NEVER A DULL SUNDAY POST

Hey,

I wrote about the economy, then the Week magazine hit our mail box. The subtitle read, “A surge in hiring finally sparks economic optimism.” Amazing. The Labor Department job report indicated that employers added a net of 243,000 jobs last month. Unemployment dropped to 8.3 percent. That’s good goddamn news.

So, I’ll keep my mouth shut, my hand on the throttle and pray for the economy to return, and for the government to put Freedom ahead of regulations. Let’s hit the news, then I’ll fill you in on Bikernet content for next week. Wild stuff headed your way.

TRIKE RIDERS COMMENTS– Is TrikeRidersNow.com a blog?

TrikeRidersNow.com is not a blog. It is an online magazine that abides by the same strict, unforgiving, standards as a journalistically sound print magazine, almost. Ben does write the Bikernet blog as sort of an “editor’s note” part of this Web site ezine. A blog, by definition, features opinionated content by its author. TRN or BikernetTrikes is not a blog. We have no opinion…

Hang on to your hat, this might be the week we finish the build at Bennett’s Performance in Signal Hill. Eric has been as busy as a one-armed paper hanger in a Stage 1 hurricane. MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS REV UP CONTROVERSY IN CONGRESS–
Motorcycle-only safety checkpoints have revved up controversy among some lawmakers who say the inspections are another example of intrusive federal policies.

A measure inserted into the House transportation bill would bar the U.S. Department of Transportation from providing grants to local or state governments for such inspections.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/nationnow/2012/02/congress-motorcycle-checkpoints.html

The action grows out of a furor over checkpoints set up in Georgia last year and planned again this year under a $70,000 federal traffic safety grant.

MONTPELIER, VT. Hundreds request prank pig stay on police decal–

Remember the pig hidden within the decal on the doors of some Vermont State Police cruisers? There’s now a movement under way to keep it there. State law requires that the cow in the crest be red — not red and white — as a tribute to the har¬dy Devon cattle first brought to Vermont by English settlers.

“What I would really like is for the governor to just leave the pigs on the car. That’s the bottom line, at no expense to anybody,” said Barre musician Cid Sinclair, who created the Face¬book page “Save the Vermont Pigs,” which has more than 500 “likes.”

Two hundred people have signed an online petition, he said.

“No harm, no foul, take it as an opportunity to have some fun,” Sin¬clair said.

EASYRIDERS V-TWIN EXPO LAST WEEKEND, THE REPORT–Last weekend many of us attended the V-Twin Expo at the Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. Which, by the way IS the longest running show at the Duke Center as V-Twin now has the record after completing its 12th annual event. Congrats!!

I would like to say thanks to Jim Betlach, his family, and staff for the BEST show ever. Darcy did a great job in Jim’s absence (he was attack by a pneumonia bug).

I wish Jim a speedy recovery and hope to see him in Daytona in March.

AMA NEWS AND NOTES–Sacramento, Calif.: Assembly Bill 1047, sponsored by Asm.
Kevin Jeffries (R- Lake Elsinore), would expressly prohibit state and local law enforcement agencies receiving grant money for a motorcycle safety program from using that money for the implementation of motorcycle-only checkpoints.

Santa Cruz, Calif.: Lt. Colleen McMahon, a veteran of the Santa Cruz Police Department, became the first female motorcycle officer in the department’s 145-year history. Lt. McMahon completed a rigorous certification process through the Alameda County Sheriff’s Motor Academy.

For the over seven years Lt. McMahon has taught at the California Motorcycle Safety Program at Cabrillo College, aiding new riders in motorcycle safety and defensive riding techniques. She received the RiderCoach Recognition Award from the California Highway Patrol for her effective motor instruction techniques.

Atlanta, Ga.: Senate Bill 347, sponsored by Sen. Curt Thompson (D-Tucker), would prohibit additional HOT (high occupancy toll) lanes from being designated by the Georgia Department of Transportation on or after July 1, 2012, unless and until the General Assembly specifically
authorizes the return of HOT lane designations through legislation.

St. Paul, Minn.: House File 2008, sponsored by Rep. Bud Nornes (R-Fergus Falls), would establish a motorcycle road guard certificate program that would allow qualified certificate holders to act as flaggers while escorting a motorcycle group ride. A flagger would be
permitted to direct motorcyclists within a group ride or other vehicle traffic, overriding traffic-control devices including stop signs and traffic-control signals. Anyone operating a vehicle stopped by a flagger could proceed only on instruction by the flagger or a police officer.

Jefferson City, Mo.: Senate Bill 717, sponsored by Sen. Bill Stouffer (R-Napton), would make it a class C misdemeanor to operate a motor vehicle on roads and highways in a distracted manner. A vehicle crash involving distracted driving would elevate the penalty to a class A misdemeanor. Robert Jacquard (D-Cranston), would provide immunity from liability for property damage, personal injury, or wrongful death to landowners who allow their property to be used for an instructional educational course for a certified motorcycle rider education program.

