This is one of the close-ups of the new diamond cut engines BDM is supplying for the new blacked-out K-9.

Big Dog Motorcycles Closes 2007 Model YearWith Limited Edition K-9

Limited to 100 units, the special chopper-style cruisers are stretched out, blacked out, and individually hand signed and numbered

The individually numbered bikes start with #1. I saw this exact bike at the headquarters last week.

WICHITA, Kansas (June 15, 2007) – Big Dog Motorcycles, the world’s largest manufacturer of custom bikes, celebrates the continued success of its K-9 chopper by closing the 2007 model year – the company’s 13th – with 100 Limited Edition versions of the popular bike.

This is one bad as hell bike! The stance is very menacing, as if it’s growling at you from the carner, chained to the wall. This bike should have a name like The Rottweiller or The Doberman. Just a mean machine!

Limited Edition graphics and styling cues provide additional rebellion to a motorcycle that already has a take-no-prisoners posture. Individually hand-painted red and silver pinstripes subtly adorn its gloss black sheet metal. The 117 cubic inch V-twin centerpiece is powder coated black and gets another stylish touch with Diamond Heads® diamond-cut heads and cylinders. Making the bike even more commanding are other significant black powder coated components: Handlebars, headlight, and PM vintage mag-style spoke wheels.

“The Limited Edition K-9 is a menacing blend of form and function,” commented Nick Messer, President, Big Dog Motorcycles. “With its stretched out, aggressive stance, powerful V-twin engine, BDM Balance Drive, and blacked out components, it stirs the soul not just through its performance, but also through its presence.”

“And it’s especially appropriate to debut this edition at the close of another solid year for the K-9. It has been an award winner, attention getter, and a consistent top seller, deserving to be celebrated in such a unique manner,” he added.

The Limited Edition K-9 shares key characteristics as the standard model, namely an ultra fat 300 rear tire cradled within an a-frame swingarm hidden shock suspension. It also exudes attention-getting brawn with its 39-degree frame rake and 690-pound weight. The 1,916cc engine is fed by a Super G carburetor for absolute power; a super-refined Baker 6-speed transmission provides aggressive acceleration and smooth highway cruising; and the standard BDM Balance Drive System amplifies agility and cornering capabilities, even for wide-tire motorcycles.

“The K-9 is a well-balanced, well-designed machine,” Messer continued. “It shows that, with each new generation of motorcycles, we set even higher standards for crowd-stopping, show-winning style while at the same time making the bike thoroughly enjoyable to ride.”

Riders can amplify their individualism with aftermarket accessories including integrated air ride suspension giving the bike a lower rear fender for a true custom look or aired higher for optimal suspension; Big Radius™ or Mean Mother™ exhaust systems with a variety of tips; sissy bar and passenger seating; and made-to-order custom seats handcrafted with top-quality hides and eye-catching designs.

I took a trip to Wichita and was privileged enough to sweet-talk my way into their production area for a sneak peek at the construction of this blacked out monster. Check the pics below and follow Bikernet’s underground access to the world of Big Dog Motorcycles as seen behind closed doors!

Bare naked lady! Well, actually just a bare frame starting it’s journey through the portals of Big Dog magic.

Freshly powder coating. Like wet clothes hanging to dry.

Heart surgery for the beast.

It amazed me the ease each technician displayed while handling their individual workstation. These bikes were wheeled from each station to the next as if moved along the production process.

I could look at these pics all day long and remember being completely blown away by the attention to detail these guys show in every aspect of the build!

The details included on the limited edition are amazing. This is one of those bikes you seem to find more details every time you look at it.

That’s the story, in pictures. These bikes are hand-built, one by one.
