may never be able to identify the source” for the fake accounts.

THE BIKERNET BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS NOW OPEN–The great question, which I have not been able to answer… is, “What does a woman want?”

A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon.

Four worms were placed into four separate jars. The first worm was put into a container of alcohol.

The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke

The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup.

The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil.

At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following results: The first worm in alcohol . . Dead. The second worm in cigarette smoke . . . Dead. Third worm in chocolate syrup . . . . Dead. Fourth worm in good clean soil . . .Alive

So the Minister asked the congregation, “What did you learn from this demonstration?”

Maxine was sitting in the back quickly raised her hand and said . . . “As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate, you won’t have worms!”

BRONSON BAUMAN TO RIDE BRYAN SMITH’S INDIAN SCOUT FTR750
AT BUFFALO CHIP TT–
Bronson Bauman to Get First Live Action Aboard the Indian Scout FTR750

Indian Motorcycle Racing today announced Wrecking Crew Rider Bryan Smith will miss the Buffalo Chip TT on Sunday, August 5. Rather than letting his factory race bikes sit, Smith has tapped Bronson Bauman to take to the season’s second TT race aboard the Scout FTR750.

Bauman will jump on the Scout FTR750 at a track where he finished in the top five just a year ago. This season, Bauman is still searching for his first top-10 finish, but hopes a run on the Indian Scout FTR750 is able to provide a spark and have him competing in the Main.

“I’m excited to give the Indian Scout FTR750 a run,” said Bauman. “My brother (Briar) made the switch at the end of June and has seen improvements in his finishes since. It’s only one race here, but I absolutely appreciate the opportunity provided by Bryan and the Indian Motorcycle team.”

Smith, who did not attempt to start Semi 1 at the New York Half Mile on July 7, underwent surgery on July 11 to repair screws that came loose in the leg he broke earlier this season at the Texas Half-Mile. Smith is targeting his American Flat Track return on August 7 at the Black Hills Half-Mile.

Bauman will pit at the Buffalo Chip TT in Bryan’s space, with access to his team and factory resources. Next to Bauman in will be Hayden Gillim, the “Man in a Van with a Plan.” In his first AFT race of the season, Gillim will set up with his privateer Scout FTR750 in Brad Baker’s pit area. Baker will miss the rest of the season, as he recovers from a fractured vertebra and a spinal cord injury sustained at X Games. Indian Motorcycle Racing, along with the entire racing community, are keeping Brad and his family in their thoughts and prayers.

BAD GOVERNMENT–Democrat Leader Arrested For 113 Counts Of Bribery, Money Laundering, Defrauding The IRS

Former Massachusetts state Senator Brian Joyce collected more than $1 million in bribes and kickbacks through money laundered through his law firm, Joyce Law Group. According to a sweeping 102-page indictment, Joyce was accused of running his office as a “criminal enterprise.”

Joyce lists among his accomplishments 20 years in the Massachusetts legislature, including 19 years in the Massachusetts Senate, where he was Assistant Majority Leader. While serving in the Massachusetts legislature he was Chair of the Senate Committees on Bonding, Bills in the Third Reading, Capital Expenditures and State Assets, Election Laws, Federal Financial Assistance, Housing, Public Service, Tourism, and the Special Committee to Improve Government.

He was Vice Chair or a Member of the Ways and Means, Banking, Economic Development and Emerging Technologies, Elder Affairs, Healthcare Financing, Higher Education, and the Judiciary Committees.

Yet the 55-year-old Democrat was reported to have gained more than $1 million through bribes and kickbacks, along with federal charges of racketeering, extortion, mail fraud, corruption, embezzlement, honest services fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to defraud the IRS. In December of 2017, the 55-year-old was taken into custody by the FBI at his Westport home following a two-year investigation. In January of 2018 Joyce’s accountant was charged with helping him file false income tax returns.

Acting US Attorney William Weinreb stated prosecutors launched an investigation into Joyce after a series of stories by The Boston Globe beginning in January 2015 detailing concerns with Joyce’s mingling of public and personal business.

The charges against Joyce reveal a stunning level of corruption.

Joyce chose not to run for reelection in 2016 and then moved out of Milton, his longtime hometown directly following the FBI and IRS conducting a raid on his Canton law office. The raid was precipitated by a series of stories published by the Boston Globe describing various ways in which Joyce used his public position to get private benefits for both himself and his family. Suspicions originally arose due to Joyce repeatedly receiving discounted and sometimes free goods and services, often from businesses in his legislative district.

