MO’ MOTORCYCLE DISCRIMINATION– Coming To Motorcycle Events Soon?????? We have seen reports from events recently where motorcyclist have been stopped for routine checks.

WASHINGTON (AP) Police in the nation’s capital set up controversial vehicle checkpoints Saturday in a neighborhood reeling from gun violence, with civil liberties groups considering legal action and closely observing officers.

Police in neon yellow vests stopped motorists traveling through the main thoroughfare of Trinidad ? a neighborhood near the National Arboretum in the city’s northeast section. Police checked drivers’ identification and turned away those who didn’t have a “legitimate purpose” in the area, such as a church visit or doctor’s appointment.

The checkpoints were announced after eight people were killed in the city last weekend. Most of the killings occurred in the police district that includes Trinidad. Already this year, the district has had 22 killings ? one more than in all of last year.

The checkpoints have drawn harsh criticism from civil rights groups.

“Trinidad should not be treated like Baghdad,” said Mark Thompson, the leader of the NAACP’s local police task force.

Thompson was joined Saturday morning by about a dozen activists representing myriad groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, at the intersection where the checkpoints began in the evening. They warned of legal action if residents’ constitutional rights were violated.

“It seems interesting that police are willing to easily cast aside fundamental freedoms for quick-fix, lazy law enforcement tactics,” said Johnny Barnes, executive director of the ACLU for the National Capital Area. “We’re going to do everything to make sure that the rights of citizens are protected.”

Barnes said about two dozen lawyers, law students and other citizens were monitoring the checkpoints Saturday night and interviewing those who were turned away by police to determine if people’s rights were violated.

Interim D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles and Mayor Adrian M. Fenty have insisted that the checkpoints are a legal and necessary step to stop a spike in violence.

“It would be unconscionable, maybe even a dereliction of our duty, for the police chief and I to not do something different, to not turn up the heat,” Fenty said.

The checkpoints will be enforced at random hours for at least five days, though it could be extended to 10 days, police said. Officers will search cars only if they observe guns or drugs. Pedestrians will not be affected.

CANTINA SUNDAY ASSISTANCE DRIVE– I have a very good friend in OH. who needs our help. This is quite an easy thing for us to do, requires just a little effort on our part…and well worth our time.

A certain party is putting together a quilt to auction off for my friend. This quilt is planned to be H-D or biker based. The party putting together the quilt is in need of your donations of rally shirts, bike shop shirts or logos, (worn out, but with good logo on it for the quilt square,) bandannas, or any other material suitable to make a quilt square from.

They will also be conducting a raffle, and donated items would be accepted as well. Not looking for big ticket items, just things like key fobs, cozies, novelty items…some will go in a pinata as well…what ever you care to stick in a box and send out would be gladly accepted. The parties putting this thing together are not looking for major money, just some fun things to auction off to a gathering of friends from around the country, in order to off set some of my girlfriend’s mounting bills due to her medical condition.

Many of you know her personally, or from contact with her online. Many of you have attended her parties at her house over the years…most of you coming from all over the states from Maine to Ca. She’s a person worthy of respect and our help.

You can ship your donations to:

HARLEY-DAVIDSON ANNOUNCES LAYOFFS A THE YORK PLANT– It would appear that Harley-Davidson?s recent reports of poor sales, due to the slumping US economy, are forcing some serious cutbacks for the American motorcycle giant.

Aside from other cost-cutting measures (for instance, you may remember that H-D shut down production for 4 days back in fall ?07), Harley Davidson has just announced an ?undisclosed? number of layoffs at the York, PA plant as of next week.

These layoffs are in addition to a previously announced annual shutdown of the plant, scheduled for June 30 through the July 4th holiday.

Harley-Davidson also says that, ?it plans to permanently cut about 300 workers from the York County plant. Harley spokesman Bob Klein says potential retirees are receiving information about early retirement, though he knows of no offers being made.? (quoted from The Sentinel)

My best wishes go out to all the H-D employees who are affected — this is a Hell of a bad time to lose a job (not that there is ever a good time, but things being as they are economically, it?s particularly bad news right now).

A lady walks into Tiffany’s —- —- A lady walks into Tiffany’s. She browses around and sees a beautiful diamond bracelet. As she bends over to look more closely she inadvertently breaks wind.

Very embarrassed, she looks around nervously to see if anyone has noticed her little accident.

As she turns around, her worst nightmare materializes in the form of a salesman standing right behind her.

Displaying complete professionalism, the salesman greets the lady, ‘Good day, Madam. How may we help you today?’ Very uncomfortably, but hoping that the salesman didn’t witness her little ‘accident’, she asks, ‘Sir, what is the price of this lovely bracelet?’ He answers, ‘Madam, if you farted just looking at it, you’re going to shit when I tell you the price.

IT’S PRAY FOR SURF TIME–When I was a kid we scrambled to the beach and always prayed for surf to be up and strong. It became an adage for anything positive, from finding a woman with a brilliant smile, to open no-rain roads to all the right parts for the next bike build. I was hit with the Sunday Post after Jeremiah and I returned from the Long Beach Swapmeet. We scored with some parts for Nyla’s bike and restoration shit for Jeremiah’s dad’s bike.

Here’s bob’s new version.

I’m going to jump out of here and escape the shop heat. But tomorrow we hope to launch a couple of Cantina articles and I’ll work on the Storz Sportster tech, a feature from Todd’s Cycle and maybe Bob T. from 21 Palms California will tell us how he restored his old FXRT. It’s cool. In the meantime some of the clan rode to the SmokeOut East and the west coast clan is prepping for Hollister, plus we’re all packing up for Sturgis.
