THE BIKERNET EUROPEAN GIRL CONNECTION– I had a very short shooting today with a Walz Hardcore-Bike and a chick and then we hurried to a WWE-Wrestling-Event at Cologne, to tape some material for our new planned TV-show “Pump, the Fitness Magazine”. Got the Undertaker, The Hardys and Triple HHH on tape.
Cool Shit!. But we were absent all day long, I just returned home, it is 01:00 AM here now. For this I had no chance at all to send some pix/chix. But tomorrow I could do, latest for the Sunday news. I’ll attach some from my MacBook now. I think you’ll like.

SEMA SHOW OPEN TO MOTORCYCLE COMPANIES– The 2009 SEMA Show is only a little more than six months away! Start getting your Show game plan together by viewing the online flooplan and a list of the more than 500 companies already planning their Show exhibits.
Although exhibitor booth selection is still several weeks away, it’s never too early to get familiar with the Show layout and locations of must-see sections and attractions, including the Motor Trend Proving Grounds and the West Coast Customs Experience.
The 2009 SEMA Show will also feature two new sections?Paint, Body & Equipment, and Powersports & Utility Vehicles?to create additional opportunities for specialty-equipment and aftermarket companies.
Other great new Show features include an enhanced New Products Showcase area in its new location (South Hall, upper level), including a new award category for powersports products.
Registration has also moved to a new location, South Hall, upper level.

GOOD NEWS FROM AMA–PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Acting Chairman Nancy Nord of the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission has decided to hold off for a year enforcing the new lead law that has forced dealers to yank youth-model off-road motorcycles and ATVs off their showroom floors.
Commissioner Thomas Moore, the second member of the commission, has yet to vote. The law, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) that took effect in February, has stopped the sale of dirt bikes and ATVs for children 12 or under. The law was meant to protect children from dangerous levels of lead in toys, but it was written so broadly that it also governs such things as children’s books, clothes, motorcycles and ATVs.

Harley announces additional lay-offs, re-confirms unit shipment target– In announcing its first quarter 2009 results, Harley-Davidson has disclosed that it is to add a further 300 to 400 to the 800 production job lay-offs (of 1,100 total) already forecast for 2009/2010, but that it is sticking to the March revised unit shipment forecast for 2009 of between 264,000 and 273,000.
In a market that Harley reports as seeing a 12.0 percent first quarter decline in retail sales of their motorcycles (9.7 percent domestic US decline against the year ago quarter), outgoing President and CEO Jim Ziemer said that “while we are mildly encouraged by the fact that the U.S. retail sales rate declined less in the first quarter than in the prior two quarters, we remain cautious and continue to expect 2009 to be an extremely challenging business environment.”
Harley is right to be cautious given that this year’s 12.0 percent decline is only a shade less than the 12.8 percent it saw in 2008 over the first quarter of 2007. However, industry-wide retail sales of heavyweight motorcycles in the U.S. declined 22.3 percent during the first quarter of 2009.
The forecast production cuts will see Harley’s motorcycle shipments to its dealer network fall by between 10 and 13 percent year-on-year and, putting it and the lay-offs in the context of the wider economic conditions, Ziemer went on to say that “we continue to make good progress in executing our strategy for the economic downturn, and we will continue to manage our business with strong discipline.”
Talking about the additional lay-offs, Ziemer said “we don’t make any job reduction decisions lightly, but based on further planning since January and a deeper analysis of our production requirements, we have now determined that fewer production employees will be required.”
At $1.29 billion, Harley’s first quarter revenue was only 0.3 percent lower than the $1.31 billion it recorded for the year-ago period, and the Company has reported diluted earnings per share of $0.50 for the first quarter, versus $0.79 in 2008.
Indeed the Company says that at 74,670 it shipped 3.9 percent more Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the first quarter of 2009 (compared to 71,868 first quarter 2008) and that this was “within the Company’s guidance for the quarter,” and that it plans to ship 55,000 to 59,000 motorcycles during the second quarter of 2009.
In line with the brand investment strand of the three-part downturn management strategy it announced in January, the Company says that its “Ride Free” Sportster motorcycle trade-up program “successfully created consumer interest and reinforced the brand value of Harley-Davidson motorcycles.”
Starting in April, Harley has been following this up with a national “Super Ride” program that is designed to provide “an expanded opportunity for U.S. consumers to test ride a wide range of Harley-Davidson motorcycles at participating dealerships.”
Speaking about this initiative and the firm’s brand development strategies in general, Ziemer is quoted as saying “Demo rides have proven to be one of the most effective ways to turn dreamers into customers and to get current customers excited about a new motorcycle. Through all of our marketing, we are reaching consumers in ways that support the brand and the value proposition of our motorcycles.”

BIKERNET PRECISION TECH TIP REVIEW–I just want to pass on a compliment to Master John Covington. I have looked at a few different sites that try to explain how to tie a doo rag. Master Covington’s instructions are the easiest to follow. I also like his humorous writing. This casual lesson has helped me a lot.

I’ll pick up the Chop N Grind racing team in 7 Palms California, so I’ll have an entire team of mechanics following me. Now, I’m headed back into the shop to adjust my King valves.