AMA ALERT–
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The AMA joined representatives from the Motorcycle Riders Foundation and the marine and outdoor power equipment industries to outline concerns over E15 fuel (15 percent ethanol by volume) to the Congressional Motorcycle and Boating caucuses and to raise concerns about a lack of consumer education regarding the risks associated with increasing levels of ethanol in fuels.

The AMA also signed a joint letter that went to each member of the U.S. House and Senate in support of the Consumer Protection and Fuel Transparency Act of 2018 (H.R. 5855), which would require the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to revise labeling requirements for E15 fuel pumps and initiate a consumer education program about the risks of using fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol by volume in vehicles and machinery not designed for it.

Wayne Allard, AMA vice president of government relations, addressed the Congressional Motorsports Caucus on July 25, along with other representatives from the motorsports world. Allard discussed the importance of passing the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports (RPM) Act, which clarifies that it is legal under federal law to modify the emissions system of a motor vehicle that is converted for race-use only.

Joining Allard were motorsports facility owners, automotive racing team owners, SEMA, NHRA Pro Stock racer Alex Laughlin and Feld Entertainment. The event was moderated by Tim Frost, the publisher of National Speedway Directory.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Trump Administration has announced plans to end a special waiver that allows California to regulate vehicle emissions. Reports from Bloomberg and Reuters said ending the waiver would eliminate California’s stricter vehicle-emissions standards and cap federal fuel economy requirements at 35 mpg, rather than allowing them to rise to 50 mpg by 2025.

The EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also are expected to propose barring California from setting its own fuel economy rules. Thirteen states and the District of Columbia have adopted California’s stricter emissions standards, accounting for nearly 40 percent of U.S. car and truck sales.

Ride Well with Biltwell–California based Biltwell is more than just a great helmet company, with great design and great branding – it delivers carefully thought out, well specified ergonomic, feature-rich products that genuinely enhanced the riding experience …

Riserless ‘bars for XL

Well known for its Tyson Risers, this Tyson XL handlebar is a riserless T-bar “that takes high-tech construction and rider comfort to the next level.”

The innovation begins with Biltwell’s exclusive butted and tapered 1-1/8-inch O.D. four-bend handlebar with 1” grip areas. This bar is TIG welded to 1-1/4-inch O.D. uprights in three sizes: 10, 12 and 14 inch rise. TIG welded 1/2 x 13 t.p.i. bungs on 3.5” centers inside both uprights let the handlebars mount to select H-D and aftermarket top trees with removable bar risers.

The right-side bar end is notched to accept H-D’s TBW module, and the bar is slotted on a CNC mill to accept internal wire routing.

Made in 0.120” wall (3 mm) seamless 4130 chromoly material throughout they are precision mitered with TIG welded joints and bungs for strength.

They are also available as non-TBW designs – with slots in the handlebar to accept internal wire routing inside the bar/underneath the lever clamps. They are available in a choice of electroplate or show chrome finishes.

Alumicore Grips

Biltwell says its AlumiCore grip system is a radical departure from the brand’s classic ‘less-is-more’ aesthetic and takes high-performance hand controls for Harley-Davidsons to the next level.

“The technical revolution starts with a forged and CNC lathe-turned 6061 T-6 aluminum tube. After precision machining and surface detailing, a Thermoplastic Vulcanizate (TPV) rubber sleeve is installed over the tube’s knurled surface for traction and comfort. This highly UV-resistant material is soft and comfortable, yet extremely durable.

“The right (throttle) side AlumiCore grip comes in two styles: 1 inch I.D. for select stock and aftermarket 2-cable H-D throttles, and another for H-D Throttle-By-Wire technology. The internal gear interface inside the AlumiCore grip for TBW is forged (not simply glued and screwed) into the grip’s aluminum sleeve, so it will never break or disengage from the TBW module’s gear interface.

“The throttle grip’s machined end cap is removable to make changing and replacing the TPV rubber sleeve fast and easy. The clutch side AlumiCore grip features an internal wedge system on the end cap that expands inside the handlebar to eliminate grip slip and end play.

Both grip flanges fit inside stock and select aftermarket H-D hand control pods.

They are available in black electroplate or chrome finish, with black grips sleeves. Other grip sleeve colors are also available for replacement or customizing.

JUST OFF THE BENCH AT THE MONTANA WATCH COMPANY–A few years back Jeffrey created what would become one of our most sought after custom designs.

