TO DR. ROBET MC NAMARA, TEMPLE UNIVERSITY, PHILADELPHIA, (email: robert.mcnamara@tuhs.temple.edu)– In several recent articles like the one cited below, I read with great disappointment and disgust the following:
“McNamara said ‘Riders cite the pleasure of going helmet-less, but often the cost of care for the injured motorcyclist is passed on to society at large.’ … McNamara said he fears riders may not fully understand the scientifically demonstrated level of risk involved in riding without a helmet and just assume the risks are acceptable if the law does not prohibit it… ‘The American Academy of Emergency Medicine believes that states should require helmet use in all age groups,’ McNamara said.”
Here is my reply to you and your hypocritical colleagues:
PHYSICIAN, HEAL THYSELF…
Just who in the hell do you think you are, Doc? Neither you nor any other member of the American medical community has any right to be commenting on somebody else’s “risky behavior” or “social costs” until you first deal with your own:
“Infections contracted in hospitals are the fourth largest killer in America. Every year in this country, two million patients’ contract infections in hospitals, and an estimated 103,000 die as a result–as many deaths as from AIDS, breast cancer, and auto accidents combined… Hospital infections add an estimated $30.5 billion to the nation’s hospital costs each year.” “Astoundingly, over half the time physicians and other caregivers break the most fundamental rule of hygiene by failing to clean their hands before treating patients.” “The dirty truth about docs who don’t wash… Doctors, nurses and other hospital staffer too busy, too distracted–or, sometimes, too arrogant–to wash up are the target of a growing movement aimed at cutting rates of hospital-acquired infections that kill nearly 100,000 people in the U.S. each year, according to federal estimates.”
…AND LEAVE MOTORCYCLISTS ALONE!
Bikers aren’t stupid, Doc. We know there is no such thing as a “minor” motorcycle accident. And we know all about the utility of motorcycle helmets. But we also know all about the futility of motorcycle helmet laws…
…which obviously you do not. Every time one of you myopic medical morons publishes a “scientific study” assuring the public that motorcycle helmets or mandatory helmet laws are the cure-all for motorcycle safety, you increase the risk of injury or death for millions of responsible motorcyclists by reinforcing the failed public policy focus on “crash survival” rather than “crash prevention”.
Your medicine isn’t saving lives, Doc. Instead, like the media who publish your perverse prescription, it’s taking them:

MMA CALL TO ACTION– AMA seeks support for bill to end health insurance discrimination against Motorcyclists.
The American Motorcyclist Association announced today that more than 100 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have co-sponsored a bill that would end health insurance discrimination against motorcyclists and others who participate in legal recreational activities or use their motorcycles for transportation.
While the action is significant, there is still much work to be done, according to AMA Vice President for Government Relations Edward Moreland.
“The AMA is calling on motorcyclists and others who face health insurance discrimination to urge their Representatives to support H.R. 1076, known as the HIPAA Recreational Injury Technical Correction Act,” said Moreland. “Time is short. The bill has broad bi-partisan support but we need 218 votes for passage. If we don’t act by April, we will likely miss our chance for legislative action in 2008.”
Health insurance discrimination can have a devastating financial effect on families and has been the focus of efforts by the AMA and other groups for many years. Following the passage of the original HIPAA legislation in 2001, bureaucrats at the Department of Health and Human Services created a loophole that allowed insurance companies to deny benefits to people who are injured while participating in legal recreational activities, such as riding motorcycles or off-road vehicles, horseback riding, skiing, and other activities. H.R. 1076 will close that loophole.
Rep. Michael Burgess, M.D. (R-Texas) has worked diligently to get H.R. 1076 passed. “Laws like HIPAA are passed to protect people,” he said. “Sometimes they have unintended consequences. When this happens, Congress has an obligation to fix the loopholes and that’s what this bill does.”
“No one should be denied health coverage for no reason other than they enjoy snowmobiles, motorcycles or other recreational activities,” said Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), the lead Democrat sponsoring the bill. “This legislation would enforce the original intent of Congress and ensure recreational enthusiasts are not discriminated against.”
In the last Congress, the U.S. Senate passed a companion bill by unanimous consent, but the bigger challenge has been getting legislation approved in the House.
“We now have 101 co-sponsors for this legislation in the House, which is an important milestone,” said Moreland. “But to reach 218 votes and get H.R. 1076 passed, immediate grassroots action is crucial, especially since House members are returning to their districts soon to campaign for the fall election.”