Columbia, S.C: House Bill 4691, sponsored by Rep. Todd Atwater (R-Lexington), would prohibit the Transportation Commission and the Department of Transportation from discriminating against motorcycles, motorcycle operators, or motorcycle passengers when formulating transportation policy, promulgating regulations, allocating funds, and planning, designing, constructing, equipping, operating, and maintaining transportation facilities. The policy would also apply to transportation facilities and projects undertaken or operated by
counties, cities, towns, and other political subdivisions of the state where public funds have been used in whole or in part to plan, design, construct, equip, operate, or maintain the facility or project.

Columbia, S.C.: Governor Nicky Haley has told riders she would veto a bill that proposes to change the state’s helmet law. Sen. Ralph Anderson (D-Greenville) recently filed a bill that would change the language of the current helmet law from only requiring riders under 21
to wear a helmet to include all motorcycle riders.

BIKERNET UNIVERSITY TARDY STUDENT WEEKEND VOCABULARY LESSON–auscultation aw-skuhl-TEY-shuhn, noun:

The act of listening to sounds within the body as a method of diagnosis.

Auscultation shows it clearly enough, once I had grown accustomed to his particular bodily sounds. It is a very valuable diagnostic tool, little known in England, I believe.

— Patrick O’Brian, The Yellow Admiral

Even as he examined the cousins, he went on talking about the matter in a melancholy, resigned tone of voice, for he was such an expert in auscultation that he could simultaneously listen to a patient’s interior, talk about something else, and dictate what he had heard to his assistant.

— Thomas Mann, The Magic Mountain

The Latin roots of auscultation have been buried in English. The word auscultare meant “to hear or to listen” from the root auris which meant “ear.” The suffix -ion forms nouns from stems, as in communication and opinion.

SLIPPERY MYSTERIES DISCOVERED REGARDING WD-40, BUT COULD IT BE BULLSHIT– Before you read to the end, does anybody know what the main ingredient of WD-40? Don’t lie and don’t cheat.

WD-40 – Who knew! I had a neighbor who bought a new pickup. I got up very early one Sunday morning and saw that someone had spray painted red all around the sides of this beige truck (for some unknown reason). I went over, woke him up, and told him the bad news. He was very upset and was trying to figure out what to do….probably nothing until Monday morning, since nothing was open. Another neighbor came out and told him to get his WD-40 and clean it off. It removed the unwanted paint beautifully and did not harm his paint job that was on the truck. I’m impressed! WD-40 who knew?

BIKERNET STUDIES H-D IN INDIA–
To understand why Harley-Davidson entry is a giant leap in Indian two-wheeler market, you need to understand the market here for two-wheelers. Almost every adult who learns to drive, starts by learning to ride a two-wheeler, i.e. a motorcycle or a scooter. Among teenagers and college students, the popularity of motorcycles is unmatched comparing it to the West. Every boy wants a motorcycle and ofcourse it is more intimate to have a gal hanging on to you in the pillion seat than driving a car which a college-dude here can’t afford anyways.

Scooters and gearless scooterettes are popular among females, both young and the adult employed ones.

Watch for our exclusive report and interview on Bikernet this coming week.–Bandit

BIKERNET CULINARY INSTITUTE WORKS EXCLUSIVELY WITH DR. WEIL–Heart Healthy Recipe: Poached Salmon.

Those of you who are familiar with Dr. Weil’s anti-inflammatory diet will know that one of the initial dietary changes you’re encouraged to make is to start eating fish – particularly wild, oily, cold-water fish. Of the varieties that fall into this category (mackerel, kippers, sardines and salmon) salmon is a standout.

It’s a leading source of omega-3 fatty acids, essential fatty acids that contribute to brain growth and development, and may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and cancer. Salmon is often available fresh, and it also scores points as a food that’s easy to cook but looks and tastes like the elegant work of a gourmet chef.

Try this and Dr. Weil’s other salmon recipes; they’re easy enough for everyday dining, fine enough for a special occasion, and guaranteed to set you on the road to good health.

Food as Medicine

Salmon, like other species of fatty, cold-water fish, can be a potent ally in protecting heart health. In one Japanese study, individuals who consumed fish eight times per week had a 37 and 56 percent reduced risk of heart disease and heart attack, respectively, than those who consumed only one serving per week. But abundant omega-3 fatty acids are not salmon’s only nutritional virtue. It is also an excellent source of selenium (75 percent of the Daily Value for four ounces of salmon), which helps to regulate thyroid function and support the immune system; and vitamin D (over 100 percent of the Daily Value in the same amount of salmon), which promotes bone health and strengthens the immune system. Vitamin D deficiency (most adults in the United States do not get enough of this essential vitamin) is associated with an increased risk of depression, cancer and other diseases.

Try this heart healthy fish recipe today!