The Officer’s Watch 41mm Argentium Silver case was hand engraved by Christian DeCamillis in a deep relief of Western Scrollwork design in a tight swirling structure. The solid gold dial was also hand engraved to reveal a pattern of oak leaves and acorns that perfectly framed the clients initials dead center of the dial.

The 18 karat gold corona style crown was set with a elegant deep blue AAA sapphire. And today – it is finished with a beautiful individually hand stitched and tooled western strap by Clint Wilkinson that is attached to the elegant solid gold curved crossbar and post lug system.

When we explain to people what it is we do really well here at MWC – this is what we like to show them.

REBEL ON THE HIGHWAY – THE MOVIE–By now most of you reading this have heard about the movie Rebel On The Highway by Charlie Brechtel and Dennis Sanfelipo.

I have a very large collection of movies and videos that have two wheel vehicles in them, way too many to list here. I say two wheel vehicles as opposed to calling them motorcycle or biker movies because they include classics like Easy Rider (1969) Electra Glide in Blue (1973] Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (1991) but also ones that had scooters like in Beach Blanket Bingo (1965) and of course a long list of what is often referred to as B movies with actors as bikers and maybe some bikers with bit parts. Oh and “Born to Ride” starring Keith R. Ball.

While I have enjoyed all of them they were made with actors except Bandit in Born to Ride. Now we have a whole new concept of using actual motorcycle people in a motorcycle movie.

REBEL ON THE HIGHWAY stars Charlie Brechtel aka Good Time Charlie a well know motorcycle riding musician with motorcycle people and musicians that actually live the lifestyle. It is a different concept and the movie is a big hit.

When you see who is in the movie I am sure you will recognize many of the names and people in it. Yes I even have a small part near the end, But that is not why I am recommending you get a copy of this movie.

I am doing so because I think you will really enjoy watching it and can do so with your family.

It is available in DVD and Blue Ray and you can get a copy by contacting

BIKERS ARE BORN!–
The other morning riding to work I made my usual breakfast stop, I pulled out my phone and my friend Palmer from back in Virginia sent me a video. Palmer and his family owned Waugh Enterprises in Orange Virginia for years. In my opinion it was the best Harley dealership in Virginia.

I purchased four Harleys from them. The dealership was family owned and had a great atmosphere.

Back to the video, it was a clip from the movie EASYRIDERS showing Captain America and Billy along with Jack Nicholson riding bitch with Peter Fonda. In the background Born To be Wild by Steppenwolf played. I never get tired of seeing it or hearing it! As I listened I thought about my life and motorcycles and what it had all meant to me.

I work at a dealership and can’t count how many times I hear excuses for not riding. Probably my favorite or should I sat my least favorite is ” My wife won’t let me have one?”

You have got to be kidding me! You either need to grow a set of balls or get a new wife? Then I hear, “I just got tired of it?” Well if this is the case, you never were into it to begin with!

For me I have never gotten tired of it. It has never gotten old. I remember being in the 10th grade going to the library and picking up a copy of MOTORCYCLIST magazine and there was a picture of a guy sitting on a black Sportster. The fire was lit!

There have been times when my bike helped pull me through hard times mentally, but none were harder than when I lost my son Justin. He was 16 and full of life. It devastated me.

For two years that followed I was in a very dark place until one day I was sitting in the garage looking at my bike and I threw my leg over it and went for a ride. It helped the pain, the hurt was still there but it was my first step I took to get back to living. Little by little I came back, not forgetting Justin but trying again to live each day.

Harley used to have a logo that said “HARLEY-DAVIDSON, MORE THAN A MACHINE” and for me it always has been more than a machine. It is where I feel at home, it is where I find peace of mind, it is where I relax!

I believe it is either in you or it is not–as to whether or not you are a biker. If you are a biker you never grow tired of it, you never let someone tell you can’t have one!

I still get excited every morning riding to work not for the work part but for the ride part. Every ride is as fresh as the first time I ever rode a Harley.

For just a little while the BS of the world fades and it is just me, the bike and the road and I love it! A lot has changed with bikes and riding but one thing that has not changed is my enthusiasm and love for it!

So all of this is why I say BIKERS ARE BORN! You can’t make a biker. You have to have the spirit in your heart and in your soul. You may have brothers to guide you and lead the way at first but if you did not have it they would not waste their time.

What all this means to you is up to you. For me I can’t imagine not having a bike and riding. Every morning before I take off for work I thank god for giving me the ability to ride for always giving me a means to have a bike ad for giving me the best wife in the world who never nags me about the bikes or how much I spend on bikes!

That brings me to another point I have spent a LOT of money on bikes and if you asked me if I would do it all again? My answer would be “HELL YEAH!”