U.S. Representatives can quickly and easily be contacted by going to the AMA Rapid Response Center at Other organizations supporting this legislation include: American Council of Snowmobile Association; American Horse Council; American Recreation Coalition; American Trails; Americans for Responsible Recreational Access; Blue Ribbon Coalition; International Mountain Bicycling Association; Motorcycle Industry Council; Motorcycle Riders Foundation; National Ski Areas Association; Specialty Vehicle Industry Council; Sporting Goods Manufacturing Association; and the Washington Road Riders Association. The American Motorcyclist Association: rights. riding. racing. Founded in 1924, the AMA is a non-profit organization with 290,000 members. The Association’s purpose is to pursue, protect and promote the interests of motorcyclists, while serving the needs of its members. Retail; small; 20 x 29: $695, for the large; 39 x 25: $1250. See close up below. Feast your eyes on Scott Jacobs’ latest artistic creation: AT JOURNEY’S END which happened to be the “show stopper” at the recent Harley dealer’s convention in San Antonio (beautiful River Walk by the way!) Some of the comments we heard at the show related to how different and appealing this imagery is and not typical of the style we are used to seeing from Scott. One of the dealers hit the nail on the head when she said the painting was “refreshing in its simplicity and very romantic”. Note the Harley-Davidson wine glass with lettering that appears raised in the actual piece and is part of HD’s new barware line. This canvas is available in two sizes and price points shown below. (Scroll down to see latest racing painting) AT JOURNEY’S END (20 x 29 framed net: $417, 39 x 25 framed net: $720 Flat Out is the latest Springer painting and signifies his farewell to flat-track. The painting was done from Springer’s favorite photo (circa 1977) which he used for many years as a postcard for autographs. The giclee on canvas will also be signed by Jay and comes in only one size; 29 x 37 framed net $720. Scott is just finishing up the Andrew Hines painting commemorating his third championship season so those of you with the first two of the series will have your matching number reserved. I will email a visual of the painting when completed. Sorry we missed some of you at the WDM but you can still order these current releases…either email or call me and I’ll be happy to assist you. Bike EXPO Padua– Running into its 14th year, the annual BIKE EXPO at Padua has established itself already as THE season opener not only south-side of the alps: With lots of visitors passing the gates already on Friday. Both saturday and sunday again the show was crowded beyond belief! There were times when you thought that this exhibition could hardly get any bigger – but every year, the BIKE EXPO – formerly established as Chopper & Custom Show – extended it’s grip on hall after hall! The empty room between Halls 7 and 8 was bridged with a roof, thus creating another hall for Honda. As in 2007, all available halls were full to the max with motorcycles and custom bikes. The big Motorcycle Manufacturers are out in force – and so is the italian Custom bike Scene: We will have a full feature on Bikernet in the next couple of weeks. BIKERNET ROAD RACING CORRESPONDENT/COMPETITOR CHECKS IN– I was almost on TV, there was a webcast of our WERA Racing Awards Banquet. should be able to click on “watch my last broadcast”.. then scroll thru till 9:42 something.. she reads Bob Young, then I’m next.. make sure you catch the roar of the crowd boys!!!! Couple hundred people havin fun. It was a great year. National #1 plate, a couple regional #1’s.and other stuff. –Charles Young IT’S SUPER BOWL WHISKEY TIME–It’s raining outside and I’ll pray my dish doesn’t go out. I want to write the president of Dish Network. They spout about how cool their system is, but they don’t mention that it doesn’t work in the rain. That’s bullshit. We called tech the other day and the tech guy admitted, “They work in light sprinkles, but if the wind kicks up or in heavy rain they don’t work, so get use to it.” That might be cool in Califa, but not in most states. Let me know if you’ve had a similar problem, or have a solution? There’s more news coming in from Cincy, new motorcycle GPS systems, new pipes from D&D, new Le Pera seats. American Iron Horse closed its doors and so did White Bros after it was bought by the MAG group. Sucker Punch Sally’s 66 Bobber won the Best Bobber of the year award. Sucker Punch signed several new dealers and they’re rockin’. We will be working closely with SPS and Saxon this year. Miami Ink stars are starting a Motorcycle company and we’ll bring you more on that group effort. It’s a blast to pick up the buzz, that the industry is cooking and we have shit to look forward to in the near future. It’s about game time. Let’s party. Ride forever, –Bandit
