THE BIG QUESTION BIKERNET WEEKLY NEWS for June 11, 2020

Hey,

The Sturgis controversy continues. The town of Sturgis had a townhall meeting this week and voted to postpone the rally. We are still waiting for the secret meeting of the officially certified and condoned rally council on Monday the 15th, which seems a tad late, but we are still biting our nails in anticipation.

In the meantime, fuck it, the Bikernet undercover outlaw team is preparing for our run to the Badlands. Rally or not we’ll be there. Hell, the Redhead just bought more whiskey. Let’s hit the news.

The Bikernet Weekly News is sponsored in part by companies who also dig Freedom including: Cycle Source Magazine, the MRF, Las Vegas Bikefest, Iron Trader News, ChopperTown, BorntoRide.com and the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. Most recently Quick Throttle Magazine came on board.

TWISTED ROAD NEWS–Rider Success Story: Q&A with L.A. Motorcyclist, Barry V.

The sky…and the roads…have no limits for Barry since he started renting with Twisted Road. Here he shares a few things he loves about riding and some of the places it has taken him.

Tell us about your riding experience. How long have you been riding, and how many bikes have you owned? How did you first become interested in riding?

I rode dirt bikes as a kid…many decades ago!!! I also had a Yamaha 250 motocross for a couple of years along with a Harley Davidson Fat Boy (in England). I only recently took my California rider’s test and have been riding non-stop on various bikes, since then.

Tell us about your experiences with Twisted Road – as either an owner, as a rider, or both. What do you enjoy most about being part of our community?

I love the freedom of choice going onto Twisted Road and selecting the type of bike to ride that exactly fits my mood. If I want to cruise around Malibu, tear it up in the canyons, toddle around town I have the choice of hundreds of different types of bikes within a fairly small radius. Renting bikes this way erases any ownership or maintenance worries…I don’t have to fork out thousands of dollars and feel regret about a bike sitting unridden, in the garage like a 150bhp ornament. I ride whenever I want on whatever I want, stress free…that’s freedom.

Twisted Road is more than just a motorcycle rental company. It is a riding community. We love to hear stories from both our bike owners and renters about their experiences on two wheels—what they have seen, eaten, experienced or who they have met. Thanks for sharing the open road with us and ride safe!

Have a great story to tell us?

ARCH Updates S&S Powered KRGT-1–Los Angeles-based ARCH Motorcycle has announced an evolution of its well-received KRGT-1 for 2020, an update to the first iteration of the bespoke production motorcycle that first saw the light of day in 2014 and was then formally launched. EPA/CARB compliant in early 2016.

The 2012 brainchild of Gard Hollinger, the owner of LA County ChopRods, and actor and avid rider Keanu Reeves, ARCH first put the KRGT-1 into production in 2014. That model was heavily revised from the 2012 prototype and featured over 200 parts created at the ARCH production facility at Hawthorne, California. Production was said to have required 300-plus machine-hours using state-of-the-art CNC and waterjet machinery – the headline news of that prototype was the proprietary design downdraft intake system which eliminates the conventional American V-twin breather assembly layout.

Continuing the ARCH Motorcycle philosophy of setting the highest possible bar in the performance cruiser category, the 2020 KRGT-1 maintains the philosophy of “simple, elegant design and performance” and features over 20 major changes involving more than 150 newly designed and manufactured components – including redesigned bodywork, upgraded suspension, ergonomic enhancements, updated braking components and safety features.

“The KRGT-1 was originally designed to realize the potential and push the boundaries of what an American V-twin motorcycle could offer,” said ARCH Motorcycle co-founder Gard Hollinger. “Our new KRGT-1 stays true to the original objective while further developing and refining the motorcycle’s design and performance elements to enhance the overall riding experience.”

Power is from the EPA/CARB-certified 124 ci S&S/ARCH engine with proprietary design K&N air filter; exhaust flow is managed by an ARCH 2-into-1 stainless steel header system and Yoshimura carbon fiber muffler. “This powertrain delivers impressive low-end torque from the first twist of the throttle.

VIRUS BUSTER RUN– Twisting the Throttle on the Economy

My name is Ben Van Leeuwarden I am the GM at Planet Chopper, we host custom motorcycle tours in NZ, the States and India. We are proud to present the Virus Buster Run 2021. The ride goes from Auckland to The Burt Munro Challenge and back again over 12 days.