Until next time, RIDE!

BIKERNET WORKERS UNION DEMAND WE KEEP THE BAD JOKE LIBRARY OPEN–If women do the same job for less money, why do companies hire men to do the same job for more money?

A woman went to the doctor’s office where she was seen by one of the younger doctors. After about four minutes in the examination room, she burst out screaming as she ran down the hall.

An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she told him her story. After listening, he had her sit down and relax in another room.

The older doctor marched down the hallway back to where the young doctor was writing on his clipboard.”What the hell is the matter with you?” the older doctor demanded. “Mrs. Terry is 71 years old, has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?”

The younger doctor continued writing and without looking up said, “Does she still have the hiccups?

HOT NEWS FROM THE CLIMATE DEPOT–New York Times Getting Bolder With Their Climate Lies

Early in life I had noticed that no event is ever correctly reported in a newspaper.

–George Orwell

In today’s New York Times, they say global warming was settled science thirty years ago, the world was ready to act, and that we could have saved the planet.

Losing Earth: The Decade We Almost Stopped Climate Change – The New York Times

Even for the New York Times, this is a spectacular amount of lies packed into one article. The lead story on the front page of the New York Times on January 26, 1989 was “U.S. Data Since 1895 Fail To Show Warming Trend”

After examining climate data extending back nearly 100 years, a team of Government scientists has concluded that there has been no significant change in average temperatures or rainfall in the United States over that entire period.

Also that year, NOAA said most global warming occurred before 1919, Earth cooled from 1921 to 1979, and there is “considerable uncertainty among scientific experts”

Analysis of warming since 1881 shows most of the increase in global temperature happened before 1919 — before the more re-cent sharp rise in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. said Thomas Karl, of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C.

While global climate warmed overall since 1881, it actually cooled from 1921 to 1979, Karl said.

“In spite of all the well-publicized concern about global warming, you must understand that there is still considerable uncertainty among scientific experts about a number of critical factors which determine global warming,” NOAA administrator John Knauss said in a statement issued for the geophysics meeting.

Ten years earlier the New York Times said there is no end in sight to the thirty year cooling trend.

The report, prepared by German, Japanese and American specialists, appears in the Dec. 15 issue of Nature, the British journal. The findings indicate that from 1950 to 1975 the cooling, per decade, of most climate indexes in the Northern Hemisphere was from 0.1 to 0.2 degrees Celsius, roughly 0.2 to 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit.

Had NASA’s James Hansen been correct 30 years ago, lower Manhattan would be underwater now, and we wouldn’t have to be seeing the present stream of misinformation and lies coming from the fake news New York Times.

It is fascinating how bold the New York Times is becoming about lying to the public however. Yet there is nothing new about this practice.

THE FUTURE OF HARLEY–Howdy, y’all!

https://www.bikernet.com/pages/HarleyDavidson_Hits_The_Throttle_Hard_With_Global_Growth_Strategy.aspx

Just got this and thought I’d pass it along. Lots of “new faces” in the future! While I’m a traditional, air cooled V-Twin kind’a guy, young people are not buying Harleys, and us old duffers already have ours, so Harley has to step up their game against the Japanese, the Germans, and the Italians if they want to remain in the business. I wish them success, because I’d hate to lose an American icon.

Ride safe!

GET ON YOUR PONY AND RIDE—
Interesting news. The whole world seems in a panic over something, just when I want to put myself in neutral and take a break.

It’s tough, but I’m getting there. Remember what I said a few month ago about meditation and changing your mind. It’s tough to do, but it can be accomplished.

One aspect of some of the items mentioned above. I watched a CSPAN hearing with Andrew Wheeler last night. One Senator wanted Wheeler to promise that our EPA will be the gold standard for the world. For some reason that bothers me. Are we in a race against other countries to regulate our people more than another country.

Two issues there: One, what if Global Warming is bullshit, then you have spent millions and tortured your citizens unnecessarily. Two: Our government represents us, the people, not the planet, not competitions with other governments. I don’t get it?

See, there I go again. I’m trying to avoid all this shit and Ride, like the Stealth says.

We’re working with Roland Sands on a story about the Indians he modified for Travis’ Evel jumps in Vegas.

The Sheriff sent me these images the other day. Maybe he’s on his way to Sturgis. I wish he was buying this Panhead frame for me.

Tomorrow I will launch the story of making the Guardian of the wheel. It’s full of metal slag, brazing rod and hot nights in the shop.

Hang on, and ride free forever,

–Bandit
