NEW YEARS SUNDAY POST

Happy New Year,

We will hit the bricks running. Even today, I’ll be making final adjustments to my son’s Mudflap girl FXR. It’s so close. It’s time to make brake lines, bleed the brakes, add the hoses, fluids and wiring. Then I need to dig a ditch out back and prepare to move the iron we hope to use to build the iron clad deck on the side of the building.

Okay, I know I told you about the container, but in 2012 we need to be flexible, open to suggestions and opportunities. So I started with a $12,000-$20,000 deck, then a $5,000 container based deck, but then I spoke to Gary, the new-guy leasee next door. He’s refurbishing the lot and moving a LAPD investigation impound yard next door. In the process, he’s tearing down some of the tin buildings. He offered to give us some of the metal pieces, so we’re back to building a deck. Another project for 2012.

My mantra, this year will be to bring you weekly progress reports on all of our projects. It will be my weekly homework assignment. You grade my results on a weekly basis. Hang on. Let’s hit the news.

THE EVER-EXPANDING STORY OF CLIFF VAUGHS AND THE EASY RIDER MOVIE BIKES–I was already working on the story behind the Captain America, and the Billy Bike when the latest issue of Easyriders arrived in my mail box. The February 2012 edition of Easyriders has an ad on page 89 that asks if the Captain America bike housed in the National Motorcycle Museum is real.

“Is it Real? Peter Fonda & Dan Haggerty say yes!” This might be bullshit, or the absolute truth, I don’t know yet. Although I’ve spent days doing research, I’ve yet to write one word of the story. All the big names are here. I’ve corresponded with Easyriders editor Dave Nichols, and he’s provided some great information. Bandit provided some helpful leads to Mil Blair, former owner of Jammer Cycle, and Ron Paugh, at Paughco who also owns a Capt. America bike.

Earlier in the week I spoke on the phone with Cliff Vaughs, the man who was an associate producer working on the filming of Easy Rider, and built Captain America, and the Billy Bike. Now 74 years old, Cliff said he didn’t have an axe to grind, but he did want his four sons to know of his contribution.

Peter Fonda was on the Tavis Smiley show during the 40th anniversary tour celebrating Easy Rider, and said it was “four black guys in Watts that built Captain America, and the Billy Bike.”

It only gets more tangled. Some years ago I met a friend of “Clean” Dean Shawler editor of Biker, and at a point he owned the Captain America bike Dennis Hopper had traded for a concho belt. Is it the same bike now housed in the National Motorcycle Museum? At this point I don’t know, but I bet before it’s all said and done I’ll have a damn good idea.

Today is New Year’s Day 2012, I’ve put a call in to a fellow custom painter friend that I believe painted the tank that went on the Captain America bike built for Otis Chandler, in the late ’80s. Does the bike Otis Chandler owned have any rightful claim to blood lines, or was it about as authentic as a CMC version of Captain America? Will I get shot, or sued before this story gets laid to bed, who knows?

If you’d like to help please send lawyers, guns, facts, rumors, and money to “Krylon” John c/o Bikernet.com.

MORE IDLE THOUGHTS– All I ask is a chance to prove that money can’t make me happy.

If the world were a logical place, men would be the ones who ride horses sidesaddle.

What is a “free” gift? Aren’t all gifts free?

They told me I was gullible and I believed them.

FREEDOM FLAGS BEING CIRCULATED–The following was written to Rogue, a member of the Freedom Fighters Hall of Fame in the Sturgis Museum: Thank you for signing and circulating the 11 flags. Their presentation at the Sturgis M.C. Museum & Hall of Fame Breakfast at 9am on August 8, 2012 in Rapid City, SD will be glorious. You, Tony SanFelipo, New York Myke; Keith Ball and all the other Freedom Fighters will formally present them to the Board of Directors.

Our mission now is to make sure all previous Freedom Fighter inductees, sign the 11 flags. I’ll be crisscrossing the Southwest USA in January and February.

Howard Wurgler, Midwest Stairs & Iron, is finishing flag mount for my trike. As discussed Rogue, there is merit for a “Technical Tips” article. Perhaps you can initiate and circulate it to all major motorcycle media.

Large flags are vitally important to provide color and movement. This insures increased awareness and prevents ‘Cagers’ from taking us down. As mentioned before, Howie constructed the last set which recorded almost 200,000 miles with no problem. Then a weld broke in the Yukon Territory on my second return trip from Key West, FL. to Prudue B ay, Alaska.

Perhaps you and I will be part of the American Motorcyclists Hall of Fame Breakfast at Daytona Beach on Friday, March 16, 2012. It would be great if we can get signatures on the 11 flags during the whole Daytona Rally.

Many of us wonder Rogue, how the world would have changed had you continued in the Catholic ministry. You have indeed made remarkable blessings for the Biker Movement. Congratulations!

See you in March, if not before – God willing.
God Bless You

HOLIDAY MEALS FOR NEEDY FAMILIES– Hupy and Abraham, S.C. donated meals and money to thousands of needy families in Wisconsin and Illinois this holiday season.