We have pre-selected bars in each town for riders to meet at the end of each day. There is live music organised where possible and raffle tickets are sold for a COVID-related charity.

The purpose of this run is to twist the throttle on the economy by bringing business to New Zealand’s hard-hit restaurants, bars, hotels, motels and retail outlets.

People are free to join for the entire trip or just meet at the nominated bars. This ‘Gypsy Run’ style means that riders from anywhere in the country can join in. It’s not just for motorcycle riders though, everyone is welcome to come to the bars.

Given that international travel is not currently an option, this run gives the motorcycle community something to look forward to, bringing riders together in a new and meaningful way, helping all New Zealanders.

Human Signals from the NATIONAL MOTORISTS ASSOCIATION–Some years ago, the NMA developed “7 Sensible Signals, A guide to better driver-to-driver communications.” Among the signals were the universal thumbs up, or A-OK sign as an indication of appreciation:

It is difficult to mistake the intent of that acknowledgment. Another sensible signal, still in use today, has often created law enforcement animosity:

We still receive the occasional report of a driver being ticketed for flashing his lights to warn those approaching from the other direction of a police cruiser parked ahead. Those charges typically get thrown out when challenged on First Amendment free speech grounds. And, of course, the danger ahead can sometimes be an accident, a road spill, or other potentially dangerous conditions that other drivers should be aware of for safety reasons.

The one sensible signal that sometimes created the opposite message than intended was, ironically, the Apology. The potential for misunderstanding is one of the reasons we have since retired 7 Sensible Signals:

Imagine having someone cut you off in traffic, only to flash the V sign. Rather than “I’m sorry,” many could easily interpret that as a victory sign, raising tensions. We don’t need more road-rage incidents.

Recently while clearing out some old files in preparation for our office relocation, we came across a letter written 25 years ago to the NMA about a motorist’s international experience with hand signals. His observations from 1995 were quite interesting:

“I just returned from a trip to North Africa and learned about an additional signal that I like. While in Cairo (a city of 15 million people and 9 million vehicles), we had occasion to spend time in its traffic. Please keep in mind that there is virtually no traffic enforcement – the electric signals blink, there are no speed limits, and one rarely sees a police car. The whole time we spent there, we saw the infamous international hand signal for irritation not once. We did see another signal, though.

“We saw drivers put their left hand out their window with thumb and little finger extended, and then waggle the hand. We inquired about the meaning of this gesture, and were informed that it meant, ‘think about what you’re doing.’ I am impressed with the civility of this gesture. The response was always of a similar acknowledging nature – a wave or a toot of the horn, and never hostile.”

You are, no doubt, part of a well-traveled readership. Tell us, what unusual motorist-to-motorist hand signals have you seen, domestically or internationally, in jest or anger, effectively executed or not? And if there is a tale attached to the episode, even better. We love good stories.

BANDIT’S CANTINA BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS STILL WIDE OPEN–Nutty language this English…many a times it drives you mad/ kills you harmlessly!!!

A WORD FROM THE BIKERNET SENIOR EDITOR–Not only is there Covid… Unfortunately, I have some very personal reasons for this “post” and I’m sad obviously. In the hardest times in life we realize who our true friends are or the people who really appreciate us.

Unfortunately, some friends click “like” but don’t read until the end because it takes time to read this and when they see it’s a little long, they follow.

I decided to share this message of support for a very special person who struggled, who taught us to live every day like it were the best day ever! Now I see those who have time to read this post until the end… (I think I’ll find out).

Cancer is very invasive and harmful, even after the end of treatment, the body continues to struggle to restore damage caused by radiation / chemotherapy. It’s a very difficult and long process.

Please, in honor of a family member, or a loved one who died, and even for those who continue to fight cancer, copy and paste (without sharing) this text on your page. Then I’ll know who reads it. Please write “done” so we can see the power of unity together!

To all those who have lost someone, or are in the battle against cancer, loving hugs for each of them and their families.
Here’s to our loved ones with cancer!

TIM ALLEN ON HISTORY-
1–Here are some interesting points to think about prior to 2020, especially for my friends on the fence, like moderate Democrats, Libertarians and Independents and the never Trump Republicans and those thinking of “walking away” from the Democratic party.

