CANNONBALL FINALE SUNDAY POST

Hey,

Cannonball wraps up today. I had a suggestion for the future. My thoughts included a Cannonball every other year, and each rally we would move the bikes up a decade. So the next Cannonball would include bikes older than 1926, the next run would reach to 1936, and so on. What the hell.

Another opportunity surfaced this week from within the Bikernet ranks. I attended an MRF Meeting of the Minds legislative convention a couple of years ago. I discussed the Bikernet Independent Noise study, which is always available to anyone fighting noise ordinances anywhere. I also talked about our effort to create a Power Sports group within the SEMA ranks for more motorcycle Legislative punch in the future. That effort continues to move forward.

The final aspect of my presentation was a creative challenge, one that I have grappled with ever since. I feel fervent about a film effort to point out the need for freedom in our country through motorcycles. It would be a large part documentary. I stumbled with this effort, reached out for help to no avail. I took notes, collected business cards from state motorcycle rights leaders, and still have them within reach on my desk. I ran into one wall after another, but didn’t give up. Recently I watched an interview with Tony Blair, the ex-Prime minister of Great Britain. When asked about the negotiating a peace agreement, he said, “Once your sitting at the table, you can never give up.” That hit home, then Wayne, or Uncle Monkey wrote me about a screenplay effort and we got to talking.

I now have a knowledgeable and connected partner in this effort to honor freedom in this country. Hang on for more reports as we move forward with this project. Let’s hit the news:

SPEAKING OF CULTURAL NEGOTIATIONS– I am appalled at all my friends who are so opposed to the mosque near ground zero.  To show our tolerance, we should let them build.  Then right across the street, someone should open a topless bar, called “You  Mecca Me Hot”.  Next to that should be a gay bar, “The Turban Cowboy”.  And next door to the mosque should be a pork rib restaurant, maybe ” Iraq o’ Ribs”?  Then the Muslims could be allowed to show their tolerance.
Problem solved.

MOTORCYCLE CANNONBALL STAGE 15, LAUGHLIN– The troupes’ overnight in Laughlin was quite the adventure. We arrived in the scorching river town hot and parched, but happy for the miles and great ride. Whatever tinkering needed to be done was handled quickly and everyone headed into the Edgewater for some R&R until about 4a.m. when some fool decided to liven things up by pulling the fire alarm on 6 floors, which included the floors most of the Cannonball riders and crew were on. Made for a less then peaceful night.

For this day, the 221 miles included some bad roads that strained patience and steel. Metal fatigue has set in and motor mounts have broken off, as well as kick stands and fender tabs. It seems engines are running better than ever, however.

In 1915 Harley-Davidson boasted that their motorcycle could reach a top seed of 68 mph, so Steve Barber wanted to beat that number, which he did nicely by topping out at 70 mph on his 1915 H-D. Twice.

Vince Martinico is having problems with his oil tank, again. For the third time he will address the reoccurring problem and will ride across the finish line on Sunday. Hell or high water.

Dieter’s bike will not, however, see the checkered flag. He spent the day on the back of Jerry Wieland’s side car rig, following his wife along as Katrin piloted her 1907 JAP across the rough sections of Route 66. After 30 miles of bumping along grueling road surfaces, Katrin arrived at the Victorville H-D with a smile saying, “Nice ride”.

Dave Thompson’s 1914 Indian surprised its owner by bursting into flames. Dave calmly pulled off the road and leaned the bike over, extinguished the fire, and set to work getting the bike road worthy. As he filled the oil tank, a seam split and oil gushed everywhere, a predicament that was not repairable roadside, so rider and machine were delivered to check in via transport. By evening the Thompson Brothers were working on the crispy Indian and I congratulated Dave on his quick thinking and great fireman skills. He plans to cross the finish line alongside his brother, Kris.

Pete Gagan, the Canadian rider who had to withdraw from the rally before it began due to his wife’s health, just couldn’t stand it anymore and has flown in to meet up with his brethren riders via a rental car. We’re all glad for his enthusiasm and happy for his support.

Buddy Stubbs, the Arizona H-D dealership owner, shipped his 1915 Excelsior home due to the extensive engine repairs needed. Buddy will be joining the Cannonball riders for the awards dinner, however.

The Grand Finish at the Santa Monica Pier is scheduled for 1 p.m. this afternoon. The route has been a hotly debated topic since riders will be navigating some tough traffic issues and have some 55 (possibly more) traffic lights to go through. The rider’s meeting last night was tense, but it was voted to stick with the original route and riders will stay in groups of 2-3 with the thought that “safety in numbers” is the best plan.

Side hack sweep rider, British Tim, says he hates to see this ride come to an end. A sentiment most of us share.

IMS INTERNATIONAL 2010-11 MOTORCYCLE SHOW SERIES– IMS tour is in danger of becoming a glorified swap meet instead of the nation’s premiere motorcycle show series. Loss of the Cycle World sponsorship after 25 years and OEMs rumored to be backing out are some serious chinks in the armor… Long-time Show Manager Jeff D’Entremont bailing out and Advanstar not having the site updated three weeks before the show series kicks off are also bad signs!

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY ENGLISH DEPARTMENT SEXUAL WORD OF THE DAY– diaphanous dy-AF-uh-nuhs, adjective:

1. Of such fine texture as to allow light to pass through; translucent or transparent.

2. Vague; insubstantial.

The curtains are thin, a diaphanous membrane that can’t quite contain the light outside.

— Eric Liu, The Accidental Asian

She needed more than diaphanous hope, more than I could give her.

— Tej Rae, “One Hand Extended”, Washington Post, August 12, 2001

This phantom wore many faces, but it always had golden hair, was enveloped in a diaphanous cloud, and floated airily before his mind’s eye in a pleasing chaos of roses, peacocks, white ponies, and blue ribbons.

— Louisa May Alcott, Little Women

Diaphanous
ultimately derives from Greek diaphanes, “showing through,” from diaphainein, “to show through, to be transparent,” from dia-, “through” + phainein, “to show, to appear.” It is related to phantom, something apparently sensed but having no physical reality.

HOLY SHIT, THAT WAS SHORT–We have brothers rolling in from the north and the south. The Hamsters are headed to café Montana for breakfast then to the Santa Monica pier to meet the Cannonball riders. Ray Wheeler is lining up for a speed pass at the Mojave Mile, then heading to our headquarters with our Bonneville tool bag. We hope he’s successful.

Jim Waggaman and a brother is wandering the Long Beach Swap meet then headed to the Pier and finally to the headquarters to search for missing parts, not found at the Veteran’s stadium. I’ve got to wrap the news, scramble over to help my 87-year-old ma, then back to meet the bros, work on the 1%er book, and somehow get something rolling on the next HORSE deadline with Brass Balls Bobbers.

It’s going to be another exciting week at the Bikernet Interplanetary Headquarters. We have deadlines, a Storz Sportster feature, BUB pipe install on my son’s dyna, and a dyno test at Bennett’s Performance in Long Beach.

Then we’re going to install a Zipper’s ECM, a Performance Machine highflow air cleaner and a Bub 2-into-1 on a 2010 FLH and bring you the results. Make me a margarita.

Ride Forever,

-Bandit