For many years, it has been our tradition to make these contributions rather than sending holiday cards or gifts to our clients.

Best Wishes to You for a Happy New Year!

STRESS RELIEF IN FIVE STEPS, Part 5: Supplements for Stress–
Each Sunday in December we presented tips that can help you manage unhealthy stress. Consider them this holiday season, and pass them along to family and friends!

If you want to reduce unhealthy stress, start by identifying the problems and situations that create stress – then learn to manage them by practicing general techniques of stress protection, such as breathing exercises. As for supplements, consider the following:

* Multivitamin. A daily multivitamin can help to fill nutritional gaps and counteract the negative effects of unhealthy stress on the body.

* B-complex. B vitamins can help balance mood, calm the nervous system, and increase the efficacy of some prescription anti-depressants.

* Omega-3 (fish oil) supplement. Either from molecularly distilled fish oil or from krill. A deficiency in omega-3 fatty acids has been associated with increased anxiety and depression.

* Valerian (Valeriana officinalis). An extract from the root of this flowering perennial contains essential oils that have been shown to help some people more effectively deal with stress.

* Calcium and magnesium. Both are involved in many key physiologic processes and may help support healthy sleep, as well as muscle relaxation.

* St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum). Extracts of this flowering herb, indigenous to Europe, may help boost mood and maintain a healthy emotional outlook.

Happy New Year, Happy New YOU!

HOUSE OF THUNDER HARLEY-DAVIDSON BEST DEALERSHIP IN THE WORLD–Dan Stern, the owner of the Morgan Hill, CA dealership, and his crew recently participated in a Gallop Poll Survey initiated by the factory. The polling crew questioned his staff and 50 random customers. They performed the same polling service with the top 50 H-D dealerships in the country. Dan’s crew received the highest rating of any business ever surveyed by Gallop.
Actually, the factory received extremely negative results. “It’s all about being involved in biking,” Dan said. “I’m a biker and care about my customers, no matter what they ride.”

QUESTION ABOUT VINCE AND CHANCE–  I was just wondering. I read Vince and Chance on Bikernet about 3 years ago. I want to read it again. Easier to carry a book around. Think I’ll buy it now that it is available as Harbor Town Seduction.

Just finished Orwell for the 3rd time. Great books to read when it’s too cold to ride (I’m ridin’ this weekend!)

I manage the night clubs at Harrah’s. Give me a shout when you’re in town, I’ll walk you in the side door. Our outdoor venue kicks ass. We have a rock and metal band Sunday thru Wednesday.

No cover at Toby Keith’s Bar. Got a country band in there every night.

FIRST PROGRAM I WATCHED IN 2012 AT 1:00 A.M.–MARK STEYN, Author of Get America talked about over regulation. In California they now have a sheet authority who regulates the sheets used in hotels. In Oregon a 7-year-old selling lemonade was attacked by regulators demanding a temporary restaurant permit, the cost $500. In New Hampshire, an 11-year-old was fined by fish and game because she saved a woodpecker from the jaws of a cat, nursed it back to life and set it free.

TWO RIDERS IN WESTERN ILLINOIS ARE FACING CHARGES– after pulling up to a McDonald’s drive-thru completely nude.

Police in Galesburg say a 19-year-old El Paso man and a 21-year-old Galesburg woman were released from Knox County Jail after being ordered to appear in court to face public indecency charges.

Police reports state that the duo was still in the McDonald’s parking lot when officers arrived just before 2 a.m. Wednesday. Police say the man was crouched over in the driver’s seat trying to put on a pair of pants, while his passenger was covering up in a blanket.

The pair told officers that the late night fast-food run might not have been a great idea, but they both still thought it was funny.

DOT bans cell phone use for Hazmat, CMV drivers–
http://www.agprofessional.com/newsletters/agpro-weekly/articles/DOT-bans-cell-phone-use-for-Hazmat-CMV-drivers-136239978.html

Effective January 3, drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) and drivers of placarded quantities of hazardous materials will be restricted from using mobile phone devices. The Department of Transportation (DOT) is restricting these drivers from holding a mobile telephone to conduct a voice communication, dialing a mobile telephone by pressing more than a single button, or reaching for a mobile phone in an unacceptable and unsafe manner, such as reaching for a mobile telephone on the passenger seat.

Drivers convicted of two or more violations within a three-year period of the new hand-held mobile telephone use restriction will be disqualified from operating a CMV for 60 days.

Additionally, motor carriers are prohibited from requiring or allowing drivers of CMVs to use hand-held mobile telephones.

For more information, the rule is available here http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2011-12-02/pdf/2011-30749.pdf .

DIVA DAWN’S – POLAR BEAR “PLUNGE-RAISER 4 AIDAN!”
CONEY ISLAND – NEW YEARS DAY – 2011–

You may know Diva Dawn from a Rally, seen her on TV or in a biker magazine.
“Diva Dawn” Santucci, actress, model and old school biker is going to PLUNGE into the frozen waves off Coney Island at noon on New Year’s Day 2012 to raise donations for 7-year-old Aidan Jack Seeger!