2–Women are upset at Trump’s naughty words — they also bought 80 million copies of 50 Shades of Gray.

3–Not one feminist has defended Sarah Sanders. It seems women’s rights only matter if those women are liberal.

4–No Border Walls. No voter ID laws. Did you figure it out yet? But wait.. there’s more.

5–Chelsea Clinton got out of college and got a job at NBC that paid $900,000 per year. Her mom flies around the country speaking out about white privilege.

6–And just like that, they went from being against foreign interference in our elections to allowing non-citizens to vote in our elections.

7–President Trump’s wall costs less than the Obamacare website. Let that sink in, America.

8–We are one election away from open borders, socialism, gun confiscation, and full-term abortion nationally. We are fighting evil.

9–They sent more troops and armament to arrest Roger Stone than they sent to defend Benghazi.

10–60 years ago, Venezuela was 4th on the world economic freedom index.

Today, they are run by a dictator (socialist) and are 179th, and their citizens are dying of starvation.

In only 10 years, Venezuela was destroyed by democratic socialism.

11–Russia donated $0.00 to the Trump campaign. Russia donated $145,600,000 to the Clinton Foundation. But Trump was the one investigated!

12–Nancy Pelosi invited illegal aliens to the State of the Union. President Trump Invited victims of illegal aliens to the State of the Union. Let that sink in.

13–A socialist is basically a communist who doesn’t have the power to take everything from their citizens at gunpoint … Yet!

14–How do you walk 3000 miles across Mexico without food or support and show up at our border 100 pounds overweight and with a cellphone?

15–Alexandria Ocasio Cortez wants to ban cars, ban planes, give out universal income and thinks socialism works. She calls Donald Trump crazy.

16–Bill Clinton paid $850,000 to Paula Jones to get her to go away. I don’t remember the FBI raiding his lawyer’s office.

17–The same media that told me Hillary Clinton had a 95% chance of winning now tells me Trump’s approval ratings are low.

18–“The problem with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other people’s money”— Margaret Thatcher

19–Maxine Waters opposes voter ID laws; She thinks that they are racist. You need to have a photo ID to attend her town hall meetings.

20–President Trump said — “They’re not after me. They’re after you. I’m just in their way.”
Now, go Back & Read this Again like your Future Depends upon it, Because it Does.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT COVID WORD OF THE DAY–klatsch
[ klahch, klach ]
noun

A casual gathering of people, especially for refreshments and informal conversation: a sewing klatsch.

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF KLATSCH?
You usually associate klatsch “a casual party” with coffee klatsch “a casual gathering for gossiping and drinking coffee.” Coffee klatsch is a partial rendering of German Kaffeeklatsch (in English kaffee klatsch or kaffee klatch). Coffee and Kaffee need no explanation. Klatsch is informal German for “gossip, gossiping,” from the verb klatschen, of imitative origin. In German Klatsch also means “a slap, a crack (as of a bat), a clap (of the hands).” Klatsch (klatch) entered English in the 1950s.

HOW IS KLATSCH USED?
Maybe they didn’t have anything in common and that was the point, was the thing that made the klatsch interesting, hearing the various perspectives people had.

SAM SAVAGE, “KLATSCH,” AN ORPHANAGE OF DREAMS, 2019
At coffee-break time, Billy made a nice addition to our little klatsch.

BANDIT’S CANTINA BAD JOKE LIBRARY IS WIDE OPEN–Can’t believe some people are so stupid! I normally would not say that but during these crazy times I feel it’s ok.

Yesterday I went to Pet Smart to buy a bag of dog food. Already in line, a woman behind me asked me if I had a dog. I stared at her (those who know me will imagine my gaze) … Why else would I be buying dog food?

So, on impulse, I told her no, that I didn’t have a dog. I said that I was starting the dog food diet again, and that I probably shouldn’t because I ended up in the hospital the last time, but 15 pounds less!

I told her that it was the perfect diet and that all you had to do is carry the kibbles in your pockets and eat one or two every time you feel hungry (I have to mention that practically everyone in line was interested in my story).

Frightened, the woman asks me if I ended up in the hospital because the dog food had poisoned me.

I answer, of course not! I was admitted because I bent down to smell the ass of a Golden Doodle and I was hit by a truck. I thought the man behind her was going to have a heart attack because he was laughing so hard.