Ingredients

Salmon filets (allow 6 ounces per person)
1 carrot, sliced
1 small onion, sliced
1 stalk celery, sliced
2 slices lemon
Several sprigs of parsley
6 bay leaves (Turkish, or 1/2 of a California bay leaf)
Salt to taste
1 cup dry white wine
Juice of half a lemon

Instructions

1. Cut the salmon filets into individual portions if necessary.

2. Place in a large skillet the carrot, onion, sliced celery, lemon, parsley and bay leaves.

3. Add the fish, cold water to cover, salt to taste, the wine and the lemon juice. Bring the water to a boil, uncovered.

4. Adjust heat to simmer and let fish cook for 5 minutes.

5. Turn off the heat and leave fish undisturbed for 10 minutes. Then remove it carefully to a serving platter; the salmon will be perfectly done. It is delicious served either hot or cold.

IOWA LAWMAKERS to grieving teens: Sorry, but no helmet law this year–A bill that would require children in Iowa to wear helmets on motorcycles was defeated in the Senate this morning despite the urgent cries from four Iowa City-area teenagers who lost a friend last year after a moped accident.

“It is definitely a disappointment,” said Caroline Van Voorhis, a 17-year-old student at Iowa City West High School. “We definitely came here hoping they would realize this is a really important issue and pass it out of the subcommittee but we’re not going to be scared to go forward. We’re going to keep pushing.”

http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20120209/NEWS09/120209008/1007/news05

The friend, Caroline Found, died Aug. 11th after a moped she was driving struck a tree. She died at the scene and was not wearing a helmet.

Iowa had a helmet law for less than a year, from Sept. 1, 1975, to July 1, 1976 but was repealed after protests from groups and people who argued the issue is about personal freedoms and insisted that education instead of a legislative mandate is the best way to protect the public.

Mark Maxwell, a lobbyist for ABATE of Iowa, spoke against the bill, noting that his group has fought such mandates for decades.

STROKER’S PANHEAD–I love that ’65 Panhead. I originally bought it in 1987, some 25 years ago. It was a completely different configuration back then. This is actually the third and last reincarnation. In the ’90s is was in a stretched, swingarm frame, sort of ProStreet with lots of Arlen Ness goodies. It was cool, but we had to do it our way.

This time we custom built everything at the shop. All the metal was hand formed here at Strokers. Some folks think it’s the coolest chop they’ve ever seen. I agree. I’ll ride it to my last days, then Lena (Bigun), my daughter, can take over. Old Pans never die!

POLITICIAN GOES TO JAIL– By Anthony Colarossis

Attorney Anthony Suarez spent hours Thursday in a desperate attempt to keep ousted Orange County Commissioner Mildred Fernández out of prison.

But even as Suarez made his best case with Circuit Judge C. Jeffery Arnold, he faced a reality even the most skilled of litigators could not blur: An image of Fernández accepting an illegal campaign contribution remained frozen on a screen across the courtroom the entire time Suarez spoke.

In the end, Arnold sentenced Fernández to 22 months.

Nothing Suarez said — about his client’s high blood pressure, her contributions to the community and her insistence that she did not try to shake down an undercover agent she thought was a developer — could overcome the evidence

Investigators caught the one-time Republican mayoral candidate on video accepting cash campaign contributions in exchange for “access” and her help with a commercial-development project.

COUNCIL PASSES READING OF MOTORCYCLE ORDINANCE–
By Iain Wilson/Independent Staff Writer

NARRAGANSETT — In hopes of curtailing the ear-piercing wail of illegal motorcycle tailpipes, the Town Council on Monday voted unanimously to approve an ordinance that would allow police officers to perform traffic stops on motorcycles that are clearly audible from at least 200 feet away.

Police Chief F. Dean Hoxsie said his department is consistently fielding noise complaints about motorcycles zipping through Narragansett, primarily in the center of town.

“This will give us a little flexibility,” said Hoxsie.

Armed with the new ordinance, officers would be allowed to conduct a traffic stop on a motorcycle if any sound emanating from the bike is plainly audible from a distance of at least 200 feet.

Motorcyclists would be cited if the exhaust system on the bike was not factory installed.

http://www.scindependent.com/articles/2012/02/09/narragansett/doc4f33dbe54cf51224856378.txt

First offenders would be fined $100, which would jump to $250 and $500 for second- and third-time offenses, respectively.

NEVER A DULL MOMENT–We are going to fly at this week starting this afternoon. We hope to replace the Rivera-Primo ring gear and slap my son’s Mudflap Girl FXR clutch and primary back together. If I can capture some shop warmth, quiet, and good vibes, I’ll wire her. We need to steal the petrol cell off Frank’s bike, replace it with a Paughco, and install the sleek tank on my 1940 45 Bonne Belle racer. That tank is perfect, and ready to rock, sealed by Jim Murillo.

This coming week you’ll see my French WWII fiction published thanks to Bruce Snyder. You’ll have the chance to read about the Harley movement in India, another ATK 250 cc entry level road test, see our Bonneville sponsorship program for 2012, and see Easyriders show coverage from Buckshot. Plus, I will have a list of new material about to flash onto BikernetBaggers and BikernetTrikes. Oh, and we’re going to start a series of articles with Joe from Motion Pro, on selecting throttle cables, and clutch cables for your builds.

Hang on.

Ride Forever,