Aidan’s wonderful parents are Bobby and Elisa Seeger of Indian Larry Motorcycles, Brooklyn, NY.
Aidan is a beautiful 7-year-old boy, with huge blue eyes and a smile that is contagious.
He is full of personality and laughter and currently in Duke University Children’s Hospital.
June 2011, Aidan was diagnosed with a rare brain disease called Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD).
ALD is a rare, inherited disorder that untreated leads to progressive brain damage, failure of the adrenal glands and eventually death.

You can read about Aidan’s Story here: http://aidanhasaposse.wordpress.com/about/

To donate to Diva Dawn’s “PLUNGE 4 AIDAN” go to:
http://www.gofundme.com/Plunge4Aidan

With your donations of: $5, $10, $50 & UP!
We can make a difference for Aidan and his family!

On any given New Years Day off of Coney Island, the Atlantic Ocean’s temperatures average 25-35 degrees, adding Diva Dawn’s aversion to being frigid ANY time-of-year, this should be quite the event!

SO HERE IS THE DEAL!!!

$300 raised gets DIVA to plunge in a thermal DRY SUIT.
$500 raised gets DIVA to plunge in a FULL PIECE Bathing Suit.
$1,000 raised gets DIVA to plunge in a sexy (barely there) Tarzan/Jane COSTUME.
$5,000 raised gets DIVA to plunge in TASSELS and a THONG!

IT’S NOW UP TO YOU!!!!
100% of ALL DONATIONS WILL GO TO AIDAN!
(minus taxes and the 3.5% fee that GoFundMe.com takes to maintain this website)

NOTE: The Official Coney Island Polar Bear Club New Year’s Day Plunge raises money for Camp Sunshine, which helps ill children and their families. “Indian Larry” Desmedt (1949-2004) was an active member of the Coney Island Polar Bear Club!!!

THIS “PLUNGE-RAISER” has been created for AIDAN and his FAMILY and is in addition to the donations we hope everyone also makes to Camp Sunshine.

INDIAN MOTORCYCLES of Chicago closes– It looks like Indian Motorcycles has lost another dealership. A Chicago-area showroom is empty save for a few fixtures, and calls to the store’s main phone number are met with a recording from Verizon.

Indian Motorcycles of Chicago, situated 45 miles west of the city in South Elgin, Ill., has shut off the lights. Interestingly, the store’s website is still live.

Sources told Dealernews that the dealership closed its doors after Thanksgiving. It is the latest in a series for the long-suffering marque which fought its way through a number of ownerships before finally being bought by Polaris.

A dealership in Wichita, Kansas, dropped the brand a few weeks ago and opted to ride out the rest of the recession by focusing on used bikes.

Salt Shaker

It’s a miracle. The hot rod Panhead fires at the slightest touch of the button that activates a killer Spyke starter. Last week end we had a coil meltdown that back fed power into the distributor and fried it as well.

Think positive and look in the stash bin under spare coils/distributors and there’s the brand new ignition with a matching pair of single fire, single plug coils. Good clean livin.

Rolled around the San Pedro harbor this afternoon with three of the local riders, 2 on kick start shovelheads with jockey shifts, ending up at Walker’s Tavern on the point overlooking the ocean. The fog was thick as shit on the shingle out on the coast, while just a few blocks inland the sun was blazin with temps in the mid 70’s. The Salt Shaker sang a happy tune all afternoon.

2004 Dyna Twin Cam 96 inch

Lee Clemens from Departure Bike Works shipped the missing pieces for the top shelf, 96 inch Twin Cam build. The intake manifold is at Branch/O’Keefe for an interior blend and polish so that all parts match perfectly for unimpeded air flow from zero to warp speeds. We expect a top secret fuel injector to magically appear in the near future just in time to compliment the build. Eric at Bennett’s Performance in Signal Hill, CA is building a precision air pump that will be more than capable of evading high speed pursuits. It’s those damn, tricky radio’s that are hard to outrun.

Sturgis 2012

Mark your calendar and ride on out. Bikernet and Cycle Source are teaming up to rock the rally. You will find us on Lazelle Street next to the old Roscoe’s, across from the new Easyrider saloon and Eatery, Hooters and The Broken Spoke.

New Years Eve at the Bikernet Headquarters and all is well.

QUICK LET’S GET SOMETHING DONE–Next week I will publish my first Bandit Life and Times for the first time in a while, then post another chapter of Chance’s second book, the World Run. I need to wrap up a Dyna S ignition install, and a short piece about the Swift Kick kicker arm from Nash Motorcycle Company. Let’s see, what else, goddammit?

I need to order another supply of Jeans. I like to wear Diamond Gussett, but I may switch to Wrangler. Then I will start another Mudflap girl update on my Son’s FXR. Seems there’s something else, but I’m drawing a blank. Wait, we will bring you more info on this entry level ATK 650 in the very near future. Plus, we have an amazing story about the history of motorcycle postcards coming from Paul Garson.

Have a helluva new year and relax, it all starts tomorrow. You can review my progress report next Sunday.