Meeting of the Minds 2020

It’s time to get beyond the “lockdown”

If you’re riding now, it’s because you’re as tired of the lockdown as the rest of the country, and riding is a 70 MPH exercise in “social distancing.”

Your rights as motorcyclists’ are just as important as your safety. While the world was on lockdown and “recommended social distancing,” the MRF never lost focus of the reason the organization exists – protecting the rights of all motorcyclists, even while Congress was closed.

Bikers Inside the Beltway was reluctantly canceled because Congress was closed to the public. With that, the MRF turned our focus to the Meeting of the Minds and protecting our rights beyond the lockdown. With twelve workshops, six major presentations, and a cadre of motorcyclists’ rights activists presenting, the 2020 Meeting of the Minds Conference is destined to be one of the most dynamic in recent memory. And it doesn’t stop there…

For the first time ever, event registration includes eight full meals — not box lunches, eight full meals! The Waterfront Hotel is a class act and, for the past several years, has hosted ABATE of Indiana events. You’re going to get more than your money’s worth on the 36th Annual Meeting of the Minds!

The lockdown is lifted, and we’re moving beyond it. As you’ve seen or experienced, individual rights beyond the ones the MRF diligently fights for, have been under siege since March. With that, the MRF is expecting a record number of attendees at this year’s Meeting of the Minds, September 24-27. Get beyond the lockdown; make your reservations now!

Now’s the time to use this link and register for Meeting of the Minds 2020. The hotel information is on the same page.

We will endure beyond the lockdown. However, without exaggeration, your rights, your motorcycle, and your lifestyle are under siege. The 2020 Meeting of the Minds provides you with the tools to get beyond the lockdown; see you in Indianapolis!!!

GUN NUT REPORT–
The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.

If violent crime is to be curbed, it is only the intended victim who can do it. The felon does not fear the police, and he fears neither judge nor jury. Therefore, what he must be taught to fear is his victim.

An unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it.

Fight back! Whenever you are offered violence, fight back! The aggressor does not fear the law, so he must be taught to fear you. Whatever the risk, and at whatever the cost, fight back!

That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants.

Political correctness is neither political nor is it correct. It amounts to social censorship, and the sooner we spit it out, the better.

Owning a handgun doesn’t make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician.

Blessed are those who, in the face of death, think only about the front sight.

The police cannot protect the citizen at this stage of our development, and they cannot even protect themselves in many cases. It is up to the private citizen to protect himself and his family, and this is not only acceptable, but mandatory.

One bleeding-heart type asked me in a recent interview if I did not agree that ‘violence begets violence.’ I told him that it is my earnest endeavor to see that it does. I would like very much to ensure – and in some cases I have – that any man who offers violence to his fellow citizen begets a whole lot more in return than he can enjoy.

Observe your cat. It is difficult to surprise him. Why? Naturally his superior hearing is part of the answer, but not all of it. He moves well, using his senses fully. He is not preoccupied with irrelevancies. He’s not thinking about his job or his image or his income tax. He is putting first things first, principally his physical security. Do likewise.

It appears that the murder rate inside prisons is ten times higher than that outside prisons. It must be due to all those Kalashnikov rifles that are issued to prisoners upon their incarceration.

If you don’t understand weapons you don’t understand fighting. If you don’t understand fighting you don’t understand war. If you don’t understand war you don’t understand history. And if you don’t understand history you might as well live with your head in a sack.

The consensus is that no more than five to ten people in a hundred who die by gunfire in Los Angeles are any loss to society. These people fight small wars amongst themselves. It would seem a valid social service to keep them well-supplied with ammunition.

One of the notable aspects of the democratic process is that one need not know anything about a subject in order to pass laws about it.

The only acceptable response to the threat of lethal violence is immediate and savage counterattack. If you resist, you just may get killed. If you don’t resist you almost certainly will get killed. It is a tough choice, but there is only one right answer.

One correspondent, who is into psychology, notes that in his experience people who are hoplophobes are nearly always nutty in other ways, too. Hoplophobia [fear of guns], of course, is not simply an attitude but rather an aberration in which the sufferer clings to an idea which he himself knows to be unsound, such as the idea that inanimate instruments have a will of their own or that lawbreakers abide by the law.

One cannot legislate the maniacs off the street… these maniacs can only be shut down by an armed citizenry. Indeed, bad things can happen in nations where the citizenry is armed, but not as bad as those which seem to be threatening our disarmed citizenry in this country at this time.

Weapons compound man’s power to achieve; they amplify the capabilities of both the good man and the bad, and to exactly the same degree, having no will of their own. Thus, we must regard them as servants, not masters – and good servants to good men. Without them, man is diminished, and his opportunities to fulfill his destiny are lessened. An unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it.

A smart man only believes half of what he hears, a wise man knows which half.

Already a couple of the faithful have sent in checks for a foundation memorial to the innocents who perished at the hands of the ninja at Waco. … I have been criticized by referring to our federal masked men as “ninja” … Let us reflect upon the fact that a man who covers his face shows reason to be ashamed of what he is doing. A man who takes it upon himself to shed blood while concealing his identity is a revolting perversion of the warrior ethic. It has long been my conviction of a masked man.

According to Herodotus, the ancient Persians felt that what was necessary in the background of a young man entering adulthood was his ability to ride, shoot straight, and speak the truth. Perhaps we should now grant our college degrees to young men who measure up to that standard.

The rifle is a weapon. Let there be no mistake about that. It is a tool of power, and thus dependent completely upon the moral stature of its user. It is equally useful in securing meat for the table, destroying group enemies on the battlefield, and resisting tyranny. In fact, it is the only means of resisting tyranny, since a citizenry armed with rifles simply cannot be tyrannized.

What are we going to do if citizens are disarmed, and the government doesn’t obey its own laws?

If you find yourself under lethal attack don’t be kind. Be harsh. Be tough. Be ruthless.

Ride to Work Day – 15 June 2020

FEMA’s NEWS UPDATES–This is a news update from FEMA, the Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations.

FEMA’s mission is to promote riders’ interests, to defend riders’ rights and to protect and preserve motorcycling throughout Europe and globally.

Why banning ‘loud’ motorcycles will not work in Tirol

FEMA’s Dolf Willigers looks at motorcycle bans in Austria, and points out some flaws in the research that led to some drastic consequences for motorcyclists. From 10 June 2020 to 31 October 2020 some well-known roads in Austria will be closed to all motorcycles with a registered standing sound emission of more than 95 dB (A).

Is there finally a safer alternative to cable barriers?

Let’s not fool ourselves: no crash barrier is really safe for motorcyclists, but smart designers are able to think of barrier systems that could improve motorcyclists’ safety. FEMA talked to Roberto Impero, general manager at SMA Road Safety, the Italian company that developed and produces the Andromeda barrier, a so-called ‘smart barrier’.

FEMA supports the motorcycle industry’s call for European help

The motorcycle industry wants to be able to sell Euro 4 bikes after 31 December 2020. ACEM, the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers, has asked the European Commission to extend the time to sell Euro 4-compliant motorcycles because of the COVID-19 situation. FEMA supports this request.

Motorcycles will be the logical choice after Coronavirus

If we have to believe the experts, travelling will never be the same again. Even when the COVID-19 virus itself is under control, we have to take into account that the risk of contamination or a new wave of the pandemic for a long time, if not forever. For personal transport, powered two-wheelers will be the logical choice after Coronavirus, says FEMA’s Dolf Willigers.

Thank you to all the motorcyclists that have made a donation to FEMA recently. We are very happy to see that so many of you support our work for European motorcyclists.

CRAZY NUTS—Life is so full of twists and turns. Ya got to remember that every turn can become a positive one. There’s always a way to get to the next adventure, if you keep your mind wide open to alternatives.

In the next couple of days, we will launch a tech on Zack’s new/old Sporty. We added an S&S Mini air cleaner.

I’m also working on a story about the best Swedish stock reproduction frames and Dr. Hamsters Pandemic. It’s cool.

I’m about to wrap up my first book for reprinting. I need to figure out who printed it. I need to share with you some of the cool stuff we’re doing in Deadwood.

I will next week. The guy who ordered the door fucked up or the manufacturer did. After waiting two months it came in facing the wrong direction. Natch, the guy didn’t check it before installing my cool porthole.

Hang on for next week. In the meantime, ride fast and free forever.
